I put this up on Page 1 and decided to paste it here since it's way after 5PM on Thursday. Thanks, Kat, for the excellent recap. I'm sorry we don't agree about Alberto. He made the, in retrospect, very bad move marrying Cris. But I can't even imagine the fear of losing a third-generation family business. He foolishly thought he'd get Ortegui money short term and Ana would understand. It all blew up in his face. At the time he made this decision, I thought he and Ana would NOT end up together. But I've liked him as the galán.

So we're with the same old, same old of the Other Woman insisting that the galán will fall in love with them if they just: 1. Get pregnant; 2. Do something awful to the female protagonist; and 3. In this case, get Daddy to buy the guy.

Another mark against the really despicable Enrique is the way he talks about his sister. Valeria already called him a narcissist once. I hope his rage at her backing Alberto for the presidency will keep them apart, even if just for a while.

If this were our job here at Caray, we could have an office pool of guesses how long it will take Cris to find out about Ana and Alberto. My money is on this week.

velvet

I will do a recap of tonight's episode.

asking for a friend…. does anyone know at least a snippet of what’s lies ahead of the episodes lol. This novela has taken over my life 😭 im obsessed. Currently we’re on 59

^ speaking of velvet btw !!

Bahar

Great episode! Well, Bahar has gotten her proof. The actress is terrific.

Which one of you noticed the bottle-burying scene looked like it was at Timur’s house? Sure enough! Evren looked stunned at the sight of it. (Has Evren never been invited to anything there, a cocktail party perhaps? I mean, they’re colleagues even if they don’t like each other.) I’m trying to figure out … so the elder Aziz was going to leave our present suegra for the other woman and she fell down the stairs? Not pushed? Are the two boys Timur and Evren?

Now Rengin has told Parla she will leave Timur. I wonder how much she meant that. And there’s the dad from the US! He seems like a nice guy. I wonder if they were married.

I think suegra Nevra is about to be hosed by her handsome boyfriend the real estate guy.

Oh, and this glorification of graffiti bothers me. Decades ago I lived in Germany. Europe was so beautiful everywhere you looked! A friend took a trip there some years back and showed me photos. It broke my heart – graffiti everywhere, on the wonderful old buildings.

#58 – Part 1 of 3

First, we get a repeat of Cristina swallowing the rest of the pills, after first having spit one out in defiance of Barbie’s advice. While some of Viewerville may have had their fingers crossed, our hopes were dashed. Barbie rushed in pretty quickly.

Valeria called Gloria at the forced sobriety place. Gloria gets in one more jab about Valeria now having no one since what she did to her mother and hangs up.

Barbie has some nurse at her beck and call, a guy I’m surprised to learn is a friend of hers. Why? Because he has principles. He’s kind of fixed Cris. I hope it was a home stomach pump.

Emilio and Blanca are having dinner at the apartment in Queens. Blanca tells Emilio she thinks Esteban has changed. When she goes on to say he’s Alberto’s uncle after all, Emilio responds that Pilar is also related, and she’s a predator. He explains that Pilar’s company is fast fashion. She buys up companies, ends up with their money, and leaves the employees high and dry. He finishes up by saying he pities Alberto, surrounded by an aunt and an uncle, both dangerous.

These tíos are conspiring over drinks. She says she will be able to provide very good fabrics for Alberto and at a quite good price. She tells her brother that she wants Velvet. To Esteban’s credit, he squirms a bit. She says that Alberto won’t be able to survive the great economic loss she plans for Esteban to cause.

Alberto tells Valeria that Cris knew all along that her father gave him the money to save Velvet in exchange for marrying her. She looks quite surprised. He goes on to tell her that being in a marriage without love is like living in hell.

Alberto also tells Mateo he can’t believe he spent so long feeling bad about deceiving Cristina when she knew all along he’d been purchased for her. He also says Cris doesn’t know about Ana. And that Gerardo doesn’t know about the divorce or he’d be pounding on the door asking for his money back. Mateo wisely remarks that this feels like the calm before the storm.

Barbie tells Cris that what she needs is some distance. Cris responds that she won’t leave the way clear for the zorra. Barbie knows just what to say. Cris won’t be able to hide the state she’s in from her father. He might lock her away again. Cris agrees to go but says she must go to Velvet first.

Barbie approaches Pepita, pretending to need her help with a dress. Bottom line: she bribes Pepita to watch Alberto, looking for the other woman, although she doesn’t quite say this. So, Pepita’s reform didn’t last long.

Cris shows up, handing Alberto the divorce papers. His eyes show hope, but then he sees they aren’t signed. She says that she’ll sign later, being vague about when. He should thank her for not telling Gerardo and thus avoiding una batalla campal (pitched battle, battle royale). She laughs bitterly when he says he doesn’t want either of them hurt, saying that he destroyed her life.

#58 – Part 2 of 3

Blanca talks with Sofi and challenges her to learn to sew.

Emilio is worried. He pigeonholes Alberto to tell him about Cris having grilled him about a woman involved with Alberto. Still living in an alternative reality, Al tells Emilion that he’ll protect Ana, and that Cris will sign the divorce papers when she returns.

Raul has heard what’s going on and tells Ana he’s very upset with Alberto for deceiving Cris.

Marga and Ana talk about what Raul said. They’re in the room where the sewing takes place, and I’m yelling at them to shut up because I see Pepita in the background.

The fawning nurse brings Gloria her breakfast. After a few niceties about the nurse being a candidate for a modeling career, Gloria bashes her with the breakfast tray shortly after palming her badge. I’m groaning at the havoc to come. We see her evil accomplice, Alessandro, waiting outside with a car as Gloria rushes out. But, whew, two muscular attendants grab her up.

Carlos and Barbie are together. He’s arranged a private jet to take them to Switzerland. [Carlos is an employee, not the owner of Sahgún. How does he have money to buy the red dress and pay for private jets?] He and Barbie chat about how he and Cris had one date, and both realized they’d just be friends. Big Surprise (not), Carlos tells Barbie that Cris shouldn’t rush to sign the papers and should fight for her marriage. When Barbie asks about he and Ana, he says they’re better than ever. She’s the love of his life.

Ana and Alberto are kissing at work again. Looks like Pepita will have an easy job earning Barbie’s money. Just then Carlos texts Ana, asking to meet. Of course, she agrees, and Al is not happy.

Carlos shows Ana some images of a storefront not far from Velvet that he says is her own boutique. She says that’s crazy; she can’t afford that. He says not to worry. He’ll take care of it. [Kind of like “Don’t worry your pretty little head." No, he didn’t say that exactly.] Ana, of course, says she can’t accept.

Carlos arrives at, I think, his place of work and is accosted by the mother of Kathy Méndez. “Where have you hidden her?” Security grabs her up. Carlos goes to his desk and then snarls at the woman who says that Señor Sahgún wants to see Carlos in his office.

Looking BSC, he vocalizes that he had nothing to do with the disappearance of Kathy Méndez. Then we are shown an awful flashback.

velvet

#58 – Part 3 of 3

He’s shown slapping Kathy, who has blood all over her face. She begs him to stop, saying she’ll stay with him. Looking crazy while sort of crying, he asks why she wanted to leave him. He gave her everything. Then, looking saner, he asks if she told anyone they were together. Eyes wide, she shakes her head no. Then he asks if she told anyone she was coming to see him. More shaking of the head no. He babies something about wanting to forgive her. Then he reminds her he said that only death would part them. And he strangled her with his bare hands.

After a commercial break for us to recover a bit, Carlos’ boss, Fernando Sahgún comes to Carlos’ office, not happy he hadn’t come to the boss’s office when asked. He’s also not happy about Kathy Méndez’s mother showing up. He says that Sara told him about Carlos having “something” with Kathy. Fernando grills him good, saying his relationship was hidden from HR. He orders Carlos to join Sara in Panama.

Ana tells Marga about the offer to have her own store. Marga says he’s not to be trusted. Ana replies that she’s come to that conclusion as well. She’s going to return the red dress he bought for her at the Velvet auction.

We get another scene of comic relief or serious annoyance, depending on your point of view. Clara is seemingly getting facts about an apartment for Mateo to move into when his mother shows up. Clara tells her in no uncertain terms what’s happening, and his mother comes unglued. Mateo is annoyed with Clara.

Ana tells Albert about Carlos’s offer. He says that the guy is obsessed. [Ya think?] Ana isn’t sure, but she says she’s staying far away from him. They start up with the office kissing again, tempting fate.

Barbie and Cris get in an elevator on their way out of town.

ONE MONTH LATRE

Hmm. Raul is showing Esteban the new line: Oaxaca in New York. They look to me like tie-died muu-muus, but what do I know? I’m often seen in my Birkenstocks and San Francisco Valkyries t-shirt.

Clara hands Mateo his apartment key, delivering a little lecture about most people moving out when they’re 18. He STILL HASN’T told them he’s moving!

Sofi likes sewing. And she invites Blanca to her 21st birthday celebration.

In a month’s time Barbie went from nada to what looks like 7 months along. She and Cris have come to visit Velvet. Alberto comes down a flight of stairs and comes to greet Cris. She looks at him like she’s trying to decide if he’d taste better barbecued or roasted.

velvet

LATRE? Yikes!

Velvet

Thanks novelera. Carlos murdering Kathy was pretty gruesome. Hopefully if and when they find her body there are some DNA samples under her fingernails. I imagine dumping people out to sea if they have a boat or plane is the preferred disposal route though. All I can picture is him hacking her into small pieces and taking her out little by little to avoid discovery. Or he has a deep freeze in his place and she's still there, an even more gruesome idea.

Barbie sure did pop in a month!

One month of sewing experience and she is now an expert. Ok! Good for her wanting to learn though.
Yeah, those mumus were pretty hideous. I was expecting pretty embroidered dresses, not printed fabric of some countryside landscape.

Bahar

This show is now the highlight of my nightly viewing.

I think Rengin is married to Can, Parla's "dad". Wonder if he knows the truth and that it's just been a marriage of convenience to protect her good name. I imagine things are way different for unmarried women in that culture, reminiscent of pre '80s US days.

So Selma was Evren's sister. I guess his parents were dead and she was raising him. I was a bit confused by the scene where Asiz was operating on her or something. Was that in a hospital or the house? Whoever said Nevra dropped him off at the orphanage had it right. Looks like Evren and Timur were good friends, though he had a different name then. I wonder if Selma was the housekeeper and the two boys spent a lot of time together. Wonder if Evren will dig up his jar.

And the death stairs strike again in a telenovela.

Ah yes, graffiti. It is fine on ugly cement walls or metal garage doors, abandoned railway cars, etc. but so bad for old brick buildings. Paint destroys brick!

velvet

Thanks so much, novelera, for this terrific, delightful recap! I especially
loved the humor, such as "I hope it was a home stomach pump." Yes, I know, you weren't really kidding.

Emilio is apparently well aware of Pilar's untrustworthyness, but why doesn't he warn Alberto, especially about her shoddy fabrics? (As I understand it, Pilar will provide Esteban with very good fabrics to show Alberto, but then will provide inferior fabrics for Velvet's new designs.)

I think Mateo's remark about the calm before the storm was the most accurate and important statement in the entire episode.

Yes, Pepita ultimately agrees to do what Barbie wants, but her first impulse is an honorable one. She tells Barbie "I don't think it's right to spy on Alfredo." Receiving the envelope Barbie slips into Pepita's pocket containing more than a year's salary ultimately makes Pepita change her mind, but I'll still give her credit for her initial remark. More than a year's salary is an understandable inducement.

I was surprised that Raúl is such a fan of Christina. His saying to Ana (of all
people) "How could Alberto not love Cristina?" made me wince.

Wow, Barbie finally looks pregnant. I'm really not sure what I want to happen
re her pregnancy. I'd pity a child with Barbie and Enrique for parents.

I'm not sure how to interpret Alberto's response to Cristina's "Alberto, Aren't
you glad to see me?" when she turns up after a month away with Barbie. Alberto responds, "Sí, cómo no." According to WordReference.com, that statement can be translated lots of different ways, some positive, others ironic or negative. The uncertainty seems about right as the note on which the episode ends.

Bahar

Kat – you pick up all kinds of things I don’t. Selma Evren’s older sister? Maybe the housekeeper?

I’m wondering why Evren would get another name. Also, I hadn’t seen any hint that he and Tibur knew each other since childhood, though maybe it’s not something they bring up. I’m wondering why Evren looked so shocked when he saw the house. Maybe he knew they lived there, but just hadn’t seen it in so long, so it was emotional. The little boys looked old enough that he could remember a house.

Bahar and OT

The mystery keeps unfolding!

Selma might have worked for Aziz and Nevra as a housekeeper. I wouldn’t put it past Nevra to “help” Selma fall. I also wonder if Timur knows who Evren is now. I think not, but Nevra might.

He just might dig up that jar!

The graffiti thing is also in some of the Mexican tn’s, Vencer el Miedo, for example. I have a split opinion. I admire the urge to create but I also have a limit to my desire to see it everywhere, especially if it covers other art such as architecture. I think the scene with the girls, Bahar and Evren looked like a lot of fun, though. I might have joined them!!! It can make old, abandoned places look brighter. In Houston and San Antonio there are murals on walls that I enjoy, but they are a bit more mainstream than graffiti. In Amor Eterno, a Turkish dizi, one of the meeting places for the young lovers was at a graffiti-covered wall. It’s definitely part of our world these days.

IIRC, Evren only came to Timur’s hospital recently, so he may not have had occasion to see the house. He was definitely affected by seeing it.

I only recognized Nevra at the orphanage by accident. I was working on something in an adjacent room and just listening to the Spanish when I heard that distinctive voice! I ran to the tv and rewound it, but the women were too out of focus to recognize! I’m not sure I would have made the connection if I’d been watching as visual and captions are primary for me when available and audio is secondary. But, that VOICE pulled me in from another room!

Bahar

Somehow the first ten minutes was missing when I started watching tonight so I missed Bahar getting a bloody nose and ending up in a private hospital bed. I can't believe a Dr would forget to take the required medicine. My Sister in law received a new liver two years ago. She takes her medicine religiously, has an alarm on her phone to remind her so it is taken at the correct time also. So first I miss the first ten minutes, then the CC's are gibberish so I had a harder time following the show. I thought it was funny when Bahar wanted to get up she asked for her sandals. Her yellow Crocs have caught my eye every episode. Crocs are my footwear of choice.

Sure enough Nevra is doing bad things. At least her suiter asked about using the house that belonged to her daughter in law as collateral. Does that make him a guy with a conscience. Of course we are just speculating he is bad.

The final scene I thought maybe Bahar was showing up, but it was Umay. Did Parla tell her to meet her there when she was sending texts. Everyone knows now, except perhaps Nevra.

I wish my captions worked during the tarot card reading. I'll have to rewatch over the weekend and see if the issue resolved. Wow, I was mad at Evren calling Cagla about Bahar, thinking he was breaking HIPPA laws. But it was about something else, which I've already forgotten. Was it Timur related? Did you see how short her skirt was! I guess when you are a cosmetic doctor you show off your attributes to inspire others.

I usually wait until the next day to comment but I have hopes Maggie or babachita will fill in the missing ten minutes for me.

Bahar

What a great viewing night. A.Mar is always entertaining, then Karsu was terrific and after that Bahar was terrific too. Jackpot!

I just love the writing and the complex characters. There was Timur saying he couldn’t live without Bahar, or without Rengin too. Will he fall apart if one leaves him? It sure could happen that both do.

How sad that Aziz Uras saw Timur and Rengin embracing. His grief was touching. And now Bahar’s health is delicate so he can’t tell Bahar what he saw. She’s in medicine and should know to take her meds, for heaven’s sake! I feel for Rengin, I feel for Parla, I feel for the US husband. And at the end, for Umay.

And oh no, it looks like suegra Nevra has taken out a loan against the house. How can she if she doesn’t own it?

Bahar

Kat – oh look, you’ve already posted! I didn’t check before posting.

I’m trying to think about the first 10 minutes. Bahar tells Timur she won’t accept his apology. Then she gets a bloody nose. Umay has seen Rengin and Timur in an embrace, and he walks out of the hospital followed by Timur. He’s very upset, and I believe he said he was going to tell his ma. Later, maybe after the 10 minutes, I don’t know, he goes into Bahar’s hospital room in tears, and she thinks it’s because of her kidney problem. Now he can’t tell because her health is shaky.

Also Kat – When suegra Nevra came on I listened to her voice and didn’t notice anything particular about it. I wondered how you recognized it without even looking at the screen. Well, I do have poor hearing but I think it’s that you’re much more observant.

velvet

Sorry, I fell behind this week. I'll have a recap up later today.

Bahar
Kat, Maggie, Babachita thanks for commenting as I keep dozing off!
Kat, about the fortune teller, IIRC, Evren did tell Cagla that Bahar’s condition was deteriorating. Cagla was alarmed that she had already made the appointment with him.
At the reading, he first told Cagla that an older man was in her future. She wasn’t too thrilled.
As for Bahar, she was to select 12 cards and Cagla urged her to focus. Bahar asked if her husband was unfaithful. The fortune teller said she had an admirer with nice eyes! Nothing about Timur or her health as I remember.

Bahar

Maggie, It was I who heard Nevra’s (dubbed) voice. I don’t know why, but it sounds distinctive to me. It is a low and grating, rough sound, which fits her! To me it stands out. But I would probably recognize Bahar’s dubbed voice from another room too. It might also have had to do with the context, that the women were leaving the boy. It seemed an odd time to hear Nevra’s voice.

velvet #59 part 1

So, Cris and Barbie are back from the Swiss Alps resort without warning. It’s also the day of the Oaxaca in NY desfile. Albert comes downstairs. There’s tense, snarky talk. Albert brings up the divorce. Cris wants to discuss it after the desfile. She adds that her family knows nothing about the divorce yet.

Barbie surprises Enrique. More tense and snarky talk. [Note: no hug, no kiss.] Yes, they’re back. Cris wouldn’t miss the desfile, after all, it’s a tribute to her beloved MIL. And Barbie was bored in Switzerland, with all that chocolate, cheese and old people. She missed the NY traffic, trash, and crazy people. Enrique asks if Cris mentioned anything about a special board meeting Gerardo called. Barbie doesn’t answer.

I don’t know why they still have that fangirl Marina attending Gloria. She brings Glo a meal and Glo is her usual rude self. But Marina is wiser this time. She reminds Glo of her attempted escape and turns on the TV. Glo didn’t ask for that. Marina smirks and tells her that Velvet is broadcasting a show today and rubs it in—it’s too bad you cant be there. [I guess the patients don’t have control of the TV.]

Barbie checks in with Pepita. Pepita claims she’s done her due diligence but has nothing notable to report. Barbie is skeptical. Pepita says that Albert is always the first to arrive and the last to leave. He’s in meetings at the atelier all day with Raul, Enrique and Mateo. She doesn’t know where he goes after he leaves.

Barbie thinks she might be wasting her money, but she tells Pepita to continue investigating. She’ll pay Pepita double if she finds anything. Pepita adds one more thing, there’s a woman that Mr. Albert keeps very close… Clara. If he has a lover, she would know. [Seems Pepita is playing a game with Barbie… good.]

Speaking of Clara, she happily rushes into the atelier to bring Crimson 76 to Ana. Ana isn’t happy, she returned it to Carlos. Clara reads the card that came with it. “This dress is yours, Ana, and it will always be. Hope all is well. Hugs and kisses, Carlos.” Ana says she’s returning the dress to Velvet. Clara objects. Carlos paid a fortune for Ana to have it and deserves to keep it. Clara has to hurry off because there’s a board meeting. She’ll keep Ana informed.

Enrique sees Valeria and asks her if she’s going somewhere. Yes, she’s going to visit her mother. He asks if something happened. She tells him about the escape attempt. Enrique warns her to be careful. Maybe Glo needs a longer stay. She could relapse as soon as she comes home. Val gets a notification, Gerardo has arrived for the meeting.

Board room. The participants assemble. Cris and Barbie walk in. Cris hands out folders. Gerardo says it will be a short meeting. Gerardo has been crunching numbers, and he’s pleased that Velvet is beginning to show signs of recovery—increased sales, new customers. It would be a mistake not to capitalize on this. He suggests launching a new product.

Cris jumps in—it’s fine jewelry with the Velvet label. It’s in the files I gave you. You will see different proposals with sales plans. Val asks, who will lead this project? Barbie pipes up, Cristina and I, of course. Gerardo adds, it was their idea, so they’d be in charge. Cris looks at Albert and smirks, it enables us to become part of the Velvet family.

Esteban is with Pilar. She’s got something terrible planned, and Esteban is horrified. Pilar says it’s happening in a few hours. Esteban asks her not to do this, tonight is the launch at Velvet. Yes, and that’s why Pilar is doing this now. [I don’t know why Esteban is so surprised, doesn’t he know his sister?]

velvet #59 part 2

Pilar says she owes her thanks to Esteban. He starts begging her not to go through with it. It will destroy Velvet. This makes Pilar happy, and she writes out a big fat check so he can continue to live like a millionaire in a Central Park apartment and keep dating that seamstress. He takes the check. Pilar asks to meet Sofia. He says no way. Pilar demands, she’s my niece and shouldn’t be anyone’s assistant. Esteban warns, Sofia knows nothing of this deal, and she can’t find out.

Albert wants time to analyze this proposal. He thinks it’s risky. Gerardo says he’s done all the research and wants to put it to a vote. Cris wants Val to work with them on the project. Gerardo and Val vote in favor. Enrique looks pissed. Somehow that’s enough votes to accept the proposal without anyone else voting. Whatever.

Cris calls Raul with the good news. He thinks it’s fabulous. Raul shares the jewelry news with Ana. It means Cris and Barbie will be there every day. Ana pretends to be happy.

Barbie comes to see Clara. She asks for office space for herself and Cris. She drops the news about the jewelry project on Clara along with a couple of insults. Clara laughs and Barbie’s snootiness kicks into a higher gear. *Snap, snap*… I need that office yesterday, so hurry up!

Divorce lawyer Leo is at the high-class lounge awaiting someone. Barbie shows up. She gave a false name to set up the meeting. You’re Alberto Marquez’s divorce lawyer, right? Leo says he can’t discuss that. Maybe not with me, Barbie replies, but you can with my friend. Cris appears and says, what I have to say will be of great interest to you.

Cris asks, do you know who we are? He knows. Cris follows up, are you aware of the influence our last names carry in this city? He knows. Cris continues, if you know, you must also know that we could complain to all our friends and family about your law firm and the service it provides. You’d lose important clients.

Leo is amused. Do you seriously think this is the first time some rich girls try to scare me into not doing my job? Let me explain something. What you’re attempting to do is a crime. You could get into serious trouble that you’d want not part of. Believe me. [But I’d love to see it.] He offers advice. Let your daddies handle these kinds of things.

Cris chuckles, my daddy could pay double, triple, or quadruple what my husband is paying. Leo replies, if you’d like to speak with me again, I recommend you do it through Mr. Marquez. He leaves. Big fail for Cris and Barbie. Barbie says, relax, this might not have worked but we’ve got more cards up our sleeves.

Albert meets Ana on the terrace. He tells her he tried to oppose the jewelry project but didn’t have the votes. He wasn’t expecting a proposal like this. They’re not happy Cris will be around all the time. [she practically was before anyway.] Albert says he’s supposed to discuss the divorce with Cris after the show.

Ana feels that Cris won’t want the divorce. Albert insists that it will happen. Ana asks, what if she refuses to sign? He replies, then it will be in the lawyer’s hands. Cris can’t force me to remain married to her. She will have to accept. Ana is scared. [rightfully so.] Albert asks her to trust him, it will work out.

Cris accosts Val as she arrives home. Can you stop avoiding me? Val answers, don’t take it personally, but I have a lot to do before returning to Velvet. Cris brings up the divorce and notes that her marriage was only a transaction for Los Marquez. Val says she respects Albert… and Cris, too. That’s why she’s not interested in the details of their relationship.

velvet #59 part 3

Cris laughs. You talk about respect? You slept with a married man, who happens to be my brother. Val says she won’t take the bait and adds, I thought after I gave you my vote, you’d leave me alone. Cris says, I appreciate the vote, but Barbie is like a sister to me. Stay away from Enrique if you don’t want a problem with me. Val replies, and I remind you that Alberto is my brother, and I’ll do whatever it takes to protect him from whomever.

Enrique smooches Barbie and when he’s got her where he wants her, he tries to extract information on the status of Cris and Albert’s marriage. Passion extinguished, Barbie states that Cris and Albert are fine. She excuses herself, she must get ready for the event.

Rick gives Sofi an early birthday present, a necklace. She’s thrilled. He puts it on her and asks her to be his girlfriend. She readily accepts. They kiss and are caught by Esteban. What the hell is going on? Rick tries to step in, but he’s shut down. Sofi says that Rick is a Velvet salesman and her boyfriend. Rick proclaims his love for Sofi. He has the best intentions… Esteban interrupts—please give me and my daughter some privacy.

No way is Esteban is accepting this relationship. Sofi says she’s not asking for permission. Esteban replies, have you forgotten the problems we had in London? [tired of hearing “what happened in London”.] You are not allowed to date, much less with a salesman who is looking to take advantage of you. Spare me the righteous act, Sofi snaps back, you also have something going on with a Velvet employee. And it’s been going on for years. [she should know about her half bro.] She warns, stay out of my private life. She walks away.

Sofia is walking down the street and suddenly Pilar appears behind her. She calls out to Sofi, you shouldn’t be crying on the street. Never let others know your true feelings. Sofi asks, are you talking to me? Yes, Pilar replies, I am your aunt, Pilar Marquez. It’s a shame we’re face to face and you don’t know me. She holds out her hand to shake. Sofi is stunned but she takes it.

Pilar continues, I met you in London many years ago. You were with your mother then. A cute baby and look at you now. A grown woman and very pretty. I’m very sorry about your mother’s death. Sofi barely squeaks out a thanks before Pilar starts talking again. We’re family, Sofia, and I’d like to get to know you better. I know you’re working at Velvet, but your cousin Alberto isn’t the only one who runs a fashion company. I do too, but mine is international—Pima Fashion.

Pilar hands Sofi her business card. You can look it up, but it would be better if you visited. I could find a spot for you in my company, and not as an intern. Let’s keep in touch and remember, a Marquez never cries in public. We are not ordinary people.

Raul, Ana, and Blanca rush into Albert’s office. Raul exclaims—we’ve been robbed! My collection has been robbed! Raul shows his phone. Mateo picks it up—what is this? It’s Raul’s collection. It’s plagiarism! Ana notes, the entire collection was uploaded to Pima Fashion and it’s already on sale.

Esteban wants a word with Rick. What do you want with my daughter? It’s what I told you, Mr. Esteban, Rick replies, I’m serious about her. Esteban asks, how long has this been going on? Rick says since she’s been in NY. Esteban explains, Sofia is my daughter, I love her. But she’s not ready for a stable relationship. I had serious problems with her in London. She’s dishonest, impulsive, and unbalanced. Rick interrupts—I know you’re her father, but with all due respect, you shouldn’t talk about her like that when she isn’t around. [But it’s okay if she’s around?]

velvet #59 part 4

Mateo notes that the Pima models are exactly the same as Velvet’s. It’s corporate theft in every sense. We must report it. Blanca adds, we also must find the person who gave the information about the collection to Pilar. Raul asks, who’s Pilar? Albert replies, my aunt. She owns Pima. Mateo says, if we launch the collection tonight, everyone will think we are the thieves. What will we do?

Esteban asks Rick, did Sofia tell you how old she is? Yes, Rick replies, I saw her ID. Esteban asks, and how old will she be tomorrow? Rick says 23. Esteban tells Rick the truth about Sofi’s age and adds her ID is fake… and that’s a serious crime. [A serious crime? Maybe trouble for the bar that served her.]

Esteban continues, in London she had drug and alcohol problems. She’d party for days and not be heard from. Did she tell you about Thomas? Her boyfriend of 4 years with whom she ran away with and was supposed to marry? Sofia is using you. Her relationship with Thomas was toxic. That’s why I brought her here. They never broke up. Sofia isn’t being honest with you. You’re a plaything to her. She’ll get rid of you. Now that you know, I’m asking you to stay away. Rick is taking this all in.

Cris is ready to celebrate the triumphant entry into Velvet with Barbie. Enrique appears and tells the harpies that the collection was stolen. Cris looks it up on her phone. Enrique tells them it’s being offered with low quality fabric at 1/5 of Velvet’s pricing. Pilar Marquez stole the designs. Enrique says Gerardo is on his way over.

Rick questions Sofi. Why did your father tell me you’re turning 21 tomorrow? Don’t let my father come between us, Sofi replies. Rick wants to see her ID. She doesn’t have it and thinks it’s no big deal. She will be 21 tomorrow. He asks, have you ever abused drugs or alcohol? Sofi fires back, stop it. I don’t need you to treat me like my father. I get enough at home. Rick asks about that guy in London, Thomas. Who is he? Sofi claims they broke up. Rick presses, how long ago? Sofi says it’s all complicated. Complicated? You lied to me, Rick replies, you’ve been lying to me all this time. Give it a rest, Sofi snaps, if you’re going to believe my father, maybe we should end things. She rips the necklace off—it’s over. She leaves.

Sadness in the atelier. Sofi walks in. What happened? Ana informs her about the collection. Esteban looks mighty guilty. Raul laments that his hard work is being turned into cheap fast fashion. Sofi asks, who stole the collection? Marga answers, Pima Fashion. Sofi recognizes it’s Pilar’s company. We get another look at guilty Esteban.

Albert marches into Pilar’s office with a folder. She gleefully greets him. Ah, sobrino… you must be here to congratulate me on my newest release. Albert wastes no time—you stole the collection we were launching tonight! You’ll have to answer for that. Pilar admits nothing. Albert shows her the collection of Raul’s sketches.

Pilar is “shocked”. How did you get our Oaxaca in NY by Pima Fashion designs? She asks, are you spying on me? It’s a serious crime. Stop the games, Albert replies, you plagiarized our collection. Who helped you? Pilar asks if he has proof. Albert says the drawings he has are proof. How could you do this? You’re ruining the family business.

Family business? Pilar smiles, it’s strange you call it that because I am a part of your family, too, yet I form no part of the company. Your father made sure of that when he got me out of Velvet. Albert clarifies that it was grandpa that did it and not his father.

velvet #59 part 5

Pilar reminds Albert, I offered to partner with you, and you refused. Is this revenge, he asks. Congratulations, Pilar. Pilar advises, if you have any complaints, take the legal route. Sue me. But your lawyer better be good. Mine will tear you to pieces. She hisses, that collection is mine.

Sofi asks Val, why does everyone think Pilar stole the collection? Val answers, because she always wanted to be a part of Velvet, but her father never let her. Sofi wonders why. Val says gramps and Pilar never got along. She was rebellious and wouldn’t listen. She didn’t want to get married either. Grandpa was sexist. Sofi wonders if that was enough to totally pull them apart.

Val says it was the fights… and Pilar eventually married someone the family approved of, but despite that they never got along. Everything got worse when Pilar got divorced shortly after the wedding. Val says there were rumors that Pilar liked the ladies.

Sofi thinks that shouldn’t be an issue. Val says it was back then. She adds, when grandpa died, Pilar and your dad didn’t inherit anything from Velvet. They had some stock, but they were left out of the company. That damaged the sibling relationship further. Then your father went to London and Pilar continued working in fashion. She always wanted to be a partner in Velvet, but it never happened. And that’s despite Pilar being an aggressive executive. She works in fast fashion. Results matter to her. [so the ends justify the means.]

Blanca tells Esteban she can’t believe what’s happened with the collection, it’s never happened before. Esteban blames it all on Pilar. Blanca agrees. Pilar hates the company. Not the company, he replies, it’s what our father did to her. She never got over being forced out. Blanca admits that wasn’t fair, she notes the same thing happened to Esteban, but he’s forgetting the past and helping Albert. Yet another guilty look from Esteban again.

Blanca is sorry but she thinks Pilar is not a good person. She’s jeopardized the work of many others. Esteban says that Pilar is a cold person. She doesn’t care about that. That was another reason his father wouldn’t give her any control over Velvet. He always defended his employees. Blanca asks him about his relationship with Pilar. He lies and says they haven’t spoken in years. She hugs the guilty SOB.

Meeting in the conference room. Albert tells Raul that they are opening an investigation to determine what happened so they can act against Pilar. They will have to cancel the desfile. It’s too risky to launch the collection under these circumstances. Raul calls Pilar garbage and a criminal. Albert assures Raul that Pilar will pay, but that takes time. Enrique notes that they spent a fortune on the collection. Val asks, what will we tell the press and guests? We’ll say it’s a problem at the factory and had to postpone, Albert replies, it will buy us more time.

Emilio gives orders to put everything away because of the cancellation. Blanca says that the main warehouse is packed with dresses and the racks are already full of them. It’s a tragedy. He tells Blanca this was executed by Pilar. She wanted to hurt the company. She played it very well. What’s worse is that somebody from here gave her Raul’s designs. [think, Blanca, think.]

Esteban wanders into the atelier. We get the flashback. Esteban sneaks into Raul’s office after hours and snaps photos of the collection. End flash. A devastated Raul enters the atelier and walks past Esteban. He gives a heavy sigh and walks into his office. He closes the door and breaks down.

velvet #59 part 6

Clara brings Barbie into the only office space available. It was being used as storage. Barbie calls it disgusting. [which is a fitting description for Cris and Barbie.] She orders every corner cleaned and then she and Cris can give it their own touch.

Barbie asks Clara to speak to HR about getting an assistant. But she doesn’t want a woman, she wants a man. She digs at Clara, we all know that a woman working as an assistant is actually looking for something else from the executives. Clara asks, do you want someone like me, good with finance? No, Barbie replies, I want someone who really knows finance and doesn’t just dye their hair. Clara digs back, I don’t dye my hair.

Sofi enters the room where Mateo and Val are talking. Why did you get quiet, Sofi asks, what happened? Val asks, do you know if your father has been in contact with Pilar? Sofi replies, not as far as I know. Mateo asks, have you met Pilar? Sofi remembers and lies, no, we’ve never met in person. She asks, you’re not thinking my father is behind what happened with the collection, are you? Val says they are investigating.

Sofi is adamant. Neither my father nor I had anything to do with that theft. I thought you trusted me, but I see you don’t. I wouldn’t give Pilar that information. Val asks, are you sure? Listen cousin, Sofi replies, if you don’t want me here anymore, just say so. Zero drama. I’d leave Velvet and it would be fine. Excuse me. Val and Mateo look at each other.

Albert is on the phone doing cancelations and damage control. Emilio comes in to tell him everything was put away. But there’s something he wants to say. This is very strange, this is the first time Velvet has suffered theft of this magnitude. Albert asks, are you thinking what I’m thinking? Who could have leaked the information? Emilio thinks there’s no other explanation. Only someone from Velvet could have given Pilar the designs. Albert asks, do you have a suspect?

Emilio says he’d put his hand in the fire for everyone in the atelier, but there’s one new person who has full access to the entire company. Albert says, yes, my Tio Esteban.

And we are out.

OMG, another magnificent recap! Thanks VERY VERY VERY much, dondi. I loved every bit of it, including, of course, your terrific asides.

This episode was painful, not just for the Velvet employees, but also for
me. One thing I don't understand is why Esteban is so shocked. IIRC, Pilar
said in Esteban's presence in an earlier episode that with Esteban's help
she was going to destroy Velvet, or something to that effect. Does he hear
only what he wants to hear?

I too was surprised/confused by the vote by the Velvet board that approved Cris and Barbie's plan for a line of Velvet jewelry. How could the few people who voted (Gerardo and Val) have so much weight that there's no need
to record those opposed?

I was surprised and pleased that Alberto's lawyer wasn't intimidated by Cris
and Barbie. Since it's almost certain that Cris won't sign the divorce
papers, I'm glad to see that Alberto has a formidable lawyer. And, in Val's
interchange with Cris, Alberto apparently also has a strong and loyal
sister. (Though she can be mercurial.)

Oy. Every time Alberto tells Ana "Trust me. It will all work out," I want to
scream. His track record doesn't support such statements.

Hmmm...both Esteban and Sofia lie about having spoken to Pilar. I
wonder whether one of them will ultimately turn and help to do Pilar in. And
if so, which one? (Or maybe both of them? One can hope.)

Thank you, dondi, for confirming that what we saw of Esteban with his camera was indeed a flashback. I assumed it was, but I wasn't completely sure.)

Wow, at least the episode ended on a somewhat positive note, with both
Alberto and, apparently, Emilio, having identified the likely culprit who
gave Pilar Velvet's designs. We're nowhere near últimas semanas, so lots of bad stuff is almost certainly going to occur, but it was nice to have a happy weekend.

Velvet OT

Sorry for the excessively long lines. I haven't figured out how to edit without weird formatting occurring.

Just a fantastic recap, dondi! And, as always, if you could see my face, you'd see me emphatically nodding yes with all your asides.

I was glad to see the "fangirl" is over Gloria. At first, she didn't even give her a utensil but ultimately coughed up a plastic spoon. And, what? Are high fashion runway shows on TV now?

Clara, as is so often the case, doesn't show good judgment. Giving the red gown back to Velvet is the perfect move. There's not much Carlos could do about that and it's not an obvious slap in the face.

Cris really does live in a rich brat alternative reality. She and Barbie schemed even before the divorce was drawn up and they went to Switzerland for Cris to be around Velvet all the time to keep an eye on Alberto. Any female who's had a meaningful relationship with the opposite sex knows how bad a look (and outcome) clinging and spying would be.

Dondi, I loved your perfect response to the weird voting and TN business in general: whatever.

I can't wait for Raul to witness Cristina's fall from grace.

Esteban tells his daughter she's not allowed to date? This didn't work out well back in the day. Romeo and Juliet, Esteban?

I wonder what part Sofi"s mother played in how she turned out. Maybe she was bitter and resentful realizing that Esteban married her to get a safe landing spot in London. I wish Rick would give up on her; Luisa is a much better choice, even if she is on tour.

Can't they prove, with written documentation, that the original sketches are dated before those of Pilar's?

I was frankly surprised that Emilio and Alberto hit on Esteban so quickly. Proving it may be hard, but it's a start. And, of course, they both know about the financial malfeasance that resulted in his father booting him out of Velvet.

The above comment was me, novelera. The site seems to again not recognize me. at least on my desktop computer. Caray on my phone knows who I am.

Velvet

Thanks dondi. Once again I had technical difficulties. It didn't record last night and the on demand puts the CCs up a couple of sentences later so it is easier to just turn them off and just listen. You're recap fills in the gaps of what I don't understand. Nothing really to add. I understand Esteban and Pilar resenting how their father cut them out of the family business but trying to bankrupt the store seems rather dramatic. It was their dad's doing, not Benjamin or Alberto.
