El amor no tiene receta, #3, 02/28/24, The Devil can rest, Ginebra's on the case

And we’re back with Esteban offering Paz a job. She is all flustered, he explains she could handle the catering for an office event he’s planning. She says she has actually has a Chef training, but the idea of a fancy event scares her. No worries, Esteban is sure they can do great things together… for his company, that is.

People arrive to eat, but Paz must explain to them she has some issues for now and won’t be serving any food. She’s sad to lose the customers, Esteban tries to give her a huge tip. She refuses, this is much more than what the food actually cost. He waxes poetic about food nurturing the soul and gives her his contact information. They can start with his event and then maybe they can work together long term. And if she needs a hand with her restaurant, he can send a company lawyer to help. This gesture convinces Paz good men still exist.

And off he goes, big smiles on both their faces.

Ginebra is furious because having a kid didn’t help her get her hands on her husband’s money. What a waste of time and what a death sentence for Elias, she actually says. Mauro is worried about Sam, she’s just a child, she doesn’t deserve this. Ginebra couldn’t care less, the kid is a means to an end, and he has to continue with their plan.

Mireya is cornered by two goons in a dark alley. They plan to get reimbursed for the money Vermin still owes them. As the big nasty goon Rubio tries to abuse her, Mireya is barely saved by some police sirens. She is left alone, crying in the alley, feeling completely humiliated.

Paz tries to call her sister with the bad news about the restaurant being closed. Dona Lupe arrives, and she tells her instead. What are they supposed to do now?

Another scene of Ginebra abusing  her daughter, this time because Sam dared have a cookie. When she cries, Ginebra wants to take her stuffed rabbit away, but she is caught by Elias. He defends his daughter, gives her back her bunny. He notices Sam has a bruise, the girl says she hurt herself. Ginebra lies that she is only “taking care” of their daughter.

Elias asks Sam to go to her room so he can talk to her mom.

Ginebra tries to play the victim, but it looks like Elias has had enough, he realizes how she’s treating their daughter, what’s wrong with her? Ginebra says she gave him the daughter he always dreamed of, but she never got what she wanted from him. She takes care of his daughter all day long, he will never understand all the work she has to do to keep the family afloat. And she’s not even part of his will. Boohoo.

Elias gets fooled by Ginebra’s rather obvious manipulation, says he named her executor in his will, but she must make a better effort to get along with Sam. Ginebra keeps going with the devoted mother and wife act.

Enzo (or is it Kenzo?) and Nandy of the blond strands of hair flirt in the barrio (she is doing more of the flirting than he is). She notices he’s not wearing a wedding ring; he says he’s divorced. Some sparks fly.

Sam is playing in her room when Mauro arrives. She can’t wait to leave for her trip with her parents. Sadly tio Mau can’t go, he has a lot of work to do. He obviously loves Sam.

Paz asks her mom if she should accept Esteban’s help. Dona Lupe says he’s a good guy and it’s not like they have a choice. Paz says she will go back to selling tacos on her bike also, she can’t sit around doing nothing.

Salomon arrives and Paz asks him whatever happened with his novia, Gema, because her madrina came and closed their business. Salomon didn’t think things would turn out this way, he’s so sorry.

Mireya gets home and tells the family that Rubio tried to rape her. Salomon wants to go after him, but he’s stopped, he could get into trouble, too.

Some guy-talk between Esteban and Enzo about Paz. He likes her, Enzo thinks it could be more, but Esteban says she is just nice, she told him about the big tragedy of having her daughter taken from her. And she helped him reconnect with his humble origins in the pueblo where he was born and remember the daily struggle. Enzo realizes he plans to keep seeing her, Esteban pnly admits to wanting to help .

Enzo met a woman, too, and while Esteban is supportive and says it was high time he met someone, Enzo is pretty adamant he and Nandy can only be friends.

Later Esteban and the kids are in the chapel for Berenice’s service. He missed dinner because he had car trouble. Both Gala and Bosco look guilty, and Esteban is upset because they lied to him, what happened to the car, were they drinking? Gala says no, she just had an accident. She apologizes, but he’s disappointed because they could have hurt themselves. They are both grounded. There is no need to lie to the people you love, never forget that.

They go sit on a bench, talk to their mom. They all miss her so much.

Elvira arrives to demand an explanation! Will Esteban confess that he killed his wife already?

As the kids leave to avoid the conflict, Elvira continues with her nasty accusations. His mother should be so ashamed for having giving birth to such a man.

Esteban would like to avoid fighting in the chapel, he won’t tolerate one more insult from her. Elvira swears to make him pay!

Mireya can’t get over what almost happened to her. Paz blames herself, Lupe rightfully blames Vermin. Paz wants to call the police about the attack and has made up her mind: they need to improve their lives.

Ginebra, playing the perfect mom, is on her way to the country house with Elias and Samara. Oh, how much fun they are going to  have together!

They are attacked by masked men wanting to kidnap Samara. Ginebra and Elias are dragged from the car (and Ginebra actually looks scared until she demands the goons to take her instead, so she’s obviously faking).

They then grab Sam, chloroform her and put her in the back of a car, while Elias screams. One of the goons helps Ginebra stand up, she smiles and goes to face her husband.

She tells him how much she hates him, she only married him for his money but she never cared for him. She only got pregnant to get him to marry her, but she never loved their daughter, either, she was always pretending.

Elias is shocked by her treachery. She grabs a gun, points it at him and adds that Sam is not even their real daughter, that one died and the kid they raised is just a nobody that she stole. Elias doesn’t even have the time to register all of this because she then kills him in cold blood, a single gunshot to the head.

Her voice as even as ever, she then orders the goons not to touch the body.

Mauro arrives and sees Samara asleep in the back of the car. He sighs.

Ginebra asks him to slap her over the face because she must appear as a victim, too. He refuses at first, but he eventually punches her (and it’s quite satisfying to watch). Then she asks one of the goons to shoot her in the arm, make it even more believable.

Mauro is opposed to this madness, but he does nothing to stop it. Now Ginebra wants to be left alone, otherwise the plan won’t work. She only asks that her brother take Samara and kill her. Kill her!

Everyone leaves and Ginebra dramatically falls to the ground, next to Elias.

Paz is at a support group for parents who lost their kids. They are all wearing t-shirts of missing kids (and I believe these are real cases, so by the end of the scene I’m sobbing).

Paz explains how especially bad this week has been for her, because it was her daughter’s birthday and her family has so many problems, she can’ take it anymore, she must stay strong for everyone. One of the other moms asks her to go ahead and just have a good cry, it will help her some.

Paz says she doesn’t even have a picture of her daughter, she never got the chance to meet her or hold her. May God give them strength to keep going.

They hug it out and Paz remembers the conversation she had with Esteban about her baby and his encouragements.

Back at the house, Elvira shows Esteban the video she got, he furiously says it’s obviosuly a fake, why would anyone send this after six years have passed, his conscience is clean. He didn’t kill Berenice, but if she’s so certain he did, then go to the police. Whoever sent her this video is trying to manipulate her and her pain is so big, she is being blinded and so easily fooled. She needs to forget her prejudice and together they need to figure out who killed Bere and is trying to destroy them.

What reason would he have to kill the woman he loved? Elvira thinks he could be after the money, slaps him when he calls her loca. The kids are listening for a bit from behind the door, but then they leave, as they don’t understand what is being said.

Back to the fighting, Elvira says she’s coming back to live in the big house. Esteban isn’t against the idea, he’s sure the kids would love to have her around. And she can even have an office at the company if she’d like one. She reminds him she’s the owner, he says yeah, but he’s the one in charge and he has a word to say. He’s always been a good father and leader.

Elvira swears she will drag him to jail as soon as she can prove the video is not a fake. And she will take the kids away from him, too. Esteban can’t wait for the day she has to swallow her words and admit how wrong she’s been.

Later Esteban is alone, remembering sweet moments with his wife, asking her for guidance. He’s hugging her portrait as Paz calls to accept his proposal. She really needs the money for this and that and she rambles in a cute way for a bit.

Esteban offers to stop by the restaurant to explain to her what the new job will be about. It’s a deal.

Paz, Lupe and Nandy all try to encourage Mireya, they will always stand by her. And they will always survive together. Mireya feels guilty for what happened, maybe it was the way she was dressed or maybe she’s done something… Paz and Nandy make it clear she is not to blame! Mireya decides she needs to be strong. For their family!

There is a knock at the door, Esteban arriving to talk to Paz.

The goons placed Samara in a sealed box that they pushed down the hill. We can see her inside, and we know she’s not dead because of the first few seconds of the first capitulo. No actual real person would survive this fall, but in novela land why not?

Mauro asks them to stop and leave him alone for now.

As he goes down to the box, he remembers his sister’s instructions: Samara will officially be declared missing and she will play the destroyed mother, crying to all the press about her loss. But Mauro can’t leave any traces of the kid, he needs to burn the box with Samara inside. He says getting to the fortune won’t be so easy and they won’t be able to pull anything like this ever again because all eyes will be on them. This is exactly what Ginebra wants, because they will control the narrative and the people will believe what she will want them to believe. She will be the poor widow who lost the two people she loved the most. All that Mauro has to do is burn that box.

Back in the woods, he starts pouring gasoline on the box, with Samara still unconscious inside.

Ginebra is walking by the side of the road when she meets some people and tells them her husband was killed. Then she “faints”.

Esteban and Paz are done talking about his event and he presses how important it is that everything goes well, his work depends on it. No pressure, right? They shake on it just as Vermin shows up, freed from jail. Paz looks frozen.

Adriana, thank you. Wow! Now we know why Ginebra was talking about Elías like he was on his way out. She was planning his exit! Well, at least we know from the first episode that Mauro doesn’t drop that match. Who will find her? Ginebra is one of the worst villains I have seen already and this was only the third episode. Burn anyone let alone a child alive? I appreciated the realistic portrayal of life in the neighborhood with Rubio and his gang being a continual threat but found it pathetic that we are in the 21st century and women like Mireya are still blaming themselves for some criminal’s attempted rape.

Great work, Adriana. You captured Satan's elite and his scum perfectly.

When they were driving in the car Ginebra gave an Oscar-worthy performance, which was the giveaway that they were driving into Hell. She is obviously a narcissist, a sociopath, and a psychopath. Unsafe at any speed and she has no limits. Her blood must run at 0 degrees Kelvin.

We once dubbed the title of The Purple Queen on Carla (Leticia Calderon) of ENDA, so now there is a potential heiress to that (for that nice purple dress). Ginebra could outdo even her evil which definitely shocks Mauro. He could turn on her eventually. So could the thugs she hired.

Rubio falls firmly into the Sleazebag villain group. I kept yelling at Mireya to grab his junk and twist hard. She needs to stop feeling responsible for the attack and start carrying pepper spray.

Elvira is insane. Something tells me her own marriage was crap and she envied her daughter's happiness so she will say anything to convince herself that Esteban is of some lower species. Did she hire Mauro to create the deep-faked video or did someone else? Who is really behind that one?

At what age do children start school in Mexico? Any lack of friends for Samara has to be Ginebra's doing. Also how can she get away with so much cruelty when there must be servants in a house that size?

Now that Vermin is out of the slammer Paz is also in danger.

Urban, “I kept yelling at Mireya to grab his junk and twist hard.” Great minds . . . Somehow that solution is not used enough.

Thanks, Adriana.
I can't stand the child abuse in this telenovela. I can't believe Ginevra's husband is so unobservant, though. She is awful at pretending. I keep thinking of what growing up in this family has done to the poor girl. I thought Ginevra's husband wasonly going to make her Samara's guardian so has he actually done it?
I like that hereit's not the enemies to lovers trope.

Adriana,

You did an amazing job of perfectly capturing everything that occurred despite having to relay one of the most overt acts of cruelty I’ve ever seen.

Watching that coffin fall down the hill, every bump serving to injure that poor, bloodied, innocent child even further was almost unbearable to watch. Thank heavens Mauro still has some shred of humanity left (speculation not spoiler as surely Samara will survive).

“Paz is at a support group for parents who lost their kids. They are all wearing t-shirts of missing kids (and I believe these are real cases, so by the end of the scene I’m sobbing)”. I was right there with you Adriana, just heartbreaking.

Elvira is reprehensible, vitriol pouring from every pore. Next to Ginebra though, she is child’s play.

Mireya, strong and proud, attacked and robbed of her dignity and confidence.

Dark days ahead but the sun will shine eventually. God willing.

Cher Adriana, merci for an excellent recap that didn't miss one bit of evil or one tiny bit of hope . Ginebra is a devil in Dior . Altair is pulling out every stop to portray this demon in tacones.

I found it very odd that all those guys were witnesses to Ginebra killing her husband and telling her brother to kill Samara. I had to take those awful , brutal scenes of Samara in that box with grain of salt saying to myself " Its just a show ...everything will be okay ..in the end." Unlike real life, good usually wins over evil in Mexican telenovelas.

The little actress playing Samara is doing an amazing job. I hope she has a counselor on the set. She is very young.

Thankfully, the writers have balanced the extreme evil and the villains with characters who are the epitome of goodness . Claudia and Daniel radiate kindness and goodness as Paz and Esteban meet and instantly connect and support each other. In the scene when they first met , they appeared to be instantly drawn together . Love at first sight .

Mr Rogers used to tell his child viewers to "look for the helpers" when bad things happen , and that is what I try to do. There is darkness in this show, but it is juxtaposed against loving families of children and parents and loyal friends and future couples .

The women in that group meeting certainly seemed to be real women dealing with lost children. I just watched " Vuelve a MI " on Telemundo which also dealt with missing children . I wonder if this is a growing problem in Mexico with these PSAs in novelas.

Great cast .

I cringe at the violence in this show ,but I like the love. I guess we must take the bitter and expect things to get better.

Urban, that is an interesting comment you made about Elvira being jealous of her daughter's happy marriage . Elvira clearly hates Esteban, but she must have witnessed the couple's loving relationship through the years. Elvira is relentless in her hatred for Esteban. Why? She really is the suegra from hell. She always looks like she is sucking on a lemon when she is with Esteban and doesn't hide her hatred for him in front of his children.

As for who hired Mauro to make the fake video, I just supposed it was Ginebra's idea because she is so large and in charge of her schemes and demanding Mauro to do her bidding . These two siblings have a truly toxic relationship. Mauro seems uncomfortable with his sister's evil , but he does whatever she tells him to do .

Jarifa, ITA that Ginebra is quite the villain, everyone kept saying in interviews that Altair was doing a great job portraying a very devilish person and nowI can see why. Altair herself has said this is the "worst" she's ever been in a novela. God help as, since this is, indeed, early days and we're already horrified by all the evil she's capable of.

Urban, I also noticed that Ginebra didn't even bat en eyelash while she was killing her husband or ordering the child she saw grow up get burned to death (WTF!). The woman has concocted this plan for the last 6 years, I almost gotta wonder what took her so long to put it into motion?

Waterlily, great to see you're watching with us!
Samara getting away from Ginebra, even if under awful circumstances, might be a blessing in disguise. Maybe she ends up with good people or, by some sort of good novela magic, in the barrio where Paz lives?
Ginebra wouldn't need her husband to name her guardian of their child, she is the mom. But she'd need him to name her his estate's executor if he were to die before his heiress, Samara, turned 18. Which is what I believe he was telling her after that brief confrontation at their house.

Diana, watching that coffin fall down the hill was actually almost funny, since who would survive such a fall? I'm keeping a close eye on Mauro, Ginebra trusts him and he's the keeper of all of her secrets. For now he doesn't have the cojones to stand up to her, but that might change down the line. I wonder what's the back story with these two, someone must have hurt them a lot to have them end up like this (not trying to find excuses for Ginebra, but having a psycological explanation for all this evil is more interesting than just being evil for evil's sake).

Susan, this novela is doing wonders for your imagination! After the other day's Vermin today you come up with Ginebra, the Devil in Dior. Love it!
I hope that Paz and Esteban, while they are good, they won't become pushovers. He seems to be handling his suegra OK, he is in charge of her company after all. I hope Paz puts a stop to whatever venom Vermin tries to spew fast, I have no patience for him.

Thank you, Adriana, for another fantastic recap! The episode was hard to watch but your recap is a treat to read!

Esteban asked the same question I had yesterday, why wait 6 years to send the video if it was real? Of course, since we know it's fake the answer is likely just that the AI technology needed to make the fake wasn't available 6 years ago. I still wonder what anyone/Ginebra has to gain by making the video now. Esteban doesn't own the company, Elvira does. Assuming Ginebra is successful in getting the hubby's money, she doesn't need Esteban for that, and come to think of it wouldn't want him ruined if she did want him for love or money....so what's her angle?

Altair is definitely bringing a new level of cruelty to this. Along with all the obvious horrible things, ordering her brother to be the one to actually kill and burn Samara is another layer of cruelty since surely, she must know he actually cares for the girl. She could have ordered any one of her minions to do the deed, but it's given to baby bro - and that's not on accident. And as someone mentioned, she's just getting started! She's raised Samara, hers or not, since the day she was born and yet she's able to order her brutally murdered without blinking an eye, that isn't dark, it's pitch black!

One thing I neglected to.mention so far was the flimsy suspension bridge at the end. Those make me nervous, like I was during the movie Sorcerer.

We saw Mauro flick the Zippo lighter but he isn't going to throw it down. He still has a conscience somewhere. His relationship with Ginebra is sick. We don't know what level of abuse they endured but nothing can excuse these sorts of actions.

We also don't know how it is that Paz and her family are dealing with no running water. How did this happen and how long are they dealing with it? Based on never having collected Vermin's debt my dinero is on Rubio who is looking also to collect more than a pound of flesh from Paz' family.

What a tale, and it’s only the third episode!!! After last night, I feel as if it has been months since I saw the first episode. I guess that means I am responding to the story deeply! It has such a juxtaposition between extreme evil and the wonderful, good characters! It’s fun to see Daniel finally get a protagonist role! Claudia is outstanding! So, although it’s very hard to watch the evil, I am already hooked! I agree that there must be some backstory to explain the relationship between Mauro and Ginebra. And all those guys participating in the fake attack is interesting. Lots of potential loose threads. Looks like a humdinger of a plot! Thank you for helpful recaps! That little girl better get rescued soon!
Babachita

Urban, the sketchy bridge didn't freak me out as much as those sketchy sky rides over the barrio. I've been in some of those high rides , and they scare me. Maybe the villains can all meet their fates \anvils in them at the end .

Darcy, I hadn't thought about technology being the reason Ginebra had to wait before sending her fake video. But I guess this is as good a guess as any.
We're assuming that she's after Esteban because protas are always being chased by nasty women, but what if what she plans to do is get him out of the way to get her hands on yet another fortune. Maybe her beef is with Berenice's family.
The simple fact that she wants the girl dead when she could simply ship her off to a boarding school is telling enough. Her cruelty has no limits.

Babachita, I believe this is the first time I read one of your comments. I tend to take breaks between novelas and it has been a while since my last. Glad to see you around, I'm also loving the story so far.
I came here to watch Daniel finally get a leading role but for now what has me hooked is Ginebra, Altair Jarabo might be doing the role of a lifetime in this one.

Thanks for the welcome, Adriana. I have been watching novelas and dizi for several years, but I seldom post anything. Your name is familiar to me, so we must have watched many of the same ones. Glad you are back with this one! I agree Altair is outstanding. The last time I saw her was the first protagonist role I have seen her in. She was great, but she is really gifted at playing evil!
Babachita

OT..Babachita...Are you still watching "Mujer?"
Susan

I always like when the galan has a loyal, ride or die buddy, and Kenzo seems like a good, supportive friend.
Susan

Jarifa: My gut feeling is there's a deep conspiracy regarding Berenice's death. I've got a bad feeling the EVIL villains will be winning here non-stop.

Thanks, Adriana, that was outstanding. What a cold blooded killer Ginebra is. And she had to tell him Samara wasn’t his, but just some nobody they stole.

We know Samara lives, but I’m trying to figure out how she will remain hidden. Anyone who finds her would turn her in to the police, who would give her back to her mother. Unless it’s the couple from Vivir de Amor! But I want Paz to get her daughter back soon. If Ginebra plans to play the heartbroken mother and grieving widow their pictures will be posted everywhere. Someone would have to hide Sam.

Esteban and Paz make a great couple. I’ll have to overlook all the evil around them, which I wasn’t expecting.

Liz

Yes, I just jumped into Mujer without going back. I have seen episodes every so often from the previous seasons, but to keep my sanity, I just started with season 3.
