Tontas Tuesday April 28, '09 Mario Tightens The Screws, Paulina Vows Not To Lose, Toño's Got The Blues, and Candy And Santiago Are A Snooze

Well, here we are again, with a whole lotta shakin' going on but not much action....yet. For me, the highlight of the evening was Lulu belting out Reina de Corazones. Our little lady really has a set of pipes....yowsa! Of course they did put her in a ridiculous dress (I'm ready to kill the costumer or the director or both) but no matter. She still gave a magnificent performance.

But that's later. Here's what came before. There's the mysterious conversation with Santi and Mario in the kitchen where Santi reassures him that Mario is "de una sola pieza" (a guy with integrity) and they have no need to go over old stuff with each other. Irony 101.

And then there's the little matter of Chava's jealousy of Patito. Clearly a fast fix as are all other problems in the show (other than Candy's reluctance to let herself go with a new love).

Now onto our sleazy PSA about older women being entitled to a pleasurable sex life. Hey, don't get me wrong. I'm all for it with the right guy.... but how could that possibly be Arturo? No matter. He's inviting Gregoria for a torrid weekend and after dithering for a while and consulting with her daughter (that strikes me as icky too) Gregoria decides to go for it. Sure hoping they don't have a product placement for some kind of lubricant. I wouldn't put it past 'em.

The big dinner at Santi's house isn't going that well. (do they ever?) Paulina's grumpy about Mario's behavior and Santi reminds her that Mario has always loved being the center of attention. Candy's jealous of Pau's presence at the table and in the house; Santi is thrilled...jealousy is an indication of love, in his books anyway...and they clear the plates and head for the kitchen to discuss the matter. (Tina's in the hospital recovering from surgery).
There's a sweet little scene, complete with that poignant romantic theme music, while Santi thanks Candy for reminding him that true love is what's important. It's not about jumping from bed to bed. In fact true love is so important it's even more vital than soccer! (we'll see how long that lasts). Candy agrees after a little hedging. Actually the part about this scene that I liked was he pretended to go way back in his ancestry all the way to the Tarahumara Indians...a tribe that first came to my attention when Nathan Pritikin wrote about them in his groundbreaking work on cholesterol reversal through diet. Okay, I know some of you are going to sleep...I'll stop right there! The scene ends with some kisses, but nothing that shivers these old timbers...and Candy reassuring Santi that she trusts him and it's fine for Paulina to continue staying at the house.

The lady in question is playing up to Rocio, talking about how they're a family again and maybe Rocio could bunk with her tonight. Santi puts the kabosh on that and zings Pau by noting her sudden devotion after living perfectly well without them for 8 years. And Rocio's off to bed in her own room, with Lucia. Score one for Santi. He's definitely large and in charge when it comes to parenting.

A brief squabble scene between Toño and Zamora. All a misunderstanding but I suppose it will be a while before Toño and Lulu actually get together. In the meantime, our little guy thinks Zamora is playing with Lulu's feelings. In a later scene Zamora assures him that even though Lulu's losing weight and looking better, she's Toño "terrain" and he's not about to go poaching. At this point, Isabella and Jaime arrive for dinner. Meño gives Zamora strict instructions to do a good job waiting on them. We learn that Zamora and Jaime have "really good chemistry" and team up well on the piano/singing bit. So we're pretty sure they'll find out they're father and son in the future. Definitely a big old theme here of fathers separated from sons and the longing for reunion. A little twist on the typical telenovela mother-child split.

Alright. Another quickie scene. Candy and Lulu are jogging but Lulu can't keep up (I've only got two legs!) so they jog in place for a minute while Lulu quizzes her....Iz you or iz you ain't Santi's baby? Candy denies it of course and we have a little memory rodeo of all the Institutitas giggling and gossiping about the romance. Totally middle school/junior high. Strange.

Now onto the power play going on between Mario and Paulina. She's saying it's over. He's saying it's not over until HE decides it is. In the meantime, he'll pressure her into his bed and into going back to New York with him. How? By threatening to tell Santi the whole reason she left 8 years ago was because they were lovers. She resists, seems to call his bluff several scenes later, but finally caves when he's about to spill the beans.

There's pressure of a more benign kind as Candy tries to drum up a little enthusiasm for the new baby brother. Chava's not interested and thinks Patito is a stupid name. No parent points for Candy. But later big Pato will save the day.

The Charlie/Daniella saga continues. She's afraid to go to the clinic and get tested. He vows to help her, support her, go with her. She's still hesitant. She needs a kiss. Because if she does have Aids, no one will want to kiss her. A very sweet kiss ensues. Somehow I found this beso far more touching than Candy and Santiago's. But I'm sure some of you feel differently. We'll talk.

Patricio is gushing about the baby, thrilled that he's at the house and totally uninterested in Alicia. She hands off Patito and heads off to sulk. Santiago's getting the bad news from Raúl that his baby is not dead but has been given up for adoption. Marissa wants you to suffer, adds Raúl helpfully (NOT!), thinking that some day you might pass him on the street and never know that he's your son. We pause a moment to consider the cruel irony of these two scenes.

Another quickie break. Lucia has a bunch of youngsters over to plan their Fiesta de Condones. Isabella thinks the name needs refining a little. How about Fiesta de Protección? And since they'll be giving young people all kinds of helpful info, not just about condoms, HIV etc., how about Fiesta de Alegria? So it is and so it shall be.

Santiago, in his distress over the adoption news, turns to Candy for comfort. Candy gives him her usual "don't worry/be happy" we'll find him and be together routine, and he jumps on it and says "together as a family?" Maybe. If all goes well, is her hedged reply. Now frankly, this just bugs me. She's all confident about finding the baby even though that's not in her power. It IS in her power to say whether or not she'll be with Santiago in the future. But on THAT, she refuses to commit. The woman is a tease, plain and simple. Strictly bromides and not now, maybe later from this chick. Give me a break.

Okay. Rant over. It's Paulina's turn to qvetch, anyway. She's lurking behind the hedge like an anorexic wicked witch, vowing over her dead body will those two form a family! Talking to yourself, now? queries Mario, who's also lurking. And forget about breaking those two up, he continues, Santiago's found "true love" at last. He wants to pull her off for a more extended talk. At first Pau resists. Then she goes. Then he kisses her. Donato sees them and clears his throat tactfully. Paulina slaps Mario in a feeble attempt to look innocent but our Donato isn't fooled. Mario amps up the threats a little bit and assures Paulina he's not a "trapo viejo" (old rag) to just be tossed in the trash. Looks like our fashionista is trapped for sure. They play out the tension a little longer with Mario actually going up to Santi and whispering that he has something very important to discuss and that's when Paulina caves. And Candy whisks off before Santi can ask again for some kind of commitment.

Arturo and Gregoria are at Candy's house, oohing and aahing over Patito. Arturo actually holds the baby and looks tenderly at the little tyke. (Could we actually be rehabbing this old coot? Hard to swallow, frankly) And big Pato steps in and takes charge, inviting Chava over to spend the night and get to know his little hermanito. He plays it up big, casting Chava as Big Brother with Superpowers, perfect for a little bro to play soccer with, learn from, adore...man, such a deal! Chava bites and they're off for a fun-filled evening, complete with Pato being the mechanical bull and jouncing our Chava all over the place. Good times.

Mario's back at the house, revising his story to Santiago. Since he can't rat out Paulina, he blows some smoke about needing advice to deal with his abandonment. But Santiago can't help. Not really the same situation. True, Paulina didn't have the guts to tell him face to face. But she did leave him a note. And since then their communication has been civilized and courteous. Not like the total abandonment that Mario's lover put him through. Said lover has just tromped into the guest room in a snit, banged her skinny shin on the bed (hooray!) and vowing to separate Santiago from Candy. (I just can't get anxious about this possibility but I presume we're supposed to worry. Yawn.)

Okay, our hyper Santiago has left the house and is jumping all over Meño like a giant cricket. We're novios, we're novios, we're novios, he chortles. Meño pretends to misunderstand and assures him that he and Tio Meño are NOT a couple! No no no, your niece and I, babbles Santi happily. He's in such a great mood that when he hears Zamora is homeless (not enough money from dwindling tips at restaurant to pay the rent. His mom has moved in with an aunt since they were thrown out of the apartment) that he offers our waiter lodgings at his place. (great...more opportunity to find out Jaime is really his long lost dad).

Okay. Enough of that. Now we've got alternating scenes with the Abandonados (more hip swiveling dance moves with Raúl and Lalo. Raúl is better...but they're both pretty good) and then our hot, but smokin' hot diva, Ms. Lulu's Back in Town, belting out a song like you wouldn't believe. Fabulous. She seems to blow off poor Toño when he tries to congratulate her (making a face to the Institutas like he's a big bother) but then wants a kiss. We have a great back bending fantasy kiss (you go Toño!) and then the reality brief peck. The girls reason he's be tall enough for romance if he stood on a ladder. Oh, poor Toño!

More palaver from the boys. A lame joke about easy women and what's the difference between American, French and Mexican conquests. A challenge when Lalo maintains that his woman is COMPLETELY SATISFIED at home, and he's put to the test. When asked, Chayo quips that she's RESIGNED rather than satisfied. This leads to lots of hoo-hah and wrestling. Do guys really act like this? The Institutitas and the Abandonados both seem stuck at the 6th or 7th grade level to me.

At Patricio's house, sibling rivalry has been solved but dang, that bed-wetting is still going on. Chava wants to go home to mom now that he's drenched the bed and his pj's but Patricio solves it all once more with fatherly understanding and they trot off to find dry sheets and nightclothes.

Alright. A wet bed for Chava. A lonely bed for Pato. An equally lonely bed for Alicia. A hotbed for Gregoria and Arturo? (Ugh, I don't even want to think about it.) A rancorous bed for Mario. He's forced Paulina to come and to get in it, but she's making it clear she's not there by choice. But who knows, maybe that's a turn-on for Mario. He's clearly into power games.

And what kind of bed...if any...for Candy and Santiago? He's built a little shrine to himself in her living room, complete with a picture of him with his "chinos" (curls). She thought he'd be with his Abandonados but he'd rather be with her. And Meño gave him the key. And Chava's not there. And neither is Gregoria. She's all cool and coy and ready to give him a kiss and send him on his way. He maintains that his kisses last until morning. Well, then he'll just have to make do with a really brief kiss. He pulls her in and starts to kiss her....pretty darned effectively, as only our Jaime Camil can do.

Will she cave? Will she let him lead her up the stairs....to bed...to bliss...to whatever? Find out tomorrow. If nothing else, the Mario-Paulina coupling promises to be interesting.

Vocabulary:
trapo viejo = old rag
"el amor no va cuando los nietos llegan" =Candy's "get it on" instant proverb for her mom. Grandchildren don't mean that love is over.

Proverb of the Day:
Antes de que te cases, mira lo que haces. = lit. before you get married, look what you do. Our English equivalent "Look before you leap". Good advice for Gregoria, but too late!

I can't post this for some reason. So I hope somebody else can. Gracias!

Okay...I have it posted now. Strange things going on with our software tonight.

Ha ha! A PSA for lubricant...Judy you're killing me!

I am SO enjoying Pau getting tortured by Mario even though I typically don't condone his sort of behavior. Do we know why Mario keeps calling Santi "Shanti"?

You're right, Santi did look like a giant cricket! He's...ahem...very limber.

Good grief, the writers are certainly heavy-handed with the Zamora/Jaime hints.

Wasn't it fun to see Lulu belt out her song? She's really coming into her own. Now if only the wardrobe idiots would dress her in more flattering outfits! They should all be forced to wear outfits three sizes too small as punishment. I loved Tono's mini fantasy. Still waters run deep.

Thanks Judy! It was a wonderfully clever recap and I enjoyed your proverb of the day. I think that's a new one for me. I hope your day has gotten better and that you have a lovely rest of the week.

Hi Sylvia...things can only get better....right? I too loved Toño's mini fantasy....and talk about limber!...being bent back in a kiss like that, by a "chaparito" can't be easy. More kudos to Lulu.

Judy: I laughed out loud as I read the title, so I knew what followed would be be stellar, and so it was. Your vocabulary and proverb were perfect for this episode.

I am continually impressed and inspired by the wealth of knowledge of our recappers. Judy, I was intrigued by your Tarahumara Indian tribe/N. Pritkin reference. I don't think there is a topic that you don't have knowledge on or about!

Something came up and I missed the entire episode. I was really sorry to have missed Lulu's singing which I was so looking forward to. However, I'm glad I missed the wardrobe malfunction. Sylvia, love your idea that the wardrobe department: "... should all be forced to wear outfits three sizes too small as punishment." Excellent! :)

I think you defined a huge part of this story with: "Definitely a big old theme here of fathers separated from sons and the longing for reunion. A little twist on the typical telenovela mother-child split." And just as painful.

Another interesting change is the
role reveral showing the woman trying to "cast away" her unwanted suitor: "Mario amps up the threats a little bit and assures Paulina he's not a "trapo viejo" (old rag) to just be tossed in the trash." We're starting to see more of this, i.e. Vlad and Pris on MEPS. Enough pain to go around for everyone.

"A wet bed for Chava. A lonely bed for Pato. An equally lonely bed for Alicia. A hotbed for Gregoria and Arturo? (Ugh, I don't even want to think about it.) A rancorous bed for Mario". I don't want to think about Arturo and Gregoria either. He is a total creepfest. Blech.

Looks like Pat and Santi both handled their fatherhood responsibilities effectively but in different ways. It's nice to see two great fathers who interact so lovingly with their kids.

Terrific recap, Judy.

Judy and Sylvia, I'll get my skillet and meet y'all for a march on the costumers who insist on mis-dressing Lulu. Ruffles, for heavens sake??

My guess for product placement for Arturo, when he finally gets poor Gregoria where he wants her, (ICK!) is little blue pills!

I'm still a Patricio fan, and am dreading to see his reaction when, inevitably he has to give 'his' new son to Santiago. He lost Candi to Santi and will soon lose the baby to Santi also. Gotta happen, but, poor Pato. The hits just keep on coming.

Judy B, thank you for the excellent recap. You are so right about Arturo; surely they can't mean for Gregoria to be truly involved with that scum bucket. I am still waiting for the teen lover with the birthday flowers to show up and rescue this sub plot.

If they rehabilitate Arturo, that will be a herculean task, IMO. The only way they could do that is if he decided to come forward about the death traps he built that people are living in. That would work for me.

I'm glad that Santiago and Candy are happy together; but I'll just have to take their word for it, because I'm still not seeing the passion. It's ok. It's just a relief that they look happy. I doubt Santiago has a drop of Tarahumara blood, but I guess I'll take that on faith, too. (I can recommend the U. Arizona Press book: "Tarahumara-Where Night is the Day of the Moon." Click at my name.)

Great observation about the father-son quest as a theme in this show: Patricio and his sons, Santiago and his son, Meño and Charly, Jaime and Sven, maybe even Arturo and Patricio. Is there anyone else? Patricio was pretty darned good talking to Chava about his little brother. I believed Chava was convinced.

I agree with you about Charly and Daniela's kiss; there was a lot of emotion in that scene. Those two are destined for each other. It was sweet.

Was anybody believing that teen party at Lucía's'? It's been a long time since I was a teenager, and I don't have teenagers in the house; but that just seemed surreal.

To me, it is frustrating that Candy won't commit to Santiago; but I don't think she's really a tease. Anybody who would fake their own death and live as a single mother in hiding for 8 years has serious issues with trust. I'm believing that it's going to take her a while.

Wow, as if Jaime and Sven performing together isn't enough to reveal themselves to each other, they're going to install Sven at the manse now and be around Jaime 24/7. That should do it alright.

Lulu's performance was a bit of a letdown for me. She didn't look as pretty as in Toño's daydream; and though she has a lot of enthusiasm, she sings regrettably flat. I could barely stand it and was glad it was over in a hurry. Meño told her she can't sing every night, thank goodness. It also bugs me that Lulu is cruel to Toño; but I guess that's what she's learned from others toward herself.

Regarding Mario and Paulina: since I believe that Paulina is still in love with Mario and has always been in love with him -- which is why she left Santiago -- I think it's ok that Mario is pressuring her. They are in love in their power-couple way, and they belong together. I think they are the hottest thing going in the show.

I think Paulina has had a mounting guilt attack over leaving Rocío and Santiago -- and blames Mario. That is why she's back in Guadalajara and trying to shake Mario. But she will fail; Mario is still in her head and her heart, and that's where he's going to stay, IMO.

Judy, thanks for yet another wonderful recap. I really enjoyed Lulu's singing as well. I'm willing to forgive the outfit. I didn't care much for Candy's dress at the dinner, but I thought that Santi looked very professional in his dark suit. Donato had my favorite line telling Pau,"don't worry, I didn't see what I saw." I hope things get better for you.

Carlos

You know what, I just don't see Art and Greg together. If the writers mentioned Greg has an old flame somewhere then I'll bet he's going to reappear. I hope!

I don't think Lulu was being cruel to Tono. I felt it was just residual annoyance at his earlier unreasonable jealousy. They are probably still working out how their relationship is changing from being coworkers to novios.

True, she was a little flat but she's got potential. I don't really see that sort of music as being an appropriate style for the dining experience, maybe she should try crooning as opposed to belting. I will, however, grab my cast iron skillet and join Emilia on the march against the wardrobe staff. I want to see more of Lulu singing but NOT in ruffles or tutus.

Jeri, good point about the teens' eagerness to host a condom party. It just isn't very realistic is it?

Oh yeah, a condom fiesta for teens? I really must be getting old. I can't imagine my little princess(now all grown up)announcing,"hey Daddy, I'm going to a condom fiesta at Lucia's, you remember, the girl who thought she caught HIV from her boyfriend."

Carlos

Ha ha!!! Carlos, when you put it like that...

Interesting comments everybody. I think we're all agreed that Gregoria and Arturo are a bad matchup.

Funny, I didn't notice that Lulu sang "flat" and usually that really bugs me. I even have a CD of Tony Bennett singing with K.D. Lang that is excruciating when he goes flat...Hey, maybe I was just distracted by the ruffles.

Jeri...I'm intrigued that you think the Mario/Paulina couple is the "real thing". Will be interesting to see what develops.

I do enjoy the role reversals, Diana...seeing guys as great parents and women with the power to leave a relationship if they choose...although that's not working for Pau right now.

And Carlos, thanks for the good wishes....the situation hasn't changed but I'm coming to terms with it and ready to accept the reality, painful as it is...for the moment.

Change is part of life, and hey, next time the change could be for the better!

Hmmm...feeling better after a hot shower and some Advil (not a product placement) and thinking about the Candy situation. Jeri...you make a good argument for her not being a "tease" but having huge trust issues....so I tried to analyze why I find the character soooooo annoying.

Here's what it is: She minimizes everyone else's problems while maximizing her own...to hysterical levels.

It's ridiculous to dismiss Santi's worries about his baby son with "it'll be fine, it'll all work out, blah blah blah. She has no way of knowing that and she's basically saying "don't feel what you're feeling".

On the other hand, when she catches her husband kissing her sister, she goes ballistic, strips off her wedding gown, runs away and fakes her own death. Maybe she should have said to herself, Don't worry. It will all work out. etc. the advice she hands out so freely to others.

I dunno. You need to be in love with the main characters in order to find their potential romance interesting and I just can't get excited about these two. (I apologize Paula...I'm being negative...but so it is...) Things COULD change.

You're spot-on, Judy. Poor Santi looks like he's 'kissin' his sister' and Candi just doesn't get into it at all. Whassa matter with that girl. WE'D get into it, right ladies??

Judy, I wouldn't wish Candi's platitudes on anybody - just know that I am sorry you are in pain, am thinking about you and really hope that the next change is for the good.

Hey Emilia...thanks for the good wishes and I DO think I'm due for a "good" change next time around. Hope destiny and the universe feel the same way.

Yes, strange that those kisses aren't better. I know from watching Fea Más Bella, that with the right partner, Camil's kisses are moan-inducing. (me, not the partner) Wowsa. Maybe that's part of Candy's "I'm not ready" routine and it will change.

JudyB, I hope you feel better soon.

Candy is one of those people, as I mentioned before, who do things behind their own backs.

People like her start up self-help institutes because they so desperately need it themselves. They don't know how to help themselves, so they help others, trying to massage that itch, I think.

She admitted that she couldn't control her feelings and deal with them, and that is why she took such ludicrously extreme measures in faking her death.

I can understand why people have a hard time identifying with her -- few viewers have that much trouble dealing with themselves as she does. Most people are more in touch with themselves, I think.

Candy is eager to solve others' problems, maybe because of the way she suffers with her own. It's not a bad impulse; she truly wants to help people, and I don't think it's patronizing really.

She seems to have genuine empathy for others and in the end, humility. That's why I can admire her.

Sylvia, I will try not to have hard feelings against Lulu over Toño, LOL. But I really like the little guy; I'd probably snap him right up, were I in her place. He's adorable.

Hmmm... mi esposa's comment above tells me she wants me to start putting the dentures in before I smooch on her. A lot to ask, but for her, I reckon I'll manage. Now if she'll learn to bring me my beer before she starts ironing my shirts, we'll call it even.

Anyway, the Mario and Paulina couple strike me as made for each other. Vain and shallow, they probably like to discuss moisturizers over perfectly chilled Pinot Grigio. Judy, "Fashionista" nails it for both of them - Mario's goofy use of scarves and neckties bugs me somehow. Quite a pair: all they need to survive is a mirror.

Judy, a great recap! Thanks for putting it together.

Thanks so much Judy!
I'm just not feeling it between Candy and Santi. I wish she wasn't constantly smiling!!! I don't know why it bugs me but it does.
I said to my television when they were kissing, "just pretend it's someone you like Santi". They do seem more like brother and sister.

A condom party, oh no! I just can't be that old.

I like Pau and Mario together. He is a match for her for sure.

I didn't think it was the best song for Lulu. I also didn't like the way she rolled her eyes at Tono.

Pat is seeing way too much loss. He's a wonderful father to all the boys.

I always feel Judy that life is like a roller coaster we all have to get on at some time.
One sure thing to know that even when you are in the valley the hills are up ahead.
Best of luck to you.

Carrie L.

I just had a horrifying thought: what if Rocío were Mario's child, rather than Santiago's. But there wouldn't be any point to that, would there?

Ay yi yi...Rocio as Mario's child. Surely not. God forbid. But yeah, could be so, depending on when the love affair started. I'd like to think it was after Rocio's birth. Evidently studies show that women's satisfaction in a marriage goes WAY DOWN after the arrival of children. So maybe that's when Paulina got itchy feet and started to roam.

Mike, you crack me up. (Hope Emilia's laughing too.) And I agree...that scarf tied around Mario's neck was just too frou-frou for words. Yep, a mirror is all the both of them need. That and the latest diet book since she, at least, is obsessed with being super slim.

Great recap, Judy, light and funny throughout.

I never thought Paulina might really still like (love?) Mario, but if it's so, that would solve a lot of problems. At this point, though, it looks as if she's agreeing to have sex with Mario so as not to lose Santi, which doesn't make too much sense. It reminds me of the kind of things Sara on Querida Enemiga used to do to get Alonso back.

As for Lulu's song and outfit, of course she was singing Reina de Corazones by Alejandra Guzmán. This song is from the late 80's or early 90's, and that's the outfit Alejandra wore at the time, sort of Madonna-esque. So it looked a little out of place on Lulu, but remembering Alejandra's video, I think Lulu pulled it off. As for her singing, Guzmán also sings below the pitch at times and corrects up. I think Lulu was really doing a pretty good imitation, and could easily sing right on pitch if she wanted to.

Wow...I've liked Alexandra Guzman when I've heard her but that's not very often and I haven't seen that video. Thanks for the explanation, Hombre. That aspect went totally over my head and everyone else's I think. Takes a musician!.....

Yes, Paulina is definitely performing under duress...and it's not clear to me why she suddenly wants Santi back. It's not because of Rocio. Her maternal gestures are totally phony. Maybe she's just tired of Mario (or tired of working for a living) and wants a safe place to land while she regroups.

Still, in terms of vanity and shallowness, as the others have pointed out, Mario and Pau are a good match for each other.

Judy, great recap, and I loved the "Is you is or is you ain't" line. That song kept running through my mind yesterday for some reason and now I'll be hearing it all day again today. Well, that and OK Go's "It's a Disaster" since I have a deadline today.

A PSA for lubricant...ha ha, that would have been gross. Greg and Art are more of a PSA for abstinence. I think he's over her already; now that he's got her he's lost most of his enthusiasm and actually seemed kind of annoyed when she said she wanted to go on the weekend trip.

Hah Julia...did you notice that too? He was kind of like...what trip? when Gregoria finally said yes, she'd go. He threw in a perfunctory "te amo" but that didn't bode well.

And Carrie, yes, you're right, life is a roller coaster. But you know, I HATE roller coasters...doesn't matter whether it's up or down, those lurches just give me major stomach clutches. But, but, but...not ready for the alternative. So I'll suck it up. Thanks for the wisdom and the encouragement.

How's the weather down in Florida by the way. Cold and rainy up here...perfect Ohio Zoloft weather once again.

Oh and Julia, hope you meet your deadline with flying colors today. You certainly turned out a crackerjack recap last night. Are you "best when stressed"?

I remember once reading an analysis of how children of schizophrenics turned out (nooo...don't take this personally). Anyway, contrary to popular belief, the children were not all slated to be disasters. One-third were. They were like fragile crystal, and broke when stressed. One-third muddled through. More like malleable clay, a bit distorted and out of shape, but not major disasters or a problem for the social or criminal justice systems.

And one-third?....turned out great. They were like steel...hardened and strengthened by the stress. These people grew up to not only to be high-functioning, competent adults but also compassionate and helpful to others.

So stress alone does not ruin our lives. It's how we respond that counts. (there's a sermon...or a telenovela in there somewhere)

I love that they repeat the Dance Dance Revolution hip-swiveling bit periodically. No matter how many times I see that, it will always make me laugh.

Thanks, Judy. I'm sure it will be fine in the end.

I'm pretty sure I'm the "muddle-through" type, whatever mental issues are in my family. Incidentally, though, one aspect of the thing I'm working on is figuring out whether the metal has been hardened by stress...although in this case it's aluminum.

I agree with everyone about how weird and unrealistic the condom party seems. All the teens I know would fine that either annoyingly condescending or totally embarrassing.

I meant "find."

Thanks, Judy. Great recap. Hang in there; I'll say a prayer for you and your family member.

I think you nailed Candy's issue. If the problem happens to her, it's a catastrophe of epic proportions. If it happens to someone else, it's a triffle and they should cowboy up.

Remember early on, every time someone would tell her their problems, she would interrupt, "Oh, that's nothing. Let me tell you about my wedding."

But I think her core issue, even deeper than that, is that she is totally self-absorbed. Miss Centro de Universo. Other than Chava, she can't spare much love on anyone. Not even on Meño when it's not convenient. She put Santi and Pat through so much pain, stringing them along, but since it didn't impact her, no le importa. She says she loves Santiago, but what has she done to demonstrate it? Let him kiss her? Let him give her a ring that she won't wear? Pat his head with platitudes and then scamper home?

I haven't had a Candy rant in a while. I was overdue. Santiago has a penchant for picking losers. Rachel, come back!

Regarding Pobre Patricio. Not only did he lose Candy to Santi, and we know he will lose the baby to Santi. Who else does he love in this world? Chava. The pieces are still in place for a custody battle, and who do we think will win that?

Someone asked why Ali wants the adoption to be a secret. I think it's because she's on the birth cert. as the birth mother. She doesn't want the law to catch up with her.

And everyone asked why no one noticed that Marissa and Alicia were gone at the same time. I think it's because they are in different circles of friends. They KNOW about the other circle (e.g. Gregoria knows about Marissa), but only vaguely. Candy is the only one in both circles, and she is self-absorbed. Pat knows Mar disappeared, but I'm sure he doesn't think about Santiago if he can help it.

Could Roc be OMario's? Yes, but.. in novelas they always show a cosmic bond between parent and child, such as between Sven and Jaime. We haven't even SEEN Mario with Roc, whereas the relationship between Santiago and his daughter is fabulous. One of the two best relationships in the whole show (the other is between him and his mother).

Santi and Rocio definitely have the cosmic connection. Also, last week I saw the EXACT SAME expression of amused disbelief that Rocio frequently makes on Santiago's face. For less than a second, he looked exactly like her. It was a tiny moment of pure genius.

I hate roller coasters too Judy, and airplanes, boats, long car rides, etc. They give me motion sickness and migranes.
I'm not so wise, I've just gotten thrown on life's roller coasters often. I'm good under pressure and tend to fall apart when it's all over.
I've been dealing with a parent with a severe brain injury for several years. That on top of the usual family problems, etc.
I'm sure at times my BP is sky high but I keep plowing along.

I'm really hoping for some passion between Santi and smiling Candy.

I hope the baby is found out soon before Pat falls head over heels for it. I think he's on his way.
I've gotten to like Pat and hate to see him hurt over and over.

Arturo seemed a wee bit disappointed to hear that Margarita gave Gregoria her blessing and her husband.

He recovered right away, but then called Gregoria by his soon-to-be ex-wife's name.

And then they had him forget momentarily about the weekend trip; so all that stuff is adding up.

I hope the teen love with the birthday flowers appears about the time Arturo disappoints Gregoria.

I love taking a break and coming back to find all these interesting thoughts and ponderings.

Carrie...first of all, I'm sorry you've had to take that roller coaster ride so many times, but infinitely glad that you do well under pressure. And hoping your blood pressure isn't high all the time as that can be really tough on your kidneys. We need you healthy, my girl! because it sound like you're juggling many responsibilities.

Julia, only you could be both an engineer and such an excellent writer. The combination knocks me out. I'd say "pure steel"; you're functioning way above "muddle through". Resilience is a popular word right now and it's the same thing.

Paula, thanks for that rant about Candy. I was feeling like a total churl not liking her. Good analysis of the problem. Did the writers intend that, do you think?

Nice catch, both of you, on the affinity between Santiago and Rocio. As written, both he and Pato are excellent fathers, but in totally different styles. In real life, we know it's a lot harder than that, and I don't believe either actor has any actual children. But I'm certainly enjoying the portrayals.

I'm reading Detectives Salvages by Roberto Bolaño and ran across a great expression:

cazando musarañas (hunting shrews)

which translates to daydreaming.

It sounds like Ohio Zoloft weather might be perfect shrew hunting weather.

Carlos

Jeri...good analysis of the Arturo-Gregoria situation. Yes, I'm certainly all for him ending up back with his wife. They seem to be well matched. She likes his money and he likes his money. They say common interests really help a marriage! And then our newly liberated Gregoria can console herself with the faithful swain who sent flowers all those years. (After he's forgiven her of course.)

Oh and Paula...thanks for the prayers, and again, all of you, for the good wishes and good vibes. All of this helps immensely. I wrap your kindly affection around me like a cozy, warm shawl and it feels wonderful.

My goodness..."cazando musarañas"...that sounds a lot more active than daydreaming or woolgathering. Shrews are really fierce when cornered, no? That would bring one back to reality super-quick.

Carlos, you must get by on about 5 hours sleep. How you can run a busy medical practice, watch these telenovelas, train dogs, read interesting literature and make your perceptive and generous comments I don't know....but I love it...we all do. Thanks. Will have to look into that author.

Bye for now...gotta go back to work and earn half a living.

Well, about Candy; if she were really the self-centered beeyatch some have posited, why would she go into one of the helping professions?

She would have got more out of a job where she was the center of attention, rather than the client being so.

Unless one wants to make the argument that the institute makes Candy the center of attention, as her column and radio show do.

But I tend to think that is a function of the hero/heroine aggrandizement that inevitably goes on in telenovelas; i.e., everybody, and I mean everybody, must fall in love with the hero and heroine.

Witness all the women fawning over the hero and men falling in love with the heroine -- and some of the women falling in love with her, too.

That always makes me laugh, when they even have the gay characters falling in love with the hero/heroine. It is so transparent what they are doing. I just want to shout, "Yes! I get it! The main characters are desirable!"

Oh, yeah, before I got off on inherent telenovela foibles there, I meant to say: if Candy is such a self-centered witch, then maybe her sister despising her makes good sense.

Hombre, (pardon my spamming here, three in a row) thanks so much for that tip off about Lulu's act! Whew, I am glad to hear it. I hope to hear her sing with her own voice at some point.

Jeri...I think you could make the argument that both sisters are self-centered. But Alicia hates Candy because Candy's more successful...gets more attention and true luuuurve than Ms Alicia ever does. That's sure grounds for resentment.

I haven't quite seen this yet and haven't thoroughly read through all the comments but I like the title and the beginning.

I think I know why Mario calls him shanti. I think it has to do with another gag they had running from LFMB days. They used to make fun with each other on the set and they had a funny character voice they would always imitate. I don't remember exactly but I can figure it out.

Carlos I look forward to the Fiesta de Condon scene. How funny is your comment. Can't imagine my daughter doing that either!! :)

Kris, a Fea reference I didn't catch? NO PUEDE SER!!! Me da TANTO verguenza! You're right, they do horse around in French, and Omar's French is always terrible (but his German is worse). I just watched #77 where they play with the French version of "sensual."

Hi Fuego...well of course you like the title...it's a "Fuego title"...imitation being the highest form of praise, you understand.

On the fiesta de condones, I have a nutty friend who presented protection talks to Ohio State students for many years. She made herself "condom earrings" and wore them quite often, to the horror of her conservative, low-key husband.

Sorry for the late post, it's been hell day at work. I just wanted to Thank Hombre very much for his musical insight into Lulu's act. It explains a lot about what she/the writers were trying to accomplish. Maybe I will force the wardrobe staff into clothing only two sizes too small instead of three.

Oh, and thanks to Kris for her explanation of "Shanti". It did very much sound like Omario was trying to affect his accent in some way but for the life of me I couldn't figure it out because "Shanti" wasn't playing along.
