Kat, that was a simply fantastic recap. Just a wealth of details and some clever humor as well. Before I start on the episode, thanks for mentioning your sewing machine collection. And you knew what a treadle machine actually is! When I typed that in a comment, I thought people might think I was a vampire who was alive during the Civil War. I own zero sewing machines. Just today I took two T-shirts I really like over to Jacquie’s Sew and Sew, a local seamstress. I once tried to hem something, finished it, and got up to see I’d hemmed it to the pants I was wearing. I used to go to Jacquie’s often when I wore dressier clothes that needed altering (I am only 5’2”). Then, more than 30 years ago I became the accountant for a construction company and wore jeans, shorts, and sometimes sweatpants to work, plus my Birkenstocks.

The T-shirts are: An “Inaugural Season” t-shirt of the Golden State Valkyries WNBA team and a “Born with Teeth” t-shirt from last year’s Oregon Shakespeare Company. That’s the name of a great play my friend and I saw last year. These places seem to mostly sell unisex shirts, and they almost reach my knees. I’m having 5 inches cut off each of them and then, of course, they’ll hem them. I’m sure you, Kat, could do that to both in 30 minutes!

Pedro is such a simpleton, but nice. Cousin Rick is not a good guy, I’m sure. And that awful Susan has returned. For a while there I thought she just dumped her child. But I’d bet the farm she’s angling to move in. So, Pedro will have two con artists mooching off him. I’m not nuts about the kid, Peter, either. Can you even imaging Pedro on the sales floor trying to sell expensive dresses to rich ladies?

I’m confused about Ana’s job. Sofia said she was hired, and I was looking forward to scenes of her in her new workplace (away from Alberto). But she’s continuing to work at Velvet and doing the work for the new company at home and at night? What?

I did think that was kind of highhanded of Blanca to get Jenny’s job offer rescinded.

Dammit, I typed jefa instead of velvet. Obviously the patio would recognize the cast members' names.

OT

Dondi, you have become a martyr to technology mishaps. My sincere condolences. I believe I mentioned here that I lost my AT&T fiber to the home internet for 3 days and almost lost my mind. Best wishes for getting things humming again.

velvet

I'll put up something, probably a quickie, tonight.

Velvet

Novelera, yup, the names give it away. I could hem T-shirts but it wouldn't be very professional. A serger for knits is preferred. I actually have one of those that I bought used but I decided it was more complicated than I wanted to tackle so it's sitting on a shelf under a cover I made so it doesn't gather dust. I'm 5'3" so I know the feeling of things being too long. I actually would like tshirts to my knees. I'd wear them as dresses! This haute couture show is wasted on me. I want to use my treadle machine but it's currently a table at the main door we enter with a lamp and the keys, wallets, coaster for drink, catch all. It has a shuttle style bobbin and only one or two of them so I know if I actually use it I'd be spending a lot of time winding bobbins.

Back to velvet. I'm assuming Ana is a designer now for the new company and her workshop is tio's apartment. I guess if she needed more space and remained at Velvet she could ask for her own place.

I'm with the bad Blanca team for sabotaging Jenny's new job. Thanks for doing tonight's episode.

Part 1 of 2

We again are treated to Alberto invading Ana’s neighborhood bar in Queens. As the episode begins, he’s holding her hands and doing some more begging. When she doesn’t jump into his arms, he asks if it’s about Rodrigo. Said Rodrigo shows up, trying to get Ana to return to the group. Alberto sucker punches him. The two go at it for a while until some bar employees intervene.

I’m enjoying the friendly relationship between Max and Blanca. When this TN began, I thought Blanca was going to be another Josefina (her role in El Conde). She had a frozen face and seemed to glare at the women working under her.

Alberto is still pleading his case with Ana after the fight. He makes some jealous comments. She hits him where he lives by saying she isn’t using Rodrigo like he’s using Cristina. Then she asks him to leave.

Cristina tells Gerardo how happy she is with Alberto. After she leaves, Gerardo asks Enrique to work at Velvet and keep an eye on Alberto.

Still at the bar in Queens, Pedro tells Rodrigo that Alberto has a wicked left hook.

Jenny and Blanca talk. The young woman, for once, isn’t a brat. She tells Blanca how much she loves her. She just needs to find her own path, to be independent. Blanca accepts this, and they embrace.

Hmmm. Susan surprises me. She wasn’t angling to move in with Pedro to be able to afford the Big Apple. She has tickets and is leaving with Peter to fly…somewhere.

Max again says all the right things to Blanca about Jennifer’s leaving being good for both of them.

Late that night, when Alberto returns home, Gloria confronts him about everything he’s doing having been for “the seamstress”. Her words might work better if half her chest wasn’t hanging out of a black negligee.

Clara, an increasingly unfunny clown, comes home drunk and greets the other tenants. Just then Marga and Clara’s father from Miami appears. Don’t remember his name. He’s seen the social media photos of his wife (can’t remember hers either) with the Chinese restaurant owner. Trying to be helpful, their father almost burns down the kitchen.

Rick intercepts Emilio and begins a spiel that sounds like he has an AI device implanted. He babbles on about fashion and his having worked in department stores.

The next day Valeria notices Alberto’s damage from being punched by Rodrigo. Oddly enough, later on, Cristina does not.

Part 2 of 2

Outside Velvet Rodrigo declares his intentions and kisses Ana. Of course, Alberto manages to see this. But later he tells Mateo that she turned Rodrigo down. But will she always do so?

Alberto springs his big plan on Valeria with almost no notice. He wants her to give a sales pitch to some English high fashion guy who’s coming to possibly invest in Velvet. This plan, of course, is to use the Brit’s money to pay off Gerardo and get Ana back. The pitch goes pretty well. The guy likes what he sees.

This is odd. Rick interviews in Emilio’s office. To me, he’s clearly saying what he stayed up all night memorizing. But when Emilio excuses himself for a moment, Rick calls Margarita with an update. She’s helping him get the job that Pedro wanted?

Later it sounded like the Brit was only going to buy the new line. Telenovela business is clearly as confusing as Telenovela Airlines.

Clara and Margarita argue. Clara is clearly nuts about Mateo. It’s unclear whether they did the deed the night she came in tipsy.

Rick tries to hide from Pedro when Emilio is ready to announce that Rick has gotten the opportunity to take the Velvet training of, IIRC, 15 weeks. But he’ll have to continue to live with Pedro because the apartments are only for employees who’ve passed muster. Pedro comes in as the announcement is made.

Alberto AGAIN approaches Ana while she’s at work. [It still drives me nuts that the high maintenance fashion woman clearly hired Ana after the funeral dress was sold. But she’s not showing up there for work. She’s still on days at Velvet!] But Alberto doesn’t get far. Enrique, smirking for all he’s worth, interrupts and insists he come with him to Alberto’s office.

Pedro, no more Mr. Nice Guy, snarls at Rick about his “fashion knowledge” when what he did in Texas was re-install motors.

Enrique tells his sister that, for Alberto, she’s a business. Then he at least apologizes.

Jenny gets a warm sendoff from the employees at Velvet.

Not watching this one Steve.

Thanks very much, novelera, for your impressive "quickie." It covered everything important and included some terrific commentary.

I too was surprised and pleased with Blanca's seeming transformation from mean boss to warm human being. I think Max may have had an important role in this transformation.

I was also surprised and pleased that Susan apparently isn't going to use Peter as a way to stay with Pedro. I wonder, though, how Pedro feels about Peter's leaving.

Gloria really ticked me off with her "advice" to Alberto to get an apartment for Ana and use her as his mistress on the side. (I think this may not be the first time she has suggested this.)

I loved your description of Rick's spiel to Emilio! You're right, he sounded as if he had memorized some info he'd gotten from AI. I was a little surprised that Emilio didn't hear the phoniness.

Rick didn't call Marga, he called his sister (or at least he referred to her as his sister). Clearly, he and she had been planning and rehearsing in advance. I wonder how long it will take for Rick to be unmasked and how it will happen.

I loved your saying about Enrique's mean but true statement to Cris, "he at least apologized."

Yes, Jen gets a warm sendoff from the Velvet employees--all but one. Valeria speaks softly in Jen's ear so no one else can hear and tells her she didn't expect her to leave, but of course "with my high sales, there's not much there for you." Jen keeps her cool as she replies that she's not at Velvet as a whim capricho, she's not happy with 2nd place, and she doesn't want to stay and watch a sheltered little girl play at being an adult.

Mateo is not pleased that Alberto is still in love with Ana and is making what Mateo regards as poor business decisions because of this. Alberto tells him, "Soon, Cris will be part of my past." That's the way the episode ended, leaving me thinking "Perhaps not so soon, Alberto, or not in the way you think."

Just a couple of small additions to what I said--or didn't say in my comment above. I saw your question mark after saying that Rick called Margarita, and I had intended to mention that you clearly had your doubts, but I didn't mention it. Also, I had intended to put parentheses around "capricho," but somenow forgot--I'll blame the coding for italics, which made it seem like I had put in the parentheses. (Yes, I realize that these are not earthshaking additions, just a sign of my occasional bursts of obsessiveness.)

Velvet

I haven't had the time to watch this one yet. We had a strong thunderstorm roll through last night and it knocked out the cable. It may have resolved itself but my husband suggested it was time for bed so I followed him in. I needed the rest after the previous night's 4 a.m. awakening.

Regarding Juanita's final sentence, I'm thinking Chris will turn up pregnant after the night she and Al shared after the wedding. I just cannot like him so if he is trapped into the marriage I don't care....

velvet

Juanita, thanks for the correction (and the obsessive clarification!) about to whom Rick was speaking. I mostly understand everything that is said, but I use the subtitles as a crutch. I replayed Rick's phone call a couple of times but kept hearing Margarita, and the subtitles were useless then, as they often are. Obsessive, just kidding. But I lean that way myself. My parents were very easygoing and didn't care at all about my grades. But I HAD TO HAVE all A's!

Guess I had an extra surge of caffeine from my morning (or should I say early afternoon since that's when I have it since I retired) but I've been commenting today on both Telemundo and Univision.

This whole plot is boiling up lately, and not in a good way.

We loved seeing Jacinto buried in the hole in the ground he planned for Gloria. But Luisa is just as awful as always. She refused a $1 million offer of surgery from Gloria so as to be able to walk again. Methinks she'll change her tune now that Duque has told her to take it and pretend to be reconciled so as to spy for him

Laura got the "get out of jail free" card from Gloria by way of a bribed judge. Her lawyer mentioned it was a BIG bribe. Lovely to see her back with Miguel and Fercho. And Miguel said he was fine with Fercho moving in. Gloria told Laura she wasn't to do any more work as a mule because it's too risky for a mother.

Violeta got away from the crooked vet, and that guy was tortured by Nacho and gave up the money he dug up. Of course, we knew he wouldn't survive because he'd seen Nacho's face.

Mauricio, the cop we love to hate, sent Gloria a message so that she'd show up and see Mateo meeting with Duque and think she's been betrayed. Viewerville knows that Mateo started out helping Duque but is now madly in love. Gloria promised some kind of deal with Mauricio to bring down Nacho and they shook on it.

Gloria went to see Venancio, the saner narco, and said she'd work for him again. Finding out two things: he lied about stopping sending little kids through the tunnels and Duque was still his right-hand man were bridges too far.

Nacho kissed Gloria in public. She was sensible enough not to slap him. But he sent Débora to buy a huge rock of an engagement ring. He's planning to spring, I think, a public proposal of marriage on her.

Duque (and Nacho) have given Mateo two days to leave Mexico and return to Colombia. Or he's a dead man. Gloria has decided to pretend she still cares about Mateo, I think at Venancio's urging.

Does anyone think any of this is going to work out?

jefa

Gracias, Novelera. It's such a treat to get your rundown of all the goings-on. "Venancio, the saner narco" - incredible that so many characters are dreadful that Venancio seems normal. He's at least calm.

Great, Gloria lets Laura of the hook, no more mule work for her.

Yadi and her novio (can't remember his name now) started out so well as a couple, but now when I see them together, ho-hum.

Luisa is stuck on hate and on stupid. Duque is clear with her that they have no future.

Fingers crossed that Gloria will realize Mateo is true blue before it's too late.

“Velvet”

Pedro’s cousin Rick seems a bit sketch to me. His interview with Emilio was totally rehearsed, then he asked his sister to fudge his references. He also said he got tired of working as a mechanic. Hmm. Am I getting closeted vibes from him?

Rick was hired on a trial basis for 15 days.

Velvet #20

Is anyone doing last night's episode? I can't believe Alberto thought Ana would agree to a secret marriage! He is such a jerk. I can't stand him. Good for Emilio telling him off also. Ana has had to subsist on his crumbs of affection for years, refusing to date anyone else, living for the little bit of time he gave her. You know, Emilio has hit the nail on the head of why I don't like Al. He treats Ana like a toy to be played with when he wants, or when someone else wants(Rodrigo).

Does anyone think that Al's biological mom might be terminally ill and she may have a chance at freedom because of that? It's strange how they only show the back of her head in the scenes.

So we may not get a split coast show, but Miami may be in the works. Jenny says that's where she is headed. Then Marg was all set to flee there with papa to help in his restaurant after she thinks she made a fool of herself by kissing Pedro.

Anonymous, I also thought maybe Rick was gay, but Pedro point blank asked him. He said, no but he has always been fascinated by women's clothing. I looked up the word coser which he said to Pedr thinking maybe he was a transvestite or cross dresser. Coser means sewer.

Novelera: Mauricio needs to go down in Season 2 since this is a Super Series.

Niecie: I doubt Gloria will figure it out!

velvet

Thanks very much, Kat, for getting the discussion started. I share some of your negative feeling about Alberto, though I'm perhaps a bit more forgiving because he's in such a bind regarding Velvet's future. But yes, if she decides to marry Rodrigo, I'd be happy for her.

For some reason, I already knew the word "coser," but your definition made me realize that "sewer" can be pronounced two different ways--the first syllable can be either "so" or "soo," and only the context can make the meaning clear. Of course, the context is clear here, but I nonetheless had a very brief moment when I read it as "soo--er"! :-)

And yes, in the scene with Alberto's biological mother and her lawyer, the lawyer tells her that perhaps her "condition" may be grounds for releasing her.

I may have more to add, but I'll post this now just in case I don't. BTW, I was intrigued by your suggestion in an earlier message that perhaps Cris will wind up pregnant from her one time sex with Alberto. Wow, that would take us in several different directions, including some that Telemundo would probably be unlikely to take.

Velvet
Maggie, I never even dawned on me the other meaning and pronunciation. Since Rick is a guy seamstress wouldn't work, a tailor would be a better definition. To sew or stitch I should have said.

Who knows what direction this show is going. I did get the idea that Rick hated working as a mechanic with his dad so I have a bit of sympathy for him. I guess his fudged resume was probably the places his little sister (hermanita does sound a bit like Margarita novelera, no wonder you had a hard time differentiating) has worked. Does anyone have any idea how many episodes it has. I never know with Telemundo.

OT
My language journey is much less diverse than novelera. I took 3 years of French in high school, then 3 years in college. I decided to throw a quarter of Spanish in during my junior year, took it P/F along with 3rd year French. I got so confused, I was struggling in my calculus class and my mother and grandmother were both literally dieing at that time. I went to the Prof and asked for an incomplete, went home on spring break, grandmother died on a Tuesday, mother 24 hours later, then went back to college and managed to eke out a D in calculus and a pass in Spanish. So besides my 2.5 years recently I did have 10 weeks of Spanish 42 years ago ... When I struggle with a Duolingo lesson I actually do some French lessons. A lot has come back to me from my youth, but I haven't used French at all since college so I'm way worse in that language now.

I was talking to my 93 year old aunt recently. She has some dementia but I do get some snippets of history from her at times. She was my mother's sister. At any rate her mother (the same grandmother that died on my spring break) was Norwegian and apparently spoke the language as my great grandparents came over from Norway. I took care of my grandparents the summer break before she died. I had no idea. A 20 year old doesn't ask those kind of questions. Now I love the family history and I so wish I had asked them things when I had the chance. All to say, so, after I finish the Duolingo Spanish course I may just try my luck with Norwegian....

Velvet

I really have a hard time liking Alberto, although his situation is awful having to give up the love of his life for the family business that employs tons of people. I think the secret wedding proposal was the worst.

People seem poised to move from NY. It would be fun to have a Miami branch.

I like Rodrigo, but I am suspicious about his timing. He showed up just when needed and it was love at first sight? I wonder if he is a plant. But, by whom?

When is Danilo Carrera going to show up? Perhaps Miami?

I like the relationship between Max and Valeria. They might even be siblings. They are interesting as they are both showing positive growth from their experiences.

I am growing fonder of Rick. He is smart and knows what he wants. It’s miserable to be stuck living a life you don’t want. I wonder if he will inspire Pedro to find what he really wants. First, Pedro needs to do a dna test on Peter!

Babachita

velvet

I have just a couple more things to say about Friday's episode. One is that I'm not sure why Marga is so upset about kissing Pedro. She says she has betrayed her sister, but that's nonsense. Clara has made it clear that she is not (or no longer) interested in Pedro. So Marga's apparent guilt at having kissed Pedro makes little sense to me.

I wasn't at all surprised when Luisa learns that Ramon has not signed the divorce agreement. I didn't anticipate that he would also sue her for custody of their son, in part because he doesn't even seem to have a job.

I was surprised that Alberto would leave his office with his laptop computer open and very visible. That of course turns out to be a BIG mistake, since Gerardo comes to see him, thinks nothing of entering Alberto's office when he's not there, and sees that Alberto is getting romantic messages that aren't from Cris. (How he finds that out isn't clear, since all I saw on the computer was that it was addressed to Alberto.)

I guess I was impressed that one reason Ana wouldn't agree to marry Alberto in secret is that she would be hurting another woman, Cris. Ana says that Cris doesn't deserve for her feelings to be played with.
