Destilando 7/18: in which it is proposed that Minerva go on a dream cruise.
Gav is in a bar, about to be forcibly ejected by management, when a bunch of old duffers ogle her and suggest she give them her encyclopedia pitch over a cuppa. After enjoying the eye candy, one suggests they gamble for an outcome: if she wins, he'll buy an encyclopedia. Since she's broke, he accepts her offer to sing should she lose. She loses and sings with the mariachi band which rises out of the conveniently situated bar stools just behind her. All applaud.
There is a sober meeting of tequila dudes. Anti-terrorism measures and increased regulation will squeeze out the little guys first but the big guys eventually, along with various other related businesses (I wasn't very excited about the poor PR guys losing their jobs).
Rod recommends teamwork; they will try to get government dispensations.
At the end of Rod's part of the meeting Zaldivar (I think), the tequilero with the moustache who was tender with Gav/Mariana long ago, pulls him aside and says he had coffee with her recently, and that Fedra and Minerva had called all the tequileros and said Mariana was sacked for fraud and for mismanaging money.
Rod angrily says it's a lie, Mariana never stole. When Zaldivar continues: "She claims she was thrown out without her final payment," Rod says angrily that Aaron gave her a huge wad of cash. "Then why is she selling encyclopedias in the street?" Zaldivar asks rhetorically.
Rod says everything that happened to her was her own fault, she acted in bad faith. Zaldivar says gentlemen don't badmouth women this way and repeats that Fedra and Minerva closed all doors to Gav with their machinations. They also said she was responsible for the destruction of two marriages. Rod angrily says he doesn't care. (Actually he says no vale un comino, comino is "cumin," see destilando cafe's comment below) He thought-bubbles: "Gaviota, you professional perpetrator of lies and betrayal!"
Elvira (remember her?) remarks that Rod is remarkably less excited about the coming of his new child than Aaron was about his.
Aaron chats with Johnny Molina (his gangster in Miami) about business/money troubles; they have to get Turquoise Tequila into Europe right away. Pamela is dressed correctly again, in a bikini, in case you were worried she would start wearing real clothes. Aaron ravishes her (I assume) on the pool table.
Minerva cries a lot. Patricio points out she isn't eating and, in fact, hasn't eaten since she signed the divorce papers. "If you get sick, Pam will be happy. Stay pretty!" "Why, if I'll never see Aaron again?" "Don't let that macho egoist kill you - if necessary I'll be here breakfast, lunch, and dinner to make sure you eat." "He'll be happy, a new wedding and a baby, I'm nothing but a dog." "Don't satisfy his ego by lamenting, make him crazy jealous, go on a cruise."
When she says she's too depressed for a cruise, he suggests a pretend cruise - "I'll take care of it for you, I'll see to it Aaron and Fedra think you're on a Greek Islands cruise for solteros (singles) only. If you change the rules of the game, he'll go crazy, he always wants total control."
Boring debates with Pilar: are all the lies they've told Rod a good idea? Fedra is sure they are. Dani has left town to go dance elsewhere, disgusted because they've muzzled her with vague threats about Pilar croaking from anxiety if the frijoles get spilled.
Rod shows up and tells Fedra to quit telling lies about Mariana. "Oh, should I instead tell everyone she was an imposter who boinked both Montalvo brothers and was hired with false documents?" He tries to call Dani but she won't answer the phone: "Sorry, brother, but if I were to pick up, I'd tell you everything..."
Sofia, Frankie in tow, visits Isa. By sheer happenstance (not) Frankie has Sofie in an ostentatious liplock when Isa opens the door. Sofie congratulates Isa on her pregnancy, Isa says she's nauseated and rushes off.
Frankie leaves ("you ladies must need time for woman talk") and Isa lies to Sofia: "Gee, I never asked Rod to bail out my gambling crook of a daddy, Rod just offered, and daddy will go to NYC as soon as he gets out of the pokey and he'll start paying back what he owes." We will not be holding our breath.
Rod returns to the apartment with a little box of chocolates or something for pregnant wifey. He tells her they can't leave first thing in the morning, he has another meeting with the tequileros, this worries Isa, she thoughtbubbles: "They better not say anything that will incriminate my team."
Sofia wants the four of them to go out celebrating, Rod says sure, Sofia asks Isa to convince Frankie to come along because she (Sofie) wants to cut a rug with him. (Probably a gavotte.)
In a corner, Isa hisses: "Frankie, I don't want you kissing and caressing Little Miss Muffet, it makes me crazy." Frankie, exultant: "Does this mean you haven't forgotten me?" He continues with the public display of affection, and have you noticed Sofie's dresses are lower-cut than they used to be? Sound of Isa's teeth grinding.
James is an absolutely intolerable treacly fiancé. I hear enough horrible Spanish accents in my weekly conversation class, I don't need to hear this on Univision. "Honey, I'm home!"
Acacia is wearing one of Sofia's castoffs, no, I'm sorry, it's a brand-new awful dress, way too big for her, in a hideous color (royal blue) with a strange lace collar, she cheerfully burbles that she bought a bunch of clothes today, Meester James asks sternly: "Where'd the money came from?" "It's from a box of money I found in Meliton's room." "But when he gets back he'll be mad, I'll pay your expenses." "But these poor few pennies are mine too!" "OK. Anyway, I saw Father Cosmo, when Rod gets back in town we can set the date, let's have a huge wedding." "Oh, no, something simple." "OK then, honey, just our few bestest friends." James whips out some ugly flowers. What a loser!!! What a tool!
Frankie's ma (Jose), Clarita's buddy, comes for a visit and hauls in the TV Clarita gave her when Gav, back in the flush days, brought home the now long-gone huge flat-screen tv. They hook it up and sit to watch Clarita's favorite novela, because "a day without my show is just en blanco." They discuss the wedding and kiss that conclude every novela and compare Gav's life with this pattern. "But my daughter never got the wedding dress."
Jose reminisces: when she, the young Jose, was gotten pregnant in the big house by Maximilio de la Vega, the Massa and Missus threw her out on the street and sent their son to Europe! The only thing she got out of it, besides of course her son himself, that desgraciado (she didn't call him that, she's pathetically loyal, it's an editorial comment), was Maximilan's apellido - legal last name - "de la Vega," of which Frankie is inordinately proud.
By then they've yakked so long the show is over, but Clarita says it's ok because Jose's story is just as good. "And yours, Clara, no doubt better than a novela too." Clara agrees but doesn't want to discuss it right now, and does Jose know anybody with washing and ironing Clara can do?
Patricio recaps his scenes with Minerva for the benefit of his fiance, who gives him carte blanche to hang out with Minerva, poor dear, as much as is necessary.
Minerva cries in bed, remembering Aaron's hard little pig eyes glinting when she caught him in the Jacuzzi with flutes of champagne and with Rubberlips. "He'll pay dearly!"
Bruno is disgusted by his wife Fedra's smug pleasure. "How long do you think this relationship with Pamela will last? It has no future, it's a mixed benefit." (?)
Isa and Rod dispiritedly watch Sofia and Frankie do the Watusi. Isa wants him to try dancing with her but he refuses, saying he doesn't want to be ridiculous, thoughtbubbling about the time Gaviota took him in hand and taught him her special indigenous native dances... complete with hair flipping...
Frankie and Sofia return to the table all happy. Frankie asks Rod for Sofia's hand in marriage! "Caray, I'm not the one to ask, you should ask Pilar." "I just wanted you to know my intentions are serious." Isa pipes up: "As I understand, you don't have a job. How do you intend to support her?" Cymbal crash.
Next episode, Friday: More trouble of course! What more do you need to know?

Outstandingly speedy recap!!!! "Un comino"--cumin comes from comino seeds which are small--in English we use "mustard seeds"--think Biblical reference here. No me importa un comino--I care very little.
OK, Acacia is not 100% selfish with the money--she bought James some clothes. But the only thing that makes me cringe more than these two together is watching Gaviota continue the Walk of Shame. And Clarita frying a single tortilla in a cheap metal pan--like there's nothing else for dinner. Ay, Caray. They actually used that word tonight!"
after her mother but the boy will look like the father.
And Isa got nauseous and left. It felt like a veiled threat or did I read it wrong?
Ummmmmm so is Fedra the big evil brain behind everything...methinks it is a possibility...& I guess lil Isa is jealous? I don't hate Isa & Frankie quite as much cause at least they think Sofie is as big a simp as I do. Maybe Isa really has feelings for Frankie, but yeah living in a one room apartment frying the one torilla would not be fun...as life with Frankie would be.
Acacia..I am gonna send you a years sub. to the Spanish version of Seventeen, watch the mail box
PLEASE....ANYONE??? Hope I didn't miss it.
Sorry for posting here but nowhere else to post at this point.

Spiffy and quick. Eduardo held his own with Rod last night. I had Eddy figured for a wimp after what he told Gavi about not being willing to hire her the last episode. Hubby's theory: Rich Rod is a spoiled brat in an adult body, so wealthy he has never had to think about the consequences of his actions on others, their true suffering, because he never has to answer to anybody, except Grammy Pilar who is just as shallow and empty as he is. Rich Rod has his "little people" to do that for him. His compassion is only a reflection of what others suggest from moment to moment and/or manipulate him into believing it should be.
Good point Carmella, about Gavi having more reasons to be hurt than Rod. But, what's with the regression back to the farm days? Except for the way she dresses, she's retained nothing she's learned.
Wowee Jardinera, your hubby nailed a good theory...

Does James know Acacia put the pitchfork thru the uncle in the barn? I thought he told Rod that the uncle was away on a trip? Agree on cringe time for those two character. They come across as a brick shy of a full load..Even though it's a novela,it's very uncomfortable to watch the interaction of the two characters..The real life James is the boyfriend or husband of Marcia from La Fea Mas Bella..I can see the those two together..They're a good match.
Well, Rod is being stubborn and stupid as usual. And why won't Dani just spill the beans and forget about granny Pilar?
Now we have to wait for Friday to see what's up! Caray!
Rod - he is so hard to change his mind but if he's changed it already - painful process to change it again. If Dani tells him what she knows it might be a knock to believe into something but she is afraid that abuela will be disappointed and better not to say anything. Hmm, she was more rebellious before and didn't care much about anybody's "disappointments". At least we could count on her. Hopefully she will be back to be herself.
Remember the De La Vegas that granny mentioned - probably Frankie is actually related to them as his mother told her story. And Clarita still holding her skeleton in the closet - probably it will be there until the end of this telenovela.
James in his outfit and Acacia in her new dress match perfectly - I' just wonder: he was an englishman, all his live lived in London, how he can changed soo much to be able to wear this stuff. We almost never see anybody dressed the way James dresses, only some poor rancheros - and not all of them - or sudents in his tequila school.

I bet the Duelo Cristina (assuming there is one) will be Monday night. The Cristina shows for Heridas and Mundo were the Monday after the show ended. Duelo just ended this week, so it'd be next week's Cristina.
And can I say that I am REALLY sick of Destilando geting pre-empted once a week? There, I said it...
i agree with beckster in regards to rod's confusion. i understand his perspective, because he's the most confused. it's not like everything else in his life is doing great. he's pressuerd from every corner: isa with 'his child', responsibilities of the hacienda after his parents death, sofie (and dani) depending on him, guilt about marrying someone he doesn't love, his family pressures, etc. his world is collapsed and that does affect someone's decision making. now to that, add some impulsiveness, and a vile lie of your cousin in front of his wife and the family, and the only person that can help you clarify the problem has run away. it gets complicated and confusing ;)
in any case, the whole reason for this novela is miscommunication :) though i do see that rod is an impulsive man and that has led to all his problems. if he hadn't believed gavi was a prostitute from the beginning, he wouldn't have married. ah, the life of novelas.
hmmm...i don't see why acacia is selfish to use meliton's money; after all, he got it from her land and exploited her money all this time and i'm sure she never saw a penny of it. poor meester james.
I guess it's still possible that it could be on next Monday...
FYI, I just received my CD of the music from Destilando and it's great - much better than the average telenovela. You can find it on amazon.com.
Thanks for all the great recaps!

Who do you think might be Gavi's daddy? Also, there's a portion of the herencia that hasn't been disclosed. My bet is there's something in there for his unknown child with the woman he had an affair. Sorry to spoil it, but if you didn't know, I couldn't resist.
Lulu
hmmm...maybe the testamento would also say rod's adopted?? but then why is he so similar (personality) to his dad and grandpa?? nah, i think the producers are trying to trick us into thinking the obvious, but are going to change things at the end... ;)

Is it faulty writing or why did both Rod and Gavi tell each other never to forget how much they loved each other and then promptly throw that sentiment overboard? That just grates on me.
As for Gavi, she refused to see what was in front of her face: Rod specifically was NOT hiding out at the hacienda but was in fact back in the city trying to get in touch with her and she told herself all sorts of wild ridiculous things. I think she has/had inferiority complex and conflict avoidance issues. Even when she finally called the distillery she never asked for the details, just assumed the worst from the vague answer James gave her as an "anonymous" member of the public, rather than some fake but credible-sounding insider with a right to know more of the nitty-gritty.
I think Pilar was unhappy her entire marriage (of 50 years), but I don't believe Amador necessarily started to fool around with the jimadora till his kids were a bit older. We assumed when she told Rod that she went through a period similar to Isa's that it meant at the beginning of her marriage, but it could have been rough going and then he strayed during an early mid-life crisis. I could always be wrong. = ? .

gift that is very generic and the type of gift that shows no imagination--so that goes along with how Rod feels about his marriage. I laughed when I saw what the gift was!
I cracked up at Elvira's comment last night. She hasn't gotten to do much lately, with Gaviota gone and few opportunities for gossip, but she actually stayed behind in that room in order to make a snide comment about Rodrigo... to herself. Priceless!
I'm voting for cousen.

It's also possible that Amador's amante was a friend of Clarita's, or a friend of Clarita's mother. And perhaps as a result, he and Clarita were very close friends, but not lovers. That would explain how Gavi knows the song (Clarita taught her the friend's song), how Gavi isn't related to Rodrigo, and why Amador was attached to Clarita
I doubt that that's it either, truthfully. I think there was a baby swap, too. Maybe multiple babyswaps! Maybe it was Clarita and Bruno who got switched at birth, or... I don't know. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be something really lame!
Rod is making a mockery of his already mocked marriage, so his little one will have a great example of what marriage is suppose to be.
Based on the two novelas I've seen so far, I'm setting my expectations for a lame ending, but hoping to be pleasantly surprised...
jb
Also agree that there must be a baby swap involved -- somewhere!
1. Can one legally marry an aunt? I think that cousins can marry. I know that there is a difference between what is legal and what is risky.
2. What is "helado". My small dictionary seemed to think it was ice cream! But the partriarch decided to return to his hacienda and ignored the fact that there was "helado" in Brazil - something for which he had waited a long time. I guess the issue was that the price of coffee would go up and Colombia would profit.
Gaitan was approached to write a story about the coffee industry and guess that the story was secondary. This is what I find so interesting - the background of coffee or tequila.
Incidentally books are really cheap now. I bought about 6 Spanish books for about $90 at Borders. This will keep me busy for a while ..
I've skimmed the book - some characters do differ but the major plot is the same.
$>{8 ? )
