MEPS, June 30th - We're Gonna Par-tay Like It's 1999

Thanks again to Julie for picking up the slack for me for the last two weeks!

Capitulo 96

From last night: Fernanda continues to interrogate Damian. Gonzo tells Anyballs that if he makes a scene at the party because of Damian, he’s gonna get it. Aurora’s has her cards read by the scary old witch who says this certain secret will be hanging over her all her life. Aurora says meekly wants to know if that has anything to do with all the weird stuff has been happening to her lately. La Bruja says it will continue to happen if she doesn’t reveal the secret. Wonder how much Babs is payin’ this lady? Witch says Aurora has to free the spirit and Aurora asks if it’s the spirit of Dominga. Witch wants to know who is Dominga is, and says that anything Aurora tells her stays in that room and if the old lady does tell anyone, the bad spirits will come back on her.

The Witch probes Aurora about her parents. Aurora gets spooked and runs out. Witch explains to Babs not to worry, because the girl will be back. Babs instructs the witch to squeeze ever last bit of truth out of Aurora’s soul.

Artemio Bravo is reading the news articles about the fire at the Big Cups Cantina and is mourning over Aurora’s supposed death.

Camilo comes in to gloat with Santi that he took his girl out for a horseback ride and wants to know where she is. Santi explains she left with Babs. Santi tells him they’re not going to the big party tonight and Camilo says that’s too bad, he wanted to dance with Aurora. Santi finally grows a pair and clocks the cackling Camilo, who swears to get him back.

Erika is preparing her jewelry for the evening when the maid comes in with bags for her that contain her lingerie for the evening. She giggles uncontrollably - she’s truly delusional.

Martina, Lili, and the newly made over Venus aka Lovely Norton, are giggling while playing cards. Venus is excited because Esteve is coming over to help her get ready for the party.

The high society and fashionable elite begin to arrive at Las Animas for the party. Esteve has done quite a job – the theme of the party is Arabian Nights. Fr/Ed is looking especially delicioso. Fr/Ed and Esteve greet an Ambassador and OMG, Fr/Ed is speaking English and is even more HOT – can it be possible for this man to get any HOTTER???? OK, focus Melissa, focus!!!!! Fr/Ed finally gives Steve credit for putting together a good party, but he’s surprised none of the Elizaldes has shown up yet. But, his supposed novia, Erika, and her parents walk in and Esteve and Fr/Ed greet them. Gardenia eyeballs Fr/Ed like a woman who hasn’t eaten in days (oh hell, so do I).

Just then Fernanda and Scumian show up and Fr/Eddie is not so happy and neither is Nanda. Gardenia and Scumian look quite pleased, though.

Martina comes into Lili’s room to talk to Lili (who isn’t there), but gets engrossed in the television instead. The show just going into a commercial is La Hora Pico which just happens to be produced by Carla Estrada. The completely obvious product placement commercial is for Losec – for stomach problems. Martina hopes her friend Venus’ stomach is okay because of her pre-party nerves.

Fr/Ed and Steve greet Nanda and Damian. Damian explains the whole thing was a terrible misunderstanding and Fr/Ed says he always believed in Dam’s innocence. Fr/Ed makes a big display of complimenting Nanda’s intelligence, and Dam makes a big display of kissing Nanda in front of Fr/Ed. Erika bounces in to say Hi to her BFF Fernanda. Nanda is jealous seeing Erika with Fr/Ed.

Aniballs and Gonzo are waiting for their women to get ready. Camilo will meet them at the party. Babs comes down the stairs looking regal in a black and white halter dress – Gonzo is impressed. Prisci’s upstairs on the phone with her brother and wants to know why he’s not going to the party. Rolando says he’s not going to give Anyballs the opportunity to embarrass and accuse him publicly of industrial espionage. Prisci feels guilty knowing she played a part in this.

Erika tells Nanda she’s glad she and Scumian have worked it out and says now they can finally have a honeymoon. Fr/Ed is happy to hear they’ve never actually been on a honeymoon, but in order to play along, he tells Nanda and Dam that Powhere Meelk has its own private island near Bermuda and they’re welcome to use it. Nanda is not lookin’ happy, but Erika says she hopes one day she’ll be seeing this island.

Aurora is knitting in her bedroom and remembers the words of the Old Witch. Santiago comes in with two fruity umbrella drinks and says their party has started. Santi wants to know what’s wrong with her. She says the house seems like it’s filled with memories. She asks Santi how Barbara came into Gonzo’s life – Santi seems stunned by this question.

The two couples have now moved to the bar. Fr/Ed excuses himself, but before he goes, Erika kisses him and Nanda looks perturbed.

Steve and Fr/Ed greet Gonzo, Babs, Anyballs, and Prisci. Fr/Ed tells them he’s glad they showed up, what with the all the anguish over the situation with Lili. Babs wants to know how Fr/Ed knows, and he says he spoke with Fernanda and she told him. Babs says she doesn’t want this information public.

Esteve is waiting for Venus to finish dressing and says her “date” hasn’t arrived yet, but he’ll be proud to accompany her. She steps out and asks how she looks, Esteve is smitten, but we don’t get to see Venus the Lovely yet.

Santi tells Aurora that he can’t understand how his father fell in love with Babs. Nobody was invited to the wedding and they know nothing about her. Aurora says she thinks Babs is weird and strange. She says she doesn’t understand why they call her La Hyena. Aurora wants to see photos of Santi’s childhood – he goes off to get them. Aurora picks up her knitting again when a door starts to creek open – she asks who’s there and goes to look, but the door slams closed and she’s terrified. She screams at the spirit to leave. Santi comes back and she tells him she thinks someone is in the bathroom. He goes to look and of course, finds nothing but the window open. He tries to calm her down. She realizes he doesn’t believe her – just like Babs said. They start looking at the pictures and she looks over her shoulders to see if anyone or anything is lurking.

Erika wants the dirt on Damian from Nanda, who has no patience for her friend, but explains anyway. Erika asks how Nanda feels about Damian now, Nanda admits she’s confused. Erika explains how affectionate Fr/Ed is with her. Damian shows up and takes Erika’s seat and Erika leaves to flirt with Fr/Ed. Damian comments on how happy Fr/Ed and Erika look. Nanda is miffed and excuses herself.

Fr/Ed and Erika stop to mingle with the Elizaldes. Babs wants to know if this is the first time Fr/Ed has been in love and he says yes.

Nanda’s alone in the bathroom and is a wreck, but tries to pull herself together.

Gardenia has come to see Jacinto and Margarita in order to give them the latest gossip.

Erika and Fr/Ed mingle with more guests.

Damian and Anyballs confront each other. Anyballs refuses to shake Damian’s hand and says he’ll be watching Dam’s every move. Dam asks Prisci what she thinks and then leaves to find Nanda. Anyballs wonders why Dam said that to Prisci – she feigns innocence.

Nanda is still in the bathroom and Dam knocks on the door and asks if she’s alright, people are asking if she’s alright. She’s not ready to come out yet and tells him to give her a few minutes.

Gardenia animatedly recounts to Cinto and Mags how Nanda showed up on the arm of Scumian, and Fr/Ed didn’t act like it bothered him at all. Cinto wants to know why she cares so much. Denia goes off on one of her rants. None of them can figure out if the police have been looking for Damian, how does he just show up at the party? I can’t even be bothered with this. FF>

Nanda finally comes out of the bathroom and she’s surprised Dam’s still waiting. He wants to know what’s wrong with her, when Babs shows up and asks what Dam did to Nanda.

Previews: Gardenia is convinced that now that Nanda is back with Damian, Fr/Ed will finally be hers. She’s shocked when she hears Fr/Ed present his “novia” Erika Astorga!

Thanks, Melissa, for the quick and helpful recap. Just one small thing--I think that Fr/Ed said he was surprised that the Elizaldes came because of the distress they felt about Lili, not Damian. And then Barbara told him that the family wanted Lili's situation to be kept quiet, and Fr/Ed agreed.

Hmmm...I should never try to write after midnight. The point I tried to make in my post was just that it was Lili, not Damian, that Fr/Ed mentioned.

Thanks Juanita! You're absolutely right and I fixed it.

Thanks, Melissa. Great recap! This is the party where almost everyone is completely annoying. Freduardo gets attacked by the green-eyed monster and starts a junior high school routine. He's way, way too nice to Scumian (love that name) and digs away at Fernanda with the honeymoon comments. Erika hangs on Freduardo like Spanish moss on trees in the Deep South, giggling wildly all the time. Barbara keeps digging at Freduardo about being in love with Erika, when she knows darn well he and Fernanda had something going. Any?balls gets in a little hissy fit. And Damian keeps groping Fer and grinning, trying to convince everyone that all is well for this loving couple. Yuck!

If I were at this party, I'd be way into the tequila by now.

And we didn't even get to see Venus. I really enjoyed Esteve's reaction to her, though.

Fernanda, though, was perfect. All her reactions were exactly right. She hated coming there with Damian, she's starting to hate being in the same room with him. As if things weren't already bad, Freduardo jumps jealously to the wrong conclusion and goes on the offensive. Dummy BFF Erika can't even figure out that her friend is hurting, she's so self-absorbed. I really felt for Fer trying to cover up her misery, mopping her eyes in the bathroom.

More Abora freak-outs (snore).

Thanks, Melissa, for the great recap. You posted it so quickly and it was only after 11 pm on the West Coast.

I am enjoying the par-tay so far. Fer's sighs and disdain for Damian are amusing. And you can feel the jealous rage emanating from Fr/Ed and Fer. Fer's breaking heart scene was great emotional acting. She's hopelessly in love with Franco.

I could have done without the lingerie and acid indigestion commercials. No way could Errika have squeezed into that bra and those panties that she draped over herself as she smiled at the camera. And her squeal makes me crazy.

I think Anyballs is in love with his madrasta....super creepy. The way he gazed at her as she was descending the staircase and his lingering look afterward was definitely not the way he looks at Pris. And Gonzo was gloating over Bad Barbie too. Ewww.

I'm ready for more fireworks at the party. GinCA

Thanks for the great recap, Melissa.

Two thumbs up for eSteve, who looked authentically American last night and even acted like one. (body language, etc.)

I also noticed the product placements (Ilusion, Astra Zeneca.... see, it worked!) and that the bra was too small for Erika. Her dress didn't even require one.

Also ITA with you about Anibal leering at Babs when she came down the stairs. Grossed me right out.

Have to admit Babs looked beautiful coming down those stairs with her hair up and that dress...

Gardenia is going to have another hissy fit, over Erika this time.

Well, Doris I must disagree, I thought Babs looked the worst she's ever looked on this show. All those weird ruffles! And her frizzy hair? On the other hand, Fer looked lovely and disheveled and wretched all at the same time. Her acting is growing on me.

Melissa: oh, si si si!!!!! Fr/Ed was muy delicioso last night, with the slightly unbuttoned shirt & oh, that smile...I'm melting! When he slipped in a little ingles, I went over the edge. Aye caramba, that man is
just
so
fine [sigh].

(apologies to our male viewers...the man just drips with sensuality)

Loved the diarrhea ad because it cleared up so many questions I had about plot lines that have been left to wither on the vine. Maybe the old man who was pushed down the hill by Babs is really in the can with a bad case of intestinal distress.

Errorika, honey, wake up & smell the Nescafe...he's just not that into you.

Poor Nanda. She did such a good job of conveying pain & anguish without over-emoting and buckets o'tears. I love the "don't touch me" vibes she's giving to Damn, although there's no way in hell I'd go to a mini mart with that slime bucket, never mind a big soiree.

Pris has a got a set of knockers that DDenia would envy. Carlos, any interest or does the goth look unsettle you?

Maggarita
(still raining...I can still FedEx to anyone interested, along with the mosquitoes & the mud)
:-D

Thanks for the recap Melissa. It was a great episode.

That dress Babs was wearing would have been ok if it didn't have those goofy ruffles down the front.

Nanda--beautiful. Loved the dress but wish it had more color. I felt sorry for her because she clearly was unhappy about Erika and about Dam. Every time he touched her it made my skin crawl.

I love the way Dam got Erika to stand up and he took her seat. How gentlemanly of him. Ack!

Was disappointed that we didn't get to see Lovely but I guess they are dragging it out.

Where was Lili? Did she fly the coop?

Anyballs--I noticed that leering grin when he saw Babs--Ewwwww!

AnyBalls is such a loser. Without Gonzo's $$, he'd be a cashier at Piggly Wiggly & married to Tonya Harding. He seems like the type who's never happy & wants what everyone else has...hence the squicky drool scene with Mom.

Of course, NaranHo is an even bigger loser than his brother. What a cackling idiot. I can't wait to see karma wipe that smile off of his Tropicana face.

grrrr
Maggarita

I was clapping when Santi popped Cadmil-Ho a good one! That was awesome. I hope he does it again.

It irks me how some of the actors have to behave like idiots because they're playing the roles of 20 something characters (except for Santi and Aborea). The squeeling, jealousy and jumping around are hard for me to swallow when I'm looking at +35 year old person behaving like that. I have to remind myself that these are actors who are playing the roles of younger people who might act that way. But still...,

Fernanda seems to be the only mature one of the bunch.

I thought that Santi's drink might help Aborea relax and loosen her up and she'd tell Santi all about the haunting, but she didn't finish the drink.

Can't wait for tonight's episode.

~Caborita

Tough night. Silvia Navarro is way too good an actress...I was just dying during her stress scenes in the bathroom. She really conveyed the sense of being trapped, miserable, confused, miserable, jealous, miserable, exhausted, miserable...ay yi yi.

And those product placements!!! Yogurt on Monday, now lingerie and digestive crap on Tuesday. Puh-leeze. An insult to both the actors and to us.

At last, though, an answer to what's up with Anyballs. He's lusting not only after his father's power but his father's concubine as well (I refuse to call that witch his wife.)

Thought both Priscilla and Barbara look better with their hair in the everyday style. Thought all the coiffures were a bit fussy and odd. And WHERE DID ALL THOSE PEOPLE COME FROM?...oh well.

On the other hand, Esteve looked much better with his hair brushed back and in a suit. There's hope.

Good to have you back, Melissa. Thanks for the great and super-speedy recap.

Kind of a fun episode, me with tequila at hand. Interesting party, quite a parade of guests. Esteve looks especially dapper, but I was wondering a bit about Eddy's "casual" open collar when all the other guys were wearing suits. It's his party. Denia was looking very fine, sorry girls.

Judy described Fer better than I could, Sylvia is doing a stellar job; perfect, believable performance. I can't wait for the party to heat up!

When Martina came in to the room and Lili wasn't there, I thought that her absence was to be the point of the scene, not an opportunity for flagrant product placement- how utterly weird. BTW, Martina, where is Lili?

Abora, what a timid, stupid little bird you are. Why have the writers made her such an insipid, whimpy character, runs out of the non-threatening (to me at least) session with la bruja when asked a question that she, herself, wants the answer to. She trusts and believes Babs, after what she's seen of her. I can't help but feel that they will develop her into something a little more sympathetic. Please?

Thanks for the recap. Melissa!

Melissa, you are really on top of your game today.

"...can it be possible for this man to get any HOTTER???? OK, focus Melissa, focus!!!!!"

You had me cracking up.

I was a little disappointed by most of the hairdos and outfits. Erika's dress was pretty and flattering. Lose the ruffle and Bab's outfit would be stunning. Pris' gown looked like it was made from the curtain on the stage of the old Capitan Theater in Pasadena. Nanda's was OK. I expect Lovely to be...well...lovely.

Carlos

Thanks for the recap Melissa.

Omigod, could the writers have created more tension with Fr/Ed and Nanda?? It was as if every nerve ending in her body was coming out the top of her head! Navarro did an extraordinary job of conveying the extent to which Nanda was freaking out. Haven't we all been in some similar romantic situations? Talk about a triangle fest!

Priscilla, you look fabulous without the lame beer can bangs. Lose them forever, please!

I don't think Rosenda the curandera is necessarily in Babs pocket. There's whole lot of truth in what she says: "Give up the secret", but the person she needs to give it up to is Santi, not la vibora/hyena.

Dona Gringuita

Thanks for the recap Melissa.

I wonder what did happen to Lili? I'm thinking she is on her way to the party. When they were talking about the party, I figured she was thinking, "I'll go to the party, too.".

Since Barb is supposed to bring the Elizaldes down, I think it would be a good idea to get Fer to try and hook up with FrEd. Especially, now that Dam has been cleared, it would be good to have Fer get caught with FrEd. Ah, the escandalo that would be, married woman fooling around with someone else. Yeah, that would be the way to go. :)

And we got a couple of commercials, one actual commercial on TV! What was the deal with that one??

And what's with Aurora Boreallofus? She appears to have forgotten about the time she saw Barb and Dam together! Get a clue or at least a vowel!

JeffMN

Thanks, Melissa~~~I taped this episode and something happened that made it almost impossible to see what was happening, but FC's hotness still came through loud and clear. I want to teach him English. It's my fantasy. Carlos~~None of us can FOCUS when FC is on the screen. That animal masgnetism pulsates right through the airwaves. The quality of taping was so bad that I missed all the wardrobe disasters. They certainly are teasing us about Miss Lovely , verdad ? Esteve seemed smitten. Error's squealing is getting on my last nerve. What is she...fifteen ?? Basta. Also, what exactly is the purpose of Fr'ed's announcing Error as his fiancee ? Que the hell is that supposed to accomplish. Why can't Fern just tell Dam not to touch her ? Fr'ed reaction reminds me of Alborada ...Luis was incensed at the thought that Hippolita was sleeping with her husband.

Jeff, I thought that maybe Lili would try to get to the party, too. It might happen. That would be muy, pero muy interesante...

Melissa, you are the greatest, staying up late to get the recap done! Thanks again.

A lot of good comments today, I'd like to add a couple. Nanda should have called FrEd to let him know she was coming with her HUSBAND. FrEd has been very good to her sister, bailed out the family business and has been completely devoted to her, he deserves better. She was really good in the bathroom scene, I agree!

I'm beginning to wonder about Santi, he must have a major caregiving personality to always be helping and propping up Aurora. I must say that Aurora does seem to have Babs's number, she isn't entirely sold on her, calling her "mysteriosa" , and as far as I can remember she is the first one to ask probing questions about the beginning of the Gonzo/Babs courtship.

rsk...any thoughts that your son has on the cable wires is appreciated!!

Sandy in TN

I'm thinking that the somewhat odd, less than stunning garb worn by the women is done with the intention of not upstaging Lovely's appearance. They want her to be the clear winner in the fashion show. I hope that they don't fail us, and make her stunning....

Jeff, I also thought about Lil going to the party but couldn't picture how she would get there. Of course, in the magic world of TNs I suppose that wouldn't be such an insurmountable problem.

The drug ad was fascinating. Losec is the same as Prilosec here. When it was first introduced here it debuted as Losec but soon after the name was changed because pharmacists were misreading Rxs for it as Lasix, a diuretic. Imagine that, pharmacists having difficulty reading Drs.' handwriting. I thought it was curious that Martina became so enthralled in that commercial. A similar thing happened with the same product in Destilando Amor. Must be a good market for heartburn drugs in Mexico.

Carlos

Good point DD. I bet you are right.

So what color is Lovely's dress going to be? She would be beautiful in an emerald green I think.

Thank YOU for letting me fill in, Melissa. It was fun!

It's funny, but I was thinking "I sure hope someone punches Camilo soo-" just before Santi took a swing!

I agree, hearing all that English from TBLMOE was hot. End Esteve was funny when he saw Venus. He said all these different words... I half-expected to hear a "va va va voom."

Also funny, seeing Erika kissin' on FrEd like that, because he didn't really respond much or initiate any kissing himself, did he? If only Fernanda would notice!

I find most product placement ads only slightly annoying, but I don't consider showing an actual TV commercial IN THE SHOW to be a placement ad. That's just a regular ad. Very obnoxious. Don't want to see that again. As for Lili, I figured she was in the bathroom, but maybe she did sneak out. Maybe she'll show up at the party in her new pink vinyl coat.

So, are we to assume that ghosts pee? Why else would the ghost close the bathroom door, but for privacy? Seems like a good time to catch the ghost with its pants down, as it were.

By the way, I've been wondering: is Camilo in on the ghost thing? At first I thought he was, but maybe Babs isn't letting him in on this part of her plan. I know that if I were Babs, I'd share as little with that dope as possible.

I did not like Babs's dress. I agree with DD's theory that they're toning down most of the women so that "Lovely" will look that much better. Honestly, though, I did not even notice what Fernanda was wearing because I couldn't stop looking at her hair. I like it that way. Pris's is improved too.

Dona Gringuita, I don't think Rosenda would have given Babs that status report if she wasn't in Babs's pocket.

Rosenda promised Aurora that anything she said would be confidential, but moments later she was assuring Babs that all would be revealed soon. That seems like an in-pocket conversation to me.

No doubt Babs solicited the woman specifically for this purpose. What I want to know is, WHERE does she find these people? Rosenda is like the least convincing psychic ever. She's pushy and she asks way too many questions! Which I realize is the point, but damn, could she be any less subtle?

I second Connie's vote for a green dress on Venus, or some other jewel type of color.

However, Esteve seemed to be pushing for a shock factor... I hope he didn't go with vivid red. Too cliche.

And I hope there's at least a little bit of "Venus" left in "Lovely"!

Can anyone clarify: Doesn't Erika think she's supposed to be making Franco's "real" girlfriend jealous? Shouldn't she be looking around for her? Or is that that plotline over?

Maggarita, are you sure you don't write for Conan or David Letterman...the old man in the can with intestinal distress and Anyballs working at Piggly Wiggly and married to Tonya Harding. ROTFL!

Wasn't Lili in the shower while Martina and we were subjected to that awful Losec commercial. Having Lili appear at the party would require a disguise and she surely would blurt out EDUARDO.

I also thought I heard Fr/Ed announce Errika as his fiancee in the promos. He definitely is not the brains behind the scene. He'll have to listen to Errika's squeal and her hanging on him like Spanish moss (thanks Novelera) for eternity. Fr/Ed even wiped off one of her kisses. GinCA

Hope the dancers don't drink too much tequila & fall off the dance floor, it has 3 levels.

I do not understand why Fr/Ed has no tie & for an event like this! Except for obvious casual times he always wears a tie. But he's delicious no matter what he has on or better what he doesn't have on, drool.

Loved the "nice to meet you ambassador". I think FC has to struggle with inglés, but he practiced a lot, it was very good.

I gain more respect for Silvia Navarro the more we see her. The pleading for understanding look she had with Fr/Ed, which of course didn't register with him, he is so jealous, he doesn't see the other persons pain. Fantastic expression.

I thought Babs looked fantastic, dress, hair & all. Wasn't too thrilled with Fernanda's dress. Thought Erika looked good. Now for Lovely, Esteve is impressed.

Aurora tells Rosenda about Dominga, but Rosenda doesn't pass that on to Babs. Aurora is beginning to ask questions, just curiosity or is she actually beginning to THINK?????

Babs is going to be in a heap of trouble when Artemio finds out Aurora is alive & has been living the same house.

Melissa, thanks for a great recap. I am right there with you on finally hearing Fr/Ed speak English! Holy cow! I was so bummed I didn't tape last night it went by so quick.

I though Erika's dress was a great color, but not very flattering. Nanda has the best hair, but that dress was just to drab.

Can't wait to see Lovely, and I hope people continue to punch Camilho in the face!

I 3rd the vote for emerald green on Lovely.

I was wondering why Rosenda was asking so many questions, but she is a card reader.

I have to keep remembering that Erika told Fernanda that there is another woman that Fr/Ed wants to make jealous & I think Fernanda is forgetting also. I believe that Erika will think the other woman is Venus, uh Lovely.

Great recap Melissa.

I agree with Melanima that Bab's hair looked awful and I wasn't crazy about her gown either. I couldn't make up my mind about Fer's hair. I think it was too tousled looking for my taste. Also, her gown didn't do much for her. What was she wearing when she walked in...??? She looked all bundled up. Now Erika's gown I liked. By the way she did have a bra on. Probably not the small one she showed to the camera. In the back of her gown I saw what looked like bra straps

Can't wait for Lovely. I hope she looks better than that green dress with the leopard bra showing.

Ann - NYC

.

I don't get the whole bra strap showing thing. I think it looks tacky. Back in Jr High and High school we would have been mortified if our strap was showing. Now they do it all the time.

I liked Fernanda's hair. I have yet to achieve the put up with one clip touseled hair thing. I just look like I didn't brush my hair that day.

Regardless the color of VenLov's dress, I'll bet that she has cleaned up muy, muy bien...

Thank you for the recap, Melissa.

Maggarita - you kill me! My office mate was hoping whatever had me laughing so hard I fell out of my chair was funny enough to share.

They definitely appear to be insinuating that AnyBalls has a thing for his madrastra. Remember how he took the blame for her on ratting out Dumian to the police?

Did anyone else think it seemed a bit akward the way Fr/Ed was greeting some of the 'random party guests' with friendly recognition? I didnt think he'd had a whole lot of free time to make himself known in local high society.

Looking forward to seeing Lovely. But then, what girl doesnt love a pygmalion. -Liliana

Agree Sylvia is one heck of an actress until it comes to the romance scenes. She just looks muy, muy awkward and stiff with Fr/Ed ... and it's every, single time, like she doesn't know how to stand or move. Don't think we're going to get the good amor scenes at all in this one.

Loved Barbie's look. I thought she looked stunning coming down the stairs. Fer looked frumpy, sort of like "let's spiff up the brownie dress" ... all that drab brown. Hair not so much either. But then her appearance did go with her mood.

Question. I think maybe I blended two episodes in my mind based on other comments here. I thought I saw Lili and Martina playing chess last night. It looked like Lili was teaching Martina what Ciro had taught her. But many of you commented she was missing last night. Was that Monday?

Also, yes, I noticed the look Any?Balls gave Babs. It was a great ah ha! moment.

Of course they aborted Abora's reveal of Rebeca Sanchez to Rosenda. They have to drag it out some more and give us lots more spooky scares for our slow witted crippled bird.

Thanks for the recap Melissa and welcome back. I haven't seen the episode yet and can't wait to hear Fr/Ed speak English.

Babs,Fernanda,Priscilla and Erika looked smashing. Priscilla looked more radiant than normal and I like looking at her dress. ;) :)

I love seeing Gardenia too. **Big Grin** At last the party has started. How long will it last?

Lol at the females here also noticing Anibal checking out Babs. Yeah buddy. reminds me of my younger years where some of my teammates were checking out other player's moms at home. ;)

i'm surprised everyone including the honored guests treated Damian's sudden appearance nonchalantly. you figure a known fugitive would attract a lot of attention.

Ibarramedia

Did you see in the coming attractions how much Aborea all made up looked like La Hiena? La Hiena looked like she saw a ghost when she saw Aborea that way.

Carlos,
You are strangely quiet on Gardenia today. Did you like her dress? I thought she looked pretty, at least she chose to be a little more modest, mucho decolletage at the party.

For the most part, given the odd ensembles the characters have been wearing, they all looked pretty good in their dresses.

Did I see a flash of aqua in the previews on Lovely?

Sandy in TN

I thought Priscilla looked great. Her hair looked nicer swept to the side than in its usual severe style.

Erika, after all her fuss about finding the perfect outfit, picked something that made her look pregnant. She was wearing a bra, but the straps were clear or beige; it wasn't the saucy little number she ordered.

It was nice to see Esteve out of sweats, but I thought his suit looked too shiny and like it didn't fit right.

Fr/Ed, of course, looked perfect.

I'll put in an nth vote for Lovely in green...although I think a blue or greenish blue would also work very well on her.

I think Fernanda's blah outfit and hair perfectly suited her mood.

Yeah, I noticed Esteve's sleeves were too short. Maybe that's the gringo style. Or maybe he's wearing his best hooded sweatshirt under his good shirt and coat.

Hi anon 02:36,I didn't see Aurora all made up in the avances, but I did notice that one of the bumps (in or out of the commercial break) featured that old scene from Fernanda's wedding when Aurora and Hiena first met. Aurora was wearing a borrowed dress from Fer (much nicer than what Fer usually wears!). Was that maybe what you saw?

Sandy, thanks for asking. Gardenia was rather demurely dressed but stunningly radiant. I loved how she looked standing next to Eddie like that was her proper place, beaming that infectious smile. She was definitely in her element. I was puzzled by her apparent need to update Jacy and Maggie with that newsflash about Damian. I would have bet that once in place she would have stuck to Eddie like a Postit note. Her outfit might not have been as costly as some of the others but she certainly did it justice.

Carlos

Melissa, I am with you 'HOW can he be any hotter'! And to have him in a cold rage is even hawter. (Excuse me gentlemen.)
I was feeling with Fern too. Excellent expressive scene holding onto a pillar in a bathroom, trying to hold herself together. Not possible Fernanda. This is not your night for fun and play at a party. Should have accepted that phone call.

Santiago is going against the grain using physical violence. And he doesn't seem to recognize how injured Abore is by her childhood. This is not going to be a fun engagement for him either.

Carlos, and others, I agree with you. Gardenia did look absolutely lovely in that blue dress. Regarding people wondering if she'd serve or be a guest, it appears she was a guest.

DDenia didn't stay very long. I couldn't figure that out.

Connie, maybe the need to gossip was killing her!

Julie and Julia...on Steve's clothes, it isn't so much what he wears, it is the fit. It is as though his wardrobe was bought for another actor and they just made him wear it as a cost cutting measure. The cut is wrong on almost everything.

Carlos, yes, very strange that Gardenia would leave the party to chat about Damian when a phone call or just waiting would have been fine.

Sandy in TN

Yes, Denia didn't stay long, but looking at avances, she is back at the party after be the little chismosa. Shades of FELS, where the heck is everything located? Gardenia doesn't seem to have transportation, yet she is able to get to Cinto's and then back to the party without breaking a sweat?

Or a nail!

Juanita, thanks for such a timely interesting recap. I ditto all the remarks about Fers acting skills - great!! I must be a ruffle freak because I loved Barbs dress. I grew up on Gimble's and Macy's clothes. So, sometimes when I see high fashion designer clothes, I don't take to it right away. Kinda like those high fashion models wearing one of a kind designs. To whoever feel that Fer isn't acting pasionate enough with Ed, don't forget that she's wrestling with the fact that she's a married woman. Yes, the actors are a bit old for the ages that we the viewers have assigned them. But I feel that for all the good that I get out of the show I can put up with a lot of the behavior that's contrary to reality. In fact, sometimes when it dawns on me that in my opinion Ed can do wrong,I have to remind myself that I'm acting 15 years old just like Erika. The only thing that's missing is the high pitched screaches. But then again if I were next to him I don't think I could control myself. Especially if he shows no signs of objection to my affections. One last comment, I notice there are a lot of negative comments about the ads. Would someone please fill me in why is that annoying? (I mean that sincerely, don't someone have to sponsor these novelas)?

Novelera: "It looked like Lili was teaching Martina what Ciro had taught her. But many of you commented she was missing last night. Was that Monday?"
Lili was teaching Martina chess last night. Later Martina was looking for Lili and as far as I know didn't find her. That was when Martina (and we) stopped to watch the commercial on TV. So, is there any significance to Lili disappearing for a bit?

JeffMN

Denia was definitely a guest, not domestic help, certainly not helping host. De todo acuerdo con Carlos on her radiance. Her dress was appropriate for her station in life- she doesn't have the finacial resourses to get totally decked out the the rest of the ladies. The quick trip to Jacinto/Marg's was odd, tho. I think that she knows that the "relationship" between Eddy is a farse, Fer is with Dam, yet she skips out, making an opening for an interloper. Of course, we know she is going to get slammed by the news of the engagement. Tonight should be fun...

I wonder what sort of snacks Esteve has arranged. I'm getting hungry. Maybe shrimp with a chunk of white cheese and an Jalapeño wrapped in bacon and grilled like at Los Arcos in Tomball. Maybe some chunky guacamole, and of course some crafted cheeses. Man can't live by Tequila alone.

Carlos

HI Beth, we are not criticizing the fact that there are ads - it's the ads that are IN THE SHOW we are objecting to, ie egregious product placements written into the story.

I'm with you Jeff. Where the heck is everything located? I was a geography major in college and NEED to see a good map with a compass, a scale and little flags. Jacinto seems to do a lot of huffing and puffing on his bike to reach Las Animas but as you say, DDenia skips over and back and looks fresh and clean as a daisy.

Perhaps the actress playing Errika is really pregnant as she's heavier than when she appeared in Pasion and she does seem to have a tummy even in that pink bathrobe. GinCA

I really liked Marisol del Olmo in Pasión as Jimena. As Erika a little too exuberant, but I think she is very pretty with cute dimples. Too bad the writers make her look foolish.

You know what it was that I didn't like about Babs's dress - I don't like ANY dress with that kind of neck, that goes around the back of the neck (halter-style, is that what it's called?) instead of over the shoulders. I think it makes a woman look like she has awful posture or a hunched upper back, even if she's perfect.

It's just an optical illusion and apparently I am the only person on earth who even sees this, so it's probably just my imagination. :-) I just prefer dresses that go over the shoulders (even if only spaghetti straps). Or even just one shoulder. But not around the neck. Personal hangup. Silly, huh?

Julie, you are correct in your observation regarding halter dresses. I a going to design school and we were taught that one of the pitfalls of those types of dresses is what you described. It's not a good look for most mature women. The way she walked down the stairs was like she was some goddess decending upon earth. Made me chuckle.

~Caborita

As Babs descended the stairs, I wondered if she'd fall down them someday.

Pris seems the most likely candidate for a spill, though, since pregnant telenovela characters lose the ability to climb stairs properly.

(A few weeks ago on General Hospital, TWO pregnant women fell down the same flight of stairs which was also the site of a runaway baby carriage... amazingly, no one was seriously hurt. "When Stairs Attack")

I thought it looked like it was choking her, Julie. I didn't like it either.

First post for me.
I've been watching since the boda.
My spanish is minimal but the TN is helping alot and the recaps are making it all work for me. Thanks for the great recap Melissa!

I noticed a weird slip up during the second segment. Erika introduced Esteve to her parents as the amigo of Eduardo. Oops. Didn't she mean Franco?

I didn't like Barbara's dress. Reminded me of a black sausage with whipped cream on top.
Erika and Gardenia looked great, though.

Like someone said above... where did all those people come from?

AmyK

I really think Babs looked perfect for her station in life. Being the wife & madrastra she should dress the part. Lucero would probably outshine everyone if she wore a revealing dress. I thought she looked very classy. Just hope Lovely does the same.

It's not how Fernanda is playing the romantic scenes .. her skittishness is approproprate for the role now. It's the scenes they show interspersed when they lead to a commercial or are coming back from one. Those look so stiff and unnaturally staged. I'm assuming we'll see them down the road in the show? Silvia in those scenes (not Fernanda) looks awkward. I'm not sure I'm making sense here.

Priscilla really looks beautiful in her dress. Her assets also shine through. i thought Babs Really looked good. i'm anxious to see what 'Lovely' Norton looks like in her dress.

Anibal having a milf moment was totally priceless. To those who don't know what it means, I won't spell it out here. I might get in trouble. ;) Look it up. :)

Ibarramedia

AmyK- I just checked scene 2- Erika DID say "Eduardo"! If your Spanish is minimal, your ear is very well tuned! Great job!

I just watched the rest of scene 2. Lili must be in the bathroom, Martina was talking to her down the hall, not MIA like I thought she might be. I didn't catch it last nite. And the MILFman Any?balls leering at Babs was funny.

Make that "would be" MILFman Any?balls.

GinCA.....Yes, Marisol Del Olmo was pregnant during the filming, she learned about a month into the novela that she was expecting.
Marisol gave birth to a Baby boy on June 24th.
I know personal stuff on the actors is not allowed on this blog, but I thought I would respond anyway.

Melinama, I'm really not trying to beat a dead horse but I'm still not clear on how "they" get away with inserting advertisements if it's not "legitimate". Are they sponsors of the novela or merely paying the company to advertise their product? Or is this something that's just annoying to us viewers, sort of like going to commercial break just as something exciting happens? Someone mentioned that Santiago advertised bottled water the other day and that too went right over my head as far as the inappropriateness of it. Thanks for any clarification.

Melissa, thanks for the great recap and also to all the clever commenters.

Oh my, almost time to get back home for the rest of the party. I wondered why Fr/Ed wasn't wearing a tie, but we know he can wear anything he chooses and we still love him.

Barb's hair? Too crunchy looking, but I liked it pinned up. Dress was better without the jacket.

Fer's dress seemed a little blah, and her hair a little messy, but ok. She was excellent during the bathroom suffering scene. How many people can recall their own personal version of that?

Enjoyed Esteve's overwhelmed reaction to Lovely's appearance. Hope we get to see her tonight.

I was distracted by the overall party setting, trying to figure out just where at Las Animas was that gigantic room? The swooping silk streamers were ok, but the glitter outfits worn by the serving staff (including the DJ) were a little goofy. The turbans weren't impressive enough.
La Paloma

Wow, Amy - good catch on hearing
"Eduardo"!! (I wonder if that was in the captions and I missed it there too?)

Anon 5:59, aren't some of those scenes with long hair Fr/Ed so maybe shot before the show really started and the actors didn't know each other very well?

Beth, I will speak only for myself: What annoys me about product placement ads is that they jolt me out of a scene that I'm trying, sometimes with effort, to be absorbed in.

I can certainly live with normal commercial breaks - I know everybody's got bills to pay. And it's only mildly distracting if someone just waves a product at the camera. However, when they actually have a conversation about the product, then for me it's as if the sponsor has hijacked the entire scene.

For them to actually show one of the characters watching a commercial on TV in the middle of a scene, that was just tacky beyond belief. Like they gave up even trying to find a casual way to work it into the script.

I guess it's just their way of letting us know that they can shove an ad down our throats whenever they want to. (Urp, now I need an antacid.)

It can be difficult enough to maintain "suspension of disbelief" when watching a telenovela. The last thing I need is for these characters to suddenly turn into the sponsors' hand-puppets, yammering about their mail-order panties and drinkable yogurt and heartburn medicine. (Note that Martina was in her Medical Expert Halloween costume at the time. Yes, that gives the whole thing a much-needed air of authority.)

As for the business side of these ads, yes, it's legit; they pay the studio to embed the ads within the show. That's distinct from regular advertising, where sponsors pay the broadcast network or local station (not the studio) to run ads during breaks.

I can't take complete credit for catching the Eduardo/Franco slip. I was rewatching on YouTube and saw it in one of the comments. Then I watched it and confirmed for myself.

In other news, I visited the local Univision offices/studios last week. The marketing director told me that MEPS was the top rated show in the San Francisco Bay Area all last week (2 weeks ago). That's top rated of all shows, irrespective of language. It made me feel good to be part of the happenin' thing.

AmyK

I read some article about product placement in movies. The writer was on a real rant about it. It seems it's quite common for companies to pay big bucks for their soda, beer, whatever to appear in a scene with, say, John Travolta or Brad Pitt. I'm usually oblivious to it, but it is pretty crummy when you think about it. Paying close to $10 or maybe more depending on where you live and then, on top of that, the studios get this extra, sneaky money.

AmyK, I'm one of those who think that MEPS is a fantastic novela. The down side for me is that this is my first novela (actually I saw one other many, many years ago.) I'm afraid I've been spoiled and everything else will pale by comparison.

~Caborita

Melissa: You never disappoint. Great recap. I'm late to the party, but ditto about the drably dressed Babs. Reminded me of a chocolate ding-dong with the white filling all squished out at the end.
=========
Anyballs apparently does like the ladies. Creepy, but then I got to thinking: isn't Babs just a few years older than him according to the storyline? She'd have been in her very early 20's and he was finishing up college when the story began. A definite "ah-hah!" moment, I agree.
==========
Errorika made a definite mistake with that dress. Nice enough, but just not for her.// I thought Silvia was fabulous at relaying the miserable, trapped, asphyxiated feeling Fernanda was suffering through, and realizing that the evening was just beginning was just soooo much torture for her. The jealous barbs Fr/Ed kept shooting her way because she came with Damian were priceless. Loved those.

Amy, you didn't have to come clean about the "Eduardo" slipup, we'd have never known, but it speaks to your character. And thanks for the SF ratings info, I had no idea that this is such phenom.

Product placement- doesn't bother me in the least. It is a way for the producers to defray some of the costs of production, or make some profit- so what? They aren't doing this just for our entertainment, there hes to be a financial incentive for making the effort. Also, it's their gig, they can do what they want. If I don't like it, I can just hit a button, and I'm somewhere else.

Beth, I commented on this earlier but you and Melinama have put it in a little different perspective. As a physician I disdain any drug advertising, although I dislike Rx only drug ads. That said, I don't mind product placements so much. In fact who of us who watched Destilando Amor wouldn't love to be able to purchase Ardiente Pasíon? As to the ad in question(Losec) , that scene with Martina distracted, may be pivotal. What if we lose Lil because of an acid blocker commercial? Carlos

I meant to say that I particularly dislike Rx only drug advertising onTV. DDave, you perfectly expressed my thoughts on the matter. Thanks. Carlos

Melissa, thanks for the clear recap, very excellent. I just returned and am ready to recap tonight's episode. Funny that 3 weeks later, I am in the midst of the party that has been planned for so long but it is a great vehicle for staging the maximum interaction with the maximum number of characters.

I sort of thought Fr/Ed was playing the good host role and dressing with less flash and formality than his guests so they look their best. I can't wait to describe Lovely and everyone's party face.

It's good to go away and it's always good to come home. I missed you all. The comments today are a terrific way to catch up.

AmyK did anyone welcome you to Caray Caray? Let me add my welcome to you. I hope you like this site, there are such terrific people writing, translating, commenting, snarking and having general madness and mayhem and fun.

The ads placed within the episodes make me crazy too. It is one of the reasons I love the historic novelas, they really can't have the little stomach with his suitcase or the bottles of joy juice or the Fredericks of Hollywood style undies. I noticed that the Telemundo shows shot in Florida product place like mad so we can't blame it on Mexico customs.

Thanks Melissa! Is it possible for FrEd to get any hotter?

ITA Maggarita: What a cackling idiot. I can't wait to see karma wipe that smile off of his Tropicana face. Bwahahahah!

No doubt Denia looks good, she just isn't good, at least not yet...
