Yo Amo a Juan- Mon.02/11 The Little Green Bus Pushes on to Achichipico

The little green bus lumbers across the screen with Juan and Nidia still on board. Ana and Paula sit in an outdoor dining area in Achichipico ordering tila tea and a coffee. Paula is holding forth about how she needs to come to some conclusions with her life and feels she is turning 180 degrees and wants to regret nothing in the past. One feels her whining has continued since last Friday when Jeanne couldn't stand it any more and if you think I am excited by this dialog, look at the expression on Ana's face and you will know mine too. She looks as though she has been through the wringer with this inconstant, fuzzy thinking daughter who now after all these months can't seem to abide the life she insisted on claiming as Cesar Luis' wifey. She's not going to look back, come what may. Whatever that means to a twit brain...

In quick succession we see Juan praying that he will arrive in time to find Paula and then Cesar Luis is taking tea like a petulant child from Monica as she pours. He is threatening to go directly to Achichipico to confront Paula while Monica is advising him that he should not rush out in the heat of the moment to pursue his wife, looking insecure, after all his marriage and more important his dignity are at stake. CL gnashes his teeth that he can't stand by with his arms crossed while this cretin steals his wife. Monica with that sublime secret smile continues to urge him to have patience. CL with his familiar stare at yet another enigma of life, opines that he has many things to verify or realize (comprobar) about whether Paula is coming back into his life. While the jailhouse rock scene with Alirio and Gutie the center of attention comes to a quick change up when a guard approaches Alirio to inform him that a judge has given him his liberty. Gutie jumps up and down a bit insisting that he has to be let go too since they are doing time for the same crime, but it is not to be.

Gaytan comes into CL's office, Monica is already there so Gaytan launches into a flourish of compliments about his time at Farrell, how it was so like a family to him but his attempt to be sincere and grateful are drowned out by Cesar Luis' snickers and snorts interspersed with Gaytan's bland assurance that he would always be their friend while CL spits out his venomous insults about Gaytan's stupid negligence. He won't change his opinion that he was most of all a vile traitor and Gaytan should get out NOW and cut the melodrama. Monica looks almost as teary-eyed as Gaytan but says nothing against CL's harsh rejection.

Alirio in ecstatic joy sweeps into the house (It's always been Nidia's not really his, don't you think) but all the same he caresses the table, the flowers and exclaims home sweet home he is newly arrived so loudly that Yadira hushes him hissing not to wake the baby with his babbling. In his usual oblivion, he proclaims that justice limped but finally arrived, he is a clean and happy man. Yadira scolds that he has lost a screw (le zafo un tornillo). He begins to notice that they are in the house alone, Yadira without an ounce of irony in her maintains that this is the hour most people work and do something useful!! He spouts something about the red nightingale (ruiseñor) perhaps referring to his red headed wife but Yadira finally says she isn't here. She has gone on a journey.

Gaytan slinks out past Ivonne's desk but is met by the lounge lizards who form a battering ram of morbid curiosity. Gaytan bravely launches into a tearful, amigos and amigas I am leaving now, it is the hour to depart but I don't want to leave. he admits that he has been out of control, has at times been the unjust and arbitrary arbiter, but doesn't just want to be remembered as the old grump (gruñon). As he sobs about them always being in his heart, Ivonne steps forward and gives him a big hug and the lizards enfold him with more hugs and tears, the only emotions we've ever seen from some of these reptiles.

Yadira and Alirio continue giving and receiving the astounding news that Nidia is not in the house to receive the redeemed man. He continues to accuse Yadira of joking with him, how could Nidia go off when he was about to be freed, how did she not know that he would be released for innocence. He assumes they are raising his spirits with jokes (subirme el animo con chistes). She finally breaks through the rhetoric to lay the wet blanket on him that Nidia has gone off with Juan to the village where he was born. Do you want me to repeat it in German? Without missing a beat the Alirio avalanche of wordiness turns to condemnation of Juan (Tlacoyo de frijol and filthy chapirite) who has stolen his wife. It's the limit of ignominious abuse he reaches a crescendo of classic Alirio pomposity.

Angarita smiles his most charming smile into the camera as Gaytan slumps into the market with his sad little box and sadder little face. Anga tells him a few more minutes and he would not have found him in the store he was just waiting for a load of beets to arrive. He suddenly notices that Gaytan is sobbing, and wants to know what's happened.

Marely, Yadira and Kike are sitting at the round kitchen table discussing Alirio's continued outburst or what Yadira called his three hour scandalous tirade of begging and protesting.

Anga grabs the tequila bottle assuring Gaytan this is the only cure for depression, as Gaytan gulps, sniffs, and finally agrees to bottoms up. Anga offers him brotherly support and help not just for tonight but forever. We have to support each other. Anga is the warmest, most emotionally centered character we've met for months on this show.

Sweet Marely enters the bedroom with a tray of food where Alirio is barricaded himself among the pillows on the bed. He bursts out with Nidia doesn't care a cucumber for his well being and has gone off with big nose (narizotas), etc. Marely tries to assure him with the big secret that Nidia went off with Juan so he could meet Paula Davila in his home town.

Anga is still consoling Gaytan that he has a place with him. He will put effort into the business (meter al hombro), through tears Gaytan affirms that he can't be dock loader (cargador) again. Anga promises him to take him home, feed him chicken soup and he can sleep. Gaytan doesn't know what he would have done without Angarita.

More ranting by Alirio that Nidia should have known he was innocent and would be coming home, but does Marely realize what it is like to be criticized all the time by, you'll never have to live with this.

Monica and Cesar Luis come into Monica's while the cousin makes an immediate excuse that she is going to stay overnight with a girlfriend. Monica offers to make dinner but CL resists, she makes him a drink which he can't seem to get down, he just wants her to sit with him while she has no trouble swigging down the drink.

Marely, Kike and Yadira compare notes on the crazy day at home or the office where Gaytan was fired and they discuss Juan's actions some more.
Angarita and Gaytan enter Anga's house which is modest and not a bit chic. Gaytan rallies enough to pronounce that Anga has an eclectic style, Anga asks what that is in Spanish, Gaytan tries unique. Still the gracious one, Angarita tells Gaytan this house is his home, he'll have his own bedroom to put his things.
Kike and Yadira continue talking about supporting Juan, Kike knows that only Marely truly loves Juan not that Licenciada (Paula). I had to love the orange and pink bedroom decorations with Yadira's headband matching the baby's sleeping suit.

Gaytan definitely gets a second wind and immediately begins to plan to refurbish and rearrange Angarita's things. A situation develops immediately when it dawns on Anga that Gaytan has plans to throw out lots and rearrange everything else. Anga points out that he doesn't criticize the way that others eat, dress or what they do in bed... which makes Gaytan back off not wanting to annoy Anga.

Back to CL and Monica where the lights have lowered and the music is sensuous but Monica admonishes CL until he whines that she is treating him like she's his mother and she retorts that he is acting like a little child. He suggests staying the night as we fade to break with the smile of triumph on her lips.

Paula is calling CL's (I can't figure out what is home for her) house but no answer. She is annoyed that he is out but promised to take care of himself and go right home after work. Ana suggests he has gone out to eat. Meanwhile back at Monica's she is telling CL there is no reason for him to stay overnight, she was merely trying to help him through a difficult time. He whines about his marriage not working well, she counters with he should not deceive himself, they have no possibilities of developing anything together again. He leaves in a bit of a snit but says it helped him to talk to her. The next morning, Cousin is teasing Monica about what might have developed last night. Monica assures her nothing and she is still a pure and chaste divorcee. You didn't even touch a hair on each other? No. Men don't appreciate us when they should. In fact she is going to become CL's ideal woman. He'll regret leaving me for Paula. Would you return to CL, No I want complete revenge. I wouldn't take him back if he were the last man on earth. But she vows to step aside just as CL turns toward her after he leaves Paula, kind of like a toreador.

This is countered with Paula reaching CL by phone the next morning telling him that her mother really needs to stay a few more days. CL confounds her utterly by being too too pleasant and understanding, he can survive a few days without her and sending kisses to her and Mommy... and begs off so he can get to the office right away for a meeting. Paula says, how strange he is acting. He is so complacent, maybe he is changing. (yeah honey, snakes do get new skins every so often). Paula wants to go out and meet the people in this little town of Juan's.

Finally back to that little green bus. Juan sleeps in the seat alone while the camera pans up to the driver with Nidia somehow wedged on his left side by the window. The driver is telling her she is crazy and it is dangerous to be distracting him, she needs to return to her seat. He declares himself a married man who is not used to flirtatious (resbaloso) women like her. Juan walks to the front of the bus just in time to reprimand the man for talking to a lady like this, Well wouldn't you know that Juan is ready to fight but quickly Juan and Nidia are out on the country road as the bus steams off. Nidia takes out an enormous bottle of tequila and comforts herself with big swigs.

Paula and Ana are the object of all attention in the town, Ana is buying sweets from a street vendor, Molo sighs about her being a monument to ... and quickly covers saying ugliness (fealdad). Paula complains that everyone is staring at them and seems to know their business. But could it be Paula, that they are staring at your painted on tight jeans and t-shirt cut to reveal most of your breasts?

Nidia swigs more tequila then adjust her own very tight revealing clothes, as Juan waves at another truck that won't stop for him. She tells him to hide in the bushes (matorrales) until she lands a ride then he can rush up. This works quite well but the flirty truck driver insists that only two can be in the cab and Juan will have to ride "in the back of the airplane".

Kike trying hard to do figures at the market warmly greets Gaytan when he shows up with Anga. He says now they will have a complete team with such a fine person as Gaytan.

Back to Nidia with the trucker in the cab, he's bragging about his business acumen, she's out bragging him with her artist's persona as she has been to New York, Paris and Rio and he calls her Brillita like sparkly one but I think she had Brigette Bardot in mind. Juan thinks big thoughts up on the top of the truck bed. It'll be Christmas before they get to Achichipico at this rate, he sure hopes Paula is still there when he arrives.

Ana and Paula at another restaurant are presented with an anthurium plant on their table and marvel at its beauty and further think it is a strange coincidence that this is also the pueblo where the Japanese flower business was supposed to work with Paula to develop Farrell's interests in the anthurium market. (Does this mean she doesn't know about Juan's involvement?)

Alirio' fingers are drumming on Ivonne's desk as he mutters about orchestrated crimes, traps and calumny/slander. He proclaims he won the big prize for virtue, his freedom! Ivonne dryly asks if he wants her to applaud. No, he does want her to announce him into CL's office. Once inside he starts his rant with CL about his job being stolen from him. When CL counters with his errors and stupidity, Alirio is quick to blame it all on Gutierrez and begs for clemency, tells CL he betrayed his soul mate (alma gemela) and rants about arriving home to find his house vacant, himself alone and betrayed by that two footed rat, that dog heap (monteperros) Juan Domingo, who left with his wife.

Paula and Ana walk up to Herlinda to find out about the Anthurium Queen contest to the amazement of Herlinda and Molondron.

Aliria finally gets Cesar Luis's full attention as he reveals that Marely told him, "Juan is returning to his pueblo just to find YOUR wife." CL scowls with his cigarette as we get the reality check line.

Next time. Ana urges a return home but Paula is holding out for Juan's arrival...

>Thanks Cheryl...appreciated all the little translations sprinkled throughout the recap. For me this episode was extremely frustrating...one of those "teases" the writers run on us...I think it's been a week of Juan and Paula trying to connect and nothin' doin'.
On the other hand, we do get to see Angarita changing. When he first found out about Gaytan he was dismissive and hostile...and he has slowly evolved into a compassionate, generous, loving brother, accepting of a lifestyle he formerly denigrated.
On the other hand, Paula is still the same gorgeous nightmare she's ever been!

Welcome back Cheryl. You have such a colorful writing style and the recap was a joy to read.

I found it very interesting that Kike commented that Marely is the only one who really loves Juan! I had to do a rewind on that one. I suppose it's another teaser that won't go anywhere, even though we all think she is much better for Juan than Paula.

Can I admit something? I almost cried a little tear when Anga was being sweet to Pastor and told him he always had a place with him.

I laughed when Delirio called Juan a Tlacoyo de Frijol. I remember way back when somebody called Lety (La Fea) a Tlaconete and there was a lively discussion on what that is. There were also a couple of other slang descriptions last night that were familiar as well (that Maricruz has translated for us). See? Some of this stuff really does sink in!

Thanks Cheryl!! I loved this episode and your recap was a huge help.

Oops, I just realized upon re-reading that I wrote Tlaconete instead of Tlacoyo, and don't we all know thanks to Keel Haulin Lea Dread that Tlaconete is a slimy salamander.

I sure hope that next time I try to order a Tlacoyo de Frijol (Juan) or Tlacoyo de Maiz (Lety)I don't order a Tlaconete instead!

Hi Cheryl,
Sorry I've been sort of incommunicado, this is not my favorite time of year, but things will surely be looking up in another week or so. My favorite part of this episode was Angarita and Pastor, too. Still cannot stand Paula. Does she think she's going to enter the beauty contest?

Cheryl, welcome back and thanks for a wonderful recap! Your writing style is lovely and really paints the picture! (Not to mention your ability to wade through the slang and get the meat). Thanks for the vocab!

“look at the expression on Ana's face and you will know mine too. She looks as though she has been through the wringer with this inconstant, fuzzy thinking daughter” ROTFL! She does look all wrung out, doesn’t she? Great simile!

“She's not going to look back, come what may. Whatever that means to a twit brain...” LOL! She clearly doesn’t realize she’s looking back at Juan whom she already dismissed from her life. The grass was greener….

“Monica looks almost as teary-eyed as Gaytan but says nothing against CL's harsh rejection.” I certainly felt teary-eyed for Pastor. He made some serious mistakes when he stole the money before, but if CL welcomed him back, CL shouldn’t be doing this now.

“he lizards enfold him with more hugs and tears, the only emotions we've ever seen from some of these reptiles” LOL! Great picture of this scene, Cheryl!

“It's the limit of ignominious abuse he reaches a crescendo of classic Alirio pomposity.” I was just rolling my eyes with the drama of Delirio last night. He really outdid himself.

“Anga is the warmest, most emotionally centered character we've met for months on this show.” Amen! Anga is a real breath of fresh air.

Oh, Anga and Pastor setting up house should prove very diverting. One can only imagine the friction about what needs to be discarded and changed (Anga said no, but Pastor will never live with the no if the décor makes him crazy enough).

“Paula says, how strange he is acting. He is so complacent, maybe he is changing. (yeah honey, snakes do get new skins every so often).” ROTFLLL!! Oooh, nice one, Cheryl!

“strange coincidence that this is also the pueblo where the Japanese flower business was supposed to work with Paula to develop Farrell's interests in the anthurium market. (Does this mean she doesn't know about Juan's involvement?)” No, I don’t think so. And CL only learned about it recently. It was a well-kept secret.

Loved everyone's comments! Especially the teaser observations--yep, that's what it felt like, all right.

Jeanne

Great recap Cheryl, so, Monica doesn't want CL back? I thought she was doing all of this to get him back, I guess I underestimated her thirst for vengeance. Poor CL he doesn’t even know what is in store for him.
I’ve always been on the Marely-Juan ship and I thought that it was starting to sink when Marely started going out with Fer, but yesterday I felt a little breeze blowing it sails when Kike stated that the only woman that loves Juan is Marely. Don’t you think this the way the writers are letting us know that this is the real relationship in the story? I can’t see how Paula would be able to redeem herself. I know that in Telenovela land a lot of things could happen but like my grandma used to say “árbol que crece torcido jamas su tronco endereza”. Just my two cents

Maricruz, Thanks, I really like that phrase: “árbol que crece torcido jamas su tronco endereza” I came across it a few months back on some episode, I even forget which telenovela, but it seems so true. How lucky you are that your learned all these rich picturesque phrases from your abuelita.
