La Fea Más Bella #262 4/26/07 Al Mal Tiempo, Buena Cara
Omar is thinking about the date he’s made Aurora. He wonders if it’s another trap; maybe he shouldn’t go. On the other hand, what if Aurora does show up? He better go, just in case. Ernesto, a reporter for Televisa comes to see him. Like the rest of Mexico, he is looking for the Mujer Misteriosa and wants Omar’s help. Omar confesses that he doesn’t know who MM is either, but he’s supposed to meet with her, so maybe Ernesto can get some good pics.
Julieta gets a call from Lety, who says she will be working late. Robopop tells mom he’s okay with it, as long as she’s working late with Aldo, but not if it’s with Fern. The cuartel stops by looking for Lety. Julieta tells them she’s still in office. They protest that, actually, Lety already left the office. Sarah, who must have won the contest to have use of her brain for the evening (you see, only one of them can be reasonable at any given time) realizes they just gave Lety up. She clarifies that Lety did leave the office, but later returned. They tell mom and pop that they have realized that MM lives near here. Robopop confirms, saying he even saw her the other night. They ask if they can take turns sleeping over so they can be the ones to discover the MM.
Aurora comes into the restaurant in a bright golden yellow dress. Omar goes over to greet her. He says "It’s you!" She coolly asks if he expected someone else. The other restaurant patrons look on and "Ooooh" in unison. He asks her why she wanted to meet at this place so far and out of the way. She says that, obviously, it’s because everyone is looking for her. Omar says he needs to know everything about her. She says he should be happy with the time she has given him. The photographer takes pics from nearby.
Aldo is at work in the restaurant. He listens to a cute "I love you and miss you" voice message from Lety. Tomas walks in crying and tells Aldo that Alicia rejected his marriage proposal. He is despondent. Aldo suggests flowers, or better yet, a serenade. Tomas thinks it’s a great idea and asks Aldo to go with him.
Omar tells Aurora about his job, which leads to his telling her about the retos (challenges) Conceptos is currently facing. He says his stupid ex-prez is about to sell all his stuff to pay the company’s debts, which he thinks is a rediculous plan. This causes Aurora to fall back in to her Lety voice, but she recovers. Omar says that for a second, she sort of reminded him of someone. Aurora tries to cover her mistake by switching to a coy-buxom-airhead-movie-star voice. She says he betrayed her; she thought he was special, but he is not because, unlike Omar, a real man takes risks. Omar, eager to please Aurora, says he’ll sell everything too if it will make her happy. She tells him to do what he thinks is right. She gets up to leave and warns him against following her. Omar tells photog guy to follow her.
Tomas shows up at the building where I guess Alicia is sleeping tonight. I can’t tell if it’s an apartment building or a hotel. In any case, he shows up with a banda-style band. There are lots of horns, a very large drum, and it sounds best when played loud. [I call it tuncha-tuncha music because of the rhythm, but I actually really like it because it’s easy to dance to, and because it reminds me of my father laughing and having a good time at a family party.] Tomas sings along to the music as best he can, which is not saying much. Alicia does not appear. The neighbors throw a bucket of water at him. Aldo sends the banda away, but Tom, wet and shivering, continues to sing a cappella. Aldo apologizes to the neighbors and drags Tom away.
Fern and Marcia are sitting on his living room floor with wine and a newspaper. Fern says he found an apartment similar to his which is selling for 8 million pesos. He thinks it’s a lot, yet too little. Marcia giggles. Fern asks if she’s okay. She says she is trying to recoup her old self. They laugh and toast to being newly poor.
Aurora unwisely walks by herself down a dark street near her house. The photog guy runs up behind her and stops her. She tries to walk away. He tells he can’t let her get away because the whole world wants to meet her. He won’t let her leave and she begins to yell for help. He holds her back as Sarah runs out of Lety’s house and grabs the photog guy. She struggles with him and yells for someone to call police. Aurora takes the opportunity sneak away. Just then Robopop & Julieta come out of their house to see what the ruckus is about.
Fern brings Marcia some tea but finds she has fallen asleep on the couch. He covers her and kisses her on the head. He walks over to the mirror. Luckily, he has taken down his Lety shrine and cleaned off the mirror, but he opens up a drawer and we see he still keeps a photo of Lety there. He takes out the photo, wishes Lety good night, and kisses her.
While the ruckus continues outside of Lety’s house, Lety is watching from the roof, worrying about what a lío (mess) this is. The lío continues. As they argue on the sidewalk, Aurora sneaks by and runs into the house. The fight breaks up and everyone goes home. Once inside, Robopop and Julieta worry about Lety. They go to her room and see she’s already there. Lety pretends to sleep and even snores for dramatic effect. Pop is satisfied and leaves, but mom stays with Lety. She knows Lety is faking it.
Tomas is having a nice bowl soup. He’s still sopping wet (geez, it was only a little bucket of water!). Aldo is keeping him company. He asks Tomas if he’s sure he wants to marry Alicia. Tomas says of course he does, he thinks of her all day and dreams of her, and the thought of her with another guy makes him crazy. Aldo snickers, which prompts Tom to ask if Aldo ever gets jealous. He asks how Aldo would feel if Lety were with his romantic rival right now. Aldo suddenly becomes very serious. He admits he would be jealous. Tom welcomes Aldo to the world of humans.
Julieta notices Lety’s eyebrows. Lety quickly pulls her glasses on to hide her brows. She tells mom it was Caro’s idea. Mom asks when that happened because Lety’s friends said she was at the office. Lety can’t get her story straight and mom demands to know what’s going on. She asks if it has something to do with Fern and/or Aldo. Lety finally admits she and Aldo are now going steady. Mom is visibly disappointed that Lety didn’t pick Fern. But she adds that she is happy for Lety. On the other hand, she sighs that Fern must be suffering so.
The next morning, Lety comes into her office and calls Fern in. She asks him what’s all this about him selling everything he owns. He wants to know how she knew about it. She says a friend told a friend who told a friend who told her. She looks down and Fern tells her that he’s noticed she always wants to run away when he tries to look her in the eyes. He says that she shouldn’t run from him because they have to work together. Lety confesses that it’s hard for her and she feels terrible about breaking his heart into itty bitty pieces when she dumped him and instead chose a handsome but controlling surfer chef who likes to come across as the nice-guy martyr. [Oh, wait; i think she stopped after "terrible".] Fern says she has nothing to worry about because he intends to respect her relationship with Aldo. But, he adds, he does not want her to be afraid of him, as that will impede their working relationship. He sits on her desk and leans across the desk toward her. He’s still leaning in when he tells her, "See, nothing bad happened." Just then Aldo walks in.
In the vortex, Sara tells her cuartel of her adventurous night with the four, no five guys who jumped an innocent woman… with a gun... and a knife!
Lety nervously explains to Aldo that she and Fern were talking about business. Fern excuses himself and goes back to his office. He pops back out to scowl at Aldo and tell him that if he doesn’t make Lety happy, he’ll have to answer to him (Fern).
Sara continues her highly embellished story. She thinks the woman she saved might be the MM, but she’s not sure because the woman ran away. They decide to double up on watch duty at Lety’s house.
Alicia comes in scratching herself all over. Watching her scratch makes everyone else itch.
Aldo tells Lety that he left many messages for her and she never called him back. She says that they had already agreed they would not see each other so she didn’t realize it would bother him. Aldo points out that, on top of that, he came in and found her in a compromising position. She tells him to trust her, and says that Fern was just telling her that he will respect her and Aldo’s relationship. Aldo apologizes and Lety teases him for being jealous. Goofy kisses ensue.
In his office, Omar talks to the photog guy about last night’s fiasco with Aurora. He failed to find out where she lives. He suggests that Omar find out her address by looking up her phone number. Omar agrees that this would be a good idea if he had Aurora’s home number, but alas, he only has her cell number. On the bright side, photog guy reports that he took lots of pictures of Aurora.
Aldo wants to take Lety to Acapulco. She brushes his suggestion aside and they start playing kissy-face again. Fern walks in and slams his door, then asks if he can come in. Aldo points out that he’s already in. He mutters under his breath to Fern that he should asphyxiate.
Humbo and Ariel walk into Lety’s office [does no one respect the closed door of the presidential office? Geez!]. They want to have a meeting to discuss Fern’s plan.
Ana Leticia comes into the vortex. Alicia greets her. Ana L notes that Alicia looks desmejoradita (deteriorated). Alicia remarks sadly that it’s not easy being poor. Tomas comes in and quickly walks by them. Ana L calls "Hola, guapo" after him. He stops for a second then keeps going. Alicia asks Ana L what happened to her taste. Ana L replies that she likes the exotic once in a while.
The meeting begins and the gang’s all there. Marcia and Omar both say they will sell their stuff in support of Fern’s plan to pay off their debt. This disgusts Ariel, but Omar explains that a MM helped him make the right decision. Bozo/Teresa says she’s sorry but she and Humbo just can’t sell their stuff. Fern says this is a sacrifice he wants to make, but he never intended for them to do the same. He adds that Aldo sold his stuff to help the company, and his noble actions are worth imitating [I am very impresses by Fern's accelerating maturity!].
Ariel says that surely Aldo must have another motive for wanting to save Conceptos. He goes on as usual about how it’s all Fern’s fault. Aldo is surprised that Fern’s family is (mostly) not supporting him. Ariel is insulted and asks Aldo if he is calling them vain. Aldo says he thought the Mendiroels were more united. Ariel takes this as another insult. Aldo points out that they can’t be described as united if Ariel refuses to support Fern. Mature Fern walks over to Aldo and shakes his hand in gratitude.
Photog guy comes into the vortex, presumably to deliver his Aurora pictures to Omar. Sara recognizes him as the attacker from last night and jumps on him. The rest of the cuartel follow suit. In the board room, the execs hear the commotion and come out to investigate. Photog guy explains who he is and that Omar hired him. Marcia can’t believe Omar would go to these lengths to find MM. Omar thinks there is nothing wrong with it, because MM is so great and beautiful. Fern does a "so-so" gesture with his hand to convey where he weighs in on MM’s beauty. Aldo takes advantage of having the entire office all present to remind Omar that he must publicly apologize to Lety for calling her fea. Fern agrees. Aldo and Fern both grab Omar by his collar. He blathers "Lety forgive me it won’t happen again please I beg you." No one thinks he means it so they make him repeat it. Twice! When everyone is satisfied, Lety hugs Aldo and then shakes Fern’s hand.
I just realized Ariel and Ana L did not come out into the vortex. They are still in the board room. Ariel reiterates to Ana L that he won’t support Fern. Ana L is torn between helping Fern and keeping all her stuff. Ariel warns that if she helps Fern, she may even have to give up her ‘operations’. Ana L gasps and holds her breasts protectively.
Back in Lety’s office, Lety is sitting with Aldo. Her cell phone rings. She thought bubbles that it’s not her cell that is ringing, it’s Aurora’s. It’s Omar calling. Aldo says that if she’s not going to answer it, he will.

Aldo kinda worries me...while Fern's fits of jealousy were manic, Aldo has a kind of brooding anger that makes me uncomfortable. And how about him giving Lety a hard time about not answering her phone. I guess the language he used bothered me: " You didn't REPORT". Yuck...I see a future of psychological abuse ahead if Lety stays with him.
Tani
Fern has got the big boy boxers (?) on. I love it; beats crying in the closet.
Chef Farrah (shout out to Beckster) needs a haircut or a hairnet.
Tomas, just sign the papers and commit yourself already.
Teresa
I also don't like that he treats Lety like a child.
I suppose that is one reason she is more comfortable with Aldo than Fern. She is use to being told what to do by Robopapa and feels safe with Aldo.
Why was Alicia scratching?????
Was it some kind of bug bites from the hotel Tomas sent her to?
Carrie L.
Nice that Fer sees Aldo as supportive, but if I was in the family I would be very very very suspicious of Aldo and his motives..after everything that has happened I think you would be waiting for the other shoe to drop.
They're truly better people now that both have moved on.
At last, Omar has to make a public apology to Lety AND both Aldo and Fernando "manhandled" him into doing it. Ha!
Loved Aurora's dress. Lety is doing great as the seductress.
Also I agree with you, Tani, and Carrie that Aldo's "concern"/jealousy is not amusing. It scary.
Kim P.
One of my favorite parts was Al and Alicia together and Al drooling over Tomas!
I love the idea of those two together. She is such a ditz but sort of attractive and would appreciate Tomas for a short time. She wouldn't care anything about his having money, (unlike Alicia whose mind runs on one track).
All I could think of when I saw Alicia scratching was bed bugs.
Carrie L.
I too was touched by the Marcia/Fern scene when he brought her her tea and then pulled the blanket up over her so tenderly. That is the basic Fern that we all saw when he was with Lety in the beginning and why it is so easy to love him.
Aldo's control freak tendency is beginning to appear more and more often but that twit Lety, as someone pointed out is caught up in what she thinks as her first real romance, and isn't picking up the vibe that a more experienced woman would. I do have to laugh every time Fern and Aldo conduct a polite civil conversation and then hiss at each other to asphyxiate/die.
Please, please no more serenatas unless it is Fern singing to Lety. Cats on a bag fence sound better than Tomas.
Poor Tomas & Fernando, they are the heartbreak boys. I feel for them.
Oh and that reminds me Aldo paid off a 6 million dollar debt and now Conceptos owes him 6.5 million because he tacked on interest for a six month loan the Mendreols never asked for. The Mafia charges less and it is called usuary.
Roseanna
I don't think Aldo mentioned a specific figure for interest payments, but he did say that it would be at the "lowest market rate." He's not gouging them at all. That would spoil his self-proclaimed moral superiority.
8 Mil pesos today’s exchange rate = $733,080 or so. Not enough, but a start.
“Julieta notices Lety’s eyebrows” I was surprised her mother didn’t notice the painted-on brows before now. People see what they want to see. Her Dad didn’t see Lety in Aurora’s clothes, though, either.
I had to laugh at Alicia getting bug-bit at the cheap hotel. It reminded me of the bedbug story my grandmother told me about one hotel on her wedding trip to Georgia from the Midwest back about 1923 or so. Grandma was scratching when she met her new in-laws in Georgia. Bedbugs are coming back according to what I have read, and not even in cheap hotels. I am quite sure I had bedbug bites from a very, very expensive posh hotel in Europe the last time I went. I itched all the way home to the Midwest on the planes. They bled a little, too. (Could have been fleas, too, as this was a hotel that allows pets). EW! I was even scratching watching Alicia.
So, if Ana Leticia is interested in Tomas, will that mean Alicia will see him differently? There’s a twist for you!
Oh, boy, tonight we get to see how the phone gets handled. If she answers, will she be Aurora in front of Aldo?
Jeanne
So, I guess bedbugs never completely go out of style. :)
I'm curious about the phone too. I've known some nosy people in my life, but never one who would try to take my phone right out of my hand and answer it for me. I'm not sure whether it's just my regularly-scheduled Aldo-hating, or if I'm newly annoyed with him all over again!
Simon the scarce? Maybe all the games of musical chairs with the leadership of Conceptos and the cuartel spending all their time gossiping left him with no work to do (more likely the contract situation.)
Alicia scratching the fleas or whatever was sort of funny. As was AnaLt's attraction to Tomas. She seems like a girl who could be attracted to any guy who can walk and breathe.
When Tomas came to get Aldo, did Aldo just walk out of work in the middle of a shift?? And I would like to see Aldo show some evidence of work, like sweat or smears of sauce on his jacket. OK funny, the serenade. Tomas looked better, to me, with his wet hair down on his forehead.
Marcia was muy simpatica last night.
If Lety really gazes into Fern's eyes, she won't be able to hide behind her Aldo-screen. It would be like Cuernavaca and other old times. How could you gaze into that face and not feel the power of love?
Angel
Re: Omar's apology.
Picture it, ladies:
Two handsome men browbeat a third handsome man into apologizing for calling you UGLY. And your coworkers are there to share the moment! A dream come true.
Marie from Mass
P.S. About Ana Leticia . . . she may be a dope, but she had enough sense to rest her head on the table during the board meeting.
I was surprised to all of a sudden see Julieta become a member of team Fern. She'd been pushing Aldo from day one but I guess that heart to heart she and Fern had changed her mind. She will go along with Lety's latest "decision" but I think she has huge reservations.
The phone should prove most interesting. If Aldo answers will Omar recognize his voice or just go into a jealous swoon thinking mi Aurora has another man? Will Aldo recognize Omar's voice and throw a jealous fit since he only thought he had to worry about Fern? Will Lety , correctly, refuse to answer the phone and tell Aldo to MYOB, will Lety answer in her Aurora voice and thus let Aldo in on her secret? I find it odd anyway that she she is keeping it secret from him but then I guess all the mi amors have gotten in the way of her saying anything remotely interesting.
Johanna
As far as Aldo and Fernando both manhandling Omar, I have to eat crow when I was complaining about that when it was just Aldo. I may be a tiny wee bit prejudiced.
Since I missed things, did Marcia kick Alicia out after that one night of pirating her room and eating chips in the bed?
What is with Aurora wearing those red carpet formal evening gowns and furs like she is going to a major function just to meet someone for a normal dinner in a restaurant? That is so overdressed that I can't imagine anyone ooohhhing and aahhhing but rather just staring and wondering where you've been. Please! She could have looked just as different and unrecognizable and been dressed in normal sexy clothing., though I do think she looks great.
I've wondered about Alicia's poverty, also, because she probably makes about as much money as the others and they aren't in such desperate straits. Maybe it's precisely because she has so many clothes that is part of the problem. She spent all her money on clothes, makeup, her coche and fine apartment. Although we know she doesn't pay her debts so I wondered. All I can think of is that maybe they can garnnish your wages for debt in Mexico and they're taking most of her salary.
I think in one semi-recent episode, someone pointed out to Alicia that she makes three or four times as much as the other secretaries already. You're right, she spent it (and all of her credit) on clothes, jewelry, etc. which is why they repoed her car.
I don't think they can garnish your wages (if so, they wouldn't have had to repo her car and kick her out of her apartment), but since she's obviously not been making car payments, rent, etc. and can't afford food, where IS her money going?
I suppose that the only expenses she HAS been paying are bus fare, manicures, and touching up her roots.
Or maybe... I'm going out on a limb here... maybe she's sending it all to Papi?
I've been curious for some tome abut where her money goes and I thought about Papi too but she seems to always be making calls to try and get money from him so I'm at a loss. I can't imagine anyone being so dumb that they don't put aside money for food even if you aren't paying your rent, car payments and cell bills. If the hottest chick in the world can't count on some man always taking her out to dinner. With any luck someday we'll find out. It has to be more interesting then the endless mi amors and kissy face routine we are being subjected to at the moment.
Terri
It's funny, my mom is one of 9 kids who grew up VERY poor, and they're almost equally split on how they spend money. Half are very tight with it and good at saving and only spending on needed items, and the other half tend to be a little like Alicia (not to her same degree, thank goodness). So I agree with everyone that she was probably poor and just buys what she wants, never thinks about the necessities (or has a different idea of what's considered "necessary".

Here is a link to a story about bed bugs. I should say that I didn't find any definitive confirmation that tourists that came from Asia were any more likely to spread the bugs than any other overseas area, so I want to now qualify that, as I don't want to spread any false rumors, that's just what I recall someone saying, but in any case, it happens in the nicest of hotels. What a pain. We had eradicated them for quite a while in this country.
