Zorro - April 19, 2007

EPISODE - April 19, 2007:
*Renzo tells Esmy of Diego's shooting - Esmy is in shock and can't believe it - Renzo says its true - after SK asks her questions, Renzo explains the situation to the two of them - Bernardo listens to the conversation.

* MP starts to faint - Fer in shock, shakes MP trying to get her to wake up - MP stops breathing - Fer panics, and carries her out of the room.

* Alej is mortified after hearing from White Buffalo that Fer was responsible for Regina's death. Alej is angry and wants to seek Fer out - Yumi listens as White Buffalo gives him some wise old indigeno advice and calms him down. Alej is still angry - White Buffalo reasons to him to look forward at a new beginning with Yumi, his sister-in-law.

* Dolores watches in horror as Pizarro and the soldiers run through the hacienda main house - Pizarro and men enter MA's bedroom and linger for a moment to gaze at MA sleeping in bed. They leave.

* Pizarro and soldiers catch male servant and beat him up in the kitchen trying to get information on where Diego and Alejandro are. Dolores storms in and objects to the beating because Diego and Alejandro aren't there - Pizarro has his men hold her against her will as he barks that he is under orders to find them - she protests - he tells her the suspicions and charges against Diego and Alejandro - she yells - the soldiers haul her and the male servant away.

* Esmy and SK have a mother-daughter discussion about Diego's shooting - Esmy is worried and turns to tell Bernardo to go find Diego and give him a message - Renzo offers to go with him, but Esmy says it's better for Bernardo to go alone.

* PT has a white light vision while sleeping - he wakes up with the thought bubble that Diego is in trouble, and it involves the search - he takes his walking stick and vows to find Diego soon, very soon.

* MA wakes up and wonders how she got to her bed and why she is naked. She goes to the window and wonders what all the commotion outside is about.

* Gerardo is nervous as he meets with Olmos at the local cantina. Olmos tells him to calm down - Gerardo is still nervous about Pizarro and Montero's search; blowing their plan up in their faces. Olmos is calm and says their plan is moving forward.

* Fer carries MP outside - he tells his guards to escort him and MP to the doctor's house.

* Dena wakes up on the floor, after being knocked out by her brother. The three maids inform her that there was a gunshot outside and that Fer carried MP out of the house. Dena is in shock and still dazed. She starts to process the information as Montero and his soldiers enter the room - Dena is outraged and wants an explanation - Montero tells her he wants information on Fer's whereabouts.

* Doctor examines MP.

* Montero wants information on Fernando - Dena doesn't give him anything - Montero sends the three maids out of the room so he can talk with Dena in private. They argue and Dena mentions the special prisoner - Montero continues the topic and wonders if she knows of Esmy's involvement in the gypsies' escape plan. Dena acts ignorant and baffled. Dena continues to look bewildered and surprised as Montero tells her about the accident outside tonight and then tells her he will wait for Fer. He leaves with his men.

* PT arrives at the cave. He finds the blood on the wall, shouts "Diego!" and runs inside. He finds Diego laying on the floor. PT is worried and carries Diego deeper inside the cave.

* Montero meets with Pizarro about the investigation and search for Diego and Esmeralda. They discuss Fer - Pizarro says he is with MP, who is gravely ill, at the doctor's house. Montero gives Pizarro his marching orders - before Pizarro leaves, Montero asks about the Zorro search - have they found the body yet? Pizarro says have faith, they will find him, with Tobias' help because Tobias owes them a favor.

* PT cares for Diego's wound on his back as Diego lays on the bed inside the cave. PT talks to Diego about Esmy and the plan was carried out successfully.

* Bernardo rides up to the soldiers blocking the trail. They order him to climb down to the ground - he plays deaf and dumb. As they watch, he plays a magic coin trick - they approach - he karate punches them to the ground.

* Esmy and SK continue their serious mother-daughter discussion about the plan and SK thinks it is getting too dangerous, that Esmy should return to town - Esmy says no, she won't leave; Esmy tells her that she's pregnant with Diego's child.

* On the bed, PT takes the bullet from the wound and realizes that it's more grave than he thought. Bernardo runs in and sees Diego on the bed and PT beside him with the bullet in his hand. PT turns and realizes Diego/Zorro's part in the escape plan. They discuss what happens next.

* SK thinks about their separation for so many years - Esmy can't think about separating again - she has completed her mission to rescue her mom from captivity and she is determined not to return to the miserable Montero. Esmy asks SK who her dad was.

* Fer asks doctor for an update on MP's condition.

* SK tells Esmy that her father was a gypsy and a gentleman, was so wonderful and strong, and knew and accepted her origins. Esmy wonders why she ended up with Fer. SK says it was because of Fer's jealousy and vengeance, that Fer killed her father.

* Reina and Duke discuss a special convoy delivery of valuables is being shipped, and it needs extra special protection.

* SK and Esmy continue discussing Fer's part in her lock-up in hell. SK explains the significance of Esmy's pendant - it is the only thing of value she has, all of her fortune is in the pendant.

* Yumi and Alej. are discussing what White Buffalo said about starting over together - Yumi tells Alej that she is ready and waiting for him. Alej looks at Yumi, starts to lean towards her, when a man runs in and interrupts to tell Alej there's trouble at the hacienda.

* Bernardo signs to PT the message that Montero is at the hacienda searching for Diego and Alejandro.

* Pizarro ushers all the gypsies in through the gates - he stops Tomas' widow at the gates and orders her to take a message back to the gypsy camp, that he will round up all the gypsies one by one until he gets the information he seeks, Tomas' widow scoffs at taking orders from Pizarro - Pizarro threatens to do to the gypsies what he did to Tomas if she doesn't obey.

* Montero chokes MA - she struggles to tell him to stop. Montero stops and demands to know where Diego and Alejandro are; he suspects they had something to do with Esmy's disappearance. MA is surprised and thinks this was Esmy's plan to rescue her mom - Montero continues to accuse Diego - MA says Diego is her husband and her problem -- at the end, Montero informs her that Zorro was shot and wounded badly in the fighting. MA's shocked.

* Renzo updates Esmy about Diego and the fighting and that Montero is out of control now. She's worried.

* Montero meets in his office with Pizarro - they discuss Diego being wounded and he current whereabouts. They decide to use the people to locate him. If they catch him, then power in the city with be theirs.

* Diego is heavily bandaged on the bed - he wakes up and sits up - PT is happy that Diego is awake. As he approaches, Diego takes off. PT is surprised and goes after him.

* Esmy dreams of Diego/Zorro. SK asks her what she's thinking - Esmy cries about the sad premonition she is having.

* Diego falls on the ground trying to leave - PT catches up to him, calls him Diego and explans he was seriously wounded and has a concussion. Diego asks "who are you? who is Diego?"
(AY CARAY! Diego has amnesia!)

How very Bourne Identity! The biggest challenge for a while is going to be to get Diego to stay put so the soldiers wont capture him! Then again, I can see him pulling off all sorts of amazing moves with no clue how he learned them while he runs from them.

The gypsies are going to have a heck of a time getting their women out of the prison - hope they can figure out how now that they are Zorroless. Meanwhile, PT's club had already agreed to help SK & her daughter run away. Hopefully they can do that and maybe help the gypsies as well. Guess Diego, like Al, probably won't get to meet his son 'till much later in life.

SK and Q are very similar, but I don't think they're the same actress (I looked, but hair & makeup can certainly be what's throwing me). It looks like she has no clue that she's not the real heir. Perhaps her trip and concerns about the big check for a spy are to show that she actually cares about justice and such things. Maybe they want her to step aside willingly once SK shows up, or to just make her sympathetic. Just a thought.

I thought it was interesting that Yumi said "Dena loves you with her heart, I don't know what it is I feel." She knows it's lust (duh!) and that Al sees Reg in her, but lust and love are not the same thing. Maybe she and Bernie could hook up...just a thought.

Someone had mentioned a while ago something about FS redeeming himself right before his death. If MP dies, chances are he'll blow his brains out. It's a little soon for that though, so I suspect MP will live.

I think I see the opportunity for a "many years later" setup. M

Oh Margarita I hope you are off with the "many years later" idea. I find that so often to be a cop out. I do like your idea that Diego will be doing all this stuff not knowing how, ala Bourne Identity. That would be pretty interesting.

If I didn't think that Pizarro was a closet homosexual, I think he would have made a move on the sleeping Mangle. He seemed to be eyeing her up as she was sprawled across the bed. Then again, maybe Pizarro swings both ways because I kinda got the feeling he was eyeing Leisha, too. How sick would that be, you chop off Miguel's head and then go for his wife.

I'm not liking Fernando's actions, but the acting is WOW!!

Speaking of acting, am I the only one who thinks they guy playing Al is a terrible actor? It's like he has about 4 facial expressions and has to announce in his dialogue how he is feeling so we can interpret the facial expression. I cringe when he's on screen.

Great recap, JR
Just to clarify - Bernardo is deaf, he's not just pretending.

When FT said that Diego's wound was worse than he thought, I thought they were going to go with the soap opera warhorse of paralysis but amnesia is a classic too.

I still think SK and the Queen of Spain are the same actress. When SK told Esme that her pendant was the key to a great fortune, that suggests that something will happen to SK and Esme will have to figure out how to get the fortune.

It's hard to imagine how things are going to get back to normal in old LA. This isn't close to the end of the novela.

Nooooooo Zorro has amensia. I had a feeling he might, he hit his head pretty hard.

I know Mangle is going to use this to her advantage. Was Mangle naked when Olmos took her, I thought she was in her undies.

I wonder what's going to happen, today is going to be intresting.

Thanks for the recap! It filled in for me on the things that I missed. As in, my mind wanders because some stuff just seems so silly...;>

I was actually hoping it was Fernando who had been shot - not because I don't like the character (LOVE him) - but because that would be a twist we wouldn't usually see. But I think MP will pull out of it. And Alej will have even more to be mad at Fer for!

Jeanne:
- Did you mean Bernardo is mute and not pretending? Because he's definitely mute. He pretends to be deaf.
- The actor playing SK is Ana Bolena Mezas; the actor playing the Queen of Spain is Ivelin Giro (also Alej's girlfriend in real life). I got the sense they didn't get too close to the Queen so they can maintain the idea that they look like each other...

Jen

I think 'desnuda'can mean 'undressed' as well as 'naked'.

J. R., thanks for the great recap!

Jean, Bernardo is mute but not deaf. That's his strong suit. It might have been explained (to Esme by Diego) while you were away. He actually can hear fine, but uses his lack of speech to pretend to be deaf. I shake my head every time he "signs." There's no sign language on earth that looks like what he is doing. It's a combination of what we call "home signs," some from American Sign Language/French Sign Language, and some just plain junk gestures. Nice try, director, but no cigar.

I wondered if the Queen might be coming to the new world because the job isn't getting done and she wants to see for herself that any legit competition for her throne is eradicated, including SK/Mercedes and Esme. Olmos has surely communicated about Esme to the Duke.

I think SK's face has some extra padding added to it, or mask-type stuff. It looked a little unnatural to me. I wondered if they tried to make her look puffy as a result of all those years in the mask, and as time goes on and her diet and exposure to the environment bring her back to better health, her facial looks will change a bit and she'll look more like the Queen. I revised my initial thought that they might be twins (though they still could be, but not necessarily identical). It's possible their mothers were sisters and SK's mother should have been Queen but was usurped by a sister. Someone mentioned that the mother was the true Queen (Esme's grandmom) when she took SK and ran. The Reina and SK could be first cousins, ala Patty Duke from the 1970s. Ah, well, they will eventually explain it all, I imagine.

Wonder how long Diego is going to be clueless. Those theories about what will happen during his amnesia are good, and PT will be at his wits' end trying to contain Diego, who is really a lethal weapon.

Jeanne

Yes, Bernardo is allegedly mute and not pretending, but he is not deaf, Jen. That came out in the early part of the story. He apparently reads and writes well, too, which would have been unlikely for a deaf person of the era when education for deaf kids was not universal by any stretch.

A point of trivia: education of the deaf began around the 1600s in Spain, with individual monks tutoring the deaf scions of wealthy nobles, because if they couldn't read and write Spanish, they couldn't inherit anything. So, deaf education was born in Spain. The first real school for deaf children was established in the late 1700s by the Abbe Sicard or the Abbe d'Epee (I never remember for sure) in Paris. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet went to Paris to study the methods and brought back at least one deaf French teacher to start the American School for the Deaf (current name) in Hartford, 1817.

Bernardo, though, is allegedly mute according to what Diego told Esme when he told her he is Zorro, early on.

Jeanne

I suppose in that era being in one's undies would be equivalent to being very undressed.

Jeanne

Thanks for the clarification on Bernardo. I either missed or forgot that he wasn't deaf.

Didn't Bernardo have his tongue cut out or something ghastly of that nature?

I loved it when he took out those two soldiers by himself! Go Bernie!!

If anyone can contain the lethal weapon that Zorro is-it is PT, who seems pretty skilled himself...
jb

Well I thought this novela was racing along too well. Now it looks as though Diego will have amnesia, and Montero and Pizarro will get Tobias to be "bad Zorro" as a get-out-of-jail-free card.

I also was confused by Mangle seeming nude in bed when the last time we saw her was being schlepped around the town by Olmos in her period undies.

I fervently hope there's no "years pass" thing about to happen. The only time I think this works is when it's to advance a flat-stomached heroine to a scene of her labor. Amor Real did it really well with having Mathilde walk through the plaza getting progressively bigger.

Oh for pete's sake, amnesia??? Lord I hate that trite device.

Cathy, I gotta admit, when Osvaldo Rios is on screen, especially without his shirt, I'm not looking at his face. (Yes, I am very shallow.) But whatever his expressions or lack thereof, I still think he did the best bug-eyed Muy Impactada look so far. I swear I thought his veins were going to pop.

About Bernardo, I'm not sure we know why he is mute in this Zorro, but in Allende's book he chose to be mute as the result of a childhood trauma, seeing his mother murdered by pirates. Technically and physically he could speak, but he never (hardly ever) did.

I also think SK's face looks weird. I just assumed it was some funky plastic surgery. I hope it's makeup.

Jeanne, thanks for historical data on deafness. That's fascinating!

Great recap J.R. thanks!!

I forgot to thank Jody for the great recap.

Mari thanks for spreading the word about our blog to the Univision and Telemundo blog pages. Oops on the comment about Osvaldo Rios' acting (hate to offend if he ever happens to wonder in on this blog).

I hope the backstory about Bernie comes out, I think it would be very interesting and I think he's a great character. His mom being killed by a pirate could be interesting (just hope it wasn't Capt. Jack Sparrow).

So there are two different actresses playing the Queen and Sara Kali. They are very similar in their appearance, good job with casting the two as distant cousins.

Also, thanks Jeanne for the historical info on teaching children/people who are deaf. I like to learning new and interesting facts. you and your knowledge are such an asset to this site. :-)

Sylvia and Cathy, thanks. I'm not a jack of all trades, but I get a kick out of education of the deaf (and the blind, my first field, but I am more focused in deafness at the moment. I also get involved in deafblindness). I always enjoy learning from all the rest of you, too!

Jean, as I said, I think you were away (Mexico or Latin America?) when they gave us just a flash of back story on Bernie. I agree with those who want to see more of his back story. In one version of Zorro, Bernardo's tongue had been cut out for some punishment, but I don't remember them saying it in this version. It might have been the Disney version I saw as a child (or young adult). They don't always discuss why he is mute. I don't remember seeing that his tongue is weird here, but they don't give you much of a glimpse of it. He does keep his mouth fairly well closed, maybe so they don't have to deal with this from other Zorro versions.

Jeanne

It should have been learning or like to learn, not like to learning in my earlier post. I really need to practice proof reading more often.

Wouldn't it be an interesting twist if Diego gets his memory back only from childhood and wants to be Tisha and return to White Buffalo again? Then he might remember the one-eyed man killing his mother and go after FS.

Jeanne

Ooooooh...good one Schoolmarm!

There have been a lot of takes on Bernardo over the years, the one detail remaining consistant (in most cases) is that he is mute, pretending to be deaf. For most people, the definative 'Nardo was the Disney one, who was positively brilliant. The Disney "bible" explained that 'Nardo was born that way, but can get away with pretending to be deaf because he's an outsider, unknown to the community before he came from Spain. But Disney studios themselves added a new twist in their sequel series, "Zorro and Son". This time, Diego is in his 50's, with a grown son named Don Carlos, and Bernardo (still with us) apparently really isn't mute at all, but was having the De la Vegas on all those years for undisclosed reasons of his own! 'Nardo is full of surprises, isn't he?
