La Traición, Tue., April 29 - Bye Bye Vlad, Jeremias and Enrico; Alcides transforms from broke loser to rich, martial arts guy

We continue the transition to the new characters and plot so there are only token appearances by Hugo and Soledad.

In the cave, Alcides tells Vlad that he must be confused. There’s no treasure in the Obragon house. Alcides knows it well. “Besides,” says Alcides, “they’re broke. I’ve helped them several times.” Vlad says that built the house for Jeremias. He never met the man but he built a secret vault in the house for the treasure.

Paquito comes into see Rebeca. He is angry. He tells her never to speak to him that way in front of Eloisa again. Rebeca says, “How dare you defend her?” Paquito says that Rebeca’s problem is jealousy. Rebeca says that she doesn’t believe that. She knows that Eloisa is the only one he’s interested in. But I guess sloppy seconds are ok because she launches herself on Paquito.

On the train to San Marino, Michelle tells Andres that she is so happy that she is cured. Even if Daniel doesn’t believe it, she knows it’s true. Now all they have to do is find Daddy Chirac’s notebooks and prove it. The best thing about being cured is that she can find love, have a family, etc. Andres says that they are like siblings (I bet he wants more) and he likes to see the sparkle in her eyes, etc. She asks if Andres has brought their weapons and he says of course, together they are invincible.

Alcides asks Vlad how much money he is talking about. Vlad says he likes that Alcides is ambitious. The contractors who built the house knew they had to kill him to keep the secret. They tried. That’s why he had to get out of town. (Why didn’t the contractors just steal the treasure, then?) Alcides chuckles at the thought of all the rough economic times that the Obragons have lived through without ever knowing that there was a treasure in their house.

Ester tells Lucas that Antonia is at Dr. Max’s. He wants to go get her but Ester says that she isn’t coming back to this house. Ester says that Antonia came to take of Soledad. Soledad doesn’t live here anymore and now Ester doesn’t want her to continue living with them. Lucas is impactado.

Antonia thanks Dr. Max for all he has done for her. Dr. Max says that Los Burque are waiting to take her to the convent. (ok, I misunderstood yesterday when Antonia said that it was too late to go to the convent, she meant too late in the evening. That’s where she still wants to go – but it appears to be the same night.) Anyway, a woman brings in a man who has been shot and Antonia goes back inside to help and Dr. Max shrugs his shoulders and follows. Dr. Max is impressed with Antonia’s medical skills. He asks her to be his assistant. She says that she wants to go to the convent. He says that she will just waste her time there praying. Dr. Max says that he is spending his time studying Aurora’s disease. Antonia replies that she could never live alone with a man. "Fine," says Dr. Max, "if you don't trust me, go to the convent." Antonia hesitates.

Paquito tells Rebeca not to worry about Eloisa. He loves Eloisa but he lusts after Rebeca. Some lust ensues when suddenly Eloisa walks in on them. She is impactada!! The confrontation between Rebeca, Paquito and Eloisa is loud and involves a lot of slapping. At the end, Rebeca orders Eloisa out of her house. (Oh no, I can guess where she's going to go.)

In of the few scenes with Soledad and Hugo, Soledad tells Ursula (again) that she has to stay with Alcides to help her daughter. Boris tells Hugo (again) that the PoV will be very hard on him. Hugo says that he is going against his beliefs and principles. He can't stop the pain he feels inside him. That they both feel. He can't.

Margot staggers back into the tavern babbling about the "la muerta" (the dead woman). She attacks Manrique and he says that she is crazy. Margot tells everyone in the tavern that she isn't crazy. Dr. Max has a dead woman floating in green liquid in a cabinet. Guillermo and Elena come in and try to make everyone believe that Margot is drunk or crazy or both. Omar fires Margot. She begs him to give her another chance. She has a son. Elena thinks Guillermo is the father but he denies it.

Vlad tells Alcides that all he is looking for is an honorable man who can walk the streets of San Marino without any problems. (boy, has he got the wrong person!). Alcides says that he is an upright person. No one would suspect him. (He doesn't mention the slight complication of the fact that has an identical twin and that presumably everybody thinks he's dead.) Vlad says that Alcides has to learn to defend himself. He never knows when he will be attacked by his enemies. If Alcides does what he is asked, Vlad offers him half the treasure. "Deal," says Alcides.

Antonia tells Lucas that she has decided to stay with Dr. Max.

Vlad teaches Alcides martial arts and meditation on a moonlit cliff while a Red-tailed Hawk calls in the background. Then he learns to walk on red-hot coals and shoot watermelons. Finally, Vlad says Alcides is ready to return to San Marino. He shows Alcides the lucky talisman that he wears around his neck. It looks like a piece of amber (and hardly seems in the style of the jewelry from the rest of the novela). It is his only souvenir from the war. Vlad tells Alcides how to find the treasure and says that he needs to leave right away. Vlad thinks that the treasure might be found by others soon. Vlad warns Alcides not to betray him or he will kill Soledad. Alcides say that they made a deal like gentlemen and he'll keep his word. (If this is the old Alcides, we know that won't happen. We'll see.)

The train is still approaching San Marino. Daniel tells Michelle and Andres that they have to be careful. The city is very dangerous. His father was killed there underneath a train (well, not exactly. He was killed in the train station but not near a train.) Daniel says that besides helping the little girl, he wants to find his father's murderer. Andres and Michelle say that they are able to take care of themselves.

Max studies old Dr. Chirac's writings for a clue to something that will help his Eva. Antonia overhears and asks, "Who's Eva?" Dr. Max asks if she is spying on him. Antonia answers that she was only cleaning up the mess. Dr. Max doesn't want Antonia messing with his stuff and she's especially not to go in his bedroom. (You may have gotten more than you bargained for in Antonia, Dr. Max.)

Los Burque want to help Margot. Guillermo offers Elena as a temporary replacement waitress to Omar. He agrees is Guillermo will go back to playing the violin. There is much silliness in the tavern. Margot seems to have come to terms with what she saw. She goes back to the tavern and leaves the diminutive duo with a big bill for the damages they caused in the tavern. Guillermo has an idea of how to get the money. He will work in the mine.

Hugo goes to see Soledad and thinks how much he wants to tell her that he is Hugo. Soledad thinks how much Alcides looks at her like Hugo.

Rebeca tells Lucas that he found Ester crying in front of Jeremias' tomb. Lucas doesn't believe it. Rebeca suggests that Lucas keeps his eyes open. Ester could have been Jeremias' lover and Soledad could be his daughter. Later, in the orchid garden, Lucas asks Enrico if Ester and Jeremias were more than friends. Ester overhears. She comes out of the bushes before Enrico can answer and asks Lucas how he can think such a thing. Lucas says that her behavior has always given him doubts. Ester says Lucas is always so drunk he doesn't know what he is talking about. She tells Enrico to beat it and suggests that Lucas leave as well. (Their reconciliation didn't last too long.) Lucas refuses and says that he isn't going to be the loser he has been for his whole life. He will conquer his alcohol problem. Ester is not convinced.

Jeremias, the world's most useless ghost, tells Enrico that something terrible is going to happen. The treasure is going to be stolen. To prevent this, Jeremias will tell Enrico where the treasure is. His punishment for doing this is that Enrico will never see him again. He tells Enrico where the map is hidden in his bed. Enrico finds it and Jeremias disappears in a puff of smoke.

Alcides arrives in town and sees Hugo walking with Soledad. He vows that he will get Soledad back and he will never be separated from her again. He will see his brother begging him for food. Hugo has no idea what is in store for him.

Arturo is in the tavern. He hires two lowlife mine workers to keep him informed about what is going on in the mine and when the vein of gold is found, he wants them to steal all they can. They agree.

Soledad tells Hugo that she is going to start converting the house into a hospital. She wants it to look nice so that wealthy people will make donations. Hugo says that cleaning and painting is not the job for a Society lady. He will send some workers to help her. Soledad doesn't want this but Hugo insists and she leaves, annoyed. Boris says that Soledad seems very confident about her hospital project. Marina has to say that she is only paying for her sins. She says that Soledad is incapable of such kindness. Boris tells Marina to keep her opinions to herself.

Alcides approaches the Obragon house, opens a padlock and finds the treasure. (Wow, that was easy. He didn’t even have to dig up anything.) The treasure is much more than he expected (it kind of looks like the treasure in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie). Alcides says that even if has to share with Vlad or 10 men like Vlad, he will still be incredibly rich. He can get Soledad back with all this. Enrico comes into the vault. Alcides hides. Enrico says that now he is rich but Alcides gives him the Vulcan nerve pinch and says that he's come too late.

Alcides drives a wagon full of treasure back to Vlad's (I guess he was going to keep his part of the bargain) but he's too late. Vlad has been hung and a bunch of guys with guns are there. Martial arts master Alcides kills them all. It looks like Enrico gets killed as well. Alcides takes off his Medina jewelry and puts on Vlad's talisman, which didn't do Vlad very much good. He thanks Vlad for not only saving his life but making him a man, a very rich man for which he will always be eternally grateful. The credits roll.

Great job, Jean. "..Jeremias, the world's most useless ghost..." I LOVE it!

Ok, I haven't seen the whole episode yet, but when Alcides just walked up to this supposedly secret(?)room somewhere in(?) the Obregon house, opened this padlock & walked right into what appears to be the showroom at "Treasures Are Us", I laughed out loud. Jeremias must have been in such a hurry when he loaded up the place that he neglected to cover anything up, or close any of the treasure chests. How nice for us! Can't wait to watch the rest of it. Too funny...

Great detailed recap Jean - thanks --
Did anyone else see the mistake of the white-haired man wearing contemporary clothing in one of the "village" scenes? Only lasted a second but this guy was there in a shirt and khakis ---
Those that haven't seen the episode yet should watch for him
Looks like the new gal Michelle has her eyes set on Alcides/Hugo already just from the picture in the paper -- will be interesting to see just which one she ends up with and how that all works out -- when the real Alcides comes back I'm wondering how we are going to know who's who --- guess the new jewelry will help by being a clue - so sad for the "real" Hugo that I think he's already lost Solidad to the "real" Alcides -- never liked his switching plan anyway -- and I think he's gone way too far now to tell her who he really is -- I don't think she could forgive him
Very sad -- wonder if the real Alcides has experienced enough to change and become like the old Hugo -- time will tell --

Yes, they are obviously getting rid of the whole treasure hunt thing as fast as possible. Bing, bang treasure found. I wonder how much longer Rebeca, Hercu-less and Paquito are going to be looking for it or will they just no longer mention it?

Who's going to keep up the orchid garden at the Obragon house now that Enrico has gone to that big orchid garden in the sky? I guess young Dr. Chirac will find out about it soon.

Hi,

I am very impressed with you ladies because you are still chugging along with La Traicion. I lost interest long time ago and only pipe in to read the recaps. And even with the superb job Jean is doing with the recaps I am losing interest.

So, now Enrico has died after everything he’s gone thru and right after he finds the treasure.

Wasn’t Vlad the ultimate master in martial arts? How come he got himself killed and Alcides, his trainee kills everybody.

I am not going to complain about the novella not moving forward at all. But, I would like to know what your take on Alcides becoming rich is.

Is Alcides now going to become Hugo? Is he going to come back a la Count of Montecristo?

Soledad is falling for Hugo/Alcides. Now if Alcides comes back as Hugo what is she going to do? I really never understood the switching thing I think it is very confusing and a lack of writer’s imagination.

I am sorry about all the ranting but, I am really frustrated about how the novella has developed.

Can't help you Sue. Whoever is in charge is dumping old story lines and characters and adding new ones and who knows what will happen. I've seen this happen before when a novela was in ratings trouble. We are going to have more sex if the new credits are any indication and more fighting if Alcides' training and the addition of the fencers is any indication.

The writers put themselves at a standstill with the Hugo/Soledad situation. I don't know where they were going to go but we're obviously going somewhere else now.

I'd be surprised if they create a situation where Hugo and Alcides interact a lot. Every scene has to be shot twice, which is expensive. I didn't thing that would happen until the end of the novela.

I don't think I'm going to like the changes because I liked it the way it was before - a lot. So I'm pretty upset. At least I'll have the first 50 episodes I can enjoy.

Every time they have the train scenes where the passengers are swaying back and forth (if they remember) to make it look like they are aboard a moving train, I think of the Star Trek series. In that show they “lurched” whenever there was phaser fire. There should be a section on the actor’s resume that says “lurches well with others.”

I’m sorry, but my dislike for Michelle is totally off the charts. You can almost hear some prompter saying “look troubled (or coy) (or thoughtful) (or sultry) (or wipe away a non-existent tear).” Then the scene switches to Soledad and Ursula and their interaction is so seamlessly done that you forget they are acting (a primo example of good acting). Sorry about the rant!

I loved the in-house fight with Eloisa, Rebeca and Paquito. Eloisa was IMPACTADA in the extreme and her expression was priceless. Then the screaming and slapping began. It was like watching six-year olds have simultaneous temper tantrums. Paquito finally wised up and exited.

Luc-ass believed Rebeca rather than his own wife. Now I’m impactada!

Concerning Alcides. He has no visible scarring from his repeated floggings at the LNof P. He also rode into town without any disguise. How was he going to explain himself if someone spotted him? Wow, that treasure room was sooo well hidden. At least they could have made the entrance door of stone. Don’t you think that as inquisitive as Soledad is that she would have stumbled on this padlocked door as a child. That treasury was stocked with a year’s worth of bangles and baubles from Oriental Trading Company. And once again we see that handy Vulcan nerve pinch being utilized.

Regarding the showdown at the end: I was sorry to see Vlad killed off so quickly. I hope the actor was a local because it hardly paid him to pack his bags for only two episodes. Alcides quickly disposed of (I quickly lost track of the number) the bad guys, including catching a knife in his bare hands. The Grasshopper has exceeded the Master. Did they really kill off Enrico? I guess he was extra baggage since he would have blabbed to everyone about the tesoro.

I reiterate that I think Alcides will come back as Hugo but we’ll be able to recognize him because he will be wearing Vlad’s talisman. And he will have all of that booty to pay for his very own PoV (and this will be HUGE).

So far I’m intrigued as to where the writers are going to take us. Jean, you can’t give upon LT !! I need you!

By the way, I did see the white-haired man in modern dress. I thought he might be in the background but he was walking almost straight at the camera (it’s about 20 minutes into the show). I would have missed that blooper if Molly hadn’t mentioned it.

Sadly (I think), I will be missing tonight and tomorrow night! We are in the process of moving. Did anyone happen to catch the chat with Mario? I missed it also.

Oh my! Please, tell me that they are going to kill the new character Michelle off soon. She so doesn't fit in this novela. I was upset enough when they married Boris off to Marina, but this is just too much!

I'm guessing that someone keeps up with all of the blogs and chats concerning LT. I noticed that after many people made fun of Ester's sausage curls, her hairstyle changed. I hope that they notice that no one likes Michelle and they GET RID OF HER!!!!

I just can't explain why I don't like her so but I don't.

Anyway, can't wait for the recaps for the next couple of nights. Thank you Jean, you are a life saver!

Jean: Before I get too deep into my venting about this episode, I noticed a translation difference with what you stated in your recap.

When you reported that Young Dr. Von Chirac said that his father was killed “under the train” (which you rightfully disagreed with), I think what he actually said was he was killed “..apenas bajó el tren”, or “just after getting down from (off)” the train. I think he was using the verb “bajar” in the third person, past tense, and not the preposition “bajo” (under). Just the slight difference in accent makes it a more sensible statement.

I only caught this because of your mention of it in the recap, and, since Vlad is already gone and I can scarcely stand to watch Mario Cimarro any more out of disgust for both Hugo and Alcides, I’m watching Young Dr. Von Chirac much more closely since his debut the other day. ;-) If Soledad meets him soon, at this point I’d have to tell her to grab Dr. Honey Hair, her daughter, a bag of treasure and a fistful of “orchis vivantis” and get the heck out of Dodge!!!

Oriana, I wish this was like “Survivor: LaTraicion” and it was as simple as just voting Michelle off the island. It would be cool to think that someone connected to LT was reading our thoughts on these very serious matters. But if we have any input, it probably only extends as far as sausage curls, and I doubt even that. Good luck with your moving. My sympathies are with you!

Jean, do you know what’s going on with the Mabouchita site? I’ve been checking daily and nothing has been submitted since Episode #63 (Monday, 4-28). Also, how did the Telemundo chat with Mario work? At first I thought it was going to be a live video with him but now I think it was just a chat room question-and-answer session.

Nancy

Oh my gosh; I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard since this show started. But that’s not necessarily a GOOD thing…This was by far the goofiest episode to date.

Jean, it certainly seems your suspicion about dialing up the sex factor might be true. The new opening credits definitely have a tone that’s more racy than romantic, and Paquito & Rebeca were in rare form in this episode. Although, I did think the cat fight between Reb & Eloisa was extraordinarily well-acted – some of those slaps sounded WAY too real!! – I got a big kick out of it. I can’t believe Frankie stopped it; I thought he’d be laughing his head off.

If something is needed to boost the ratings here, why do you suppose that is? Did Telemundo NOT do a proper job of promoting this show, as viewers have been alleging all over YouTube for a long time? Or did they make the classic telenovela story error - start out with a great but half-baked idea, then play it out too long & watch it dissolve into crap, losing a big chunk of their audience in the process, then resort to all kinds of stupid “deus ex machina” devices to turn things around? Do these producers never learn? I watched a Youtube interview with Mario yesterday & he talked about how telenovelas are written by a single person, not a staff of writers like shows in the States. (He cited the comedy series, “Friends” as an example. I had to do a double-take; why cite that show, unless because it’s one he knows & obviously feels works.) If that is the case, then for crying out loud, get more input for the scripts!!!

As for my laugh moments:

1) Oh the training sequences were so silly! Thanks, Jean, for “Then he (Alcides) learns to walk on red-hot coals and shoot watermelons.” I read that before watching the episode & when it came up, I had a seriously good belly-laugh. Obviously the melon-shooting was the culmination of everything he had learned, because it was the last skill he mastered before Vlad sent him out on his mission! I was also gratified to see that Alcides picked up proper “open shirt/expose chest” styling tips. I’d hate for him to look silly by doing it wrong… ;-)

2) Thank God for Los Burke!!! They saved this episode. We were also blessedly spared from too much Arturo, and Michelle.

3) I also take umbrage at the fact that the raiders killed Vlad The Teacher, but “Grasshopper” Alcides somehow managed to slay them all, single-handedly. Polite raiders, they were, apparently; even though they all appeared to have guns, no more than one at a time ever made any attempt to shoot Alcides, thus allowing him to pick them off, one by one. They must have known he was a novice & wanted to make it easy on him. ;-) That plus that “honor among thieves” thing maybe, huh?

Must go to bed. Approaching "snarky meltdown" threshold....

I watched Episode #65 (Wednesday) without benefit of a recap. Wow! I was on the edge of my seat and holding my breath once the mine action started all the way to the end! I can hardly wait to read the recap and watch again. Way to go LT!!!

Nancy

Marie Celeste, I forgot to thank you for expanding my education. I had never heard of the term “deus ex machina” so I had to check that out on the Internet. That’s what I love about this site! I’ve learned so many things plus I’m having so much fun sharing the good times and the snarks.
