La Fea Más Bella #259 4/23/07 in which Fern gets unwelcome news from the wrong person.
The cuartel: (1) "How will we find the mysterious woman, so that we can win the dinner with Colunga and the trip?" They decide Omar and Caro are the only ones with clues; (2) "Those among us on Team Fern and Team Aldo must unite, or we will come to blows, and then how will we win the contest?"
Fern's conversation with his dad continues. "Lety is on some kind of astral voyage, she's confused, that's why she thinks she might want Aldo. She'll end up with me, I'm sure!" (Looks unsure.)
Omar visits Fern to gossip about discovering Aldo has taken an ordinary cooking job. Omar does upper-class mocking but Fern says Aldo's decision to take a job to pay his bills (now that he's sold everything to rescue Conceptos) is dignified and deserves admiration. Omar makes fun of Fern and Aldo for being bewitched by the little Gargoyle. Then he blabs about being smitten by Aurora! If it weren't so obvious it would be fun. Fern throws him out. Omar gets back at him later by taking a picture of him in Lety's old office: "Look at the little bat in his cave."
We find Alicia in Marcia's bed, stuffing her face with potato chips and reading cheesy magazines. When Marcia tries to throw her out, she pretends to be asleep and snores very loudly. "This is hell, this is horror!" exclaims Marcia as she leaves. Alicia goes back to chomping the chips.
An exhausted Tomas drags himself out of bed early in the morning because Lety has summoned him - "I need somebody to talk to in the flesh!" - to tell him she's chosen Aldo. Tomas brightens up and shouts: "Aldo's the best guy I've ever known!" - Lety says "Keep it down, I don't want my parents to know till I've told Fern." Tomas is ready for breakfast but Lety kicks him out! She eats later with her parents, her long face worries her mother, her father warns: "Don't do anything you'll regret." Roses arrive from Aldo.
That same morning, Marcia - who hasn't slept a wink - is sitting with a meager breakfast when Alicia struts in with an overflowing plate, complaining: "There's almost nothing in the refrigerator. And the interior decorating around here is horrendous, I'll change it." Marcia: "Now I understand how your ex-husband felt. You're intolerable, abusive, and stupid."
In the president's office, Fern and Lety simultaneously say "I have something important to tell you." After a few "you first"s, Fern says: "I told my father I love you. I'm not trying to pressure you, it just - made me happy." Lety makes a twisted face and tries to tell him HER news, but he says, "I'm in a big hurry to see my clients, but, see, I've left your desk in perfect order, just as you like it." He rushes out.
Caro and Lety rehash. "If you've decided for Aldo, I hope you'll drop your plan of wreaking vengeance on Omar." "Of course, I can't risk getting discovered. You invent something to tell Omar." "No, I can't! He's so stubborn." Caro's cell rings, it's Omar.
Meanwhile, Fern has come back and wants to see Lety. "How can she still be talking to Caro?" The cuartel says women can talk a long, long time about men. Aldo arrives, he also wants to see Lety. Fern says: "I'm first in line." Aldo leaves; Fern has to get back to his clients so he asks the cuartel to make sure Aldo doesn't get in first.
Caro, who in the end told Lety she didn't mind handling Omar, that it was in fact kind of amusing, goes to his office. He can't believe Aurora ran out on him. "Well, there's always a first time. And how about all the times you stood ME up?" "Well, that's my strategy." "Well, Aurora told me she doesn't like you and doesn't want to see you." Omar can't believe it and thinks Caro's fooling with him because she's jealous. She just laughs: "This time your seduction failed." As she leaves he soliloquizes: "Nobody rejects Omar Carvajal, it's an error."
Marcia does a little actual work. So, surprisingly, does Fern! He is promoting Conceptos to a bunch of potential clients, talking fast, showing them the hi-tech equipment (he wants them to have their commercials made at the Conceptos production company). They're pleased to hear Luigi works at Conceptos.
Meanwhile, Luigi visits Lety, saying "St. Aldo" has made him promise to make nice. He takes her to his studio, asks if "between us girls" he can call her Orni (short for platypus), shows her bits of his brilliance, tells her she'll never be as feminine as he (Luigi) is, and complains about the ugly cuartel. He is "stupefied" by HER brilliant perspective when she points out that the beauty of beautiful people is enhanced when contrasted to ugly people in the vicinity, therefore the feas are an advantage for Luigi.
Aldo and Fern meet outside Aldo's office. Fern shakes hands with Aldo and embraces him, simultaneously warning him: "This doesn't mean we're friends." Fern's doing it because he respects Aldo's decision to cook for a living, but Aldo thinks it's the loser's gracious gesture and says, "This is noble of you, considering that Lety chose me." "What?" The golden circle of goodbye encircles Fern's twitching, impactada face.

Thanks, Melinama that was fast!
My heart aches for Don Ferni.
If Lety had made the right decision, why does she feel so bad? There are times when I feel like flinging Lety by her trenza. :) What was the rush??
The violin piece that is played when Lety or Don Ferni are thinking about each other or interacting with each other, does it have a name? Does anyone know???
Why does Fernando want to sell Conceptos to a bunch of clients - no entiendo?
Pobrecita Lety. She made her decision but feels bad. Estoy muy impactado. Give me a break. I hope that Don Ferni finds someone more worthy of his love and eventually dumps la gargolita.
I'm soooo unhappy with this I don't care about the romance part, anymore. I laughed at the Omar & Fern antics and Lety & Luigi girl talk.
I think at this point Don Fern and the comedy is what is keeping me glued and even that's weakening.
Wow Marycelis, you are much better than me. At least you laughed at something.
I found the whole episode so sad and depressing. With what's happening now nothing seems funny.
All I could think of was how will I stand watching this and see Fern suffer AGAIN????
Hey Lety, maybe you should keep the Aurora disguise and go off with Omar?
Carrie L.
most of it. Lety is such a twit. How can she promise
one man one day and change her mind the next.
Maldo gets me furioso if that's a word.
Then I reran the happy episode when Fern proposed
to her. I can't bear to see him crying again.
Does anyone know the singer and the song that was
played when he proposed to Lety.
Thanks Melinama for the fast recap. And thanks to
all who post here. It keeps me sane.
This is a very good reason for the ole saying...don't dip your pen in the company ink...
now he is gonna have to live with Aldo and Lety mi amoring in the outer office all day.
not grim considering waiting to see when Fer got the bad news...
Also could someone give Lety a color wheel so clothes could like kinda match maybe?
But now that she has chosen to be with good-will clothes wearing Aldo, it hardly matters to me how she dresses. And as for Lety choosing Aldo, I think a lot of it has to do with guilt. She lost it with guilt when he barged in her office and announced he sold everything. (The fact that he sold everything would have made me head for the hills.) She still feels guilty about Marcia, even though she should not because Fern never loved M that way. She definitely has that Catholic guilt thing happening. (I should know - 12 years of Catholic school.) But this is not an excuse and Lety is an asshat. And I have tried to not hate her for a long time because she is supposed to be the heroine. I don’t see how Lety is going to win the audience AND Fern back in 6 weeks. Poor Fern. It looked in the preview of tonite’s like he was avoiding Lety, who could blame him? It is not going to be entertaining to watch him suffer some more.
Teresa
In the real world, she might choose someone like Aldo after being hurt by bad boy types, as she seems to say she is doing. But in this story, we the audience know that Fernando isn't really bad, and she also really knows it, and what's more, she really loves Fern more. It's very hard to watch, because you just can't suspend disbelief.
Marie from Mass
P.S. Aldo wears Armani, not Goodwill. = ; )
Thanks for the recap, Melinama.
I think Rosy made Aldo out to be the kind of guy SHE finds charming... it appears that most of us find him to be too smooth, too glib, too quick with all the right words and gestures, which just makes him seem more shallow or manipulative in contrast to Fernando's spontaneous, awkward, sincere shows of affection (which are mostly occurring behind Lety's back at this point).
In Rosy's defense, though, I'm not sure it was her idea to extend the show; I thought it was the network's. I don't know how much power, if any, she had to refuse, but I do wish the extension had been handled differently.
This is why extending novelas and not giving writers the time to craft coherent plots (if any novela really has that, anyhow)is bad for everyone except the producers and their checking accounts.
I cannot stand hearing Lety say "mi amor" to Aldo. She likes having a real novio to say that to, more than she really feels it.
I also cannot abide Fernando bowing and scraping. gawd....bad enough that used to be Lety's natural state of being, but for Fer to adopt that because he's trying to be "humble" & "atone" for his sin of being upperclass - HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT!!
I liked Alicia's scene in bed, eating chips, or chicharrones - pure Alicia - self indulgent , lazy, naca.
Melinama - agree 100% - Fernando's charms vs.Aldo , as always :)
I've been watching "La Otra" with Juan Soler and Yadhira from 2000 (?). I think it won best novela that year, and Juan was definitely a big reason. Coincidentally,"Apuesta por un Amor" with Juan is on Sun. night, and while not all Mr. Good in this, he's still a good guy.
Sooo - my point is - Juan certainly had more cred than Jamie as a novela heartthrob when Rosy signed him on. Aldo could have been great, if he'd left, oh about 4 months ago.
Onward. ¡ Lety y Fernando para siempre!
Similar sentiment would go for Fern, but at least they paint Pop reluctant about his association. Anyway, I tried to put my prejudices aside, but man I just couldn't get past that. Lety just looks like she should be with someone closer to her age, nearly as innocent as she is, in order for it to be believable that her family would bless the union. She wore plastic barrettes for godsake. Fer is definitely closer with his angelic smooth face, but the real life ten years difference between Angelica and Juan, though I know it isn't noticeable for other couples, it really seems noticeable here. Aldo just seems like the old man from the sea to me. They are not a "cute" couple.
Don H is beginning to make me like him again. When Fern told him about that twit claiming to love two men at the same time, he reached over and told him I don't like this. Guess what Rosy neither do the fans.
Aldo may have taken a job as a chef but once again he should be working his butt off at the restaurant not flittering around Conceptos. Chefs work long hard hours but Aldo does a day of cooking in Acapulco leaves for the DF cooks one meal in his new salaried job and now is back meddling in a business he knows nothing about where no one but Fern, Luigi and Marcia ever does a lick of work.
I just hate the fact that instead of fun we are now getting group misery. Not one single major or secondary character in this show except Aldo is happy and if it plays out he will end up being the only unhappy one.
I also found myself really uncomfortable with the Lety and Aldo scenes with her all google-eyed and giggling like a 12 year old. It made the contrast between Aldo's maturity and her grossly annoying immaturity more glaring than ever and added a creepy factor to the whole relationship. When Lety and Fern are together there is a light fun aspect to them and they seem on the same page. With Aldo he always looks and acts too old for her and it is off putting in the extreme.
Diane
I also agree that I hate to see Fernando bowing and scraping. Of course, it is good that he can humble himself, considering his background and looks.
Did anyone but me get really upset with the cuartel (Sarah and PM) being so mean to Fernando when they were talking about how gaupo Aldo is. Knowing how Fernando feels about Lety and that Aldo is Fernando's competition, they just seem to have no empathy and like to turn the knife. I do not like the cuartel in any form or fashion. Wish they would write them out of the script.
I cannot bear the next weeks of Fernando's heartbreak. Also, Aldo did seem smug when he mentioned being chosen by Lety. This would have been a good day for him not to go into the office and give Lety a chance to tell Fernando and give Fernando a chance to recover some dignity. For Aldo to rub that in Fernando's face in public was unforgivably cruel, even if he did assume that Fernando already knew, tact would have been to not bring the subject up. Also, the way Aldo was jostling with Fernando, knowing the circumstances and that Lety had already chosen him was less than kind.
Here's hoping the plot changes soon, I'm more down in the dumps than Don Fernando.
Did get a kick out of Luigi's attempts to be pals with Lety...I think his physical comedy (and Alicia's) are the best. Judy B.
Last night I watched on my old, captionless TV in the kitchen because I was suddenly very excited about washing my dishes. All of them by hand, and very carefully. What does that tell you about how I feel about Aldo+Lety. :) If they keep this up, my whole house will be spotless and I will be soooo skinny.
Angel
You're right about Lety picking the safe way but I have a simple question. How on earth is Fern supposed to prove he really loves Lety. He split with Marcia, told his parents, is giving her space and not putting pressure on her. To me that is proof enough. Aldo's proof - he blabs to the cuartel, pressures her every time he has the chance and sells all his stuff. What does any of that prove.
I think Lety is an immature, spoiled, self-centered twit. Right now she is playing at being in love like we all did in jr. high. All the mushy mi amors are sickening to watch, next thing we know she'll be getting a tattoo. She is playing with her power but she is doing it in a cruel and harmful way, hurting Fern and deliberately using her Aurora persona to hurt Omar. I no longer buy that she is doing this because she is so "innocent".
Johanna
Well, because I'm annoyed with "La Fea" I am not lovingly showering it with attention. I take notes as the show flies by and then consolidate them with an iron hand; two sentences is, in my opinion, as much as the cuartel deserves no matter how much time they spend on screen.
I actually have - I hope - a NEW recapper taking over for me on La Fea starting this coming Monday! She will be less burnt out than I am... heh heh. The inconsistencies of this show (due to its extension) and its glaring turn towards commercialism have taken some of its charm away for me.
Julie, if you want to come over and clean my house during La Fea, you are more than welcome. I'd even feed you ice cream (or my new favorite, Skinny Cow icecream sandwiches).
Not too much to add to all of this commentary, but I do think that Lety went with Aldo for two reasons...1) because her relationship/feelings for Fer scare her and Aldo is the "safer" path & 2) because she wants to test the waters, see what else is out there (as some of you have said before).
In her defense, I've been in relationships where the feelings are so intense you think it's going to consume you. It is pretty frightening to realize that you can get "lost" in all of the emotion. To add to that, she's been burned by Fernando already and I doubt she trusts him fully....not that I agree with it, but I'm sure it is there in the back of her mind.
That being said, her mi amors are driving me crazy and they seem soooo fake. She's acting this way because she thinks it is the way she is supposed to act, but it doesn't seem like there is any real emotion behind it---that would be because, although I think she does love Aldo, she is not IN love w/ Aldo. Of course, I won't even comment on the kissing because no one compares to Fernando's style.
So, here's me, wearing the whole TEAM FERNANDO regalia, waiting for the day the two true love birds will be reunited.
Aldo can call his buyout of Conceptos' debt a sacrifice if he wants, but it's also an investment. He's supposed to be paid back in the end. He just has the financial upper hand for now.
The only rewarding scenes last night were Alicia taking over Marcia's bedroom and Luigi's girl-bonding with the "Orni" Lety. Lety's giggles and kissy-kissy with Aldo stretched my last nerve to the breaking point. Even my husband said Lety was goofy now.
Both her behavior and dress are sliding downhill from the improvements she gained in Aca.
Thanks for all the analysis from everyone as we suffer together.
I think he really wanted to help her and free her like he said.
He probably thought that way she would come to him because I think he really feels she loves him the most.
We of course know that her heart belongs to Fern and she is only choosing Aldo out of safety.
Unfortunately Lety, a lifetime of safety is no match for earth shaking passion with a super hunk like Fern!!!!!
Carrie L.
So... someone's from the South Shore, eh? I'm in New Bedford. (Don't be jealous. ;)
Re: Aldo-Lety relationship in terms of Lety being childish vs a mature weathered Aldo. Call me crazy, but I just don't like that relationship. Old man in the sea is definiately how I picture it. I don't think its an Aldo prejudice cuz I saw the original and I didn't feel the same way against the Aldo/chef character. I see Lety & Aldo together and I'm reminded my first time meeting an older guy. He thought even my walk was too chidlish and hinted that being with him, he would assist in my maturity. I never called him again.
In answer to your question, I am in Natick, home of Grandma's Mincemeat and Doug Flutie.
Hello to Julie in New Bed-fid!
Marie from Mass
Whenever Aldo mentions selling everything, I just think, guess I missed the episode when someone held a gun to his head and told him to do so. He is all old man and the sea and I hate when he refers to it as "our" ocean. God created it for everyone, asshat.
Good thing this is ending soon, I have gotten way too worked up over this one. In my defense, I have not been this way about a show since General Hospital several years ago. (Once the writers ruined that, I went cold turkey no problem because they had no Jaime caliber eye-candy.)
Teresa
If she doesn't end up with Fern, though, I'll be hitting the margaritas pretty hard -- even Ben and Jerry's wouldn't cut it.
Mary in MA
anyway..hee hee hee
You said AssHat...
I've reached a point where I literally cannot stand to listen to Angelica Vale do Lety when she's in full "child" mode. I had to switch the channel so many times last night I think I missed a lot, so thanks Melinama for the great recap. Ok, well part of the switching was also so I could watch Drive (I love Nathan Fillion and don't have TIVO or a working VCR), but I would still have had to turn it even if nothing else was on to watch, just because Baby Lety came on. Please, woman, hook up with Fernando QUICKLY so we don't have to hear that voice any more. Or turn into Aurora forever, at least she speaks like a woman!

played when he proposed to Lety."
It's La Duena De Mi Vida. I love that song!

Teresa
AssHat refers to someone who's head is so far up, they are literally wearing their ass as a hat..
LAURA
Whether he said he loved her or not, I do think he treated her poorly---using her to keep his company and all, but happened to fall in love with her in the process. Of course, as has been pointed out many times before, Lety did willingly go along w/ the cooking the books stuff but flipped sides when she discovered la carta. Anyway, I'm on TEAM FERNANDO, remember, so I can justify pretty much anything that beautiful man does. :-)
Teresa, I used to watch GH off and on for years. I finally gave up on it. Now I'm glad that I turned to novelas, where the stories actually come to a conclusion and I can practice my Spanish.
why do I cry and get depressed for him.
Also looved the explanation about asshat.
Maybe I'm just getting my period.
"Asshat is a slightly trendier and less severe variation of asshole, graphically describing someone who has his "head up his own ass" (i.e., not knowing what's going on), or a variation of "butthead". In the former sense, it is suggested that one is wearing one's ass for a hat. A more modern usage of asshat describes a person doing something stupid, and can apply to anyone: "The boss is up to asshattery because he broke the computer even though he knew he was doing the wrong thing." This meaning was popularized by Something Awful character Jeff K." -Wikipedia
