El Amor No Tiene Receta #22, jueves 3/28: Love is an Underground Train
Paz kisses Esteban with gusto for 45 minutes, then pulls back and lists all the reasons their amor is imposible. (Fill in your own telenovela trope here.) He reels her back in for another 45, then suggests they have two paths: forget it ever happened and go back to where they were, or continue on the difficult and rocky road full of chutes and ladders and trolls and stuff to the big payoff. Happily, she opts for lengthier-but-more-scenic route #2. But it has to be a Big Secret from everyone who hasn't looked out their window in the past hour and a half, okey?
As they are waltzing back from the Yogurt Happy Place, Gala mentions to Salo that they caught that Rubio guy who killed her mother. Que que que??? Does she have a picture? Of course -- doesn't everyone carry a picture of their mom's murderer on their cell phone? Salo recognizes our favorite fall guy villain and hustles his girl back to the house to share that hot dropped knowledge with the rest of the family.
As they round the corner, Paz and Esteban jump apart like someone shined a flashlight into the back seat of the Buick, but the teenagers don't notice, because they're teenagers. They all compare notes on Rubio's real and purported crimes: extortion, loan-sharking, sexual and general-purpose assault, murder, mayhem, kidnapping, hiding Jimmy Hoffa's body, and showing up to a corporate briefing without a press pass. Did I miss anything? Rubio would probably be really impressed with his own criminal mastermindedness if his career weren't essentially over.
Meanwhile, back at Hotel Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Mireya's kiss is wrestling with her bang. Could Mauro just answer one little question before they hit the elevators? Does he know that Rubio guy? Like know-know him? Because he sure skedaddled in a hurry when Mauro's car pulled up -- almost as if he were, I dunno, afraid of him.
Mauro is nothing if not a quick thinker: he doesn't know Rubio, he replies, but Rubio knows him -- because he's the one who killed Elias and kidnapped Sam! That's why he disappeared so fast. This doesn't really pass the logic test, but Mireya was getting pretty uncomfortable straddling that fence, so she follows the path of (her own) least resistance.
Up in the room, she shakes herself sensible and nips into the powder room to arrange a fake emergency call from Nandy. Just then Mauro's phone rings, and of course she can hear everything, because they just don't build hotel doors like they used to. What? Sam is alive? That's impossible! The ransom guy told me he killed her! Better not let Ginebra find out or there will be hell to pay...
When Mir comes out, he grabs her by the wrists and harshly demands to know what she overheard. Nothing, she insists, nothing! What is wrong with you? He releases her and she sensibly suggests that he's kind of yucked the yum and she should just head home...but before she reaches the door he collapses on the floor in a full-fledged panic attack.
Well, she can't just leave him there hyperventilating, can she? Of course not: she's a good girl. As she helps him back onto the bed he gasps out that he's had these spells ever since he was a kid, living on the street, never knowing when the next blow would fall. She is surprised he wasn't always so suave and debonair. He begs her to stay, just so he doesn't have to be alone. (Some excellent acting here from both, adding layers to a relationship well beyond the usual level of telenovela complexity.)
Back at Casa Nicoliti, Gin is plying her pal Filipa with strong drink and bad-husband stories when Fil makes the mistake of asking for a loan. They quickly proceed to the next stage of intimacy -- a visit to the heaps o' cash room. Gin throws a couple of big wads at Filipa and tells her there's plenty more where that came from -- all she has to do is help her launder it. That's the price of hanging out with the cool kids. Filipa puts up token resistance but quickly gives in. She towers over tiny Ginebra, but she's clearly terrified of her. (We get it, girlfriend; we are, too -- even though we're pretty sure she's not real.)
Fermin is skulking around the Roble place installing an "interfon," whatever that is, and of course hits the sweet spot in the hallway just as Paz is telling her mom about the beeeeeessssssoooooo. (Barrio house doors aren't much, either.) He gets an earful of details he doesn't want, including a lot of value-added from Dona Lupita about what a sucky husband he was.
Esteban is waxing lyrical to Kenzo about said beeeeeessssssoooooo when Gin phones. She heard noises and she's scared and she's locked herself in the safe room and oh Esteban, Esteban! (Of course she's actually sitting in front of the fire slurping malbec in her negligee, but you knew that.) Our galan is gentlemanly and comforting, while Kenzo makes faces in the background. Afterward Kenzo tries about five different metaphors to point out that chick has hot pants, but he finally gives up when he realizes his friend has transformed into a windup toy that can only say "Paz" and look dreamy.
The next morning, Mireya and Nandy meet up outside the front gate, where Mir begs her to sneak inside and grab a change of clothes so no one finds out she spent the night in a hotel. Unfortunately, they are standing right beside...the interfon! So that's what it was for -- added drama! Next to the kitchen unit, Dona Lupita starts shouting UN HOTEL? UN HOTEL! and plotzing all over the place.
To...be...continued!
Around town:
* Elvira rattles her baby rattle and cries, remembering Gin's declaration that she could never forgive what her birth mother did to her, her, a defenseless child!
* Fobo sits in the staff quarters in his modest Dick Van Dyke pajamas, mooning over a wallet photo of the young Elvira.
* Nandy takes off her eyelashes and makeup while moaning to Lupita about her impossible love. She is still cute, though. Lupe tells her never say never, or whatever.
* Dr. Monica arrives to "examine" Luna.
* Gala takes another look at her tummy in the full-length mirror, decides she really IS fat. Here we go again...
* A blissfully Bosco-free episode, although I'm sure he's just offstage exercising his sneering muscles.
* Paz tells her family that since everything is interconnected, she obviously has to go visit Rubio in jail. What could possibly go wrong?

An "interfon" is an intercom system, a little device you can call when you arrive at someone's place and you want to let them know you're there.
But they definitely don't work how it was shown in the novela, someone actually has to call from the outside in order to hear what is being said. Oh well...
Ginebra confiding in Felipa that she has all that cash seems reckless, how does she know she can trust her?
Esteban and Paz kisisng in plain sight and then wanting to keep their relationship a secret is laugh worthy. Who will find out first they are "in luv"?
I can't believe Esteban isn't creeped out by Ginevra as she is being so obvious. Maybe it's because I'm a woman, but I'd feel uncomfortable if a person I wasn't interested in kept acting the way she acts around him. Maybe men always feel flattered by female attention?
Mauro is another scary one. How does he not get 'need the bathroom' is not a sign of 'I am all in'? I somehow imagined people like Mauro have no choice but to learn to read others because they look for danger signs. But he is more prone to paranoia.
I'm glad both Esteban and Paz agreed to give their relationship a chance. But I am always thinking the writers will disappoint me soon.
I hope Fermin doesn’t mess it up for Paz and Esteban. But better him than Gin deciding to eliminate her. Fermin is fast realizing he made a big mistake when he sold his daughter. I’m frustrated that he can’t/won’t tell Paz that Luna is her daughter.
I was sure Gin was wanting Esteban to come over and he didn’t pick up on that.
I’m hoping the doctor will learn something from Luna to put her fully on their side.
I didn’t realize Felipa had asked Gin for money. I didn’t know they really knew each other. But Felipa will soon be in over her head. Couldn’t happen to a nicer girl.

Nothing propels a blossoming romance forward more than realizing you have a heinous killer in both of your families’ midst. ☹
I hadn’t realized how psychologically damaged Mauro is. Mir’s reaction (a mixture of fear and sympathy I thought) showed how caring a person she is. Their scenes together were acted beautifully.
Ginebra actually taking Filipa into the “vault” was startling. Surely she realizes Filipa is an overly emotional mess. Whatever makes her think she will be discrete? I can only think she has already planned to get rid of Filipa the second she outlives her usefulness.
It was indeed a “blissful” episode without Bosco.

My favorite zinger was " like someone shined a flashlight into the backseat of the Buick " ...that was a walk down Memory Lane ...#parkingviolation
These writers know Daniel's strengths ...King of the Kiss. For those of you who watched " Invencible , " I am hopeful about Paz and Esteban eventually getting a HEA because Paz is much more proactive about kissing than Leona ever was . Leona was always holding back \ reluctantly drawn into Gale's kisses, but Paz is all in
and .... enthusiastic .
What is up with Gin and her new Bff ? Why was Gin in a negligee ? How did Gin decide she would go along with Gin's proposal ? She took her into the Secret Dirty Money room ? QTH???
Gin definitely wanted Esteban to rush right over and join her in the Panic Room . I hope he doesn't go . I guess he is going to fall for her charms at some point because ......telenovela. However , I hope the closest she gets to bedding him is in her warped mind ...those steamy fantasies . I loved the faces Kenzo was making while starry eyed, stoned in love with Paz Esteban was talking to Gin.
I am softening toward awful Vermin and then i come to my senses When I recall that not only did he sell his newborn baby , before he did that , he punched his pregnant wife in the face .
Can't wait to see where we go tonight .

I am now wondering: Did Berenice die on the same night that Paz had her baby? I can't remember now, I know it was roughly the same time, but was it the very same night??? If so, that's how Gin and Mau's big cover up in going to blow up - Rubio couldn't have been killing Berenice in one place and attacking Paz and Mir across town at the same time! I loved your list of all Rubio's crimes!!! So funny!!!
Yeah, I don't get Mir and Mauro.... that girl should run run run!!! I don't care if you're a completely unqualified 'undercover' spy, when you're alone in a hotel room with a man and you hear him freak out because he finds out an innocent young girl ISN'T dead, you leave the hotel room!!!
Can we be sure that Mauro wasn't faking this? He must know that Mireya is the bio-auntie of Samara; wasn't he present when Ginebra asked Vermin if he was her father? Or am I getting paranoid? We would have to expect Mauro to be so, especially if he still intends to defy the demand that he kill her. He is not Ginebra's peer in evil and may have a growing conscience, so if he was not faking this stuff in front of Mireya he needs to bail.
I would recommend he grab some of that cash, change his name, and get the hell out of there. If he has any second language he can go anywhere and work in tech.
Ginebra may be feeling less trusting of him, hence trying for a new accomplice. While Felipa is just as nasty as she is she is also far less intelligent. Or... a female accomplice may be able to do things a male one can't.
Interesting that they showed how Mauro didn’t escape his miserable childhood unscathed. If he had only formed an attachment with somebody other than Ginebra.
Why is Vermin STILL hanging around the Paz household eavesdropping every chance he gets? He served his purpose rescuing Luna. Time for him to go bye-bye.
No surprise the intercom system was going to cause problems.
Flashlights in the back seat of a Buick. Way to take me back to high school. The flashlights never came, but the worry they might sure did.
Vermin is a classic telenovela guy in some ways. He won't tell Paz that Samara is her child because he still thinks he'll get her back. If she knew what he did, he'd be lucky Peaceful Paz wouldn't shoot him in the face. The classic part is his mooning over her and having fits of jealousy throughout, a definite other guy syndrome.
ITA Jarifa. Isn't Vermin supposed to be in that room way up top? Why's he always wandering around their house at all hours. I fully expected to see him at the breakfast table.
The hotel room scene was well done and interesting. Mauro was pretty intent on bedding Mireya, and I was surprised he went BSC on her thinking she'd listened. Mireya's mixed feelings are shown well. If she didn't know what she does know, she'd go for him. But she has to keep reminding herself what he was involved with. I agree that what she heard about Gin not finding out Samara was definitely dead helps Paz to keep the child.
I know it makes sense, but I don't like the vehemence with which Doña Lupita keeps insisting on a time limit for Luna to stay. She gets downright nasty about it.
I’m late to the party, and really have my nerve crashing in without having watched this episode yet, but I just had to have a spoiler about that kiss. Yes, I agree the actor playing Esteban is very kissable. Of course it took Paz 45 minutes before resisting.
If I may go back an episode or two, I just loved how they had Gin dressed when she had on a black dress and those chunky fanned out eyelashes that looked like spider legs. They really made her up to look like a black widow.
Thanks again, Blue, for being a highlight on a Friday! And thank you to those of you who have welcomed me back. This is such an entertaining group.

I remember the details because I recapped the first episode.
When Gin realized her baby was dead she sent Mauro to fetch her another child. He asked if she needed help with the "other stuff", she quickly dismissed him, saying she had it handled. Ar the same time Berenice and Esteban were on the beach with their kids.
We'd already had the "6 years before" mention at the beginning of the capitulo and the "6 years after" when Paz discovered her baby had been taken.
