La Fea Más Bella #181 1/4/07 in which Fernando espouses Buddhism and Lety becomes a multi-millionaire

Ariel is gloating and insufferable, asking Fern when he'll be clearing out. Fern says he'll stay till there's a new elected president and his dad has stepped down from interim command, and will stay in his former office "even though it hurts you because YOU want it." Ariel says something about "Japanese ... honor" - and suggests "hara-kiri" (ritual suicide). He leaves in a huff, the lawyers follow, Fern and Omar bring up the rear.

The gossipy Monica calls Marcia: "Fern was so drunk last night the bartender had to put him in a cab." Mom finally starts to worry about Fern - "Maybe we shouldn't have left him so alone." "He isn't alone, he has his accomplice Omar, and if he's alone, it's because that's what he wants."

Omar complains to Fern: "How could you show up here like this? You look a sight and smell like a cheap distillery." "Don't talk to me -- after you set me up last night with that cheap clown!" "She told me you kissed her looking at a little photo of Lety. And then you didn't go home! Do you even know WHERE you went?" "To a pharmacy to buy hair gel [he probably buys the economy quart size]. Then I made friends with the taxi driver and he took me for a little ride through the city."

"Is your brain atrophied?" queries Omar, who then continues with the majority opinion: that Lety has deserted Fern and intends to steal the company.

Meanwhile, in Acapulco Lety is explaining the kiss Caro just witnessed: "Aldo is explaining life and the sea to me, I like him, he's beautiful, we went diving, he never left my side." As he looks on approvingly, she reviews his philosophical monologues for Caro, gives Aldo a kiss on the cheek saying "te quiero mucho," and rushes off.

Caro asks Aldo what's going on - there was one Lety in the morning, and now there's a powderkeg! "What did you do?" He shares his New Age speak with Caro but she is unreceptive and warns him to be careful with Lety and not break her heart. "Keep a little distance, you've already helped her enough."

Teresita asks Fern if he wants to go out to eat, but he isn't hungry, so she sits with him to talk. He assumes she wants to rag him some more, but she wants to talk as his mother (which actually means she wants to rag him some more), "I'm worried to see you like this! Drinking... instead of working..."

He says he has to work things out in his own way, he needs time to pick up the pieces. "I got into the problems myself and I'll get out myself. It's a process. As my friend learned in Buddhism: we have to lose ourselves to find ourselves. Maybe someday I'll be come the hero you want." She says he's ingenuous to think Lety will give the business back, since she hates him now and probably has somebody new. This idea shocks Fern. Mom urges him to reconcile with Marcia. He says he doesn't love her and can't marry her, and that "his" Lety wouldn't behave as Teresita fears.

Tomas rushes into Casa Padilla, anxious for the feed bag. He starts hoovering up his meal, mumbling to the anxious parents that things are bad at Conceptos. Lety calls and talks to Humberto who grumbles: "You haven't been drinking have you? I hope you've been staying far from the ocean! Don't play with it! There are big bad waves, sharks, whales..." She says she's very happy and in fact just went diving. "Very funny," he growls, "don't joke like that. And stay out of the sun, it will give you spots." She doesn't sound worried about freckles.

Tomas tells Lety: Conceptos is coming to a boil. She tells him not to worry, she doesn't want to come home because she's happy, he should talk to their lawyer, Sanchez. Reluctantly, Tomas agrees to keep holding Conceptos back - even though facing Alicia is like a horror movie. "I'll watch your back. But don't get into trouble, or your parents will strangle me, they'll cut off my meal ticket, and they better feed me cause I'm working for free." Mom keeps asking: "What could Fern have done that was so, so bad?"

When Lety tells Caro about the storm arising at Conceptos, Caro thinks she should go back. "No, no, no, when you brought me here I was a cadaver! Now I'm reviving. I have to stay longer so the improvement is permanent and I'm afraid Don -- will find me. And Aldo's wisdom is helping me."

Irmita decides to stay with her friends and work in Mexico, instead of going off with her daughter and son to be passed back and forth (like a ping pong ball, the cuartel comments). The home team cheers. It is promised that there will be visits.

Tomas visits the old bald lawyer, who sees the Elvis hairdo and says approvingly, "I used to wear my hair that way!" Tomas is impactado and asks, "and THEN?"

Tomas refuses a drink (ol' Sanchez doesn't, though) and explains the problem with the incorrectly-drafted letter of renunciation. Sanchez points out Tomas and Lety haven't exactly been contacting him, that the process of working through the embargo/seizure can't be stopped easily -- in fact the process is complete and Lety now owns Conceptos!

NOW Tomas takes a drink and says, "No, the company must stay in the hands of the Villaroels and Mendiolas!" "What you ask is very difficult. Rather, just tell Licenciada Padilla to come in to my office, we'll make a few little plans, have a few little drinks, then we'll go see the judge and see what can be done." "But she's out of town." "Well, then, things will stay as they are." "CHAOS!" "Calm down, you're both multi-millionaires!"

Omar is drooling over the Acapulco beauty contest again (he doesn't see Lety) when Teresita comes in. He switches off the screen, babbles about why he is still in his old office. She brushes that aside and orders him to take care of Fern. "You're his best friend, but you've also been his hangman. He didn't get into this alone, you helped him - you took him to the abyss and then abandoned him. Help him forget that woman."

Caro is arranging the beauty contest with four categories: Teens, Full-figured, Older Women, and "Sexies." One of the full-figured girls is nervous and wants to back out. Caro asks Lety to talk to her. Lety goes to the dressing room, doles out some of Aldo's advice, and when the girl says "I'm afraid of being laughing at me," Lety says: "I sure know what it's like. But perhaps instead of laughing AT you, people will want to laugh WITH you!" She raises her eyebrows happily as if she has a mischievous plan.

I love the La Fea recaps! Mil gracias to all the recappers. CarayCaray is an amazing phenomenon for all of us telenovela addicts. In my humble opinion, Lety deserves to bask in the straightforward admiration of her new friend Aldo, who seems to have reacted positively to her from the first moment he became aware of her. That's been a rare experience for Lety! And Aldo's giving her a new way to look at the world and at herself. I believe Fernando and Lety really love each other, and that their love will ultimately prevail. Hope so, anyway! If Lety becomes the owner of Conceptos, maybe the only way it will ever return to the domain of the Mendiolas & Villaroels will be through Lety and Fernando's marriage. But I've learned that telenovelas are hard to predict! The director's untimely death is certainly a blow, making the outcome of La Fea even more unpredictable. I'm just enjoying the story, the comedy, and the memorable characters, Lety and Fernando, for as long as they last. Dara B

There's no bigger fan of this show than me..I've put my entire social life on hold as not to miss an episode. However,I'm really beginning to lose interest with the constant therapy sessions with Lety coming from the Don Juan of Acapulco and Dr. Phil rolled into one(Aldo)..What ever happend to just getting your "shrink" from the Yellow Pages?

Mama Mendiola? Enough already. She is hell bent on forcing Fern to hook up with that wicked witch of the west,Marcia. What ever happened to being in love? Why not allow her son to follow his heart?
I'm going to call up Televisa and see if I can make application to come up with a better wig to slap on Mama Mendiolas' head..Not only is she a terrible actress, but she can't even get her hair piece to look natural? It's looks as if it has wings..I waited last night, as she was arm twisting Fern about Marcia for Mama Mendiola to sail off like the Flying Nun.. Last night's show has put me almost over the edge..Ha..Mo

Why did Carolina look so shocked when she saw Lety hugging Aldo. She is the one that has been pushing her to be alone with him.

In those spoiler wedding scenes of the first of the wedding is of Marcia but it looks like the bride throwing flowers into the sea is Carolina. Maybe she'll end up marrying Aldo. She seems to be very interested in him.

I'm glad to see Mama Mendiola taking some pity on Fernando, even if her advice is wrong. At least both his parents haven't turned against him.

Poor Fernando, driving around in a taxi all night so as not to have to be alone. This will be the best thing that can happen to him.

Funny how Lety can look so homely sometimes and almost beautiful others. I think its mostly the faces she makes that makes the difference.

Hi recappers and bloggers. I have a question that has nothing to do with last night's show. Does anyone ever think that Oxy's father might be in jail? That's all I keep coming up with as to why she only talks to him about once a week and it's always on the phone and why wouldn't he come to her if she was in so much trouble? My scenario is that he's prob a little less than honest, hence where she might have gotten her "morals" about taking money from people. Whaddyathink? Sandy

I don't think Al's dad is in jail, but I think he's probably poor (not in debt) and can't help her. I also think it amuses him to hear of her troubles, but Alicia is too dumb to realize that he's needling her.

Just curious - what makes you think they only talk once a week? Until very recently they used to talk several times a day. If they are talking less lately, it's because she can barely afford to use her phone. I think she told him they were going to cut it off.

She calls him and he calls her. If he were in jail I'm not sure she'd be able to call him.

It's too late now, but did it occur to anyone else that Tomas could have overnighted the necessary documents to Acapulco for Lety to sign and have them notarized?

Connie, about the bride business -- that's what I thought a few weeks ago and mentioned it here, that obviously the first bride was Marcia and the one in the ocean might be Caro, but now I think those scenes aren't spoilers, I think they're dream sequences.

I couldn't help but wonder last night how many times Humberto has told Fern that he is useless. That is a very incidious form of child abuse especially when slimy Ariel smirks in the corner like a cut rate version of Eddie Haskell (another old time TV reference).

Teresita is clueless as a parent but at least I got the feeling she loves her son something I never get from Humb.

I also wonder why the correct papers aren't just overnighted to Lety and she could sign them have them notarized (nothing in Mexico ever goes anywhere without a dozen seals of some kind on it), Just one more proof that Conceptos has to be the worst run business in the world.

I don't care if Lety basks in the straighforwardness of her new found friend and the second coming of Dr. Phil, just as long as she doesn't ride into the forever sunset with him. I bash alot these characters, as the writing is so off the "norm"..We see the difference in cultures to the extreme which is very interesting, but the comedy particularly from Fernando is just hilarious.Mo

I thought about the overnight-thing too with the documents. Then I wondered if the notary has to indicate what city they are in. That would give it away.

Long time reader..first time poster. Has it escaped anyone the amount of skin Lety is showing now verses at home. It is like she is a totally new person. I personally dislike Aldo's new age speak and think like Caro that he needs to take it down a notch. Besides she has only been there about 3 days; and one of the days was the big meeting. In novella land time runs very very slow.

Forgot to mention this: Did you notice Lety wearing TROUSERS last night when she was getting into the car with Caro? Maybe I've missed something, but I think that was the first time we haven't seen her in a sack dress.

I think so too. And white is a good color for her.

I thought Lety looked adorable in the diving suit, but something about it seemed weird... You just made me realize that it's because it revealed so much of her legs!

I too think Lety looks pretty in white, Fernando does also.
I'm tired of seeing Lety and Dr.Phil/Aldo. I'm tired of the new age mumbo jumbo and I'm tired of Lety batting her eyes at him.
I'm hoping for a change soon in the storyline!

Carrie L.

I too was wondering about sending the papers to Lety. Another thing, is why don't they hire a private investigator to find Lety. I think it would be pretty easy, especially with all the phone calls to her house. Or using one of those listening devices outside the Padilla house.

Omar was cracking me up. I knew he would go back to watching the NB video after Teresita left. I have a feeling Omar will want to take Fern to the NB beauty contest to help him "get over" Lety.

As for Don Aldo, shut up already! I wince at everything that comes out of his mouth. And by this time, shouldn't we have seen him in the kitchen. I think he is a good distraction for Lety, but it's true, they have only know each other for a couple days.

I am going through major withdrawl with no Lety/Fern scenes. He better find her soon.....

Somebody mentioned wondering if a change of directors will impact the show. They obviously film at least several weeks in advance, Mexico is 14 weeks ahead of us so who knows when we might notice at change. The producer and writers are responsible for how the story progresses but the director is responsible for how the actors play the part. It is possible we might see Fern brought under control and not allowed to use all those expressions and Lety may change as well paarticularly as she was close to the late direcotr. If the producers are smart they will transist seamlessly and keep the tone the way it is.

I, TOO HAVE RE-ARRANGED MY SCHEDULE TO MAKE SURE I SEE THIS SHOW. BUT, SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THE ALDO/LETY STORY LINE I FIND THE EPISODES REALLY DRAG. THEY HAVE NO CHEMISTRY. AND I KNOW THAT THIS IS REALLY A CYNICAL COMMENT, BUT I THINK ALDO'S ATTRACTION TO LETY IS LIKE A SAFETY NET.EVEN THOUGH WE ONLY SAW HIS WIFE IN THE CAR(DEAD AND WITH BLOOD DRIPPING DOWN HER FACE)WE COULD SEE THAT SHE WAS VERY ATTRACTIVE. SINCE SHE BETRAYED HIM WITH HIS BEST FRIEND, MAYBE HE'S PLAYING IT SAFE NOW WITH SOMEONE LIKE LETY. ANYWAY, HE MAKES ME SICK.

I can't believe I actually watch this show and I can't understand a word of it! LOL Thank goodness I found a translator here! Thank you!

Another who is altering her life to not miss a minute even when Dr.Aldo and Lety are BORING me to death with all their yammering. The show airs early here in the southwest so I'm not cooking a real dinner just living on sandwiches or soup that I can munch on while LFMB is on. The only time I get a real dinner is during the wekend when I go through withdrawal.

Ladies (and gentlemen), as frustrated as many of us are now, we'd better be prepared for more. It's a long haul to the end of this novela, another 4-5 months. I'm not the psychic man, but I predict lots of plot churning and rehashing as the pace moves so very slowly. I've told myself to enjoy the journey (or did Aldo tell me that? and just let events flow.

Regarding the brides:
Maybe Caro's being in the ocean means that she is the one meant for Aldo in the end (we all know by now how enthralled he is of the sea). Also, his new-age ways would probably balance out Caro's work obsession (she mentioned she worked so much that she destroyed three of her marriages). Just a thought.

Hmmm...I have no clue who Marcia will end up with. As much as she can be mean, I wouldn't want to see her hook up with Omar--not unless that man has an amazing trip to Oz and gets a heart.

Stacey

You know, I too have not been watching LFMB much either. I have been taping it, but have not really had the heart to watch.
It's just not as fun as it was before. It's going turtle-like-slow. So, I think that all of you doing the translation deserve a big hand in making the blog interesting and fun. As always, what you do is the bright spot, and though I am missing the episodes on T.V., I NEVER miss a blog!!!!

Stacey

Right on you guys.""""""There's no chemistry between Lety and the new Dr. Phil (Aldo)..Thank you for pointing that out..When she & Fernando are together it's total combustion..They are hotter than July in Florida..It's about time Lety gets on the plane back to Mexico City walks into Conceptos and becomes a great business woman. It's time to stop this being on a sabbatical of trying to find herself..What woman in her right mind would take Aldo over Fern..?Hasn't Aldo been married three times and got kids or am I mistaken? Maureen,Ft. Myers,Florida

Aldo's only been married once. His "kids" are his plans to open a chain or restaurants, and to write a book about how to cook with love.

It's Carolina who has been married three times, but she doesn't have any kids either.

Whoever clarified my error on the marriages of Aldo & Carolina, thank you..

Am I missing something in the opening of our show? I don't see Caro throwing flowers in the ocean and kissing Fern..I see that obnoxious Marcia. In fact, I get so pissed at the new intro that I can't watch it..It makes me furious to think Fern would hookup with Marcia and that we're being deceived by the writers..Well, I should say the writers keep us watching and guessing.

It looks like Marcia to me too.

I think the bride kissing Fernando is Marcia, but the bride throwing her bouquet in the ocean is Caro.

I think the bride kissing Fernando and the bride in the ocean is the one and only Marcia.

Thank you recappers for working so hard to translate the show.

I am starting to feel differently about Lety. I used to feel sorry for her because of Fernando's and Omar's deceptions. However, after seeing Fernando suffer so much, I do not think she is as innocent as she appears to be. She acted unethically when she helped to create Filmo-Imagen and is now acting irresponsibly by refusing to return to Mexico. Fernando thinks that she is sweet but all she wants is revenge. Rather than legally dissolve Filmo-Imagen, she is too busy discussing the depths of the oceans with Dr. Phil. Everyone has been adversely affected by her actions. However, she is now a multi-millionaire and has the affections of two gorgeous men.

Thanks, Melinama, for the terrific recap. I was out of town overnight to meetings, and only caught the last ten minutes or so when I begged off early from the dinner meeting (sounds like someone else on this blog, if I remember correctly). I was pleased to see Teresita chew Omar out for his part in it all, but then tonight I read the recap, then watched the recorded program, and realized she did her own son wrong again! At least this time it wasn't in public. Still, she is no supportive Mama. Poor Fern!

At least Lety is smiling and laughing again, looking like herself a little. She hurt for a while, and Fern will hurt for a while. He continues to assert that she just is not capable of such duplicity that she would steal Conceptos from them. He believes in her and trusts her still. I think he is correct. They have both been acting like adolescents, but they are playing a teenage game in an adult situation with a multi-million dollar company. She reacted the way a teenage girl might have, given that much hurt and betrayal.

I still feel it will work out well for the two of them. Hope springs eternal.....now I am off to watch tonight's version. My husband can't believe I sped home 140 miles, got into the house, and ran up to watch the recorded program pretty much before I even asked him what mail we got. He's still shaking his head. (And then to add insult to injury I told him I'm going to the big tv in the basement to watch tonight, and use the treadmill.....(giggling like Lety).

All the recappers are great, and so are the ones who make their daily comments..A very astitute group we have here.

Someone made the comment of the constant therapy sessions of Lety & Aldo..I also think that way too much time is being spent on moving Lety into the 21st. Century..

It seems this telenovela will continue for at least 4-5 months,so those who love Fernando and believe we've had enough of the Fernando bashing hold on. The payback,I believe, has just begun. When is enough enough? Lety has his company, read the "fea" letter, and as terrible and degrading as the letter was (written by Omar but all actions supported by Fernando)it's time to make something positive of the experience.I've loved the character of Lety from day one,but slowly I'm changing my mind..I won't mind at all if she rides off into the sunset with Aldo.It seems we have two peas in the same pod.I love the show,as we all do,but this torturous story is going on way too long.Mo

I agree that Lety and Aldo deserve each other.

I loved Lety and Fernando together, they seemed like a perfect match. Now Lety seems to becomming more like Aldo. She is very much the chameleon. Now she and Aldo/Dr.Phil seem to be a good match. I don't see the chemistry between them that she had with Fern, but there is a similarity in their personalities.
I want Lety and Fern back together!I am REALLY tired of the Lety/Aldo storyline. Fern's constant tortue is breaking my heart. Everyone is against him and no one seems to be on his side.
How much do you kick someone when he is down? It's getting to be a little too much!

Carrie L.

It is very interesting that Lety wants to get Aldo and his dad back together after she publicly disgraced Fernando in front of his dad at the big meeting. What's up with that? Now Fernando's dad is disgusted with him and calls him useless.

Do the baby boomers on this blog remember the song "If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife?" Great song and should be the theme music for this telenovela!
I, too am getting tired of the new-age dribble- that might have worked for the first couple of days to give Lety a respite from her melancholy and anger, but YA, BASTA, Sr. Aldo!
A comment about Oxy's Papa- Maybe he lives out of town, too far a drive for visits. Besides, Univision saves one whole salary by making Papa a phone personality.

I posted the words for "never make a pretty woman your wife" on this blog a while back...

If you think Fern is being tortured, consider what usually happens to the heroines of soap operas. Take Maite for instance - her aunt killed, she was raped, her husband was murdered, she got poisoned by her mother-in-law and her baby was taken away, she left town in disgrace and didn't get revenge for about 25 years (after her daughter had ALSO been poisoned). Fern has a long way to go to compete with that.

You know, I was really irked by Teresita the other night. The way she was talking, you'd think she thought she deserved a medal for not cutting down Fern in front of everyone. I'm not sure how cutting him down in private is a lot better, especially since she clearly favors her stepdaughter over him and has never once considered his point of view. All of their communication has been very much a one-way thing.

Her only saving grace in my eyes is that she doesn't seem to have much use for Ariel. :-) So at least Fern is her favorite son... although I think the Fern she "knows" is a Fern of her own invention, a projection, rather than the real Fernando.

As for the bride in the ocean - I watched the credits extra-slow last night and I just don't understand why people think it's Carolina. She is wearing Marcia's dress and veil, has her hair exactly the same, and has a wide round face like Marcia, not an oval face like Caro. Two different women who know each other, wearing the same bridal gown? I just don't see it.

And as much as I'd like to pair up Aldo with someone other than Lety, I'm not sure Caro's the one for him. She doesn't seem to dig all of his New-Agey stuff. In fact, I can't think of any man on LFMB who's worthy of Carolina right now! Maybe Tomas, someday, if he ever grows up...

There was a very interesting article in one of the gossipy mags about LFMB. It is translated in part on the foro.telenovela - world website. Essentially it is a shot at dragging the thing out and adding more characters like Tomas' mother. It doesn't reveal anything except that the fans hate it. Jamie Camil is quoted as saying he will probably be fired for saying it but that it is a shame when you take a great script and let it go down hill. Angelica says that it is exhausting filming 12 hours a day 7 days a week and that she has had to be taken to the hospital a couple of times for exhaustion. One of the fans says as far as she is concerned Jamie has had his ticket punched to be a top rated novela protagonist and should have his choice of roles. In any event there is some feeling that the show may end in either Jan or March in Mexico so there may be hope for all of us yet.

YES, Caro is a notch above in many ways- smart, independent, capable, very beautiful, successful, easy to get along with. No wonder it's hard to find an exceptional man to stay married to....
I see Caro's face in those end-credits--even the hair style is Caro's. I'm sure they have very deliberately made this confusing (with marcia's wedding dress, etc) so we can all keep guessing. They spend less than a nanosecond on her face--it's almost impossible to look at it clearly. I think Caro had an interest in Aldo at one time but realized he was just too much of a hermit, unavailable...etc. At the dinner table when they first arrived, she had such a huge sparkle in her eye when she talked about the mystery chef as if he were someone totally unattainable.
I still don't get how someone like Lety, so uncomfortable in the water ,could be allowed to go diving--I mean not even snorkelling. I thought it was actually illegal to dive without some certification.....but oh well, there are so many exceptions in the world of telenovelas!

bOkay, here is something for speculation... Why don't they just put Alicia onto Tomas for a while?? I am sure she could get Lety's whereabouts out of him!?!?! I am also sure she would do it if they offered to help her get her stupid car back!! That wouldn't be cheap, but it would be a lot cheaper than losing a 45 million dollar business to Lety, right? I can't believe Ariel -who is always trying to use Alicia in some pimping way, hasn't figured out this angle -even if he didn't know about the two of them before-he is always trying to get her to use her bod for money or other reasons! Geez, even Marcia could have figured out this no brainer!

Jamie Camil had a leading role in Mujer de Madera, a Mexican soap opera. I believe his character had a problem with alcohol and he played a convincing drunk.

Louise, that is an ingenious idea! Unfortunately, I don't think anyone at Conceptos has 500,000 pesos to give her. Anyway, she's missed the deadline, so there's no way she can get that car back.

Why do they film 12 hours a day 7 days a week? I'm surprised the actors are still alive.

Is it possible for normal people to suddenly end up working in this Novella?

I'm new to this and i'm not seeing the fri 1/5 summary of LFMB. Is it not posted yet or am I having computer problems. I was having problems with this server on friday. I also wanted to thank the recappers for the wonderful job they're doing. I'd be so lost if it wasn't for them so thank you.

I really think that Lety and Aldo would end up together. Aldo is the only man that has every really loved Lety for who she is. Fernando does not deserve her AT ALL. He was shallow at the beginning to not notice her beauty, through her appearance. Then, when the love affair began, he still lied to her.
Even when he did fall in love with her, he didn't tell Lety the whole truth. Fernando honestly sickens me. I think he should end up with poor Marcia, who I really pity, because she has loved always loved him. I don't think it was the Lety-Fernando love affair was fair to her at all. In fact, maybe it would be best that Fernando would end up all alone. As for Aldo's "lectures", I really like them. He and Lety are perfect for each other, because they've both been through so much.
