MEPS, 07/24/09: Mousetraps Galore and Plenty of Cheese to Go Around: Camilo Takes the Cheese and Dam Puts On the Squeeze

Capítulo #113

As we resume outside at the Astorga’s, Errorika is on cloud nine and thinking everybody else will be on clouds 10, 11 and 12 smiling right behind and cheering her right through to her wedding, especially Estev and Fernanda, once they get the grand news that they’re the best man and matron of honor. The mule-headed, but ever-smiling ditz is willing to overlook Fr/Eduardo’s disturbingly obvious lack of enthusiasm. (I mean the guy couldn’t be any more of a rag-doll about this relationship, could he?) She promises the old telenovela saw about doing even the impossible to ensure he eventually comes around to loving her as much as she loves him. (If ya gotta work that hard at it, schweetheart, the odds are better getting struck by lightning.) Over at the Elizalde’s, Fernanda is still trying to persuade Santiago that Babs is full of B.S. when it comes to why and how Aurora suddenly left the hacienda; and they both agree that Fer needs some way to prove it.

Santiago confronts Barbara over Rory, but Babs manages to change her story just enough to muddy the waters, purposely making him more frantic than before with the story that his beloved Ah-wah-wah, aka Aurora, left the premises with an intimidating man of sorts. Babs then self-righteously proclaims herself the non-meddling step-mother when they ask why she didn’t lift a finger to stop Ah-wah wah from leaving with the guy.

Suppertime at Jacinto’s has Gardenia denying she had anything to do with encouraging a break-up between Err and Eddie. Jacinto and Margie discuss the way some people fall in love in their childhood and keep that burning, churning hunk o’ love inside for a lifetime, the same way she and he did. (Ah, yes: the supposed and far-fetched premise for this telenovela, lest we discerning folk forget.) He refuses to consider that Denia might be that way about Eduardo. Margie defends her sister saying that love is love even if it is unreturned. The more pragmatic Jacinto warns Denia that a one-sided love is a losing proposition, especially with Eduardo who’s set his sights for somebody (actually, anybody) else. Denia is defiantly adamant. “We’ll see about that! For all his education and fine upbringing, he’s still Soledad’s son and humble rural folk like the rest of us.” (Why are these women always so pig-headed when it comes to capturing the heart of an Alpha-male? It’s gotta be the pheromones.)

Across the way at the Elizalde’s, Gonzo now shows Fernanda and Santiago the photo of Lili signifying “proof of life” that Obregon supposedly had e-mailed to Babs. Babs must come alone with the money to the pier and put it in some designated motor boat she finds there. Obregon supposedly swore that that was the only way would he let Lili go free. Fer can’t believe they’re really going to pay attention to this guy. Babs quickly reminds her that they don’t have much time and cannot risk Lili’s life by defying Obregon. Fer gets suspicious and asks why Babs is the one who is supposed to take the money. Gonzo’s sage reply: “--because that’s what the letter says.” (Duh!) Gonzo says not to worry. He’ll do what he promised by discussing it with Franco Santoro before making a decision. Fer seems satisfied. Just then an inebriated Damian hobbles in on his crutches to make an impromptu appearance and sarcastically jibes, "Since when does the Elizalde family not move a finger without Franco Santoro’s permission?" Stares of disgust are shared by all at his slovenly, sozzled, and most unwelcome two-centavos-worth.

At Las Animas, Eduardo finally arrives home where we share a moment or three of self-doubt with him about his continuing this sham of an engagement to Errika. (After leading Errika and her parents on like he just did, there won’t be any tea and sympathy from this little corner of Viewerville.)

Speaking of being led on, Cadmilo is surprised to see the fancy spred Venus, aka Loafly, has laid out for him on the table when he returns from the distressing chat he just had with her “Uncle Estev.” He tells her that he did speak with her “uncle” and thinks he’s “a little weird.” Loafly says not so much. “He’s only a bit strict and demanding.” Cad guffaws. “Ha! A little?” She jumps to her uncle’s defense. “—You must understand, he swore to my dead parents in front of their grave that he would take care of me.” She asks him to tell her what they talked about. Cad snorts. “He said we had to get married!” Venus pretends mild surprise and smiles modestly. Cad scowls.

Back at Las Animas, Estev is laughing at the way he got Cad to commit to his demand that he must marry Venus. He wonders why Eddie isn’t jumping for joy or laughing along with him since now they have Cad right where they want him, under their thumb [tener en el puño]. Ed says sure he’s glad, but he wonders just how far Estev is planning to take this. Estev says he’d rather know just what happened at the Astorga’s and how far Eddie plans to go with this marriage farce of his? Eddie says his marriage is a done deal and he’s getting married because he wants to. Estev doesn’t look at all convinced.

Meanwhile, Santi and Fer drag Dam upstairs and put him back to bed. Dam continues griping at Fer and manages to drop Franco Santoro’s name somewhere in there among the rest of the complaints. They tell him he’s drunk and to calm down. Pris offers to babysit him while they go back downstairs to figure out the details over Lili’s ransom. The two take her up on it and leave. Dam passes out. Pris wakes him back up and says that drunk or not they need to talk.

Back at Cad’s apartment Cad complains to “Loafly” that her uncle’s idea that they have to get married because of what happened is totally ridiculous. She says she agrees, but it seems that if she’s living in his apartment, then something did happen, but he insists that nothing happened between them. She says they didn’t make love, but it seems that he’s telling her that since she wouldn’t go to bed with him that she means nothing to him now. He tells her that’s not it and goes off on some self-righteous spiel about sex not being the most important thing in a relationship. Communication and respect, he says, are what are important. (Viewerville shares a few choice communal guffaws.) “Loafly” whines that the nasty way he’s talking about her uncle shows he does not respect her. He apologizes for that but says the problem is this is the 21st century but her uncle thinks they are living in the Middle Ages!

Venus takes a different tack and puts her hackles up. “Well, I think the same as he does. It’s my reputation and the best thing a woman can do is only give herself to the man she loves. If he should turn out to be you, I wouldn’t think twice about doing it. Do you think that’s old-fashioned?” “—Frankly, yes, darn it!” She lets loose with a bucket of crocodile tears and turns away from him. “—I thought you saw me as a decent woman, but now I see that you don’t!” (This gal deserves an emmy and a lot o’ loot at the end of this gig.) He goes over to comfort her. “Of course not. There, there now.”

At Las Animas Estev tries again to make Eduardo see the error of marrying Errorika when he scarcely knows her and does not love her just because Ed gave his word to her somewhere along the line. Ed justifies by insisting that he’s not thinking of Fernanda or of getting even with her by doing this. Besides, he says, he isn’t losing anything marrying Err since he figures he’s lost everything he ever had anyway. (Damn! Cue the violins and find me a hanky.) Aside from Jacinto, who he considers to be like a brother, he has no family; and since he had to kill off Eduardo Juarez, there’s nothing of himself left but an instinct for survival that’s pushing him. The loneliness he feels is killing him, and he feels he has a right to start a new life that doesn’t rely on the past or on the Elizalde’s to give it meaning. His convoluted thinking tells him that the old Eduardo loved Fernanda Elizalde, but the new Franco scarcely knows her and wants to fall in love with Errika. Estev raises an eyebrow. Hmmm.

Upstairs in Fer’s bedroom, Dam begins shouting for Fernanda again. Pris tells him to shut the heck up and listen to what she is trying to tell him. She tells him she can’t stand it anymore. Dam quiets down and asks her what’s wrong. “--What else? Vladimir Piñeiro!” Dam’s bloodshot, beady eyes get even beadier as he considers how to best take advantage of the situation.

Said pain in the arse, Vladi, is crying on the floor of the nursery he’d put together especially for Pris and their baby. (Some may feel a slight tug at the ol’ heartstrings, but at this point, I think I’m just as exasperated with this loser as Priscilla is. Forget the Beta male. This guy ranks as pure Zeta –make that Omega--material.)

Damian scoffs at Prissy and the way his buddy, Vlad, offered to marry her just to give his kid a name. Pris screams back that she can’t put up with it any longer and says she’s willing to do anything Dam asks just as long as he’ll get Vlad off her back. Dam tells her he wants her to get him proof that Fer and Franco are lovers and then he’ll oblige.

Back at the apartment, “Loafly” gives Cad the cold shoulder when he refuses to commit to marital servitude, those literal, lifetime bonds of matrimony. “What else do I do? I’ve tried to apologize in every way there is.” “--Don’t strain yourself any more. It’s obvious you don’t respect my ‘uncle’ and you respect me even less.” He asks if he should stay or should go and gets no answer. He knows she won’t speak to him and says she at least should listen to what he has to say. There’s no reply. He gets frustrated that it seems it doesn’t matter now. “What do you want from me?” is Loafly’s demure response. Cad explodes and says he’s the only one there who’s risking something in this! (Yeah. A bon vivant lifestyle of all the wine, women and song his daddy can afford.) Cad says he wants her to tell him just what’s in it for him, give him something that would show him that she might really be interested in him, too. Venus demonstrates with what she does best: a tease and a strip. Cad’s squinty little eyes turn softball size as Viewerville wonders if she’ll forget the prime directive: no sleeping with the enemy.

At the hacienda de los Elizalde meanwhile, the family waits on pins and needles for Franco to come see the photo of Lili and the e-mail and to discuss what the next step should be. Babs suggests that Fer should go up to take care of Dam, but Pris comes down and tells them all he’s asleep, so Fer can stay to see what Santoro suggests. Pris looks for a tell from Fer but doesn’t get one.

In his office, Eduardo tells Estev how badly complicated things have gotten with the Elizalde’s. It seems that Obregon had in mind to kidnap Lili ever since he left the clinic. “All we seemed to do was to make it easy for him!” Ed figures his only choice is to now go through with his promise to pay the ransom. Estev wonders how Gonzo got the photo and Ed explains that it was sent to La Hiena’s e-mail. Alarm bells go off in Estev’s head and he asks if possibly Barbara Greco could be behind this kidnapping. Eddie thinks that it very well could be but has no proof. The two agree that this could be a great opportunity to set a trap for her as Uni breaks for a little mercantile machination…..

When we return, Artemio Bravo watches Lili sleeping in a darkened bedroom and says to himself that having her under his control will be useful in torturing her father because never in his rotten life will Gonzo see her again.

Back at Cad’s, the poor guy is struggling to keep it together as Venus works her working-girl wiles on him. All of a sudden she pulls back and puts her clothes back on. Cad is wondering why she stopped such a major work in progress. “You wanted a sample and I gave it to you. Now you know I’m not some little idiotic girl who lets her uncle manipulate her life.” She pushes him angrily back onto the couch. “--because he can be as puritanical, straight-laced, and sanctimonious as he cares to be, but for your information, what you just saw he taught me!” Cad is suddenly QTH-stone-cold-sober-impactado. (All of Viewerville waits in anticipation for the convoluted explanation that’s sure to come –and is not disappointed.) “What?? You mean to say he taught you that???!!! My God!!”

Venus purrs and pours a little bubbly for Cad while she lets him get his swollen head around the whopper she just hit him with. “Haven’t you ever heard of sensuality and eroticism schools?” “—Do those exist?” (Does anybody need more proof than this that this exemplary equine anal orifice is anything but the brightest bulb in the box?) “—My ‘uncle’ enrolled me in one of the best in the world where they train the future wives of sheiks and aristocratic orientals.” (Hubby is rolling on the floor at this point with guffaws so loud I can hardly hear. Honestly, I can’t help myself either. We both have tears running down our cheeks.) Cad struggles with the schizoid irreality: is this a nightmare or an insane wet-dream gone wrong—or maybe very, very right? “He trained you?” “—Yes, he trained me so that I would become a woman capable of bringing out the real man in anyone who married me.” Cad is salivating as he listens. “That’s the career I studied.” “—With books and workbook exercises, and all the rest???” “—Of course, with professors, books and computers just like any other university.” He gets off the couch and admits his surprise.

Venus provocatively prods a little more. “So what do you think? How do you feel about me graduating in sensuality and eroticism?” (I guess his kiss is his answer that it’s fine by him.) He seems a bit shell-shocked. She lays it out for him. “Just so I know where I stand [atenerse] with you, now that you know what you can expect from me, what can I expect from you?” He stands there contemplating her navel.

Meanwhile, Damian continues playing head games with Prissy. He takes his cup of coffee from her and grouses that if Fernanda’s infidelity weren’t enough, now Santoro is coming over and involving himself with their “happy family.” Pris tells him he’s making a serious accusation and from what she saw downstairs Fernanda wasn’t doing anything out of the normal. He screams impatiently. “What? You still don’t believe me?” Pris says this isn’t the first time he’s told her there’s something between Fer and Franco. It all just seems so impossible! Dam says he knows she loves Fer, but it is not something he made up or suspects. He saw them at the country house. He conveniently stretches the truth with a line that they were smooching like little lovebirds [tortolitos retozan]. Pris asks if he’s complained to Fer about it. Dam lies again and says no, not that he’d expect her to admit it anyway. Pris says frankly, she cannot bring herself to believe it. He whines that it’s her reluctance that is the reason he hasn’t bothered to tell the family either. They’d feel just the same way about it. “--What I need is proof! --And you’re going to get it for me whatever it takes!!”

Pris is beside herself. Fernanda is like a sister to her and the last thing she wants to do is to betray her trust and loyalty or to dirty her reputation like that. “--Stop being foolish!! She’s deceiving all of us.” Pris says well even if that were so, it’s a problem between the two of them and she’s got no business interfering between a couple like that. “—Not even in exchange for erasing Vladimir from your life? I can do that for you. You become my ally and I will also make sure that Anibal never knows the child your expecting isn’t his.” He smiles evilly and tells her she has no other alternative.

At the same time, Venus tells Cad he has twelve hours to give her an answer as to whether he’ll marry her or not and then shows him the door. He leaves dejected, minus the good-night kiss from his Loafly. Venus races to the phone afterwards and invites Martina out to dinner with her to give her the lo-down on what just happened with Cad.

Fr/Eduardo arrives at the Elizalde’s and says hello to everyone. Pris puts her eagle-eyes on Fer and Franco when he greets her. She watches as Fer politely smiles and tells him how grateful they all are that he’s come. Cad shows up just as the family gets ready to discuss the photo and ransom with Fr/Ed. He pulls Anyballs aside for a little tete a tete in the library.

In the taxi on the way to the restaurant, Martina tells Venus she’s actually lost her appetite since Lili vanished like that on her watch. Venus tells her that Lili won’t show up any sooner just because she stops eating. Martina says she’d like to have Obregon’s neck in her hands so she could squeeze his brains out [exprimir sus sesos]. Venus offers a few other choice wrestling options to consider also when they find him. (Lovely.)

In the library, Anyballs asks Cad what fool thing he’s done now. Cad explains how he went to see Santoro’s boss and says that things went so badly the only way out he has is to get married.

Back in the living room, meanwhile, Fr/Ed assures the family that he’ll do what he promised and will handle getting the ransom money for them. They’ll have it ready early the next morning. Gonzo thanks him for taking on the responsibility as if he were another member of the family. Babs gives Fr/Ed a disguised Evil Eye; Fer looks on with relief and Pris looks at Fer for some clue that she’s hot for Franco.

Meanwhile, over tacos and frijoles, Venus tells Martina that Estev gave her the go-ahead to give Cad that cock n bull story about a sensuality and eroticism school to whet the guy’s whistle and then to give him the 12-hr. ultimatum. Seemed to work she thinks. Martina wonders what his answer will be. “--He’ll either grin and bear it [apechugar] and marry me, or he’ll have to hit the road.”

Cad apparently wants to hightail it for parts unknown. Anibal can’t believe his brother would do something so imbecilic and leave the family in a financial bind like that, especially now that Santoro’s company is footing the ransom. (What did you expect, AB? This guy was born missing the responsibility gene.) AB tells his brother he’s essentially stuck in quicksand up to his eyeballs and sinking fast. Cad doesn’t want a scolding; he just wants a solution from his big bro who always has always pulled his chestnuts out of the fire. Unfortunately for Cad, he took the cheese and got his rat tail caught in the trap. The only answer Anyballs has is that, for the good of the family, Cadmilo has to get married. SNAP-CLINK! Our dear Cad, it seems, has finally been hoist by his own petard. Cara de ¡horror! for Camilo.

Gonzo tells Franco that he doesn’t want to risk Babs’ life by sending her with the ransom alone. He’d rather bring the police in on this. Fr/Ed says they cannot risk Obregon getting upset and running off again with Lili. Gonzo is slavishly indebted to his wife and Franco at this point. Fer swallows and bites her tongue as Babs swears to her lapdog of a husband that Lili’s life is more important, and that she’s willing to risk herself to get Lili back. “You don’t need to thank me, Vida. I’d make any sacrifice for our little girl.” Fer (along with the rest of Viewerville) can hardly control a spontaneous impulse to gag. Babs says the thanks goes to Franco for his financial support. Fr/Ed begs off and gallantly says it’s only money and nothing’s more valuable than Lili’s life. Therefore, the total amount of the ransom will be there for them first thing in the morning.

Anyballs rushes back into the living room with Camilo in tow at that point and makes a big show praising both Franco and Estev Norton’s show of solidarity in their moment of need. “One can never thank you enough, both you and Mr. Norton, for sticking by us. Er… uh…that’s precisely what my brother and I were talking about. Isn’t that right, Camilo?” Cad finds his tongue and joins in. “Yes, yes! That’s exactly right. Thank you very much!” Fr/Ed throws a frown of consternation in their direction.

Jardinera, loved the title of your smooth and clever recap.
Yes, I share the reservations of many commenters at the marriage games Estev and Fr/Ed are playing. Things are getting a little twisted as we are dragged further into the labyrinth.
Cad and Loafly are my fave couple right now. Cad is way, way out of his league with Venus (and Estev). I'm sure the male segment of viewerville enjoyed Loafly's demonstration of how well she learned the lessons at sensual school.
Yes, Vlad could get up off the floor and stop sniveling anytime now. Man up, Vladi!
Marg's little speech about the kind of love that stayed in your heart was sweet. Hope Jacinto and Marg will keep an eye on Denia.
La Paloma

Wasn't Esteve the one pushing Fr/Ed and Erika together all along? Now he's "concerned" about it? The plot just keeps getting goofier. Venus and Cad .. BLECH.

Thanks Jardinera ....

I think MEPS has reached the bottom of silliness and stupidity in its plot lines.

I think all of 2 minutes was spent on the main plot line of Eduardo vs Babs and Artemio Bravo.

I realize telenovelas aren't supposed to rival Shakespeare, but I had hoped that MEPS would at least approach the quality of the some of the telenovelas from other Latin America countries.

I guess we are forced to either watching this silliness until the Ultimas Semanas come along, or just leave and come back for Ultimas Semanas.

I can only imagine the writers (whether in Mexico, or the Colombian original) were told by corporate to extend the telenovela by xx episodes to sell more yogurt (or is that Chocolate milk that keeps popping up in placement ads?)

Silverfox

Jardinera, you did it again! Your snark is way, way better than the episodes lately.

I can't believe the stupidity of having TBLMOE portrayed as a ditzy ass who can't think straight without his gringo sidekick. Hello? Fr/Ed? Even if you think you can't have Fer, you might wait a while and see if someone you'd really care about turns up. Can't he even imagine years and years of giggling and having her draped over him like a boa in public?

Sendel is doing a great acting job. I absolutely despise him. His squinty little eyes, even if they are baby blue, are awful. Of course, it's going to be pretty hard to get the goods on Fer and Fr/Ed since he's colder to her than Antarctica.

Not liking the Cad/Loafly plot much. It seems to me this could have been a much better novela with just Fr/Ed trying to get revenge and save Liliana without the extraneous ridiculous wedding plans with Errorika and Esteve's dumb idea for Cad to marry Loafly.

I just stumbled upon a great site, particularly for the recappers struggling to decipher non-standard Spanish.

Diccionario Breve De Mexicanismos. Essentially a Mexican-dialect appendix to the RAE (though it's not associated with the RAE). It seems to be more scholarly and more complete than many.

I found it when I was looking for "épale," which does not appear in WordReference except in the forums.

Thanks for the recap Jardinera. Your title so captures this often frustrating episode. I'm with Novelera; they should dump the martial subplots. If you are going to show me romance, how about Martina and cute Dr. Carlos?

Thanks for the resource Paula!

Jardinera, another gem of a recap. Loved your sharing of your husband's and your enjoyment of Lovely's description of her specialty training. I had a very similar reaction. Poor Camilo, he is definitely in over his head. I found the shoptalk between the two mudwrestlers funny as well. Poor Camy. Does Franco's plan to wed Erica remind anyone else of a similar situation in DA? That marriage certainly worked out well, didn't it? Carlos

Thank you for the recap, Jardinera. Great tile, too!

I did not like that look, last night, on Fatal Attraction's (‘Denia) face.

Could FrEd look any less excited about getting married? Good grief.

I still think Vlad is going to do something off-the-wall crazy, before this ‘novela ends.

I'm also wondering just how popular Pura Sangre was in Colombia. MEPS is said to be sticking close to the plot. Surely this drove them mad, also.
Vidas Cruzadas may be our 'out.'

I am starting to worry that the only way Fr/eduardo gets out of his marriage and still remain the unstained galan is the death of Erroika. I just don't know who would have cause to do it, except Gardenia and I really don't like that option...

twiddle bug

i'm a relatively new devotee of MEPS. can someone tell me why Fer and Damien never consumated their marriage? whatever the reason, its probably to set them up for an ultimate annulment so Fer and Ed can hook up, with the blessing of the catholic church.

also, i think Ericas papas won't like FrEd much if and when they find out his parents were pobres... that will put the cabash on that matrimonio!

carolina

Carolina, they never consummated at first because Fernanda was too depressed about her nana's death.

Then FrEd and Esteve made him delay his honeymoon to go to Power Milk in NY. The fate of the family business hinged on this trip. Fernanda couldn't go with him because she had to be there to arrange a service for her nana, so Damian went there alone for a few days and nothing happened.

Then she was depressed about Eduardo's alleged death.

At the time, Damian bristled at Babs's suggestion that he take her by force.

Finally they were going to do it, but Lili (who came home to visit for a day or two before Babs scared her off) interrupted.

Just as they were ready to go on their honeymoon, Damian had to go into hiding because Babs framed him for stealing all the company's money. Then he came back, but she wouldn't sleep with him until he gave her an explanation, and that didn't happen.

Then Damian got shot and you know the rest.

Jardinera, does your husband understand any of the Spanish on his own, or do you translate it for him as you go? Either way, I'm glad he didn't miss out on the hilarity of Venus's "sex school" story.

Turns out "petard" was not quite what I pictured. I had always imagined some kind of pulley contraption. LOL.

La Paloma: I think I'm with you when it comes to Cad and Loafly. They are the ONLY thing going right now romantically worth the effort to watch. I like the novela overall, but last night's episodio would have flopped I think without their scenes.
=========
Silverfox: I also am disappointed that there isn't more going on between FC and SN who have wonderful chemistry when they're allowed to use it, but this novela has become too much mystery and not enough romance between the main couple for those of us who watch with that romantic connection to keep us going. Whenever they have to fill while waiting for another production to finish the current production always seems to drag unnecessarily. I hope it doesn't fall into the same abyss that FELS did. Ugh!
===========
Novelera: For me this exaggerated self-doubt with FC's character is a real downer and I'm losing sympathy fast. Like the hubster says: What's wrong with the guy? He's got a multi-million dollar inheritance and could leave the whole Elizalde mess in an instant and find many women anywhere else in the world he wanted to start over. As for me, I think he's the one who needs a few therapy sessions with Dra. Sotomayor. It wouldn't hurt for him to introduce her to Fernanda, either!

Jardinera~~~Thanks for that detailed account of a frustrating episode. Wow. Loafley looked loafly in that black Victoria's Secret number. However, I was focused more on that cute palm tree on the table. I think they made iot out of a carrot for the trunk and half a green pepper turned upside down for the palm leaves. So ...Tio Esteve sent Loafly to some School for Scandalous Behavior. Maybe it would have helped if she'd have told him her class rank. She could have impressed him by telling him that she was valedictorian or was voted Most Likely to Succeed. I am getting very tired of Fr'ed ...not FC...just Fr'ed. He has got to man up and do something proactive. Basta of the whining and whimpering . I need a hero.

Paula H: Thanks for the great resource. I've got to figure out how to work with it. It should come in pretty handy.
===========
Karen: I wished they would give us more of Martina and Dr. Carlos also. Maybe the original never did so either, and that's why they can't? Dunno, but down deep I just want this thing to speed up to at least some sort of reconciliation between Eddie and Fer. That's the reason we're all watching this thing, IMHO, to begin with. Err needs to get suspicious fast and maybe start a few fireworks of her own.
==========
Carlos: ITA that a marriage on the rebound and the reckless way Eduardo is barreling headlong into his with Err is muy mal. Could make for an interesting remaining few months, though and liven things up a bit more. Speaking of which, thank gawd for the Cad and Loafly scenes!
==============
Doris: I am desperate for Vlad to do something besides cry and grovel at Priscilla's feet. He's already strange. Maybe doing something strong and wrong for a change would help this sorry slug. He is the worst of "abnegado" writ large. --Funny how all these main male characters except for Estev and Jacinto are mewling babes this time around when it comes to their love lives. More Ric, Ric, Ric! as Susanlynn would say.....

Welcome twiddle bug and carolina! I don't think Err is slated to die because she's Fer's best friend and was the victim of a beating, per Silverfox's telenovela rules. ; > ) I think she may finally figure out the truth between Fr/Ed and Fer and break off things after a while. If we're lucky there'll be some fireworks from her before that.
===========
Carolina: Dolly will definitely have problems with Fr/Ed's origins. I don't know that Don Augustin would. Hubby seems to think Don Augie came from humbler means before hitting it big and that might make a difference in his world view, so to speak.

BTW, it seems Julie was able to answer your question. As always, if new viewers/bloggers have the time and are not aware of it, there is a link to all the recaps of each novela we've blogged on the left side of the Caray home page, in the orange column. It will take a bit of dedication to catch up that way, but I always found it to be worth it when I had to catch up with a novela I liked.
: ? ))

Susanlynn: like you always say - More Ric, Ric, Ric!!! That's my motto these days. What a bunch of woosies we've got this time around!!

Anyone notice the new end credits with all the kissing scenes? I wonder if those kicked in when they put a moratorium on "non-essential kissing" due to the swine flu.

About this everlasting onetruelove from childhood theme that runs through this novela [Ed and Fer, Jacinto and Marg, Gardenia and Ed ..even though it's onesided]--Yesterday we went to a mass reunion for grads of all years from our high school. A woman we knew who was about 5 years ahead of us in school came to last year's reunion and left with her high school boyfriend producing quite a scandal in our rural community !! She left her hubby of many years . [Her first marriage was to another h.s. beau and that lasted only a few years. I think it was a shotgun wedding. Her second hubby was the one that lasted for years.] Now, she's back to her original h.s. beau. When the photographer for the group pick asked if she was the guy's wife, he answered ''Not yet.'' So, maybe truth is stranger than fiction , and those ties from that first love are strong .

Julie~~~Perhaps , that's why there hasn't been any love scenes in quite awhile. I'd like an explanation of the difference between''essential'' and ''nonessential'' kissing.

Susanlynn/Julie: Essential and Non-essential kissing? I'm with you on that one, Susanlynn! Don't know if you saw the article in Cleo. The reporter and photographer were tracking with you, Susanlynn!

Watched the 1st side of Amarte es mi Pecado last night. It's pretty well chopped up, so it's hard to put all the pieces together.
I can't figure Isaura's relationship to the family.

So many people in it that we know

Padre Bosco MEPS
Padre Tadeo FELS, he looks good
Ciro MEPS
Jacinto MEPS, can't figure out his character
Margarita MEPS, Can't figure her out either & they already killed her off. She looked very different.
And of course Damian MEPS. Plays a good guy, but he does a better bad guy.

So much for purity before marriage. Arturo (Serfio Sendel) has knocked up 2 women, the one he loves & the one he marries. The one he loves becomes a high price hooker.

I wish they wouldn't edit so much that it lacks continuity.
We know they could edit 98% of Aurora & it wouldn't matter at all.

Do you know if it's in the blog archives?

Hello everyone, I am new. I only have time to say how much I am enjoying reading the recaps and comments (on topic and off). Carlos, I tried your corn casserole recipe. It was delicioso!

Sondie

Sondie: Welcome! Glad to have you along for the ride.

Tks Jardinera, I'll ck it out

Variopinta: If you're referring to "Amarte Es Mi Pecado", a bunch of us worked together doing straight summaries of each capítulo for the Telenovela-World blog. Here are the links to it done in two parts beginning with the Summary/Synopsis.

Part 1
http://foro.telenovela-world.com/~diane/amarteesmipecado/SumTW1.HTM

Part 2
http://foro.telenovela-world.com/~diane/amarteesmipecado/SumTW2.HTM

You'll possibly find some Univision ones done in Spanish also mixed in if I remember right. Just keep looking for the English ones. They are consecutive from June 14 on. That telenovela is probably my all time favorite.

Variopinta: Sorry, I reposted that comment with both parts as links for you.

Jardinera...let me echo what everyone else has set. Such a well-written, sardonic recap. The info on the "petard" was really interesting. also. I've used that expression for years and had no idea of the real origin of the expression.

Educated, amused and slowly recovering from double whammy of virus and dental implant surgery. Nice to surface and find this great recap waiting for me.

((Judyb))~~~Wow~~~Virus and dentalwork...I hope that you are feeling better. I'm sending you good vibes~~~~ I think you need an extra dose of FC to perk you up and get your motor running. Find some good scenes of Alborada or Amor Real on Youtube.

Hi everyone! Finally checking in! Wow, so many new readers/viewers. Thats great. Jardinera you have outdone yourself. I wasn't sure I heard Loafly right when she said she went to scool for that. How funny! I about snorted my tea across the room and choked on my pizza.

I bought Amor Real this weekend. Started watching it but it is really chopped up. I'll have to go back to watching an hour at a time. I seem to retain it better. Of course I'm going to read the recaps that everyone did to fill in the blanks. Not sure if I'm going to like FC in this one. He smacked Slofia a good one (but what else is new!) When she was talking to her mom I said "Oh, boy you'd better step back...You know what happened with Crabi!"

So how is Loafly going to get out of marrying Cad? I thought for a minute she was going to bodyslam him on the floor! (or maybethat was just wishful thinking!)

Connie - ITA that the DVD versions, whether 5-hour or 12-hour, always have that hit-and-run feeling to them. It is very difficult to condense 100+ hours of telenovela into 5 or 12. (I think Amor Real is a 12-hr one, isn't it?) But sometimes that is better than nothing. When I watched La Mentira on DVD, after the main climax halfway through, when the Mentira was 'outed,' I was bored and FFWDing through the rest of the 2 or 3 hours.

JudyB: didn't expect you back with us so soon. Petard is a fav phrase of the hubby. Thought I'd look it up myself and share. ? ; > )
==========
Connie: better late than never and I am definitely waiting for the bodyslam that Venus is certain to deliver. Maybe Martina will get in on the action too somehow. I'd love to see the expression on Cad's face if and when those two come after him.

Has anyone noticed that the character playing Erika may acutally be pregnant? I noticed it while she was with her mother preparing for the dinner with Franco, and again this episode. I was reminded of when Susan Lucci (Erica on All My Children) was pregnant, but her character wasn't, and the directors gave her props, like a coat, or handbag, or they framed her shots from the shoulders up, or had her stand behind a table, etc. Seems like the same thing is going on with Erika. When she was walking out after the dinner with Franco, he was holding her hand, but his arm was awkwardly in front of her belly. Just a thought...

Thanks, Jardinera!

Jane

Jane, that actress was indeed pregnant. We've been wondering how (or if) this will be dealt with in the story as she gets bigger and bigger. It would be interesting if they wrote it into the story, because people (like Fernanda!) might assume that Franco knocked her up shortly after arriving in town (it would have been right around the same time she was last with Camilo).

Jardinera, thanks for the great recap. It was much more interesting than the episode.

Julie, your scenario would certainly put a different spin on things. Anything is better than what the writers have been serving up lately.

rsk

Julie and Jane, what was really funny was that at the dinner Erika's father asked them pointedly if there was any reason why they had to get married so quickly, meaning, of course, if she was embarazada. Erika just laughed since, of course, she's never even had a proper kiss from Franco. But since the actress is quite obviously pregnant, it made the father's quesstion seem even more plausible. I found that amusing.

Connie~~~I watched the first side of the first dvd of Amor Real last night. I have seen the whole novela , so if you have any questions, I'll try to answer them . You're right...a lot has been cut out. Also, Manuel is not much of a hero at times in this one. There will be more pushing and yelling. However, he improves as time goes by. It's worth watching even though so much has been edited out. I think that Adela Noriego is very good in this one, and the chemistry between Adela and FC is smokin.' In my opinion, their chemistry is much better than FC/Lucero [Alborada]or FC/Susana Gonzales [Pasion]. Chantal Andere [Antonia] is a great villain. Enjoy.

That site really helped Jardinera & I see you did a lot of recapping there too.

The big problem that I had with not understanding was, as most people would, I started with disc 1, lado 1, but that was just before Alejandro's cat was poisoned. Lado 2 was the beginning.

Amor Real was the worst as far a being chopped. They even give you a 2 disc set, but the 2nd disc is only production stuff & bloopers. What a waste. It was enough that you would know it was a great novela however, but why not, FC
was in it.

Does Televisa ever repeat novelas on TV? Seems Amor Real & Alborada were so popular that they would be worth repeating.

That scene with Manuel in the tub & Antonia was smoking. ¡Dios mio!, ¡qué hombre!

Thanks guys for the Amor Real info. It only cost $9.99 so I guess you get what you pay for. I love the costumes but I wish FC's hair was longer. And is the brother of Matilda the guy who played Cristobal in Alborada. I really like him.

Connie, sí
Ernesto Laguardia.

Pasofino, you.uuu..u had me dying on the sidewalk: "I also wanted to point out that after FrEd handed his phone to Fernanda, he turned his back to leave and showed us a wonderful glimpse of his well developed shoulders and finely tailored jacket. I couldn't let that go without a comment.
Then, as he waited outside his office, his finely chiseled features reflected warm light and agony from within the depths of his soul. And, I don't ever read love stories either."
And Connie close behind with your your sincere sensitive remembrance: "Day 7 for Old Dude Down the Hill."
THIS is why I backup to read/print out stuff I miss when away!
Now I got to finish catching up and read Friday's episode. Be right back.

We might be on Day 8 now. I'm not sure. I've lost track of outfits. We should have some kind of memorial or something for the poor guy. At least we miss him!

There is something about Cristobal I really liked. I don't know if it was his voice or what. But I recognized it immediately. And Esteve is in it too.

Connie, I just have to say how much I agree about the actor Ernesto Laguardia. He is able to disappear into a role, becoming the character completely. He is never typecast and pulls off each role to perfection. In Amor Real he was a scoundrel that had a 180 redemption arc that was so moving and then he went on to play a priest so convincingly. I believe he lost weight to play Humberto, one of my favorite of all novela roles. I'm always hoping to see him on another show.

J.J.

Alborada was the first time I'd ever seen him. I thought he was awesome. He was one of my favorite characters in that show. I didn't recognize him until he spoke. I only know him with that funny mustache he had.

Ernesto was Esmeraldá's 5th husband in Esmeralda de noche vienes. I didn't recognize him & didn't find out until I had watched it & didn't have time to look at it again.

I'm another fan of Ernhesto Laguardia. I loved his relationship with Luis [''Hermano''] in Alborada. He helped everyone , and he was such a gentle, devoted husband. In Amor Real, he began as a villain who was easy to despise, but his reformation was wonderful and believable. The last novela I saw him in was Mundo de Fieras. He did the best he could with that weak role. I wonder if he's stopped making tns.

Jardinera thank you for the great job that you always do recapping the novela, I personally enjoy reading all the details describe.

I don't really care for the character of Loafly (why this nickname?), so all her scenes with Cad and Estive were always a drag to watch for me, but I'm glad that other people enjoy them, since I think they are being used to fill the number of episodes they added to the story.

I even prefer watching Aurora, since there was a point where her complete absence of common sense made me laugh.

I think Ernesto Laguardia is very cute, I loved him in the early 90's in Los Parientes Pobres when he used to follow Lucero around like a puppy all the time, it was worth it in the end when they finally got together. This is one of the few novelas where both leads were poor and never got rich at the end, ironically right now the only other novela that I can remember where this happened was in one of TV Azteca's productions starred by Silvia Navarro.

Anyway I really liked Ernesto and Lucero together:

Jarocha

Thank you Jardinera! You are a riot, as usual brillantly written recap.

I'm loving this telenovela still. I get bored with strictly romance TNs with all-evil female holding back the course of true love. ho-hum.zzz.zzz.zz. But I love a mystery! And comedy in the mix? Yah! I think even Barb has had comedic scenes in here. And even Cad was laughable expecially during his 'temptation' scene. I howled when she pushed him out the door with him too weak to put up a fight.
The mystery that held my attention was the crptic note in the chess piece which led to academic exploration. Some of my favorite memories of this telenovela thus far are the post-its car, Dr.O hiding behind the cross, and the dance. This has been right up my alley.

Jarocha, "Loafly" is just a riff on how they pronouonce Lovely.

So glad to have others who respect Ernesto's work. I'm going to check out some of his work that some of you mentioned.

J.J.

As someone else commented EdFr has that convoluted reasoning going on now as he talks himself into marriage with Erroika. But hasn't Fernanda done the same thing?
She admits she feels confused about her marriage when Erroika asked her if she wanted Damed to come back. This was earlier when he had desserted without a word. Then she refuses to make love but goes to that party allowing him to drool all over her in public...accept the time she spends crying in the bathroom because Franco misinterprets her situation with her husband. And she gets so off-balance because her friend wants to win Franco's heart but she promises her husband she will remain married to him. That's messed up thinking too.

I too love Ernesto! Cristabol was one of my favorites in Alborada!

Okay, if they decide to use the actresses real life pregnancy in the show, won't if have to be Cadmilho's since we know he is who she was doing at the beginning?

Bonnie Churros: For me there's a big difference between Fer and Fr/Ed's motivations and behaviors.

Fer is totally disgusted by Damian. Having felt that strong attraction to Fr/Ed, she has now realized in her heart of hearts that she only married Damian because (as she said one time) she had completely given up on Eduardo's ever coming back. She settled for Damian since her family approved and he was VERY attentive (per Barbwire's instructions).

But, NOW, she's feeling pushed to remain married since Fr/Ed has given her such a cold shoulder and announced his wedding plans. PLUS, there's the biggie of having married in a Catholic wedding ceremony. Even though she shudders when he's near, she feels she's married until death do them part.

Fr/Ed on the other hand has really behaved badly. He's lied to her about his real identity. At one point, with Damian MIA, he thought he'd win her over as Franco Santoro and was working pretty successfully on that one. But, once her charming hub returned, he switched that off like a spigot and got spitefully jealous. Seeing her at the party with Damn, he impulsively announced the engagement at the party and gave Errorika hope that he'd go through with the marriage. So junior high school.

In my opinion, Fer has behaved like an adult throughout, while I cannot say the same for the role they've written for TBLMOE.

Ack Molly! Talk about your Bad Seed.

Variopinta: In the old days (I've been watching telenovelas for 20+ years), Univision used to repeat popular telenovelas. Often, one that showed in the evening would be put on during the day. They seemed to have stopped doing that which I think is a shame because there are some great ones out there that are far superior to what we are now getting.

=======
About Ernesto Laguardia - I saw him years ago in a great historical TN - Alondra. Unfortunately the next one I saw him in he played a totally insipid character.

The actors can only work with the material the writers give them. I've been disappointed so many times at what a good actor can be reduced to in a bad TN.

Cristina CO

Ah, you hit the nail on the head Novelera "Till death do us part." I see 2 Dudes at the Bottom of the Hill. Hmmmm......

in defense of Fr/Ed.
Fernanda didn't tell him that Damian had returned, she owed him that. I think it was Jacinto that told him.

Variopinta, good point. But I think she would have told him except for the fact that all his calls to her came through when she was in the motel with Dam. And, then I think she had barely enough time to get ready for the party. But I don't really remember if she tried to contact him or return any of those multiple phone calls he made while she was with Damn.

"Fr/Ed on the other hand has really behaved badly."
novelera - LOL! They should name this telenovela, "Men Behaving Badly." (FrEd, Estif, Cad, Vlad, Dam, Gonzo, Dr. O., Artemio)

P.S. and add the departed Jairo to the list . . .

Julie and Anon 8:37 - Great thoughts on Erika's pregnancy. I'm glad I wasn't imagining things! But unless they plan on writing her out of the script, they'd better do something soon! Will Fr/ed have a night of indescretion? No, I guess it's too late for that. Anyway, the actress's name is Marisol del Olmo (I really had to hunt at IMDB because MEPS doesn't list her in the cast), and it shows she had a role in Pasion, which I didn't happen to watch, but maybe she's familiar to some of you.

Jane

Jarocha/Bonnie Churros: Glad you made it to the party.
======
CristinaCO: Welcome to the Friday recap site.
=========
Jane/Julie/rsk: Well, if Err is pregnant I guess she won't have to wear one of those stupid rubber bellies then and we probably will be spared the maternity halter tops ala Destilando.
==========
For what it's worth, I'm a fan of Ernesto also. He's not what I'd call a leading man presence on screen, but he is alway a commanding presence and I loved him in Alborada as the priest.

Ah, si, Marisol del Olmo was Jimena (Ximena?) on Pasion. Quite a change as last time she was more of a take charge, no-one-gets-anything-by-her kind of broad. She was one of my favorites on that show and I was all about her and Mario hooking up. My nephew was two at the time and he picked up on her little catch phrase "tan-tan" and used it as his nickname :)

Univision DOES rerun an older telenovela or two in the wee hours of the night, or at least they did for a long time. I don't know if they still do. Check your listings; maybe you'll find something of interest.

Yes, it's very difficult to remember Jimena from Pasion when you're looking at Erika. The one thing about Jimena that was a problem was her big mouth. Not a problem with Erika since she doesn't seem to know much of importance.

Yes, Univision is still running older novelas late at night (and they've done some recently in the day too). Contra Viento y Marea is currently running in the 1 am slot. They actually showed Amarte es Mi Pecado in that slot about a year ago. Unfortunately, they tend to cut when they rerun.

Mostly I read the comments, but today I have to leave one.....this is a remake of the novela Pura Sangre....I think that is your answer to the question of cousins having a child in this novela. Santi and Aurora's child would be of Pura Sangre....would it not? Her blood being Artes and Santi's being Gonzo's?
Just a thought that came to my mind while reading all your comments.
