En Nombre del Amor, August 20, 2009: Carlota Checks Off Another Item on Her To-Do List

Carlota’s talking with the lawyer, requesting that he change the clause about Paloma getting her money when she turns 18. He says he can’t, and she assures him that she’ll find a way to compensate him for it.

On the phone, Carlota agrees to give Arcadia the money--she’ll bring it to her tonight at 9.

The doctor, Rodolfo, has stopped by to invite Macarena to go to the symphony concert with him and she agrees. He thought she was going to say no after what happened with Carlota yesterday, how Carlota said it was unethical for him to ask Macarena out since she’s his patient (of course, Carlota hears all this). Macarena sees that Carlota’s listening and asks the doc what time she should be ready.

Rufi arrives at Emiliano’s office to return his jacket. He asks if Paloma gave Rufi a message for him, but she didn’t. Orlando asks why did Paloma have your jacket? Emiliano, waxing poetic, recounts their meeting at the church--he has never felt her so close, something happened, he felt a connection between them for the first time. But she ran off without saying anything. Orlando says maybe the encounter scared her and she wanted to put some distance between them, and wonders if the fact that she sent the jacket back via a servant instead of returning it herself is a message that she wants Emiliano far away from her.

Romina and Paloma are at school, and Romina’s mocking Aron saying he’s there for Paloma if she needs a shoulder to cry on, etc.--puhleeze, says Romina, of course he loves you. Paloma tells her that Aron only wants to be friends. Romina says Paloma has to give him a chance, but Paloma replies that a very long time is going to pass before she’s interested in someone again. Romina understands about Inaki, but tells her to move on already. Paloma thinks if what happened to her happened to Romina, or Romina and Emiliano broke up, Romina wouldn’t be able to fall for anyone else so quickly. Romina declares there’s no possibility of them breaking up, and she wouldn’t be surprised if Emiliano proposes very soon.

Macarena is getting ready for her date, asking Rufi what she should wear. Carlota comes in with her usual criticisms about Macarena’s romance being ridiculous and how her clothes are unfashionable and old--the doctor is going to be embarrassed/ashamed of you. Rufi tells her not to pay attention to Carlota, but Macarena thinks Carlota was right, she is being ridiculous.

German and Emiliano are eating out, with German asking Emiliano for business advice or something. Then German says he’s thinking of going out with Paloma and Emiliano freaks out--don’t even think about it. You don’t take anyone seriously, for you everything is just about having fun. German thinks maybe a girl like Paloma is what he needs. He wonders if Emiliano is interested in her, but E denies it, saying he feels responsible for her, because Inaki once told him that he trusted Emiliano to take care of her. Emiliano thinks German should at least wait until she recovers from Inaki’s death, and German wonders if maybe there’s something else going on with Emiliano.

Paloma’s on the phone with Angelica, she’d like to talk in person, and Angelica agrees to wait for her in the park. Then she has a flashback of almost kissing Emiliano in the rain.

Romina joins German and Emiliano at the restaurant. German asks what Romina thinks of him going with Paloma and she laughs no, you two are like water and oil. Emiliano says see? I’m not the only one who thinks you and Paloma are a no go. Then Romina adds the gossip that Paloma already found someone, Aron.

Paloma shares with Angelica that she feels badly about Inaki, and Angelica tries to assure her that nothing she does now can affect Inaki. Paloma says that for a second she felt like kissing Emiliano. Angelica suggests that perhaps Paloma wasn’t thinking of Emiliano at that moment, but of Inaki--she had just been looking at their photos, so maybe she projected her feelings for him onto Emiliano. But it’s also possible that you’re attracted to Emiliano--Paloma denies this. Angelica says sometimes life surprises us and one can love again, sooner than they thought. Paloma protests but not Emiliano, he was Inaki’s friend and is Romina’s boyfriend and it scares her to think there could be something between them.

Macarena visits Camila at her shop to say that she’s not going to go out with the doctor because Carlota is right, I doesn’t have the right clothes, etc. Camila thinks Macarena is just nervous and decides to take her shopping.

Carlota at the bank picking up a briefcase full of cash.

Arcadia tells her niece that she’s going away tomorrow to the frontera (I think she means the United States?) to start a new life.

Musical montage of Macarena trying on dresses. Camila buys the clothes and Macarena doesn’t know how she’ll repay Camila for everything she does for her--she’s like the sister Mac always wanted to have. She also hopes Carlota doesn’t see the new outfit, because she surely she’s not going to like it. Camila asks what do you care if Carlota likes it or not, that’s Carlota’s problem, not yours.

Ines runs into Rafael on the street and she tells him how Diana informed her about the new ceramics line and the business making millions again (or did she say that Rafa would become a millionaire again?). Rafael looks POed. When did Diana tell you this? Oh, a couple days after you reconciled.

Diana shops for fabric--I guess she plans to redecorate.

Carlota puts the briefcase on top of a bureau.

Rufi comes to Paloma’s room to tell her that Aron is there to see her. He has brought her a book with poetry, quotes, etc. Carlota enters and Paloma asks if she remembers him; Aron reminds Carlota that he’s Ines’s nephew, the one she wanted for Paloma. Carlota says Paloma’s in mourning and shouldn’t go out with him or anyone else. Aron says friends are there in good times and bad, and he’ll call tomorrow to see if Paloma wants to go to the movies. After he leaves Paloma asks why shouldn’t she go out with Aron--after all, you said he was the kind of person you wanted near me and now I’m listening to you. Carlota asks, and if people criticize and talk badly of you? Paloma says pain is carried within, and she doesn’t care what others think.

Emiliano is ranting to Orlando about Paloma allegedly having another boyfriend. Every day it’s harder for him to hide his feelings for her. Emiliano declares that he’s going to put distance between them and Orlando agrees that’s the best option.

Macarena asks Paloma don’t think I’m being ridiculous? She wouldn’t have dared do this if not for the love she has for Paloma. She doesn’t want Paloma’s destiny to be like her and Carlota’s. She advises Paloma to trust, love, and feel alive again. Maybe it’s too late for her (Macarena), but Paloma is young and has her whole life ahead of her. If Paloma achieves happiness, everything will have been worth it. The doctor arrives to pick up Macarena; as they leave Carlota glares and shakes her head.

Emiliano and his nana Meche talk about her grandson Chava--he wasn’t where E expected to find him playing soccer. Apparently Chava is hanging out with kids who are older than him and she’s very worried about him. She’s afraid that he’ll turn into an alcoholic, like his mother. Chava knows about this and she has tried to talk to him, but everything she says goes in one ear and out the other. Emiliano promises to talk to him.

Romina tells Camila that she really wants to see her father, she thinks he’s in Mexico City (according to the detective she hired) she’s sure he will look for her, she’s going to see him soon and she’s never going to let him leave. Camila tries to caution Romina and is worried that she’ll get hurt. Romina thinks if he’s back it’s because he came for her, and she’ll welcome him back with all her heart.

Carlota skulks out of the house with the briefcase; Emiliano is across the street in front of Romina’s house and sees her. Paloma gets out of bed and looks out the window--Emiliano smiles and waves, which causes her to duck back into her room. While waiting for Romina to open the door, Emiliano moons over Pal a bit more.

Arcadia’s on the side of the road when Carlota drives up. Arcadia checks that the money’s all there and starts to walk away. Carlota gets back into her car and runs her over. I seem to remember that the FELS recappers/viewers kept a body count, and it looks like we’ll need one for this show too. So that makes two people Carlota has knocked off so far (that we know of).

Carlota picks up the briefcase and shoves Arcadia’s body off the side of the road.

Emiliano and Romina are eating dinner at her house. Emiliano mentions the situation with Chava, and she while she thinks the kid isn’t Emiliano’s responsibility, she likes that he worries about Chava because that means he’s going to be a very good father. He responds that he had a great example. Romina tells him about her father being in Mexico City. Emiliano changes the subject and asks if it’s true that Paloma already has a new boyfriend--yes, it’s true…Paloma isn’t as sweet and pure as everyone thinks. The truth is I don’t understand--to me she isn’t so “wow” for everyone to be crazy for her.

Paloma gets out of bed again, looks out the window and sees that Emiliano’s car is still there in front of Romina’s house.

Rafael arrives home and he finds out that Diana bought a new living room set. He’s annoyed and asks how they’re going to pay for it. Well, don’t you have a new investor that’s going to make him a millionaire? He replies that he never said they were going to be millionaires.

Macarena and the doctor Rodolfo are at a restaurant. She likes him but senses that he has other intentions, and doubts that she can return his feelings. He explains she’s everything he wants in a woman, etc. She’s a good woman who deserves to leave behind all the sadness she’s had in her life, and he has realized that Paloma is the only thing keeping her with Carlota. She confesses that she had decided to move out after Paloma married. He offers to take care of her and Paloma, and he wants them to marry.

Diana wants to know if we’re not rich, why’d you give me that painting? It’s not fair if you can buy whatever you want and I can’t. Rafael explains that he used his savings to buy the painting; they haven’t seen any money from the new project yet, and besides it is a risk. Diana protests that Joel told her it’d be successful and that they are going to be rich. Rafa asks what did Joel say and when? She lies that she hasn’t seen Joel in a long time, and says stress must be causing Rafa to make things up.

Carlota is back home after just another day at the office. She’s got a lace doily thing on and is caressing it while smiling at herself in the mirror (Que the heck??!!). I think we saw her or someone else putting this on in the very first episode?

Avances: Cristobal looking impactado while standing at gate, Carlota plotting against Aron, Orlando and Camila on a date, Emiliano sees Paloma at the movies with Aron, and German says Emiliano is in love with Paloma (which Romina hears).

I felt sad for Arcadia even if I found her very very annoying!!!

Fabulous title, Maggie. Why am I not surprised? Sounds like our Carlota is on a roll. How long has Iñaki been dead. A week or so? Or is it "meses después"? Seems like things are moving along awfully fast romance-wise.

Pefect title Debbie and a wonderful recap from start to finish.

Loved "Carlota is back home after just another day at the office." Excllent! Also, you were right - it was Carlota who had on the same lace scarf while smiling and admiring herself in the mirror.

An eventful episode. Emiliano's feelings for Paloma are clearly transparent. It was not a stroke of genius for German to see that E is already in love with Paloma. Emiliano saw Carlota leave the house with the bag and think this sighting will be important down the road.

Can't decide if I'm on team Rafael or team Orlando for Camila. Orlando seems very nice nice but I have to give extra sympathy points to Rafael for the life of hell he must be living with Diana. As others have pointed out the past few days, there's also definite chemistry between Rafael and Camila.

While Mac's romance with the good doctor is annoying Carlota, she will most likely focus her anger on Aron as her number one priority seems to be ruining Paloma's life and crushing any and all opportunity for her happiness. Blech...

Carlota really knows how to multi-task! I was thinking that last night as I watched this episode, so your title was perfect. I wonder what goes on in her head? "Let's see, today I need to: 1)bribe a lawyer to keep quiet about the details of my brother's will; 2) scare the servants; 3) withdraw bribe money from the bank; 4) belittle my sister and crush her happiness; 5) belittle my niece and crush her happiness; 6) belittle anyone else I see and crush their happiness; 7) kill my accomplice who is blackmailing me; 8) choose a fabulous purple outfit for tomorrow; and last, but not least 9) pray to the Lord and thank him for all the "good" things he gives me the strength to do each day. :)

Debbie, great recap.

Vivi, I like your to-do list for Carlota. She sure does stay busy. It's amazing she even has time to pile on all that purple eyeshadow and lipstick.

We've seen that lace thing several times now and she's usually fondling it or putting it on when there are some serious evil deeds going down. It must have some particular significance for her...maybe she made it as part of her trousseau or wedding outfit back when she was determined to marry Cris? Seems likely it will be used to strangle someone before she's done.

I'm still liking that everyone on this show is not a moron. Everyone realizes St. Milo has a thing for Paloma? The school counselor actually gives good advice? Rafa suspects his wife only wants him back for the money? What the heck kind of novela is this? The only major blind spot is that no one (except Romina) can imagine Carlota's extreme level of evil.

I'm actually liking Aron better than Emiliano. He's not as whiny and he stands up to Carlota by using his wits. There was lots of subtly there in his conversation with Carlota. She couldn't find any reasons to argue with him. Plus, he and Paloma do have a lot in common having lost people so close to them and both being nerds. Hopefully, he won't come on as strong as Emiliano has with Paloma.

What does that say when we prefer two other galans (Inaki and Aron) over our main galan?

That last scene with Carlota and the shawl was downright creepy.

Her evilness seems to have been dormant and now she's on a full-fledged rampage. She's definitely done this before.

Everybody at Real del Monte better look out.

Perdoname Debbie! I misspoke. Great title and recap. But calling you Maggie is a high compliment, mind you.

Great recap and title, Maggie.

Carlota's running over Arcadia was a bit ambiguous. I couldn't tell from her expressions if she had planned this all along or if the fact that Arcadia walked right on the road caused her to impulsively run her over.

Sheesh. Her desire to ruin everything for Paloma couldn't have been clearer when she couldn't even tolerate the presence of Aron, her handpicked nerdy swain.

I wonder how bad they're going to make Romina. She's such damaged goods. And she's not as smart as she thinks she is. Women's intuition should have kicked in by now so that she'd have noticed how Emiliano glares at her when she comes up with one of her catty comments about Pal. She could keep that relationship going a bit longer if she laid off Paloma.

I don't think Carlota planned to kill Arcadia, she just took the chance when it came up. If she had planned it, I don't think she would have gotten all the cash. Now she has a banker wondering QTH is going on in her life.

Carlota does not want to be alone. Anybody who comes along and tries to mess with her comfort zone is gone.

I am so thankful for your recap...missed this episode and I am really addicted to this show now!
How do I see episodes that I have missed? I tried youtube but the quality makes me motion sick. Is there another website to view old episodes?

I am a Milo fan, from the very first time he met Paloma you could see attraction in both their eyes. IF pushy Romi didn't get in the way he would have dated Paloma.

Also I am on team Rafael. Camilla lights up when she sees him.

I was surprised that they cremated Inaki. My Catholic Mexican relatives would never cremate for religious reasons. Maybe times have changed or Inaki's family were not really religious...

What is that lace shawl Carlota seems to love?

Looking forward for Padre Chris. Wonder how long the writers will keep him from seeing Mac !

Whoops, so sorry, Debbie. I didn't bother to scroll back to the end of your recap, just looked at JudyB's comment and called you Maggie also! After all, JudyB is one of our most astute commenters and couldn't possibly be wrong!

And it WAS an excellent recap!

Thank you, Debbie, your recap was great and the commentors have me LOL

I agree, St. Emil is number three on my list as well, after beloved Inaki and smart self confident Aron. However, I loved the way he thumped the restaurant table and caused a stir like Damien and his mama in MEPS a few nights ago. Maybe he'll end up throwing a cell phone someday. Emil is a flawed galan because he doesn't have the strength to break it off with Romina whom he is leading on by coming back to her when she pleads and pleads.

Added to the hit list: Rodolfo and Aron.

I hope Rafa talks to Joel to learn that Diana already knew about the loan when she seduced him back to her. Then he can pack his bags and leave for good. Yeah.

I can't remember who was talking but I swear I couldn't hear because there was a loud fountain, again.

Really terrific recap, Debbie. And I loved your title (plus getting unearned compliments for it – ha!).

I’m thinking Arcadia left her brain at home when she arranged to meet a known killer in a lonely spot outside the town. I too had the feeling that Carlota hadn’t planned to run her over, that it was a last-minute inspiration.

I was wondering why the commenters yesterday were thinking Carlota wanted to bribe the lawyer, and then in the repeats last night, I see there was a scene where she indicated exactly that. So I had missed it the night before. I wonder what Carlota is going to do with all that tempting-looking money? Perhaps she’ll flap the suitcase open for the lawyer and his ethics will evaporate.

Everyone sure expects Paloma to move on quickly. How long has it been since she was wailing on her bedroom floor and they had to give her a sedative? Weeks?

Thanks Judy and novelera, and no worries--it is indeed high praise to be mistaken for Maggie!

Vivi, I like Aron better too. But I'm afraid that him standing up to Carlota means that, as GinCA points out, he's now on Carlota's hit list.

GinCA, I also noticed the loud fountain--it was drowning out Paloma and Angelica's conversation. I only watched FELS for the first month or so, but I remember that there was a really loud fountain in that show too (and a braying donkey).

Thanks for the recap Debbie. Nope, not Aron. Something just not right about him. Emil number one. St. Emil has stood up to Cruel, too. So, nothing special there. :)
I think Camila has lit up when Orlando is around as much as with Rafa. Also, Rafa is married. Going with Lando now, but a close one. Rafa has to drop the dead weight. :)
I also thought Que the heck after Cruel came back from her business meeting. What was up with that. I think she is starting to like that killing business. I was wondering whether that murder was planned or not. It was sort of looking like perhaps she took advantage of the situation when it came. Sees things to be done, self motivated. But... seems like that vehicle should have a few dings, cracks, stains on it.

JeffMN

I'm sure Carlota will take her car to the car wash first thing. And since Arcadia already told the few people who might care that she is planning to leave the country, no one will look for her for a good long time so unless someone just happens upon her body soon, the trail will be pretty cold. (Speaking of which, is that old guy at the bottom of the hill on MEPS still unaccounted for?)

I don't really like Aron, but I don't have a good reason for that. He's just a little too nerdy or something. Normally I rather like nerds, but to me he has the dorkiness of being a nerd, without the frequently accompanying characteristic of being interesting.

Great recap Debbie :)

Well Carlota is just establishing a body count now isn't she?

And I agree it was totally creepy how she fondled that poor lacey thingee she had....creepy..

I'm going for Milo, Aron just looks to Clark Kentish for me.

I feel like Romina just wants to constantly talk about her "friend" Paloma. Its always something and now they are talking about how she moved on so quickly from the death of Iñaki. To the naked eye it seems that way, but I think Aron just came around at the right moment.

And no ones talking about poor lilianna (I think I spelled her name wrong...sorry).
I feel so bad for her, she's caught in the middle of this crazy love triangle..well square. I feel like they (Germie y Evilmina) have made her look like a fool and a mentirosa (liar) so why the heck would she even talk to Germie is beyond me....

And this would've been the perfect title for :"another one bites the dust"
I agree with someones comment earlier...know Cruel just killed your former employees son why the heck would u go meet her in a secluded area, at night, alone and told no one where you were going...hmmm can we say stupida?

Well, so far there haven't been too many things we could call "estupida" besides everyone accepting Carlota's 180 degree personality change overnight and not suspecting foul play in Inaki's death (except for Romina...good for her) and Arcadia's poor choice of a location for a rendezvous with Carlota. I pray this novela will remain on track with the good writing, good acting and keeping the characters intelligent. I'm still recuperating from FELS.

Oops, GinCA

I probably should have had a disclaimer on my last post, because I actually find both Aaron and Emiliano to be rather uninspiring, but at the moment, for me, Aaron is a little less annoying than Emiliano since he’s not whining and pining (at least not yet, anyway). I don't get why Emiliano agreed to be Romina’s novio in the first place, but I guess the writers had to do that to set up the love triangle (perhaps I need one of those beanies to help me suspend belief?). So far I’m finding the older characters like Cristobal, Macarena, and Camila to be a bit more compelling than Paloma et al.

Carlota=Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty: even down to the purple like smoke that surrounded her as she stood on the cliff, gleefully admiring the fruit of another evil deed. Poor Arcadia, she let her guard down. Amazing how greed can cloud one's judgement.

I am enjoying this telenovela so much. In fact, I wonder if the homes are real houses in this little village? They are decorated with such attention to detail. Paloma's aunties' kitchen is so warm and cozy. I love all Televara tile.
Isn't Camila's shop wonderful? Every time a scene comes up in there, my eyes are scanning the background, wishing I could buy something from her.

LOL and thanks for all the excellent recaps and comments. I look forward to reading them everyday; even though, I don't always contribute. ^_^

JanZ I agree about the sets on this novela. I also love Camilla's shop. I'd spend a fortune if I ever went into a place like that.

~Caborita

I agree that Camilla's store looks like a great place to shop.
I also like her home, the staircase has low lights that look like candles, very nice. Her bright orange walls and sofa are bold, wish I had the nerve to paint my home such bright colors!
