La Fea Más Bella #195-196 2/2/11 Lety is back from Acapulco and Fernando is back from the dead.

Capitulo 195.
Read K-Fuego’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

Sorry this is so long. I’ve tried to cover all the important points from the meeting because it establishes the new world order.

Marcia remembers how mean she was to Lety. She’s sure Lety will refuse to help them. Ali tells Marcia how superior she is to Lety, but Mar reminds her that regardless, Fern fell in love with Lety.

A light shines on Fernando's gloom.
Lety enters the board room. Fernando can’t take his eyes off her. But he’s ashamed for what he did, and he’s kept at bay by her coldness. Lety is very nervous to be sitting across from him, especially because he keeps looking at her. He runs out to the washroom to say her name, kiss her picture, and burn off a little excitement. “Mi Lety.”

Guillermo (Gui) wants to promote Mexican cuisine internationally, and he wants Aldo to front the campaign because he’s the perfect man for the job.

No more fighting!
Humberto tells the board to lay aside the rancor and put Conceptos back on its feet (does that mean he’ll stop treating his son like slime?). Ariel asks Lety her price for rescuing the company. Lety can’t answer without her lawyer. Marcia wants Conceptos lawyers there too. Humberto says the lawyers are only there to keep the process legal.

Lety’s position.
Sanchez says that Lety needs to be in charge of the financial management of Conceptos. Lety looks apprehensive and Ariel objects. Fernando smiles because he knows she’s more than capable, and he’s glad she’ll finally have a chance to show her skills and do the class of work she deserves.

Ariel assumes Lety demanded to manage Conceptos in exchange for her cooperation. Lety corrects; she wants to stay as far away as possible. Sanchez corrects Lety; her name is on Conceptos, so she needs to stay involved to protect her interests. Marcia objects; does Sanchez think they’ll try to cheat FI if Lety’s not there? Sanchez stands firm; Lety has every right to supervise and insure that her asset is managed properly. Fern watches proudly as Lety confidently stands up to the board and says she doesn’t want to interact with them.

HE’S BACK!
Ariel says they just have to send reports to Lety periodically. Fernando tells Ariel that FI handles all Conceptos’ financial obligations. Fernando returns from the dead, with his old energy and vigor! How I’ve missed him!!! Lety is as excited as I am to see him alive again, but she quickly remembers that she’s not supposed to feel that way. Fern tells Ariel that as such, the president of FI is more important than that of Conceptos.

Aldo.
Aldo can’t wait to see Lety. Caro tries to tell him that now’s not a good time because she’s in the midst of the storm. Besides, he said he was going to give Lety time to get over Fernando. Aldo doesn’t really care whether it’s a good time or bad time for Lety; he just wants to see her RIGHT NOW. Do I detect a smudge on his ultra-white hat?

The President.
Ariel says they need to select a president for FI who will also head Conceptos (I wonder if he had anyone in mind). Lety quickly asserts that she has the right to make the choice, and she asks Humberto to serve. Marcia agrees. The moment Fernando points out that the president is the one who negotiates with the banks, Humberto refuses vigorously – his shame over their position with the banks is Humberto’s big hot button. I wonder if Fernando derailed him on purpose?

MSM says their position is precarious. The banks saw that their recovery was working. Conceptos must run the business as before, or the banks will refuse to work with them. Lety must continue to have a prominent role in the company. Fernando loves that! Lety refuses to return to the way it was before – that’s intolerable. Fernando knows why, and he hangs his head. MSM says that if Lety is not at the front of FI, the banks will distrust them and might restart their legal action. Lety flatly refuses to be an employee of Conceptos. MSM chuckles. No, her position will change. Ariel refuses to accept that. Humberto invites anyone to propose a better solution, and there’s none. Humberto designates Lety as the new president of Conceptos.

Fallout.
Marcia resigns. Lety tries to stop her. She hasn’t yet accepted the presidency. Marcia says, “I’m no fool. This (both of them staying) would kill us. This is the only way to save the company. As such, you stay. I’ll leave, to keep the promise we made.” This is too much for Lety. She steps out of the meeting too. Teresita whines. They can’t possibly let Marcia quit and give Lety the presidency. Humberto tells her to suck it up.

Salesman of the Year, Round 2.
In the presidencia, Lety tells Humberto she can’t be president in these conditions. She doesn’t want to see Fernando nor Omar. Marcia quit. Ariel and Teresita want her gone. And he (Humberto) probably isn’t wild about the idea, either. Humberto says, “It’s an infierno, but it’s one you and my son created, so you need to fix it. The presidency is not a reward for what you did. No, it’s the price you should pay. If you really want to save the company, do what I ask. Do you hate Conceptos so much? What do you want? What can we do so you’ll accept?”

Capitulo 196.
Read Alma’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Humberto tells Ariel he sent Lety home to lunch so Erasmo would convince her to accept the presidency. Sneaky! But instead Aldo intercepts her outside Conceptos.

2. Fern visits PG. He orders whiskey but changes it to water. He tells PG he couldn’t take his eyes off Lety; she’s so beautiful. He confirms PG’s suspicion that every day, he loves Lety more. But he didn’t know Lety was coming back, and he got back with Marcia. Maybe he was wrong, but he thought that relationship deserved a chance.

3. Lety tells Aldo she doesn’t want to go back to Conceptos, but she feels obligated. Aldo laughs scornfully at the idea of obligation and tells Lety her only obligation is to be happy and free, and enjoy life. (Okay, sign me up for the Aldo-haters club horita mismo!) She’ll feel guilty if she abandons Conceptos. He decides it’s not the time to tell her he loves her.

4. The lounge lady sings, “My pain and fear are finished. I’ll get rid of fear, everything that got in my way, and erase your name.” Fern asks if Lety will let him explain what happened and that he’s hopelessly in love with her. He’s dying because she’s not with him. PG tells Fern he will quit and go far away from what his life was, to know himself. Fern says there is no way he can quit Conceptos.

5. Aldo almost walks into Fern’s car. Aldo remembers Fern as the drunk with the car on the beach.

6. Fern comes up behind Lety in the vortex, and she backs away from him. Lety tells Mama that she’ll accept the presidency because she’d feel awful if she didn’t. Mama says this her chance to show off what she’s made of. Tom tells her she’ll make a great president. Pop is shocked and bursts with pride.

7. Lety names her conditions. She wants her term to be as brief as possible so she needs the conditions that will allow her to succeed. 1. She can to make decisions independently. 2. Fernando (not Don Fernando) does not give her orders. 3. Ariel treats her with respect. 4. Tomás is made an executive. 5. Marcia stays or the deal is off.

8. Humberto the master salesman reminds Marcia how much she loves Conceptos, and he pushes Marcia’s hot button, telling how her father could die in peace because he knew Marcia would fill his shoes in his absence. He tells her Lety’s conditions, and Marcia is sure it’s because Lety wants to take her revenge, but Humberto corrects her. Further, he says it would break her father’s heart if he knew she resigned. That’s the zinger; Marcia agrees to stay.

9. Camil hides behind his hand as he laughs at the HaHA’s, but the camera insists. Sanchez says they must meet at the court in the morning, with legal representatives of both companies, Lety and Fern. I love that little boy smile! Fern looks like he was named to play Tom Sawyer in the school play against Lety’s Becky Thatcher (Tom kisses Becky in the play).

I loved today's meeting! I loved the change in Fernando! I felt like they should've had Grieg's Morning Mood playing in the background. Listen to the song. It's a narrative of dawn.
* The song starts in darkness: Fernando's time since Lety left.
* Then a dim glow in the east: Monday when Fern heard Erasmo say Lety's coming back today.
* Then light spreads over the land and the birds begin their songs: when Lety walks into the conference room.
* Then the sun bursts over the horizon. The music surges! Your heart sings! Fernando answers Ariel with all his old vitality! He's back from the dead.

Glad to see Aldo clean shaven. He looks younger since his chin hair was so gray. I was at first disappointed when he told Lety she shouldn't go back to Conceptos out of obligation. But I guess the walk and his pep talk worked because she chose to go back & it was her choice not an obligation.

Great catch, Paula, on Lety's calling Fernando only by his name and not DON Fernando. She's very composed and in control. I like it.

Fernando was certainly at his boyish best in this episode. He is indeed tan divino. Loved the smiles. The drawing was really cute. Lety through his eyes - quite lovely. Just like Ed's view of her. Do we ever get to see Ed again, I wonder?

Güera

PatA, Thank you so much for today's screenshots. So many of them! I really appreciate what they add to the recaps.

The old board talked about Fern's drawing and the sketch Hippy Ed gave Lety - the one she had on her wall. PatA found a good shot of Ed's sketch, so I posted them for comparison.

The old board also talked about tú and usted. Colombia uses usted for almost everyone, sometimes even spouses, so of course Betty always called Armando usted. In my opinion, part of the reason the Mexican stuck with usted was that it was easier than changing so much of the script or deciding when to switch to tú.

Did anyone notice different artwork in the president's office? The one closest to the window always had the lady that looks like Carolina, but today it was different. Weird!

I agree #196 is the Cap where Fernando is back from the dead. I can see the bit of growth he has made. He kept his mouth shut during the meeting ( loved his drawing Lety so prettily) he knew not to speak. He did speak when it was an intelligent thing to comment on. He stopped "competing" with Ariel. He contained himself when he saw Lety (he was so emotional he had to excuse himself) which shows maturity. He was thinking of Lety's feelings instead of focusing on his own.

Fern now knows he can go to PG at anytime, which I think has become the strength he needs. PG gave him concrete advice this time. They will be together but each has a long road still to travel. He told Fern that Fern will completely change from who he was.

I also loved that Fern has admitted to himself he is still very much in love with Lety and the Marcia thing was a mistake.

The best part of Cap 196?
Fern coming up behind Lety with his "Buenos noches" right in her ear (remember that's a tingly spot for our Lety?) And him walking reeeaaallll close to her without saying another word. I don't know about you all, but I could literally see the electricity shooting between the two of them. Aaahhh, a little bit of the old days.....

Diann

Anybody else? Candidates for "one step forward" points?

Diann, I meant to ask you. Did you hate the Acapulco phase as much as you expected to? I'm sure you didn't like it, but at least was it better than you feared?

Why does Fernando draw Lety? Here’s what I propose. While she was away, he spent every moment thinking about her, and probably imagining how it would be when he saw her again. “I’ll explain. I’ll beg her to forgive me. I’ll hold her. I’ll tell her I was a fool. I’ll make everything right. I’ll gaze at her. I’ll touch her hand and feel that electricity. I’ll make her laugh. I’ll make her see how deeply I love her.” Now he’s three feet away from her, and he can’t do any of those things. This morning he told Omar how hard it was to know where she was and not be able to go see her. He’s just bursting and he doesn’t dare move. That’s why he runs out of the room so he doesn’t explode - to moon over her, to speak her name, and to kiss her picture. So he draws because it’s the only thing he can do. The only way he can hold Lety in his hands and fill his reality with her.

Yes, Paula. The only way Fern can hold Lety is by drawing her picture. All that containment, to me, shows growth.

Question about Acapulco---> Yes, I hated it as much as I thought I would. I can not get past how weaselly Aldo is with everyone, especially our Lety. To me he is a snake, pouncing on a poor little mouse.
If they would have kept the "love" out of the story and just made him a friend like Caro it would have been easier to watch.

I have a question for you Paula, was there an Aldo counterpart in the Colombian show? Did Betty La Fea have Betty coming back as President?

I love these discussions.
Diann

Beautiful explanation, Paula.

btw Thank you for all the time you put in on this and I love your titles.

Güera

Beautiful telenovela. Viva Televisa!

Paula, I liked the explanation on Fern's drawing of Lety. Enjoyed watching him do that.
La Paloma

Yes Diann, the Aldo character is named Michel, but he has a much smaller part. He doesn't come back to the city looking for Betty until the last 10 episodes. At the resort, he doesn't save her from drowning, he doesn't dispense pop philosophy, and he doesn't have hours-long conversations with her. In fact he doesn't show much interest in her until after her makeover (Betty has her big makeover at the resort). While she's at the resort he becomes interested but not head-over-tincans for her. He tries to kiss her once but she pulls away. He does ask her not to go back to the city, just like Aldo. What he does accomplish at the resort is to show Betty that a man can be honestly attracted to her.

One thing that has really spiced up our discussions is the contrast in perceptions about Aldo.

I "simply" want to point out two things we know about him with some certainty because they come from his own lips.

The Philosophy of Aldo.
1. You should never love another more than you love yourself. En mi pueblo, we call that, “Look out for Number One.”
2. He says, “Obligations? HA! Your only obligation is to be happy.” Responsibilities? Commitments? No, no, no. They get in the way of my freedom and happiness.

A huge shout-out to Jaime Camill. His stubtle gestures and looks spoke volumes. Upon seeing Lety again, he realizes how much he loves her. I don't think he would have realized that unless Lety had gone away. I can see growth in him and he held his own and his peace in today's meetings. But, who does he go home with tonight? If he goes home with Marcia, I will question how successful these few steps have been. If he refuses to go there and is willing to be on his own, then I believe he has made the transition and is on the uphill climb. Time will tell.

Thanks Paula. Does any one know who the singer was when Fern went to see PG? I really enjoyed her songs and wander if she is a famous singer in Mexico?

I loved all the Fern smiles and one of my favorite scenes is when he comes right up next to Lety as if he were drinking in her escense.

Aldo is all about Aldo. In his way he is as self absorbed as Fern was in the beginning. Like Fern he grew up rich and spoiled until he got kicked in the teeth by his wife but his core remains the same. It is all about me. I suspect Julieta will not be a fan.

Loved Fern excusing himself and going off to moon over Lety before composing himself and returning to the junta. He certainly did not want to give himself away to super salesman Don H who unlike Teresita knows nothing about his past with Lety and definitely not to the snake Ariel.

One thing about the Marcia Humberto tete a tete struck me as odd. The Villareals were little kids when their parents died so how would her father have had all those plans for her and the company especially since he had a son.

I totally agree on the wonderful job Jaime did in expressing Fernando's feelings and restraint towards Lety.
Also, I find it interesting that as much as Jaime was ad-libbing part of his script, the script itself called for Fernando to criticize the singer saying she had probably forgot her song lyrics. I find that so humorous.

it is also interesting how they changed the part of the script when Lety demanded that Marcia stay, and Humberto asked why... in YSBLF Roberto asks Betty what was that 'agreement' they had and Armando focused his eyes on what Betty would answer like a watchdog. In LFMB Fernando instantly agreed with Lety that it was not the time or place to talk about that. Even if he does not know the details of that 'deal' he wants to support Lety's decisions.

I mean Jaime has the freedom to deviate from the script but the lady singer cannot deviate a little from her song if she needs to? LOL!

i have to give it to Lety, she has got advise from several folks and is doing her best to hold her ground and implement most of that advise and get them, esp Ariel and Fernando, to respect her.

and paula, that was a beautiful explanation of why Fernando draws her. sweet!

Lety started the day, expecting to go to MSM’s office with the HaHA’s, sign some papers, and be done with Conceptos forever. Instead, Humberto asked her to come to Conceptos, so she’d have to see everyone. That alone unsettled her. In Humberto’s office, he had to convince her to keep FI and thus she couldn’t close the door on this chapter. On top of that, she had to address the board. That was almost too much to bear. But that ain’t nothin’! In the board meeting she found out she’d have to be president and see Fern all the time. What a day!

The lounge singer wasn't mentioned in the opening credits, whereas the rest of the singers in this show have been, even the band at Aldo's beach party. Did anyone else think her first song sounded like a José José kind of song? Not that I recognized it specifically, but it was very much in the style of what he used to sing, overstated and overemotional.

Good point about Marcia's dad, decie girl. All I can think is, she was the only one of the three who showed interest in Conceptos, in fact she loved it from the beginning.

Hi all -

I'm excited that tomorrow I'll be able to watch the show on East coast time - I fly home tonight! :) As far as today's eps...

- Loved the moment with Fern walking behind Lety...and then her awkward response. I think I would have done the same thing she did...ha great chemistry Vale and Camil have together!

- The moment where Fern was so busy on his phone as he drove off that he missed Lety & Aldo together. I wonder what his reaction would have been if he'd seen her with another man so soon? I was SCREAMING at him to turn around during this scene - it always seems to be the case with him...

- Did anyone notice his reaction to Tomas Mora's name? he's still a bit jealous and he let it show in the meeting for a few mins...I found that satisfying...

I agree with whomever said it earlier - the true test for me will be who Fern goes home with tonight...

Can't wait for tomorrow's meeting to sign the papers...I wonder if Lety/Fern will actually get to talk to each other then.

- One note in defense of Aldo - yes he may have a devil may care attitude, but I think that if he were totally selfish he would have given Lety the box and told her he loved her. I felt he redeemed himself when he told her today is all about you when she asked him what his big news was. Did anyone else see it that way? I don't see the negative side of him just yet, but then again I haven't seen the entire series yet either. Although that may change since I'll have my DVD's in hand tomorrow!! YAY.

as always I enjoy the analysis and commentary on this board. Thank you all for the passion and input! I always find a new perspective here.

I've always loved that particular Grieg selection and think it's a perfect choice for the meeting. Nice job on selecting the perfect theme song.

I like the analysis of why Fern was drawing Lety's picture. It's amazingly similar to Ed's picture although Fern's version looks a bit more innocent and child-like. I wonder how it will look if he draws her again four weeks from now?

I will love watching Ariel forced to treat Lety with respect.

I certainly don't think Aldo is mean - especially not intentionally so. But it does seem to be a real effort for him (like Fernando, before) to put Lety's needs before his own, despite repeated reminders from Caro to be considerate of Lety's situation.

This suggests to me that Aldo might be more focused on the pursuit of Lety than on Lety herself.

For the fun of it, I looked up Aldo (Juan Soler) and he was a rugby player and a model! He is from Argentina, as is his wife. If you go to Google Images and type in his name you will see some really beautiful pics, especially of him, with dark hair! I don't know how to post a photo here!
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b310/mprmanny/LFMBella/Juan20Soler1.jpg

Marie, Juan S has been a galan for a long time so I was actually surprised that during those scenes in Aca he let that gray show in his scruffy beard. A lot of aging galans in his age bracket go to great lengths to keep looking a young as possible since many of them don't relish the idea of being relegated to Fatherly roles.

I alway found Aldo shallow and he never grew on me. By the end I actively loathed him but will say his appearance sets up some hilarious Fern and Omar scenes.

Decigirl,
You had to wait until the END to loathe Aldo???

I loathe him already!!! LOL

Diann

I liked when Sanchez said FI & Conceptos had to work together, and laced his fingers. Fern really liked that!

Did anyone notice that Lety was fairly confident when she left Conceptos for lunch, but she became needy and dependent as she was talking with Aldo?

That's funny - I never even realized that was gray in Aldo's beard. He's pretty fair, so I just thought that he had a pale beard (or maybe he was a little sun-bleached!).

Paula, I too noticed Fernando's happy grin when Sanchez said the two companies would have to work hand in hand...
