MEPS - Thursday, April 23, 2009, Cap. 48 - Three Funerals and a Wedding
At last Lili, Fernanda, Damian and Martina arrive at the Elizalde hacienda. She is filled with shock and awe. So is Gonzo when he walks into the room. He embraces Lili who has a crazy look in her eyes. He tells her how pretty she is. In walks Barbara. Lili’s fear of her is palpable. Gonzo, the dense, says, my love – don’t you remember Barbara, my wife. You were asking about her. Lili blurts out “la hiena,” and that Ed said he’d boot Barbara’s butt out of the hacienda. All look shocked.
Ed is explaining the situation to Martina and Jacinto. She says he’s learned a way with words, but he says it’s always been the same. The phone rings. It’s Dr. Demented.
At the Elizalde’s, Fernanda explains to the esteemed family group that Lili is a bit obsessed with Ed. Barb wants to know if she’s told Lili that Ed’s dead. Fer intended to do it, but not yet. Gonzo says maybe it would be a good idea to wait. But Lili wants confirmation that Ed is going to get rid of the Hiena.
Ed tells Dr. O that he wants a full report about everything that goes on with the Elizalde’s Dr. O takes a swig from his flask and says, Mr. Ghost, we’ll see. He promptly calls Barb. Barb lies and says it’s a call from the plant and leaves the room. Barb wants to know why the crazy one is in her house. He says he couldn’t stop it. She says that Lili better get back in the manicomio. If Dr.O thinks he’s going to get any slack from BOW, he’s mistaken. She threatens him. What else do I need to know, she says. He says that he’s acting under pressure. He was going to tell her that he’s being forced to disobey her.
At Grupo Lactos Anibal is having a fit with Flor. He’s put out that Barb and Franco are planning lunch. He tells her to get the hacienda on the line.
Barb reminds Dr. O of his obligation to her. He doesn’t want to tell her by phone. She says it better be important. Maybe at her house. She hangs up and is out of control.
Anibal demands to know why Barb is meeting with Franco without his knowledge. She says she’ll meet with him at his pleasure. She’s losing it now.
Ed continues talking to Margarita. He says don’t you remember what my mother said before she died about Lili being in danger. Jacinto repeats that Lili was put in the asylum to hide something. Margarita agrees but asks Ed to slow down his plans that one day there will be justice not vengeance. She’s confused. Ed says to rescue Lili is vengeance. She says now she agrees with him and asks forgiveness for judging him and doubting. He forgives her. Sole wanted him to save Lili.
Back at the hacienda, Lili is playing paint the face on Fernanda. Gonzo and Martina think it’s really funny to see lipstick on Fer’s teeth. To spoil the fun, in walks Barb who has to speak to Gonzo in private about something urgent.
Lili keeps referring to Barb as “la hiena” and Fer asks her to stop doing that. They giggle and Damian let’s us all see his “painful smile” look.
Santiago and Aurora still discuss her situation. They know she was born the 20th of October and are now at the civil registry.
Barb says that they put Lili at risk by taking her to the hacienda. She sets Gonzo up by telling him about Lili’s attacks and that they are dangerous. She says Dr. O wants Lili returned to the clinic. She says she’s going to the clinic to talk to Dr. O in order to find out how to treat Lili if she should have an attack. Of course Barb tells Gonzo she’s doing all this for love and by the way, don’t forget I’m having lunch with Franco Santoro tomorrow.
Santiago and Aurora plan their strategy. Aurora is troubled because they can’t find anything out about her birth and he’s telling everybody that they’re going to get married. Ever the flower child optimist – he’s ready to go through endless records to find their future and her past.
Gonzo is annoyed that his wife is going to meet “that man.” Barb says it’s necessary for the business because if Power Milk is going to partner with them, they need to know what’s going on. She says she knows what she’s doing. And, she’s going to be sure that nothing bad happens to Lili.
Dr. O paces in his office when Adolfina comes in followed by Ciro’s wife and son, Simple Simon.
Aurora continues her conversations with Santiago about what’s going to happen if they can’t find her birth registry (she used the word “datos” or information.) Don’t worry, says Santiago it doesn’t cost anything to look. She asks that if they can’t find anything about her, he’s going to return to the hacienda. Just then he finds something. Aurora Artemisa was born and October 20 1985 in the DF and registered here by Dominga.
Mrs. Ciro wants Ciro’s effects. At first Dr. O is confused, then he realizes what she’s asking for and says, of course, they’re in the warehouse. Then she specifically asks if he knows anything about patents? Dr. O says Ciro never talked about patents to him. Dr. O pulls out the death certificate and Mrs. Ciro and Simon leave.
Aurora can’t believe that he found it. Who were my parents – your mother was called Rebeca Sanchez Fruto. Who’s surprised out there? Just to drive home the point we see Barb’s face and then Aurora’s face and then, well, you know what. Once again, gentle readers, hang on to your brains (if I may quote a recent article in Time magazine) because the zombies are marching. Put on your beanies and let it all go.
Jacinto is exercising Saleroso when who should appear but Camilo who orders him to get down off the horse because he can’t stand it when servants are above him. He laughs his crazy laugh. I want to smack him.
Aurora tells Santiago that Dominga is a very cruel woman. He tells her to calm down. He thinks he’s going to get info out of Domingo. He says money talks. She doesn’t want him to feel obligated on her part. He knocks at the door and tells Domingo that it’s her son-in-law. He brought a big bottle of spirits which sends Dominga into ecstasy.
Damian enters the bedroom where Fer is fixing her makeup. He apologizes. She says why -for leaving me in the morning or alone at the clinic. He says it’s tension and that it’s not what she thinks. She gives him a lecture about feelings. He agrees – and she says let’s have a truce and promise each other that if we have a problem we won’t offend each other. He kisses her hand and starts to get busy. She appears to respond to him (I think). But, ever the wet blanket Fer says she has to leave because Lili is waiting for her. He won’t take no for an answer and tells her she’s going to get up happy and smiling. So who hasn’t heard that one.
At last they get to the bed and Damian slowly starts to remove Fer’s clothes. She looks amused. He says I am going to fill you with tenderness. The ghost of Eduardo past visits the bedroom and Fer looks terrified. She gets up and looks around. Dam wants to know what’s going on.
Dr. O (still wearing a black ribbon on his sleeve) is met by Freduardo. Ed is glad Dr.O is nervous. Did you call the hacienda, he says. Dr. O lies and tells Ed that he couldn’t get anyone there. Ed wants Dr. O to get Lili back at the clinic. Just this once he and Barb are in agreement. Ed sees Barb. (We hear suspenseful music.) Break. Thank God ‘cause I’ve been holding my breath.
Back at hacienda Elizalde, Damian is really annoyed. He wants to know what happened. Fer says she felt that someone had entered the room but it was only her imagination. She flashes back to her conversation with Prissy – and the gift Prissy gave her. She picks it up and remembers that the gift was to liberate her from the bad and that Fer wouldn’t understand that now. Prissy tells her to guard it carefully so that nothing bad will happen.
Fer asks Damian to forgive her and once again pulls out the sad card and asks for more patience. Damian explains to her that he’s a man of flesh and blood and that if she didn’t intend to consummate their marriage she shouldn’t have married him. He doesn’t know how much longer he’s going to put up with this stuff. She says soon. Since Barb has his arm twisted behind his back, once again he’s willing to forgive her. But at some point Fer is going to have to put out or shut up, maybe both. He didn’t say that. I just had a feeling that’s what he meant.
Dam and Fer begin kissing again. He’s frustrated to have cancelled their honeymoon again. Damian says he loves her very much and wants to cover her with kisses. He just might mean it. But since he sleeps with a hyena and lives with wolves, what’s a girl to think?
Dr. O is trying to explain his troubles to Barb. She only wants him to explain what he meant when he spoke to her by phone, e.g., who is forcing you? Ed has his ear to the door and can hear everything. Dr. O waffles – she’s waiting. He wants her to take it calmly. Dr. O says Eduardo Juarez. Barb looks cool; Ed looks shrewd.
Dominga finishes off a glass of something alcoholic. For purposes of discussion, let’s say she has just finished sipping a glass of Port wine. That sounds good. Dominga can’t hold her liquor. She is celebrating. They’re going to be rich. She burps. Dominga can’t understand why he wants to marry such a stupid girl as Aurora. He says he loves Aurora very much and that she’s the best girl in the world. Santi still wants to know how Aurora got there – did you bring her here, Dominga. Dominga mocks him. Santiago says she has to live up to her part of the bargain – who are Aurorar’s parents because she’s the only one who knows.
Barb asks Dr. O what else did Eduardo Juarez tell you. Dr. O says that Ed told him that if Lili didn’t return to the house he’d kill him with his own hands. Barb says when – a few days ago and that Ed’s been watching him. She presses him for more information. Ever the simpering fawn, Dr. O says Ed hasn’t returned to give him more orders.
She says don’t you know Ed is dead. She saw his tomb. He committed suicide. Ed considers this a victory.
Damian is trying to make love or something to Fernanda who reminds him that he should be at the office. There is a persistent knock at the door. Damian says, damn it. I know he’d like to say that. Fer says – wait a minute. More knocking. She can’t ignore it. It’s Lili. Lili says Barbara? Not here – Damian wants to know why she wants Barb. Lili keeps asking about Barb. Fer tells her to go on and that she’ll be right there. Lili watches Fer put on her jacket.
Dominga once again mocks Santiago and says what do I get out of this if I tell you something about Rebeca Sanchez. He says she’ll get a son in law who will take care of her. She says she needs enough money to live like a queen. He offers her that if she’ll tell them. She doubts he can complete the promise. She needs “hechos.” She says she doesn’t really trust him, but he promises her the money. Santiago says just tell me how much. Finally, she accepts. She’ll get rid of Aurora who’s a problem and that she’ll have money. She says show me the money and I’ll tell you about Rebeca Sanchez.
Barb tells Dr. O that with Ed’s death they are rid of a problem. He agrees. But, something is yet to be done – what, he asks- Lili, she says, Liliana Elizalde. Dr. O grabs his chest. He’s having a panic attack. Looks like she’s ordering a hit, and Dr. O is the hit man.
Meanwhile Camilo is menacing Jacinto. He rides the horse around Jacinto, knocking him down. Camilo says you stupid ladino Indian, agree that you’ll report to me everything that goes on about Franco Santoro, like how did one of Jairo’s girls end up working here. Jacinto claims that he only knows about the horse. Camilo wants to know who else lives there – nobody says Jacinto. Perfect, says Camilo, you’re going to help me find out who Franco Santoro really is.
Santiago continues the bargaining with Dominga. The only thing we need, he says, is your consent. The wedding is going to be tomorrow. She’s ready to split, but he says you’re going to be the madrina. She laughs. She’s really into it. He says, I’ll complete my part, you complete yours. She tells him she has to go pee. In fact, she tells him that twice. Aurora asks him if he thinks Dominga will really do it. He teases her a little bit and she says get serious. She’s worried about getting married. Santi leaves to get wedding stuff.
Jacinto actually answers Camilo back. Jacinto tells Camilo you don’t know what you’re dealing with here. Camilo, the sneaky snake, isn’t going to be stopped. So, who invited him to this party? Camilo then raises his riding crop to take another shot at Jacinto when a bucket of water falls on him. Suddenly Gardenia appears and tells Camilo that she works here now and she’s not afraid of him. You go, girl.
Avances: Vlad calls Damian and tells him he’s going to be a father, the father of Prissy’s baby.
Lilly sees a photo of Ed and Fer tells her he’s Franco Santoro, their father’s friend.
Ed finds Silvestre bleeding and beaten up.
Damian tells Pris they need to talk.
Barb threatens Lili with a pillow and tells her she’s dead.

Those of you,(and you know who you are), who wanted to toss Gardenia overboard, like to reconsider?
Carlos
Wasn't it marvelous how Lili keeps calling Babs La Hiena? Guess she can get away with it because she's "crazy".
Go Gardenia! I like how Fr/Ed is surrounding himself with a team of awesomely hot, tough mamas.
Thanks Pasofino!
A couple of technical questions.
I have my recorder set to record MEPS from 8 (central) to 9:03. This has always worked in the past.
Last night, at 9:03, the recordng stopped before the show was over.
The show apparently really stopped about 9:05.
Did anyone else lose about 2 minutes at the end?? I have changed my recorder to go to 9:05 for now.
BTW, I read somewhere that this practive of shows starting and ending at 3 minutes past the hour was initiated by Ted Turner with his Atlanta Superstation years ago. It was an attempt to keep viewers watching one show from jumping to another network. And, also allowed other network viewers 3 minutes to change their minds and go back to the Atlanta Superstation show.
*******************
While I'm on a techie subject - does anyone know if Televisa already uses HD cameras to shoot their telenovelas with and we simply don't get them here in the states - or is there a time when Televisa is going to switch telenovelas to HD?? I'd think they'd want to as soon as possible, because of future DVD sales and future re-castings of the shows.
Silverfox
Oh Noes Babs and Aurora are mother and daughter! My god, she will be Santiago's wife and stepsister. Que Horror!
Lol @ Lil putting lipstick on Fernanda making her look like Quintina.
Camilo getting doused with water by Gardenia is another classic. Dude got owned. I would really like to see her beat the crap out of him. I can't believe Jacinto is so meek and mild. And he even tried to stop her. Looks like those two are having role reversals. Gardenia is a lot tougher than Jacinto. That was my favorite scene there. Jacinto should tell Franco about those senaky visits so that he can straighten out Camilo.
Ibarramedia
So, Babs is Aurora's momma afterall, I realy thought that they were going to drag that out for a while, and give us a twist. Doming is such a piece of work, reminds me a woman that my older brother married, in too many ways.
HOORAAY for Gardenia! My spunky gal is standing up the the spoiled asshat! I sure hope that she blabs to Eddy about the incident, as I doubt that Jacinto will. Too bad that Jacinto didn't tell Eddy that Asshat had ordered hime to spy on Eddy (he didn't, did he?), they could have fed him some bad info. In my perfect script, Jacinto is going to take care of Asshat himself, and it's gonna feel soo good.
Curious- I did not get the avances that Pasofino reported. No bleeding Sivestre, no revelation from Lili to Fer...
Silver Fox I have the same problem. I set mine for 15 minutes after to be sure I don't miss anything and last night it shut off a little after 9.
I stood up and applauded when Gardenia splashed Cadmilho with the water. I was shouting, "Hit him with the bucket, hit him with the bucket." My dog was looking at me like I'd lost my mind. I think Jacinto should have stayed on the horse and knocked him over.
Now I'll print and take on my coffee break the juicy recap. Thank you Pasofino.
BTW, I howled with laughter at dr.Obi's 'havin' the big one'. He's good. So funny.
Hope Jacinto catches on to what just was revealed, which was Cad only picks on who he sees as victims. Stand up to him and he's a coward.
Ibarramedia
"Porque si pierdes la contacto con ella, entonces, se te va hacer más difícil averiguar el secreto..."
Good ear.
Carlos
Aurora Artemia!?! As in Artemia Bravo? Whoa! Beanie is firmly placed on my head, with chinstrap in place.
BTW - did we know Babs' other name is Rebecca Sanchez? (i forget)
WHY does Jacinto have to obey Camilo if he doesn’t even work for the Elizaldes anymore. What does he have on Jacinto, that Jac is taking this treatment? Is this a holdover to the classes and more of a cultural thing in LATAM? I get really angry when I see Cad treating Jac that way.
Sounds like Gardenia finally made herself useful. BuaHahahahaaaa....
Poor Damian, telling Fer to “fish or cut bait.” Can’t blame a new husband.
Silverfox - I don't think Telerisa is using HD cameras yet. Their novelas aren't as sharply defined as the Telemundo ones. The reception is pretty darned good on the DVR we rent from our cable provider, and quite terrible (LD for low def) on the other HD TVs in our house that don't have the digital receiver box, just cable-to-TV only.
I haven't figured that one out yet. Probably never will.
I always set my VCR to record for 1 hr 15 min, just to be sure I catch it all. I've noticed American TV stations doing the same thing---Grey's Anatomy and other shows will run a minute or two into the next hour, and we've lost some good stuff on the DVR. Now we program the DVR to record a few minutes beyond.
Agree with everyone. Three cheers for Gardenia!! Yep, stand up to Cadman. I'm just hoping Fr/Ed will be there one of these times when he shows up and tells him to get the h... out of there.
Watching Damian and Nanda, I was saying, someone please save her, someone needs to save her! Then, she was saved by the Ghost of Christmas Past (young Ed) and the Ghost of Christmas Present (Lili). Great job!
JeffMN
Carlos
Another reason it appeared to go long was that there was an extra long repeat session at the beginning of this one. Longer than usual. It was more than 10 after before they started new stuff. With the repeat start they always have, you really won't miss anything at the end anyway. You can catch it the next day. :-)
JeffMN
Methinks before this is over, Prissy should have saved that for herself, she is going to need it.
JeffMN
Loved Damian's look the first time Lili said La Hyena, very funny. Poor guy, nothing kills the mood like ghost of childhood boyfriend.
Okay, why on earth do they have a picture in a photo album of Franco Stantoro? That made no sense.
So I am guessing since Gepetto is wounded, Martina leaves Lili which allows Babs to attack. Poor Lili, maybe if she fights back that will be what sends her back to the hospital. And I love the Doc, he is cracky me up. Comic relief that works and is NOT Quintina!
SilverFox, I generally set mine for 4 minutes after the hour and I to missed the end. Had to youtube it. ABC always over runs their shows also. Trying to stop us channel surfers.
Carlos- my original question on the issue was why did they intentionally cause Esteve to make such an error in grammar? To show that he is not a native speaker, ala meester JAmes? At least Esteve has a believeable second language accent.
Doris, yes, Babs' real name is Rebeca Sanchez, revealed the first episode, in meeting with Cigarman. He always calles her "Rebeca", and that is the namme on her Cayman Islands bank account with all the Elizalde's pesos.
my word verification is "beervats" And with that- off to hang a Dutch door. TGIF!
I'm missing Damian's point. Why the urgency. It can't be need for sex, he's got that. It can't be legal consumation for a divorce set-up, 'cause the Elizades are broke. It can't be obeying Barb's order, 'cause all he has to do is tell a lie. And it can't be love, because he thinks he will leave town with Barb. So what's his motivation?!
I didn't get those avances either.
A repurcussion of this behavior, and also where the US networks are now listing some shows as ending 1 and 2 minutes after the hour - is that it "blocks" one of the two shows I can record in the next hour. (TW has a limit of recording two shows at a time.)
BTW, for you Time Warner cable users, you can see when this happens. When you hit the button to show the list of recordings, you will notice there "tabs" along the bottom. You can navigate to those tabs by the right arrow to the right of the "Select" button.
One of those tabs is "Conflicts". It is here where you can see the unintended consequences of thinking you will be recording something, but it doesn't take. It is often (for me) because of one of these shows ending 1 minute after the hour.
BTW, the American shows do this automatically because the times are programmed into the TW internal TV Guide. The Mexican ones are not in the internal TV Guide, so we have to manually override them.
Anyway, you can imagine that 10 years from now, we will be bragging about all the troubles we used to have to put up with our TV sets and recording "back in 2009". ha.
The Fox over and out here.....
Liked Fernanda's sexy combo of black bustier or what ever under the sexy part see through white shirt. She is so lovely but Pasofino, I too think it is hard to tell how much she enjoys the Damian fondling. She acts like she is just doing obligatory responding, not really hot surrender.
I have been looking into the use of ladino in Mexico. We discussed it last week in a class on the nomadic tribes meet the pueblo peoples meet the Spanish conquistadors in New Mex. According to Professor Trujillo in this class, the ladino in the Americas was used to describe an indian or indigenous person who takes on the life style and persona of a Spanish person but does not share the blood. So Camilho is using it as an insult which seems his only way to talk to people he wants to feel superior to. As you probably know, Ladino in Spain more often referred to the Sephardic Jews that were productive enlightened members of society until Isabel ran them all out with the Moors in 1492 and beyond.
Cap'n Sylvia: Thanks.
Iba: I'd like to see anybody geat the crap out of Camilo.
Silverfox and Dave: I actually had to recap from my DVR last night since I wasn't home for the original broadcast. My DVR didn't record the last part of MEPS last night for some strange reason. So, I recapped the last part from YouTube. This may explain nothing.
Everyone: Thanks for the comments.
Barbara from Pembroke
DVD's particularly with English/Spanish audit and English/Spanish subtitles. I watch almost all of my netFlix English audio with Spanish subtitles first. If I really like the movie, I'll play it back with Spanish audio - and maybe no subtitles, or English or Spanish subtitles, depending on how I feel.
I keep Spanish vocabulary recorded in spiral notebooks like I used to use in College. Then, keep coming back to them to refresh.
Sometimes, I turn audio off, show subtitles only and "talk" along with the subtitles. I think pronouncing the words out loud helps with comprehension.
I also use books that have the English on the left and Spanish on the right side of the page. It is very easy to glance to the left to see what was just said. or read all of one paragraph in Spanish, then cruise the English on the left to see if you missed anything - or to understand some idiomatic expression. I have several of these from Borders and Barnes & Noble.
Also, most good books can be purchased in Spanish - either at Borders or Amazon. For example, I have one of Harry Potter's books - one copy in Spanish and one in English. BTW, when you do this, try to buy a children's or teenager's book to start. Even Harry Potter is a challenge - it's level sure seems above a "child" level.
Another technique is to read the news of the day in Spanish. Many Spanish newspapers/magazines are on the web - People, Vanidades, Cosmopolitan - also the LA newspaper La Opinion. These are good, because you can do "one-a-day" since the news articles are so short. The magazine articles may be longer. Also, these articles may be on current topics you really want to read about anyway - and learning Spanish at the same time is a bonus.
For whatever it's worth, the Fox is over and out..
I loved it when Barb was so frustrated with Dr. O that her hand shook!
I can understand why Damian wants sex with Fernanda. She's very sexy, but virginal (unlike Babs). Damian wants the conquest.
I'm really enjoying this show. Can't wait for more fireworks tonight!
I echo everyone who commented that the Cad/Jacinto scenes are nauseating. Jacinto is so traumatized, he can do nothing but tremble when Cad is near. Blech. Thank God for Gardenia! She and Martina are the best.
I saw MA last night and was totally horrified. I don't think I could watch again. Diana in MA
I think i'm one of the first if not the first to really notice Gardenia especially when she has her hair down and not in a braid while wearing her maids uniform.
Hombre is right in that Damian wants the conquest, plus it's a control issue too. Besides if you are married to a fine young woman like Fernanda, you would want to jump her bones. Translate that literally and non english speakers will say why did he jump her bones? LMAO. :)
Gardenia is my girl of the week. We should have her picture to hang on a wall.
Ibarramedia
I guess that's the new trend.
Anyway, I love Harper's Island - it is also a soap opera, with all kinds of subplots all over the place - with the overall mystery - who is the murderer - lurking over all the subplots.
The Fox....
I was hoping Jacinto would tell Fr/Ed about Cad so they could feed him bogus info. I'm still hopeful Gardenia will spill the beans and they will do that. But it has to be awful and emasculating for poor Jacinto to feel that kind of fear about that jerk!
Didn't Jacinto discuss with Margarita and Gardenia how they would have to leave the region if they angered the Elizades?
I see what you are all saying about the untranlatable idioms. Thank you.
I was sort of surprised by the avances in that Babs is running a risk letting the mask drop and threatening Lili.
Regarding the speculation if Aurora is daughter of Artemio, I heard her second name as Artemisia instead of Artemia. But maybe I heard wrong.
I did watch Mujeres Asesinas and was amazed at the graphic violence. It made me think of Sandra Cisneros, a writer I like a lot, who references something called ¡Alarma! magazine in her short stories. From context I gathered that this is the Mexican version of the really old police story type magazines from the 50s that specialized in lots of pictures of hacked up corpses and crimes of passion.
CherylNMex: You're always a great source of info. Thanks.
Watching the previews, didn't look good for Lili. Martina needs to show up and save the day.
JeffMN
Camilo is just an A-Hole plain and simple. He would do that to anybody's horse, not just Franco's. The pathetic guy is just jealous and wants to ride Saleroso any time he can sneak a ride.
Almost like an annoying cousin who tries to get a ride at someone's luxury cars.
Ibarramedia
I can't wait for the following -
*Jacinto to stop being a wuss. Just punch Camilo in the face already. His family knows he's a jerk, he probably won't even get in trouble.
*Aurora to quit being such a whiner pain in the butt. Santiago is going out of his way to help help help and all she keeps wanting to do is go lock herself up again at the hell house.
*Damian to finally lose his patience completely and have an epic tantrum. We saw glimpses when he threw a suitcase in the car, but I know he is capable of so much more.
*Fernanda to some day ever follow through on getting into bed with someone, but just because I think she's totally hot and I want to see her a little more undressed.
Carlos
Do I understand that Camilo asked Jacinto about one of Jairo's women working for Franco? So that means he did recognize Martina - not necessarily as a neighbor from his childhood, but it means he'll also recognize her as Lili's nurse, if he can be bothered to spend enough time around the family to notice.
Then she'll have to stab him. Oh well.
RE: why Barb wants Damian to consummate: because once they consummate, Fernanda won't be able to annul her marriage. She can divorce and remarry civilly, but not in the church. That would break her heart.
They would not get the context of it....
Ibarramedia
And the other thing that surprised me was that Cad was smart enough that when he saw Martina the other day that Martina was one of Jairo's girls. Since he recognized her as such then, what will he think when he ends up figuring out she is Lili's nurse?
Artemio checking up on Franco may be a problem, but shouldn't be much of a problem with Cad trying to figure something out. Jacinto has to tell Fr/Ed about being asked to be a spy for Cad. They should be able to then use that to their advantage feeding Cad a bunch of horse... manure.
JeffMN
I didn't finish all the comments, but did anyone notice Aurora's middle name ARTEMISA. I think we have another clue here, Artemio Bravo, el padre, maybe?
I noticed Santiago & Dominga have the same hair style, his is just curlier.
"se me pega la gana"
anyone know the meaning of this? It must be a Mexican saying, my Cuban Spanish teacher had never heard it. Damian said it to Barbi when he was throwing things in the suitcase. I caught estoy & locas, but nothing else.
Gardenia yelled it at Camilo after throwing the water on him & after she said she wasn't afraid of him, but got nothing else out of it.
Tener ganas de is to feel like doing something & this is probably something similar, but maybe something stronger.
Carlos, nice pic of BB!
"Then she'll have to stab him. Oh well."
Gonzo has a picture of Eduardo, Soledad & Fernanda on his desk at home. The same picture that Fer has in her bedroom.
Sorry folks, i just can't let go of it. It's driving me nuts. Why can't they just use some generic old peoples pictures unless that has something to do with this story.
Ibarramedia
Carlos
Connie, that one really had me stumped! Why on earth would they have a picture of Franco Santoro in a photo album. That is just BSC and should send the guy running from the place. And where on earth did they get it? It doesn't look like he was in the suit he wore to the wedding. I could kind of maybe see if the photographer had been snapping pictures at the wedding and so was getting shots of all the guests.
Julie: The amulet that Prissy gave Fer is in the shape of a small, clear, pyramid.
But what could it have been when Gardenia was screaming it at Cadmilo, unless it was something like "I really feel like smashing your head with this bucket"?
I don't mean just leavce the frames with the fake pictures in there. They could have hired some random extra to pretend they were the ancestors. What's striking is the Anibal ancestor looks exactly like him but with a mustache and wearing those hermano reyes type of rooster shirts. Almost like he is a Zapatista. I would freak if they have an episode with all of them having ancestors that look like them. Jag did a special episode like that years ago.
I can offer a theory about Franco in the photo album from my experience. Since 1993, i started really paying attention to pictures. I had my old camera and started taking pictures. Not just being photographed by friends and relatives. So I made my own photo albums of special events and family gatherings, friends, etc over the years. I would buy those 3 ring bindr types that you could keep adding extra pages that you buy at the store. It looks like a 5 inch binder of NFL playbooks. (Don't ask why i have those) Anyway when there was an event say a wedding. I would use up the film in the camera. The next day bring it to the one hour place then fill up the album. Nowadays with digital cameras, it is even faster. I just upload it to my harddrive if my SD card is full then photobucket them as back up and to post in email, msg boards, etc. tjios is the only place where I can't post pictures. It does not let me.
what is the point of what I explained? At Fernanda's wedding they took some random pictures. There are also meetings with Franco that they might have taken pictures off camera. I mean we don't always see them in the bathroom taking care of business. You know #1 or #2. Too much info.

In the adult ed ESL conversation classes I teach, I help them learn all the slang they can but caution them to never use it because they might get the context or timing wrong.
I remember in class once, a Latino woman was talking (in English) about her and her partner (compañera). I was pretty sure she meant her female friend/buddy/whatever but explained that in this country, 'partner' meant either a business partner or she was gay. Her eyes got big as saucers and her jaw dropped to the table, with the 'gay' thing. LOL She learned to say 'friend.'
Ibarramedia, I have a girlfriend who leaves the people in the frames when she gets one and hasn't decided what to put in it yet, like its given as a gift. People are always looking at her mantel asking who people are and she says "I have no idea, they came with the frame" and people think she is kidding, but she isn't. She just likes having her mantel full. So when you brought it up it made me think of her crazy little game. I have learned not to ask when I see a new frame in the house.
Iba: Good observation about the amulet. On my little TV I could just barely make out what Fer was picking up and that it had a point on one end.
No lo hizo porque no se le pegó la gana (Méx)
He didn’t do it because he didn’t feel like it / he couldn’t be bothered.

On the other hand, fraudulent intent (when the wedding is performed, not afterwards) IS grounds for annulment. Like if someone planned to marry you so they could steal your money and then take off.
However, that one never seems to come up in telenovelas, maybe because it's virtually impossible to prove intent. They can claim that they married you in good faith and then later decided to swindle you. This, sadly, is NOT grounds for annulment.
I still think that this is exactly what Babs had in mind for Fernanda: consummate the marriage and then she's stuck with it. After all, Babs also encouraged Aniballs to marry Pris (I think this was only mentioned in passing) and was hoping that Camilo would marry Erika rather than a girl he liked. She wanted them all to have miserable marriages. (I guess Santi was spared since he spent so much time away from home.)
A civil annulment nullifies/voids your civil marriage (not your religious marital status, obviously), while a divorce recognizes your civil marriage by dissolving it.
I'm not sure what's the benefit of getting a civil annulment rather than a divorce, but there must be some.
In any case, only a Church annulment will help Fernanda if she consummates (which I don't think will happen anyway). Oh, unless Damian dies. Widows can remarry in the Church.
I don't know if she can wear it around her neck (sounds like she can't), but she might want to start wearing things with pockets.
And hopefully Pris has a whole bag of those things, because she should really be handing them out.
I found another good site while looking for Mexican slang

I don't like how Gonzalo talks to Liliana as if she was slow. She may have been placed in the manicomio under the impression that she had a nervous breakdown and was traumatized plus the alleged drug use. But that does not mean she is retarded... What a terrible father.

This person made up english subtitles for selected episodes and scenes. I wish subtitles were done for the whole series but that might be asking too much like having someone recap an entire series.

Me pega la gana = the urge strikes me. Also tengo las ganas and a bunch of other constructions. Just about any time you see "gana" or "ganas" used as a noun, it's an urge, craving, etc. (As a verb, ganar/ganarse is earn or win, hence the confusion.)
It took me a while to figure that out, but not nearly as long as it took me to figure out the many, many uses of "cuenta" (especially "me da cuenta"="I realized"; I mistakenly thought it meant "he told me"!) during LFMB. I didn't know about wordreference or reverso yet, and my dictionary didn't do justice to the word.
Cheers to Gardenia for backing up her mouth with some much-needed action. Cadmilho is indeed a hateful asshat.
