La Fea Más Bella #177-178 1/20/11 Everybody's interpretation of love.

Capitulo 177.
Read Julie’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

Everybody's talking about love today.

  • Julieta realizes Lety loves Fernando.
  • Marcia tells Teresita that Fernando loves Lety.
  • Teresita gives her definition of love.
  • Omar thinks that the cure for a broken heart is a callgirl.
  • Fernando tells four people that he loves Lety (Bartender 1, Paulina, Bartender 2, Taxista).
  • Marcia asks Fernando what makes him fall in love with a woman.
  • Marcia shows her "love" by crushing Fernando into even finer powder. She implies that Lety's actions demonstrate that Lety doesn't love Fern, while her own actions demonstrate that she does.
  • Lety asks Aldo what love means to him, and he tells her.
  • Aldo tries to weaken Lety's love for Fernando by listing how terrible he is.

1. MamaJ wonders why Lety did dirty business. She realizes Lety fell in love with Fernando.

2. Marcia tells MamaT that Fern fell in love with Lety, and Marcia knows she’s lost. MamaT tells her not to give up. Lety is NOTHING compared to Marcia, Fern had temporary insanity, and if he sees Lety again he’ll come to his senses.

3. Omar tells Fern he should spend his energy recovering Conceptos. Fern says he can’t think of anything until he resolves the Lety matter. Omar warns she’s going to come back transformed.

4. Lety refuses to let the hairdresser do anything. She has a meltdown, remembering the green nightmare. She Aldo tells Caro Lety is too fragile right now, and Caro shouldn’t have pressured her.

5. Tom tells Lety the papers were inadequate. The board is furious and Fern begged Lety to call him. She’s refuses to jump for the board; they need to respect her. If Fern is distressed, that’s his problem.

6. Omar hires a honey to tempt Fern back into his old life. He says, “Ay, Fernando, tonight you’ll forget all about your gargolita, I assure you.”

7. Aldo gives Lety a broken shell. She feels like he understands her. He says Caro wants to help her, but he likes her just as she is with her hurts and pains. Aldo says she thinks she’s fea so that’s what she projects. It’s her identity and she’s afraid to change because she won’t know who she is.

8. Lety asks Aldo why the wreck upset him so much, and he refuses to answer. She says his pop philosophy is a lie because he’s not happy either. He likes that she stands up to him like that.

9. MamaJ asks Tom what Fern did to Lety. Tom can’t answer; it’s too personal.

10. Omar says he has a surprise for Fern. Something he lost some time ago and misses very much. Fern concludes it’s Lety and Omar doesn’t argue.

Capitulo 178.
Read Alma’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Fernando thinks it strange that Lety would agree to meet him at a hotel. But he’s thrilled and he forgives Omar for all the stupid things he’s done.

2. Marcia tells MamaT that if Lety comes back to sign the papers, Fern won’t let her go and Lety might try to win him back too. MamaT says Marcia should fight for her man.

3. Aldo tells Lety that he renounced his family because his father insisted that he become an engineer. His mother died when he was an adolescent. He’s unwilling to tell Lety what upset him today.

4. Fern looks for Lety in the hotel bar, and he describes her to the bartender. Paulina the working girl starts working him but all he wants to talk about is Lety. He says his friend located her and set up this date, then her realizes Omar duped him.

5. Lety and Caro mutually apologize for what happened at the hairdresser. Lety says the board ordered her to attend the meeting tomorrow, but she won’t go. Aldo invites everyone to his fiesta for Lety.

6. Fern lets Paulina kiss him while he looks at Lety’s photo, but it’s not working. She discovers the photo and leaves. Fern says her kisses don’t have the magic of Lety’s.

  .

Pardon me, I’m going to take a little space to detail Marcia’s two usual rants, so in the future I can just refer to them by name and not repeat myself every time Marcia does (remember “Juan’s Lines” and “Sofia’s Lines”?).
7. Marcia asks Fern what he’ll do if Lety doesn’t come back or doesn’t want him. Fern’s unwilling to discuss it. She asks him what traits make him fall in love with a woman. She gives what I will hereafter call “The Marcia Taunt”: Lety delivered his head to the committee; she gave Marcia his cards and letter, the proof of his treachery (Marcia leaves out the part about calling Security); she sends a stand-in when he asks her to meet with the board; and she acts like she doesn’t feel anything for Fernando (that last one was a dagger to the heart). He’s in water up to his neck and Lety left him. Fern says he hurt Lety, but Marcia counters with what I will hereafter call “The Marcia Pitch”: even though he hurt her, she’ll always stand by her man (right beside Tammy Wynette). She could never abandon him like Lety did.

8. Aldo says love means being able to give up everything for love, and to love the other person’s defects and weaknesses. He says a man feels protected and supported with a woman like her.

9. Aldo must’ve taken lessons from Marcia. What shall we call this? “The Aldo Accusation”? He tells Lety, “I know how much you love Fernando, but he doesn’t deserve you. He deceived you and used you. You gave him all your love and he didn’t give any back. You know how to love and he doesn’t.” To change the subject, she asks him to dance.

Too bad the band doesn’t play Save the Last Dance for Me. (Laugh and sing, but while we’re apart, don’t give your heart to anyone.)

Here's what I don't get: The big concern that Lety skipped town because she plans to keep Conceptos. (As if anyone would steal a company that's so deep in debt. Not that it's stealing, anyway, if you already have a lien on the company!)

If I'm not mistaken, Lety could have cashed in on the embargo months ago. The tipsy abogados were urging her and Tomas to go ahead with the seizure. They could have signed off on it even before Lety's birthday party, before she and Fern took that fateful trip to the hotel.

Instead, she gave the Mendiolas and Villaroels the car and all the paperwork for Filmo-Imagen. Granted that ended up not being adequate to hand the company over completely, but why aren't they recognizing it as a show of good faith? She had no reason to do it otherwise. She didn't need to resort to covert measures to take it.

As for her "suspicious" trip out of town, and the "suspicious" timing of that trip, I just have to ask, what is Marcia smoking? They practically ran Lety out of there on a rail. Especially Marcia.

As for Ariel, I hope someone gives him some shirts with regular button cuffs. Maybe then he will stop fiddling with his cufflinks. It was just an interesting little schtick for the character at first, but now he's doing it ALL the time and I want to strap them down with duct tape!!

Yes Julie, there are a few too many stock mannerisms that all drive me crazy -- Ariel's cuff links, Lopez' yucky spit shine of his bald head , Alicia's hair stroking....

Neat replay of Fernando's need to use a photo to inspire a kiss. He was so cute when he described the muy bonita woman he was meeting and his description included the braid, the braces, the eye tic, the mustache... all of which are now endearing instead of offputting. I liked it yesterday when both Fernando and Aldo were thinking fondly of Lety and it was her silly laugh which made both of them smile.

I like the parallel scenes -- one of the things I loved in Dinero -- Those parallel conversations between Aldo & Lety and Fern & Marcia were interesting on a couple of levels.

Aldo hit the nail on the head when he said that a man feels protected and loved by someone like Lety. That's Fernando to a T. Lety's love is a comfort and a shelter to him and now she's no longer there he is lost. He is indeed like the little boy who has lost his blankie and cannot sleep until he finds it. Fernando will hit rock bottom when he finally arrives in Acapulco and sees Lety with Aldo. He will see that another man could do for her what he could not and even though he will be jealous, he'll find that his love for Lety has become big enough to give her room to be with Aldo. He'll hurt like he's never hurt before. Conceptos was always something he could count on to make him feel like someone and then Lety came and did the same. Now Fernando is finding Conceptos can't help him anymore and Lety won't. He's going to have to look deep inside of himself, make the necessary changes, and be reborn into a mature man that loves with a strength and a purity. It's this type of love that will yearn for Lety but also be willing to let her go if indeed her happiness is with Aldo.

Your prediction seems spot on to me. Fernando has to learn to step back and let Lety be happy. I still expect that his sacrifice won't be forever and that Lety will end up with him. BUT I am bothered by that Marcia/Fernando wedding kiss in the opening credits. I hope it doesn't go that far. This show is full of dream sequences. I hope that this is another.

I just posted another photo. Thank you PatA!

I must stay that Aldo does have a lot going for him personality wise but he has a kind heart. He is the healing balm that Lety needs right now. Though he seems somewhat inspid compared to Fernando's over-the-top personality, he certainly is easy on the eyes. Fernando's expressions when Paulina was attacking him at the bar were priceless. That man can say more with his face than he can with his words.

Paula, I really appriciated your breakdown of the Marcia rants and the Aldo acusations. Marcia just doesn't get it does she.

I loved Ferns description of Lety to the bar tender.

I'm not done watching yet but I want to say the Fernando's description of Lety to the bartender is hilarious! Well done Camil. Also hilarious that he couldn't stop blabbing about Lety to Paulina; how typical of someone who has been recently dumped. And definitely a nice twist having to use Lety's picture to kiss the babe.

Hey Pata, great screen shots today. I loved the one of Fern staring at Lety's picture. He doesn't even care that it's not a good one of her.

Thanks for the recaps everyone. I'm glad Lety isn't going back to the boardroom. Why should she? As others pointed out they cruelly and spitefully showed her the door.

Paula, great idea for saving time in the future. Just say "Marcia's rant" or "Aldo's accusation" and we'll be done with it.

I think we all agree. The way Camil uses his body is spectacular. You'll see some great examples of that in Friday's shows. One to watch for, and this is no spoiler. When he's in the taxi and all you see is his hand. That one hand expresses more than many actors' entire face and body.

Don't you just love it? "Leave and never come back! Don't you dare show your face here ever again." Two days later: "Why is she hiding? How dare she? It proves that she's stealing the company!"

Sylvia, we're lucky. We can just say, "Play Marcia's Rant." I'll bet Fern wishes that worked for him. Picture it. Marcia enters la presidencia. She glares at him and says those dreaded two little words, "Marcia's Rant." She leaves.

Wasn't it refreshing to see Fernando so happy, even though it was short lived?

The opening credits. Two points. 1. Remember the previous opening credits? Many scenes in there never appeared in the actual show. 2. Notice, the two figures on the beach, once it's Fernando and Lety and he kisses her. You can see the curly hair. Then it's Aldo and Lety.

Barbara! That's it! Aldo the Insipid! Right alongs with Omar the Imbicile!

And the stock mannerism I hate? That Sara puts "de altura" into every sentence, and Lola puts "nunca acaba" into every sentence. Ya, BASTA!

I'm surprised that nobody commented that Lety refused the makeover. I shouldn't be surprised - on this board we're putting all our attention on Lety's internal transformation.

I LIKE that she didn't get a makeover. Okay, maybe a little. She often goes without a sweater, and sometimes without opaque stockings. Her dresses are lighter, and she let Caro buy her a few new dresses. But that's all.

In the Colombian, she got the first steps of a makeover at this point. Michel (the Aldo character, but different) met her BEFORE the changes, but he didn't show any interest in her until AFTER she had changed her look some. That always bothered me. Like, he appreciated her inner beauty, but not until prettied up the outer shell.

Good points everyone. I really have to say that I was lmao during Fernando's description of Lety at the bar and then again when he was holding the pic up to kiss Paulina. That was HILARIOUS and I didn't even understand all of the dialogue, but did I hear him say "the fish eye lens makes her look funny?" or something like that when he was defending Lety's picture to the bartender? Just pure comic genius - I really have a lot of respect for Jaime's talents - he commits and goes with it.

The other thing that struck me about the last scenes between Fern and Marcia is that had her standing behind him and talking over his shoulder - that image reminded me of the image of a little devil on someone's shoulder whispering in their ear to do bad things...

I agree - the Lety refusal to get the makeover didn't really surprise me although I was excited of the thought of her doing it. I guess that will happen much later on down the road for her. I'm ok with it as long as she works on her insides first. I think if she got a makeover now she'd probably become a pretty terrible person anyway. It's just my opinion, but that sometimes happens to the ugly ducklings who grow into swans when they don't have a good sense of themselves...

One final comment - I really can't stand Fern's mom. She really just seems to have little to no redeeming qualities imho. It drives me crazy to see her giving such bad advice to Marcia without even talking to her son to see what he's feeling. Such a shame...

Fern and Omar might think fondly of Lety's laugh but Lety and her mom's laugh drive me nuts but that's just me. Had to mention it since there seem to be a lot of little irritants in this otherwise wonderful novela.

Just read the original re-caps (I was close on the fish remarks from Fern).

I think some of Lety's facial ticks and sour expressions drive me crazy most of all. I know it's a part of her "charm" but sometimes I'm like STOP it already.

Marcia asks Fern what a woman needs to have, for him to fall in love with her. Call it hunch, I suspect that something NOT on the list is, “She constantly reminds me what a fool and a failure I am, she taunts me to the point of tears, and she spits on the name of the only thing I hold holy.” Yeah, that probably doesn’t add points to his love-meter.

Although I liked/bought into the scenes between marcela and Armando in YSBLF more than Marcia and Fernando here (granted, Jaime Camil is doing a great job portraying the broken hearted man in him), I like what is going on in Acapulco more (find it more realistic) than what happened in Cartagena in YSBLF. Let me explain myself... I know Lety and Betty both needed to reconstruct their insides, but I agree with the approach in LFMB that it needed to begin with revamping Lety's self-image even before any outside changes happened. That coupled with the fact that both Aldo and Carolina are more approachable since they have also shared their own emotional baggage, makes me like what is going on in Acapulco better. I always thought there was a little hole in that I found it hard for someone like Catalina to identify with Betty's struggle in YSBLF. Since Catalina always seemed so 'perfect' and so 'mature' with no flaws or weaknesses or baggage from the past (other than the shared failed marriages... but still... )

I totally agree, guera... the parallel scenes at the acapulco beach (positive motivation) and in Conceptos (negative criticism) were great to watch. I am referring to the content, separate from my own opinion that as far as acting performance, I still stand in that Natalia and Jorge were masterful in those scenes in YSBLF.

I agree that Marcia talking to Fernando from behind him makes it look like she is the little devil on his shoulder... in YSBLF they were not like that... At first Marcela came in the office Armando was behind the desk and then they sat side by side on the sofa.
I also agree that in YSBLF Michel seemed to be interested in getting to know Betty better only after her initial makeover step...
