La Fea Más Bella #178 1/1/07 The Happy New Year Episode

Fern thanks Omar profusely for arranging a date with Lety. He picks him up and hugs him. Fern even tells Omar that he is officially forgiven for his stupidity. Fern rushes out of the office like a kid running after an ice cream truck. Once alone, Omar says that Fern is going to kill him when he finds out his date is not with Lety, but with Omar’s little pay-for-play friend, Paulina. He remarks that his life relies on whether Paulina is able to make Fern happy.

Mama T gives Marcia advice on her love life. Marcia is distraught about the chemistry that must have brought Fern and Lety together. Mama T actually agrees that there must have been chemistry between the two, but adds that love is not just physical attraction; there must also be solidarity. Case in point: Lety betrayed Fern and disappeared, which does not show solidarity. Marcia says that she understands why Lety would do that, since she must be very hurt over what Fern did to her. Besides, she thinks that when Lety shows up to sign the papers, she will not just sign and then disappear. Fern would not let that happen, he will try to win her back. Likewise, she thinks Lety may try to win Fern back. In any case, Mama T tells Marcia not to give up and to fight for her man.

On the beach Aldo tells Lety he had problems with his dad because he wanted to be an engineer, but Aldo wanted to be a chef. He was basically disinherited, and says that’s ok because money is overrated. His mom died when he was a teenager, but he attributed his kitchen skills to her. Lety admires him for going after his dreams. She says she could never erase her parents form her life the way he has done with his dad. She encourages him to seek his dad out. She asks if that has something to do with Aldo’s reaction over the smashed minivan. Aldo flashes back to the woman lying dead in the passenger side. He tells Lety that’s a story for another day. He wants to go find Carolina so they can have some fun.

Fern goes to the bar Omar sent him to. He looks around for Lety. He tells the bartender he is looking for a very pretty woman, a short one with a braid, braces, and a dress that goes from here to there (he moves his hand from his chin to his feet to indicate the length of her dress). He is very giddy and stumbles over his words. He shows the bartender Lety’s picture, he pull back bug-eyed. Fern sneers and says the picture was taken with a fish-eye camera. Paulina is watching him from a couch and talks to Omar on the phone. She says Fern is a bon-bon (marshmallow). She says she will pretend to meet Fern accidentally. Paulina goes over to Fern and invites him to have a drink with her. Fern is not interested. He’s waiting for someone important. She cuddles up to him and purrs like a kitten but he is very uncomfortable with her proximity and pushes her away. Obviously he very concerned that Lety will walk in at any moment and see him with the cuddle-puss. She says they can go to a dark corner and the bartender can let them know if his date shows up.

Alicia goes into Marcia’s office for the gossip. Marcia explains why Tomas came to the board meeting in Lety’s place. Alicia is excited at the thought of Tomas squirming in the hot seat. She is disgusted that he had the nerve to show up.

It’s evening somewhere on the Acapulco hotel grounds, and Caro and Alex tell the bellezas that they have the evening off. The girls are very excited.

In the bar, Fern is talking Paulina’s ear off, telling her all about Lety, even showing her how Lety laughs. Paulina says she will die of boredom. He says she disappeared but luckily, his friend Omar… Suddenly, he realizes that this is a set-up. He asks Pau if she happens to know Omar Carvajal. She raises her eyebrows in a “who, me?” fashion.

Caro and the bellezas are trying to decide what to do with their night off. Lety runs up to Caro. Carolina apologizes to Carolina for being pushy. Lety tells Carolina that she appreciates everything she did to help her. Lety tells Caro that the lynch mob… that is, the board over at Conceptos have demanded that she return immediately, however, Lety has decided not to go. Aldo runs up and tells them that they, bellezas and all, are invited to a big party on the beach. He whistles, and instantaneously, lights go on on the beach, and a band starts playing. Caro can’t believe this is the same Aldo she knows. As they walk toward the beach, Alex pulls Aldo back and says that he was able to arrange everything for the beach party just as Aldo asked, but he says the shindig cost a pretty penny. Aldo does not seem worried.

Pau admits that Omar set up their meeting, and she says she knows that he hasn’t been with a woman in a long time. Fern is surprised that this complete stranger knows this about him. Pau says she is a specialist in afflictions of love and can cure what ails him. She continues with the cuddle–puss act.

Aldo and Caro go for a walk, and he tells her that he wants to help Lety. Besides, he has a great time with her. He says he cares about her (he says “quiero” which could mean “want” or “love” or “care about”… in this case, it sounds like he means the latter). Caro approves, and says he’s in charge of making sure Lety has a good time at this party.

Fern is taking many shots of whiskey to deal with his encounter with Pau. She tells him he needs to slow down. She puckers up for a kiss. He says ok, but take out his picture of Lety and hold it behind Pau’s shoulder. He asks her to really, really pucker up (the way Lety does). He lets Pau kiss him, though he’s not really kissing back, he’s just looking at the picture of Lety. He makes uncomfortable faces reminiscent of the ones he made when he first kissed Lety.

Tomas bids Julieta goodnight and leaves. Julieta prays to St Jude (patron, saint of lost causes) to help Lety. She asks “Lety, what did you get yourself into?”

Lety tells Aldo she’s embarrassed to dance, even though she loves music.

Marcia asks Alicia if Fern is still in his office. She says he left long ago. Marcia needs to go find him to talk. Alicia wants a lift. Marcia gives her cab money instead. She says she is not in the mood for any of Alicia’s pep talks.

At the beach, Aldo and Lety have a glass of wine. They watch the bonfire. Aldo says that the fire speaks to him. Lety agrees; since fire has tongues, then it must talk! A really great band plays and the bellezas dance.

Pau sees that Fern is looking at Lety’s picture while she kisses him. She calls Lety a little gargoyle and Fern explodes. They argue and she takes off. He says that Pau needs to look in a mirror to see a little gargoyle.

Omar is relaxing at home with a girl in his bathrobe. He talks about marriage but as soon as she asks “really?” he backs down. Pau calls him and tells him about Fern and his picture. She hangs up on him. He’s not sure whether to laugh or cry.

Fernando goes back to another bar. He runs into Marcia. She wants to know what will happen if Lety doesn’t come back, or if she comes back and doesn’t want Fern back.

Lety asks what love means to him. He says love is when you love someone, not just for their virtues, but also for their defects and quirks.

Cut to Marcia asking what it takes for Fern to fall in love with a woman.

Cut to Aldo telling Lety, “I don’t need anything special, I just need he to be a woman like you.”

Cut to Marcia telling Fern “because, frankly, I don’t understand your feelings for Lety, and not just physically.”

Aldo says people think they fall in love with physical beauty, but the truth is that one falls in love with what is projected by a look, by a smile. And real love is given without expecting anything back. He goes on but what I really noticed is how beautiful his Argentine accent comes across here. Lety begins to look at him dreamily. She asks him if everything he is saying is what the fire is telling him. He says yes.

Marcia asks what he expects from Lety, who pretends to be fragile and goody-goody, but is willing to get involved with her boss who is about to be married to someone else. She goes on to list how Lety betrayed him in front of the board, how she handed over all her Carvajalmarks to Marcia, and how she has now sent Tomas in her place. Fern defends Lety exactly the way Marcia defended Lety to Mama T earlier; Lety did it because she is hurt. Marcia says that unlike her, Lety is not willing to stick with him through good and bad. Boy, sign this girl up for a self-esteem class.

Aldo tells Lety that he doesn’t know how she could be in love with Fernando. He says Fernando does not deserve her love. Also looks pensive for a second, then smiles and changes the subject. She invites Aldo to dance. Also smiles back.

Marcia says she never would have betrayed him the way Lety did. She adds, “Me compadezco de ti” (I feel sorry for you) and leaves.

Happy new year, fellow fea-watchers! Have a wonderful "007"!

Gracias Alma for blogging tonight after New Year festivities!!!

Great recap, it was a wonderful episode. Fern was utterly adorable in the bar describing Lety to the bartender, and nervously evading that hussy. He is the funniest actor in the whole novela, it's too bad he has to spend so much time crying!

I still like Aldo.

I love Fernando.

Ha. Marcia feels sorry for Fernando? I feel sorry for Marcia. Staying with a man who doesn't love you isn't loyalty - it's laziness. She could be out there making some shallow guy happy instead of making Fern's life miserable.

Thanks so much for the recap, Alma. I missed this episode due to family New Years celebrations and was so happy to know I could come in and catch up.

Sorry to have missed the Fernando bar scene. That must have been funny. Fernando's facial expressions are priceless. He is such a great actor. Glad Fernando didn't fall for the Omar set-up.

Connie

Thanks, Alma, for the terrific recap!

After tonight, I like Aldo way better. I liked his explanation of what true love is, and the back-and-forth contrast between his very lovely explanation and Marcia's harping that Fern couldn't really love that woman, Aldo's words were more powerful. At the end, when Lety jumped up to dance, I wondered if Aldo smiled at her because now she is changing the subject so she doesn't have to respond.

Fern looks just as lovely up close as he does at a distance. (Jaime Camil can be seen on camera from any distance and still look like a Greek god). Even with his natural beauty, Fern has the funniest rubber face; when he was kissing Paulina his eyes were crossing and his face was contorting. I laughed so hard last night several times my husband came in from the office down the hall and demanded to know what was so funny (so, I stopped the on-demand button and played it back, interpreting for him).

I hadn't realized that Argentinian accents were different from others, but of course that would be the case as is true all over the US and English speaking world. I understand Aldo better than some of the others. That must be why.

Speaking of understanding, I came downstairs Saturday morning and was very exctied to tell my husband that I had actually dreamed in Spanish, and it was almost fluent for a short time as I was dreaming and conversing. Hubby: "you know what that means, don't you?" Me: "no, what?" Hubby: "it means you're watching way too much television." So much for thinking my Spanish is improving.

So, Paulina was indeed a "pay for play" friend. That figures, since Omar set it up.

Cheers, everyone!

Jeanne

If there was no Fern I would want Lety to be with Aldo. But there is, so...

That was SO adorable when he was describing Lety to the bartender and that girl (I forget her name).

Will SOMEONE tell me how to get subtitles? I want to know how. :(

I hate Marcia even more becuase she was making Fern cry yet again. I was amazed at how quickly he knew that Omar had set him up. Ha, hope he gets him back!

-Jen

Happy New Year to all!

Jen, it depends on what kind of television and cable system you have. If you have a television with it in the menu, you need to open the menu and search until you find closed captions and turn it to CC1, making sure that you "enable" it any other place on the television set menu you need to. Some televisions, however, have the closed captions right on the remote marked as "CC" and then make sure it is on CC1.....if you want Spanish captions. I think it was Julie who told us how to use CC2 or CC3 to get English for other programs?

If you have Cox cable, and perhaps others, you also may need to enable captions in the cable box, which can be found under "language" on the cable box menu. Turn the analog captions to CC1 and the digital to "primary" or "automatic." I think mine work best for all channels on "automatic" for digital, especially HDTV.

Jeanne

Subtitles - you know, I should do a post someday about subtitles and the SAP audio channel. (SAP is irrelevant with respect to Univision as far as I know, but it might be interesting to people wanting to learn Spanish.)

The subtitles for these shows are in Spanish, so if you are hoping for English subtitles, forget it. However, IF your TV supports captions (it won't if it's an older TV), and IF your local (or semi-local) Univision station carries them and they don't get garbled between the local station, the cable company, and your TV, you should be able to get to them via your TV's Menu button (you may have to hunt thru the menus to find them). Better yet, check your TV's manual, or get the TV model number and search online for a manual.

Depending on your TV, you may have up to five choices: Off, Caption1, Caption2, Text1, and Text2. The Text ones aren't used much and I'm not even sure what they're for. Caption1 is what you want. It will give you English captions on English shows, and Spanish captions on Spanish shows.

Caption2, if available, may provide Spanish or other language captions on a handful of English shows. Again, this may depend on your local station. You'll still need to switch back to Caption1 to get your Spanish captions on Univision.

Your TV may also have a Second Audio Program (SAP) audio channel. This will enable you to hear Spanish, descriptive audio for the blind, or rarely some other language, IF the show has it and IF your local station carries it and IF your cable station includes it.

Both the availability of captions and the SAP channel vary VERY widely. I get SAP Spanish for Ugly Betty on the Providence ABC station, but not on the Boston ABC station; the show does not seem to have Spanish captions on either channel. On the other hand, Boston Legal has Spanish captions but no SAP (that I know of).

Sorry, on that last part I meant to say: the availability of Captions2 varies widely. Captions1 is just about everywhere, and I believe local stations and cable companies in the US are required to carry captions on most shows.

Jen, one more thought--if your television is older than July 1, 1993, you may be out of luck. Caption chips were only mandated in US-sold televisions after that date.

j

That's right, Julie, the more recent captioning legislation and FCC regs require a specific number of hours per week to be captioned by each network, and virtually all prime time and news must be captioned. Most networks comply even with non-mandated captioning.

There are newer mandates, however, for HDTV service and for Spanish language programming. They have a phase-in period at the moment.

Doesn't it seem that Teresa can hardly talk because her face has been lifted too many times and the skin is too tight? I used to like her but now she makes me sick. I also wish Saimon and PM would just disappear, maybe they could elope and move to Egypt, so long as we don't have to watch their simpering anymore. And yes, I think Jaime is the best looking guy I have ever seen!

Here is a closed caption fact sheet from the FCC, for anyone who is interested. I apologize that I don't know how to make it a click link, but you can cut and paste.

http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/closedcaption.html

Jeanne

Thanks, Jeanne! I forgot we had someone here that would know so much about captions. I shall defer to your expertise!

Teresita's face - I don't know what to think, but I assume the helmet hair with the thick bangs is covering her forehead for a reason. When you can see a person's forehead and it doesn't scrunch a little when they scowl, it looks weird. (Unfortunately, bangs are probably not an option for Marcia because they would look even worse.)

I loved Fernando in the bar with the floozie! I thought maybe she was a friend of Omar's, kind of a female Omar? It seemed she enjoyed the hunt and capture.
I really don't like the way Lety seems to be falling for Aldo. I want to yell, "Think Lety think and remember Fernando!"
Yes, Fernando is the most gorgeous!I love his eyes, his mouth, his face, his body!
Aldo is very nice but I get the feeling there is a dark past???
Thanks so much for the recap!

Carrie L.

Very touching that scene in the bar. I thought it very revealing that Fern describerd her as beautiful. It goes to show not that love is blind, but that he is able to see below the skin something that the harpy, cement for brains and the helmet head are totally incapable of doing. I just hope that the constant blabbing about Lety's betrayal doesn't weaken Fern's resolve to find her and have her with him.

I sure wouldn't want to be Omar. When Fern headed to the second bar I was so hoping he had been headed for Omar's to beat the c**p out of him. I live in hope.

How long do you think it will take for it to dawn on Julieta that she might be able to find all of the info she is looking for (concerning Lety and Fernando) in the little DIARY that Lety left behind when she left for Acapulco???

Don't know if this has been suggested, but I suspect Teresita's hair has a wig.

The captions are very helpful for learning Spanish -- I wish I'd thought to use them during the first few telenovelas I watched.

I want to marry Fernando. His character is so loveable. And he is flat-out gorgeous. (And can sing, too!)

A great description of Omar from esmas: "incansable mujeriego" HAH!

I think a wig has been suggested... I have no idea. Searching Google Images for "julissa telenovela" (without the quotes) found me these other pictures, which may or may not include wigs.

I can't help thinking that how can Aldo the Guru be a world famous chef when he never spends anytime in the kitchen. Even the greatest chefs in the world spend literally hours in the kitchen everyday. All Aldo seems to do is fish, lie around on the beach and pontificate at every chance. He must be on permanent vacation LOL

Speaking of Aldo exactly what do we really know about the guy? He is apparently from a rich family, lost his mother in his teens, doesn't speak to his father. He appears to have either been responsible for the death of the blonde in the car or had a relationship with her. He once said he knew what it was to be betrayed and also that he loved someone more than himself. He still remains a bit of a mystery and I have to admit I don't particularly trust him.

Could Teresita's speech problem be related to dentures? I thought she was having a hard time opening her mouth because of denture glue.
Lety and Fernando share a chemistry that makes the show successful. I haven't sensed the same chemistry between Lety and Aldo.

Maybe Julissa had trouble getting the words out because she was aghast at the ugly, stupid things her character had to say.

I just realized there's lots of dentistry involved in this show. Teresita's possible dentures, Lety's braces, Aldo's absolutely dazzling veneers or whatever. True, Aldo's never in the kitchen, but this is telenovela land, where a willing suspension of disbelief is required to cross the boundary.

Jeez..You folks are picking apart these characters like plucking a chicken..I thought I was rough on them, but can't hold a candle to some others here..Go get 'em..Ha.. Maureen

I believe Paulina called Fern a "bombon" (handsome man), not a marshmellow, ha-ha......Jason

So, Melinama, would that phrase mean insatiable womanizer? Omar is that, for sure.

Ah, Julie, you're the one who taught me what CC2 does nowadays. I didn't realize that SAP provides audiodescription, either. That's something I thank you for pointing out since I really better know that! (blush).

Jeanne

Oops! Thanks for cathing that, Jason. To begin with, I mispelled "bombon." And since that means chocolate or some other sweet treat -- which Fern definitely is -- it didn't occur to me to explain why Fern is a bombon. Sorry! .. and yum!

Yes,yes Fern is indeed the best kind of bon bon. Delicious to look at in every way.
I wish I had a Fern tee shirt to wear to keep him nearby on weekends when I'm having La Fea withdrawal.
I don't think mama T's hair is a wig. To me she just looks like someone with thinner hair who has it sprayed immobile. She is definitely the Marcia of the future.

Carrie L.

I think that Fern is cool, but not because of the way he looks but because of the way he acts. (as fern) -he has the cutest puppy eyes!- anyway I started thinking that Aldo and Lety made a good couple. (not any more though because) I don't like the way Aldo explains life to Lety as a 'nature dream'. When Fern and Lety are together they are always up to something.

Talk about a laugh out loud episode. It showcased all of Jaime Camil's best traits. No wonder we all suffer from Fernatiscism. He's a comic genius, truly, and gorgeous to boot. Too bad PM is taken already as a nickname because it would be a good one for him except it would mean "Perfect Man." I'm getting ready to watch again, it was so much fun (minus Aldo) who I will be FFing through. Sandy

P.S. Thanks Alma and Happy New Year to all.

And if Mrs Mendiola isnt wearing a wig, by boobs are as big as Alicia's.

P.S.S. that should be MY boobs, not BY. Lo siento.

Just have to say that I love the complete 180 with Fernando holding up Lety's picture while kissing another. It wasn't that long ago he needed whiskey and photo inspiration to kiss Lety. Oh, how far he has fallen in love.

I got the biggest kick out of his description of Lety to the bartender. I especially loved him saying that she always wears sweaters and never sweats.

Oh yeah, and Omar is a sleaze for hiring a call girl. I do like him, but once Fer has finished his growth and maturity it will be Omar's turn.

Happy New Year to my fellow Fea fans, and always, thanks to our wonderful recappers for the work you do. It is always appreciated.

I meant Omar's turn for maturing, not his turn with the call girl. Just seemed like that paragraph could be misconstrued.....or I just have a pervy mind.
