Destilando Amor, 04/20/07: Thirsting in the Desert.......
Gavi refuses to leave Montalvo Corporation's premises she says, until Aaron Montalvo himself tells her to her face that he will not see her. (Bad move, Gavi, in the business world. Totally back-sassword when seeking employment.) Elvira huffily informs Gavi that Aaron will not receive her now or ever. Gavi refuses to leave and tries to enter Aaron's office, but she is stopped. Elvira is forced to call security on her.
James tells Rod that their detective is putting out fliers with Gavi's picture to all the farmers in all the nearby towns asking for information. He's also contacting area radio stations. Rod says the cost does not matter. He wants his Gaviota.
Gavi goes back down to Margarita at Reception to explain the botched appointment. Margarita tries to console her but then sees Aaron walking through the lobby with a few other businessmen on their way out of the building. He is busily speaking into a cellphone as Margarita runs over to get his attention, but he refuses to stop for her and continues out of the building. He does not notice Gavi at all. Margarita then suggests Gavi should wait for him to return. While waiting, Gavi starts to chat with her about Rodrigo.
Gavi says she's heard talk of Rodrigo Montalvo, the cousin. Margarita tells her what she knows: that scandal doesn't follow him around like it does with Aaron, that he is aparrently happily married and surely very soon his wife will be expecting their child.
Meanwhile, Isa calls up Sofia to tell her that last night was the first time that her brother actually slept in the same bed as she, and that (even though nothing sexual happened between them) she is certain that very soon she'll succeed in seducing him.
In the meantime, our daffy duo, Rod and James, are going over to the agave farm of craggy Sr. Melitón to make an offer to buy his agave harvest. (Did I read that right? They actually named his place "Dry Gulch???") While there, Meliton's dead wife's niece, Acacia, reluctantly waits on the three of them, bringing out a tray of tequila.
James is immediately taken with the meek, young Acacia. (Did I emphasize the word "young" here?) It is obvious that he cannot keep his eyes off her. (Sofia, you may have been right about leaving James after all.) The entire time Melitón is loud and abusive with her. She is abnormally quiet and looks down at her feet continuously, as if she'd prefer the proverbial ground to swallow her whole. Melitón explains that she's his only "companion" there now that his wife is dead and gone.
James makes the mistake of calling her a beautiful woman. Melitón tells him boys are not to make such flirtatious remarks with the intention of bringing his niece to rot and ruin. So Rod asks him what school does she attend around there. (Broad hint, Ja-mes.) When questioned he says there is too much for her to do around the place to be allowed to go to school.
Rod offers to best any other bid for Melitón's current crop of agave and they seal the deal with tequila. On their way out a bit later, James tells Rod that the girl holds a mysterious attraction for him, and feels this is what Rod must have felt for Gaviota. Rod tells him she is too young, but James figures she's at least 17 or 18. Rod says that's precisely his point. (James may be 30-ish, but he does think and act like he's 17 a great deal of the time. That kind of naivete is acceptable up to a point. So now I am thinking that with all the young adult women around there, he has to fixate on a minor? Sorry, but is this evidence of some sort of cultural divide I am not worldly enough to appreciate or what?)
James says it doesn't matter. She is like an angel and he feels the need to protect her. (Uh-oh! There is that word "protec-tor" again.) She has awakened goodly desires and stolen his heart. Rod is not the only one who might be caught up in an "impossible love". At that, Rod pretty much switches from Mr. Morally Discriminate and turns into Mr. Morally Equivalent agreeing that yes, it is the same way that Gavi stole his [heart]. (I say, not quite, stud-bud. Gavi, according to the storyline, is supposedly well past the age of majority. -Slap!! Thwack!!)
Gavi, driven in her quest to become a Montalvo Corporation employee, goes back to see Genoveva to ask for another appointment. However, Geneveva rudely says no and when Gavi insists, she pulls out the little tape recorder and plays the portion where Aaron's telling Elvira to throw her out. Gavi gets the message both literally as well as figuratively and gives up. (Good, because this was becoming painfully embarrassing to watch her so dangerously driven and stooping to this pitiful level.)
Meanwhile, Clarita calls to speak with Gavi while Flavia is at the reception desk, covering for the awol Gavi, as Nancy is gone to lunch. Flavia tricks Clarita by telling her that Gaviota went to see the doctor again. When Clarita is surprised to hear this and asks what's wrong with her daughter, Flavia screams back, "If you don't know then how should I?" and slams the phone down.
When Gavi returns to work more than a little bit late, she's given an envelope that Flavia has left for her. The letter inside tells her she's been fired. Flavia comes by to gloat and tell her that she shouldn't think now she can go running off to Max because he's been transferred out (per his own request) and now Flavia is the hotel's new manager!
Minnie calls Genoveva to check up on her husband's activities. Genoveva tells her about the run in with "Mariana Franco Villareal" who had been insisting on the pretext of seeing him about hiring her. Genoveva explains that she'd followed Minnie's instructions and used the tape recording to get rid of this pest. Additionally she informed Security to stop her if she tries entering the building again. Minnie smiles like the cheshire cat.
Gavi gets home and has to explain to Clarita that she was fired from her job and Montalvo Corporation blew her off. Clara gets to say "I told you so" a hundred different ways. They now haven't any money left, not even to pay the rent. Clarita suggests she goes back to apologize to Sr. Vallejo. Gavi explains how he unfortunately had transferred to a different hotel after she turned down his marriage proposal because she was still in love with Rod. Clarita goes wild with frustration. "You just had to dig your heels in over this Montalvo thing! All you ever wanted was to meet up with Rodrigo Montalvo again!" She stomps out of the apartment in a huff.
Back at the hacienda, San Juana tells Hilario she wants him to consider marrying her. He tells her that he wants to get some land and animals first and that will take him a while, so marriage isn't in his immediate future. She says well, if he doesn't marry her she will find someone just as "charming" who will marry her.
That evening Rod returns to the hacienda after a day of deal-making and mentions to Isa while up in the bedroom that he's arranging for financing to help her dad and then she'll see he'll be out of this fix soon enough. Then he says he's going to get cleaned up. Isa suggests he relax in the tub in there instead. Rod agrees.
When he comes out only wrapped in his bath towel, she is waiting in her red dressing gown with a prepared dinner tray. Hot Rod is a little embarrassed to be seen this way. Isa smiles and cajoles him by seductively hand-feeding him a few hors d'oeuvres. She offers to get a formal paper for her father's debt but he says it isn't necessary. She is grateful and discusses her shame and embarrassment should the family ever find out about her father's financial problems. This over, she talks him into eating with her there.
First, though, Rod must put on his jammies.
Aaron argues with Minnie at dinner that night over her continuing to drink alcohol while she's pregnant after the doctor has specifically warned her against it. They eventually discuss the possibility of the baby being a girl. When Minnie says the baby's gender is out of her hands, he suggests she go to the doctor to find out if it is a boy or not. (What? Is he going to force her to abort and start over again if it isn't???)
The will stated, Aaron reminds his wife, that the child has to be a boy if they're to get their hands on the Montalvo fortune. (What's the darned hurry, anyway? Rod, at the rate he's going, is obviously not a threat. to Aaron. Although, being the alleycat that he is, Aaron cannot conceive of the idea of a one-woman-man. This simply does not exist in his universe and he probably doubts that his cousin will stay chaste much longer. Hell, I can hardly believe it!) Minnie, deprived of her drink and depressed about the 50/50 chance they'll have a girl, ends dinner with a long face.
Rod and Isa spend the rest of the evening playing (this is absolutely weird and retarded) silly children's games over wine and snacks until Rod finally says good night. (Well! Will they now or won't they?) Isa reluctantly (I guess not) enters her own bedroom and angrily throws the pillows around while Rod, aparrently feeling the emptiness of his marriage, calls out to Gavi telling her how much he needs her to come back to him.
The next day Gavi looks for work and eventually finds out that nobody wants to hire her because Flavia has been giving every prospective employer bad references. She returns home and tells Clarita the rotten news. To make matters worse, Severino, the apartment manager, bangs on their door to tell them he'll have to throw them out the next day if he doesn't get their rent money for the landlord. Gavi refuses to return to the life of a migrant worker. So, the two decide to hock Clarita's broken sewing machine and to do mending by hand and some washing and ironing to pay the rent till Gavi can find something again.
That same morning Rod is dressed and ready to leave early but Isa begs him to stay. (This is it, boys!) She lets her dressing gown drop and is in a see-through negligee that reveals our Victoria has no remaining secrets. Rod --this guy is the proverbial saint-- gets angry at her attempt. "I said stop this. I don't love you. I don't love you. " and he leaves the room.
Isa is left humiliated and incensed. (Isa, honey, you asked for it. Now, realize you got your papa his infusion of cash. Just cut your losses and agree to a separation and half of Rod's fortune. He's stupid enough not to fight you on it and would probably consider it a small price to pay just to get you out of his hair and his life once and for all!)
A bit later, Isa, still in her dressing gown, enters the kitchen for a bit of breakfast and coffee as Rod is just finishing his. "Oh, you're still here." (Finally there is some obvious smoke curling out of her ears.) Rod counters, "What are you going to do today?" "Hmmph! Getting cleaned up, getting dressed, eating, wait for you to return home, then wait for it to turn dark and go to bed again. Fun, right." Rudely he answers her, "Have a nice day. Bye." Ofelia then offers to have her come with the others to town while they do their shopping, but Isa rudely turns them down. Then it hits her, "Did you say you're all going to be gone?" "Yes."
When Gavi and her mother get to the pawnshop the owner tells them that because the machine is busted he will not give them much of anything for it. Gavi decides to give him Rod's watch instead and tells him it is a jewel and worth more than all the gold in the world to her. Clara shakes her head in disbelief.
Back at the hacienda, Isa is definitely a woman in need. She has heard the call of the wild. (At this point it is hard to believe she came undefiled to her, as yet, unused marriage bed.) She goes to the pool for a swim, and in her tiniest bikini of course. She spies Hilario cleaning the pool and remembers seeing his sexy self during his and SanJuana's little roll in the hay a while back. So Isa sneaks up behind him. He is a bit shocked to see her there and a little uncertain. (Should he or shouldn't he?) She wraps her arms around him in a sensual embrace and plants a hot kiss right on his mouth. "Don't be frightened." As for Hilario, well what's a poor boy to do?

I've tired of all the lies Gav is telling - and the way she tried to weasel around her absence from work during working hours. This is not responsible behavior! But that's a minor quibble. I'm happy nobody's been murdered yet.

I've been sitting back quietly observing the interactions between Rod and Isa. I think they deserve each other. Afterall, he married for the wrong reasons and Isa was stupid enough to accept. But wait, not so fast. The way Gavi has been acting lately, he deserves her also. (I agree with the person who said Isa should cut her losses and split). Maybe she would if she knew what we already know. That is that the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow has Gavi's name on it.

Hee Hee Hee...James liking them young..well that is not that uncommon on in the rural areas..besides Rod's TWB, was boinking..Cesar in LaWhatever..but actually I think Rod is a little older than Cesar in real life...however Cesar was not a virgin...That young girl's uncle is bringin the creep factor.
The actor who plays Meliton was in Alborada [La Poderosa's henchman] and Amor Real [Adolfosolis's loyal sidekick]. Yikes , Isa has pulled out all the stops . Loved your comment, Jardinera , about our Victoria having no more secrets. Good one. Hilario looks like he will succumb to the charms that HotRod has so far been able to resist. I must say I admire HotRod for not boinking everything in sight ... just because he's handsome and rich and it's there in front of him. Good on you, HotRod...you are my kind of hombre. I wonder if Isa will become pregnant and claim that HotRod is her baby daddy. [Remember Esperanza in Alborada getting pregnant by Diego and trying unsuccessfully to convince Luis that he was the daddy by saying it happened one time when he was drunk. His response was that he had never been THAT DRUNK !!!] And naive Gavi, no job, no money ....maybe HotRod's offer is starting to sound better to her than poverty. Thanks and I have been thinking along the same lines about Gavi -- and about TWB needing a cover story since she's spent at least one night in the same room/bed with Rod. Maybe she'll turn on the tears and he'll feel so guilty about rejecting her that he'let everyone think the baby is theirs.

Thanks for the recap Jardinera. I agree with Melinama, I'm tried of Gavi's lies but I'm glad no one is dead (yet). I also agree with Julie TWB overplayed her hand but always does so. When she's in this mode (trying to entice Rod) I call her Wiley E. Coyote. She never learns.

IMO Gavi is just little bit over the top in seeking this job. Does she have any knowledge of how evil Aaron is? I could understand her wanting to work at Montalvo just to perhaps run into Rod, but why is she so hell bent on working for Aaron in particular?
Whoever said that Flavia looked like Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie was right on the mark. That realy cracked me up.

This one has been extended to 160 episodios so if they are 1 hr rather than 1/2hr we can look for it to last 8 months I think. I believe they usually last between 4 and 6 months. --For me 8 months is a looooooong time to take to resolve things and some feel it may wreck the original script that followed the book so well.

I don't like it when the telenovelas are extended. Too much filler and not enough meat. Somebody said they were doing this with Zorro too, bad move I think. This is also the reason why I don't get excited about watching Bailando any more. I LOVE to watch the dancing but I don't care a hoot about the personal sturm und drang they try to forcefeed us.

Sylvia--Did you watch ''Bailando'' this week? It was very fast moving. Manuel Landete and his wife renewed their vows with their sons at their side. The couples must have danced 4 or 5 dances each. They are going to kill these people. They must all be exhausted and so many have been injured. Liz did an unbelievable merengue at the end. How DOES she shake her butt that fast??? It is like superhuman. Manuel ended up in first place.

Susanlynn, I wasn't going to watch Bailando, but thanks to your comment about Liz's butt I of course had to tune in. I missed Manuel's vow renewal, but I also missed most of the yackety yack which is a good thing. I did get to see the last 1.5 hrs. of dancing. It's truly amazing the amount of dancing those couples have to do. Liz is fantastic! You're right, I think she must be some kind of superwoman. Her partner was fast too. It was great to see Manuel and his partner get first place. He is an elegant dancer, his flamenco was very sexy.

Hey, I peek in on that show from time to time. I have seen Manuel Landete in snippets, but could see his talent. I just happened to peek in last night during the vows. He is the villain you always love to hate.

Sylvia and Jardinera~~~The renewal of vows was so sweet. Both of their sons were there..the one who danced in Manuel's place when he was hurt and another with a long blonde ponytail. They showed wedding photos and other photos of the family . [It was strange to see Manuel with a thick head of hair.] There wasn't much wasted time last night except for showing the guy contestants going through some stupid obstacle course, answering questions about their mujeres, getting pelted with eggs, and shot with paintballs. [Que????] I don't know how these contestants keep going, and the celebrities go above and beyond anything an American celebrity would do. They seem to have become very emotionally attached and invested in their partners. I will miss this show when it is over. I love to dance and love watching good dancers. They've all worked so hard. "Sturm und drang," yes it's German and something I picked up from taking a class in German literature while in college (a long time ago). It means "storm and impulse" or "storm and stress," i.e. a state of turmoil, emotion and disorder as opposed to the objective order of rationalism. It's a term I had forgotten for years until I started watching telenovelas.
I sure am glad I missed the paintballs and other junk. I only want to watch the dancing. I would love to see Manuel and Liz dance together. He looks much sexier with a bald head than with hair.

OT - I watched some of Bailando last night. The wife beating issue is being addressed in many forums in Mexico,it seems.
I was surprised about the host talking about his parents. Josue is, well, I'll just say he can't dance and he's a hot head. Poor Maragarita.
Does that stuff usually happen on Bailando? It was morphing into a PSA /Cristina show hybrid.

That one is by Caridad Bravo Adams whose numerous novels have been put onto the Televisa/Uni screen as telanovelas. I meant to say "screenplay" from Columbia (1994) which was so well received. There is a website from a TN-W forista who, along with other fans, years ago typed up the whole original screenplay there along with the La Mentira novel and Corazon Salvaje.
There are name changes and location changes to coffee plantations rather than agave plantations. But, from a youtube view of the first episodio the script and sets are very closely followed. Practice your Spanish comprehension and read the script if you want to get ahead on the action.

Upon further research it seems it was written in 1999 and was based upon the original screenplay, but unfortunately is out of print and the few used ones out there are selling for $100 or so!! It would be nice if someone would re-print and re-release it, wouldn't it? With all the hubbub over DA, they could make a second bundle from it.
Ah-ha ! So they were talking about abuse on ''Bailando.'' I didn't figure that out. Did Josue hit Margarita? I saw the host talking and crying, but I couldn't understand what it was about. It seems like Josue is always in the middle of some kind of drama, but I can never figure out if he is in the right and being picked on or if he is the bad guy. I like his partner Jackie so much. She has a great smile and dances her heart out. She seems very loyal and supportive of Josue. There was also some kind of drama between Iran, Romeo, and Erica. I guess that Erica had been jealous of Iran and they seemed to have worked that out. They showed Romeo's hands and he was crying---I guess he had a very poor, rough childhood. I missed all that stuff. The Flamenco was in full force when I turned on the TV. My pal Maria, who usually fills in all the blanks for me, is on vacation this week so I'm as stumped as you are. I would hate to think that Josue is an abusive guy.
My favorite part of the show was when the dancers had to select three dances for their celebrity competition. They kept asking each other "which ones do you want?" and the host kept saying, "no, pick hard ones, they are your competition." Finally Manuel picked his own name so the host made all the women choose which dances he would have to do.
