Doña Bárbara - Tues., Sept. 9 El Concurso de los Flores

Over on TW, they are saying that this little girl, dressed as a ladybug, who led the contestants onto the stage is Edith Gonzalez's daughter, Constanza, aged 4. This was the best pic I could get because she was only on for a few seconds and was moving all the time. A cutie, though.

This was a fun episode. I love the jazzy trumpet music they use for silly scenes. Once again, Cecilia let Antonio kiss her then slaps him and says she hates him but he doesn't believe it.

Santos can't stop thinking about DB and she about him.

Mauricio gives deportment training to Marisela and the terneras.

Cecilia is taken aback when she brings drinks to the workers on the school and finds Antonio shirtless. He and the other workers are much amused.

DB drops in at Altamira unexpectedly when the girls are getting ready to go to the Fiesta. Everybody's horrified reaction as they see her when they come down the stairs was very funny.

Mauricio puts the finishing touches on Marisela's 'margarita' or daisy costume.

Federica gets tepid applause for her appearance. The whole way Mauricio stage managed the contest was wonderful. Mauricio tells Mujiquita that voting for the queen of the flowers will be on the american system - democratic, direct and secret. Pernalete is furious but he can't do anything.

DB hatches a very elaborate plot to get rid of Orestes involving blow guns and poisoned thorns. I don't know very much about snakes but that is some powerful venom if a mere prick with a thorn dipped in venom can cause someone to collapse immediately. They were using rattlesnake noises when DB was catching and milking the snakes but as far as I can tell, rattlesnakes are desert creatures probably not found in the Llanos. I'm sure there are other venomous snakes in Venezuela. It is probably like using the scream of a Red-tailed Hawk for every raptor. In this case, poisonous snake = rattle. [I was wrong about this. See below for Pascal's correction.]

Marisela's appearance in the beauty contest gets wild applause from the audience. She was moving so much I couldn't get a good picture.

DB tells Eustaquia that she has to kill Orestes because he called her a thief in public. Everything she has done is based on fear. She can't back down ['flaquear'] on this or everything that is DB and El Miedo will collapse.

Antonio and Santos have a miscommunication about who Antonio is in love with. Santos thinks Antonio is talking about Luisana. Then Lorenzo sees Cecilia and Antonio kissing so he's probably headed back to the bottle.

Yes, a very entertaining episode all the way around. I didn't get what they were going to do until I saw Melquiades with the tube. When they were talking about him never missing, I thought they meant with a pistol. Too bad they had to upstage Marisela's hour in the sun. I still think she'll win and Pernalete and his awful daughter will explode with rage.

I thought the scene where DB talks with Eustachia was very well written and acted. She said something about fear being in her bones, I think, feeling it and causing it. My interpretation is that she knows she's risking losing Santos but is unable to help herself because of what happened in her past. She can't show any weakness or she believes she'd be as helpless as she was at the hands of the rapists as a very young woman.

My only criticism so far is the unrelenting meanness of Luisana. Usually the scheming women try to be sweet around the galanes and backstabbing in a more secretive way. She mistreats the people in his house right in front of him. One wonders why Santos doesn't just boot her out of there; all she does is cause chaos.

Thanks Jean, as always, for posting your pictures and comments.

For what it is worth, rattlesnakes aren't only found in the desert. I have them near where I live, which is a rainy, green area. Here is info about the South American version:

Thanks for the snake info, Pascal. That wikipedia article says that the South American rattlesnakes have more neurotoxins in their venon that the northern species so maybe it was not that far fetched that Orestes would just keel over from the thorn.

I also liked the scene with DB and Estachia. DB is trapped by her past and she knows it. It make her a more interesting villain.

Thanks to Jean for the wonderful pictures. Constanza is especially preciosa. What a cutey. And Pascal thanks for the WikiSnake article. How frightening. I usually love looking at snakes but this one makes me nervous just seeing it on the web. What wonderful things we learn about on this blog.

Loved the episode and agree that Luisana is a paperdoll figure. She could be more subtle and much more interesting. DB is very interesting as her internal conflicts come out. Santos is sexy even in his confused looking state which he slips into frequently. This TN is great fun.

Jean, here is the previous text from my cache, if that helps:

DB will not be on tonight!

Thanks for your fabu shots and comments Jean, and thanks to Pascal for re-posting them. I hadn't had a chance to look at this one until now, so I would have totally missed it.

Glad Jean cleared out who the little girl was. For a moment (she really wasn't on screen for very long) I thought it was the same actress that played Juan David in PdG, but got such a quick glimpse I couldn't be sure.

Call me petty, but Luisana simply hasn't been covered in enough crud just yet. She is so demeaning to everyone around her (except Santos, and sometimes even him) that she needs a regular slice of humble pie, lest we all start fantasizing about her painful demise...

The "proximo capitulo" voice over said Orestes was struggling between life and death. Wonder if this means there's a chance he'll survive. Will Santos forgive DB if her plans to kill the lad fail? Guess we'll know tomorrow ;)

Thanks Pascal for helping me out again. I restored the text to the post.

Thanks to all, it was a fun episode, except for the snake. Yikes, I thought I was safe from them because I don't live in the desert.

I'm surprised at Santos and his weakness for women. He should be able to nicely escort Luisana out the door after how she's treated everyone. But, then Maurice would leave and I'm enjoying him. Also, it gives DB another target and so Marisela has some relief.

DB doesn't seem to be 'trying' to be nice. I mean how hard is it to not kill people when they insult you? She's lucky to have Eustachia there, who's giving good advice and pointing it out before DB takes action. She doesn't love Santos, she wants to 'own' him.

Oh, and I think Santos definately has the hots for Marisela. IMO He's just trying to be respectful and not fully aware of how much he cares for her...
