Fuego, Wed., July 16: Get yourself a lab coat and a stethoscope, and you too can be a Mexican doctor!
Buenas noches a todos. Here we go…
So we start tonight with flashbacks of the Reyes bros. receiving news of Libia’s death. Remember how the local “authorities” left her face-down in that river over night? Or how the Reyes bros. left their sister’s casket in a cave, and then wrapped their hands around a prickly bush? Ah, and who can forget Juan’s fateful vow to seek vengeance on the Elizondo family? Well, things have certainly changed. Believe it or not, Juan has come to his senses and wants the Elizondo family to know the truth.
Eva visits Sofia to tell her that Gabi has suffered another crisis. This time the “attack” was provoked by meek little Eva spilling the beans about the baby she had with Bernie.
Eva wants to talk to a more than reluctant Juan. Apparently it’s about her last secret ever-she swears. Now, more than ever, she is sure that the boys must know that Rosario is her daughter.
Gabi is strategizing with Fernie. She tells him that God is on her side, and that He knows exactly what she is suffering. She also says that she had a real fainting incident that was confirmed by the doctor in the local clinic; now no one can say she’s a liar. “Every cloud has a silver lining” chimes in Fernie the optimist. He asks what provoked the fainting, and she answers that it was caused by Eva’s revelation about her relationship with Bernie and their daughter Rosie.
Frankie, who’s really behind the times, asks Eva if Rosie knows that Eva is her mother. Yes she knows, but Eva doesn’t want to disclose any more information than that. Oscar throws a hissy-fit about the whole ordeal. We are then interrupted by Quinti who informs the group that Sofia has left the building. Juan, outraged, wants to know who would ever let her go anywhere by herself. Eva tells Juan that she went to see her mother on the ranch.
As Sofia is going up the stairs she is stopped by her husband. Fernie has forbid her to see her mother because she causes her way to many problems. Then the conversation switches subjects and concerns Sofia’s relationship with Juan. As we know, Juan is a real man who has given Sofia things that Fernie never could. Blah, blah, blah. Interestingly enough, Fernie makes his little scrunchy face and grabs Sofia’s arm. I really don’t know why he feels so attached to a woman with whom he no longer lives, and deep down despises. Anyway, he tells her that she’s a whore, and that she is never allowed to come back. Juan to the rescue! “Don’t you talk to my girl that way!” Punch, boom, bang, etc. The two men, who are notorious for their high levels of testosterone, battle it out over a woman who, frankly, isn’t worth the nosebleed. Fernie goes for the punch…and it’s bad! He hits the horse in the painting. Now it’s Gabi to the rescue! She has miraculously risen out of bed and has a gun! The fight’s over boys…
Gabi is on her little soap box, explaining that if she shot Juan, it would be justified because he has caused her a lot of suffering. She creeps down the stairs like an animal on the prowl. Little Fernie hides behind the rot iron whispering “Do it, do it. Kill ‘em.” Juan even tells Gabi to kill himself, but then he remembers his son, and tells Gabi not to kill her grandson. She doesn’t care because the kid’s a bastard. Here comes Eva as surprised as ever. Gabi tells Juan and Sofia that they don’t deserve to be happy, and she wishes that they never find happiness. Sofia freaks out, though I don’t know why because this is like the billionth time that Gabi has told her this, and reminds Gabi that she is her daughter, therefore she has to love her! “You are mistaken, bitch” says Gabi (loosely translated).
Meanwhile, in the jungle Gramps calls home, he is talking to dumb and dumber about consulting with his doctor friend about Gabi’s “illness.” Eva barges in and tells them that something bad is going down over at the other set, and that they better get over there ASAP. Yeah, leave it to a worry-wart, two boobs, and a senior in a wheel chair to stop the show-down.
Gabi’s got her finger on the trigger, and with a stern look she tells Sofia that she doesn’t want to be Sofia’s mother anymore. If only it were that simple… She aims, Sofia and Juan look into each other’s eyes, and she is startled by Frankie’s entrance; he’s got a gun, and he’s ready to shoot. At the same time he comes in, so do the negotiators. Gramps cries, and everyone is safe. Oh darn, no one important died…
Ofelia goes to some school to enroll Pablito, but she doesn't have his documents and therefore cannot enroll him. Fine time for this little scene, eh? Sometimes I seriously believe that I could produce a better version of this novela in my back yard with the local neighborhood kids.
Just when we thought the fight was over, Juan has to make his speech about leaving for good, and how it’s not worth hanging around the ranch. Frankie and Oscar keep their guns aimed at Gabi, while she sort of aims hers at Juan. Juan and Sofia leave together.
Padre Tadeo pays a visit to his new friend in jail. He wants more information about Mapache’s death so that he can bail his friend out. The friend relates that Mapache muttered something about Fernando Escardon, a.k.a. Fernie!
Gabi is crushed. Fernie reproaches her for not killing Juan, and thus ending all of their problems. Gabi says that it isn’t time for that just yet.
Sofia is dabbing Juan’s wounds and apologizing for going to see her mother. This reminds me of the oddly-romantic scene in Beauty and the Beast when Belle is treating the Beast’s wounds, who closely resembles Juan in character and physique. Anyway, Juan tells Sofia that he is really sorry that her mother hates her, and he feels sort of guilty for all of their problems. Well, he’s right about something… Sofia disregards this statement, and explains that Gabi has always hated her and her father. But that’s not all, and Sofia feels that something else has to be behind all of this hate that Gabi has for her.
Eva visits Gabi in her bedroom, and tells her that she is more than ready to get the hell out of the freakish place Gabi calls home. “No way” says Gabi. Eva must stay because that will be her punishment; she will be forced to watch the Elizondo family disintegrate as a result of her actions. Eva corrects her, and says that Gabi is the reason everyone is so messed up. Eva tries to leave, but Gabi makes her come back; she wants to know how long she and Bernie had a thing. As we know, it was a one-night thing, where Eva got Bernie drunk and shut the lights off. All she wanted to do what put the geezer in bed, but it was really dark that night. Batta-boom, batta-bing, Eva’s knocked-up and you know the rest… Gabi tells Eva that she is worthless, and she feels sorry for her. Gabi tells her that her punishment will be her daughter will never forgive her. Call me crazy, but why the hell does Eva hang around the Elizondo dump when she clearly wants to leave? I thought she was above letting some crazy old bitch control her every move.
Gramps visits Gabi. He wants to know why she tried to kill Juan and her daughter. He begs her to reconcile, and he tells her that he is sorry for everything that she has become. He warns her that if she doesn’t reconcile soon, she is going to be alone. Gabi doesn’t buy his story, and tells him to get out because he makes her sick. She cries, he cries, end of story.
Things are kinda hot at the Tumbao…if you’re 15, and into the Rainforest Café scene… Niurka is desperately in love with Oscar, and is trying to understand this love triangle that exists between the Reyes bros. and the Elizondo girls. She is happy to know that Rosario is not her competition as she suspected, and therefore makes the first move (of the day, that is).
Sarita and Jimena are arguing about Gabi. Sarita asks Jimena to cool it, and Jimena says that she doesn’t like how Gabi bans her from seeing Sofia. Sarita explains that Gabi’s health is not the greatest, and therefore she doesn’t respond too well when provoked. No kidding. Blah, blah, blah. Jimena is sure that Oscar loves her, blah, blah, blah.
Oscar tells Niurka that she’s a nice girl an all, but he is in love with Jimena. Niurka tells him that this is the first time a man has turned her down. The least they can do is have a drink together. Oscar agrees to “only one.” Once she gets some alcohol in him, Niurka goes for the gold and makes a move to kiss him. He leaves, and she is beside herself because she loves him so much.
Sofia commends Juan for being such a good brother/father. She then asks him about the vengeance he mentioned to her. He starts with the story about his sister dying. Then he says that ever since he met Sofia he gave up that silly vengeance thing. That almost makes sense… He tells Sofia that he will do anything in the world to make sure she is safe and well. They kiss, he holds her…
So Gramps has gone to the clinic to introduce himself to the new doctor. Gramps tells the guy that he has decided to visit the clinic regularly because it has expanded its staff and obtained new medicines. Gramps introduces himself as a doctor, which really goes to show you that as long as you wear a lab coat and a stethoscope, you too can be a Mexican doctor. Gramps pulls out some forged document he got from Gabi, and asks the guy to check it out. The guy says that it is okay, and commented that her disease requires a lot of time to cure itself.
Family unit A and family unit B both go to mass and sit on opposite sides of the aisle. Don’t you love how Juan only bothers to button the last two buttons on his shirt? It’s not like it’s hot outside because Fernie wears a leather jacket. But then again, I should consider that Juan has less than a fourth-grade education, and thinks that Gramps is the smartest guy since Socrates. Coincidently, today’s mass is about loving your children, regardless of what they do, and to let your heart free itself of hate and grudges. Gabi is offended by this, and makes family unit A leave the church, but not before she slaps Sofia a good one. Well gosh, tt’s not like she was giving the sermon…
Tomorrow: Now, more than ever, the Elizondo girls are about to lose the loves of their lives because they are marrying some dim-wits next week on account of their bitchy mother. What else is new?

Thanks for the recap Nicholas. I agree with you about Eva. I can't understand why anyone especially someone whose not a member of this family would put up with Gabi and her abuse (both verbal and physical). Gabi's been on quite a rampage lately. It's very disturbing to watch her continued abuse.
Also not be critical or try to censor you but you may want to revise your statement about documents and Mexicans. Feel free to ignore this suggestion.

Nicolas, thanks for a wicked good recap! I am on the West Coast, and I read it before watching the show, which greatly enhances the actual TV viewing.
Now then...when Rosario left to go on "gira", what happened to all the bouncing back-up dancers who used to shake it up at the BadLove Bar? Why aren't they filling in for her? (granted, those are some big "shoes" to fill...). And, how does Johnny & Co. make any money on "gira" if the locals just crowd into the town square to hear the performance? I'm just sayin'.
And are the writers for this show in an isolation booth? Do you think they pay attention to viewer comments?

Nicolas: Thanks for the fast and snarky recap. This group is enough to drive you crazy!! Nothing that anyone does makes sense.
But I must say I am enjoying Diana Bracho's performance. Not only is she mean and evil, but she really is a hysteric.Some commenters have called her a"sociopath." Technically, she isn't, as a sociopath does evil things without having any emotional reaction --such as Sara in QUERIDA ENIMIGA.A sociopath doesn't have any conscience.Gabi justifies whatever she does, including using religion. And when she is acting out, she tends to cry and have crazy emotional outbursts and responses. She never looks calm when she is being horrendous, as Sara does. Even when she and Fernando are kissing, she's crying, fighting him, and sexually turned on all at the same time. Although we all love to hate Crabi, i think the actress is fun and interesting to watch.

I love E Y but I was really rooting for Crabi to pull the trigger. Sofia runs to see Mommy right after Juan almost croaked from Mommy's lashings. And Juan, of course, must rescue our damsel in distress. I was even feeling for Feo after Sofia dissed him saying he was jealous because she found her true man.
And Eva, telling the boys she is so sure Rosario is her hija even though she knows nothing about her and has never heard of DNA testing, is really trying my patience.
Okay, I feel better now.

What a funny recap! Loved your description of meek little Sofia as "frankly not worth the nosebleed" and your reference to Sarita and Jimena as "dumb and dumber". You're always a great read, Nicolas...thank you.

I don't get it..I just don't get it. WTF? Not that I am a Crabi fan (oh who am I kidding, if only I could horsewhip & threaten to shoot..all the bad people who have wronged me; Sweet) but I digress. Was the lady that stopped to talk to Hortensia one of the ones who was involved in the stoning? She looked like the one that was in the front so I wasn't sure.
Annie Got Her Gun. I felt like I was watching that alltime great Broadway show. I learned to shoot a rifle when I was 15 , and nearly fell off the porch. Rifles are pretty heavy ,and the recoil is powerful . If tiny, frail Crabapple had shot at Juan, she probably would have done a backward sommersault over the bannister...knocking the lurking Ferd over in the process. [That would have been mustsee TV.] ''Don't you love the way Juan only manages to button the last two buttons on his shirt.'' I know that you meant this to be a rhetorical question, but I am going to answer it with a resounding YES, YESSS, YESSSS....the answer is...yes, I do love it...a lot. Where was I ??? Oh, it was fun to see Abuelo back in costume. Suggestion : It might be fun to see Gramps in drag...maybe one of Rosario's old costumes from her days at the BadLove Bar. Nicolas: awesome recap! Loved the snark, the Snofia "not worth a nosebleed comment," and the blah blah blahs (is the endless repetition just filler or do they think we're as dumb as the characters?).
Why does ANYONE stay at Hacienda de Agony? Is Eva an indentured servant? Are Sneerita & Abs of Steel chained by some invisible leash?
Talk about dropping some major league hints about Crabi & Snofia and whether or not they're related. Somehow, I think Snofia would feel a whole lot better if she found out she wasn't related to Crabi Psycho Pants.
Loved the comments about Tumbao! And Feo lurking in the potted palms...hmmm...what was that about? Surprised they didn't have the snake soundtrack in the background.
More sloppy editing with the school scene...que the hell? We go from shootout to sign-up day at la escuela then back to shootout. Um, not exactly a flowing sequence of events.

LOL big time at this recap! I think my favorite description was your comparison of Juan to the Beast.
This has got to be one of the worst novelas ever written, but somehow I just can't stay away.
The costumes are bad, the dialogue is absurd, and I've had it with Sofia and Juan. But, Crabi is an awesome psycho, and I love to tune in to see what kind of torture she's going to come up with next.

Enjoyed the breakfast recap, Nicholas. You said it perfectly - Sofia isn't worth the nosebleed! But she must be a great runner, to have gotten to that house in no time, when the horses took several minutes. Maybe those were 'telenovela' minutes. Another stupid 'heroine' who continually won't defend herself or her baby with just a little common sense. Oh well, back to reality...

great 'cap, Nick, plenty o snark...Why, oh why did Eva not just walk out, WTF does she owe Crabi?? One parting shot and- adios, bruja! And Sofia going back to la hacienda de horrors, and gets slapped again in churh? I guess that Crabi's promises aren't what one would want from a mommie dearest, eh? But DB is truly doing a great job as Crabi, and I'm starting to enjoy JS as Oscar more all the time, too. His expressions are really quite funny; his face is naturally expressive, and he makes the most of it...I diasagree, Sofia would be worth the nosebleed, if you could get her out of transporter range of Rancho Loco...Crabi was holding a 20 guage side-by-side shotgun. Not enough to really knock her over, but she wasn't holding it very convincingly, either. Was that scene an absolutely CLASSIC "Mexican standoff" or what?...Aren't we about due for a gentle reminder to Feo from el Coyote about the little deuda? El Jefe will be getting impatient, I would think...
I was thinking about the rooster shirts...since we can't find any what if we all just bought regular shirts and ironed on or sewed on rooster appliques? Surely we could find something like that on the internet. I will see what I can find.

Perhaps the Mexican woman didn't have his documents because she is merely the sister of the housekeeper who works for the family that took him in.
I see that Jimena is doing all the heavy lifting at the No-tell Hacienda.She even had her weight lifting belt on to go to mass. At least it beat the Ho-Down costume she had on at her father's memorial ceremony.

Nic: Fabulous recap. No way do I understand why either Eva or Sofia stay at the ranch. Maybe Eva has no where else to go and living at the ranch has become a bad habit she can't break.
The girls, Sofia being one of them, are victims of abuse. They just keep coming back for more. Maybe another doc that rocks will come visit and give them good advice to hit the road. Even Father Tad tried to tell Sofia that, but, she just doesn't listen. This carries maternal loyalty a little too far. It is in a world of its own.
But, like others have already said I'm hooked.

Paula: I watch sporadically, typically miss 1-2 shows a week, and sometimes fall asleep mid-episode.
However, I religiously read the recaps. Without this site, I don't think I could make it through FELS. This is the best part!

Nobody has Pablito's documents for school registration because among those documents should be his birth certificate from the municipio where he was born, and showing at least one parent's name (but best to have 2 parents' names). He had only an abuelita, and nobody has any other info on the kid.
I think this focus on documents is to show that he is really orphaned -- and how this develops is part of the ongoing underlying weaving of threads into the bigger web! ha ha this comment is just as clear as the storyline right?!

Super recap! My favorite was when you said that Eva told Gramps and the others that something was going on "at the other set"!, since while Gabi was holding the rifle, Eva went back to the bakery and the brothers and Gramps got all the way back to the hacienda before she could fire!
I also think it's funny that Juan, in his raving state, says "my sister, my sister", but not "Libia, Libia", because if he said that, the secret would be out!
By the way, I thought Jimena looked super hot in her green bare midriff outfit. Couldn't believe she actually went to church with the tummy covered (first time for that).

Eva missed her golden opportunity! I was yelling at her from the sofa: Tell the b&*%# you had a torrid, hot romance for 5 years with the husband who couldn't stand to be in the same room with her! Make her suffer! Then walk on outta there double time. But, no. Everyone has to stay around to suffer.
At least Sofía stuck a knife in Feo, showing more spirit than usual, letting him know that Big Juan was getting the job done that he couldn't.

I suspect that Feo might have a "performance problem" and can't get the job done unless he's terrorizing some poor defenseless woman. Shall we take bets on whethr Feo and Crabi will actually do the deed?

I can see the DHL and Fed Ex trucks lining up to deliver Gramp's endless outfits to the hacienda unless he has a local vendor. It would be nice if someone was tech savvy in the hacienda or pueblo. Probably not though.

I can too! He probably gets them from "Acme Costume Service" or "Costumes-R-Us." We need to add "doctor" to our list of costumes.
After reading the comments I was just wondering if there was a change in the recap about documents or if it is the way it was when Karen read it? No need to focus on it, but I was just curious.
I always saw poor Pablito as a vagabond kid whose poor grandmother struggled to take over care of him, and due to her failing health, could really just handle the bare minimum, mostly he was on his own.
I'd bet if he ever had papers in the first place, abuela might have been the only one to know where they might be, and if she is gone and didn't tell anyone....good luck finding them. It's hard to keep those things intact in a dilapidated shack....not a joke.

I appreciate the fine recap, Nic. Got stuck at work and missed most of this episode. (OK, I didn't miss all that much, since I got to see Gramps playing doctor.)

I've been blind most of the day thanks to a trip to the eye doctor who dilated my eyes. Most unpleasant. Everything's still kind of blurry.
Yes that woman who was speaking to Hortensia was one of the stoner chicks. So to speak. I thought she said something to Hortensia about it but I don't remember what. I think she thought the whole thing was funny.
I agree with Novelera that Eva should have said "Bernardo and I did it every night. And it was GOOD!"
As a corollary to my rule about how you don't have to let someone whip you just because they want to - you also don't have to let someone verbally abuse you just because she feels like it. Sheesh. Gabi says "I'm not finished being a bitch with you, you can't leave yet," I know Eva does only the absolute minimum to avoid being killed because she's timid, or whatever, but how much nerve does it take to walk out of a room?
I can't do a magazine cover for Eva. What she really needs is a page-a-day calendar. Like the ones that have the motivational sayings on them... except hers will be some way to put herself down or be humiliated.

Does anyone know if Maracuya's dance scene from this show was cut too? It seemed weird to me like the other one, that her dancing and singing was disjointed with the audience pans...
If it's true that she's in the doghouse with Univision (or was it Televisa or was it both) then it's probably fair to expect that all of her song and dance stuff is going to get edited mercilessly, leaving just enough to remind us that she does a show at the Tumbao, but not enough to provide us with any entertainment or any temptation to buy her music or go to her shows. (For those who might have been tempted.)

It seems kind of senseless and pointless to hire someone to play a hot, exotic dancer if you're not going to show the hot, exotic dancing. About Eva's daily motivational calendar...I usually buy one for myself each year with inspirational quotes that I read each morning at breakfast. This year , not much was left on the bookstore shelves by the time I got there except Zen wisdom. I have no idea what these sayings mean half the time. Sometimes they're mercifully brief, but often I have to read several puzzling paragraphs that leave me confused and wondering. Here's yesterday's message : ''Doing zazen, you become king of the world.'' It's sooo frustrating knowing that I could be king of the world .......if I just knew what ''zazen'' was.

It is art of just sitting and opening up the mind. Can any of us really do that? According to one Zen site, once you have unhindered your mind of its many layers you will realize your true Buddha nature. Wow, I bet I could get there is I just made my kids move out!

Creemelo...I was out late Wednesday and so I had taped it and didn't watch it until last night, then read the board. However, since I generally do that during my lunch I was having total withdrawls today at work. I had to go on youtube and watch the boys swim desnudos in the stream while Scarita looked on! It was the unfuzzed...um...unblurred I guess, I'm sure there was some fuzz, version. One of my employees busted me! Yes, I am hooked, admitting it is the first step right? Can't wait for tonight!
Thanks Nick for a very entertaining recap. I second that emotion about not having any sympathy for the girls abuse from Gabi. (I'm blocking on the name for people who get their kicks by being tied up or handcuffed and beaten). I saw one case on TV where a man had a leash around his neck and was down on all 4's being led around by a woman with a whip in her hand. He obeyed her every command. When interviewed, he said how much he enjoyed it. Since the girls can always find a way out of their rooms, I suggest that Crabi find handcuffs and fasten the girls to the bed. Sure, this would make Eva cry a bucket of tears, but Eva is creative and would surely find another source for her required "daily dose of hurt".

The recaps compliments this, but reading about it in English without watching it would not serve any purpose for me. Just got around to watching this episode and immediately came to the blog to see if anyone mentioned what I thought was really interesting. Did anyone notice the people walking on their knees toward the church? I would love to know if that is part of the culture in Mexico. Anyone?

I think the walking-on-the-knees thing is a sign of extreme penitence. I don't know how common it is these days - I thought it was more of a medieval thing.
I like the recaps, sometimes better than an individual episode, and they're definitely handy if I've missed something. But I prefer to read them as a companion to the show and not as a replacement for it. It's fun to watch an episode and then read the recap wondering "did this person see this the same way I did."
I've tried reading recaps for shows that I don't watch at all, and it just isn't the same. I'm too visual, I guess. If I read about something interesting that I didn't see, I'll want to watch it afterwards so that I can see it for myself.
As a kid I was just the opposite. It was very common in pre-VCR/cable days to have short story adaptations of popular TV shows, so that people could enjoy the "show" in between long-awaited reruns. Sometimes I got more attached to the short stories than to the original show. Everything looked so much better in my mind's eye than it did on the screen.
My brain doesn't work that way any more, for some reason. I think I'm too lazy to picture things. :) I'd rather watch fiction these days than read it, and I'd rather read nonfiction than watch it. My brain's done a total reversal.
So I can definitely understand why some would rather read than watch. I'm envious, too, because the recaps are a lot faster to read!
