Notes from the couch . . .
Page 1
Things seemed a little disjointed in this episode.
1. As Martina begs Paula's help to be with Gabriel who is waiting for her at the gates of heaven, Paula cries and shakes her head. Martina asks Paula to give her the butterfly pin. She kisses it and tries to hand it over to Paula with all of her love. Paula shakes her head again as Martina tells her she is the one who should have it now. Paula tells her that the pin belongs to her and nobody else. She is grateful but the Monarca isn't complete without it. She pins it on Martina's pajamas.
TWO DAYS LATER
2. The doctor has made another house call and tells the family that Martina is recuperating and before long she will be ordering them all around. Ironically, the illness is now doing her a favor by letting her forget the pain she felt from Gabriel's death.
3. Paula goes to her room. Rogelio follows her and she breaks down from all of the stress and not sleeping. He tries to comfort her the best he can.
4. Micaela sits with Martina. No, Martina doesn't want anything to eat. She asks Micaela how Gabriel died. Micaela explains that Gabriel died peacefully loving her. He was very happy. Martina switches subjects and tells Martina that she must know that she has always loved her so very much. Micaela says she has known that. Martina takes off her strand of pearls that belonged to her grandmother. They were passed on to her mother, her and now they belong to Micaela. She thinks that Micaela has the same dignity of all of the women who have worn them before her. Micaela kisses her hand feeing so honored. Martina says she is the one who is honored for the loyalty, friendship and the great love that Micaela has given to her family. Micaela tells her that she loves her so very much, also.
5. Rogelio sits reading while Paula sleeps. Paula has a nightmare where she injects Martina with poison as Jazz wanders in. She awakes with a start and tells Rogelio about her dream as well as about Martina asking her to kill her after Gabriel's death. Rogelio listens and holds her.
6. Later, Rogelio and Paula talk. He does not seem surprised about Martina wanting to die. He explains that Rogelio was Martina's support and the they loved each other ever since they were young. In tears, Paula says that Gabriel's death has put everything in perspective and how they are wasting time on misunderstandings. They are focusing on conflicts and ignoring what is really important: their love and their family. Rogelio doesn't want to fight any more but to be happy. Through his tears, he tells Paula that without her, he doesn't function, he doesn't exist. She doesn't either without him. They love each other. They kiss.
7. Romina is now living with Cass and Ignacio. She gets a doll house she always dreamed of having.

FOUR MONTHS LATER
8. Felipa has had the twins. Melitón wants to shout his joy out to the four winds. Felipa thinks not. He will scare everyone.
9. Martina is sitting outside with Imelda, Ada and Micaela. Paula and Lucas arrives. He has brought her a balloon and an orchid. Martina thanks him. Orchids are precious. She tells him to let the balloon go. He looks horrified as he releases it. She smiles explaining that she feels as free as a balloon today. They also give her a watch with a GPS tracker that the doctor recommended. Lucas explains how it works and he has it paired to his phone. Martina jokes that it is okay as long as the bank can't find her and get money from her. They all laugh.
10. Blanca's water breaks and she and Marco are off to the hospital. She has her baby girl.
11. Ricardo proposes to Cecilia and she accepts.
12. Luis shows Andrea an article that he has written.
13. Ignacio makes a rare visit to church to have a one on one with God. He asks that his mother and father be forgiven because he has already forgiven them himself. He thanks God for allowing him to be a father twice over. He also thanks God for showing him that he and his life were not mistakes even though his birth was not planned.
14. Paula and Cecilia hand out diplomas at the music school. Art is the best ways to fight violence. Lucas cheers for MUSIC!
15. Romina is impressed by the variety of foods she is given at her new house. Ignacio asks how she likes her new family. She says she doesn't know what a family is. She misses her friends. Cass and Ignacio will take her to visit the next day. She wants them to adopt them all like they adopted her!
16. At dinner, Martina is totally out of it. She sees Felipa and thinks she is "Beatriz". Fernando is her husband "Rubén". Martina wonders why they are all so quiet. She thinks that Rogelio is "her father". Martina is serious and does a lot of staring. She tells "Beatriz" that Imelda is growing up so quickly and is becoming very good looking. It is time for them to have another baby. Martina lectures on about life being very short and talks about Rogelio and Imelda getting engaged. Her sons cannot help but find the humor in it all. Marco changes the topic and asks her how her very handsome sons are doing. Even Lucas gets involved as "Rogelio" telling her that "little" Fernando is away at camp. "Rubén" says that he prefers Fernando for Imelda. He is the smartest of her sons, hard working and really cute. As for Rogelio, he is a bit of a womanizer. He is capable of ending up with a woman from the city. Abhorred, Martina says NO to that. She will not permit her sons to marry women the family doesn't know. Martina asks Imelda if "little" Fernando suits her. Imelda nods. The real Rogelio has had enough and escapes to have a tequila.
Page 3
17. Outside, Felipa tells Melitón how uncomfortable she was with Martina. Paula agrees and tells them they just have to go with it. The problem is that it is happening more land more frequently. Paula talks to Melitón about getting Martina a new orchid she doesn't have.
18. Ricardo has a gift for Cecilia: his divorce papers. Now that he is officially divorced, they can set the date for the wedding.
19. Paula bring Martina a new orchid and asks if she likes it. Marina looks at her and asks her what it is. Paula says an orchid. It is a color that she didn't have in her collection. Martina asks what orchids are. Paula explains they are beautiful flowers and are Martina's favorite flowers. She tells Paula to get somebody to take the orchid away. Paula says she will do it herself. Paula asks if she wants to play a game. Martina says NO but then says "poker, poker." She is ready to bet 20 pesos. Paula leaves with the orchid and to get the cards.
20. In the kitchen Felipa and Melitón are standing holding their infants. Micaela and her eagle eye spot a ring box hidden in one of the blankets. She gets angry and starts yelling at Felipa for having taken something. The box gets passed to Honorio, who breaks Micaela's tirade by getting down on one knee and proposing to Micaela. She says YES! and literally jumps up and down. (I loved it)
21. Imelda brings the kids over to see Beatriz but soon finds herself enveloped in Beatriz's bitterness and she doesn't like it. Beatriz is still focused on beating Martina at the foundation game. She will not rest until she does. Imelda asks if she is okay obsessing about the foundation like she is. Imelda tells her to find something to do like going to therapy or working with her. Imelda is horrified that she would ever be working for her daughter! Imelda decides it is time to leave.
22. Feeling better, Martina tells Paula that she is grateful for everything that she has done for the family. Paula is also grateful for being a part of such a great family where everyone manages to get along and put the family first. Martina kisses Paula on the forehead. Paula smiles. Martina sends Paula to get her book.
23. Rogelio offers to bring his mother the book and finds her walking barefoot in her room. He hands her the book and she throws it on her bed. She is staring at her feet and asks him if he has ever noticed how beautiful her feet are. Rogelio thinks that everything about her is beautiful. Martina says that walking barefoot makes her feel a certain pleasure and freedom that she didn't remember. She tells him to to take off his shoes. He does and they walk around enjoying the barefoot experience together.
24. Beatriz stakes out Rubén's place. He finally appears and reminds her they have nothing to talk about. She can talk to his lawyer. She is complaining about not getting enough money after she gave him the best years of her life and her youth. He reminds her that the judge made the determination for what she would receive each month and how much he would have left over for himself. As a matter of fact, he is giving her more than what the law stipulated. She insists it isn't enough. He tells her to get a job. She got what she deserved. He never wants to see her again.
Page 4
25. Martina announces to Paula and Imelda that she is going out. Both of her daughter-in-laws, need to go shopping. They will all go together. Paula will drive.
26. Marco is waiting with Ignacio and Fidel for Fernando. Fernando finally arrives with a recognition plaque that the Iturbide Company received from the Chamber of Transportation. Ignacio addresses the portrait of their father and says he hopes that Hipólito is proud of each own his sons. Marco says his company is in good hands and they will continue to protect it and grow it.
27. Martina, Paula and Imelda are enjoying some refreshments in the middle of their shopping trip. Martina bought a puzzle with 1,000 pieces for her and Lucas to do. Paula mentions a certain after shave lotion she wants to get for Rogelio. Martina and Imelda are interested in perfumes and are ready to help.
28. Andrea has found somebody to run her father's law firm for her in Mexico City and Luis is going to self-publish his book.
29. Paula, Imelda and Martina are at the men's scent counter, smelling the different products. When Martina smells one product, she remembers her mothers spraying herself with an atomizer . She asked her why she always smells like flowers. Back in the present, Marina is suddenly disconnected and wanders off without Paula and Imelda noticing. Suddenly , they do notice and go on a search for her.
30. Rogelio has renamed his restaurant: La Cocina de Paula (Paula's Kitchen).
31. Imelda hurries away in one direction and Paula in another. As Martina walks quickly away, she drops her watch with the GPS. Paula finds it on the ground. Paula finally sees Martina. Martina sees her and tells a security guard that a woman is following her. She has hurt her. She is trying to rob her. She stands behind the guard as Paula tells Martina how worried they were for her . The guard warns Paula not to come any closer. Paula tries to explain what is going on as Martina starts to run again. As Paula tries to follow Martina, the guard forcefully pushes her back. Paula is launched over a wall and falls to the concrete walkway at the bottom the steps below.
That is it for me. Please feel free to add anything I left out.
Thanks Jarifa, disjointed was an understatement! Of course part of that was my fault. I missed Felipa and Melitón having twins and saw them holding babies just before Honorio proposes. It took me a minute to realize who the babies were. So I either dozed off or went too far when I fast forwarded through the commercials. I also missed the 4 months later so was surprised when Ricardo proposed to Cecilia as last I remembered she wasn’t ready to move in with him.
I enjoyed Marco’s frantic activities when Blanca’s water broke! That surprised me! That, to me, would have been how Melitón would have acted!
Ignacio really has come a long way. He has probably changed the most.
“Beatrice stakes out Ruben’s place” was a perfect description! At first I was afraid she was waiting for Martina somewhere. And was going to attack her!
That fall looked bad! Anxious for tonight. Kept thinking something would happen to Martina, but never Paula.
Liz
Gracias, Jarifa. These events were unexpected.
Beatriz' obsession is truly sick at this point. Imelda should think about keeping her children away from her and possibly getting her into a facility. I also wondered whether she was stalking Martina.
The security guard should be sued and lose his job. That was a nasty fall and completely unnecessary... except for the drama.
Paula's reconciliation with Rogelio disappointed me quite a lot. I didn't like how selfish and self-absorbed Rogelio was but it didn't feel like they addressed it in any way. At one point he said he felt selfish for dealing with his personal growth, but this perhaps the only moment when I didn't think he was selfish. They had a huge argument when Paula came back after she learnt about Erica and I remember Rogelio only talking about his own feelings then. Just like with Violeta's story, this feels like a lot of drama with no pay-off. So Rogelio is still a blockhead? He might be a good person, but not all good people are good partners I imagine. I almost expected rogelio and Paula would go to therapy.
Martin'as old personality coming back was disturbing. She really was a very unpleasant women. I do think she could have shown her appreciation for Micaela earlier. Micaela really deserves a gold medal for tolerating Martina for so long. Not many servants would last with her.
Does anyone remember how the relationship between Honorio and Micaela started? I thought at one point she wanted to be with him but he wasn't interested?
Thank you Jarifa for your spectacular recaps this week. I am being harassed by the cough that WILL NOT go away and I fell several episodes behind because I was too exhausted to pay even a little attention to something new, so I binge watched Superstore and turned my brain off. I caught up this morning though.
These episodes were heart breaking and very well acted. It's nice to see everyone getting along but it's a bittersweetness as the bonding is forged in such challenging times. I can't imagine watching your mother lose it little by little day after day. My father is 80 and he gets confused and is forgetful but it doesn't look the way Martina's illness is here. His added challenge is that he has very poor hearing even with hearing aids so it's difficult sometimes to know if he's truly confused or if he just heard incorrectly and is repeating what actually occurred as far as he knows. It makes him very challenging to interact with because 90% of the time he either can't hear you, or he answers a question you didn't ask him....it's really sad.
Paula's fall at the end was so SHOCKING!!! You're expecting something to happen to Martina and then boom....wow! Tonight will be electric!
Waterlily, Melton and Felipe got Honorio and Micaela together by sending Mica some of Honorio's poetry anonymously, and sending Honorio secret admirer notes to make Mica jealous at the same time!
Jarifa, another exceptional, enlightening recap; what a gift your amazing summaries have been lo these many months.
The ending was shocking, completely unexpected. It gives credence to the necessity of having someone, non-family with Martina 24/7. She cannot be left alone under any circumstance. Sadly, Martina is deteriorating, and rapidly.
Paula fell far and fast. Under most circumstances, plummeting to the ground at such a distance, the injuries surely would have been very grave. As we are now at the end, I hope that Paula emerges relatively unscathed.
“Martina says she is the one who is honored for the loyalty, friendship and the great love that Micaela has given to her family. Micaela tells her that she loves her so very much, also” was a lovely, touching scene.
Liz, I didn’t see the “four month” either. Finally, Felipa had her babies!! SO beautiful! I loved seeing Blanca’s dark-haired bundle of joy. Mica and Honorio engaged had me smiling away. Waterlily, to add a bit to what Darcy provided, it was Honorio who was initially interested in Mica, she put him off.
And Ignacio who “…thanks God for showing him that he and his life were not mistakes even though his birth was not planned” tugged at my heartstrings. I feel finally, he will be at peace.
I’ve never seen so many beautiful orchids!
Cass’s silky brightly colored blouse (seen for a brief second) was gorgeous.
I would not hazard a guess as to what might transpire tonight.
Diana
Darcy, I meant their relationship even before we had all those episodes where Micaela kept refusing whenever he brought up the fact he fancied her. I seem to recall there was some mention of their history that pre-dated what we saw but now can't remember if I imagined it or if it really was there.
Jarifa, thank you for another wonderful report from the couch.
I couldn't watch but your recap played like a video in my mind.
Did the writers really have to injure Paula one more time and give us another trip to the hospital?
So many characters have made personal progress , especially Igy. However , Beatriz is wasting her golden years being a bitter itch instead of enjoying her last years with her daughter and grandchildren. Sad she has driven her husband away instead of enjoying the end of their lives together. She should be making happy, loving memories for her daughter and grandkids. Hasnt she noticed how quickly life can end after the deaths around her....her sister, Erica, Gabriel ?
"Make haste . The golden moments fly" Longfellow
We got So many life lessons from this show.
O T Darcy, try hot tea with honey and a hot , steamy shower .
I hope I can find pictures of the new babies. Susan
Thanks, everyone, for all of your insightful and interesting comments. I NEVER expected that to happen to Paula either. I wonder how many other surprises they will have for us in the final episode tonight.
Liz, “Beatrice stakes out Ruben’s place” was a perfect description! At first I was afraid she was waiting for Martina somewhere. And was going to attack her! Good point. You know if she had tried to attack Martina, I would not have been surprised at all. By the way she is acting, I am beginning to wonder if she, too, might be suffering from some debilitating mental condition.
Urban, "That was a nasty fall and completely unnecessary... except for the drama." Exactly, Urban. It is always about the drama isn't it?
waterlily, "Micaela really deserves a gold medal for tolerating Martina for so long." You said it! : )
Darcy, sorry to hear that you have been under the weather. There is a lot of what you have described as having circulating around here. "These episodes were heart breaking and very well acted. It's nice to see everyone getting along but it's a bittersweetness as the bonding is forged in such challenging times." You can say that again. Dealing with aging parents can be difficult. Your father is lucky to have a daughter like you.
Diana, thanks! "And Ignacio who “…thanks God for showing him that he and his life were not mistakes even though his birth was not planned” tugged at my heartstrings. I feel finally, he will be at peace." That was a nice way to tie up his journey. He went from one of my most hated characters to one of my favorites.
Susan, as for Beatriz, "Hasnt she noticed how quickly life can end after the deaths around her....her sister, Erica, Gabriel ?" She really doesn't "get it" or doesn't care. I was happy that Paula and Rogelio finally "got it" and fully reconciled. That will make Paula's fate easier to accept no matter what it is.
Thanks, Jarifa. You connected all the dots for me.
Martina's decline is so tough. The illness is bad enough, but I'm sick and tired of scenes ofd Martina being in jeopardy because someone leaves her for a moment or she loses her tracking bracelet.
It was nice though the way the family just rolled with Martina's thoughts at the dinner table.
Thank goodness Honorio and Micaela are bringing the joy.
Nice, "Thank goodness Honorio and Micaela are bringing the joy." you can say that again. : )
Jarifa: Looking forward to seeing your full-scale recap of last night's Gran Final.
Steve Boudreaux
There's an emergency here; I'll try to watch + recap Friday's episode as promised, but don't expect it sooner than tomorrow. Thank you.
Weirdo, I'm so sorry to hear about your emergency.
Please don't worry about the recap; you have far more important things to do.
I didn't take notes but why don't I post some highlights.
Perhaps waterlily might be so kind as to add her always helpful observations.
Take care....
Diana
Not in order, just from memory (heaven help me 😊)
Sebas is tearily embraced by Tigre; he and Zaira are so grateful for everything he has done. Later, Sebas visit Emilia’s grave and she is there as he gives a heartfelt, sad speech pouring out all of his feelings. I love you he tells her. Emillia is listening as tears fall down her cheeks. In a perfect world, it would be he that she loves but alas Leo has stopped that ship from sailing.
Sara is still seething having to move “home”. She and Roberta have several tense scenes but there is (some) justice when Sara happens to saunter in finding Fidel and Roberta kissing. “Hi” she smirks, waving. Roberta is caught a bit off guard but quickly regains her composure. For a few moments Sara gloats knowing their romance has continued but of course Roberta always has the upper hand, silly girl.
I have a strong suspicion Gael is not meant to work in the mine. He has half a wheelbarrow full of dirt and cannot keep it upright. He is taunted by his fellow miners and the horrible henchman/foreman (I cannot remember his name) threatens him.
Addled spent most of last night playing with tiny miniatures, reenacting war scenes. I mean don’t guys do that when they are 12?? Ack. He calls Miriam who finally answers, threatening her and telling her he has her under surveillance. Indeed she looks outside and sees several pairs of swarthy eyes. She is very upset as she hugs her son to her.
Sara has a talk with Gigi (wearing a sparky, sequin skirt) and Gigi looks as though she has trouble dealing with her headstrong daughter.
Danilo and Sara text back and forth several times. I’m not sure why they are communicating or what they said. If anyone can explain, that would be great. I did notice Danilo seems to be smitten still although seemingly very impressed with Emilia.
The sweetest moment of the night was Aleida, going to Orlando’s restaurant, christened “Aleida”! She walks in and after being rudely greet4ed by a waiter, Orlando steps in and leads her to a sweet. He if his usual kind, understanding self and engages her in conversation. She stares, eyes moist, into the face of her beloved son. Orlando leaves momentarily and Danilo calls her so she has to leave. She leaves Orlando a note and reluctantly leaves.
Fidel also visits the restaurant. He wanted something but I didn’t understand what he said. He is his usual vile self and finally leaves; Orlando has a sad.
Emilia seems to have gotten the upper hand in negotiations with Roberta but that conversation was as clear as mud to me.
It appears the trio’s revenge plans include blowing up part of the mine. Danilo drives her there and is very anxious and worried for her. Emilia gets out and enters the tunnel, but she makes noise which is overheard by Leo. Leo starts searching the tunnel, calling out, asking who is there. He is getting alarmingly near Emilia who jumps when Danilo comes up behind her. Luckily, Leo is called away right before he discovers her.
Emilia takes the dynamite out of her bag and plants it. As she starts to leave, the light shines on a solitary figure. It is Gael!! I don’t believe Emilia knows it is him but her eyes open wide and she sprints across the open space and throws herself on top Gael trying to push him out of the way. The dynamite explodes and as the smoke unfurls, we end…
Diana
"She walks in and after being rudely greeted by a waiter, Orlando steps in and leads her to a seat". He is his usual kind..."
Diana
Weirdo, sorry about your emergency. Sending you good vibrations ))
Diana, thank you for the recap . You gave me some visuals in my mind. Maybe I can find some photos online .
Seb is the best .
That must have been a poignant scene between Aleida and Orlando. I hope they get together after Fidel gets his anvil for all his cruelties , including having Aleida committed so he could steal her money and bunny hop with Roberta.
Sara doesn't deserve Danilo, but will he want her ? Will he realize the girl is his daughter ?. Susan
All I can say is that this novela turned out to be so much more enjoyable than I ever thought it was going to be when it started recapping it. It turn out to be like a classic melodrama which I have not seen many of lately. It was a comfy watch. This morning I rewatched the first episode to remind myself how the story all started. It seems like Rogelio and Paula got married in s couple weeks of knowing each other. I knew it was fast but had forgotten how fast.
Anyway, I think that the strong point of the novela was the fact that they gave enough time and room for character development. The whole novela covered about 10 to 12years(?) They allowed for long conversations and didn't seem to cut any short to fit in more action. The prime example of that was Ignacio's development with all of his therapy sessions which were a first for me in any show. It was a pleasure to see characters given the opportunity to grow and change as real people do. The casting, acting, writing and production could not have been better.
A big thanks to everyone who visited the patio but an even bigger thanks to everyone who commented. All of you kept me going especially during that dreadful run of double episodes. .
I cannot wait to read your final thoughts.
Notes from the couch . . .
Page 1
1. Imelda rushes to Paula who is unconscious. A security guard calls for an ambulance and Paula is transferred to the hospital. Imelda calls Fernando to tell him what happened. Imelda tells a security guard to find the woman with the butterfly pain and short hair.
2. Martina is seated with a security guard not understanding why she cannot leave since she didn't steal anything when Imelda arrives to get her. Martina notices that Paula isn't there. Imelda lies and says that Rogelio is having Paula pick up Lucas from school. She takes Martina home where everyone goes along with the lie.
3. Rogelio is at the hospital with Luis and Marco. the doctor tells him that Paul is stable but unconscious. After the tests they have run, they have determined that Paula has no brain hemorrhages or fractures. Paul is unconscious because her head hit hard enough to cause swelling in her brain. Rogelio is overcome with worry. The doctor tells him to calm down. It is a matter of time. He begs the doctor to please save his wife. Ignacio arrives to console him. Rogelio tells him that if Paula dies, he will die , too.
4. Imelda talks to Martina's doctor to tell him that Paula had an accident and is hospitalized but Martina didn't realize what happened because she was having an episode. She is worried because Martina's episodes are becoming more frequent. The doctor says this is the hardest part of the illness when the patient is experiencing two realities at the same time. He suggests that they stick to a set routine and keep her in a quiet environment away from anything dangerous. He asks that they have plenty of patience and love for Martina.
5. Rogelio prays for Paula in the hospital chapel. Ignacio comes so tell him that he can go and see Paula.
6. Rogelio sees a bruised and abraded Paula. She is in a neck brace and unconscious. He talks to her and cries. He needs her and doesn't know what he would do without her. He begs her to say with him.
7. Lucas is with Cecilia and Regina. He wants to go see Paula. He cries and asks if she is gong to be like she is forever. Cecilia tells him he has to think positive. She adds that they cannot tell his grandma the truth. They have to protect her from having another crisis. Cecilia tries to console him.
8. Before Martina arrives at the supper table, Luis brings everyone up to date on Paula's condition. Martina arrives and asks where Paula and Rogelio are. Fernando says they are in Mexico City. Andrea says they went to one of Paula's friend's wedding. Martina is suspicious saying that they would have told her.
9. Rogelio is sleeping in a chair next to Paula's bed when she opens her eyes and calls out to him. He kisses her. She says she hurts all over. She asks how long she has been there. He answers since yesterday. She asks about his mother. He explains the story they told his mother about going to the wedding. The doctor comes in happy to see Paula is back. They still have some tests to do but her regaining consciousness is a good sign.
WEEKS LATER
10. Paula and Rogelio come in carrying a suitcase. (It seems to be the same suitcase that Rogelio gave Paula along with some clothes after he tricked her into coming to Morelia back in the first episode ) . Martina asks where they have been. They have been at the restaurant. She asks about the suitcase. They say it was broken and needed to be fixed. He asks his mother for a favor: Would she get all dressed up tonight? He has a surprise for her. Martina loves surprises.
11. Ignacio visits his therapist to express his gratitude other. She can see that everything is good with him. He explains that everything has been incredible. Martina accepted him and gave him a watch that belonged to his father. She is pleased. He married Cass and they have adopted a beautiful little girl. He finally understands what happiness is. He has her to thank for making him face his demons. If it weren't for her, he never would be where he is today. She congratulates him. He asks her for a hug. She readily gives him one.
12. Imelda goes with her kids to visit Beatriz who is looking haggard. Beatriz sits on the floor pulling her hair as they talk. She complains about being so lonely. Imelda reminds her she has two little kids and a family. She always told her to take care of her family and that is what she is doing. Imelda begs her to convince her father to move back to this house they built together. Imelda refuses to get involved and blames Beatriz's selfishness and ambition for where she finds herself. Imelda says that she has no intention of keeping her grandchildren away from her but if she continues to act like this and doesn't get her brain involved in something productive, she will lose all three of them. They leave and Beatriz is left muttering to herself on the floor.
13. Rogelio is having the grand opening of his restaurant "La Cocina de Paula" (Paula's Kitchen). Rogelio, Paula, Martina, Jazz and Lucas are there as well as all of their friends and family. He explains how this restaurant is his dream. Martina toasts to the happiness of his family. Martina mistakes Fernando for Gabriel and asks him to say a few words. "Gabriel" toasts to everything always going Rogelio's way after all of the time, work and effort he has put in. It is photo time. Martina asks her "MamI (Paula) to be with her in the photo. Martina tells "Gabriel" that she loves him. "Gabriel" kisses her on the head. Marina tells her "Mama" that she loves her. They all end up toasting to the Monarca.
14. Out in the garden, Martina asks Paula to take care of the flowers when she is no longer able to do so. She is the only one she trusts. Paula agrees. She loves flowers and has learned how to care for them from Martina. Martina thinks that flowers know who loves them and with the heart that Paula has, she will always have flowers. Paula asks if she can give her a hug. Martina says NO but quickly asks if SHE can give Paula a hug. Paula says yes.
15. Paula has good new for Rogelio. She is finally getting paid royalties for her music on all platforms. He invites her out for supper to celebrate.
16. Martina reads her book of memories. We sense her desperation as she reads. She asks Micaela if her name is Marina. Micaela answers that, yes, she is Martina and the book is hers. She hands it to Micaela. She asks what her relationship is with Micaela. Micaela says it can be whatever she wants it to be. Martina seems to think that they do care a lot for each other. Micaela agrees that they do. Martina stares.
17. At supper, Rogelio toasts to the most beautiful and talented woman in the world who he is lucky enough to have as his wife. Paula toasts to the kindest and most generous man in the world. Rogelio suggests they stay where they are for the night. (It is the hotel where Paula first stayed in the first episode) Paula says she told Micaela that they would be home early. Rogelio goes on and adds that the place has meaning for them. It is magical. It is where they fell in love the first time. She asks him the same question she asked back then. "What is happening to us? Back then, he answered "Love." Here, he answers "Love then and now."
18. Back at the house, Micaela alerts everyone that Martina is playing the piano. All of the family gathers around to enjoy it.
TWO YEARS LATER
19. Martina is writing in her memory book noting that Gabriel has been gone for more than two years. Paula and Rogelio bring her a breakfast that Rogelio has prepared. He needs to leave ASAP. He has an event at the restaurant . She blesses him and he leaves.
20. Luis stops by to tell Martina that he is sending the first draft of his novel to a publishing house. He asks her to wish him luck. She tells him no luck needed. He is a success. She kisses him goodbye. Marco arrives and says he doesn't cook or write but he would still like a kiss. She gives him one. Fernando stops by for his kiss, too. Paula goes to prepare Martina's bath.
21. Paula and Martina are outside watching the kids play. Martina asks Paula to go in and get her shawl because she is cold. Paula says she won't be long and in the meantime rubs Martina's arms to warm her up. They both tell each other that they love each other.
22. Martina smiles and sees herself as a young woman walking along with Gabriel saying it has to be love with him because when she is with him the world is quiet. The playin children suddenly look like they are farther and farther away. Suddenly, Martina is back and her smile fades. She thanks God she loved Gabriel like she did. As she dies, she smiles again thinking that she and Gabriel will never be separated again.
23. Paula finds Martina dead but still smiling. She puts the shawl around Martina and sobs for her Monarca. She kisses her.
24. Martina's corpse is placed on her bed where her whole family including Ignacio says goodbye to her.
25. Lucas writes his mother that if his grandma arrives in heaven, he supposes she will, she needs to tell her that he will always love her and that she will always live in his mind and heart. He cries for his grandma.
YEARS LATER
26. Ignacio looks at a drawing of their family that Romina once drew. All of the family members are there with a heart drawn around them. He needs to get it framed.
26. Rogelio has a mustache. Lucas and Jazz now help him at the restaurant. Lucas says he has a surprise for them tomorrow.
27. Tomorrow arrives and a smiling Paula looks at Rogelio sleeping as she puts on her Monarca pin. She heads to Martina's grave. She hopes she likes the flowers she brought her. She tells Martina that she has done her best to keep the family together. It is her objective every day since Martina asked her to. She thanks Martina for teaching her about a mother's love and for giving her the family that she needed so much. She is very proud to say that she ended up being the great Monarca of Morelia's daughter.
28. Back at the house, Rogelio covers Paula's eyes as he guides her outside to a surprise party. All of their family and friends are there. It is her fortieth birthday. They sing "La mañanitas" to her.
29. Lucas is all grown and thanks Paula for everything she has done for him and shows her a letter. The surprise is that he has been accepted at the European University of Music in London. Lucas says it is all due to her.
30. Romina is 15 now and seems to be giving her father Ignacio a run for his money with her blooming social life. He seems to be on one team and Cass and Romina on the other.
31. Micaela has a special gift for Paula. It is from Martina and was especially planned for her fortieth birthday. Inside of a box is a sparkling broach as well as a letter from Martina. Paula starts to read the letter out loud. Martina writes that she has given her the broach for her fortieth birthday and if it isn't already in Paula's hair it is because she couldn't put it there. She planned the surprise with Micaela. She chose this date to give it to her because she always told herself she would be with Paula on this date. . . . Martina starts to narrate as we see her writing in her memory book in her garden. They shouldn't think that she is far away. She knows they are celebrating at a huge table in the garden fulfilling her only wish of seeing them happy and united. She is present in every flower in her garden in its beauty and aroma. Everyone is with her in this memory that continues to live on. She tells her dear Paula that the butterfly that she wears is the heart of their story. She needs to know that souls who love each other always find each other. No matter how long the trip, monarch butterflies always arrive at the place that belongs to them. She wishes her daughter a happy birthday. She loves them all. When they see and orchid, think of her. Gabriel is with her so she is in good company loving all of them eternally. She doesn't know if forgetting is voluntary but she doesn't want to.
32. Rogelio and Paula kiss.
EL FIN
Please feel free to add anything I left out.
Diana, I don't have much to add.
I have some good news, though. Addled has been told by hisasistant he needs a hair transplant. Our ladies' man is going bald.
Roberta calls Emilia to negotiate the price they asked for but Emilia refuses. Roberta says another company is interested, then E says hire that one, then.
Emilia wants to cause the colapse of one of their exits (or is it a tunnel?) because they only have one more, which is the original one. I believe all theiir operation is concentrated in the new one and if that one colapses, the work stops. E wants them to be desperate for her help.
Leo told Roberta that not only can they lose the mine, but also land and real estate I believe because those are as a guarantee.
I think Saragets a message that says the person got the right number and that the message is for her. She wants to know if it's really Danilo. I'm not sure about these two points, though.
Sara deserves no redemption because even her own mother loves her granddaughter more than Sara does.
Poor Sebas says he'd give anything just to have Emilia with him for a while longer. I hope it's not foreshadowing of him being killed just before he finds out she is alive.
For a villain, Roberta seems a bit too stupid somehow. I'm used to villains being one step ahead of everyone and she managed to run the mine. Emilia said they dig deeper and deeper to get through the hard rock in order to reach the mineral richest in gold. I thought she'd be interested in being able to keep making money.
I wonder just how cunning Emilia's plan will be. I like her using this sort of means to ruin things for Roberta. It's a contrast with Leo who is just existing in this telenovela. He complained to Joaquina he couldn't love Sara the way she wanted him to. Joaquina warned him this was a bad idea but he didn't listen. I wonder what he will say once he finds out Romina isn't even his.
Jarifa, an extraordinary tour de force that began 120 episodes ago, culminating in last night’s sad but hopeful ending.
You not only recapped every single episode (many of them double), you did so with wit, wisdom and insight. If not for everything you translated, I could never have participated in this extraordinary and heartfelt journey. Characters we grew to love, to loathe but who always drew us in and made us care. “Rogelio sees a bruised and abraded Paula” taught me yet another new word. Thank you amiga.
Throughout every carefully crafted summary, you gave us one of the most treasured and precious gifts of all, your time.
“She knows they are celebrating at a huge table in the garden fulfilling her only wish of seeing them happy and united. She is present in every flower in her garden in its beauty and aroma” was lovely and had me tearing up.
“The doctor says this is the hardest part of the illness when the patient is experiencing two realities at the same time”. Imagine how exhausted Martina was trying to cope with these debilitating moments. If there is a tender mercy here at least Martina was experiencing periods of lucidity when she passed.
A well-deserved happy ending for most of the others. I was delighted Ignacio “finally understands what happiness is”. I loved the grown-up Lucas and the scenes of the loving family all together.
The acting was exceptional, Diana Bracho was a revelation.
Imelda’s silky blue shirt and short blue feather trimmed skirt along with her undying love for kitten heels was my final fashion favorite.
What a wonderful patio! I so enjoyed everyone’s comments; it was a pleasure and honor traversing this time with all of you.
Jarifa, again, thank you….
Diana
Thank you Jarifa for this beautiful recap of the finale and for all your work on this show! You truely went above and beyond and brought so much vibrance to this special tale.
And this was a special one, not perfect as nothing is but I agree it had a classic feel and I enjoyed it so much! I didn't particularly want to watch this one but the comments we had about how the Mexican audience loved the character development drew me in and your recaps kept me hooked and the show definitely didn't disappoint!
I thought it was a little odd and maybe even a bad idea that they never let Martina know about Paula's fall. Martina was always concerned she could put someone at risk and then to have Paula hurt so badly and have Martina never know it seemed almost impossible. I suppose it's protecting her but it feels counterproductive.
I liked the peaceful death scene for Martina and once again, you felt it coming. From the way each son kissed her that morning before leaving, you knew that she was going to pass that day. It was well done.
The real eye raise moment for me was the idea that Paula was only turning 40 at the end! LOL I didn't know exactly what age I would have put her but it would have been a few years older than that. If the show spanned 12 years then she was 28 at the beginning and I would have guessed early 30s. Not that it matters of course, but it did stand out to me.
It also struck me as odd that Lucas still calls Paula, Paula. You'd think he would call her mom by then, since she is his mom. She may be his second mom but she's been his mom. From my own experience, I had both a stepdad and a stepmom. I always called my stepmother Jill (her name) but she married my dad when I was an adult. I still call my stepfather, Dad (even though he and my mom have been divorced since I was in college) but he married my mom when I was in second grade. I know he wasn't my bio-dad, I always had and have my bio-dad in my life too but I called them both dad because that's the role they played in my life.
The finale was a nice little bow. The show was a beautiful picture of resilience, growth, forgiveness - even when unwarranted and hope, and I will miss it!
Jarifa, I have tried to post my comment a half a dozen times. I have asked Rgv Chick to post it when she can.
Your recap was beyond...
Diana
Jarifa, a zillion thanks for recapping this each night. The Iturbides were an interesting bunch (at least, most of them!), and I liked keeping up with them each day. And I would've never been able to keep up without your marvelous "notes from the couch" (aka recaps). I remain amazed how you carried this off.
I enjoyed getting different views from the patio. We all seemed to be pulling for Ignacio to get better. Still, I feel like his storyline needs a footnote *Caution - Women, your violent partner may not get better. Don't stick around with him as long as Cecilia did.*
I confess some of the gran finale was so sad I had to take breaks, but they did a fine job showing how much Martina was loved and that she was at peace.
Surprisingly to me one of my favorite scenes was grownup Lucas with his stepmom.
Fernando got on my nerves, being stupid again and again, but I liked him best. He was the most vulnerable of the brothers, looking for approval and acting like crap when he didn't get it. But he, and mostly everyone, grew. He's so emotional that it's fitting that Imelda has a much cooler head, so there's a yin and yang there.
Bravo to the cast! I like older Rogelio's mustache, but oddly no one has started sprouting gray hairs. ;>
Thank you Susan! I do wonder if Danilo and Sara will be end game? She certainly doesn't deserve him.
Weirdo, thank you SO much for all the important information you added. It was vitally important and very much appreciated!!
I laughed at the hair transplant for Addled. He is pretty much bald already, right?
So, Emilia calls Roberta's bluff! Ahhh, so she wanted to collapse part of the exits/tunnel so Roberta will HAVE to meet her price. I would say that was a smart move but the dynamite was a very risky move. Is Emilia going to be able to get out of this unscathed??
I so appreciate your explaining that the mine, land and real estate are all intertwined as collateral. I can't wait for Roberta's downfall.
I am also worried for Sebas!!
Loved your "it's a contrast with Leo who is just existing in this telenovela"!
Diana
Thanks so much, Jarifa, for your perseverance in writing your recaps daily, and for a while, double episodes. You filled in things I didn’t understand and reminded me of things I had stored in the back of my mind. You weaved a wonderful story with your writing.
I really enjoyed this show and the characters. The writers took their time and we grew to love the characters in spite of their faults. I will say this finale has to be one of my favorites. It was beautifully done. I also enjoyed the years later, when they went around the table and you knew who each child belonged to. And then it looked like the crew all joined them! I have a feeling they all enjoyed working on this.
Thanks, Jarifa, for the recaps and comments. Also all the comments on the patio. A fun experience.
Liz
Jarifa, thank you so much for giving this novela the fitting final tribute it deserved . I didn't get to watch it yet ,but each scene played out in my mind thanks to your beautiful descriptions . I am very grateful for the time, talent, and effort that you so generously devoted to bringing us a detailed recap of every show. Remarkable.
To me , there were many love stories in this story as each of Martina's sons found his mate , but the love that grew between Martina and Paula, a mother without a daughter and a daughter without a mother , was special and Heartwarming.
These telenovelas are really studies in the human condition . In real life, everyone lives his or her own story. Life has a Beginning , A middle, and an end just like a telenovela , and it is filled with good and bad, blessings and challenges . Susan
Jarifa, I wanted to come out from lurking to thank you for your dedication and committment in recapping this really special novela for us.
And what a wonderful, beautiful, deeply human telenovela it was! It was a delightful surprise, and I don't think that I have ever seen one like it. Usually these things are almost entirely plot-driven, but not here. This was a studiert in human behaviour and dynamics and how we adjust and learn and evolve and (hopefully) grow. Here, the actors had to keep their fingers firmly on the pulse of the character they were playing and navigate them through their personal processes in a believable way (as opposed to just being in and reacting to and dealing with crazy and dramatic situations), which I imagine would be a lot tougher for an actor, and the cast did an outstanding job.
Thank you again Jarifa, and everyone who commented, from here in the fog and mist where we lurkers live.
Didn't someone say that this was Producer Silvia Cano's first shot at The Big Time? Well, whatever the case, I will ANXIOUSLY await for whatever her next production is, because she and her team did a fantastic job in giving us this little gem.
Thank you again!
Jarifa, congratulations on this masterpiece. You have told the whole tale brilliantly and endured weeks of double episodes. You are a star!
Martina's death was peaceful after what must have been almost three years of the torture of Alzheimer's disease. While I have major issues with the sort of mother she was for most of her sons' lives I think this a fit ending.
Is Lucas entering grad school? He didn't quite look old enough.
It looks like Imelda will have to be financially responsible for Beatriz going forward. That sounds like hell but I think she can handle this.
I'm now wondering how the original ended.
Your are all welcome and I would like to thank everyone for your very kind comments. This novela was almost always a pleasure to recap except for those double header nights but even then the plot and your comments kept me going. It became sort of a challenge for me but one that I enjoyed.
Diana , thanks for being our fashion reporter to the end! I appreciated it because I sometimes missed what was happening on the screen as I was taking notes. "The acting was exceptional, Diana Bracho was a revelation." At first, her role of Martina reminded me of her role of the difficult mother-in-law Blanca in "Mi marido tiene familia" but this took it to a whole other level.
Darcy, "And this was a special one, not perfect as nothing is but I agree it had a classic feel and I enjoyed it so much! I didn't particularly want to watch this one but the comments we had about how the Mexican audience loved the character development drew me in. . ." Exactly! "The real eye raise moment for me was the idea that Paula was only turning 40 at the end!" And I was surprised that she was 40 already! It bothers me when we don't know how old the characters are or how much time is going by in these novelas. This one was better than most with time but if you missed the blurbs on the screen you were lost.
Niecie, "I confess some of the gran finale was so sad I had to take breaks, but they did a fine job showing how much Martina was loved and that she was at peace." I am glad you mentioned how sad it was. That's one of the reasons I skipped what everyone said to Martina in her bed room. "I like older Rogelio's mustache, but oddly no one has started sprouting gray hairs. ;>" You truly have an eagle eye! I had not thought about it but you are so right.
Liz, " I will say this finale has to be one of my favorites. It was beautifully done. I also enjoyed the years later, when they went around the table and you knew who each child belonged to. And then it looked like the crew all joined them! I have a feeling they all enjoyed working on this. " ITA about the finale. It was a wonderful way to end the story. I always enjoy when they give us a chance to see how everyone has turned out in the future so I do not have to make it up myself in my head.
Susan, "To me , there were many love stories in this story as each of Martina's sons found his mate , but the love that grew between Martina and Paula, a mother without a daughter and a daughter without a mother , was special and Heartwarming." That is so well put and for me, in the end, that was the main plot of the story. A different twist from what I am used to but a totally welcome departure. I am glad hat the recaps kept you up to date until you can see the gran final.
Lurker, thank you for posting. It means a lot. "This was a studiert in human behaviour and dynamics and how we adjust and learn and evolve and (hopefully) grow. Here, the actors had to keep their fingers firmly on the pulse of the character they were playing and navigate them through their personal processes in a believable way (as opposed to just being in and reacting to and dealing with crazy and dramatic situations). I never thought about it the way. Very interesting. I, also, look forward to seeing more from Silvia Cano.
Urban, I was under the impression that Lucas was going as an undergrad but who knows? "Martina's death was peaceful after what must have been almost three years of the torture of Alzheimer's disease." Thank goodness it was a peaceful event and we didn't have to go through anything more unpleasant. It would be fascinating to find out how the Turkish version ended. I saw online that it had 300 espisodes. Yikes!
Lucas was 10 years old when he arrived in the story so that means he would be a grad student at the end. He looked a bit young for that.
No grey hair for anyone probably means an oversight or that more people than we know cover it up these days.
This was really marvelous. The recaps were wonderful as well. I felt that the actors enjoyed their characters and this made it almost real. We grew to care about all of them. My favorites were many: Paula, such a lovely person, who brought out the best in Martina along with Gabriel. Martina made me laugh in the beginning and I was sad to see her go, but with such loving support. I loved watching Ignacio work with his therapist to find his way! I really liked Cassandra and Cecilia forging a bond that will help their kids and spouses. I am so sad to see this end. Hoping to see more like this!
