Notes from the couch . . .
"Doubt's Destruction "
MARTINA
Fernando explains to Rogelio that he overheard Olimpia talking to their mother insisting that Rogelio wasn't Hipólito's son. Rogelio is upset that Fernando didn't tell him as soon as he heard and and tells him not a word to their mother that they heard because that would kill her.
Rogelio retreats to his room where Paula finds him like a little kid curled up on the bed hugging a pillow in tears He tells her that he is afraid everything he has known has been a lie. He tells Paula what Fernando told him. Paula doesn't believe it and knowing Martina, it isn't worth even thinking about. Martina would never lie. Rogelio hopes she wouldn't.
Later, Fernando brings up the sore topic of Martina and Gabriel again. Rogelio tells HIM that their mother would be incapable of doing something like that. It would be offensive to ask her about it and it is best to forget it. Martina overhears and asks "forget what?"Rogelio says nothing and then adds Fernando was insisting on talking about the past. Martina says that they think she is stupid. Rogelio says no way and adds with a touch of sarcasm "She's the Monarca of Morelia." She doesn't like Rogelio's tone and wants to know what is going on. Rogelio says they are sick of being in Mexico City.
Rogelio can't help himself and goes to talk to his mother. He finds her looking at photos of him and his brother. He says that Marco and Luis always got along. She adds that Fernando was the strong-headed one. He surprises her by asking how she met his father. She explains that their families knew each other for years. She and Olimpia were friends. Hipólito convinced her father he wanted to marry her before he convinced her. Rogelio thinks that proved how much he was in love with her. Martina is not sure about that but they did have an exemplary marriage until she found out about Ignacio. He dares to ask if she loved her husband. She is taken aback and wonders why he is asking now. He is just curious. She doesn't have to answer. Martina says she never let Hipólito down and never imagined he would have betrayed her like he did. She asks if you can just overlook something like that. He agrees she can't.
Imelda shows up at Rogelio's workplace and tells him about having done a DNA test after Fernando told her what he heard. She has the results for Rogelio. She has not looked at them. She thinks that the doubt must be driving him crazy. He is angry about what she did and tells her he is not interested. She leaves the envelope with him anyway.
Rogelio tells Paula that Imelda did a DNA test. Paula asks why would Rogelio need that. He must know he is Hipólito's son. Paula says his mother doesn't deserve this. She cannot know about this. Rogelio knows BUT why would Olimpia even say it and why did Imelda do a DNA test???
Martina overhears and wants to know what this is all about and what Olimpia said. She accuses Rogelio of not being brave enough to ask her to her face. He is her son and this is how he pays her back? All because of what some damn woman said? How could he doubt his own mother? He tries to apologize but she is not having it. She slaps him hard across the face and says NO!
With Fernando and Imelda present, Martina says she gave her life for her sons. She gave up her own needs. What more do they want from her? To destroy her? Well, they have done it. She told them to be careful around Olimpia but they still fell in her trap. She grabs the DNA results and pushes them in Rogelio's hand. She tells him find out who his father is and leaves. Rogelio hands them to Imelda and asks her if she is satisfied. Imelda looks at the results and there is NO chance that Rogelio is Gabriel's son. Fernando and Rogelio ask Imelda why did she do DNA test anyway. She lies and says that she wanted to shut Olimpia up. Rogelio takes responsibility for it all.
Rogelio tells Paula that his mother had never ever slapped him before. The worst part is that he deserved it. He feels like a piece of garbage for how he treated his mother (and he should!)
Martina ends up going with Gabriel to Morelia to get away from her family. He decides he is going to make a supermarket run. She is going to stay at home.
After he leaves, Martina goes out into the street and seems disoriented. She ends up at Villa Morelia. She yells at Melitón for not having watered the rose bushes. She asks him to give her a hug. She then tells him that she is going up to her room and wants her supper sent up to her. She goes up to her room and sees it in the past and the present. She is confused. She ends up lying on Ignacio's bed holding her handbag to her chest and squeezing her eyes shut.
EVERYTHING ELSE
MARCO sells his hotel on wheels to help support the family. He gives them half and other half to Blanca to keep for themselves. She is so proud of him wanting to take care of his family. He asks Toro if he can rent a small room at the garage for him and Blanca to live in. Toro says yes.
PAULA goes to see OLIMPIA to thank her with a box of chocolates. Of course, Olimpia doesn't eat sugar. Paula also asks if they can keep the dog explaining that he is an emotional support for Lucas since his mother died. Olimpia never answers but is taken with Paula's baby. Paula offers to let her hold Jazz. Olimpia says she doesn't know how to. Paula is willing to show her but Olimpia gets very nervous and refuses. She looks upset when Paula leaves.
JOSE JUAN tells Rogelio that the investors are on board with his project and he wants Rogelio to head up establishing his transportation service in Morelia. Rogelio accepts citing all of the connections he has there.
VIOLETA overhears and tells her uncle that she would be happy to help Rogelio out with opening offices in Morelia. She would even move there if she were needed. Her uncle tells her that he will tell Rogelio and it will be up to him who he hires. Later, Violeta tells a co-worker that Rogelio is just the kind of man she likes. As for him being married, she doesn't think that he is getting along very well with his wife.
CASSANDRA runs into ROGELIO in Morelia. He invites her to supper that he will cook himself. She accepts.
Cassandra calls Olimpia and tells her that things were going well in in Morelia. She asks her why she never told her that Ignacio was an Iturbide. Olimpia tells he that he is her brother's son that he had outside of his marriage. Cassandra admits that she finds him interesting. Olimpia can understand that but warns her that when two tormented souls join each other, something powerful can happen. Cassandra agrees that Olimpia is right, as usual.
FERNANDO is still moaning about not being able to find a job. When Rogelio reminds him he cannot be picky in their current situation, Fernando adds that if he cannot find anything at his "level" in a week, he will take whatever he can get. Rogelio tells him that in the future, there might be something for him in Morelia in JoséJuan's new venture but he will have to be patient.
CECILIA and IGNACIO bring the divorce papers to the courthouse and are finally divorced. They exchange wedding rings. She is teary-eyed the whole time but still doesn't tell him that she is pregnant.
IGNACIO sees his therapist who asks if things really are like he says they are. He goes into a tirade about never doing anything right. He got into fights at school and got hurt. He got home and his mother beat him. He never fought back always ended up feeling guilty for everything he was blamed for. He storms out.
Please add anything I left out.
Very interesting watching Rogelio going down the rabbit hole of doubt and not being able to stop himself. I thought the staging of him curled up on the bed hugging the pillow in tears was one of the best I have seen in a while. For a man over six feet tall, he looked like a little kid.
It was interesting that Paula had absolute confidence in what Martina said; no possibility of a doubt. I felt sorry that Martina suffered a double whammy: the distrust of her flesh and blood/dementia. She didn’t deserve either.
Will Ignacio find Martina?
Will Cecilia EVER tell Ignacio she is pregnant?
Will Olimpia find who she is looking for?
Will Cassandra and Ignacio do the deed?
Will Cassandra ever friend Eva back?
Will Rogelio fall for Violeta’s “charms”?
Will Marco and Blanca ever have a proper home/apartment?
Who else is going to turn up pregnant? Cassandra? Blanca? Felipa?
Will Maraca pee again at Olimpia’s apartment?
Will Auntie Pati still try to get custody of Lucas?
Only 35 episodes to answer these questions and more!
Jarifa, “Doubt’s Destruction” could not have been more fitting!!
“Rogelio going down the rabbit hole of doubt and not being able to stop himself” was the perfect descriptive. Every word of your outstanding narrative was so insightful. What a powerful, heart wrenching episode that you covered with your always masterful style.
Martina’s grief at Ignacio and Rogelio’s betrayal made me feel equally guilty for wondering if Rogelio was Gabriel’s for even a moment. When she wandered back to her house, seeing her room as it was and as it is, then curling up in the fetal position it was unbearably sad. Diana Bracho was so moving, she became the character.
Yes, the fact that Paula immediately dismissed any notion that Rogelio wasn’t his father’s son shows what a good, trusting, faithful person she is.
While Marco and Blanca always light up the screen, my favorite (and only light) moment of the night was Fidel’s little Penguin walk toward his baby.
Ignacio has done some terrible things. But last night, he elicited my pity. His quiet heartbreak when he met with Ceci; seeing the horrible wounds on his back inflicted by his mother; such a tortured soul. That said, I felt terrible for Ceci who is also suffering, who gave everything and more to an impossible marriage. I so wish she had told him about the baby. When he finds out he will feel betrayed once again.
“Olimpia can understand that but warns her that when two tormented souls join each other, something powerful can happen”. While the idea of Cassandra and Ignacio seems intriguing, perhaps it is another toxic mix…
Who’s afraid of a little tiny baby? Olimpia. There certainly seems to be a back story there.
Is it all significant Jose Juan knows Imelda? Violeta is just a last-minute annoyance.
Imelda and Fernando deserve each other.
Diana
Thanks, Diana. Yes, Fidel was so cute with his penguin walk. We needed a touch of humor last night. Rogelio better pray that his mother is able to return to her right mind long enough so that they can reconcile after his mistrust. ITA about Diana Bracho’s performance. You cannot get any better than that. I still pity Ignacio. He longs to be “normal” but can’t feel it. Maybe Cassandra will be the answer.
Recaps for #17 and #18 will be up tomorrow and the day after tomorrow respectively. Thank you for your patience.
Once again, Jarifa, thanks so much for your notes! They tell all!
Once again, Imelda brings chaos, but doesn’t take responsibility. She pretends to have gotten the DNA test to shut Olympia up. She got it because she was gleefully anticipating being the new monarca. With Fernando in the #2 spot again I wonder about José Juan. Will Imelda head for greener pastures?
Olimpia was really strange with the baby. I first had the impression they kind of disgusted her but last night she seemed taken with Jazz.
Ignacio and Cecilia still seem to love each other. If Cassandra is also tormented they’ll be no steady person in their relationship.
Rogelio is a saint, telling Fernando about the job in Morelia. I would want to be very far from that couple. Imelda is toxic.
Violeta plans to after Rogelio, and doesn’t mind that he’s married. She’ll try to break up his marriage. Paula is very trusting but I think she’ll wise up to Violeta quickly. She already had questioned Rogelio when she came to their table.
I somehow missed that whole scene with Ignacio and the therapist.
I hate that Martina seems to be getting dementia. Maybe it’s the stress of everything that’s happening. I hope so, or some fixable medical thing.
Liz
Jarifa, thank you for an excellent review from your couch. You didn't miss a moment of the ongoing angst and pain.
This was an angst filled episode with the sad meeting between Igy and Ceci and Martina confused and hurt returning to her home. She seemed so small and defeated curled up in Igy's bed in the fetal position.
Hmmmm... That was an interesting scene between Olympia and Paula , who seems to be the one person in Martina's family whom Olympia is warmer to . Her fear of the baby was telling. Did O have a baby girl and gave her up for adoption? Is that the person she is searching for?
Diana, yes, is there a reason the writers showed us that Imelda knows JJ ?
Can we hope that no matter what Shy Violet does that Rog will just say ," Go away , little girl?" I hope they don't show us that annoying galan flaw of just standing there and letting the floozy smarm all over and kiss them. Galans should just say no and use those strong arms to push back and then walk away. Come on, Rog. Resist !!!
Episode 38: Part 1 of 2
Esteban and Nani arrived at La Esperanza. Maria Teresa hugged both of them. He noticed Maria Teresa's bandaged hands and commented on the hard work.
Remedios went to Santos to bring food. She detected jealousy over recent encounters with Marco. He told her he always had bad vibes about Marco. He also told her that he was trying to fight his jealousy; she told him to be wary of Marco.
Genoveva came out to greet Esteban and Nani. She had their rooms ready and Esteban's favorite breakfast was in progress.
Bernarda was on her way to take care of ranch business and told her daughters to feed the livestock. She left to work while Valentina tried to get Regina out of the dumps.
Santos and Remedios talked about Valentina's paternity issue and Maria Teresa's challenges. Remedios told him not to break Valentina's heart.
Bernarda and Esteban greeted each other. He told her he had come to help Maria Teresa and could be staying for a long while. She went out to work. He tried calling her back but she was out of earshot.
Maria Teresa found Santos and told him her father had come. They went back to the hacienda together.
Nani went down to the breakfast room and talked to Genoveva, saying she was not a guest but there to help.
Marco asked Adriana about her history with Grim and she denied there was any. She became more nervous with each subsequent question and finally declined to join him and Maria Teresa at dinner.
Santos began showing Esteban around.
Regina stood outside the henhouse, wanting to be alone. Bernarda asked about cleaning the barn, which had gone undone. She then talked about Esteban's arrival to help which provoked sarcasm from Valentina about Maria Teresa, which her mother said was none of their business.
Santos praised Maria Teresa's work and attitude to Esteban, who observed then carefully.
Clemente confided in Trejo about his romantic problems and issues with his parents. He wanted to move out but could not afford to. Trejo told him he should be making money from his artwork, even saying he knew someone who could help. [Wow.]
The inspector came to see Rut who was not happy with the report.
Esteban was happy at breakfast with Maria Teresa saying they would do their best. He and Nani had brought stuff from Maria Teresa's apartment to help modernize the ranch and he gave her a checque.
Adriana and Irasema were scouting the crowds and spotted no prospects for a horrible fate. They split up to cover more ground.
The inspector was still waiting when Santos came in. She had a favorable report about the ranch and Santos' management and she said they could get back to work.
Genoveva told Cris that Esteban was there and all was well. She scolded him for not washing his hands.
Marco went to La Esperanza. Maria Teresa backed out of the dinner date because of work and her father's arrival. She handed him the checque to pay half of her debt to him. He tried to decline it so she could pay other debts. However he pocketed it and said he would not cash it until she was sure she would not need the money for anything else. [This is a big red flag in front of a huge charging bull.]
Episode 38: Part 2 of 2
Marco was with the Jackal and they spoke of a water shortage problem. Maria Teresa offered to help.
Norma talked to Bernarda who knew nothing about Regina's and Clemente's relationship. Norma wanted to understand what happened. Bernarda was not interested in discussing this at all. She demanded that Norma leave and never come back.
Marco said to Maria Teresa that Esteban was welcome anytime. The Jackal came in with the BS about the water shortage. Marco made a show of declining Maria Teresa's help and then raised the subject of Santos. Maria Teresa said she would take care of this.
Regina tore up the note she had for Clemente and cried.
Maria Teresa told Marco she would see that her peeps helped. Marco thanked her. The Jackal held his laughter until she had left and then applauded his boss.
Valentina found Regina in their room. She was angry with Valentina for having broken her relationship with Clemente. Valentina tried defending her actions.
Bernarda asked Santos and Cris if they saw the girls. She was angry with both of them for not having told her about this.
Valentina apologized to Regina who kept crying, saying she could never be happy. Valentina then cried with her.
Esteban looked at a photo of Lucia and Maria Teresa when Maria Teresa returned telling him she had just paid Marco half of what she owed him. He talked about how proud her mother was of her looking down from heaven.
Marco and the Jackal talked about bringing cattle to the river, which was the false pretext for access, as they laughed.
Maria Teresa told Santos about access to the river for Marcos and his cattle which were becoming dehydrated. [Did she see that for herself?] Santos protested, but she was not persuaded.
Irasema was recruiting but it is evident [to us] that she found this distasteful.
Santos tried once again to convince Maria Teresa that Marco was involved in illegal businesses. Alas, to no avail.
Excellent, Jarifa.
"Martina would never lie." Really, Paula? What about her faking a stroke or something at the beginning of this tale or her later trying to collude with Erika to take Rogelio from you?
I don't fault Rogelio for wondering if he might be Gabriel's. Nobody's perfect, and Martina certainly is not. It's not like Rogelio did the DNA test, he was just mulling things over quietly with his wife -- until Imelda, Fernando, and even Martina goaded him into saying something rash.
Liz, "Rogelio is a saint, telling Fernando about the job in Morelia. I would want to be very far from that couple. Imelda is toxic." ( I would add that Fernando is arrogant and spoiled.) I cannot understand why Rogelio would try to get lazy boy Fernando a job some where down the line. Fernando might think that now he doesn't have to look for a job anymore anywhere. Then adding "toxic" Imelda to the mix! Rogelio is asking for repeated nightmares. At least there are three self-sufficient brothers out of four.
Susan, "I hope they don't show us that annoying galan flaw of just standing there and letting the floozy smarm all over and kiss them. Galans should just say no and use those strong arms to push back and then walk away. Come on, Rog. Resist !!!" Susan, you just cited of my, if not my most hated tropes in telenovelas. I sure hope they do not go in that direction!
Niecie, ""Martina would never lie." Really, Paula? What about her faking a stroke or something at the beginning of this tale or her later trying to collude with Erika to take Rogelio from you?" You reminded us. Thanks. So much has happened it is hard to remember what happened way back at the beginning. It leaves me wondering if Martina has really changed at all.
Great stuff, Jarifa.
Olympia's mission to destroy Martina makes less and less sense all the time. She is a psychopath. She gets off on the pain of others.
As for Violetta, if she pulls that slut move she'll make sure it's all over social media.
Cecelia is doing the right thing by staying away from Ignacio. He is wound much too tight and is much too unpredictable. Cassandra needs to watch out.
In view of Imelda's past behavior her giving the unopened envelope to Rogelio also made no sense unless she knew the results.
As for Rogelio being willing to get Fernando a job, that would be foolish. BTDT and lost my job over it. Fortunately it was before I entered my professional field. Fernando should not work in the same company let alone the same office.
Urban, an all-encompassing recap; you explained everything so clearly and completely including a few things that went right over my head. Fabulous job.
I have no doubt now there is some sort of history between Esteban and Bernarda. It wasn’t so much the words themselves, but the facial expressions and body language that gave them away. “He tried calling her back but she was out of earshot”. He definitely wanted to say more and was very frustrated he let that opportunity slide through his hands.
“Santos praised Maria Teresa's work and attitude to Esteban, who observed them carefully”. After allowing Aldo to steal them blind, he turns around and gives Marco his approval and blessing although, like his daughter, he knows little about him. Marco not cashing the check was indeed “…a big red flag in front of a huge charging bull.” And now the water?? He is moving at lightning speed. Are father and daughter going to get duped again? Sadly, they are seemingly on their way.
I was floored Trejo wants to help Clemente; he must know he won’t be able to hide this good deed from Rut but does he think he can outsmart him? I wouldn’t bet against him; sometimes street smart is the most effective.
“Adriana and Irasema were scouting the crowds and spotted no prospects for a horrible fate”. This also surprised me. I thought sure Adriana was going to “eliminate” Grim and then go to big bad Rut to ensure she has “protection”.
“Marco said to Maria Teresa that Esteban was welcome anytime”; is he already taking ownership?? Well of course he is; IT IS her house!? (I manage to get out sarcastically)
Santos needs to find something/anything to implicate Marco before he steals everything from Maria Teresa. Next, Marco will be pressing her to marry him and Maria Teresa, head in the clouds, sadly oblivious, may well say yes!
Diana
"With Fernando in the #2 spot again I wonder about José Juan. Will Imelda head for greener pastures?" Very interesting Liz. I had noted the fact they are acquainted as well. Usually this means something...As you noted Jarifa, "toxic" Imelda" is exactly right!
Susan, Olimpia seemed to be drawn to the baby but couldn't bear to let herself go near her. You might be onto something regarding her possibly giving her child up for adoption. Olimpia is a strange creature; I see no kindness or softness except perhaps a thumbnail for Paula.
"I don't fault Rogelio for wondering if he might be Gabriel's. Nobody's perfect, and Martina certainly is not. It's not like Rogelio did the DNA test, he was just mulling things over quietly with his wife -- until Imelda, Fernando, and even Martina goaded him into saying something rash". Niecie, you are always such a wise voice of reason...you are so right. Thank you...
Urban, I agree Ceci needs to stay away from Ignacio. I do think they cared for each other and that Ignacio did love her, as much as he is capable of loving anyone. I think he is going to be livid when he finds out Ceci is still pregnant.
Diana
Companies sometimes give a good employee a bonus for recommending a new hire. Maybe Rog thought he'd get a bonus ....even though he knows Fernando . Perhaps Rog thinks Fernando 's time in prison woke him up . It didn't . Maybe Rog is just an eternal optimist .Sometimes the eldest child in a family never gets over trying to care for and protect his\her younger siblings no matter how old they are.
Rogelio's reaction was completely understandable. Questioning the authenticity of your own life is a natural thing to do under the circumstances; you will wonder what other lies you've been told since birth.
Fernando's low comment about their sibling status made me see red. Rogelio should have kicked him out of the family after the betrayal and what did he do instead? Kept him from killing Ignacio which could have put him in the slammer for the rest of his life.
I hope Paula sees through Imelda's role in all this.
Urban, "Cassandra needs to watch out." with Ignacio. Too bad that Olimpia didn't give her a heads up because she easily could have. I still want to know how Cassandra is related to Olimpia. It has been a long time since it was mentioned, I doubt we will ever find out.
Thanks, Urban, that was excellent.
One has to wonder why MT and her dad can’t seem to judge someone’s character. And Santos has been working the ranch and knows the neighbors. Why won’t MT listen to him.
Norma coming to the ranch on behalf of her son was too much. I learned a long time ago to stay out of your kid’s problems with friends. They need to work it out. And they’re certainly old enough to work it out. Guess Norma is a helicopter parent!
I was sure Adriana and friend would run into Victoria and Regina. So glad they haven’t but I really think it will happen.
Liz
Highlights from the cozy Friday night couch . . .
MARTINA
Melitón tries to tell Felipa that Martina is upstairs in Ignacio's room. It is either Martina or there is a ghost in the house. Felipa calls Micaela who tells her that Martina is missing. Paula will call Rogelio.
Ignacio comes in and wonders who the supper was prepared for. All Felipa and Melitón can do is cackle like Heckle and Jeckle. Felipa finally tells Ignacio that Martina is in his room. Ignacio goes into his room and gently tries to awaken her. She wakes up screaming for him not to touch her and then faints. Ignacio wants the doctor and Rogelio called. He stays with Martina.
Ignacio calls Olimpia who finds it odd that he is calling her after their last conversation. He tells her that Martina is asleep on his bed. He is guessing that somebody must have gotten her very upset. Olimpia actually looks sad.
Marco arrives and acts like a jack*** attacking Ignacio asking what he did to his mother. The doctor and Melitón have to hold him back. Ignacio threatens to throw him out of his home.
After the doctor attends a a now conscious Martina, he tells Marco that his mother's condition was likely caused by some very intense emotional experience. (Rogelio, I am looking at YOU) Marco says the try to avoid things leek that. (Really? after he attacks Ignacio??) Martina wants to leave. The doctor tells her to stay and rest a bit in order to get her blood pressure stabilized. The fact that it was high could have made her faint.
The doctor explains to Rogelio that Martina has suffered a kind of emotional block. He knows that she has been through a lot lately. ( If he only knew about her stupid sons and daughter-in-law . . . ) She needs rest. After the doctor leaves, Rogelio still wants Martina to go to the hospital even though the doctor says it isn't necessary. (Feeling guilty?) Martina refuses. There is nothing wrong with her but she feels that she cannot trust anyone. She feels empty like she is dead inside. She is still puzzled how she got there and what is going to happen from here on. She has a lot to think about. Rogelio tells her that he is there for her. She can always trust him. She made him the man he is. They will solve her situation together. She doesn't look convinced and insists she will have to overcome this on her own. She ahs to find herself again. He asks for a hug. They hug. She chooses to spend the night at a hotel in Morelia. The next day she returns to Mexico City but goes to stay at Gabriel's apartment. She refuses to live in Olimpia's apartment.
Paula tells Eva that she has noticed that as of late, Martina has been strange, distracted, and confused. Eva blames it all on stress and has to admit that Martina is a real warrior.
SEVERAL WEEKS LATER
-CECILIA is still depressed, not teaching and hasn't told Rogelio that she is pregnant.
PAULA notices on her calendar that today is Martina's birthday but nobody has planned anything. She talks to Gabriel and they arrange a surprise supper at his apartment.
GABRIEL has a surprise for MARTINA. He has a beautiful lamp. She recognizes it as belonging to her grandmother. He must have rescued it for her. Instead of smiling, she looks on sadly thinking that her children forgot about her birthday. Gabriel reminds her that the day isn't over yet.
Gabriel takes Martina out for the day as the family decorates Gabriel's apartment for Martina's birthday and Micaela comes over to do the cooking.
ULISES tells Pati that he is starting a relationship with Ali. He tells Ceci and Paula that he is ready to keep the music school going in Morelia but he is also talking about maybe going back to Sayulita to a friend. It seems that coming to Morelia was all about Paula and that ship has sailed. What to do? He sings a sad song with his friend. Lucas hears about Ulises maybe leaving from a girl friend who overheard Ulises talking to a friend at the school. .
ROGELIO has LUCAS at work with him. He gets antsy and VIOLETA offers to take him for an ice cream. While they are out, she finds out about Rogelio's family and lets Lucas know he could be moving back to Morelia.
In the mean time, JOSE JUAN is sure that the Morelia expansion is going to be a success but asks Rogelio for a favor when dealing with his niece. She had a rough upbringing. Her father deserted her when she was little and he has been like a father to her ever since. He knows that Rogelio will be in charge in Morelia but his niece is interested in working there. All he is asking is if his niece, who they agree is "very" talented, doesn't fit a position, that Rogelio be tactful with her so she isn't hurt. Rogelio agrees. (I wonder if Rogelio realizes the his arm is being peremptorily twisted)
TORO loans his car to MARCO so he can attend his mother's birthday celebration without having to take the bus. (I like Toro)
As they wait for the birthday celebration to start, LUCAS starts talking about VIOLETA and Morelia. PAULA is p*ssed and lets Rogelio know it. He tries to ignore her "look."
OLIMPIA is in a good mood and gives CASSANDRA time off to go on a date with a supposedly attractive man. Little does Olimpia know that Cassandra has packed a bag and is planning on flying to Morelia to surprise Ignacio--which she does. She is there for that supper invitation he extended. She found out his address because, like him, she always gets what she wants. They end up having sex.
GABRIEL and MARTINA finally come back to his apartment. Before they go in, he tells her that he would do anything for her. He has waited his whole life for her. She smiles. He shows her an engagement ring and proposes.
Correction from the other day: Cecilia and Ignacio agreed to keep their rings and not return them to each other.
Please feel free to add anything I left out.
Jarifa, your wise words painted this storyline canvas in vivid, living color. I am grateful and appreciative of your insight and wry humor.
“All Felipa and Melitón can do is cackle like Heckle and Jeckle” was exactly right; all I could do was smile despite the seriousness of the situation.
Martina’s doctor’s diagnosis was weak and incomplete, far exceeding a “…a kind of emotional block”. While she is obviously stressed by “her stupid sons and daughter-in-law”, there are a myriad of other mental and physical issues at play. I give Martina credit for stating she has much to figure out and will do so on her own. However, she does need medical attention as her issues extend beyond mental turmoil.
I find it hard to believe no one thought to plan Martina’s birthday celebration. It was so obvious the party was a nuisance to both Fernando and Imelda
Ignacio is moving on quickly. Far too quickly. He isn’t over Cecilia who “..is still depressed, not teaching and hasn't told Rogelio that she is pregnant”. She looks devastated and in so much pain. I was trying to figure out if the pillows in her apartment were monkeys in space suits. So strange…
I’m glad Uli turned Pati down. I think Uli would like to fall for Ale but he is still hung up on Paula. He’s clearly unhappy and I think he should leave; start fresh somewhere else where Paula won’t be intertwined in his life.
Was the upshot of Fidel’s brief scene that he didn’t like whatever Eva had fixed him to eat?
Jose Juan and his tiny manbun are going to ensure Rogelio ends up working with obsessed Violeta who is pure poison and sure to be another thorn in his marriage.
Another beautiful Imelda blouse, this grayish blue lace.
Diana
I was surprised by Martina's reaction. I hate the whole 'I sacrificed so much for you therefore you must not doubt me' speech because it just seems manipulative on her part. But then again, she pretended to have a stroke so it's no surprise she keeps on doing the same thing. Martina wants complete trust from her kids but she herslef doesn't fully trust anyone. She refuses to talk about Olimpia and just wants them to do as she says because'I know best', which I find absurd. She didn't expect her husband to be unfaithful butwants her children to think she is perfect. Paula trusting her just makes her seem naive and I personally don't find it charming at all. I generally find complete trust to be a sure way to get disappointed. I find it hard to sympathise with Martina to be honest. Maybe it is true that people who themselves are far from perfect demand others not judge them and doubt them. Martina herself is very judgemental and so now she gets a taste of her own medicine when her son doubts her. Did she ever apologise to him for threatening Erica? Or is this another thing she 'did for his own good therefore she is right?' So the whole 'she has suffered a huge shock' diagnosis just makes me shrug. Martina herself forgot Fernando's birthday at one point so she better not act too offended. Then she had a go at Imelda for not remembering because apparently it's better instead of admiting you yourself messed-up.
Jarifa, thank you so much for this detailed report from Friday's couch watch.
Perhaps these telenovelas are so captivating and addictive because they are studies in the human condition and we look for ourselves or people in our orbits or situations we can relate to.
Despite the flaws of these characters , I still love to see their interactions ...family , friends, co-workers . Just as in real life , people disappoint each other but then at other points they care for and support each other .
As Paula led the family to plan this surprise party for Martina , I thought of
Martina's surprise party last year that Erica planned and made sure Paula didn't attend. Paula lost her mother at an early age , so I can understand her wanting a relationship with Martina, her mother in law . I think Paula loves being a part if this big family despite the flaws and shortcomings of these folks .
I find it hard to take Eva, but I love Fidel. He seems to find the positive in every situation and is so grateful for his wife, baby, and friends. Fidel is definitely theya glass half full person.
Lots of angst and despair going on ...Ceci seems to be hibernating with her baby and her pain. Uli is still carrying the torch for Paula and singing his pain . Felipa and Mel are laughing hysterically through the pain . Igy is trying to forget his pain with another woman . Life is hard. Most people are just trying to find some happiness .
Martina and Olymoia are quite a study in contrasts . Olympia is a successful businesswoman obsessed with revenge , and Martina is surrounded by family and loyal servants . They chose very different life paths.
Jarifa,I like Toro , too. He has certainly been good to Marco .
Violetta is determined . Paula was not happy getting the news that Shy Vi would be going to Morelia. Maybe Paula, should have a little talk with Vi. Some women just don't care that a man is married. Pathetic. What is up with that?
Martina is lucky to have reunited with her teen love Gabriel , who evidently never stopped loving her and now is always supportive and caring. A true love story of devotion . Life is short. Dance like nobody's watching .
Diana, I noticed Martina's beautiful lace blouse, but I missed the monkey pillows since I was concentrating on Ceci's sad face .
Emi and Leo are finally not novios in hiding; Gael is finally free and Mau can finally do math - Part 1/2
Mau tells Emi he loves her, in front of Jenny and Leo. Emi says she doesn't love him back and Jenny starts screaming that Emi is going after Mau. I think this sealed the deal; Jenny wins the stupidity contest. Mau is mean to Joaquina, Leo pulls her back and goes to leave with Emi, Mau attacks Leo; what a mess!
Joaquina interrupts Roberta's conversation with Fidel and Adalberto to tell her what's going on.
Roberta calms the situation down. She takes Emi's side, which enrages Jennifer. She insists it's Emi fault, even after this happened. She certainly has very few brain cells.
Roberta calls some Domínguez dude and tells him about Gael. Adalberto hears this and congratulates her.
Jenny is whining to her sister about Emi, for the 385th time. Sara shows her a picture she took of Emi and Leo kissing; she sent this to Tigre (so she randomly has his phone number?), to enrage him I guess.
She certainly gets what she wanted; he whines to Zaira about Emi betraying them with Leo in the freaking police station with Marijó right there. Zaira scolds him for talking like this in front of Marijó.
Emi and Leo have a "we can't be together we have so many people opposing us" classic novela talk. She gets a message from Zaira (because Tigre refuses to talk to her) about the situation with Gael.
Orlando tries to get Mau to understand he's making a fool of himself and Jenny. You're wasting your time, my boy. You can't fix stupid. He gets a call from the police department and leaves.
When he gets there, he (Orlando) explains to Tigre, Zaira and Marijó that Gael's case is complicated and Marijó's statement isn't enough; they need a lawyer. A lawyer (who is actually the Domínguez guy) for Gael walks in at that moment. I guess this only works in telenovelaland, because I asked for more money and less sponsors in telenovelas and neither happened.
Mau is talking to himself and whining that Leo takes what he loves the most. He searches for some pictures of when they were young. He screams at young Leo at first, but then looks at his younger self and holy guacamole, his young self and Nico are identical. He tries to calculate, AGAIN, Nico's age. Gee, you don't need to have passed Algebra II to remove 6 years + 9 months from today, my dude. I guess he finally does the subtraction, because he looks like he just figured it out. It only took him 6 days. No sticker for you, Mau!
Emi and Leo are finally not novios in hiding; Gael is finally free and Mau can finally do math - Part 2/2
The lawyer starts asking Ezequiel questions he can't answer; he calls La Patrona, who's busy kissing with Fidel. She tells Ezequiel not to worry; she sent the lawyer and he should do as she says.
Leo and Nico are playing video games. Nico tells Leo his mom (Emilia) says he can't be his dad because he has a girlfriend and adds his mom is better LOL. Emilia and Doña Liz are there and hear this xD Leo tells him he broke up with that girlfriend and he'll try to win his mom over. Nico is very happy about this.
When they go out, Emi scolds Leo for saying this stuff and in front of Doña Liz. I guess he put the win over mode on, because their argument ends in kisses. Nico sees them and says "finally" LOL!
Emi and Leo go to the police station. Ezequiel brings two cops with him and asks them if Gael really hit them.
Flashback: Ezequiel paying these dudes to say Gael didN'T hit them and they lied. One of the cops says they'll go to jail for this, so Ezequiel blackmails them with helping him finish this Salvador guy off. He asks them what do they prefer: a few months in prison for lying or many years for killing?
Back to the present: the cops say that Gael didn't hit them. Gael is freed. Hugs all around. The lawyer tells them he has already been paid, they start to wonder who paid him when Roberta walks in and says SHE did! She plays nice again, says she wants to apologize for the things she did yada yada. Leo looks like he buys it; Emi, on the other hand, does not.
Now Tigre and Emi are alone. He still doesn't want to talk to Emi because he thinks she betrayed them by being with Leo. Emi asks him if he's the right person to talk about loyalty when he was in Zaira's house when her mom was dying!
Tigre says he and Zaira weren't lovers when her mom was dying. He just needed to go somewhere and cry and Zaira was his friend. Emi says she misses her mom.
I assume it's the next day or later in the same. Mau is STILL DRINKING when Nico comes to cheer him up. He gives him his juice bottle. Uh oh. His DNA is on the straw. I guess Mau at least passed Biology, because he has the same thought.
He goes to a clinic to take a paternity test using Nico's saliva from the straw. Yikes. Afterwards, he goes home. He almost gets into another fight with Leo in front of Marijó and Joaquina. After these two leave, he tells Leo that Emilia was once his; they used to be novios. Leo doesn't seem to believe him at first, but looks like he's having second thoughts after Mau insists.
And with Leo's confused look, we have the Fin del Capítulo.
Weirdo, your wry humor shone throughout, especially the title “….Mau can finally do math”. HA! Your wise insights explained much that I missed – this was great.
Watching Mau spend the entire night mewling, crying, drunk, immersed in self-pity was exhausting.
“Orlando tries to get Mau to understand he's making a fool of himself and Jenny. You're wasting your time, my boy. You can't fix stupid” was exactly right! Thick as a brick, delusional and simply insane.
I didn’t like Tigre and Emi’s disagreement. Small fissures turn into bigger breaks. “He still doesn't want to talk to Emi because he thinks she betrayed them by being with Leo”. Get a grip! That said, I’m glad Tigre cleared up any thought that he and Zaira were only friends when Emi’s mother was dying. It makes perfect sense as Zaira seems like a good woman, I hope Emi took heed.
Roberta is an expert juggler, keeping all of her evil balls in the air simultaneously. She is consistently putting out fires, especially for Mau. If only she didn’t use gasoline…
“Mau is STILL DRINKING when Nico comes to cheer him up. He gives him his juice bottle. Uh oh. His DNA is on the straw. I guess Mau at least passed Biology, because he has the same thought”. Now, I am on the edge of my seat.
Thank you so much, I can’t wait to read your recap tomorrow!
Diana
Weirdo, thank you for a wonderful ride .
Wow, talk about a morbid drunk . Mau is soggy with booze and tears . When he was looking at the photos, I wondered how he got pictures of Nico. I didn't realize they were photos of Mau. That scene of Nico wandering over to Mau as he was sitting on the ground with his bottle of booze feeling sorry for himself ...yikes . Where were those schoolteachers ? He was right next to the playground . As Nick offered his juice box instead of the bottle of booze , I thought Mau was staring at it trying to figure out what it was. I didn't realize that he had enough biology to think of a DNA test . My oh my , how telenovelas have used DNA tests , cellphones, tablets in recent years . Better living through chemistry. Beam me up, Scotty.
Amid all the chaos, Leo remains out strong, calm galan. Thank you .
Were Mau and Emi dating when he raped her? Does he remember the rape, or does his alcohol soaked brain remember it as consensual? Did Leo believe Mau's claim that he and Emi had been novios?
Jenny believing Emi is to blame for Mau being obsessed with her is absurd. How can Orlando like let alone love nutty Jenny . Sara at least had an actual relationship with Leo , so it makes sense that she is jealous and angry at Emi " stealing " Leo away from her .
I don't understand Tigre being mad at Emi for her relationship with Leo . I thought he liked Leo. QTH?
I couldn't stand Tigre in this episode. And since when Sara is an expert in 'the psychology of working classes'? But then again, loyalty didn't matter much to tigre when he threw Emilia out of the house for getting pregnant.
Leo is testing my patience too. He didn't care his mummy dearest put Gael in prison. Apparently what matters is that she set him free. And that she put him there in the first place...well, it could happen to anyone! You know, sending innocent people to jail, who doesn't do that?
I wonder how she raised Leo and Mauricio to make them the way they are. Leo told Mauricio she clearly prefers him and Mauricio was like 'what use is that to me?' But if Leo is supposed to be her favourite, she clearly knows he isn't stupid if she wants him away. She can talk all daylong about him being weak, but she certainly doesn't want him around.
What is it really that Mauricio wants? He thinks it's necessary to marry Jenifer and sort of agreed only when Roberta told him she has Mari's money. So does he want the company? But he spends so much time drinkiing. What is he going to do with it even if he gets the mine? I'm still not clear on how much he knows about what's going on there.
Did those guys kill off Salvador? I somehow missed this crucial detail.
Roberta said she needs Emilia and her papa because they know how to get the gold out of that mine. But are they the only experts? And it's not like within a month of digging there will be no gold left. So is she going to wait for years till she's extracted all the gold and then get rid of them? For someone like her a concept of 'enough wealth' doesn't exist most probably so what exactly is she planning?
I cannot watch Jenifer. Why marry a man who doesn't want to marry her? It's just silly, even for a telenovela.
"I couldn't stand Tigre in this episode. And since when Sara is an expert in 'the psychology of working classes'? But then again, loyalty didn't matter much to tigre when he threw Emilia out of the house for getting pregnant".
Early on, it would have seemed impossible to believe Tigre would have done that waterlily! But we are seeing another side to him, a rather cold, unforgiving one. Very disturbing.
"Were Mau and Emi dating when he raped her? Does he remember the rape, or does his alcohol soaked brain remember it as consensual? Did Leo believe Mau's claim that he and Emi had been novios?" are excellent questions Susan. I keep hoping he wasn't the rapist but everything seems to be pointing in that direction.
Diana
Gracias, Jarifa.
Perhaps these telenovelas are so captivating and addictive because they are studies in the human condition and we look for ourselves or people in our orbits or situations we can relate to.
I completely agree with this statement. I think TelevisaUnivision deliberately does these human stories in acknowledgement of the fact that people are not very different regardless of ethnicity or culture so that we can all relate to the characters in their stories. I have yet to watch Turkish dizis but I hope to discover this in them.
Martina needs to be seen by experts on Alzheimer's Disease. I think they're leading up to this as Diana Bracho is 78 and it looks like all actors above 75 seem to have to do such stories these days.
I also think that this could be Martina's Karmageddon for all her past sins against her sons and Rogelio's ladies.
BTW, I first saw DB in the prologue of 1998's El Privilegio de Amar where she played the younger version of the religious fanatic mother of Cesar Evora. I predicted then that she would end up playing toxic mothers later and she's done her share of those.
Okayyyyyy....
Violetta likes to cause trouble. Here is hoping JJ can knock some sense into her because her "rough childhood" is no excuse. This could cause Rogelio more problems than just Paula's jealousy; if JJ's clients see anything amiss it could hurt his business.
Cecelia needs to get out of town because Ignacio will never leave her alone. Her current depression is only making her situation worse.
Maybe more later. I still have to catch up to the other two; I wasn't feeling well last night.
Urban, yes, people are so much more alike than different . I liked Turkish dizis I watched , especially " Fatamagul." Some can be fatalistic and angstfilled with lots of emotion and hearts on sleeves. . I love the scenery of Turkey and the peeks inside Turkish homes and family life.
Thank you Jarifa for the fantastic recaps of both Thursday and Friday, I watched both episodes this morning and as always I appreciate your summaries to tell me what I missed, or just didn't pay attention to.
My heart breaks for Ignacio! I don't remember the last time I saw such a tormented character portrayed so sympathetically... we know he's not okay and dangerous but he has such a vulnerable side. When he told Cece that he thinks his son paid for his mistakes (ie. the abortion) I wanted to cry. And then when he finds out Martina is in his room, he immediately knows something must be wrong and is kind and compassionate - not that he was thanked for any of it. I think it's sadder that we saw for a minute what a united happy family that accepted Ignacio could have looked like - it was too late, but for a moment you saw that glimpse and it makes the loneliness seem darker. I don't think Cassandra is the solution...
I agree with what others have said, just a simple emotional upset isn't the right diagnosis. Something is wrong with Martina and she needs medical help.
I am two episodes behind on Tierra too. I had good intentions of catching up this afternoon but I had a headache and took a nap instead. I will catch up by Monday! Thank you Urban for the recap!
Great comments. Gives me a lot to think about. I think that I am enjoying this one as much as I am because the characters are very complex like real people. Nobody is 100% good or bad.
I found Rogelio's interrogation of his own mother in the previous episode, no matter what his reasoning was, what he thought was his "right "to know, or what kind of imperfect person she had been, to have been particularly disrespectful and cruel. It was grotesque. He was questioning her honor. That is a no-go. He was stupid enough to take the bait. Better that he would have lived not knowing than put his mother through what he did. I can see why she is staying with Gabriel. I wonder if what Rogelio broke can ever be fully repaired. If she is headed to dementia, it might never be possible.
I agree with everyone that Martina deserved better medical treatment than that given her by her family doctor. The way this has been set up, it seems that she was not just overwrought.
As for ignacio, ITA with, you, Darcy. "My heart breaks for Ignacio! I don't remember the last time I saw such a tormented character portrayed so sympathetically... we know he's not okay and dangerous but he has such a vulnerable side."
As for Cecilia, she has been in her depressive state long enough. She needs to at least start teaching or doing something. Her current path is not a healthy one for her or her baby.
I feel sorry for Paula who can already see that Violeta is going to be a real PITA and also for Rogelio whose job has somehow been tied to make Violeta succeed because her uncle sees her as being so "talented". (at work? maybe it will turn out to be "something else")
On a lighter note:
Thank goodness for Felipa and Melitón and Eva and Fidel. They do give me a good comedic lift when I need it most.
Thank you, Diana, for pointing out the beautiful costuming they have given to Martina. Her latest blouse looked beautiful with her monarch pin.
I forgot to mention yesterday that Marco was particularly sensitive that his family not find out that he sold his hotel on wheels and what his current living situation was with Blanca.
I cannot wait until Monday!
Episode 39: Part 1 of 3
Marco told Rut he got access to the river on La Esperanza's land Moving a few things at first with more access later. Rut commented on “I hope you know what you're doing.” Marco was his usual (over)confident self. Rut showed Marco the inspector's report and told him he didn't like surprises; he intended to be in control. Marco told him not to worry.
Maria Teresa and Esteban went out to where Bernarda was so he could also meet Capuccino. He was happy that Maria Teresa loved her animals and that Bernarda was such an excellent veterinarian. Maria Teresa then praised Valentina and Regina whose existence Esteban was just finding out about. Bernarda was a little uneasy at this and more so when Maria Teresa said that there were not little niñas. Esteban said nothing but looked shocked.
Valentina and Regina were walking through the fields. Regina was no longer angry with her sister, only confused. They hugged.
Norma and Clemente talked about Bernarda. Norma did not like being caught by surprise that Bernarda knew nothing. This looked bad to her and she did not like that Bernarda had so little regard for her son,
Bernarda caught up with the girls. Valentina was not eager to talk. Bernarda chewed them out for not telling her about Clemente. This provoked Regina to demand to know if Rut was her father.
Clemente told Norma that Bernarda was over-protective of her daughters. Regina had feared her reaction. Norma did not understand Bernarda and told him that Valentina and Regina had so many problems that he was better off not being near them, especially with a mother like Bernarda.
Valentina pointed out to Bernarda that they could not understand her attitude without facts. B did not reply to this, repeating her demand to cut Clemente out of her life. Regina asked whether Rut was her father and Bernarda finally said he was not. That did not change her mind about what she had demanded of her.
Santos and Cris were back to their favorite subject, Maria Teresa. Just as Santos was getting to the point Valentina appeared. The Jackal appeared with two of his men, much to Santos' annoyance. The Jackal tried to provoke him but nothing happened.
Valentina and Regina followed Bernarda who finally admitted that she only knew about Clemente because Norma had come to see her. When they refused to tell her how long this had been going on she laid down the law and stripped them of all their privileges. She was grounding them and Valentina was to forget about Santos [This would actually solve another problem]. Valentina stared at her.
Santos ordered the Jackal off the property. This could have ended in a fight but the Jackal swaggered off followed by his minions.
Valentina protested and argued with Bernarda who sang her same old song of wanting to protect them. Valentina told her she and Regina did not need her. Bernarda said they were grounded but Valentina did not take this.
Santos was certain that Marco had wanted La Esperanza for a long time. He could only do so much about this without proof because Maria Teresa would have the last word. All they could do for the moment was to watch whenever anyone from La Soltera entered the property.
Bernarda stopped, leaned against a building, and cried on her way home.
Valentina told Santos about the blowup and being grounded. She was horrified at the possibility that Regina and Clemente were siblings. He told her she should not worry about whether Rut is the father; one is not one's father and she should not dwell on things that would make her feel bad.
Esteban asked Genoveva whether she knew Bernarda's daughters. She replied that they were good girls and pretty but that Bernarda was... and Maria Teresa entered. Genoveva left the room and Maria Teresa told Esteban how much she loved the ranch.
Episode 39: Part 2 of 3
The next morning Bernarda talked with Remedios who told her she had to allow her heart to heal. Bernarda said she could not and Remedios told her that then she had to tell her daughters the truth. She said she never will, especially now.
Trejo was looking out on the square when Rut arrived. Norma and Clemente were inside the building waiting for him. Rut said it was a lucky coincidence and invited them to lunch. Clemente begged off citing Work. Rut and Norma walked off as Clemente went back into the office.
Remedios told Bernarda she had to tell the truth and clearly. The girls needed to know. The past turns up unexpectedly and bites you on the tush and she could not wait much longer.
Adriana and Irasema argued. There had been no progress in their unholy mission and Adriana ended this saying that if she came up empty she was of no use to her [so much for friendship forged in adversity].
That night Trejo took Clemente to the saloon and ordered shots. He drank his and told Clemente his story. Flashback to Trejo's mullet-haired youth when he was in love with a woman named Vanessa. The flowers he brought her in the afternoon and the serenade outside her house that night did not serve his cause as he got a pail of water thrown on him. He felt like a fool. “Love is cruel,” he said. Clemente said that was awful but he should not have given up hope. Trejo recommended that Clemente forget Regina. He would not; she was not like this. They drank a toast. [Methinks that Trejo would have liked being a father.]
Marco told the Jackal to move some stuff, but only a few things by one guy. He did not want to attract attention. The Jackal walked off and Bernarda appeared. Marco saw that she had been crying but she was not willing to talk. They walked away.
Adriana and Irasema went inside and argued again. Irasema did not want to recruit girls for sex slavery but Adriana said they had no choice. They had to do that or suffer a worse fate.
Maria Teresa showed Esteban the ranch's financials. He was impressed with her efficiency and Santos' management. Genoveva entered to tell them that dinner was almost ready and she was going out. Her hair was loose and Maria Teresa told her to have a good time. She then told her father to rest.
Irasema did not want to do this; she wanted a peaceful life in Puerto Bravo. Adriana said this was the only way. Irasema downed the shot, saying she would get on this first thing in the morning. She drank a bit from the bottle, then poured herself another shot.
Episode 39: Part 3 of 3
Marco and Bernarda entered the stable. Neither was satisfied with the other's answers as to what was up with them. He finally said he was looking to make life better for her and her daughters “because this is your home.” She turned her back on him and he said “I don't want to see you sad.” They began stripping and it looks like they went all the way.
Maria Teresa and Esteban talked about her love of La Esperanza and how she had good people to work it, especially Santos.
Regina looked at Clemente's drawings and thought about him, flashing back to kisses and other tender moments. She cried. [Por supuesto]
Esteban talked about having many memories of the hacienda. He and Lucia had been very happy and he had cared for her until she died. He had left the place then and had been away from it for a long time. There were notes of guilt and sadness in his voice. He told Maria Teresa she was saving the place. He was startled at the sight of Tita the tarantula. Maria Teresa told him that she ate the insects that entered the house and admitted she was afraid when she first saw her.
Santos sat with Valentina in Bernarda's kitchen wondering where she was. They decided to check the stables.
Bernarda sat up and said she had to go. She told Marco to go. She was feeling guilty, saying that this was a mistake. He said “My only mistake was losing you.” He left. [Obviously someone voh-de-oh-doh-dohed.].
Santos and Valentina ran into Cris en route. After a few pleasantries Cris went on his way.
Norma and Rut came home. He seemed a little drunk. He tried getting frisky but she stopped him, saying she had to know about Clemente and whether Valentina's accusations were true. They ended the scene on the living room sofa.
Cris was in the hacienda and saw Genoveva with her hair down. After a little flirtation they left.
Bernarda had put herself back together before Santos and Valentina entered the stable. She said she had had a lot to think about and said they should go home because it was late. Valentina kissed Santos and followed.
Cris and Genoveva planned how they were going to provoke Susi's jealousy.
Marco entered the stable and Santos demanded to know what he was doing there at that hour. Marco commented that he and Maria Teresa would talk about future arrangements and made his intention clear that he would be hanging around.
Urban, this was an engrossing, superbly written summary. I savored every single word.
My favorites included “[Obviously someone voh-de-oh-doh-dohed]” and “Trejo's mullet-haired youth”. I was a bit confused at what was said regarding “Tita the tarantula” so thank you for explaining.
Marco “was his usual (over)confident self” perfected reflected his smarmy self. It was sad to see he is Bernarda’s Achilles heel. She deserves so much better. Speaking of, regarding the as yet unrevealed history of Bernarda and Esteban, Bernarda visibly blanched when Maria Teresa mentioned she had two daughters and Esteban’s shock seemed to give credence to some type of relationship.
Rut may think he is in charge, may want to be in charge, but it is Marco who is the puppet master, pulling the strings to his advantage.
Clemente and Trejo are forging a strange bond but Trejo is a complex and interesting character. I have a feeling he is going to be instrumental in helping Clemente one day. “[Methinks that Trejo would have liked being a father]”, I think so too!
“Regina asked whether Rut was her father and Bernarda finally said he was not”. That was a relief although we know Bernarda suffered terribly because of him.
Irasema is treading water, ready to drown. I’m surprised Adriana has allowed Grim to force her into a corner.
If Bernarda remains firm in her decision to ground Valentina, perhaps he will turn his efforts toward saving the ranch. And Maria Teresa.
The Jackal is feeling free to roam at will. Santos needs to more than monitor the property for trespassers he needs to get evidence that Marco is riding roughshod over Maria Teresa. A tall order.
Diana
The Jackal is a perfect example of a sleazebag villain. So is Grim. Someday I have to come up with a new list of those.
If Bernarda demands that Santos break up with Valentina he will have to. He is not in love with her nor will he be, he has not yet boinked her, and he will need to do this anyway because he needs to be able to get along with Bernarda or one of them would have to leave the ranch.
If Maria Teresa marries Marco she will have lost her mind.
Now I'm waiting for Trejo to catch Rut abusing Clemente and Norma. That could make him turn on Rut. Marco will also turn on him for other reasons.
"Now I'm waiting for Trejo to catch Rut abusing Clemente and Norma". Urban, I agree. Rut has no use for his son and something will soon push him over the edge. There is a reason for Trejo's soft spot for Clemente and he may well save him from Rut's fury.
The Jackal makes me shiver, even more so than Grim.
Valentina is going to be crushed when she and Santos break up which is inevitable...
Diana
Urban, thank you for a great detailed recap of all the dirty feelings and drama.
Well, looks like Bernarda and Marco had a thing back in the day and the embers are still warm , Bunnyhopping on a hard , scratchy bale of hay ....yeah...no. Not romantic . Aren't they lucky nobody decided to stroll into the barn to check the cattle . Is Marco father of one or both of Bernarda's girls , or is Esteban the father of one or both? Will we ever know ?
Looks like Trejo is going to redeem himself.
The cliff-hanger (sorry, I should stop the bad jokes) - Part 1/2
We start off with some reporters annoying Emi and her family with questions like "how does being Leonardo Santamaría's novia feels like" and "your father has also been to jail, do you think your son will turn out the same". They try to stay calm, but after a while they snap.
Mau is banging on the lab's doors, demanding to get the results, because he's Mauricio Santamaría. Cause, you know, if you're a Santamaría, the whole process can magically speed up. A guard tries to calm him down and asks him about the mother of the child. Mau says she doesn't know he's taking the paternity test.
Leo remembers his conversation with Mau. Not only did he say he and Emi were novios (which I don't think is true, because they both said "we used to be friends" when they were alone), but also asked him "do you want Emi to find out you killed your father?" (I guess he's talking about the thing Susan pointed out with the car...) Leo, in the present, screams.
Emi sees more bruises on Nico, who lies and says he fell or something. When she asks him if something happened at school, he says no. (Why though? Emi would understand, I think.)
The news show Emi's family's reaction to the reporters. It looks bad, mostly because it seems to me they edited out the annoying questions and only kept the snapping. Tigre BLAMES EMI and Zaira defends her. I am SO over Tigre at this point.
It turns out the reporters were another one of Sara's schemes. She brags to Roberta about it.
Next day:
Emi drops Nico off to school and has a chat with his teacher. The teacher says she hasn't noticed anything; everything's fine in the school (geez, we need better teachers. Doesn't she remember that kid who made fun of Nico in front of the whole class? Oh yeah, sorry, I forgot, making him write stuff solved the problem.) Emi insists it has to be from here, the teacher insists it's not; perhaps it's the woman she leaves Nico with. Emi replies that she trusts that woman and she's sure it's from the school. The teacher blames her for being "aggressive". Well, what did you expect? It's her son she's talking about!
Leo and Roberta talk about the mines. She says that there might be gold in la Cueva del Diablo, who knows? Hm, maybe the Diabla who asked the question. She adds that she doesn't want the miners to stop their work. Suuree, that's definitely why she said that... Leo asks her about Gael; why did she get Marijó to testify? Roberta says she "realised she made a mistake" (you know, a teeny tiny one: she sent someone to jail) and BLAH BLAH tries to manipulate Leo.
Mau meets with Emi. He tells her, for the 735th time, that he's in love with her and wants her to give them a chance. She says, for the 735th time, that she loves his brother and he (Mau) has a fiancé. Mau asks her about Nico's dad. She says she hates him and would even kill him if he started searching for Nico.
Roberta sees Mau's old picture and remembers Nico telling her he doesn't know his dad. I guess Roberta is better at math, because she immediately thinks it might be Mau.
Tigre attacks Ramiro, the annoying miner, who's itching for a fight.
The cliff-hanger (sorry, I should stop the bad jokes) - Part 2/2
Míriam goes to Seb's office (how did she find him?) She wants a job and he shows her some available position. She gets excited about it but then (randomly?) changes her mind? She goes to leave and Seb stops her and tells her to go back to her office to talk. Unfortunately for them, Adalberto, who's chatting with Fidel right above them, sees this. He starts telling Fidel about how he feels when he's with Míriam, FF-->
Marijó goes to Gael's. Zaira is polite with her, but Tigre isn't when he arrives. He tells her to get out and whines about her family bringing them misfortune or something! Gael says Marijó WON'T leave; she gave all her inheritance "to that Patrona woman" 😂 to get him out of jail. That shuts Tigre up, FINALLY.
Mau is doing his favourite hobby: drinking and whining. He video-calls Emi, who's with Leo and tells her he loves her and she's the best thing that has happened to him. He's going to jump off a cliff. Emi and Leo try to find him but he hangs up.
Ramiro tells La Patrona he's going to report Emi and Tigre to HR for work violence or something. She thinks it's a good idea?!
Míriam tells Seb that her boyfriend is jealous blah blah FF-->
Emi remembers a special place Mau showed her once. She and Leo make their way there.
Sara pops up to talk to Roberta about Leo when this Dolores woman tells them Mau is trying to commit suicide. Roberta freaks out and Patricio tries to track him? I missed the part when he is able to do that...
Emi and Leo find Mau, who's at the edge of the cliff.
Roberta, Sara and Patricio are close to the area. Sara tells Roberta to hace faith. "There's no god", Roberta says. "Where was god when I needed someone to save me? Where's god now?" Sara tells her this way of thinking won't help. "Try to think, think of where he can be!" Roberta flashbacks to a scene with Ignacio and BOOM remembers the place. They run there, on the road where the bottom part of the cliff is.
Emi is trying to get Mau to not jump off. Roberta, meanwhile, starts screaming about the "maldita mujer". Geez, woman, she's trying to save your son!
Emi tells him everything is going to be like back then. Leo looks over a bit weirdly; I guess he remembers the "we were novios" talk by Mau. Mau seems pissed off by Leo, but Emi manages to calm him down a bit. She says Nico loves him. Mau remembers the picture Nico gave him and shows it to Emi. He asks her to forgive him. She says there's nothing to forgive, but he insists, without telling her the rapist bit.
Just as he's more calmed down, an ambulance arrives. He looks down and sees Roberta, Sara, Patricio and the ambulance dudes. Guess what? He freaks out and screams to them to leave. Emi looks like she'll probably convince him not to let her hand and fall; but will she make it?
And on that note, we have a Fin del Capítulo.
We will know even if it waits until the finale. It's had a lot of build-up and Remedios is adamant that the girls have the absolute right to know. I'm sure that seasoned writers at the network know how outraged viewers would get over that kind of omission.
Weirdo, thank you for every detail of a literal cliffhanger.
It looked like Mau and Emi were teen friends in that flashback before the bottle became his bff.
Yes, Roberta is awful , but she is better at math than her son. Maybe she was in a STEM program at school before she became a bitter itch .
Mau had a grip on Emi's arm that made me worry that he was going to take her off that cliff with him. Leo was lurking behind Mau . Now what ?
Uh oh Adalberto is now going to have it put for Seb . Seb had his arm around the floozy.
Tiger is now not just stupid, but also insufferable.
And what is up with that whole slander campaign? I mean, what is the final goal? And didn't Rooberta say she needed Emilia to stay? I'm assuming Sara wants to drive her out of town but isn't it too early for this? Because I have a feeling she is going to lose her job soon.
And what made Miriam go on a job hunt? I don't remember what her and Adalberto's last scene togther was but something must have happened. I only remember she got money from him.
waterlily, I don't think that Miriam is interested in a job . I think she is very interested in Seb and figured that it might be a good idea to get a job where he is . Adelberto is not going to like competition from a young guy. Ha.
Weirdo, thank you for tempering last night’s craziness with your insightful humor and wisdom.
“The cliff-hanger (sorry, I should stop the bad jokes)” – no don’t stop, please! I laughed out loud.
“Mau is doing his favourite hobby: drinking and whining” was right Weirdo. He is a deeply troubled selfish self-serving ingrate; Roberta’s love and devotion to him is still perplexing.
Mau is obviously crazed standing at the edge of the ravine. Waterlily, I hadn’t understood that “It seemed at one point Mauricio wanted to take Emilia with him because he said death is peace.” Susan, your “Mau had a grip on Emi's arm that made me worry that he was going to take her off that cliff with him” also illuminated that scene for me. Thank you both.
“Mau asks her about Nico's dad. She says she hates him and would even kill him if he started searching for Nico”. From the pictures of a young Mau, it doesn’t seem that there is any doubt he is Nico’s father. I wonder if anything will be done to change the paternity results, it just seems too early in the story for this bombshell revelation.
“Gael says Marijó WON'T leave; she gave all her inheritance "to that Patrona woman" 😂 to get him out of jail. That shuts Tigre up, FINALLY” was perfect Weirdo. I like imperfection in supporting characters but I no longer like Tigre who is a bit of a tyrant.
I was so disappointed Nico didn’t confide in Emilia about yet another bruise. Fortunately, Emi has put two and two together. And the teacher, rather than being alarmed and vowing to keep a close eye on him, chastises Emi.
I think Mau is far too much of a coward to jump. Sadly ☹
Diana
Thank you Urban! Excellent as always!
I keep coming back to: 'How old is Valentina?' Mommy can still ground her?? Then again Martina on Eternamente would probably still try grounding her sons so maybe it isn't an age thing. Vale definitely shouldn't be with Santos if she can still be grounding, no matter what her physical age is.
I two had the maybe Estaban is the father of one or both of Bernarda's girls, but the vibe is off. We have only seen Bernarda angry and distrustful of men who are close to her and men in general, it seems like if she had been with Estaban she would have some sort of an issue with him even if she toned it down because he's the boss.... but Bernarda seemed genuinely happy to see Estaban even if a little nervous. There's definitely some sort of history there but I don't think it's as lovers. I'm guessing Estaban is the one who took care of her and gave her a place to live after the rape and maybe it's just that he knows so much about her and has seen her at her most vulnerable. They were both very uncomfortable with the daughters reveal though, so who knows. Speaking of, is it possible Regina and Valentina are twins? They look about the same age and given Bernarda's attitude and trauma, it might make the most sense if the girls have the same dad because they were born at the same time and Bernarda was only pregnant once.
Norma was ridiculous continuing to demand answers after it was clear Bernarda didn't know about Regina and Clemente. Lady, she can't tell you what's going on if she doesn't know! smh
Did it seem as though Marco actually had some warm feelings for Bernanda ?
I got the feeling Val was older than Regina because she is so protective of her.
They aren't twins. There was a line in an early episode that said that Valentina is a year older than Regina.
They have to be legal adults or Bernarda could not have been persuaded to allow Santos to have a relationship with Val. They are younger than Maria Teresa and I doubt they went to college.
Only 21 episodes remaining.
There seem to be lots of new shows in the works with some of our fav actors.
Marco said Te Amo to Bernarda several times, I don’t know if it is truly love or obsession or possession, but he does seem to have genuine feelings of some sort for her.
Thanks, Weirdo.
How does Roberto fail to see that Mauricio is a danger to himself and others? Is is she actually hoping to use him to destroy others and/or hoping to destroy himself when he stops being useful to her? She isn't stupid so should she not have realized that shouting at him could seriously do more harm than good?
Jenny is a real idiot. Here is hoping she and Mauricio don't reproduce, but that may be due to his failure to rise to the occasion.
Mauricio is too crazy too fast, like Diego Amozurrutia's Alejandro in Cabo, which I gave up on. However, Osvaldo de Leon is a stronger leading man than Matias Novoa was so I'm probably in for the long haul. The previous version of this was 128 episodes and we are only a week behind Mexico.
More tomorrow; I'm turning in for the night.
Thanks everyone!
Susan, "Maybe she was in a STEM program at school before she became a bitter itch" LOL made my laugh. Thanks.
Waterlily, I have the same questions! And I don't remember that last scene with Míriam and Adalberto; either something got cut from my video or it was one of the episodes I didn't watch...
Thanks to both Susan and Waterlily for their clarifications on the last scene. I re-watched that and Mau was indeed doing all these locuras, like wanting to take Emi with him. Yikes.
Diana, "I wonder if anything will be done to change the paternity results, it just seems too early in the story for this bombshell revelation." It does seem early, but in the OG it was revealed to the viewers in the beginning, when Fer ("Mau" here) told his mom Antonia ("Roberta" here). For some reason I think it was in episode 6 or 16 or something. It was definitely early, which was a surprise as you say. I wonder if they're going to change that.
"And the teacher, rather than being alarmed and vowing to keep a close eye on him, chastises Emi." was perfect.
Lol, yep, I don't think he'll jump as well. ¡Que lastima!
After re-reading the Caray Caray recap for La Patrona's #6, I am now confident to say that the rapist revelation happened to us, the viewers, in episode 6. If only I could remember when it happened for the rest of the characters... but it wasn't very late. Weird, but I liked it.
Thanks, Jarifa. "Heckle and Jeckle" -- ha! Perfect description. Meliton and Felipa are exactly what Ignacio needs.
Maybe Ignacio hooking up with Cassandra will make him less volatile with Cecilia? That said, I don't like him moving on with another while Cecilia is in such a depressed state. I hate that he's never done anything "for" Cecilia. It's all been about him and his (understandably deep) hurts and her trying to support him.
Martina's sadness is heartbreaking and thank goodness she has Gabriel, BUT I remember her cruelties to Paula (even saying "I don't care" when Paula said something about losing her parents at a young age), making Luis feel like dirt when she found out about his crush on Paula, making Luis feel like dirt when she thought he was gay, etc. I don't recall Martina looking inward at her own failings and apologizing for any of them. She could use some visits with a psych.
