En Nombre del Amor, July 8, 2009

Javier and Sagrario are arguing and get into an accident. Paloma wakes up and screams. Paramedics are tending to the injured couple who are being rushed to the hospital.

The next day: Macarena asks Paloma if she slept well and she looks at Carlota and says yes, I just miss my parents. Paloma wants to talk to her parents and says that her mother called her last night, but Carlota gives her the stink eye and she says that the call dropped. Carlota tells Paloma to call her cell phone. Macarena says I have the hotel number written down and leaves to get it. Carlota grabs Paloma and tells her to tell her parents that everything she said on the phone last night to them was all lies. Macarena comes in and says that her parents have already left. She comments how weird it is that they already left. Paloma says she asked her mother to come. Carlota makes a nasty comment to Paloma that her parents couldn't even enjoy the wedding of their friend. Macarena defends her.

At the hospital the doctor says that the patients are not doing too good.

Macarena, Carlota and Paloma go to church. Paloma sees Romina and they smile at each other. A young looking boy looks at Paloma.

Cristóbal wants to know what room number the Espinoza de los Monteros are staying at. The desk clerk advises him that they have already checked out. He asks for there number, but she says she cannot give it to him.

Natalia is crying and wonders why Cristobal has not called her yet. She doesn't understand what happened. They were opening gifts just yesterday morning all happy. Her friend (didn't catch her name) comments that Sagrario is not in her hotel room and wonders if something happened to make her leave suddenly. She should be here consoling you too.

Camila shows Diana in. She wants to know how Camila is doing and tells her that Samuel is moving out of Mexico. Camila is shocked and gets teary eyed. Diana feels bad. She thought Camila knew. Do you still love him asks Diana. Camila says it would be easier if I wasn't, but what makes me more upset is his lack of interest in Romina. Diana tells her to get out of the house and look for more options. Camila says no, I will find happiness again and make sure that my daughter will never miss the love of her father.

Paloma wonders why her parents are not there yet. Macarena says they are probably doing something in Mexico. She tells Paloma to help her make cookies for them so when they get there they can have it with coffee. Evil Carlota looks on.

Javier and Sagrario are in surgery.

Macarena receives a call from the hospital. She says they are on there way. Carlota wonders what is going on. Macarena tells her that Javier and Sagrario were involved in an accident. Paloma starts crying and Carlota grabs her and tells her that it is all her fault that they were in an accident. Carlota wants to leave right away, but when Paloma says "I want to go to" Carlota forbids it. She tells Macarena that the hospital is no place for children.

Diana comes home and tells her husband Rafael that she went to see Camila. She can't believe that Camila didn't know that Samuel was leaving Mexico. Rafael gets onto her and tells her that "I told you not to say anything that Pablo told me!" And yet the first thing you did was tell her. I think it's unbelievable that Samuel the womanizer is running around while Camila is at home crying. Rafael says you have no right to gossip. There son Emiliano says stop fighting and walks away. Rafael asks him where are you going? Emiliano says that he cannot stand gossip. Rafael gives Diana a dirty look.

Camila and Romina are sending out invitations for her birthday party.

Carlota, Macarena and Paloma walk into the hospital with Paloma crying loudly. Carlota wants to know how her brother is doing. No news says the nurse. Carlota walks away and Macarena wonders how her sister-in-law is. The nurse tells her that she is in ICU. Macarena wants to know if she can talk to the doctor.

Natalia's friend (I can't understand her name. My husband says Yvonne or Marivonne. He says we latin woman are hard to understand when we are emotional. I say whatever) Anyway her friend says there's a call for you from Cristobal. Natalia wants to know where he is at. They need to talk. Cristobal says he knows and that tomorrow he will come over to explain. Then he hangs up on her.

Paloma gets to see her mom and promises her to behave if she can just get better. Sagrario tells Paloma that the best thing that has ever happened to her was meeting her father and having her. Paloma tells her that she loves her. Sagrario tells Paloma that if anything happens to her that her father will always be with her. That her aunt Macarena loves her just like a mother would. Sagrario doesn't know if she will be able to watch Paloma grow up. Paloma begs her mother to promise her that she will not die. Sagrario tells her that if she does die to make sure that she helps her father finds someone to love him and make him happy. You and your father have both been my greatest loves. She tells Macarena to promise her that she will always take care of Paloma. Macarena promises her while Paloma cries out to her mother to promise her that she will not die. Sagrario dies.

Carlota asks the doctor how her brother is. He tells her that he did not make it. She loses it and starts hitting the doctor.

Macarena tries to pull Paloma away from her mother. She doesn't want to leave.

Carlotta walks down the hall to go see her dead brother. She cries over his dead body and says don't leave me alone. She asks god why all the men in her life leave her.

Macarena and Paloma finally leave Sagrario's room and tell Carlota that she died. Carlota coldly tells them that Javier died too. Paloma starts crying again. Carlota grabs Paloma and takes her to see her father and tells her that she killed her father. She stands there and cries. Carlota calls Paloma assasina. Macarena gets onto Carlota and tells her to never call Paloma that again. Carlota tells Macarena that if it wasn't for Paloma none of this would have happened. Ever since she has entered this world, she has brought nothing but problems. I will never forgive her for the death of my brother. Macarena says it was an accident and blaming Paloma will not change that. Carlota walks out of the room and Paloma says she wants to die too. She's sorry for killing them. Macarena tells her that it was not her fault. They will always be with her.

Carlota is in the chapel and asks god why he took her brother instead of Paloma?

Orlando tells Cristobal that he cannot believe that he would cancel the wedding. Why didn't you tell me that you had doubts asks Orlando. Cristobal tells him that he didn't have them until the day before the wedding. What happened asks Orlando. I just realized I didn't love her enough and couldn't forget my past answers Cristobal. Orlando asks him what happened in your past? Cristobal says he cannot talk about it. It's too difficult. Orlando says you will never be happy if you can not get over your past. Cristobal says this is my punishment for what I did.

Macarena is consoling Paloma. She tells her that when her father died she felt the same way.

Camila tells Romina that the girl across the street parents died. Romina tells Camila that she does not want her to die. She wants her with her forever. Not to even get married. Camila pinkie swears that she will never get married again.

At the funeral Paloma is crying loudly, Macarena lays flowers on the graves and Carlota just stands there like a cold fish.

Cristobal the drunk reads about the death of Javier and Sagrario.

Rufina is with Paloma tucking her in for the night. Paloma tells her that she does not want to live in the house with Carlota.

Cristobal is talking with Natalia, but I lost video for a second and the only thing I got back was Natalia asking him about his past. That she has the right to know. Cristobal says even if I wanted to I can't. Just forget about me. He leaves.

Javier's attorney, Mr. Rojas comes to visit Carlota. He wants to talk to her about the inheritance he left Paloma. Her parents left her the house, a life insurance policy and all the money in the bank account. Carlota wants to know when she will be able to inherit all this. Mr. Rojas says when she turns 18. In the meantime you are named as the benefactor until she reaches the legal age. Carlota asks Mr. Rojas to keep all this information between them only.

Macarena begs Paloma to eat something. Paloma doesn't want to do anything. She misses her parents very much. Macarena says time will make it better. Carlota comes in the bedroom and asks Paloma how she slept. Macarena asks what the lawyer wanted. Carlota says that Javier named her total legal guardian of Paloma and the estate. Paloma asks what does that mean. That I will now be in charge of your education and upbringing. But in reality my brother had alot of debt. Macarena asks how can that be? They were doing so well. Carlota lies and says that he just didn't want us to worry. But things were bad. So I will have to sell the house. Paloma yells out that she doesn't want her to sell her parents home. Carlota tells her that she has too. They don't have the money to pay the debts. And also that she will have to change schools since the one that she attends now is too expensive. Paloma doesn't want too. But Carlota tells her to shush and she will do as she's told. Paloma yells at Carlota that she doesn't want to live with her. Carlota tells her that she is not the only one suffering. So quit your blubbering.

Camila calls Samuel. She wants to make sure that if he leaves Mexico that they will have everything finalized regarding the divorce. She wants him to come to their daughter's birthday party and inform Romina of his plans. He says fine and hangs up on her.

Carlota goes into Paloma's room and plays with the dog.

Macarena cries to Rufina about Carlota and her plans for Paloma. Also for the loss of her brother. She wishes she had the guts to take Paloma and go far away. Rufina says why don't you do it. Because I don't have the money to educate her replies Macarena. Paloma comes in running asking Macarena if she has seen her dog. They all go searching for the dog. They find her drowned in the foundation with Evil Carlota looking on. Carlota tells Paloma what do you expect? Everything you love dies. Just like your parents. Macarena tells her to stop.

Drunk Cristobal answers the door to Natalia. He wants to know what she is doing here. She can't help herself. She loves him and throws herself at him. He pushes her off and tells her that he doesn't love her. He doesn't deserve love. When she tries again to hug him, he pushes her off and says that he is an assasino and slams the door.

Macarena takes a chocolate cake to Paloma and finds a note which says that she has run away.

Tomorrow: Macarena blames Carlota for Paloma running away in which she gets bitch slapped

Can someone tag this please? Thanks.

Carlota has some very serious issues. Why is she so cruel? Another thing the stairs of both Paloma and Romina's house does not have any hand railing on it. Safety issue maybe?

Gloria: This was an excellent, complete and superbly detailed recap. All of your summaries have been great, but this was one of your best. Thank you for adding so much detail.

The cavalcade of depressing events were full-throttle, non-stop and heart wrenching. Hard to pinpoint the worst but it would have to be Carlota wishing Paloma had died instead of Javier and of course, the beloved puppy's drowning.

To me, this epiode was unique as I can't recall one scene or one minute where anyone laughed, someone smiled or anything at all positive occurred.

Perhaps a few lighthearted moments could be added? 1 non-stop hour of bleak is hard to digest.

Diana, I totally agree with you. This was the bleakest novela episode I've ever seen, ever. I had to turn off the scenes of Paloma crying over her dead parents' bodies. It was too close to a reality I recently saw on a major news story. And the insanely cruel aunt killing the puppy, she's like the witch in the Wizard of Oz.

I'm hoping for a different mood when the girls are suddenly grown up, but I have to say the little girl actresses are both very good in their roles so I'll kind of miss them.

Gloria, I so appreciated your detailed recap. You really told it like it was.

Jill

I tagged this.

Thanks for the detailed recap, Gloria. My DVR started late and ended early.

Ditto to the bleakness. My husband made me turn off the sound, as he was trying to read and he couldn't stand the crying (making closed captions a real necessity). Do they have child protection workers on the set in Mexico? If so, they should have intervened to stop the abuse.

I didn't expect the financial shenanigans--that was not mentioned in the original summary. Killing the dog too was just over the top, although by that time I was expecting it.

Thanks for the great recap! I didn't see the first episode, but this episode made me think that perhaps I won't watch this one for a while yet, until things start getting a bit more balanced with good things happening along with the inevitable bad stuff. This was just way too depressing!

I had one question running through my mind though when the lawyer said that the brother had put Carlota in charge. Why?!? Why would he put the welfare of his child in the hands of someone he knows his daughter doesn't like, is afraid of, and is not the best at showing affection (and that's just what he knows; if he knew all that was really in his sister's heart and mind he wouldn't let her near his child with a ten foot pole). Why didn't he leave her care up to the sister/aunt who has always shown love and affection towards his child and whom his child adores? Makes no sense!
Ok. I'm done ranting now.

-Vivi in DC

Vivi, the bickering and then the last fight between Sagrario and Javier makes clear that he had a real blind spot as to Carlota (and Carlota had an unhealthy obsession with him). He was dismissive of his wife's worries.

I'm making my prediction now (and I have not watched or read any spoilers): I bet that Carlota is really his mother, not his much older sister, and that Cristobal is the father. They had to cover up the scandal by having the parents pretend he was their son.
This used to be done quite a bit in the old days (famously to Jack Nicholson--he learned his sister was really his mother). This explains Carlota's unhealthy obsession.

Vivi: Excellent question as to why Carlota was put in charge. It makes absolutely no sense to viewerville.

All I can think of is that Javier did seem somewhat defensive of Carlota (albeit half-heartedly). He seemed to be aware she had faults but had no indication
she was a monster. Had he had any inkling, he would not have left Paloma there when they went to the wedding. In terms of the will, it may simply be he may have thought her stronger than Macarena and more up to the task of Executor. Aside from that, the reasoning eludes me.

Another troubling question on the horizon is how can Macarena allow Paloma to stay there after what's happened?

Jill, good to have you here.

This is quite a gloomy show, but I kind of like it. The plot, through a remake is really unique. I'd put the first two episodes right up on the list of some of Uni's best shows they've aired this year. It's not like the typical recycled novela plot with the leads chasing each other and they can't get together b/c the other has a bf/gf. The saddest part was the puppy drowning. I didn't except that at all! Carlota is pure evil. In a few days, Paloma lost her parents, her new dog, her childhood home, and will now have to switch schools in a new town, living with an aunt she fears. I think Allisson will be on the show starting next week. For someone her age, (I think she's 16), it's rare to get a lead in an adult novela. Most of the novela actors her age are in those horrible teen ones, but Allisson is very lucky to have the chance to work with some really amazing actors on this show. My questions for the upcoming episode is what will happen to Paloma when she returns home? I don't think Carlota would kill her b/c that would mean that she wouldn't get any of Pal's $$$. We'll have to wait and see want happens when Pal turns 18...

My husband actually watched most of this with me. He kept saying what a witch Carlota was. She definately has some serious issues. This is like no other novela I have ever seen. I was crying when Paloma found the dog and Carlota's cruel comments afterwards. I so wanted to smack her.

Gloria – this was excellent.

So far I’m finding this show riveting. It looks like we’re in for great acting, plus finally a script with elaborate plotting and character development. And thank goodness things look more credible, like the hospital scenes. Not perfect, but a big improvement over Cuidado.

I too was wondering why the tight bond between Carlota and Javier. Macarena was saying she’s not good at finances or managing things, so I think that’s why she isn’t taking matters into her own hands.

Of course we now have the big secret – the terms of the will and the state of Javier’s finances. It seems like Macarena doesn’t have what it takes to check up and see if it’s all true.

It’s amazing that Javier would have been blind to a person who is capable of such breathtaking cruelty, even Yorkicide. Yikes!

This show seems to be well produced, but so, so grim. Last night was about 90% crying! I had to FF a few times; I just couldn't take that sound anymore.

Hmmm...Carlota could be Javier's mother. Possible. I have a harder time seeing Cristobal as the father, because he seems too young to me, but it's hard to tell how old the character is supposed to be. Also, I'd have an easier time believing that the sister he had a history with was Macarena.

Is it likely that Javier really was in debt, or is Carlota just saying that as an excuse to sell the house to torment Paloma, and to make Paloma think she won't be getting any inheritance?

This show really needs to lighten up. I don't need to get depressed every evening.

Julia – I think the lawyer told Carlota that Javier was well-fixed, that there was the house plus insurance money plus other money, so Paloma was set for life.

Yes, I think Carlota is scheming to hide the money from Paloma. Evil!

BTW, I have not seen this actress before. Does she always play evil characters?

Wow! What an episode. I'm not sure I'm even going to watch the show...it seems way too dark...but at least we have the recaps--thank you!

"He says we latin woman are hard to understand when we are emotional."--heh, my husband says I'm hard to understand at any time :)

"She asks god why all the men in her life leave her. "--hm, maybe because you're a cold-hearted, psychologically abusive, puppy-killing bitch?

Thanks for the recap Gloria. Dark and bleak so far. I think there was some happiness right before they found the dog. :( NinaK, supposedly the Carlota actress usually played good people. She went out of character to play a bad person in Mujeres Asesinas. She was in the first episode of that, the one and only episode of that I watched. That is even darker and bleaker (bloody, too) than this show. Watching her in Asesinas, I definitely can see her as bad here. I don't know if I can even picture her as being a good person in anything!!
Then that is what makes a good actress. I watched Destilando Amor with Angelica Rivera (Gaviota). Since then, I am finishing up watching her in Mariana de la Noche. She is one mean, nasty person there. Destilando would have had a completely different feel to it if I had seen Mariana de la Noche first.

Thanks for the great recap Gloria. I've been trying to watch without the cc so I can see if my Spanish is getting better. Checking in with your recap, it seems like there is some improvement on my part, but of course I missed some details. It does help that everyone speaks quite clearly on this show (so far at least) and of course hysterical crying translates into any language.

OK, she pushed me over the edge, I cannot believe Cruelota killed the Yorkie. Child abuse and canincide is just too much to take. I know I said I'd bail if she killed the dog, but I'll try to ride this one out.

That aside, I do think the production values for this show are really very good. It was said before, but I have to agree, the hospital scenes alone were so much better than in Cuidado.

I haven't read the show synopsis because they do reveal too much (found that out with Guapos). It just seems like there is some deep dark secret w/ Paloma's birth. I never thought of Cruelota being Javi's mommy. I could see that, but I think it is more likely that Mac is going to end up being Paloma's mother, not her aunt. Besides, Cruelota seems a little too much like a praying mantis, she'd bite the head off of any man who'd mate her (and you know he'd have to be made of some stern stuff to get anywhere near her).

Kat- I loved your final comment about Cruelota. Very right on the money!

Anybody on the west coast know what time this is going to be on tonight? I thought it said 10:00 after the episode last night, but the TV listings in my two newspapers say 7:00. Thanks!

They said it will be on at 10:00, and my cable on-screen guide/DVR actually picked up the change, so I'd guess that's true. Of course, they have totally screwed these things up before.

Is it possible the newspapers picked up their information based on East Coast times? Like, are they showing the telenovelas earlier in the east, and later in the west, so the futbol match can be shown live everywhere?

thanks, Julia! I'll be out this p.m., so I guess I'll just set my recorder for both times to be safe.

Say, if you use a DVR (I use a VHS) can you freeze-frame the captions? With my tape, I have to keep replaying the captions because they fly by so quickly.

Jeff: Glad you are watching this. My first introduction to Letty Calderone was on Mujeres Asesinas as well. She was chilling but mesmerizing. I totally agree with you that after watching that and the last 2 nights here, I could never see her as the protagonist.

Diana in MA

Good question, Maggie. I have one cable system in NYC (Time Warner), where I can freeze frame the captions, but they disappear after a short while. It gives you a chance to write things down, but sometimes I have to replay a couple of times.

I have another cable system (Cablevision) for my country house, and I can't freeze frame the captions, as they are covered up with a pause signal. It's all in the software. The DVRs are the same brand (Scientific Atlanta) and model, but the companies choose to have a different interface.

Thanks NinaK! Interesting. We do have a DVR that is attached to our HDTV, but holy cow, what you have to go through to get the captions turned on and off. You have to reprogram the machine each time. Since we don’t want captions the rest of the time, I just use our old TV and the old VHS recorder which miraculously hasn’t given out.

I've been watching telenovelas for about two years now and while they can sometimes be tiresome, and silly and boring, I can usually hang in there.

But the sheer evilness of Carlotta, the animal cruelty and physical and emotional child abuse are just too real in this one for me. I'm going to read the recaps, but can't watch it until it either tones down or Paloma is able to fight back.

Wow, that's odd, Maggie. Our system for turning captions on and off couldn't be simpler. The cable box has a menu, and you click on or off for the captions. We are not using the ones that are integrated into the TV sets (which as with yours require too many annoying steps to turn on and off).

Are you sure your cable system doesn't have it integrated into the DVR/cable box menu?

With my DVR/cable system, I had to go through a whole process to enable the captions through the DVR, but now that I have them enabled I can turn them on and off using the television remote (not the cable remote). If I pause, the captions will remain on the screen for maybe 5-10 seconds and then disappear.

Jarocha mentioned over on the Gancho line that her mother and a friend watched this show (in its original Mex airing) and were disappointed because it wasn't as dark as the original it's based on. I can't imagine a show much more dark than what we've seen the last two days, so does that mean we can hope it lightens up a little?

NinaK and Julia - it's the HDTV being hooked up to the cable that's the problem. Our old TV is on cable too, but it has a captions button that I just click.

Diana, not sure how much I'll be watching this. Too much into other TNs, so have to skip most of this one. Gancho is much more fun and I'm deep into MEPS. :)

Maybe have to call her Carlota deVille, seeing how she doesn't appear to like dogs either. :( Man she is just mean. Not sure if I see any humanity in her at all. Seems like the other villains have something. Boy, feeling sorry for Paloma. Running away like that, you know she'll be back soon and I would not like to see what Cruelota has planned for her.
