MEPS Wed. 29 April - Cap 52 - Having Lots of Balls...In the Air

Lili is in meltdown, she repeats that she killed her mother and now it will be her fault that her father will die, so she has to get help to die instead in order to save him, Gepetto is confused but surviving and luckily doesn't quite recognize Franco Santoro, Barb is preening for her lunch, Anibal is jealous because Dad thinks more of Barb's executive acumen than Anibal's, Aurora isn't rushing into a marriage with a stranger, and

Santi agrees that the only reason to marry is for love. He is happy to wait until Aurora and he can really marry for love, but Dominica is going to be plenty po'd when she finds out she isn't likely to get the cushy retirement she was promised as the yellow-ribboned suegra (MIL) Wondering what made her so sad and gloomy (ponerse achipolado) Martina tries to pry out of Lili what Barbara did to scare her while she was left alone with her to go off on the ruse to find Damian.

Franco assures Gepetto that he has been in the States since he was a boy so he couldn't look familiar. Oh, oh, there is that ominous knock from Jairo Roca at the yellow submarine door, Jacinto looks his usual scared but a glimmer of glad that Franco is just in the other room putting Gepetto back in bed.

Santi tearfully tells of his first love at age 12 when his curls were really, really cute and he was in love. He has flashbacks of Fernanda's christening as he adds, I thought I would die for love of Erika, Aurora wonders, wasn't she the woman I met at your sister's wedding? I passed by her ranch every day wrote verses for her, and made drawings for her, but Erika treated me with indifference and fell in love with Camilo. He has hidden his feelings since and felt like no one would love him. He asks Aurora to come with him now. Aurora you are unique, you are an extraordinary being (we just can't see more than the physical beauty on a sourpuss face out here in Beanielandia) I never thought that you would exist here on the earth. She pouts, he turns and leaves, we leave her looking sad and tearful behind the gushing fountain. Her coldness makes her shared dna with Barbinator all the more believable.

Jairo forces the door open and says he is sure Jacinto is hiding the old man, he is going to tell me where Martina is. She has robbed him and he is going to get even. Franco quietly steps into the fray. Is this subject a friend of yours? this friend is a big bully (matón) I am talking with a big thug(hampón) who is a little bully (matoncito) As Jairo waves the fairly convincing looking gun, Franco dryly asks, think you are capable of using this toy (juguete)?

Vladi answers the door bell ringing, drunk as a skunk, it is Damian who looks down his nose at the messy apartment. as he clears crumbs, he asks why are you taking it out on (agarraste contra) the furniture. what were you doing with my sister-in- law (concuñada). what you are doing is too much. Vladi stumbles into a defense, she is the best, she is the only woman in my life. Are you going to end up on the street with this. Don't offend me and when did you have this woman in your arms. Listen to me, earth to astronaut Piniero, Piniero, When did she twist your arm. You and I have to make a deal (trato).

Jairo is more aggressive when hearing Franco say, Who is this? He swaggers, a cavalryman for justice (jinete justiciero), after we all roll our eyes at this hubris, our hero ends up saying, he is Franco Santoro. Jairo withdraws the gun and says sooner or later we will meet in the street and it will be another matter.

We can make some money here says ever practical Damian, that's a joke. Why are you sure that Pris is coming to look for me. She has changed lately, this transformation is the result of love. something has changed in side. Don't play with me says the flailing Vladi. Damian's idea is taking shape, we have some hard issues here (contundentes) She never would have become impregnated you under ordinary circumstances. Vladi starts to see that Damian is taking him seriously and maybe has a thought, clearly he can't think.

After Jairo leaves Jacinto and Margarita tell him about the scene he made when he came looking for Martina and all the damage. Franco thinks it is a good idea to keep Martina hidden at the asylum for her sake not just for Lili''s. Margarita points out that Jairo changed his tune when he heard the name of Franco Santoro. He is a brute and he is a betrayer.

Jacinto also tells about Camilho wanting to search Las Animas, (esculce) he wants to know more about your life. Franco smiles, when he enters the office I will have plant something for Camilo so he has a very good surprise.

Barbi primps for her lunch with cleavage and jewelry forming a pleasing focal point with the lowcut red dress. Power dressing at it's best.

She gets a phone call from Cigarman who demands to know whats going on with Franco. She wll have an answer in two hours after their meeting. he is having someone else gather (recabando) information on Franco. She wants to know who is searching but Cigarman Artemio doesn't want her to know. And forget about the priest just now, You might need to liquidate Franco.

Anilbal has systematically robbed his wife, declares Damian, warming to his subject with the possibility of a good smack down of his useless brother-in-law. Vladi is still reeling slowly but paying more attention as Damian gets to the point, But you can aid the woman of your dreams. You need to tell Priscila that her husband is robbing her. How can I do that. Damian hesitates with a warning, now listen, for no reason are you to tell her that I was here. I will tell you exactly what you need to know. - Break.

Gardenia in her efficient secretary mode, reads from her list the calls Franco has had, The young Camilo Eliszldte. called again, someone who did not identify themselves but said it was a matter of life and death needs to talk to you, Franco says calmly, get a name and I will call them back, and also Barbara Greco called to confirm your lunch meeting with her. Erika goes ballistic about why he would have lunch with the hyena who might do him harm. He thanks her and says he will keep it in mind and dials Steve as she swishes out of the room.

Steve I need your help. He quotes the lion and fox message we got last week to see if Steve knows anything and of course he knows immediately that it is from Machiavelli in his book, The Prince. Then what does Isaac Newton have to do with this. Not much, they lived in different centuries and different countries.

Jairo asks for his greasy black coated guest if he sees anything he likes, but finds out he is looking for Franco Santoro. He reveals he is or is using the name, Rene Manzanares, regarding Franco, Jairo senses some action but Rene dully says he is not and friend nor an enemy, he is just trying to find out about him. (I kept waiting for him to break into a medicine man dance and birng out feathers and beads ala FELS, but no, this man knows his role here).

At the glassed dining room at the Race track, Barbara is more than ready for the race. we hear classical flute music as Franco enters in impeccable dress. She smiles coquettishly, and leans in for a kiss, he turns away and politely seats her instead.

This place is Gonzalo's and mine, we only have people here we consider very important. He is honored, She orders a Martini extra dry and he says yea me too. He reviews in his mind, Babara Greco, my mother's killer and ....
She looks him over with glistening drool, they clink glasses and play sexy eye games. BREAK

Mudfight at the old corral and Jairo continues his rant about Santoro. He does favors that get people to like him. I want to look for my students (pupilas) and get even for a spoiled (malogro) bit of business. [I never noticed before that Jairo uses such flowery euphemisms for a lowlife].

The game of cat and mouse continues, the lunch advances to Señor Santoro... you can call me Franco it feels more comfortable.

I want to ask you for a very special favor. She explains that he will understand that Gonzo can't know anything about this discussion. She reveals that her husband, Gonzo is the most jealous and controlling. and I want to ask a favor or another favor. Ask what you want, señora he responds. Call me Babara. This will make me grateful for the rest of my life.

Damian prepares reports or stuffs a few pages in a folder, actually he makes confetti of all the rest of his files. Remembering Barbara's words about how rich he will be What is going to happen to Peque and he remembers her saying $3 million is enough for that thought to disappear in smoke. The $3m and being with Fernanda will be mutually exclusive. Without notice, In comes Fernanda. He picks up tickets to shove in his coat pocket while she is carrying plans to go on the honeymoon trip. the director of finance is forbidden to work. Tomorrow at this time we will be flying on our honeymoon. We will leave all this behind and nothing, nothing, nothing will change our plans. [Doomed plans start with never or nothing or always, especially when repeated two or three times, right?] -Break

No one knows what a hell this last 15 years have been for me, reveals Barbara, the jealousy of my husband the ingratitude of his children, when I loved them like they were my own. Sorry, she sniffs the tears begin to roll cleanly past the extra thick eyeliner, to be sharing my confidences. Don't worry you can trust me. I can imagine you need to unload yourself on someone. The eyes dance without revealing the real person on each side of the table.

We as a family are very united and I will defend it no matter what the price. He coughs into his napkin to hide his reaction. Suddenly, she says, we need the money deposited in 24 hours. in exchange ask me what you will, she cries and says again, just in case he didn't get it, ask what you will. She thinks this will flush out his real desire to invest in Grupo Lactos.

Damian says, of course little one tomorrow we will go on our honeymoon. You have great hopes for this trip? She nods, at last we will be far away and alone. She talks about all that must be done before they leave, meeting with the architect on plans for the community center. He wants to start the honeymoon tonight. But she wants to relax and start fresh when they are away. Foiled again says his expression. remembering that Barbara said he will be gone.

Jacinto races into the Elizalde barn to appear from behind when Camllo rides through. Jacinto says I know you wanted a time to check out Santoro's office and I know he is not there today so it is your opportunity to look. Camilo says it's good when a dog knows its owner and rides off (looks to me like a case of swine flow not swine flu has hit the pueblito) Jacinto smiles and rides off on his bike, the trap is set. - break

The horse race is on Barbara and Franco look out the exclusive window at the track where the other horse race is on. What is your answer? She apparently expects an instant capitulation to her charms. He responds that it isn't easy to move this fast. She stands to circle behind him, to dispense with $3 million in 24 hours or not a week or a month what's the difference. The Elizalde family does have some problems, very grave problems. What is wrong with Grupo Lactos. It's not Lactos.with problems but the family. Gonzolo is tired and if this doesn't go better, he won't live long. Those silly boys, like Camilo only seduces girls. and Fernanda, poor Fernanda, Franco almost breaks What about Fernanda? She is always giving to everyone with her kindness and we need money for her projects to help the infants and mothers. He regains his composure to ask, And why are you telling all this to me, to help my family to sacrifice myself for my family. What do I have to do to receive a positive answer. She does ugly cry better than anyone and says she is desperate to save the business. He needs to think. She lets the tears roll without end. He hands her his handkerchief while he urges her, don't cry anymore. With her undaunted bravura, she says, Then tell me, are you going to aid me? yes or no! [Well you didn't really think you would get an answer tonight, now did you?]

Next: Camilho finds something hot in Franco's office and Franco finds something hot at the end of his lunch, - Barbara.

Dear Amigos, I will need a hand to recap the Wednesday nights of June 17 and 24. Anyone want to fill in, try it out or at least be willing to post summaries to facilitate discussions? You can answer here or write to cherylnewmex@gmail.com. Thanks.

Thanks, Cheryl. I was busy and only listening with half an ear. Thank you for filling in the other ear. I had no clue on the exchange between Jacinto and Camilo, among other things.

As for the power lunch, wouldn't you love if Fr/Ed had said, "Three million in exchange for whatever I want? My oh my, call girls are expensive around here."

Or better yet, when she kept repeating "whatever you want." To paraphrase Indigio Montoya's answer when the six-fingered man offered the same: "I want my (mother) back, you son of a bitch."

Mmmm...nothing better than a hot lunch, Ms. Cheryl...thanks for a sparkling recap, wonderful vocabulary and a great title. You were firing on all cylinders last night. Can't wait to watch this (at lunchtime as a matter of fact!)

Thanks for the recap Cheryl. I dozed in and out so missed quite a bit. Thanks for filling me in.

Be honest now guys, how many of you really heard what Gardenia said when she almost had a wardrobe malfunction--again.

I was hoping Fr/Ed would smack Jairo in the face and take his gun. But no. How disappointing.

Here is a Wikipedia link regarding The Prince http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prince. I was hoping to find something that I could search to find the words fox or wolf and maybe it would give us more information to the riddle.

I'll say thanks in advance Cheryl but I'll be back later to give a comment. I have a quick question. re: "Gepetto is confused but surviving and luckily doesn't quite recognize Franco Santoro". Why is it so important? Who does he have connections with/how could he blow Eddie's cover. This was mentioned a couple of nights ago also in a very dramatic way when Gepetto asked Jacinto who had rescued him. Thanks

I think I found it! http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~wldciv/world_civ_reader/world_civ_reader_1/machiavelli.html

Go down to the paragraph that starts "Since it is necessary..." 4th paragraph down.

Some notes and thoughts about tonight:

It was intriguing that Ed decided to end the confrontation with Jairo by slamming the door in his face. Leaving Jairo the way he did just helped to build negative energies in Jairo. If Eddie thinks he solved the problem, he didn't.

What was the deal with the coffee between Anibal and Damian? First, Anibal COMMANDS the secretary to bring two coffees, Damian says no - he doesn't drink coffee. Anibal tells the girl to go ahead and that starting this morning - "You will drink coffee.". Then, the girl hands the cup of coffee to Damian and he reaches for it - and Anibal tells the girl to take it back, that Damian doesn't drink coffee. Such a strange interchange. Why did the writers make this such a big deal? At any rate, you could see Damian was absolutely steaming by the time he left the office and is motivated to help Vladimir in the next scene because of the way Anibal treats him.

Did Babs didn't mention about the milk going bad in explaining why the company needed the money so urgently?? I didn't catch that, if she did. BTW, whatever happened about the expired powdered milk - is that subject just "hanging around" to bite someone in the butt later? Also, I haven't seen where Babs has told Artemio about the milk going bad yet??

Isn't Babs taking quite a chance begging for this money? It would seem that if Eddie were to come up with the money and save the company - her plan to wreck the company would be squelched. I guess this makes perfect telenovela sense, but is not logical.

Oh well, a lot of things don't make sense. For example, why doesn't Babs just get Gonzalo to make her his beneficiary in his will, off Gonzo, then fire the kids from the company - like Dale Earnhart, Sr's wife fired Dale Earnhart Jr.?? I guess it wouldn't please the telenovela gods? Or, maybe that's another telenovela.

Here is the quote

Niccoló Machiavelli 1469 - 1527

“A prince must imitate the fox and the lion, for the lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. One must therefore be a fox to recognize traps, and a lion to frighten wolves. Those that wish to be only lions do not understand this. Therefore, a prudent ruler ought not to keep faith when by so doing it would be against his interest, and when the reasons which made him bind himself no longer exist. If men were all good, this precept would not be a good one; but as they are bad, and would not observe their faith with you, so you are not bound to keep faith with them.”

Niccolo Machiavelli

Liked the way Fr/Ed dodged that Latin beso.

3 mil!!! in 24 horas, she's not THAT beautiful or hot.
I guess that is where the 3 mil is coming from for Damian, well we know he will be empty handed.

Crying!!, there's no crying in business dealings! "Whatever you want" wonder how many times he's heard that?

Fr/Ed really has his hands full, Lil, Jairo, Martina & Silvestre, Babs, Fernanda, Camilo, mafia man.

The only thing lagging are the Santiago & Aurora scenes, but hopefully that's over.

Great episode & great recap.

Cheryl, Two beautiful things from last night's episode, your excellent(as always) recap, and those two gorgeous martinis. I could almost taste them. Babs pretty well had me convinced. What pretty eyes, what a seductive smile, what an evil soul.

Carlos

I think Silvestre recognizes the name Franco Santoro. That has to come back to bite our hero in his nalga bello.

Thanks Variopinta. When I went back and read the paragraph I found it wasn't complete.

oops, nalga bella

I'm surprised that with all our brilliant minds that no one recognized Machiavelli, it took Esteve Norton.

I'm ready for Esteve to come to Mexico. He's an interesting character and would pair up nicely with Gardenia.

Carlos

Carlos- we think alike- gorgeous martinis, pretty eyes, seductive smile, evil soul. Eddy was barely containing his hatred, did he cough "Bullshit!" into his napkin, or was it my imagination? Babs really thought that she could seduce a stranger to hand over $3M within 24 hours to pay Damian his promised money? Whate are those writers smoking? I want some. Waht are the chances that Franco begs Esteve for the dinero, and bops Babs' bones?

Eddy was foolishly macho with Jairo. Taunting him about using his "toy", which he had just used against Silvestre., then slamming the door in his face. Only in a TN...

Connie, I was listening to Gardenia, I can multitask...

Silverfox- I thought that coffee scene was odd, too What was the point of that? Maybe just an awkward way to show the nature of the relationship between Any?balls and Damian (and Flor, and the rest of the world!).

I think that Babs did mention the milk in the course of describing the problems at the plant. Now THERE is a selling point for a cash infusion to a manufacturing business. Then she goes on to say that the money will be diverted to the family for Fernanda's pet project...al very odd.

We can all agree that things are very odd in this story...

Variopinta- what is the pueblo in your pic, and the significance?

Cheryl, thank you so very much. For some reason I was into body language last night:

Aurora: "Her coldness makes her shared dna with Barbinator all the more believable." That's it!
That's not sad puppy dog eyes some of you are getting tired of. It's frustrated bitch eyes! She feels the call of the Bitch in her! As Babs daughter, she is not expressing her genotype and it's killing her! Run, Santi, Run, let your greasy locks flow in the air, I think Miss Rory could turn to the dark side and join Mommy Dearest in some major havoc-wreaking!

And our other lovely, Gardenia: She reminds me of Shirley Temple with her cute pouting and bursts of righteous indignation, tramping about with her fists balled up, eyes flashing, and curls bouncing -- Shirley Temple with boobs. I mean that's cute, but "oh my guudness!" wouldn't you get tired of it all the time and on a 20-something? (Well, I know some of you guys will disagree!)

Then there's Damian. Lawdy, he was so smooth last night. Go back and look, his movements were so fluid and suave and he does cut a fine figure in his impeccably tailored suits.

And Barb. Phony heffa. Nice recap, always love the vocab, it oughta be good tonight!

Khalilah

Thank you CherylNM. Loving your vocabulary and your humor.
Really getting into the riddle what with the challenge of thinking thru what does a mathmetician and a philosopher have in common. This is great!
Yeah the puppy dog persona needs to add other qualities to this character.
Speaking of adding to character...hoping please that Bar-b Take Fern shoPPING. Maybe Fern is not ready for 'power red' yet but anything gorgeous like Barbara's wardrobe. She's a rich girl. Dress that part.

I hoped Franco would twist the pimp's hand disloging a bullet into his toe, but there's time. And he did look so strong just doing that face-off.

At last I found out why the dinner location was so special it required approval from Ani. A box at the racetrack. That was so nice. Now just how far does Barb think she can go in a box with a glass wall? Wonder how much rejection can she take without going ballistic? She looked a little off balance when all her usual ploys were not bringing the expected responses. Lovin' it!

Cheryl – thank you for the recap. Apparently I understood more than I thought I did from last night’s episode. (hooray)

Since when does someone’s nameplate in the U.S. read, “Steve North Junior”? Isn’t that always abbreviated on a nameplate? Or have I been out of the loop too long?

Will Machiavellian principles apply in this plot? Hhhmm… Thanks for the links, Connie, so we can refresh our memories.

”Doomed plans start with never or nothing or always, especially when repeated two or three times, right?” Yikes! Something to add to my list of Telenovela Rules.

Geez . . . Barbara all but said, "I'll even 'do' you for the money." Could she have been any more obvious? Eeek!

Thank you Connie so much for that Machiavelli link. Have you worked it out as to what he and Newton have in common?

Ha hahahah hahah! Doris, you're right, I meant to mention that about Esteve's name plate! One of those little details that get messed up crossing the language border! Fun-ny! Esteve still looks scary to me. He should come to Mexidoom, befriend Scary-haired Santi and take Rory off the market as someone suggested. Hey, that would be great, then Esteve, Santi and Dominga would be great for a hair care product placement makeover!n (Dang, I'm smozed to be workin'!)

Khalilah

Carlos, I was watching the toothpic in Barb's martini. And I didn't catch Franco actually sip his, I don't think he did. He did sip his water though.

That coffee incident between Anibal and Damian was maybe just to show how Anibal enjoys humilliating people. Damian obviously knows how what he's dishing out is going to come back on him.

Franco did not drink from his martini. I was watching.

Bonney, I think you are right, I don't think that Eddie even tasted his martini. What a waste. I was halfway expecting him to order a glass of milk or maybe a sarsaparilla.

Carlos

I really have fun watching Fr/Ed's facial expressions. They can change in a split second! He's not going to fall for Barbie's tricks. He's playing her.

I saw a side of Rory last night that I didn't like. She only has one expression and I'm getting tired of it already.

Maybe Eddie thinks the martini might have poison in it?

The only good thing about the Rory/Santiago subplot is I now having something to FFWD-->>> through when watching my recordings. Saves me some time.

Cheryl, thanks for the great recap and all the helpful vocabulary. I was glad you noted the classical flute music in the background at the start of the meeting between Barb and Fr/Ed. To be honest, the music choice bothered me. As a lover of classical music, I'm dismayed at how many times this kind of music is associated in films and TV shows nowadays with the bad guys. It really bugs me. I see it most with opera, which I LOVE. So too apparently does the evil nazi or tyrant or sadist in the flics. It's not clear that Barb likes classical music--she's probably using it to show class. But still....

I noticed the coffee thing too. I didn't get it either. And the other day when he practically screamed at the poor receptionist I wanted to reach out and slap him. There is no excuse for treating people that way.

My boss is like that sometimes. He likes to entertain in the coference room and I hate, hate, hate it. I feel like a waitress. I finally bought myself a busboy tray and a black apron so I only had to make one trip to the kitchen and I wouldn't get food on my clothes! :P

Thanks amigos for the kind comments. I find myself watching with bated breath to see if Franco can find a way to really insult Barbara in so subtle a way that she will have to maintain her phony begging but will realize he doesn't want her at all.

PaulaH, interesting how we have Princess Bride and The Prince figuring in here. Maybe we can get Aurora and Barbi to do a Darth Vader and Luke scene at some point.

Alice, if I remember correctly, didn't Eduardo/Franco find an ID card with the Franco Santoro name on it and thought it sounded good. That sets up the possibility that there is a real Franco out there who may pop back in at some inopportune moment. Also the blacksmith was involved with Eduardo, even made the heart Ed gave little Fernanda with the FE engraved so he may see Ed through Franco at some point when he feels better.

Judy, thanks for noticing the return toward normal. This stuff just flows through me and catches what ever is in my system. We are all doing better. That Tila is still on the way but I'm setting up the for the art show for Sat and Sun. Any one in Abq area come to Corrales this weekend I'll be at the Corrales Winery and you can even sip wine while you look at my photos and Dyanne's watercolors.

Connie and Variopinta thanks for fine detective work locating "The Prince" on Wiki and the quote itself. Nice of the authors to send us some intellectual heady stuff to go with all the lovely skin shots.

Silverfox, I agree with later comments that Anibal is so insecure he needs to put someone down and Damian is his only opportunity. Clearly he can't berate his wife enough to satisfy his screaming ego.

Julie, what was the phrase you used regarding snot nosed kids? I I think it is apporopriate for Cadmilho and Anyballs even though they are adults.

Khalilah, I love your body image remarks, especially the Shirley Temple in Gardenia made me laugh. And yes, we should get Barbi to share some of her tart clothes taste with Fernanda who is so beautiful but so prim, at least so far.

Silverfox and all, I heard Barbi say that they had not sold any milk for over a week at GL and the company was in trouble with disappointed customers but she didn't reveal that it was because they had to water the ground with a million spoiled gallons. Actually, how would they have dispensed that much sour milk. My Mom had a great recipe for sourmilk cake that she learned to make in her Iowa farmgirl youth. But that is an awful lot of cake.

Carlos, those martinis did look beautiful but wasted. Between that and Gardenia's wardrobe issues, being able to follow dialog is a tribute to your obvious skills as both an observer and a listener.

This $3million is intriguing, it will clearly cover only the payment to Damian but Barbi is probably going to leave a trail to lead to his destruction later, but this is not enough money to get GL out of trouble. She is really spinning a deadly web. I can't wait until tonight to see how Franco will keep from spitting on her.

Juanita, I agree that the classical music was used here to show Barbi knows how to be classy. Spanish guitar music would have been even more lovely and perhaps more appropriate. Funny how the juxtaposition of showiness of the private glass cage, the ring and necklace worth more than my annual salary pitted against her cry for a measly $3mill to save the failing company. And he is supposed to be so turned on he will fall for this?

I don't think he was buying what she was selling---er, uh, giving away!

Cheryl, very funny recap, thanks. Love that the writers gave us something intelligent to work with in the riddle.

I was thinking Nanda wardrobe will change when she is finally a "woman". Kind of like when Sarita's entire wardrobe changed. Right now she is all buttoned up for a reason.

Okay, when Gardenia leaned on the desk you could almost seen all the way down to her navel! Holy cow and Fr/Ed never even looked up!

I love how Fr/Ed keeps his cool. Woudln't Barb just die if she knew who she was throwing herself at and being turned down? She really thinks she is all that!

Beyond tired of Santi and Rory, she's not into it and she isn't worth the time. I want a Santi/Gardenia pairing. The two decent Elzaldes end up with people so "beneath" their station. That would be awesome!

Dorado Dave, That is a picture of Guanajuato Mex from the statue of the Mex hero Pipila. I was there for 3 weeks in October & loved it. A beautiful city with a lot of character & in the mountains.

I noticed Fr/Ed didn't touch his martini either or the wine. When he drank it was water. No wonder Babs was crying, martini's are potent potions.

I think the café thing with Anibal & Damian was a power play. Anibal is a little frustrated about Babs power with Gonzo.

Love it when the TN gives you some education, DA tequila, Pasión Mex history, FELS nada, zip, cero. This one a little about horses, milk, Machiavelli & I guess Isaac Newton.

Cheryl: Excellent recap - thank you. I enjoyed your vocabulary and many phrases, particularly: "yellow submarine door".

So many interesting and thought provoking comments already.

I wonder what surprise Fr/Ed planted for Cad?

I agree with others who noted Aurora's rejection of Santi (especially after such a heart-wrenching declaration) was chilling. Her expressions are as emotionless as Babs. She may well be her mother's daughter.

I also wonder why she never told Santi about Babs and Damian.

Diana in MA

I was curious about El Hipodromo de las Americas, since I like horse races, corre caballos. Here is a link, it's in Mex city.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip%C3%B3dromo_de_Las_Am%C3%A9ricas

Cheryl, thanks once again for the recap. I wonder what Ice Queen Barbi did before she went to work for Arti. Poor Gonzo and Damien, you can sure see how Ice Queen Barbi manipulates them. I almost feel sorry for them. Not really, they deserve whatever they get at the end.

If we got the correct translation of the note, I think that Isaac Newton is a living, breathing person that holds to the key to whatever. The note said take it to Isaac Newton!

Machiavelli and Newton. This is admitedly a stretch, but Machiavelli's great work was Il Principe, and Newton's great work was Principia.

About the fox and the lion. We saw both in Ed last night.

A. He was the lion when Jairo was the wolf. Muscular, ravenous, base, primal. So Ed answered him on a primal level. Ed didn't just show that he was more powerful. He showed that he thinks Jairo is such an insect, he doesn't even register on his radar. Anyone who beats up women and old men is a coward, and cowards run and hide when from someone strong. Ignoring the gun and shutting the door in his face was posturing, to intimidate Jairo.

B. Ed was the fox with Barbara's traps. That's why he didn't touch his martini. A fox needs all his wits. He knows Barb is setting a trap for him, but he doesn't know what. He will not just slam the door in her face; he needs to see more clues. Her first weapon was sensuality, and he demonstrated that was ineffective. That will throw her off balance. Now she will have to opt for a second-best weapon, and perhaps she will commit an error and he, as the wily fox, can score a point.

Cheryl, great recap, and thanks for the vocab.

Juanita, I agree that it's frustrating for them to juxtapose classical music (or opera, which I also love) with the evil rich people. But of course these shows are geared towards audiences that probably think classical music is pretentious.

I was thinking about the Isaac Newton connection. So far, I'm thinking what goes up, must come down. Maybe Fr/Ed has to build up Barbara's hopes until they collapse of their own weight, or something like that.

Excellent recap Cheryl. You write like a novelist. Love the descriptive words. Loved the cat and mouse play between Eddie and Babs. She was laying on the charm thick as her eyeliner while he glared at her with barely concealed contempt. Will Nanda and Damian actually go on their honeymoon? I'm glad Jacinto told Eddie about Camilho wanting to search his home. Can't wait to what kind of trap Eddie left for him.

Newton and Machiavelli -
So far all I've gotten (understand) is Newton created the philosophy of physical science. Machiavelli created the philosophy of social science. A reeally reaallly top of my head understanding is that every thing of nature is predictable. so...

I got to go back to that riddle translation.

Uooo.ooo. PaulaH what a great analysis. I'm with you.

Paula loved your analysis of Eddie being both the lion and the fox. Great observation.

I second that Pirate Babe. Great description PaulH, primal and HOT!

Barb tried sex, no dice. Then she turns on the turns, nada, what's her next move? She's not used to not being able to manipulate a man.

That was supposed to be tears. Oops!

PaulaH I also agree. That makes perfect sense. We'll have to see what happens tonight. Women like Barbie hate losing and she definitely lost that round!

So if Machiavelli is saying the end justifies the means the reference is meant to comfort 'the white king'.

Gorrrrleeee! Paula H., what a perceptive, erudite and articulate analysis, My Dear. I gotta show my husband who thinks I'm just blowin off time!! Seriously. I think you nailed it, girl! Love these comments! And yeah, whomever noted, Rory didn't tell Santi about Babs and Damien. I know a lot of youz don't like her and Santi's part but I think this chick really has a potential for eeevil which could become important in the future.

Also, as someone noted, Francuardo found a license a phone booth and took the name from it. Now that was dumb. Geppeto probably not only senses something familiar about Francuardo but probably knows the real Santoro, too.

Cheryl, I love how you acknowledge our comments and tie them all together weaving a tapestry often more entertaining than the show. All you guys, great reading on a cold, rainy day.

MOLLY – remember to watch for the hairstyle changes, too! That often is more noticeable, for me at least. Hairstyle change always signals a new etapa.

Right. There's always a hairstyle change.

Doris and Connie, yes, remember Gabi also let her hair down. I really had to laugh in Alborada with the magical blooming rose. These shows are not often subtle! Although this one is certainly giving us lots to chew on.

If Rory turns to the darkside, then maybe Santi will take up with Erika. I don't want Erika to turn bad. I like her, she is just really messed up, but she does seem to be really nice. Like Pris. I want good things for them. Rory is getting on my last nerve.

I just saw on the internet that FC and I have the same birthday! (different years of course.) I feel so special! :}

Maybe the note end reference to Newton was encouraging the white king to follow the math/money?

Molly, I am having a lot of problems liking Aurora too. She is drop dead beautiful but so self centered and has such a lifeless look on her face. Bad hair aside (even a fatal case of bedhead) I am very pro Santi and I cannot believe how she acted when he poured his heart out to her in this episode. She just doesn't deserve him one bit. And yeah, why didn't she tell him about seeing Barbi and Damian doing the bunny hop in front of the beautiful blue stained glass window nor did she mention that Camilo the Cad tried to put the moves on her. She is not righteous enough to derserve saintly Santi.

Do you think her character is changing or has our perception of her character changed because of who we know her mother is? Hmmmm...

Connie congratulations on sharing Fernando Colunga's birthday. I have the same birthday as Alexis Ayala (most recently in Juro Que Te Amo, also Yo Amo a Juan Querendon).

And I am so proud we are discussing Newton and Machiavelli. I will have proud things to say at El Grupo tonight. Maybe someone there will have a hunch about the meaning of Isaac Newton. There have been several strong hints that he is a character we are about to meet, but I wish Lili would stop being such a basket case so she could help solve this most puzzling of puzzles.

Connie, I don't think her character is changing, I think it is developing. She was just kind of blah and seemed sweet and lost. But here is this guy busting his hump to try and help and she's got the freak'n personality of a dish towel!

Contract with someone like Rosario, who had a crappy life, but stayed a really good person throughout the story. I think we are just really starting to see who Rory is. And me no likey!

I have got to type slower or pay more attention...

...Contrast that with someone like Rosario...

I gotta run out to my Spanish LIt class, keep the puzzle solving going, I will check in with you all after class and before El Grupo tonight. Willa has been walked by the river which is rising. It's melt off from this lovely 70's to 80's weather we are having.

Cheryl, one of the immigrants in our coffee group shows such contempt because I watch novelas which in her perception are the ultimate in nacos. But here we are, a group that includes professors, a doctor and other med. professionals, and a bunch of teachers, doing literary analysis, bringing in classic literature, etc. Two worlds.

And as for her displaying her contempt obviously (instead of hiding it), más vale naco sabroso que fresa baboso (better a sweet naco than an uncouth person of the upper class).

do you think Barbi really thinks she's going to get the 3M from Franco, or is she faking the beg in order to run him off scared from the deal and ruin the company? she's already got a bunch of money stashed away from the earlier shows when Anibal was livid over the investments she and Damian supposedly made.

Connie...Julie must be busy today. Her wonderful phrase (as I remember it) was:

Booger Snot-Nosed Kids

She does have a way with words.

And Paula, way to go! Very nice analysis. You should print it out and show it to your snotty ice maiden.

Cheryl....the show sounds really exciting. Hope you will tell us about it afterwards. You are incredible to even think about my té de tila with all that you have going on.

Khalilah...love your responses...yes, show that discussion to your hubster. But let's be honest, no one but those in "the group" can really understand the fun we all have together with these shows. That, even more than the sharpest analysis, is what makes the site such a treasure.

Thanks a million, Cheryl! I missed a lot of dialogue last night for some reason. Didn’t get Damian’s strategy for Vlad, so I really appreciated your recap.

Good reminder about Newton, Anonymous. When the riddle first appeared, someone mentioned that Isaac Newton is listed on wikipedia as a character in the novela, so we know he is a real person of some sort. Maybe Fr/Ed resisted Barb’s touch because he is worried about contracting H1N1—her nose will be running with all of those tears.

I am confused with Babs motives also, at 1st she wanted nothing to do with Powhere Meelk because she wanted to destroy the company. Now she is laying it on strong, tears, caresses, hand touching, is that to discourage Fr/Ed? She mentions problems with the business & the family, that would be a turnoff for any investor. But I think that 3 Mil is what she has in mind for Damian or more likely herself.

Barb wants to get out of Dodge fast. If she leaves with her cash, and then PM invests in GC, the company will be saved. But if PM invests $3M now, and Barb runs with it, PM will not put in any more money to rescue the company after she's gone. That's why she wants the $$ immediately.

Great recap, Cheryl! Yes, figuring out Barbie's big plan isn't easy. The coincidence of the $3M looks like the payoff to Damian. But many commenters thought she never was going to give him the money. And, if the money isn't for Damian, then her plan to financially ruin the company isn't helped by the infusion of cash. Maybe she does mean to paint the picture so black that the company wouldn't want to invest.

Re Aurora, I'm certainly sick of her, but I don't think she's bad. I think she's resisting Santiago for his own good. She doesn't think she's good enough for him (orphan with questionable parentage; almost sold as a sex slave by Dominga, etc.). She also is somewhat wise in that marrying someone you've known a week is pretty crazy. And, they weren't doing a civil marriage, easier to dispose of, but the full Catholic ceremony.

Thanks Judy. That's it! Booger snot kids. Yep, sounds like Anyballs and Cadmilho.

I go home and tell my boyfriend, "we think this, we think that." He just asks me who "we" is. I say all of us on the blog. He just doesn't get it. He didn't know who Becky Sanchez was. I felt so proud to tell him it was Babs. He wanted to know how I knew that! I said, "WE know everything!"

I left out "nosed."

Santiago's hair is getting on my last nerve.

Using the links on the MEPS Telenovela-World site, I found this "elenco" list:
http://www.americatv.com.pe/novelas/meps/elenco2.asp
which shows a character named Isaac Newton near the bottom of the list. So some of you might be right, unless there is a historical flashback, which would not surprise me from Telerisa.

Thanks, Cheryl. It seems that that whole crying jag of BabBEE's was to scare Fr.ed away from investing in GL. won't she feel deflated after offering to do ANYTHING for the 3 mil when Fr.ed says, ''Thanks...but...no thanks.'' I was pleasantly surprised that the cryptic note Ciro hid in the chesspiece was actually a literary allusion which means that the writers are aquainted with the great works of literature...always a plus. Now , how does Sir Isaac fit into the equation ??? I, too, got a big kick out of STEVE NORTON JUNIOR.

No matter what happens next with Dam, I'm pretty certain that the honeymoon is NEVER going to happen. Nanda must remain pure and virginal for Eduarodo...or at least for Franco. The female leads usually get to do the bunny hop with only one bunny...the leading male bunny. HOP ) HOP ) HOP )

Cheryl, thank you for another great recap!

One thing has been bothering me. We, the viewers, now know that Aurora is Babs' daughter, which some of you suspected, but I wouldn't say Babs was the least suspicious when the two met, or even when Aurora asked Babs about her family. But if I'd been a mother separated from a baby, for whatever reason, I would suspect any person of the correct age and gender to be a possible child of mine. So do we assume that Aurora is not the name Babs (Rebeca) gave her? Or maybe Babs assumes her child is dead? Because she shows absolutely no interest in the possibility that Aurora might be hers.

Variopinta, I have a picture of myself in that exact spot in Guanajuato. I visited in 2007 when my children were living with a family there. I especially loved the colors, and wanted to paint my house magenta the minute I got home!

Cheryl: Another really enjoyable relating of Barbie's chutzpa and overall "juggling" of events, so to speak. LUVVED that title. --
Great take on Ed's lion and fox analogous attributes and actions.

Well, I dunno what to think about the request for the 3 mill. I really believed that Barbie's idea was to take the money and run, because I (probably mistakenly) assumed she'd already put the 3 mil into Damn's checking account and thought that might have come from Cigarman, but then I realized that Damn has to leave Fernanda before he gets it because he cannot have the dough until he dumps her for really real. So now I'm thinking that maybe she does think so highly of herself that she figured it would be a slam-dunk to have Fr/Ed fall for the damsel in distress act and/or seduction and that would be what she used to get the 3 mil as Damn's pay-off. Fr/Ed doesn't have the cash and this sob story of hers would be his way out of having to fork it over.

P.S. Melissa: Was out of town. "Dominga kinda looks like Mimi Bobeck from the Drew Carey show." LOL! That was a great line. It was driving me crazy till you made that reference!

I believe I said "boogersnot kids." "Snot-nosed kids" probably would have been better, but I wasn't able to think of that at the time!
