La Fea Más Bella #186 1/11/07 Lots of Lawyer Talk but At Least No Guru Talk

Caro can see that something is bugging Lety. Lety tells Caro about her make-out session on the beach with Aldo. Caro is excited for her. Lety says she totally regrets it and now doesn’t want to see him ever again.

In the executive lobby, Mama T tells Marcia that Humberto had a terrible night after learning about Fern’s antics and about the judge’s ruling to give Lety the company. Humby won’t be coming to the office. She thinks they should keep him distanced from all these problems to preserve his health. She asks where Fern is. Marcia doesn’t want the employees to here her answer and takes Mama T to her office. The cuartel watch as Marcia and Mama T walk by and comment that bad luck does not discriminate.

Lety says she feels bad because she kissed Aldo, and she shouldn’t have done it because she still loves Fern. Caro asks if she is thinking of going back to Fern. Lety says “Of course, not, Fern doesn’t love me, he just used me.”

Marcia tells Mama T about her rescue mission the night before. Mama T has hopes that Marcia will get back together with Fern. She is encouraged when Marcia says she still had all of Fern’s stuff at her house. She asks if they “reconciled” [that’s mom-speak for “boinked”… ick!]. Marcia says no, because she still has her dignity. She slept in another room. Still, Mama T says the outlook seems promising. She should give him another opportunity. Marcia says she did. She gave Fern the suitcase and told him to pack his crap, but it was a test; if Fern takes his things, that means he has no interest in staying, if he leaves them, well…

Meanwhile, Fern is getting ready to leave Marcia’s place. He looks at his stuff and the suitcase on Marcia’s bed…. he lingers… he... he… decides to leave it! [Doh! Fern, what are you thinking?!]

Caro tells Lety why Aldo is a good deal. He has no other commitments (i.e. fiancee), he's extraordinary, plus he would never deceive her. Lety says this is not a good time to fall in love. Caro tells her to go for it!

Alicia arrives at work late and the cuartel chide her. Alicia says it’s so hard to get out of bed when you sleep on silk sheets; not like the poor folks, who sleep on lumpy beds and are better off just getting up. The cuartel mock Alicia’s uppity-ness. Just then Marcia yells “ALICIA!”

Lety and Caro are in a shop buying gifts for the bellezas, and they marvel at the convenience of credit cards. Aldo calls Caro on her cell. They discuss something about going to a special place for lunch. After the call, she tells Lety that Also sounds very happy, and says that he has a special surprise for them. Lety looks worried about that.

Alicia knows she’s in deep doo-doo, so she tries to deflect the scolding by telling Marcia how wonderful she looks [oh yeah, today Marcia is sporting super-straightened hair and has traded her heavy coral eye shadow for heavy rose eye shadow… actually, cotton candy might be a better description]. Anyhoo, Alicia’s tactic does not work, and she gets yelled at for being late. Alicia says it’s easy for Marcia to judge, since she has transportation to get to work, while Alicia can’t even take a taxi. Marcia suggests the bus. Alicia is offended. Ariel arrives with his personality-challenged lawyers. Ariel tells Alicia that she has the perfect man for her. Alicia excitedly looks toward the lawyers. No, Ariel says, not them, what you need is a taxi driver… pa-dum-pum! Before she can retaliate, he orders her to bring them coffee.

The execs head to the boardroom. Mama T tells Ariel and Co. that the judge has ruled in Lety’s favor. Ariel is impactado.
In the exec lobby, Fern strolls in whistling and walking with his head turned toward the wall. As usual, he asks if Lety has called. Sarah replies that she hasn’t. He continues to walk while looking away from them. The cuartel is intrigued by this. Alicia walks in and is in the right spot to see Fern’s black-and-blue face. She screams, which startles Fern. He jumps and turns around. The cuartel see him and scream, too. Fern tries to explain that he tripped and fell, but it doesn't hurt at all.

Ariel tells the rest of the execs that now that Lety has the company, they are bankrupt and ruined. He asks where Fern is; he bets that Fern couldn’t even dare to show his face. Just then Fern walks in. Seeing his beat-up face, Ariel looks disgusted. Insults fly. Mom defends Fern [about time, mom!]. Ariel tells Fern he’s an embarrassment. He asks how it feels to be a loser. He puts his hand on Fern’s shoulder -- which causes Fern much pain-- and tells Fern he feels pity for him. He asks Fern if he is here to defend Lety again. Fern says he’s done doing that. [Doh! Strike two, Fern.]

Julieta cries as she reads Lety’s diary-- the part where Lety writes that she is not capable of keeping Fern’s company, even if he deserves it. Just then Lety calls. Lety asks what’s wrong. Mom says that Lety being gone makes her realize just what a wonderful person Lety is, and that she misses her. Lety tells her not to worry; in Acapulco she is surrounded by people who make her feel important. Mom exclaims “Hallelujah, that’s just what you need!”

Humby has called into the boardroom and lays out the game plan. They need to take drastic measures. They will hire a specialized lawyer to bring criminal charges against Lety.

Meanwhile, Tomas is talking to the happy-hour lawyers. One of them is wearing funky glasses with rhinestones. He explains that he was at one of those restaurants “with poles” [a strip club maybe?] and his friend sat on his regular glasses, so the friend then let him borrow her own glasses… whatever. Tomas tries to explain that Lety doesn’t want to keep Conceptos. He wants the lawyers to find a way to reverse the judge’s ruling.

Humby tells Fern that he needs to call Lety’s family. They might be able to pressure Lety into coming back.

Robopop is doing and interviewing over the phone for an accounting job. He tells the prospective employer that he comes from a noble, honest, and responsible family. He proudly tells of Lety’s high position managing a big company’s finances. Julieta listens in and thinks “if only he knew the truth.”

Caro and Lety bring the bellezas together on the hotel lawn for Aldo’s surprise. The bellezas discuss how hot Aldo is. A they walk away, Caro and Lety stay back. Lety says it’s ironic that the bellezas can’t wait to see Aldo, while she never wants to see him again. Caro tells Lety to get a grip. In Acapulco, you’re supposed to have fun.

Tomas tells the lawyers that if they don’t straighten this mess out, Lety will kill him. He pulls the end of his tie above his head like a noose.

Ariel tells Fern to call Lety’s family. Fern says he will call them in private.

No-personality lawyers have more bad news. In the next step of this legal process, Conceptos will be auctioned off to pay off the debt to Lety. The entire executive board is impactado. Ariel yells at Fern to go call Lety’s family already. Fern feigns panic, then calmly leaves. Ariel observes that, again, their fate is in Fern’s hands.

Tom tells the happy-hour lawyers to go to Conceptos to straighten everything out. The happy-hour lawyers explain to Tomas that in order to take the action he wants, Lety need to be there in person. They ask when she will return. They go into a long unnecessary discussion about when the beauty pageant in Acapulco will end.

In the presidential office, Fern Calls Julieta, who responds very coldly. He says that he wanted to avoid this, but if no one tells him where Lety is, he will have to tell her and Robopop the truth about what’s going on, because Lety is behaving very badly with the company. Julieta, with Ninja-like reaction, responds, “And you? Haven’t you behaved badly?” She goes on to tell him off, asking how dare he have the nerve to accuse Lety when it was Fern who dragged her into that hell. It’s a miracle she’s still alive after all he has put her through. Fern is impactado and asks if Lety told her all of this. Ninja mom says Lety did not need to say anything for her (mom) to understand what's going on. She asks him if he has the pantalones [pants] to tell her husband everything he has done. Fern tries to tell her that Lety is making a mistake by trying to take over the company. Ninja mom says he’s mistaken, she does not want his company and Tomas is working with the lawyers to get that straightened out. She tells him to leave her family alone. Fern says that things are getting complicated. Ninja mom says he made them complicated. Lety made a mistake and she’s paying for it, but he got her mixed up in these problems. She hangs up on him and Fern pretends he’s still talking to her, thanking her and saying it was nice chatting with her.

Happy-hour lawyers finally ask what the pageant has to do with Lety. Tomas explains that she will be back as soon as the pageant ends. Happy-hour lawyers insist that Tomas must tell them all the nitty-gritty details about the case in order to understand how they can help. Tomas is hesitant. They say they can not continue on the case until Tomas spills the beans.

At the hotel, the girls find Aldo’s surprise: a barbeque. The bellezas think it’s the best surprise ever! Aldo has a big goofy grin and immediately asks for Lety. Lety is hiding in the back of the crowd, obviously dreading having to face Aldo again.
Fernando remembers his conversation with Ninja mom. Omar walks in and compares Fern to Julio Cesar Chavez [famous Mexican boxer]. He also asks just how many rottweillers he got into a fight with. Fern rehashes his conversation with ninja mom. He says she knows everything, and she peeee-oh’d. They will stand by Lety, and with good reason, because they are a good Mexican family with values.

Thanks Alma! I couldn't watch tonight so I was especially grateful for a recap. Sort of a filler episode, seems like, but at least no more drinking!

Thanks Alma! Just finished watching! I was dying looking at Fer's face so disfigured. He was really cracking me up! Bet that eye thing hurts a little! Definitely glad to see comic relief with the lawyers and Tomas!

Oh, did everyone note the hair by the way? She suddenly decided to uncurl it? What???? :)

Comic relief is right--and that brings me to why I think Fernando is more attractive than Aldo. Aside from the Chiclet teeth, Aldo has NO sense of humor. And Fernando makes us (and Lety) laugh. I recently read an article in Vanity Fair by Christopher Hitchens on the controversial thesis "Why women are not as funny as men." Whether you agree with that part or not, he says that women like men with a sense of humor, which I think is a well-accepted notion. Apparently, somewhere in the evolutionary scale, the ability to make a woman laugh is related to the ability to attract her sexually. Personally, I've always found humorless philosophical idealists (like Aldo) decidedly unsexy. So there.

Thanks for the recap. IMHO I believe Caro is wrong to push Lety into a realationship so soon. Though I have done it myself (too many times to admit), getting over a guy with another guy never really works out.

Thank you Alma, very interesting recap!
I kind of liked Marcia's straightened hair but she sure could lose the eyeshadow.
I was happy too to see Tomas and the lawyers. Even Alicia's preening was more welcome than more Fern bashing and self destructing. I'm really tired too of the constant Aldo/Lety therapy sessions.
Aldo could be a good friend for Lety, but for true love and passion she needs to go back to Fernando.
The chemistry just isn't the same between Aldo/Lety as with Fern/Lety. In my mind only Fernando Colunga could give Jamie competition in that area.
I keep wondering about the bird in the opening segment that someone ask about a while ago. It looks familiar to me but it bugs me that I can't place it. Does anyone know what kind of bird it is??????

Carrie L.

The bird in the opening looks like nothing more exotic than a pelican to me. I've seen them flying above the beaches in Mexico.

I agree about Fernando's wonderful sense of humor. Jaime Camil is brilliant at the comedy in this novela. But I like Aldo, too, nevertheless. Although, that said, I'm sure, estoy mas segura que nunca, that Fernando and Lety will somehow get together again.

The last scene with Omar imitating a Rottweiler and Fernando raving about how Lety's family would protect her with their Mexican values was great!

DaraB

What a great episode. I nearly died laughing when Fern tried to slither past the feas without showing his face. Hasn't he heard about sunglasses? I also thought he was an idiot for leaving his stuff at the harpy's house. It looks like he might just be being worn down by all of them constantly telling him that Lety is a thief, a liar (which she is) and that she never loved him. That hurts me to watch.

Julieta certainly told him off good telling him not to come to the house or call which he is going to have to do if for no other reason then to warn them about the criminal charges.

Was it just me or did those two lawyers Tomas was with looked a little sleazy? That building they were supposedly working out of looked a lot like the National Pawn Shop on the Zocolo.

At least Omar had the good sense not to make some stupid comment that Lety's fea looks must have worn off on Fern - something I would have sworn he wouldn't be able to resist.

I think Fernnado probable decided not to take the suitcase because it would hurt to lift and pull, not realizing the implication this would have to Marcia.

Connie

Thanks, Alma, for the terrific recap!

Connie, I am with you. I thought exactly that about why Fernando didn't take the suitcase.

I was glad Fernando sobered up. I was really glad Julieta let him have it between the eyes. Interesting, his mother rails at him about Lety, and so does Lety's mom. Only one of them is justified. I was incensed to see Teresita salivating at the idea of Marcia and Fernando back together. Ugh.

Jeanne

Fern will hang around with Marcia,as he has nowhere else to go..Marcia wants him with or without love. She wants to arm twist him into a loveless marriage, obviously just to be at a wedding. She's a pathetic character..Everything to she and Mama Bear Mendiola is perception..How they want things to look rather than actually how they are.

Finally last night Mama Bear defends her son (long overdue),but still don't like her..

The person that wrote about sense of humor in men or women..You are so right..I may not agree that men have a better sense of humor than women, but it's a great magnet as an attraction to the opposite sex, speaking personally of course..

Aldo cannot compare in any way to Fernando, even in Fernando's worse days..Like comparing apples to oranges..Sure didn't take much for Aldo to fall in love..Obviously, none available in Acapulco until Lety came to town.Maureen

Did anyone else think it was funny when Alicia hit herself in the FACE with her purse? She almost looked like she was surprised -like she had done it accidentally, and then they left it in for comic effect. Anyway, I thought it was one of the comic highlights of the episode!

It did look like Alicia hit herself by accident. That was amusing.

For those of you who have missed Fernando Colunga (is he the guy on the left margin of the Caray, Caray website?), do you think we could persuade Marcia to ride off into the sunset with him instead of Don Fern? I agree that Teresita and Marcia have a perspective that things will get back to "normal" and they are so misguided. Marcia is less so than Tere, but they both aren't getting it.

Jeanne

I'm no Colunga fan but even I can't see him with Marcia and supposedly it is one of those one shot deals kind of like Patty Monterola (I'm guessing).

Be VERY careful if you check the telenovela site. There are two listing for LFMB one noted US the other not. That is the Mexican version and I accidently read something on it yesterday that gives me hope that we are going to have a lot of laughs, some surprising romances and unfortunately a few more lies from Lety before everything ends.

Diana

Thanks for pointing out the importance of humor. I couldn't put my finger on it, but Aldo does seem to be lacking in the humor department---not that he doesn't have one at all, just that he doesn't make you laugh out loud. With all his philosophizing, he reminds me a lot of the "intellectual" guys in college, who try to impress girls with how smart they are. Meanwhile, it is the one cracking the jokes that gets all of the girls' attention.

You can see that I am in total agreement on funny men---humor is definitely a draw. Then to back it up with Jaime's looks, what a perfect combination.

As always, I loved the scenes with Jaime. I got a real kick out of him walking into Conceptos, and of course it touched my heart that he asked about Lety right away (ok you cynics will say it was for business concerns, but I'm not buying that). I don't even mind the Omar/Fernando rehash scenes, because, well, they have Jaime in them.

"Ninja mom"?? LOL!!

So, the bird is a pelican? I will take your word for it. We had pelicans in FL and they didn't look quite like that, but OTOH, FL squirrels look different from MA squirrels, so Mexican pelicans prolly look different than FL pelicans.

They're beautiful from far away, but do NOT let one crap on your beach blanket.

Birds - there are birds in those opening scene? I've missed those completely, one more thing to check out. I also noticed Alicia hitting herself in the face with her purse. One of the things I've always loved about novelas is that when those bloopers happen they just leave them in and keep rolling. I've seen doors that kept opening, characters crashing into pieces of furniture, items being dropped and then picked up again. I think it adds to the realism and charm of some of the productions.

Poor old Aldo, why bash him? -- of course he doesn't have a prayer with Lety, and of course he can't stack up against Fernando (it would ruin the show if he were a better suitor for Lety!) but Aldo's a nice, good-natured guy. Really, who could compete with Fernando? No one, as far as I'm concerned. Poor Aldo is toast.

Okay, so according to Tomas, the beauty contest is taking place in the evening of the current day. And Lety should be returning to Mexico DF the following day...So that could be one to two weeks for us.

I was surprised that Aldo would do a carne asada BBQ the day of the pagent! Maybe Mexican beauty queens are less concerned about fitting in their gowns...Didn't the last Miss America faint after the crowning because she hadn't eaten all day (and the weight of her chain-metal dress)!

Jewels

I agree with Carmel. Aldo doesn't stand a chance. I think his main function on the show is to help Lety get over bad Fernando so that she can march down the aisle with reformed Fernando. I enjoyed the end where Doña Julieta told Fernando off.

Told him off and hung up. Phones are always getting slammed on this show. Lety nearly drowned a phone last night. :-)

You're right about the phones. Fern is always pounding his against something.

I have to say I'm starting to feel sorry for Oxi. They've got her so cinched into her clothes she sometimes looks like she is going to explode. Picture her with all those buttons just flying around the room. Paty Navidad has to be an awfully good sport to play a part where she has to stand all the time since it would be impossible for her to sit down in those skirts.

Gee, it has been a long time since I last saw Alicia sit down in a scene....

Julie, the squirrels where I live are black (we have some brown and gray ones, too, but most are black). That's really odd looking the first time you see it--I thought they were skunks.

Jeanne

My friend told me he saw black squirrels in San Francisco. The ones in MA are fat and have incredibly full, fluffy tails. The ones down south are much leaner-looking and their tails aren't as impressive, but their manners are better.

I've been thinking about that comment about humor=sexy, and I have to say, it explains a lot. I do hope that Aldo has helped to raise the bar on what Lety considers acceptable behavior in a beau, but man, give the guy some Groucho glasses or something.

Yes, leaving the suitcase was a bad idea.I think the fat lady has sung on this Fern & Marcia relationship, but the only people that don't know it are Mama Bear Mendiola & Marcia..However, Marcia is trying to hang on by her fingernails to Fern..If he doesn't get together with Lety,I don't believe it's going to be Marcia..At least, I hope not..Mo

I don't understand Lety's behavior. Why didn't Lety allow Fernando to explain the contents of the letter? She ran off with hurt feelings. I would think that she would have wanted an explanation in order to alleviate some her suffering. However, she continues to avoid dealing with the problem.

I think Lety didn't stay around to ask Fernando about the letter because in her mind is was pretty self explanitory w/ what the letter said and what had already happened between her and Fer. He had obviously lied to her and then w/ him constantly asking her to cook the books----it seemed clear what he was after and it wasn't time between the sheets with the fea.

I'm still ticked at him for walking away when he heard her sobbing in the cueva. He should have ignored Marcia and Helmet Head and gone back in there to her and tried to explain, but he didn't and now the novela goes on longer.....

In a different vein, has anyone else noticed the complete lack of talent that the actress playing Teresita has? I watch her scenes and it is like she's giving speeches and not interacting with the other actors. It must be difficult to act a scene with her. I'm impressed more and more by those who share scenes with her, because it is obviously their talent that is making the scenes work at all.

"...has anyone else noticed the complete lack of talent that the actress playing Teresita has?"

That's why I groaned when i read that Julissa was demading a bigger part. It's as if she went to some antiquated theater school where they taught acting by numbers. "In this scene I will use anguished expression number two." "On this speech I will use angry tone number one." And the way she all but salivated when she asked if her kids had "reconciled" the night before -- ¡ay, Marcia! It's probably too much to hope for, but I keep wishing that one of these capítulos Doña T and Queeen Luigi will walk out of Conceptos and get mowed down by the microbus.

Our squirrels are red. Not fire engine red, but like fox red (in fact they are called fox squirrels) or maybe from crayon box a burnt sienna. Adorable little buggers.

Geez, we are talking about squirrels and pelicans now. OK, the show has sunk to a new level of captivating us I guess. :)

Pelicans and squirrels. That's about it! (The black ones are cute, though, and really well-behaved. They apparently only live in a few places throughout the country.)

;-)

Jeanne

In Michigan we have both brown and black squirrels depending on which part of the state you live in. They can be really friendly and we use to have one who would come to the side door everyday and take a peanut butter sandwich from me.
The bird in the opening looks like something prehistoric to me. It looks larger than a pelican but being no expert I can't place it.
Poor Alicia looks like one of those balloons you played with as a kid and could twist in the center. Her waist seems to be getting smaller and smaller and she popping out more on top.
PM looks like might have had her lips done?????????

Carrie L.

So much for LFMB furthering the plot last night.

Jeanne

Just to keep the theme going.....

I thought the bird was some kind of gull, then again, I'm no bird expert.

As for squirrels, we had an albino one a few years ago. It really stood out, so I got quite the squirrel's life education. I still miss the little bugger.

Yeah, you can tell this was a filler episode.

There is a squirrel who hangs out in a our backyard in the mornings. When he sees us in the kitchen, he comes up to our big glass patio door and stands on his hind legs. We open the door just enough to give him stale tortillas, which makes him a happy camper.
