La Fea Más Bella #175 12/27/06 Bellas learn history, and Feas repeat history

We open at Conceptos with Lola wondering how Rafael is doing and Sara saying he’s the same or worse, that he’s in his ultimate days and Marta doesn’t want to hear it because it’s ruining the tamale..? Don Fer walks in and takes it away from Marta and proceeds to eat it saying something about seeing if it’s poisoned. He continues eating it and then asks if anyone heard from Lety, which no one did so he offers the tamale to Sara on behalf of Marta, then finally gives it back to her after she has foamed at the mouth plenty. Marta says he never comes out of his office poor thing, as if he never gave it up. Sara says well what’s he going to do, sit out here with us? She calls Omar the Imbecile and tells him Fer waits for him. Sara wonders what in the world could it be that makes Fer worry so much about the whereabouts of Lety. Marta doesn’t know but she’s upset that Lety left without explaining anything, she wonders if Lety got other friends, and Sara says she’s not capable of something so low.

Back at the beach Aldo and Lety are talking about the fishermen and she asks if he’ll show her how to fish. He says of course, you make a beautiful fisherwoman. She doesn’t believe him. He wants to run again, she begs him no because she’s hurting, then she fakes him out and takes off and he follows her.

Back at Conceptos Fer is back in his supposedly former office again the phone rings and he yells for Lety to answer, then he catches himself. But he answers asking if it’s Lety. Of course it’s not, it’s his Mom, and they are coming by later and she wants to make sure things are ready for them. She hangs up on him and he thinks it’s awkward for her to do that.

At the beach, Caro shows up in a funky green get up and wonders what they were doing. Aldo explains why they were running, and Lety appears very fatigued. Aldo tells her a good bath will fix her up and he leaves to go prepare the food. Caro tells her they have to hurry because they have to be at many places. She hopes a bath will indeed help.

Back at Conceptos, the cuartel continues their speculation about Fer sleepwalking around and worrying about Lety, that she’s ok and her leaving without explaining. La Oxi walks in and the insults begin to fly. Juana mocks her sashays. They discuss her taking care of Don Humberto, and she makes a crack about Lety being the queen of the feas and the boss of the cuartel, and Roller Derby chic busts out again trying to pick a fight with Alicia and she essentially ignores Sara.

In Fer’s office he tells Omar that Lety is not going to show up, instead Mora is coming. Omar is impactado. He laughs and says there is then an exchange of gargolitas and now he’ll have the privilege of seeing the masculine version. Fer gets mad and tells him to call her by her name. Omar wonders if he knows where Lety is and Fer angrily says no. Omar makes fun of him having everything in control and asks if he doesn’t think all this is strange. Fer says of course it’s strange, what a foolish question. Omar then wonders what happened to his tie. Fer sarcastically says that he is so observant; he hasn’t worn a tie for two days. He yells that Omar is walking around here with his head in the clouds essentially pretending that everything is perfect. Omar says not in the clouds, but at least it should be that no one can notice your misery and failure.

Back in Acapulco Lety is quizzing the Bellezas on their trivia skills for the competition. They thank her for helping them. She tells them besides being beautiful they should be well prepared. She then mentions that she knows someone very beautiful but very lacking and she says they call her the Oxigenada….

Back at Conceptos the very same is wondering if Lety is coming. They tell her she’s not coming because she’s out of the City. Oxi speculates where she might be, at a Fea conference, on vacation to get her cousins the Mummies of Guanajuato (famous mummy museum there, bodies in the late 1800’s early 1900’s whose families couldn’t pay a grave tax were dug up and put on display for public shame). She then jokes that maybe she went to the Nuestra Bellezas pageant in Acapulco, and says no way, not that…..

Back at the pageant Caro now tries her hand at asking the test questions. Alex shows up and comments that the beauty is much more important than the knowledge. Nice... Caro asks what year the Berlin wall came down, and then in which treaty did Mexico lose almost half of it’s territory. Do you know? I’ll post the answer later…Lety is upset because the girls seem to forget all of the things she went over with them and none of them knew the answers.

Back at Conceptos Oxi tells them they should get to work and not have so much concern for one person. Roller Derby chic breaks out and tells Oxi not to provoke her. Oxi tells them that the Mendiolas and Ariel will arrive any minute and she doesn’t want them to see this disorder. They make fun of her assertion of authority. She snaps back that because Fer is no longer Pres and Omar not Vice Pres and Lopez and Marcia aren’t there, she is the highest authority. Ariel sneaks in and hears her oration. The cuartel see him and start working feverishly. Alicia tells the cuartel no one is superior to her and that’s how she likes to see them, listening to the president of Conceptos referring to herself. Ariel interrupts and asks Oxi how they can help her. She tries to cover, he just tells her to get coffee to the conference room. He asks if she knows if Lety is coming, Alicia thinks that she has many commitments and can’t show up. He wonders what is so important that she can’t show up. She says Lety thinks she’s more important than anyone including him.

Back at the pageant Caro scolds the girls that their marks will be really low. She continues asking questions and Lety starts to run around shouting the answers to the girls. Caro catches her and wants to know what she is doing. We see a camera that is filming the girls then zoom in on Lety. Hmmm….

Back at Conceptos Humb and Teri show up to Abitchita fawning all over them. He asks if everyone is in the meeting, including Lety. Oxi tells them the roll call, and that Lety is not expected. Marcia shows up next and they tell her everyone is here but the meeting hasn’t yet started.

We are now back at Irma’s and she is telling Luigi she hopes that he’ll find peace from their plan to have her children come and that confession is always a relief in one’s last hours. Luigi tells her to stop. She explains death is depressing. Luigi thinks she is an angel and that she shouldn’t have done this after all that happened. She tells him that Rafa is still a human being going through a hard time and that she might be able to do something. Just then the doorbell rings. Luigi answers to greet Irma’s daughter and granddaughter. They embrace wholeheartedly.

Back in the meeting everyone takes his or her place and Ariel wonders when Lety will arrive. Fer tells him she won’t.

Back at Irma’s tears all around, as everyone gets introduced to each other.

Humb is mad that Lety isn’t coming and thinks the meeting should have been cancelled. Fer tells them a representative will come, Mora. Ariel makes fun that she abandoned them to her boyfriend.

Outside Abitchia is yelling at the waitress who’s had enough and she yells back that ever since she lost her car she’s been much more hateful that she was even before. Oxi curses Mora as she walks away. On cue the bell rings and Mora comes out of the elevator. He hides from the Oxi and almost gets away with it, but she sees him and asks him why he’s here, desgraciado, and he tells her he has an important meeting. Sara tells him where to go and the meeting folks are impactado when he walks in and announces himself there on behalf of Lety. He hopes this will be brief because he has a packed agenda. There are looks exchanged as he takes his seat. Humb tells him how surprised they are that Lety doesn’t show up. Tomas asks if Fer didn’t tell them she was out of the city for a few days.

Back in Aca. Lety apologizes profusely for helping the contestants claiming that they are very nervous and she just wanted to help. Caro forgives her.

The priest has shown up at Irma’s to take Rafael’s final confession and now Irma takes her daughter to see Rafa. Luigi is left to entertain the grand-daughter. He makes a baby face but realizes she’s too old for that. Rafa is thrilled to see his daughter. Luigi talks to the granddaughter, even throwing in some English to her, saying how cool Irma is. The doorbell rings, Luigi answers and it’s the son Jorge. Luigi is impactado.

Back at the meeting Ariel wants to know if Lety knows how important it was that she was here. Fer says he could only leave messages. Tomas says she knows and that’s why he was sent as the legal representative, the manager of Filmo Imagen, he has cards but he forgot them. The lawyer says you may be these things, but you are not the proprietor so you can’t give them back the company. Tomas says, well yes, but she left the necessary authorization paper. Ariel says it wasn’t sufficient, she might be a swift economist etc. but she’s not a lawyer. Marcia suspects she did it on purposes and demands to know where Lety is. Tomas says he’s not authorized to give out that info and Fer has known this since he came to the house to look for Lety.

Jorge greets his niece and Luigi yells at him for hanging up, and Jorge apologizes that he was just mad at all his father did and that Luigi’s call made him decide to come after all. They kiss and make up…well anyway. Rafa is thrilled to have his daughter and she pardons him. He inquires about whether Jorge is coming too. Irma and the daughter aren’t sure what to say. So to give them time to think we go back to the meeting where Marcia proclaims how suspicious it is that Lety has gone away just now.

Tomas says it would be suspicious if neither of us came, but he says he presented his face for the both of them. Ariel tells him his face is ugly enough that it’s not sufficient. Omar cackles then shuts up. Tomas says well it’s simple then, you’ll have to wait for Lety to get back. Marcia wants to know where she is. He tells her he can’t divulge that either. Ariel warns him that if Lety doesn’t show up as soon as possible, they will have to resort to other methods of remedy. And the dum dum dum dum plays …….

Thanks for the recap! I felt sorry for Tomas, for once. Attacked by La Oxi, then mocked by the Men-Vill gang. I couldn't decide if Fern was trying to help him along when he put his hand on Tomas'and responded to the interrogation. And I had been mentally pairing off Omar & Marcia, but after last night I hope he will fall hopelessly, deeply in love with someone who makes Lety look like a beauty queen.

If I'm not mistaken, Luigi's scarf of the last few eps and Caro's hat from last night have been recycled from Luigi's World Cup ensemble. At least Luigi is rid of the "rat tail".

Ok, speaking of Caro's hot...whoa. Whoever does her wardrobe really runs hot and cold. Sometimes she looks awesome and sometimes....whoa.

oops that should say Caro's hat of course

Heh, thanks.

The coffee-bearing employee told Alicia she was more odious (odiosa) than usual since she lost her car. Then Alicia, covering, told the cuartel, 'she said I was a goddess' (diosa). I think.

Lety's cast watch:
Last night she had it on again, with the sling. They must have filmed some of these scenes out of sequence.

I heard the same things, Melinama. Alicia told them the waitress said "o, diosa." Pretty sure nobody bought that, though. ;-)

Thanks for the recap/translation. I miss so much without these.

I felt sorry for Tomas, too, St. Loopey. It did seem that Fernando was almost trying to protect Tomas from the attacks and ugliness. Almost as if through Tomas' association with Lety as her representative, who was always picked on in the same way, that he was protecting Lety. Fernando is the only one in that room with an ounce of kindness. Omar just will not give up on the cuts about Lety. It looks like he would stop that out of respect for his friend who has asked him repeatedly not to call Lety names. It's time for Fernando to set some firm boundaries with Omar.

Caro's green hat. Yikes! It was on Luigi or Caro in an earlier episode in a parade or else it's a very popular hat in Mexico.

I wonder if the camera shot of Lety will hit news coverage of the pageant and be seen by Fernando? He has to find her some way. I had a friend who called in sick to work once and went to an event that was picked up by the evening news. Her boss saw her on TV. Maybe this will happen the same way.

I can't imagine that hat would be popular anywhere. :) I think you're right though - Luigi did wear it in Germany. Good catch. I have a poor memory for ugly accessories. I suppress the memories.

I noticed that when Ariel gave his seat to Tomas, he remained standing rather than sit someplace else. I assume this was a cheesy tactic to try to be more intimidating. I was really surprised when Fern touched Tomas's hand. Given that he's Lety's proxy, perhaps we should be grateful that Fern stopped there. :-)

(PS: Leftover carrots and turnips smell skunky no matter how much butter and love you put in them.)

I also think that Fern was being kind to Tomas during the meeting of the vipers because he is basically a decent human being. I also thought it interesting that he did it after that scene with cement for brains when he ranted on about Tomas Mora and showed how jealous he is. I suspect that he is beginning to take the first tiny steps to finding himself by standing up for both Lety and Tomas at the meeting and also for ditching his ties.

I've suspected for some time that cement for brains has a thing for that shrewish harpy and that they deserve each other and will probably be divinely happy.

Another vote in agreement for that TV shot being the tip off to Fern as to where he can find Lety.

Didn't everyone at the meeting look a little surprised when Tomas mentioned that Fern had been to Lety's house looking for her and knew she was out of town? Didn't he also say that she was not alone? The plot thickens.

Well, actually Tomas did cast a doubtful look at their joined hands - I took it to mean that he was afraid Fern might break it, given their last few encounters. It's actually much funnier looking at it through the Lety-proxy lens ;)

BTW, Julie, I hee-hawed when I read the made with butter vs. love comment. A dear friend of mine and I have a running joke because anytime her mother or mine cooks something especially delicious, the secret ingredient is invariably a stick of butter (we're from the South - the more fat the better).

I think this novela is heading for trainwreck status. I noticed some new names in the cast that have not yet made appearances, always a bad sign. Enought with Irmita and her family or are we supposed to keep watching and see the backstory of all the feas, Caro, Aldo, Omar etc before we get what we want. Give me a break!

We know that it has been extended twice but even in Mexico people must be getting tired of all the side stores.

Thanks for pointing out where I've seen that green hat before. I knew it looked familiar. I'm not much of a hat person, but I kinda like it.

After Thomas came into the meeting, I actually thought they kept Ariel standing because there was no place for him to sit other than the other side of the table (you know where they throw all of the unimportant people). This would help cut down on the number of shots they'd need to complete the scene. However, your theory on his intimidation factor makes sense, too. He is just such another word for donkey. I can honestly say he is the only character on this show who absolutley has no redeeming qualities, IMHO.

I was really happy to see more of Fernando last night. I've been feeling like there was a Fernando drought going on for awhile and his scene w/ Martha's chile was a refreshing tall glass of water!! I can handle all of this Aldo stuff, as long as they keep a good balance between his scenes and scenes w/ Fer. I need my daily Fer fix (and one or two token scenes just doesn't cut it---even if he is admitting his love for Lety to Marcia).

I didn't mind Caro's hat and didn't remember it had been Luigi's. I think Caro is very attractive in anything she wears (although for some reason she reminds me of a Vulcan on Star Trek)!
Thanks to everyone for the daily recaps!
Happy New Year!
Carrie L.

Kris, great recap! Neat details, too. I wasn't really so tuned in when they went to Germany.

It was really a thrill to see someone tell Alicia she's odious, other than the cuartel members. She is, and it's good to know the rank and file are well aware of it.

The bellezas are warming to Lety. That's fun to watch. She needs that kind of encouragement. They seem to like her for who she is. Is it my imagination or did we see far less of Aldo last night than the previous two or three? It felt like we saw more of Fern than Aldo.

Jeanne

I think the Vulcan thing might be her eyebrows, her calm demeanor, and her excellent posture.

Keeping Ariel in frame - oh duh I can't believe I didn't even think of that. Actually I am a little surprised that Omar hasn't been moved to the other side of the table, for the amount of useful input he has at these meetings. :-)

I liked the POV shots when Tomas entered the boardroom. We've had several Lety-Cam shots but I think this was the first for Tomas. I thought the faces everybody made at him were a little unfair. He doesn't look that bad when he's wearing a suit that fits and a properly knotted tie.

Thanks Meli for clarifying above the odiosa - o diosa. I missed that - it is pretty funny, actually, and something I would enjoy noting! Especially from a contracted waitress telling the Oxi off! Yeah, we had gale force winds last night, so my reception was really poor (no cable) plus I'm slightly ill and congested so my hearing is wacked. These things combined with no caption aid and rushing things before I travel tomorrow, well, I'm sure other conversations were glossed a bit, so I welcome any additions. Hopefully my summarizing still gave you all enough gist though.

Prospero y Feliz Ano Nuevo a Todos!!!

Safe travels, Kris, and if you have a cold and are flying, decongestant helps (from the long time teacher of the deaf who doesn't want to see your middle ear pressure go up).

Jeanne

It's pretty easy to miss a good joke during an Alicia/Cuartel debate. Even when I'm recapping I tend not to put a lot of effort into those scenes. It's different when they're having a real conversation, but usually they're just trading insults, and even if they're funny, I prefer to conserve my strength for scenes where important things are being discussed. :-)

I forgot you were traveling, Kris. Have an awesome and safe trip!

:) Thanks Jeanne!

BTW for those of you who didn't catch it, the answer was the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 that gave up over half a million square miles. Without this, I'd be living in Mexico instead of the US. Interesting paradox! :)

So would I since I'm less than a hundred miles from the border as it is.

I can't help thinking back to when Oxi faked those pregnancies that it would serve her right if she ended up pregnant after her night with "the Tiger" Tomas Mora. Makes me laugh just to think about it.

Has anyone ever taken notice of how many disagreeable names for people Oxy seems to have in her repertoire. When she lets loose with one of her long-winded name calling sessions she sounds like street trash with no class, which takes away from any physical beauty she might have. Someone should take her aside and tell her that.

The green hat didnt make any kind of impression on me pro or con. The one thing that I did keep noticing was how close Lety stands to Aldo, with that goofy smile - like she's begging him to kiss her. Has she ever heard of personal space?

Fern taking the tamale was hilarious - he's such a fun boss.

Last night, Alicia called Sara a hunchback, and someone called Alicia a buzzard.

I learn the coolest words from Alicia and Luigi, so if I ever need to call someone a platypus, mustached corncake, or slacker, I'm all set.

I'm also wondering about the many backstories that are thrust upon us and hoping they're not a useless distraction from the main love story. The actor who mumbles the part of deathbed Rafael--does someone owe him a favor or what in order to give him a part in the most popular show in Mexico? I can see one purpose in this sideline story--Luigi is getting closer to the Feas, forced to consort with them in order to console Irmita. Ay de mi, let's keep Fern and Lety in the forefront.

I liked learning/remembering last night that tamales singular = un tamal. Same with a bean - un frijol.

Regarding Lety's and Aldo's "personal space", they probably don't have the same concept in Mexico. An Argentine friend still laughs about his visit to Chicago where he was gesturing with his hands and talking and some stranger tapped him on the shoulder and told him he was in his personal space. He had no clue what he was talking about.

I know I am a small quiet minority, but I actually don't mind the fluff story lines so much. I'm glad the show isn't ending as soon as it would otherwise, and I like not having the pressure of feeling like I can't miss an episode. It was soooo intense for a while there that I don't mind having a break.

Libby, as far as I can tell you're not quiet. ;-) And I'm not sure you're in the minority, either.

I don't mind the B and C plots either, and I'd especially like to know what's going on with Lola and her ex, although I am still eager for Rafael to die because I find him difficult to understand and recap. And also pathetic.

I also don't mind the intensity getting taken down a notch. If anyone remembers the whole Pilar/underwear commercial thing, you know the true meaning of "slow pacing." I think the story is moving on at a much better pace than that, now. Still pretty slow, but not at a standstill like with Pilar.

As much as we would all love to see a happy Lety/Fern reunion soon, I think we also realize that we've got quite a few months left to this novela (still not clear exactly how many, but I think at least 5). So it's fair to expect a couple dozen more red herrings between now and then.

I know it's mean, but will Rafael just die already so we can get over that and get back to more Fernando time???

-Jen

Julie, so true about the pacing during that underwear (lingerie??) commerical. This is definitely better, and the back and forth like a ping pong game between scenes and locales adds some movement to it. Sound bytes are not too bad.

I was interested to read your note about recapping Rafael, who is difficult to understand. My husband interprets full time (sign language) now, retired from administration, and he often interprets for the most elderly deaf people who cannot be understood by anyone because they sign so haltingly and with such indistinct signs. My husband can understand because he had deaf parents who signed like that at the end of their lives. Is that similar to how you "hear" Rafael? He seems halting and indistinct to me. Is that what you experience when he speaks? If so, this is a terrific actor. Just an observation.

Jeanne

OMG, you are SOOO right about the whole Pilar plot line...THAT tried my patience, but I'm glad I stuck around cause it's definitely been worth it :) Neither the Rafael thing nor anything else recently has been nearly that bad.

Omar was in the boardroom after the "clan" slithered out..He is watching the cattle call from Acapulco and making his usual sexist womanizing comments..Fern walks in, and while they are talking the beauties come and go on the screen and Lety is right there..She waves at the camera..Only in the world of telenovela would that be missed..

Five more months..?Love the show-but can we take five more months? Mo

The sound quality on this show seems poor. I've been studying Spanish for 6 months, and this is the first telenovela I got interested in. Until a couple of weeks ago when I started watching "Luz Maria", I thought my difficulty with understanding the characters in "La Fea..." was totally due to my own lack of facility with the language. But I can understand speech in "LM" much more easily than in "LFMB". The music in "LFMB" is often intrusive, but in addition they just seem to have some problems with their microphones and there's an audible echo on the "lobby" set where all the cuartel sit. In Fern's office especially, I've noticed that sometimes one character's lines can hardly be heard while the other character sounds fine.

Surely the producers of a show that's having this much success could afford to upgrade the sound quality. Just a thought.

Sound quality is bad, Rafael doesn't speak clearly, but a bigger problem for me is... I'm not sure what. I think he was using the past conditional tense, maybe, or some crazy thing like that which gave me problems, or maybe it was tortured sentence structure, or maybe it was a surplus of pronouns. Plus, he was speaking cryptically, hinting at his impending death but not directly addressing it. So, even with the helpful captions, I couldn't easily parse a lot of what he was saying
