La Fea Más Bella #196 1/25/07 More Marathon Meetings, and No End In Sight
In the boardroom, Humbo tells the rest of the gang that Lety needs time to think about their offer. The HaHAs want to take the opportunity to discuss some legal details which I didn’t understand. Then Mama Bear brings up a more pressing matter… lunch. HaHA 1 says he’d love roast beef, accompanied by a bit of tequila, of course. HaHA 2 agrees. Seeing the looks this provokes from the execs, HaHA1 says “okay, no tequila,” then he not-so discretely pulls his flask out of his jacket to show HaHA 2 that he’s got the beverage for their lunch order covered.
Fern says that if they don’t need him, he’d like to be excused. The lawyers all agree it’s okay since they don’t need him for their lawyerly discussions. Omar meanwhile has been reviewing Fern’s executive style notebook. He tells him not to forget his detailed notes (that is, the very nice drawing of Lety which he just spent all morning sketching instead of paying attention to the meeting). Fern snatches his notebook and walks out. Ariel calls to him, but Mama Bear tells him to leave Fern alone, as he is surely going to see Marcia.
Lety walks out of the building. She thinks she sees Aldo at other end of the driveway. She wonders if it’s him, then thinks that it can’t be. She gets on bus just as Aldo sees her. He runs to catch her. He bangs on the bus to stop it. Lety jumps off and they share a big fat hug. Aldo says she looks great and her inner strength is shining through. He says he has something very important to tell her. Lety says she’s having a bad day. Aldo says that’s okay, because he’s all ears. As they walk away from the building, Fern drives up in his sexy purple convertible. Luckily he just misses them because he’s on the phone.
Mama Bear goes to see how the love birds are doing in Marcia’s office [what, was she planning to watch them like the some mating ritual on the animal planet channel?]. She is disappointed that Fern is not there with Marcia. Marcia is slumped down in her chair, wallowing in her misery. She asks Mama Bear if she can be alone.
Fern meets the Physic Guy at a dark club. A mature woman in a strapless sequence dress is singing a torch song. PG is really enjoying the show. You can just see him swaying and moving his lips slightly to the song.
PG apologizes to Fern for asking him to meet there, but he had already arranged to come see Ariana the singer when Fern called [my closed captions failed me, so I may have gotten her name wrong]. The waiter asks Fern for his order. Fern asks for a whiskey. PG gives a disapproving look, and Fern changes his order to a tall refreshing glass of water. PG says that by looking at Fern, he can tell Fern has seen Lety. Fern responds that yes, he saw her and he couldn’t stop looking at her because she looks soooo pretty. PG remarks that that’s love. Fern goes on to explain how he’s screwed things up yet again. He says that things have gotten more complicated. He didn’t think he would ever see Lety again, so he went back to Marcia. He half-says, half-asks “Maybe it was a mistake?” [Gee Fern, ya think?]! PG cuts to the chase. He tells Fern he knows Fern is here because he wants to know if Lety will come back to him.
Lety and Aldo walk in a plaza garden. Lety says she doesn’t want to come back to Conceptos. Aldo asks if it’s because of Fern. Lety admits that, yes, because of him and Marcia. But on the other hand, she’ll feel guilty if she doesn’t return. Aldo says he loves that she can put herself in others’ shoes. He thinks Lety already knows exactly what she needs to do. Time for “Deep Thoughts by Aldo.” He reminds her how free she was at the ocean. He observes that one can be just as free by the ocean or in a tiny cubby hole of an office. All that matters is that one’s soul is free. Lety ponders the lesson as she looks at a fountain with a big sculpture in the background. Feeling much better now, Lety exclaims how gorgeous culture is. Aldo, not noticing the fountain at all because he is looking straight at Lety, replies “Yes, how gorgeous.”
Ariana sings a really gritty break up song that goes,“I’m starting over and the first thing on my to-do list is to forget your name!” Fern takes it to heart. He motions to PG how great she is. Fern gets pensive again. Maybe he’s listening to the song from Lety’s perspective. After the song, PG tells him to let go, to just let things happen. He says Fern and Lety’s story is not finished yet. They both still have a long road to travel. Fern is impatient and has many questions. What will happen with Conceptos? Will Lety accept the presidency? Will he have an opportunity to tell her everything that happened how he fell hopelessly in love with her? He needs to know because he will die, just die without her! PG gives Fern the skinny. He tells Fern he will quit Conceptos and remove himself from the life he knows in order to truly understand himself.
After her set, Ariana comes to greet PG. Fern tells her she got the lyrics wrong on that last song. The end of the song goes something like “The time I wasted with you, I have recuperated. I leave you without asking you for anything. As for you, you can go… wherever you want to.” He doesn’t clarify what it should be but it seems to me that the last line should be about sending the guy to hell! Ariana says she forgot the line and had to improvise. She goes on to tell him that he is lucky to be friends with PG. She was ready to throw her life away but PG saved her, and she’s now happy. She encourages Fern to do the same. PG adds that he must have patience. Fern admits he is lacking in the patience department. Then Fern suddenly is star struck and begins to act silly. He nervously asks for autograph. She obliges and he dictates to her, “To Fernando Mendiola, Thanks for last night… just kidding!” She is impactada and he cracks up before clarifying “Just write ‘with love and kisses.’”
Lety and Aldo return to Conceptos. She thanks him for showing up out of the blue. She suddenly remembers and asks him what his big news is. Aldo feels the treasure box in his pocket, but he leaves it there. He tells Lety they can talk later, right now it’s all about her! She thanks him again and makes him promise he will tell her about his news later. Aldo watches from the driveway as she walks back to the building. He suddenly remembers that he didn’t ask for her number. Just then Fern drives up. He tells Aldo that that the driveway is not for pedestrians. Aldo flashes back to Acapulco when Fern drove onto the beach in his car. He remembers that this is the guy who almost crashed into his boat.
In the office, Saimon shows off his strength by picking up empty boxes. Somehow the ladies are impressed. Lety walks in and the cuartel gushes all over her. Lety is happy to see them but she has to get back to the boardroom, where they are waiting for her. The ladies agree and Sarah says that everyone is there in the boardroom, except for Fern. Lety furrows her eyebrows. Meanwhile, Fern is tip-toeing up to the crowd of women. He walks right up behind Lety. I think he smells her hair. How he must miss the scent of her hair mousse. He surprises them when he says “Good Afternoon.” The ladies and Saimon scatter. Lety looks startled and isn’t sure which way to turn. Fern walks with her, staying right next to her, his hands clasped behind his back. They are this-close. My heart skips a beat…Lety’s probably does too. She says she has to call her parents and quickly walks away.
Tomas shows off is olfactory strength by correctly guessing everything that Julieta is making for dinner. She asks if he has heard from Lety. Tomas says no but she will probably have to continue to manage Conceptos. Just then Lety calls. She tells mom she has decided to take the job. Mom yells “What!?” Then follows by telling Lety how proud she is. Lety explains that she’ll feel worse if she doesn’t do it. But she’s hesitant because she’ll have to see Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb (i.e. Fern and Omar) everyday, plus now Marcia has quit over this mess. Mom tells her to take the opportunity. Tomas gets on the phone and gives her a pep talk about the great things ahead of her. Robopop overhears and grabs the phone. Lety tells him that Humbo asked her to become president of Conceptos. She advises that Don Humbo wants Robopop to call him. After the call, he beams with pride “My daughter the prez!” He says that she inherited his intelligence. Julieta thinks she might have had a hand in that trait as well. Tomas adds that she also inherited his beauty!
Lety returns to the board room and tells everyone that she accepts the presidency. Ariel sarcastically asks if they should thank her [I hope one day his face freezes in that cocky grin. It’ll become really painful after a day or two.] Humbo shuts him up. Lety doesn’t want their thanks. She’s doing it for her own tranquility.
Humbo asks Lety to name her demands. Lety says, first, she does not want to be there six months, she wants to be done with it as soon as possible. Second, she wants absolutely no orders from Fern. Ariel chimes in that of course Fern will not be giving orders anymore, since they (Fern and Lety) created this mess to begin with. Lety adds her third condition: no insults from Ariel! Fourth, she wants Tomas on board. The HaHAs are excited to hear their friend Tomas’s name. Santamaria recognizes Tomas as the manager of Filmo Imagen. He agrees, saying he did an excellent job at FI. Fifth, Lety says Marcia must stay. She says she respects her and her work there is valuable [uh… valuable? I’ve never seen her work]. Mama Bear asks about the agreement that Marcia referred to when she resigned in yesterday’s episode. Lety recalls the conversation where Lety told Marcia they will never have to see each other again. Marcia responded that if Lety doesn’t go, then she (Marcia) will. She snaps out of her flashback. She tells Mama Bear that this is not the time to go into details. Fern adamantly agrees.
Meanwhile, Marcia is in her office packing up. Humbo goes to Marcia’s office. He talks about the day she graduated and other special milestones. He reminds her of when she was a kid and played with the cameras and equipment. He says her father was so proud of Marcia’s ambition. They knew she would help run the family business someday.
Robopop calls the office. Alicia answers in her usual snippy tone. He says is returning Humbo’s call.
Marcia is crying but Humbo reminds her that she is a strong woman. Marcia says it very complicated and many things happened between her and Lety, though she can’t discuss the details. Humbo says he’s not interested in knowing those details. But he tells her that Lety will only take the presidency if Marcia stays. Marcia is sure Lety only wants to humiliate her. Humbo says that’s not the case. Besides, he wouldn’t let Lety stay and Marcia go. He lays on the guilt trip, saying Marcia’s father wouldn’t want that either.
Alicia is still giving Robopop a hard time when Humbo and Marcia walk back into the lobby. Alicia tells Humbo about the call, and asks if she should say that he’s not there. He responds “Como crees?” (literally “How do you believe?” but really means “what, are you crazy?”) He takes her headset to speak to Robopop and Alicia struggles to attach it to him correctly. Alicia says she can tell Marcia has been crying. She asks if Fern broke up with her again. Marcia tells Alicia to shove it.
As Humbo ends his talk with Robopop, Jasmin sees her chance and asks to speak with Humbo in private. He says he has no time for her now and walks off with Marcia. Alicia reiterates that no one will see her, and tells her she can leave now. In a rare and momentous show of solidarity, the cuartel applaud for Alicia. She bows and curtsies and strokes her hair.
Back in the boardroom, the HaHAs - who as someone mentioned turned out to be very smart after all - say they must meet with the judge tomorrow. They will represent Lety and Filmo Imagen. They advise that Santamaria and a Conceptos exec must also appear. Fern raises his hand to volunteer. Ariel says that it will have to be Fern, since the paperwork still lists him as the president. Fern grins like a little boy who just got picked to clean the chalkboard erasers [remember what an honor that was?]. They all agree to meet with the judge tomorrow at 9AM.
Humbo walks in with Marcia and announces that she has agreed to stay. Everyone claps. She promptly calls Fernando “mi amor” [if she had four legs, she would have pee’d on him to mark her territory -- would that make it okay to call her a bitch?]. She clarifies for everyone, especially Lety, that she has agreed to stay out of respect and reverence for Humbo and her parents, not because Lety asked her.

Humberto is a man of class & humility but to watch the scene between he & Marcia last night made me want to spit.
Now that Lety is taking over the reins of power at Conceptos, the vile verbal abuse will be muzzled.Well, at least to her face.
No, Lety is not free of blame,as someone pointed that out..She was part of Fernando's scam and she needs to stop the "woe is me" and remember she was a willing participant and blinded by love. As much as I love Lety's character, try ownership of your part in this saga and stop horse whipping Fernando..He's slowly realizing the error of his ways, but his way seems to be moving thru Marcia..Fern is still hanging onto the "bus" that left the station already.Mo
When Marcia came back into the room to say she would stay, and she was "marking her territory" (great metaphor, Alma), she placed her hands on the back of his chair when she could very well have gone to her own seat, she was directly faced off with Lety. You really called that one right, Alma. (Lots of good metaphors, and Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb is one of my faves, too).
It's so interesting that Santa María agrees with the HaHAs. They are all pretty with-it attorneys, and so the M-Vs really have no choice but to go with the program. Nice touch, that!
I still think Humberto should sell used cars. My husband would say he could sell ice to Eskimos.
Aldo put aside his own agenda for Lety's sake. He'll get to it, but he is patient and realizes how much she needs his strength right now. I still want to see her end up with Fern, but Fern is acting, as so many have noted, like an adolescent. Aldo is acting like an adult far more than is Fern, IMHO.
Jeanne
I would love to see Marcia walk out, arm and arm with Ariel and Alicia. It looks like no matter how much Fern humilates her she will try to stay attached to him!
I feel sorry for Lety having to face these henchmen every day.
Humb is one of my favorite characters. At least he show class and understanding. Mama T. on the other hand is a real snob. She trained Marcia well.
Fern is adorable. He just can't hide his love for Lety. I was hoping he would just grab her and give her a passionate kiss in front of the whole gang! Unfortunately he doesn't seem to have enough nerve or maturity for that yet!
Carrie L.
I was morbidly impressed by Humbo's handling of Marcia last night. Man, he pushed *all* of her buttons, didn't he? I bet he could have gotten any woman he wanted, back in the day... and yet he chose Darth Helmet-Hair. Go figure.
Although I'm still no big Aldo fan I was very impressed with his restraint. It looked as though he was expecting to hang around outside all day waiting for her, which still strikes me as improper, but he listened to Lety and didn't push his agenda (or his crummy plastic box with the pearl inside) on her, even though I'm sure he was dying inside.
The singer kinda made my ears bleed. (Not that I could have sung it any better myself.) Or maybe I just don't like torchy songs.
Marcia, Marcia, Marcia... I wish she could hear how she sounds when she talks to Lety. I think she would be horrified. (ICBW.)
BTW, I was knocked out by the # of comments yesterday (even if way too many of them were mine). I'm pretty sure that's the first time we've broken 70... and on a weekday, no less! Wowiee!!
;-)

I know that this is not the popular view here, but really, I am not sure we're being fair at all, because we all love Lety and Fern so much.. Again, just my opinion...
If only we could meet at the Christina taping after the show ends when the cast of LFMB is there..What a joy it would be to meet all,but realize that I'm probably the only one living not too far from Miami where Christina tapes her show..Thanks again all and keep those cards and letter coming here on the site we love..
We have some great writers here..Thanks for posting your thoughts everyday..Regards.Maureen,Ft. Myers,Florida
I hope these board meetings are over soon. They’re getting a little redundant, and it doesn’t help that they stretch them out with shots of Mama T just sitting there thinking “I wonder if I should have bought those shoes yesterday…What’s that outside the window...Those frijoles didn’t agree with me…” At least she wasn’t the one to give Marcia the come-to-Jesus talk. That Humberto, he knows how to push people’s buttons.
Have to give Aldo credit for not telling Lety what she should do and for restraining himself from giving her the box with his love token, much as he wanted to.
About Fern’s meeting with Jorge, it struck me as a little odd that a nightclub would be open and putting on a show in the middle of the day. Is that what they do in Mexico or just in Telenovela Land?
Fernando’s sketch of Lety – I dug out an old tape to see if it’s the same as the one Eduardo drew. Sure looks like it to me! That would explain why Fernando drew her with a barrette in her hair and different clothing.
Re: Marcia - I mostly agree with Louise - I don't think Marcia is a terrible person. That's why I think she would be ashamed of herself if she knew just how petty she sounds when she speaks to Lety.
But it is she, not Lety, who has been displaying a mean streak so far.
As far as her attachment to Fern - oh I agree that it would be hard to walk away from him. But they are practically siblings. And if she could see him as a brother, rather than a lover, I think they would actually have a much better (and less creepy) relationship than they do now.
As for the writers around here... the thing is, I love writing, but I'm not any good making up stories. That's why I like doing the recaps. I get to tell stories without all the fuss and bother of making them up. :-)
Great recap,Alma - loved the Marcia "marking her territory" observation.
I'm so glad that Lety's lawyers are very competent and abogado Santamaria agrees with them - that takes some of steam out of the "elitism" of the MVs.
Jeanne
No, Marcia can't be 100% the wicked witch of the west, but please remember how verbally abusive of Lety from day one of her employment at Conceptos-- arm in arm with that harpy Alicia (Oxi)..Sorry no sympathy for Marcia..She's of her own making.Proud, however, to see Lety rise above that bunch by refusing to accept the position unless her number one enemy stays on.What a girl. That's says so much about the character of Lety.
Omar gets it for just being an eternal juvenile and trying to make an issue of Fern's "notes". Fern gets it for laughing at the HaHa's misuse of Santmaria's name and then for the way he acted with the singer. Psycic Guy gets it for calling a meeting in a nightclub, open at noon which I never saw the many times I was in Mexico City, although on the other hand he is providing Fern with good advice.
Aldo gets it for his fortune cookie philosophizing and also being dumb enough not to ask for Lety's number AGAIN! Lety gets it for that vacuous look she gets while Aldo yammers on and on and also for running like a scared rabbit when Fern greeted her.
Humb goes to the top of my hate list and gets it for manipulating Lety with the guilt trip that she and Fern created this mess and there is a price she has to pay, he also gets it for manipulating Marcia with the trip down memory lane but MOST especially for his insulting reference to Lety as a desconocido. Humb baby referring to the future mother of your grandchildren as an outsider in a disparaging tone is not the way to go.
And my final head slap for the day goes to Alicia for her rude, unprofessional behavior, her laziness and for being an all around perro.
I hope tonight things go better but with the previews showing Luigi with his hands over his ears I have little hope.
Maureen
Loved when the cuartel clapped for Alicia when she got Yazmin to leave. United against a common enemy!
Hum really knows how to get what he wants...He almost had me crying last night. But, I thought it painted a better picture of Marcia and showed another side to her. Maybe she should have gone to Acapulco to see Dr Phil as well to help her figure out what she really wants.
Looking forward to Luigi’s reaction, wonder if he’ll threaten to quit. He’s such a drama queen. Remember when he threatened to quit and made Fern dress in drag and go to the club!
Jeanne
1) Between Alicia's badgering and Teresita's, Marcia must be heartily sick of unsolicited bad advice.
2) If Marcia got a few moments to herself, she might be able to form an intelligent thought or opinion of her own - one that could result in some wonderful changes. But that's just a hypothesis.
3) Teresita should be so interested in her own son. On second thought - scratch that. Fern could do without the kind of attention she usually bestows on him.
To see him smile so much after these last couple of months of anguish brings joy to my heart I must say.
I think the nightclub thing was just a rehearsal. And yes, she was horrible, and I'm a fan of Spanish singing. I laughed out loud when he grabbed his "notes" from nosy Omar and asked the singer to put "thanks for last night." Oh, Fernie, I love you so. Who cares about any of those other people on the show? Just kidding. Sandy
I'll call Christina's show here shortly to get the scoop..Will revert back..Let me check on the schedule,if there's one this early, okay?
Should be interesting tonight if Fern and Lety have to go meet the bankers together. I just hope Fern isn' stupid enough to babble on about how profoundly he really loves her because she sure is not going to want to hear it.
Janet
Just spoke with Cristina Show Miami and here is what Jose tells me::: Call back within two weeks..Yes, they are planning to have the cast of LFMB there at a taping, and the taping in Miami will be done prior to our ending here and held in the can until the show ends here, then we'll see all of LFMB cast with Cristina. As of today, they don't know the tape day,but if I keep calling back within two weeks they should know and we can get tickets..I'll be on the horn next week from here in my office until I get the day of taping..If no one is able to go to the taping with me,I'll go down myself take pictures and let everyone know how it goes..Regards.Maureen, Ft. Myers,Florida
I agree with Janet. For all his Deep Thoughts, Aldo doesn’t have much common sense. Pity that some organization doesn’t compile people’s phone numbers and publish them in book form. Whatever will he do now?
Alma, your recap was great!
Lisa
I mean even my 2 chihuahuas, Carmen and Desi, couldn't complain about me leaving for that trip.
Sandy
According to previews, it looked funny. He said something like, is there a camera hidden somewhere am I on candid camera...it was funny...I imagine today's will be great humor.
Fernando is one charismatic man and because of that I understand why Marcia and Lety act the way they do. I would be an emotional basket case if I lost Fernando to someone else - especially his former assistant. Marcia has lost a lot - Fernando's love and the family business. Maybe she needs some slack.
On the other hand, if Fernando towered over me the way he stood near Lety, I would have melted. Lety has to have a lot of strength to be near him especially since he betrayed her. She needs space.
I wish that Humb would show the same compassion for his son the way he is showing compassion for Marcia. Maybe then Fernando would not be so immature. Helmut Head is a lost cause, though. Perhaps some roughage in her diet would do her good.
Jeanne
Seeing JC would be a plus over knowing the end and I am just kicking myself because just about the time I really got into LFMB he was here in town promoting movie and I would have gone like greased lightening if I'd known I'd get so hooked on Fern & Lety's story. He comes here occasionally so I'm going to keep a close eye out for the next time.
The thanks go to Maureen, and I'm not even sure I can go at the time they film but will try my level best! I think it'd sure be worth a try to talk about the bloggers (the recappers really should get FREE tickets, dontcha think?)
deciegirl, I agree that seeing JC in person would be so awesome!
Jeanne
I'll keep you guys advised on the tickets for Cristina show in Miami.I'll be on the telephone next week to attempt to narrow down the day of taping or close to..Any that care to write from our site here, please send email to my business address: MHINTLFREIGHT@YAHOO.COM
This Cristina taping will probably fill up quickly,so I'll stay on top of it to see how many available tickets we can get.Regards.Maureen,Ft. Myers,Florida
Jeanne
He acted so strange I wondered if it was her.
Carrie L.
Loved Fern's gentle little stalking of Lety through the office and the look on his face...it was the equivalent of getting chased around the room, in the fun kind of way ;)
"I love writing, but I'm not any good making up stories" - you have crystallized my thoughts exactly, Julie. I feel the same way about myself. I just content myself to posting.
I was casting about for a new novela to watch, and I didn't like the other nighttime shows. I am recording this one in the afternoon. This show is not as dark and violent as some of the others. I am new to novela land, as I just started watching LFMB on a whim last summer because I heard about the American version and I am studying Spanish. I enjoy the comic tone, but it appears that such style is not the usual.
