Pasion Friday Feb 8 - Memo to Santiago: Camila is not YOUR wife

Lis talks to Ric and then when she is out in the hallway, she loudly says that he’ll regret what he has done. But OOOPS – her blindness betrays her, she didn’t realize someone was standing there in the hall. It’s Pablo. She says she was just upset, please don’t say anything about what she just said. She was over there swearing to God, her dead mother and father and all that is holy, but really heh heh I didn’t mean it. Pablo says he will keep his mouth shut. I’m not sure if he will or not. Also, I can’t see this actor (though is doing a fine job) without thinking back to when he and his mute partner worked for Cristobal in Alborada and wore those ridiculous wigs where the hair curled up on the bottom. It makes me laugh every time.

Back in her room, Lis whines to Fran about Ric getting married. Again. She comes up with some idea how to get Ric for herself and how Ric really loves her. Again.

Ric and crew get ready to leave, Mario has decided to join them. He leaves Pablo in charge of the house and the rest of them all leave.

A figure limps across the plaza in the middle of the night – it’s Santiago! He doesn’t appear to be running from the law, not sure if he could run anyway, so I guess he got sprung from the pen.

Ofelia has a headache or something, Ines is making an herbal treatment. So it’s late enough for Ric and crew to sneak out to LaFont’s house, it’s so late that Santiago is the only person out in the plaza, but Ofelia and Ines are still awake and fully dressed? I guess things are more convenient this way, when Santiago arrives he won’t have to go wake anybody up. Ines and Ofelia discuss what a raging bitch GRita is, Ofelia tries to be nice and says she hopes it’s just her pregnancy, Ines says no way, she’s a total bitch. Ofelia says she just wants Santiago to be free – and sure enough, there he is. He gets a lot of bunch of hugs and kisses, they ask if he escaped? No, he was set free, due in no small part to Ursula. Ofelia still thinks that the law might return for him, but Santiago explains that he was set free to soften the blow with the public about taking away Justo’s concessions. They tell him that Justo doesn’t know about that yet but everyone else does. Oh, also, Camila got married last night. Santiago hangs his head like he had a chance until that happened. Get over it dude. After discussing it with my wife, we agreed that he would likely have gotten over it long ago if his wife wasn’t such a huge pain in the ass, so of course everything she is so worried about is her own fault. To his credit, he tells Ofelia and Ines that her getting married was the right thing to do. I reduce my irritation from Santiago by one point.

Ric and crew storm LaFont’s house. Ric has a head wrap that looks like Steven Van Zandt from Bruce Springsteen’s band. They all cover their faces and Ric rings the bell, saying he has some urgent news for Alberto. The guy opens the door and they hold him down. Ric said no noise and no killing. The all split up and search the house. Ric takes FOREVER lighting a candle and looks around LaFont’s room. He finds some documents that look interesting, then he finds some coins. Mario also looks around what looks like an office. Ric also looks like the guys at the very beginning of the movie “Brotherhood of the Wolf”, when they have their coats up over their noses. Sorry for all the references, this is what goes through my mind when I watch TV. Brotherhood of the Wolf is a very interesting movie if you haven’t seen it. Anyway. Upstairs, Nana hears something and does a very Zombie-like walk to the door and into the hall. Mario sees her and grabs her, covering her mouth. Ric hears her yell anyway and rushes out there. He meets up with Mario, they throw Nana back into her room and close the door. Nana and Manuela stress, worry, and pray. Nana says they had faces like demons!

Outside, Ric asks what happened. Mario explains and says don’t worry, they won’t recognize us. Ric complains that he doesn’t want to hurt women, Mario says yeah I know you told me a thousand times. They bicker like old women then realize they are still standing outside and have taken off their disguises. Mario thinks Ric is being a wuss, does he think Jorge and Alberto worry like that? Ric says so what, we have to be like them?

Inside they look at what they found. Ric found some letters, Ric and Mario deduce that it is correspondence between LaFont and Foreman. So, Foreman is involved in the assaults on the caravans. They realize that LaFont has been selling the gold to Foreman. Ric produces coins he found at Alberto’s house, from Namibia and Italy. Mario says it’s proof! Ric says no, he could explain it away, but they know better. Moving on, Ric says maybe his loot is at Jorge’s house instead, but really he thinks it is already gone. Mario wants to kill the bad guys, Ric of course says no, he wants to prove what they did and expose them to the crown. He and Mario, who now seem to be best friends again as long as Ric doesn’t mention Camila, clink their wine glasses together and drink.

Jorge gives some cash to each of the two guys who helped with the last assault. They say it isn’t enough, surely Jorge and Alberto got more. Jorge basically says so what, I’m the boss whatever I want. The other guys don’t like it. Then Gonzalo pipes up from the back of the room, he is sloppy drunk. He complains that at least they got some money, he got nothing because he was off running an errand. Jorge tells Uriel, who looks like the fourth musketeer, that he is getting one of Jorge’s concessions and Gonzalo is getting the other one. Then the third guy complains what about me? Jorge says he gets whatever the others don’t want or don’t do a good job with. More complaining. Gonzalo wants cash to pay off his debt, Jorge says if he does well with the business they’ll work that out. More complaining. These losers will surely turn on each other and make it easier for Ric to find out what happened. Perhaps Gonzalo, being so disgruntled and also a drunk, will say something. Gonzalo then says something about Ric marrying Camila right under his nose, Jorge reproaches him. Gonzalo continues, the others chime in a bit, wanting to know why Jorge doesn’t do anything. Jorge says he’s waiting for LaFont to return, then he’ll decide what to do. Gonzalo slurs “so our opinion means nothing?” Someone tells him “shut up, you’re drunk, go home.” Gonzalo trips on something but finally makes his way out the door. After he leaves, Jorge tells the others that he is worried about Gonzalo, if he opens his fool drunk yap and says even one word about all this, they are all screwed (the word he used was ‘fried’). Ah so even more now I think Gonzalo will be the one to say something stupid.

Camila is getting dressed, worried about Ric since he didn’t come over last night. Jimena tells her to calm down, this is what it will be like being married to El Antillano. Camila worries some more.

GRita says she couldn’t believe it when Santiago showed up! Ines says her too. GRita says she can marry Vasco now, right? Ines says yes. Santiago comes out, GRita is actually nice to him and pulls his chair out for him. Ofelia offers chilaquiles (yum) or menudo (yuck), Santiago chooses menudo. GRita asks why he is so dressed up, he says he needs to go offer his thanks formally to Ursula. GRita immediately gets that look she always has and goes crazy. Now she thinks he’s after Ursula. He says the clothing an the thanks are appropriate, she says he went in just his work clothes the other day and that was to see Jorge! Etc etc. Santiago yells at her and storms off. Ofelia yells at GRita that she can’t tolerate this any more, Santiago hasn’t done anything wrong and she is suffocating him. I really like how everyone is starting to yell at GRita, she deserves it. Oh how I can’t wait for the letter from Camila to reappear from under the tree. That’s going to be awesome.

In the plaza, Ascanio reads the two pronouncements, one about Santiago being freed and the other about Justo losing the concessions. He sees Camila and Jimena there and tells them what they said. Then Santiago arrives, they all greet him warmly. THEN Ric arrives, giving Santiago a dirty look. Santiago congratulates Camila on the wedding not knowing Ric is there, Ric walks up and says “thank you.” Santiago leaves to go see Ursula. Ric says to Camila that it’s time to go see her father. Ascanio wants to know what to do, close the shop or what? Camila wants to talk to her father first. Ascanio offers to walk Jimena home.

Santiago thanks Ursula for her help, Ursula acts all nice. Santiago then thanks Sofia for her help, Sofia says she is glad for him to be free. She asks him to sit. Ursula sits next to him like a teenager in loooove. They discuss Jorge and the Justo thing again. Santiago laughs and says that his mother thought he was a ghost when he appeared last night!

Walking down a path, Camila makes excuses for being with Santiago, unnecessarily I think. Ric says he understands, but how would Camila feel if she saw Ric somewhere with Ursula? Her look says it all. Ric says see? But everything’s cool.

Manuela and Nana are worried about what happened, Manuela is worried that somehow LaFont will yell at her for this, somehow blaming it on her. I don’t put it past him. A card arries for LaFont, Manuela says that she has to take it to Jorge, she leaves.

Jimena and Ascanio discuss the ED card, Ascanio knows about it too. They are worried about it resurfacing. They wonder if Vasco lied and still has the card.

Jorge reads the card that Manuela brought. It’s from Foreman, saying that he is going to come to San Fernando to work out the rest of their business.

Ursula walks Santiago out of the house, he thanks her for the millionth time. His mother has offered to make her something, but she just wants him to visit her. He says he doesn’t want to encounter her father, so she asks to visit him. He says whenever you like. He leaves and she twirls around like a little girl. She’s all hot and horny for her brother! Gross!

Ric and Camila visit Justo, who says they need to tell Vasco they are married. Camila wants to have a wedding party together with him and Ines, Ric says fine. Justo wants to go see after his businesses, Camila tells him uh no, no, we have it taken care of. Justo says he’s much better, look how his hand doesn’t shake! He holds it out for them, he has only a small tremor.

Outside, Camila asks Ric if it was wrong not to tell him, Ric says he doesn’t know, it’s her decision. She thinks he’s mad, he says he’s thinking of something else. She says always something else but he hasn’t ever told her what that is. He says there hasn’t been time, she says find the time. Then she tells him how worried she was when he didn’t come to the house last night. They run into Marcelino, who is bringing the notice to Justo about losing his concessions. He tries to run on in, but they finally convince him to let Camila sign for it instead, since Justo doesn’t know yet. Ric asks if she wants to tell him later, she doesn’t know, she’s worried that he’ll take it hard. Ric says Justo is strong, does she want him (Ric) to tell him? He says it’s easier for people to hear bad news from strangers sometime, they are better able to control themselves. She agrees. Just then Ofelia and Santiago show up, Camila says Ric will tell Justo the news. Santiago says him, why? Ric says “because that’s what we decided.” Ric goes inside. Predictably, Santiago flips out, forgetting that it is Camila’s sister that is his wife, not Camila. Ofelia finally tells him to shut up, he’s making Camila nervous.

Ric goes inside and does a great psych job on Justo, telling him how everyone didn’t want to tell him the bad news but Ric knows better, he knows how strong Justo is and that he would be able to handle it. He explains how Jorge did it because Camila and Ric got married. Justo guesses before Ric has to tell him that Jorge took away his concessions. Ric then tells Justo how Jorge and Alberto are the ones stealing gold from the caravans, and that is why Ric came here, to bust them on it. He wants Justo’s help. He doesn’t say how but he gets Justo to swear that he won’t say anything to anyone.

Outside Camila is pacing madly, Santiago fumes, Ofelia tries to calm them down. Justo and Ric come out, Justo says of course the news is horrible, but they have to see what happens. So everything worked out fine, which doesn’t make Santiago happy. Now he has to admit that Ric was able to handle it.

Walking home, Ric tells Camila that he shared the info on the caravans with Justo, because his life is more important than keeping a secret.

Jorge is interrogating Manuela, she swears nothing was stolen, there were five guys, she didn’t see any of them, but Nana said they had faces like demons. Jorge wants her to stay at his house until Alberto comes home, she of course is worried that Alberto will freak out, Jorge says he’ll explain, she leaves to get ready.

Camila and Ric, who seem to have just been taking one long walk all day long (how I would love to have time like that, to just walk around with my wife all day in the sun doing whatever, that sounds awesome), run into Ascanio in the plaza and tell him that Justo knows the news now. Ascanio says what then, should we close up? Ric says sure, but take all the merchandise and put it at Justo’s house, that’s his own property. They can sell it there from the yard. But won’t Jorge get mad? Ric rightly says that Jorge will find things to get mad about no matter what, so what’s the difference. Ascanio says he’s going to go get the porno twins and get right on it. Camila says she saw Ric with Ascanio talking the other day, what about? Dang woman you are going to turn into GRita if you insist on interrogating your man, knock it off. Ric says he was telling him that he was going to get married with Camila. She asks if he trusts him so much that he told him before anyone else? Ric just says, “let’s go home.” Maybe his lies are starting to unravel.

Santiago is walking home with his mother, whining that Camila puts more trust in Ric than in him, and they have known each other for forever. Um, Santiago, this is because it is her HUSBAND. Him, not you. That point off the irritation scale that Santiago earned earlier? Right back on. He’s just as bad as his wife in the jealousy department sometimes. Ofelia tells him to knock it off, Camila found a good guy, get over it. He says Ric is NOT a good guy. Ofelia says he’s being jealous. Santiago says no, there’s something about him. They see Ascanio and ask what’s going on. He explains that Ric had the great idea to move the stuff to Justo’s house. Rather than agree and be sensible, Santiago explodes and wants to know who the hell Ric is to be giving this family orders all of a sudden. Ascanio is taken aback and says “well, he’s Camila’s husband!” Thank you Ascanio for the reality check, Santiago hasn’t seemed to understand that fact just yet. Santiago says “yeah well I’m Rita’s husband!” Ofelia tells him he’s getting irrational, Santiago storms off. Ascanio says what do I do? Ofelia says do what Ric told you. He goes and explains to the porno twins what the plan will be.

At Ofelia’s house, she is giving cures to various peasants. Ines comes to her and says she doesn’t really trust Ursula. Ofelia plays innocent and says that Ursula just did what God told her to do. Ines says the news is out on Ursula, she likes good looking men and Santiago is good looking, sooo… Ofelia says no way, Santiago wouldn’t do that. Ines says whatever, he’s still a man and his wife is a witch so who knows. Ofelia is freaking out of course, knowing that they are brother and sister. Ofelia grabs her wrap and runs off to talk to Sofia.

She gets there in a hurry. Sofia is told that Ofelia is waiting for her, she tells her granddaughter that she’ll see her later. Ofelia comes in and stammers around a bit about Ursula, finally Sofia just says yeah I know she’s a tramp, and sleeps with whoever, including Vasco, get on with your story. Sofia says “say it.. say that Santiago is Jorge’s son.” Ofelia gets angry, Sofia says she wants Ofelia to announce that Santiago is Jorge’s son and let him have his rightful position. Ofelia says never. Sofia says “well then, we will celebrate incest!” Ewwwwwww. Ofelia runs out and Sofia says “this will be your punishment Jorge.”

Monday – LaFont tells Don Gaspar that he thinks Ricardo Lopez de Carvajal is realy Ricardo Salamanca, pirate. Santiago sees his mother crying in church, talking to a priest, I wonder if she confessed and he overheard? Camila moves into Ric’s house, Lis doesn’t like it. We appear to be on the cusp of the next act in this show – Santiago as Jorge, jr.

Thanks for the excellent recap. But can you blame Santiago? Here has know Justo all his life, and is his first son-in-law, and Ric takes over his role in the family, (as well as with Camila). Give the guy a break. And Ric is not exactly friendly or nice to Santiago.

Do NOT give the guy a break - there are some who call Santiago "Saintly" - but really, he's just "Weakly" . . . Great Recap - your time and effort are MUCH appreciate.

Great recap, ferro. Have you ever seen so many insanely jealous ex or would-be lovers in one little town in one novela? San Fernando is Looney-lust Central! What a blast!

Now this thing with Ric and Santiago. Ric and Cami are a couple now, and there are times that Santi needs to just butt out cuz he made his bed and it's too bad he's got to sleep in it with GRita. On the other hand, recently at times I do feel that Santiago has been right to be a bit miffed. He's married to the older sister and does know the family much better and since he was knee-high to a salamander.

Ric, perhaps because of his priviledged station in life and the fact he is a natural leader, not to mention his understandable jealousy toward Cami's first fiance, seems to trample all over the poor guy. It's bad enough he nearly died and was left a cripple when trying so ineffectively to save Cami from Jorge's bullies and the shame of her being kidnapped in a royal right of rape, but then he jumped the gun and was talked into marrying GRita.

It's just that Ric has been grinding so much proverbial salt into Santiago's emotional wounds as he proceded to win Cami, become part of the family and then literally lord his way to command over it whenever there is a major problem to be solved. If Ric weren't so jealous he might have at least extended a hand of friendship and kept Santiago in the loop when things happened, or gotten his opinion on things. Instead he and Cami, because they are the wealthy and powerful people do as they wish and he's left to pound sand.

Ferro~~~Thanks for the recap. You are so right about Ric looking like Stevie. I loved the title..right on, right on, right on. Question : Has anyone ever known anyone in real life who carried the torch like this Santi does ?? Maybe some poor soul who years later at a class reunion is still crying in his beer about the chick who got away ??? Note to Santi : You are getting on everyone's last nerve. Ric is the Alpha male and ...yes...sorry... he's part of your family now...HE'S married to Camila. And Creepy McCreeperson [Lis] is really spinning out of control. I love the way she holds her doll under her arm and holds up that freaky cane to her face and points her crooked finger when making a point. [Well, let's face it...it's always the SAME point...''Ric really loves me ...he's just got the temporary hots for the ramera my father gave all his cash to.'' Basta. Speaking of reality checks...this girl needs one. Ric is remarkable patient for a pirate. no ??? P.S. Ferro``I decided to watch the short version of Amor Real today . I forgot to put on the English subtitles and I was so surprised and pleased at how much more I understood the dialogue compared to when I first watched months ago. I have picked up quite a lot of vocabulary over the last months thanks to these recaps. They have edited the heck out of it and dropped a lot of good stuff, but I still think it's worth the $20.00. The bathtub scenes alone are worth that.

P.S. Have you noticed that Fernando always adds some little affectations to his characters. In Alborada, it was ''SI, SI.'' In this one , it's ''no no no no nooooo'' and ''sssssssssss'' [when he wants to get someone's attention or doesn't like what someone is saying.] In Amor Real, he rubbed his cheek with the back of his hand. [Remember how they had Manuelito do the same thing...proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was indeed the fruit of Manuel's loins... not that pesky Adolfosolis's...[ Manuel always said that name as if it was one word.]

Thanks for the recap. You sure are hard on Santiago. I understand that Rick is very handsome and those powerful muscles are a real turn on for both men and women. Even though his jealousy and temper tantrums are sooo cute, I wouldn't expect a full blooded man to sit happily by while Don Juan married 2 days walks in and takes over as man of the house. I agree with your assessment. Most of these people suck and act like little old women. (By the way, what does that mean)?

Well on one hand I can understand Santi being miffed about how things turned out for him. But on the other he tends to forget that Camila doesn't belong to him. He married her sister and she moved on. What else was she supposed to do and she found someone who can take care of her and protect her from Jorge when Santi couldn't. Santi needs to let Camila go and stop holding on to something that has been over for some time. OTOH I don't know who's worse. Rita with her nagging, Lis with her obsession for Ric, or Santi with his jealousy.

Ferro, thanks for the recap. Jardinera thank you for your input and opinion about Santiago. I feel exactly as you do but I could not have expressed it so elegantly. It makes a lot of sense and you said it so well. Susan Lynn, yes, I have seen people both men and women handle jealousy in even worse and abusive ways. I have also seen people (mostly adolescents) so crazy in love with a persons physical attributes until the person seems faultless. When they treat other people badly we think the other person deserved it. The pedastal that we've put Rick on is a good example.

I've watched Pasion since day 1 when I was channel surfing & just happened to come across it. I've seen some telenovias off and on but this is the first time I've actually watched every episode & I'm really enjoying it. Between finding this website, using closed captions (which are in spanish on my tv) & purchasing a spanish-english dictionary, I'm able to really understand what is going on rather than guessing. And a bonus: I'm re-learning spanish!

Jimena, Mario & Ric are my fav charaters so far and Sofia was added to my list this week when she confronted Jorge after Ric & Camilla's wedding.

Telenovelas always have these convoluted relationships swirling around the main couple with everyone wanting someone they can't have and having someone they don't want >>> Here we have Ric and Camila and swirling around them , we have Santi and Jorge pursuing Camila while Grita tries to hang on to Santi while Lis desires Ric .

Ferro, you had me rolling on the floor laughing right out of the gate with that title! Thanks for the superb recap—you were on a roll, huh?

“Pablo says he will keep his mouth shut. I’m not sure if he will or not.” Poor Pablo is going to be conflicted big time about this.

With his young buddies, Jorge looks like he’s doing a divide and conquer routine. Wonder if it’ll work or one of them will get p. o.’d and just try to kill ol’ Jorge? Maybe the sloppy drunk. He’ll be the one to get quickly discarded, too, if he messes with The Man, ‘cause he won’t be able to hold a sword, let alone steady and aim it right.

I had a sudden thought last night. Probably the first original one in a long while. Ascanio told Jorge he was educated by the religious guys somewhere, but it was clear he didn’t have a high position or anything. What if he’s Ric’s illegitimate brother or cousin or something? They would have sent him off to be raised right but not claimed him, and he might have some feelings for Ric that Ric doesn’t even know about. Just a thought, folks.

Jeanne

Mad Bess/Susanlynn--"[Lis] is really spinning out of control. I love the way she holds her doll under her arm and holds up that freaky cane to her face and points her crooked finger when making a point. [Well, let's face it...it's always the SAME point...''Ric really loves me ...he's just got the temporary hots for the ramera my father gave all his cash to.''" ROTFLLL!! Well-said!

Jeanne

Ferro: Great details. This recap really sets the stage for tomorrow's episode. Y'all have said it all.

From lower Ala

Thanks mucho, Ferro. I love it that you are a cut through the crap kind of straight up guy doing recaps with a good deal of dry humor to help keep us pointed at true north. Santiago does really need to get a grip that he is not going to keep both sisters at his beck and call and YES, he did choose however foolishly.

I like that Ricardo does show some human frailty in his guarded jealousy of Santi. Not that I am suggesting another whiner in the family. We have more than a full measure of whines and tears. I can't really picture Ricardo ever getting that debilitated however. In spite of ruffling his brother-in-law's ego, Ric was right about approaching Justo with a manly role Justo could adopt rather than freaking out about the loss of the concessions of his mill and store. I think Ric will do much more to help him get these back than Santi could have. Santi is sexy and sensual but not the super bright type to think outside the donkey cart.

I really want to cut Santiago a break, I know I'm hard on him, I was so happy when he said Camila did the right thing by marrying Ric. I thought he had turned a corner. But then he throws not one but TWO hissy fits in the same episode and was out of line with both of them. You can make an argument that he's married to the older sister and should be the 'man' of the family, but he was complaining that CAMILA didn't come to him. Of course she would go to her own husband first. Now if Ofelia, Ines, Vasco, anyone else ran to Ric instead of him maybe he'd have a point. But to ask a woman to go to him with a family problem over her own husband? No way. For that reason, Santiago = crybaby.

Santiago is probably more angry with himself than with anyone else. Maybe that's why he's a crazy-jealous nut.

When you're legitimately angry with someone, you can deal with that person and maybe then get past your anger. But what are you supposed to do when you're mad at yourself for something which, in retrospect, was a big stupid life-ruining mistake? He can't get over it when he's got this nagging harpy on one side and his ex-girlfriend (now married to apparently the hottest man in all of New Spain) on the other side.

I can't tell whether GRita is angry with herself or not. It's more as though she's afraid that because she got Santi through trickery, God or Fate will take him away from her. But instead of confronting the guilt, she just gets more and more bitter.

At this point, with the bitterness being so harsh, you'd think it'd actually be EASIER to confess. But she'd rather be bitter and miserable with Santi than be embarrassed and alone.

Dear Grita : My mother used to say , ''You can catch more flies with sugar than you can with vinegar.'' Grita, haven't you noticed that the harping is not helping, Chica??? Well, maybe like in Crime and Punishment , Grita has created her own pwesonal hell and is trapped there. Santiago is one of those people who just can't let go of the past , so he keeps spinning his wheels saying , ''If only I hadn't...'' Yes, he had his share of bad breaks, but so have other people. Camila is lost to you...move on. If you really love her, you should be happy that she has found happiness.

They should have named this novela "Obsesión" instead of "Pasión". Tim was obsessed with getting revenge against Ric's father (maniacally stabbing his portrait over and over, and stealing Ric's fortune and making him a fugitive); Jorge is obsessed with sleeping with Camila; Santiago once loved Camila, but now he's just obsessed with her and cannot move on; GRita's obsession with Santiago is making everyone's life miserable and Lis's obsession for Ric has made her delusional. Have I forgotten anyone?

I look forward to your hilarious recaps, Ferro, as always and it's good to see you in this lively forum.

Ferro, you bring up a good point:
"he was complaining that CAMILA didn't come to him. Of course she would go to her own husband first". Santiago is aggravating to watch grumbling like this --and remarking on it is half the fun for us here.

Playing the devils advocate here, I'm wondering if this isn't a foreshadowing of nastier things to come. Others more in tune with the mores of that society in that time and place than I am can fill me in on the historical and social nuances. Dunno, but maybe someone out there could tell us what place and what kind of seniority Santiago would have had in the overall male family structure compared to Ric who, though Cami's husband and certainly one she should confide in first, according to some social more back then together with Ric under some social structure was supposed to have come to Santiago next. We all know, of course, with El Antillano ain't no way, no how. It would explain Santi's "outbursts". As it is, as Sad Sack Santi gets even angrier and feels even more helples and that his "respect-ometer" is at an all time low, he is slowly seeing himself as just one big lifelong screw-up.

Anyone else see shades of Pedro and Timoteo here, except it's between brothers-in-law rather than brothers?

Usually the recaps generate comments that are interesting, fun and educational. On the contrary, a lot of these comments are centered around rehashing Santiago's jealousy, & decifering Rita's moods as if they are the highlights of the show. (Thank heavens Inez didn't cry that would have generated another dozen describing how ugly she looks when she cries). In my opinion it's difficult to stereotype or put time limits on how people handle or react to emotion. I grew up in a household with a father who much like you guys, was very intolerant of any show of emotion. My parents never knew the many times I cried myself to sleep after maintaining a stoic face in front of them. I have a sister who is clinically depressed and her moods always irritated my parents. Even though I'm in my 40-s I still hide my emotions from them. They think it's great describe me as strong. They say I don't let little things bother me. This novela has so much to offer. I hope we're not going to get stuck on debating and rehashing the rights and wrongs of what some of us see as normal human emotions.

How ironic is it that our religioso Saintly is behaving so unsaintly by his own choosing? Even now, he could choose to behave better and move on for her sake, if not his own.

Cami finally got a taste of her own jealousy medicine, when Ric asked how she would feel if Ursula was always around. She could've toned down her affection for Santi, especially in front of Ric. (All those crys, hugs, running to find out what's going on w/Santi, etc.) Ric was right in pointing out that it works both ways and she should show a little consideration for his feelings with her being so obviously involved in her ex's life...

p.s. I find the range of topics we cover really interesting, especially the areas of human emotion. How we translate (and give opinions of) the language and the characters are part of what makes it interesting to me. We have so many talented folks, with lots of ideas to offer. I don't see them as necessarily being a reflection of our personal lives...

Anon 08:41 about Santiago's jealousy you said: "... I'm wondering if this isn't a foreshadowing of nastier things to come". That's an excellent suggestion for further debate. Almost always when a lot of emphasis is put on something like Santiago's temper, it's setting the mood for something more dramatic. But if we see it only as something some misguided writer put in there to irritate us, we just might be overlooking a deeper meaning.

For me, gRita's jealousy IS one of the many highlights of the show. I find it fascinating because I have seen people similarly poisonous and bitter and have always wondered what motivates it. Obviously there's fear and insecurity, but maybe there's also a bizarrely self-righteous sense of guilt. Like "I sold my soul to get this man, how dare he not be perfect like I thought he was."

Anon 9:13, I'm sorry if our disussion has reminded you of something unpleasant in your own experiences, that of course isn't our intention.

I do want to make the distinction though, as this has come up before, that we are talking about characters on a TV show, not real people. Real people have shades of gray, on TV they usually don't and that's how we view them. If these were real people we might think of all the other factors for anything they do, but since it's TV, there are no other factors, only what we've seen. So, people aren't criticized for showing emotion, only for going overboard. And I'm sorry if it offends you, but Ines really is a horribly ugly crier. :)

Ferro - great entertaining recap as always. And I think Jestena had a great thought - Obsession would be a perfect name for this one!

Great recap, as usual, Ferro!! I also agree with Jestina about "obsession" being the better title! Lots of coraje in this novela!!!

What will happen when Saintly finds out he is the son of Whore-hey? That whould be interesting.

Susanlynn, you are so right about how Fernando adds affectations to his characters. In this novela, I notice how he has that really nice smile....almost as nice as Eduardo's !!! But you also know that underneath, he can also change and kill at will if someone threatens him enough. Scary!

Ferro, I'm Anon 09:13 and I appreciate your followup comment. I admit that I did get carried away because of my own hurtful childhood experience. But as someone (JB) said earlier, these comments are not meant to be a reflection of our personal lives. Seeing them from a personal point of view is what can make them either acceptable or offensive. I maintain my opinion that I absolutely love Santiago's character. So, some of the negativity seemed excessive & hit home. But it's a thought worth considering that on this blog there's no need to justify an opinion with a personal experience. Thanks for the reality check.

You're welcome Anon 9:13, and speaking of personal experiences, good think we aren't all together drinking right now or this would soon turn into a drunken, tearful room of people saying "I love you man!"

This place is all about fun, Mexico, Spanish, and mocking. What a wonderful excuse to leave any baggage at whatever the last site was you visited. It will be there later when you look for it, so enjoy your freedom while you are here!

Can someone please add this recap to the sidebar? Thank you so much.

In defense of Cami and Ricardo decision making status, Vasco is a dud and gRita is absorbed with herself, so which adult child can make decisions?
On the issue of why Ricardo and not Santiago: Ricardo has pledged his life to making her happy. That includes dealing with whatever she wants him to do. Santiago still seems stuck in 'it would make ME happy to still feel I have some part of you, like your need for me'.
IMO Ricardo has been curteous to Santiago and even after the sqirmish in the park Ricardo did not appear to hold a grudge against Santiago. On the other hand Santiago is STILL asking people how they feel about Ricardo and rejecting all answers because what he really wants is someone else to join forces with him against Ricardo. I remember way back when he told Camilla that his mother also agree with him (Santi) that Ricardo is not a good choice for her. Of course it wasn't true but he wanted it to be the truth.
And that conversation between Ricardo and Camilla I thought Ricardo had been asking talking about Cami hugging Santiago and he (Ricardo) was saying that he doesn't want to feel jealous.

Are you certain Santiago said it was good that Camilla and Ricardo had married? When his mother told him I thought his response was 'that's done'.

Julie, I agree with every point you made about Santiago and Rita dealing with their self anger.
Maybe thats why Santiago is openly hostile to Ricardo...he wants a reason to punch him out.

I understood his response to mean 'well done.' If that's not right, please somebody correct me. Like he was grudgingly admitting that it was for the best, what with Jorge making trouble and all. I don't remember what he said in Spanish, at least what form of hacer. Bien hizo or bien hice

Ferro, Santiago definitely said, that's good. He did it grudgingly, but pragmatically. "Está bien."

Captain Bonney, I like your take on Santi trying to get someone to agree with him about Ric being bad news. He's getting frustrated because it's not getting any legs at all with others, and he's almost irrational about it when he doesn't receive that response.

Ferro, I think you are the greatest. Maybe is because you are a man and you see things under a different light. I really enjoy all the recaps but, yours are particularly funny. I really loved “A figure limps across the plaza in the middle of the night – it’s Santiago! He doesn’t appear to be running from the law, not sure if he could run anyway, so I guess he got sprung from the pen.” I though it was hilarious.
I agree with most of you about Santiago. He is a cry baby. The issue about who would tell Justo, I thought it was the logical thing to do. When Marcelino came with the notification Camila and Ric were there not Santiago. They decided right there that it was better to tell Justo right away. Also, have any of you notice that Santiago always says “because I am his son in law.” What about Ric? What is he?
Ofelia id getting annoying with her “Santiago doesn’t need Whorehey’s money.” Doesn’t she thing that maybe if whorehey knows he would cut them some slack?
Anywho as some of you said this is telenovela world

Thanks Sue, I'm glad you enjoy my recaps. People being nice like you is why I keep doing them, even when I have a busy weekend and it's 9:00 Sunday night and I'm not done yet.

I think you are right Ferro, I think he said "hizo bien" which would be (she) did well

Many characters in this story, including Santi, have asked Ascanio what sort of man Ric is. (I think Santi may have asked TWICE.) Ascanio has told Santi, Justo, Vasco, maybe LaFont, and possibly some other people that Ric is "just a regular guy like anyone else."

The answer cracks me up, considering that a "regular guy" doesn't usually hang around with a bunch of heavily armed, shifty-looking men, a couple of unmarried women, a super-hot sidekick with a beard braid, a letter of recommendation from a cardinal, significant funds (not even counting the stuff that got stolen), and a built-in babe magnet.

So you can't blame Santi for doubting Ascanio's word, but what would happen even if he did find the dirt he's been digging around for, and broke up Camila's marriage? He wasn't willing to leave gRita before she got pregnant, so he REALLY can't justify dumping her now.

Ferro, you and Julie crack me up {-()
"... Ric just says, “let’s go home.” "
And from Julie:"... The answer cracks me up, considering that a "regular guy" doesn't usually hang around with a bunch of heavily armed, shifty-looking men, a couple of unmarried women, a super-hot sidekick with a beard braid, a letter of recommendation from a cardinal, significant funds (not even counting the stuff that got stolen), and a built-in babe magnet."

I have found it funny that Santiago keeps fishing for allies against Ric, always trying to sound so reasonable, "so uh what's he like?" and as soon as the answer is "eh normal" he flies into a rage. It reminds me of people I have worked with who innocently ask what you think of a particular co-worker, wanting to know up front if they can start complaining or not.

Maricruz, you're right, of course! I remember now hearing the word "hizo" and thinking that I hadn't heard that word since I finished high school Spanish. Long ago. ;-) I was surprised that Santiago just shrugged and acknowledged Cami's good move rather than going ballistic.

Thank you, whoever posted the recap to the sidebar.

The suggesiton to rename the show Obsesion, ITA!

Julie, you said, "his (Santiago's) ex-girlfriend (now married to apparently the hottest man in all of New Spain)..." Only New Spain? Julie, my dear, that approaches d*mning by faint praise!

Finally, regarding Ofelia trying to keep her son from becoming Jorge's acknowledged heir. I came across a VERY appropriate verse, Proverbs 16:19 "Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the plunder with the proud." That is PRECISELY what Ofelia is worried about.

Julie, I enjoy and agree with your point of view! Your comments are full of common sense, pragmatic, true and so funny!

I think Santi needs a major attitude adjustment before he takes the thrown, or whatever it is that Jorge has that he'll inherit. Otherwise, in many ways, it'll be like father, like son...

Mad Polly said: "...a VERY appropriate verse, Proverbs 16:19 "Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the plunder with the proud." That is PRECISELY what Ofelia is worried about.

Uh-oh...My Main Man Mario seems to want to divide the plunder with the humble and lowly spirited!

It's all very simple: Saintly is mad because he betrayed Cami & married Grita, Grita is made because she betrayed Cami & married her fiance, Ofelia is mad because her beloved son is the spawn of the devil, Whorehey is mad because he's a powerless buffoon & the mask is slipping, Cami is mad because she knows Ric is hiding something, Ric is mad because he's hiding something, & finally, Jimena & Mario are mad because they haven't done the horizontal boogie yet.

Thanks, Ferro! Always a Monday pleasure to rehash Friday night.

;-)

Remember: life is tough so let's have fun with the alternate universe we know as Pasion!

It occurred to me - since Jorge's hitting on anyone who can't get away from him, some professionals as well as innocent village maidens, howcome he hasn't turned up with one of those nasty diseases? can we expect a sudden decline and disgraceful death?

And if Ursula manages to nail Santiago before they know they're brother and sister, there will be a lot of repenting to do!

Dear Ferro,
I adore your Friday re-caps; all the more so because you don't post them right away. The wait is so worth it.
Now a complicated question and I apologise in advance if this has been already explained. So, Ricardo has two cofres of loot, which were stolen from him. Were they obtained while in service to Foreman? In which case, Foreman would be after his butt. Or was his little jaunt to Africa an independent enterprise? Some of the loot, no doubt stolen from Spanish vessels, would make Ric a criminal in the eyes of the Spanish crown. What is his rationale, if he gets the treasure back from Mancera et al? To blow the whistle on Jorge and clear his good name? This would leave him penniless. I'm confused.

That money was all his, I think the finishing touches were from his trip to the African coast. There wasn't ever any talk of him cheating Foreman, this was all loot from his pirating.
I think he wants to turn in Jorge and Alberto specifically for the caravan robbing, which would (along with Bermejo confessing to the killing) get him off the hook for the murder that he was accused of long ago. Perhaps he is expecting to be pardoned for his piracy as well, if he is even in trouble for that, I think he wasn't stealing from Spanish ships then, only enemies of Spain. It's all so confusing.

I just saw the request for tagging, and I just did it.

Anyway, just another post to say I love this show and don't find much to mock in it. The characters are complex and interesting. Their foibles are more like those of real people than those I've seen in other novelas.

Thanks for the recap, Chris.

I think that Santiago deserves an oscar for how well he is portraying a man with unrelenting heartbreak. Ric's role is so predictible. He gets everything he wants and whenever he has a challenge, we know he's going to reign victorious. I wonder how Santiago's role is going to play out in the end? I mean I can't imagine this novela having 2 hero's. If Santiago inherits Jorge's role, he'd supposedly outrank Ric. Something tells me Rick is somehow going to end up with Jorges money and title leaving Santi with nada.

Don Gaspar did tell Ric when he gave him the letter of reference that if he could find out who was stealing the silver from the caravans that this would go a long way to getting the Spanish Crown to pardon him for his piracy and that is the advantage he told Mario they should look for when they turn over Jorge and LaFont to their justice system instead of killing them outright as Mario had wanted to do.

Ferro~~~You said it all : ''This place is all about fun, Mexico, Spanish, and mocking.'' That's why I stop by every day. [ Not necessarily in that order...often ''mocking''s at the tippy top of the list.] CarayCaray offers a pleasant respite from really real life surrounded by really real people who are sometimes not all about the fun and the mocking....let alone the Spanish and Mexico.

I also interpreted Santiago's saying "She did well" as meaning Camila's marriage would get her out of the clutches of the one person he loathes more than Ric, the lecherous Jorge. It just heightens the delicious suspense of waiting for the moment Santiago realizes he's the spawn and heir of this odious person.

And yes, Sabastian is doing an excellent job in this role -- and it's a meaty role. How will Santiago reconcile knowing that all he has suffered is because of his own father? And that his mother hid this from him? How will Jorge regard him?

Despite their rivalry over Camila, Ric and Santiago share two things in common already: They both despise Vasco for what he did with the ED letter, and they both would do anything to protect Camila from Jorge.

Why can't they all just get along?

Thanks Ferro for your great recap. I want to encourage you to keep writing these as your humor (as is the other recappers) is such fun.

Julie, I also agree with your assessment of Grita (she's angry b/c of her manipulation) and she's passed the point of being able to confession. But its going to be really ugly when that letter gets discovered. I can see "Saintly" being mad enough (after all the badgering she's put him through) to kick her to the curb even with his kid.

Ferro & Jardinera, thanks for your clarification about Ric's treasure. I so wanted it to be all his; he has enough problems as it is. And Julie, I agree about gRita. I think the guilt about the letter is actually making her insane. I sort of perversely enjoy the scenes she is in. And whoever said Sebastian was doing a good job in his role, Yes! While he is not my favorite actor, I cannot disagree.

Ah, Pasion (Obsesion) Re-hash, my favorite item on Monday's menu. It's such fun to savor the recap and all the comments. It'll be very interesting to see how Santiago makes up for his suffering and deprivation once he's put in a position of some power and privilege, assuming that's around the bend.

And can we count on Camilla's hair remaining in the more natural and more flattering style? Will Justo get busted again if he sets up a flea market in his yard?

There was one rather strange parallel in this episode. When Sofia sent her granddaughter away so she and Ofelia could talk, she still had the child's doll in her arms. She continued to hold it much the same way Lisabeta does with her doll. Is that significant, and if so, why?
La Paloma

I always thought Sebastian Rulli {Santiago) was the Fabio of Mexican telenovelas what with all that blond flowing hair and muscles. I had never watched him act because he reminded too much of Fab. I think Rulli is doing a great job as Santi otherwise we wouldn't be devoting so much time and print on him/his character. Yes, he probably will have more character turns for the worse and then a redemption, I hope, because he is a good boy at heart. Just speculating.

A few days ago someone mentioned the two stars always are together in the end and that they were surprised that ric and camile married so early in the novela. I thought that It was supposed to be Camille and Santiago and that in the end they do get back together and finish the wedding they started. Just like in Amar sin limites.
Ret

the letter Rita had was ripped up after she read it, wasn't it. The letter that was burnt part way was the letter fromt the doctor who claims camilles marriage was not consumated??? I've been waiting for a mailman to happen by and casually mention to santiago about the letter he gave his wife from Camille and then he realizes what happened.

Finally got to watch this epi. Excellent recap, Chris, one of your funniest! And you got a good one too with an actual pirate raid!

There is one bit of dialogue I couldn't get. It occurs here:

Ric and crew get ready to leave, Mario has decided to join them. He leaves Pablo in charge of the house and the rest of them all leave.

Right before they hit LaFont's place. Mario explains how he has been over to LaFont's so he knows the place and ...something else I didn't get...then Ric says NO! I thought he was telling Mario he couldn't go, but the next minute, all of them are leaving except for Pablo, who is left behind.

Margaret, I think what was going on was prior to this scene Ric and Mario had their little tiff (as recapped on the Thursday night episode). Mario wanted a full-scale massacre and Ric wanted to be more of a cat burglar. They had their chest thumping and brooding but when it came time for the fun Mario wanted to join so he jumped in with the good idea to go on foot so as not to be noisy; offering the olive branch so to speak. That's when Ric said "Eh? You still want to go with us?" and Mario said "Well yeah, unless I split, but anyway I know the palace yada yada." Ric's emphatic "No!" was in response to Mario's suggestion that he take off and not join them. So Mario wanted to go, Ric wanted him to go, and the boys made up. Anyway, that's what I got out of it.

Ferro, most excellent recap of a great episode. I love it when you don't hold back. Which you hardly ever do.

Sorry Ret, but Ric and Camila are the two main stars of the show. I would be very surprised to see FC not get the girl.
