Juan Q 7/18 - Self reflection is in the air

So finally Moni outs with it. They are going to have a child. CL is of course muy impactado. He asks if she’s sure. She said she had tests done at the doctor’s of course she’s sure (you idiot). He thought she gave up the idea to be maternal. She replies that maybe she never thought hard about it, but now it’s here and she thinks it should be her priority. She says it’s now or never. He continues that he never saw her raising kids. She’s so critical of all her friends. She says well I didn’t know, it’s something that suddenly awakens you. He says maternal instinct, ha!. She thought he would be happier and wants to know what’s wrong.

Aliro finds Nidia with the paintings and tells her that he didn’t know she liked to paint. She says she doesn’t guess who does, that lover of my husband!!! He says wow, she’s not bad and wonders what they are doing here. She says he bought them and hung them here! Perafan admires the boldness of Samuel to decorate his house with the work of another of his lady friends, but wants to know how she knew they were Ana’s and she tells him she saw Ana making the same ones in her house. She says you should have seen how she flattered herself that she sold so many of her works a while back, well yeah to Samuel so he could hang them in my house! Some artist! She says we have to teach her a lesson. He says but he doesn’t know anything about painting she says we have to give them back to her. He thinks that’s noble of her that she gives them back if she doesn’t like them. She says no you are going to. He wants to know why, and she says because he’s being “bocon” a big mouth.

GAYtan asks Juan if he had fun and he says yes except for the hair cut place. Juan says until Tues. Pastor says not so fast what about tomorrow? Juan says he’s busy for his cousin, he has to bring the kids to the park. Pastor asks if he still needs the loan. He says of course, so he tells Juan that he will take the kids to the park at 2 and later go to the movies. Juan says the movies? Juan says fine, in fact let your mother chose it then.
Pastor says we’re not going with Mom, we’re going alone!

He tells himself that it’s one thing to go places with the mom but another to go alone with Pastor to the movies! He just remembered the things he used to do with his girlfriend at the theater in his pueblo!! It sends chills through his body thinking about it!!!!

Moni and CL continue discussing the new addition and she asks if he’s ready for this. He says well the decision is made already. She says no, it’s both of our decisions. He says well you should have thought of that before you committed this crazy error. Moni says she doesn’t think it’s an error, and of course gets upset. About time!

Moni was expecting a different reaction from CL. She thought he would support her more, but now she sees that their relationship has been very selfish. CL looks impactado.

Paula calls her Mommy to make her feel better. She says she’s tired and a little depressed. Mom is not buying the tired bit and wants to know what’s up. She says Paula only seeks her consolation when she has problems. She asks if CL has something to do with her problems.

Ugh. OK, somehow when I paused for commercial, I didn’t record this next segment, so I’m going off memory and the details are fuzzy.

Man to man…Perfan asks if he can have a conversation with Juan. He continues that he will become step Dad of Marely after he marries Nidia, and he sees Juan interested in her and he’ll have to protect her. Juan says something about it not mattering because she’s not interested in him anyway. Alirio says well if you care for her you have to fight for her and not give up, and he says look at him, he finally got Nidia. He says the women in this family are difficult but not impossible. Juan says that not everyone has that kind of luck.

Back at the steelhouse. CL goes upstairs and asks Moni what she wants him to do. She expected him to at least be supportive. He crawls into bed and says he wants to still give her that hug and a child is the best thing that could happen to them. She says really and he says yes he is feliz feliz feliz………but his eyes say no…..maybe it was that rolling of them that tipped me off….

Later they go to bed, but CL can’t sleep. He’s thinking of Paula. Coinicidently, Paula can’t sleep and is caressing the pillow where CL slept.
We then see Juan flipping violently in his bed. He can’t sleep either. He must be thinking about Marely or himself.

The next morning he makes pancakes in his shorts and boots and an apron . He knocks and tells MArely that her breakfast is ready. She says she’s coming, he jumps away like a rabbit complete with spring noise.

Perfan shows up at Ana’s house. He says he’s got something that she’ll be happy to have back. She is of course skeptical. He gives her the paintings. She recognizes them but wonders what he was doing with them.

Juan asks Marely to close her eyes that he prepared a surprise for her. He hands her breakfast and she says, you made all this by yourself? He smiles. She says fine I will have breakfast with you but it doesn’t mean anything. She also says that since you have made me your accomplice fine, I won’t say anything but that doesn’t mean that I agree with you. He kneels down and tells her something about just being a man in love. She very nicely says, look, nothing will ever happen between us, simply because you aren’t my type. He’s a bit impactado by that.

Perafan tells Ana that Samuel bought all her paintings and displayed them in his family’s house. She tells him that ok fine he’s succeeded in affecting her and he can go now. He wonders what the problem is. She says well Nidia gave you these to give to me, right? He says yes, so what. I still though that you would like to know how wonderfully thoughtful Samuel was to have bought all these from you. She yells at him to get out and practically beats him up to get out. After he’s gone she throws one of her paintings.

Juan cries in his bucket as he washes his car and rehashes the breakfast conversation that he’s not her type. His thought bubble said something about maybe showing her who her real type is.

If you have anything to add on this segment feel free.

Ok tape back on now.

CL calls Paula in Taxco, but when Moni walks in and asks who he is talking to he hangs up. Paula comes in to take the call but finds the dial tone. So she calls him back on his cell phone. By this time he’s eating breakfast with Moni and he takes the call saying he called just to find out how it was going there but acts very funny and Paula says it’s going fine and ah, you are with your wife. He says something nonsensical and she tells him she has to go and hangs up.

He then tells Moni, yes it was Pastor. She wonders what he was going to tell her before she sprung the news about his spawn. He says oh, well, you already said it. I was going to tell you about cutting back on your travels and constant absences. She asks if he missed her and he said a lot. She says every day she loves him more. Odd considering his reaction to the baby news. Hmm, he’s thinking the opposite.

Pastor and Juan are at the movies and Pastor assures him he’ll enjoy this flick though the critics didn’t. Juan’s thinking about something else. Pastor asks him what’s wrong. He says to himself there’s no way he can tell him it’s because Marely left him him with one wing and with his tail between his legs. I think it’s like she cut him down to size.

Anyway, he makes up a story that it’s about money and his family, and that he feels bad being at the theater and that he can’t do anything for them and he told them not to count on him. Pastor wonders why he said that, and it’s because he hasn’t yet gotten his salary and when he does there won’t be much left anyway for him. Pastor says tomorrow he’ll have it and with his advance he’ll have enough to give to his family. Pastor ensures that he will take care of the advance.
Juan says he's like a mother, er father to him and gives him a big hug. Pastor says for a good friend he’ll do anything. He says he hopes knowing this Juan will enjoy the film more. Juan throws popcorn, falls asleep, and eventually leans on Pastor. He smiles blissfully. Juan wakes up and realizes that he’s slept on Pastor and moves away but Pastor keeps smiling. He says to himself here it’s like in a small boat if you snooze you lose. Eventually Juan smiles back.

Nidia comes in to see Marely working on her computer and asks her what her face is for, it’s the face she gets when things don’t go her way and she says it’s a love pain. Mare asks how that can be when she doesn’t even have a boyfriend. Mom says even if she’s half crazy she’s still Mom and she knows. Mare just smirks.

Pastor tells Juan to call him by first name outside of the office. Juan says that he has the same respect for him inside and out of the office, and he’ll try, but it’s very difficult. Pastor tells Juan he had a great weekend and can’t remember the last time he felt so calm.

He does ask if Juan did all this just to get the loan and says that if he tells him the truth, nothing will happen. Juan of course denies this and says the outing was already planned. Pastor confesses that even if he didn’t agree to go out with him he still would have given him the advance. He doesn’t want him to think he’s blackmailing him. [Afraid of what the confession might be, Juan said to himself for Pastor to water it down because he’s not going to sprinkle it and it’s better to give confessions to the priest.] Pastor shakes his hand but doesn’t want to let it go.

Paula returns home from Taxco. She says the seminar was very productive. It taught that even when one thinks they can handle anything and know everything there is to know, they made us face situations that showed us otherwise and at least one leaves thinking differently. She says she’s really hungry.

Juan has a discussion with his favorite audience again. He tells himself he doesn’t really know what’s happening to himself right now but he knows he not happy with himself and what he’s doing, and with telling so many lies he’s forgetting who he really is. He says his life, if you can even call it that, is built on top of so many lies and falsities that without realizing it he will be opening the abyss and sooner or later he will fall in. He is consumed, and the worst of it all is that with every advance he is getting further away from what he really wants. Where are you my little dove, where? We flash to Paula as he says this.

All of a sudden Paula isn’t hungry anymore. Her Mom wonders why she’s still depressed, and isn’t there something you want to tell me? She says no, I’m just tired. Well her mom says since you weren’t here I had some time to think, and I think we are going to live in the US.

Mama thinks Paula will find something better in the US, for starters at least you are paid in dollars. She says nothing is better than your country and your people. The mom says what people, there’s only you and me. Paula says she has good work so she doesn’t know why all of a sudden she wants to leave. Ana says she feels useless. Paula says she’s not, there is plenty of work she can do, she could even dedicate herself to painting. Ana say no way and we get a rehash of the whole Sam buying them thing.

Perfan too rehashes to Nidia who says how happy she would have been to have seen Ana’s face when she found out the truth. Nidia says that woman has to pay. Alirio warns her that she really should just leave well enough alone and stop bothering this woman because Nid is the one who is going to end up paying for what she has done. He keeps telling her that that woman wants nothing to do with the past and to leave the poor woman alone. Nidia is mad that he’s on the other side. He swears he’s not, that he’ll always be on her side, but this woman isn’t worth her time. Nidia wants her out of the country and ends up saying she really just wants her to lick her shoes (kiss her feet).

Ana tells Paula that she thinks Sam bought all these to make her feel better and now she has no faith in her painting, in her work. Paula wants to know how she got them back. Then she figures it out. Nidia. She is upset that this woman is still bugging them and she vows to do something about it and she figures too, that this is why the sudden interest in moving to the states and she’s not standing for it. I guess we'll see how mad she really gets. last time she backed down but I suspect a Nid/Pau confrontation is on it's way..... :)

Thanks! I howled with delight while Juan was making breakfast for Marely in (1) his boots (2) his shorty shorts (3) a frilly apron. Dancing and flipping pancakes. Ahh.

Kris, thanks for the terrific recap! For not having it on tape, you’ve got a terrific memory of the “lost part.”

Geez, Louise. If I had been Monica, I would have thumped CL for his less than overwhelming response to a pregnancy announcement. He’s such a slimeball.

I had to chuckle at Alirio’s praise of Ana’s artistic ability. He’s so clueless! What would make him think that Nidia wanted to hear that? Maybe Ana will realize that Samuel did his best to keep her ever-present in his life, even to putting her artwork throughout his home. Tacky, but a bit romantic…..I hope she’ll decide to try and sell them again. Ana did a terrific job of controlling herself when he took them back to her house and told her that story about Samuel buying them all.

Pastor at the movies with Juan was both a chuckle and creepy. Juan throwing popcorn up and catching it in his mouth was so….JUAN!

“She thought he would support her more, but now she sees that their relationship has been very selfish.” How many years have they been married and she’s just now noticing this? Or, was she on the road too much to notice it?

“he says yes he is feliz feliz feliz………but his eyes say no…..maybe it was that rolling of them that tipped me off….” LOL! Maybe!

“We then see Juan flipping violently in his bed. He can’t sleep either. He must be thinking about Marely or himself.” Or, he’s thinking of Pastor and the movies…..

Oh, yes! Juan in his boots, shorts that disappear under the apron, and tank top……I howled and hooted, and my husband thought I was cracking up. Actually, I was.

Suddenly the Paula/CL/Monica situation with the baby announcement is looking suspiciously like Ana/Samuel/Nidia. Hoo, boy.

“Juan has a discussion with his favorite audience again. He tells himself he doesn’t really know what’s happening to himself right now” LOL! He is so cute when he’s doing this. He’s so cute most of the time, actually. But he is right that before long it will cave in on him.

“Mama thinks Paula will find something better in the US, for starters at least you are paid in dollars.” I couldn’t believe the writers put this in. It sounded like a real indictment of life in Mexico for the middle class.

Kris, I like your term "steel house." CL and Moni's house is as cold and devoid of warmth as their relationship. Nevertheless I feel bad for Monica for having the horns put on her.

Nice job translating Juan's introspective monologue. I didn't quite get what he was saying but what you wrote makes sense. Interesting...he is beginning to sense the anvil hanging over his head.

I agree, Cesar is a complete slimeball. Why did he answer his telephone at the breakfast table? Why did he try to call Paula while in his house? He could be a lot sneakier if he tried. Is he trying to get caught?

Ana is a much better painter in JQ than Angel was in Duelo.

Thanks Kris!!
