Gancho Thurs 10/1 - Mau is a princess locked in a tower, waiting for the monkey to fight the dragon who is really a mummy who's quite the female dog

Moni and Mau continue their romantic rough and tumble on the wrestling mat when suddenly Mau ruins the mood by kissing Moni. Que the hell? Well she's miffed about it, she started it, go figure. Mau's befuddled too, "Why do you keep doing things that confuse me?" He wants to start from zero but then they remember some cool stuff they don't want to forget, then Moni points out he's engaged, and Mau points out she's got a boyfriend. Sometimes starting from zero isn't that easy.

Elsewhere in another ring Beto and Coni are circling and sniffing. They're turned on as usual but Coni tells RRRRoberto that Nieves is threatening to tell Mau about them. Beto promises before his jefa lets out the soup he'll cut her tongue off. (Soltar la sopa - to spill the beans) He then calls Coni out, she doesn't love Mau, she loves Beto. Doesn't matter, Coni's hot for Beto but she's engaged to Mau. She slinks outta there and Beto muses that she just loves Mau for his money.

Xime shows up at Grupo Sermeño wearing, hell I don't know what she's wearing, it kind of looks like a pillow but of course she looks good in it. Anyway, she gripes to Gabi that she's all out of girlfriends. Pau's leaving, Coni's a bitch, and Estrella is a man-stealer, so that leaves Gabi.

Lalo Mora the wedding planner shows up at GS to see Sal. Xime starts to fall for him, didn't he plan the wedding of Pablito Arias? Why she was there! They bond on a superficial level but it means something more to Xime. She tells Gabi she wants to ask him out. Gabi snickers that they can pluck each others' eyebrows. Xime demonstrates her feelings by gnawing on a red rose.

In brief, Moni reminds Mau he is supposed to get married in a month, that's why she's annoyed. If he really wants to start from zero he can break it off with Coni. She stomps off in a huff, high fiving el Cibernetico, Tano and the punching bag on her way out.

Lalo bonds with the girls in the coffee room and agrees with Pau that good men are hard to find. They're either married or...like him, tee hee. Xime tries to convince Lalo to hire her as his assistant. After he leaves she enthusiastically tells Gabi and Pau she's in love with him. "She's really in for a big surprise," Pau and Gabi whisper to each other.

Tano has a heart to heart with Mau. He says Mau is crazy to fight for a woman when he's engaged to another. And Moni feels the same for him, she showed up to help him fight! Tano tells him that Estrella thinks he's some fairytale prince who will rescue Monita, when instead Mau is the princess locked in the castle tower braiding her hair, hoping that La Monita fights dragons in order to save him from a marriage that is obviously a mistake! Mau admits he's just marrying Coni so he can keep the kids. Fine, get married then, advises Tano, but marry the woman you really love.

Gabi and Pau trie to clue Xime in to Lalo's particular persuasion. Pau says he's very, er, suavecito, he "kicks his feet up". Oh, he's a futbalista squeals Xime in delight! Gabi tries to clarify, he eats rice with a straw. And the Chinese use chopsticks, Xime exclaims! El Suavecito returns and Xime flies to his arms. Gabi points out his telephone is pink. Just like Xime's! She invites him to her place to look at fotos of when she was little so they can get to know each other better. Weird. They scamper off, giggling. Gabi and Pau roll their eyes.

Katia and Aldo talk about her sister the impediment, then they kiss.

Over at GS Moni brings Coni her cappuchino and Coni complains about how long it took, then she makes a big show of kissing Mau in front of Moni, talking about the wedding and generally being rude to Moni who finally leaves.

Coni, we need to talk, Mau says. Uh oh. "I'm sorry but i'm not going to marry you." (heh heh) She freaks but he remains firms. She slaps him hard. Then she keeps trying to talk him into marrying her. She begs, she wheedles, she whines, but he stands firm. It was good of her to offer to marry him for the kids but was a mistake and he doesn't want to condemn her to a loveless marriage. They stopped loving each other a long time ago. She has a hissy fit, and yells "I'll never give up" (Nunca me voy a dar por vencida) before messing up his desk and running to Jero's office...

...but not to his arms, too bad for him. There is more whining from Coni until Oski says there is an answer for everything, together they will make Mau reconsider. They decide that working on the judge will be the best course of action. Jero keeps trying to console Coni and she keeps angrily rejecting him. You know those little dogs that keep trying to hump your leg? That's what I'm talking about.

Moni weeps and dreams about kissing and tussling with Mau. He finds her in the coffee closet and wants to talk. She says she's not crying for him but for her mother, she misses her so much sometimes. We viewers will forgive this little lie.

He wants to talk with her but not there and he convinces her to go out to eat. OK, she's the employee and has to do what he says but she gets to choose the place.

Katia flirts with Aldo on the phone but stops when she hears her sis. Coni comes in crying and tells Katia that Mau called off the wedding. But all is not lost, she wants Katia to help her out by enlisting Aldo. Katia refuses, is she only a sister of convenience? Besides, Coni just threatened to send her back to Italy if she didn't bust up with Aldo. Coni says he's a naco and will never be her equal, but if Katia doesn't help then she'll never see Aldo again. Remember the little problem Kati had when she was younger? Katia tells Coni she went to therapy for her kleptomania and she was cured. Not quite, smirks Coni. Bee. Atch.

Beto arrives home, "ugly but very simpatico", to find Nieves worried. He's been working hard and he needs food. She says she needs a son who's responsible and he can cook his own meal. He brings up the subject of Coni, at least she gives Beto encouragement unlike Nieves and Moni who don't care a cucumber for him. Nieves is really getting mad now. She thought he was gross but he's gross and a half. All he wants her to do is cook and clean, but from now on he can do it all himself and in fact he can look for somewhere else to sleep because he's kicked out of the house. Beto drops to his knees and demands crucifixion.

Nieves pushes Beto out the door and, wearing hearts on her ears and ass, weeps for her son.

Moni and Mau are at the common marketplace dining on tacos and brain quesadillas. She thinks it's fab but he admits he had something nicer and more romantic in mind. Moni pragmatically pronounces that romance is taboo, why do they need to be in a romantic spot when he's getting married? That's it precisely, he says, he cancelled his wedding. Moni's taco de carnitas hangs in mid air.

Aldo and Katia are shopping. Unbeknownst to our boy ingenue Katia keeps shoving stylish swag into her bright pink coat. As they leave she is busted by the beepers. The store dicks order her to open her coat and Aldo is impacted to see the booty fall to the ground.

Moni finally lets Mau kiss her, yummy carnitas!! He wants her to be in his life, to be his wife, to make a family. She promises to break up with Beto, no really she will, this very night. They kiss and she runs off to do the deed.

Mau answers his phone and it's an emotional Coni. Sheesh, he has to run home again? Coni kicks Lalo out of her apartment and tells him to get cracking on the wedding of the century, and by the way it will be in fifteen days. Ay dios mio, Laloquita nearly faints.

Moni comes home to find Beto eating pizza on her bed. He asks her can she wash his clothes? Oh, and his jefa kicked him out so starting today they are going to live together, whee!

Mau comes home to find the judge with Coni. Judge says there is no problem and he's happy to see that Mau is marrying such an extraordinary woman as Coni. (Damn her!!) She tells Mau the kids got caught shoplifting and the judge was ready to take them away again, but it wasn't Aldo, Katia is a klepto. Now they have to get married in 15 days or he'll definitely lose custody. (Makes no sense to me but OK, I'll play along.) Mau looks stupid and impactado and agrees to get married in 15 days. Coni squeals in delight. But wait, Mau tells her he'll get married HOWEVER not to her, he's going to marry the woman he really loves. Smack!

Here we go again...Coni cries and yells. Mau tries to calm her down, their relationship hasn't worked for a long time blah blah blah. He's not a love to her, he's an obsession, a whim. A marriage needs respect and that is missing for them. Sooner or later they have to admit it.

Coni accuses him of being cruel. He's sorry but Valentina is the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with. Oooooh but she's pissed. She vows that as long as she's alive he and that wretch won't be together.

Back at the barrio Moni tells Beto NO NO NO, she does not want to live with him or marry him. Ah, he gets it, it's because of Mauricio, right? Yes, he cancelled his wedding, he loves her and she can't live without him.

Katia cries to Aldo that yes, she has problems. She's been a klepto since she was a kid. Aldo is pretty cool about it. He pats her weird hair and tells her he'll help out.

Moni tells Beto she's really in love with Mau. Beto tearfully proclaims he preferred when she lied to him, he can't imagine being without her. He has no mother, no girlfriend, nothing. Moni tries to comfort him, he'll find someone and the world won't stop just because they're not togehther. He curses the day she ever set foot in that business!

Aldo tells Mau that if the judge takes them away he'll still think of Mau as his father and the father of his sisters. Mau reassures Aldo that nobody is going to separate him from his kids.

Beto gets pissed off and tells Moni he's going to break Mau's bones in two weeks. Then he says fine, his ma kicked him out, Moni kicked him out, he'll go live in the streets, begging for money, begging for love. He packs his backpack with his wrinkled shirts and empty pizza box. Starting today Moni is dead to him.

Mañana: Beto shows up at Coni's place begging to move in. Nieves demands 30,000 pesos from Coni and Estrella overhears.

Wow. Another lively one, Sylvia, and thanks for all those deft translations. "arroz con popote" seems to be a favorite in these comedy shows. No worries about political correctness I guess!

Thouught the scenes between Nieves and Beto were hysterical. When she reams him out, she really does a thorough job. And of course he just rolls down to Moni's house with his dirty socks and his pizza box. Whadda guy. How long could our fastidious Connie possibly put up with that?

Loved your description of Ximena's outfit.* I'd say it didn't have quite the same impact as her Grecian styled tunic. Well, she was playing particularly "clueless" in this episode, so perhaps that's it.

Hooray for Tano and his fairy tale image. We know this romantic success won't last, but it brought our two loves together temporarily and it was sweet to watch the tender juicy taco kisses.

*and Nieves' also

Good morning Judy. I used to feel quite offended by how un PC these shows are but not so much anymore. I guess I am getting more thick-skinned about it.

Frankly I was shocked that Mau broke up with Coni not once but twice in this episode. Of course we know it won't last, way too early in the show, but I enjoyed watching her suffer. She's meaner to her sis than I ever was to mine. Maybe I don't feel so bad anymore about torturing my little sis when we were kids. At least I didn't force her into a life of crime. I can't wait for tonight when Beto shows up.

Yes, I thought Connie really dropped pretty low in overall rating with her demand for shoplifting. Also, while I want to believe she is capable of "love", her interest in Beto seems pretty one-dimensional. So far her only redeeming quality seems to be attractiveness and great legs.

Carlos? Can you come up with anything else? Know you're a fair-minded guy when it comes to the ladies. Sometimes we womenfolk are harsh.

Thanks for the recap, Sylvia, great observations as always.

Now as to Connie's redeeming qualities...she's pretty, she's passionate, she dresses well, she runs a business. I do think she loves Mau, not just his money. And if Moni hadn't come onto the scene, maybe she would have gotten married, and had a fairly happy life as a spoiled rich woman. Of course she's stereotypically snobby to anyone not in her "class", but I'm sure there are many like that in real life. Most of her dastardly deeds have been done out of desperation.

Oh, and Sylvia, I love the title. Mau as a princess. Well, he does have the hair!

Ah Hombre...well-observed and well argued. Thank goodness we have men who see our better qualities and explain away the rest. We promise to do the same for you!

Yeah, that super irked me too that Coni urged her sister not just into crime but back into a really bad psychological addiction. That kind of impulse addiction clepot thing is super hard to kick and forcing her into that even for fake could set her off again. Yikes. That bothered me the most. You know, it's like asking a sobered alcoholic to get drunk for a night so someone can be taken advantage of. Yuck, yuck and triple yuck!!

OK that's out of my system. I know, comic book.

Anyway, I actually thought Beto was bragging that he washed his own clothes, but maybe I wasn't paying attention closely. I think it will be absolutely hysterical if Coni lets Beto stick around. It will in a way be like Three's Company, I can only imagine.

LOVED YOUR TITLE!!!! When I heard that line I figured you'd take note of it. Perfect summary indeed.

Howdy all, sorry to have been off line so long. Busy at work, and we've been looking after our son's dog all week as well. Plus I got caught up in the Ken Burns "National Parks" series on PBS which came on right after Gancho.

As long as we're judging Constanza, my dos centavos' worth: a chunk of basura. A good lookin' chunk of basura, to be sure, but no more than that. The type of woman who views life as a zero sum game complete with an enormous sense of entitlement. Wouldn't want either of my sons to bring something like that around.

Loved the look on Aldo's face when the theft fruit fell out of Coni's mini-me's coat!

Now there's the real question: would anyone of us be happy if our son brought home a Connie?

I'm not sure even our kindly Hombre would be happy.

Anyway, thanks for a colorfully expressed dissenting view Mike.

Now, will Carlos come down somewhere in the middle?

I love Tano. I hope his straight shooting becomes a bigger feature. Calling Mau a princess in a tower was just too, too funny...because it's true.

Can someone explain the "arroz con popote" to me? Or do I not want to know?

I don't think Connie really loves Mauricio at all. To me, love means wanting what's best for the other person and caring about how they feel and what they want. Connie is all about herself.

Awesome recap as usual.

My brother had a girlfriend who was kind of a Connie. She hadn't gotten to the point of all the scheming and whatnot but I could see things going that direction. For the longest time my brother could not understand why we all did not find her utterly delightful but eventually he wised up, thank goodness.

Julia, I agree w/ you about Tano. He and Teresa seem to be the two islands of sanity on this TN.

I'm thinking you do not want to know Julia. Briefly from what I understand it's derived from the physical characteristics of the symbolic items in question.

Think about what rice pudding looks like, and then what a straw is used for and well....

Anyway, not to open old wounds, but I just stumbled upon the comments about when Jero did the nasty with Conni. I'd have to see the scene really, but from reading the recap description, I can see how what happened wouldn't necessarily have to be considered as rape.

Now, I'm not going to split legal hairs with anyone on that point, because this is a "cartoon" and ficticious afterall, but I sort of saw the situation rather as she agreed to that method of disuasion or compensation in exchange for Jero not showing anyone the video, i.e. it was her choice to go through with that act, she did have alternatives, not good ones, but alternatives none the less, so I don't think I have to feel that she was raped - rather that she made the decision to participate in this with him and rather than being violated against her will she was thoroughly disgusted to be with that pig and for that reason and that was the source of her upset.

I wouldn't dare compare this to real life, but in this scenario I'm just not feeling she was raped, more like she sold herself to get what she wanted. Anyway, another perspective to consider.

Great job Sylvia. Comparing Jero to a persistently amorous little dog is so funny because it is so accurate. The comic book character of of this show is underscored by the way Connie is back consulting with Jero and Oscar.

As for our Connie, it's difficult for me to be objective because she is so darn pretty and brings back for me mostly pleasant recollections of a bygone chapter in my life. I'm afraid I must admit that I would succumb to her charms and wiles. She, as I say is so pretty, well-educated, fashionable, and when she needs to, exudes charm and warmth. I'll bet she smells as pretty as she looks and add to that the feral lustiness that she keeps barely submerged beneath the surface... heck, even with full disclosure of the contraindications, I would tumble hopelessly head over heels for her. She has a weapon for just about everyone of my weak spots.

Carlos

Who thinks it's a good idea to reproduce with ANY of the Sermenos? Mauricio is handsome and nice but dumb as a stump, Ximena is the smartest person in Ximena-world, and probably brighter than the boys. Jeronimo must have ridden his bike without a helmet. He's a nincompoop, dunderhead, horse's patootey. Oscar could talk him into painting himself purple if he thought it would get him the company $$$.

Gee, Carlos, now tell us how you really feel...

I agree she is pretty and wears her clothes well, but, nah, she probably smells of money-lust.

Carlos, Satan walks the earth in many forms, amigo. My Rx for you, sir, is a shot of your best bourbon.

Hell, it IS Friday!

Mike and Emilia, the years have rendered me a little less vulnerable to the Momias of the world, but when she is behaving amiably, she is almost irresistible. Fortunately for me, the lovely Linda has all the positive characteristics without the glaring flaws that Connie demonstrates. For her attitude toward the kiddies is a big downer, but when she tries, she masks that rather well: at least from Mao's viewpoint. Little Dani is more discerning, however.

Carlos

Oh...uh...thanks for the information. You're right; I guess I'd rather not have that image. What a roundabout way of saying it, though.

I thought it was very poignant when Beto told Monita that he liked it better when she was lying to him. That was a very honest, very sad admission. He recovers quickly however. Should be fun if Connie lets him move in. Somehow I don't see that happening, however.

Carlos

Ay yi yi...oh yes, that moment with Beto and Monita. Poignant and so true. When our loved ones decide to be "honest" with us, it's never good news and never easy to take. And if they ever say "I've decided to be brutally honest..." head for the hills!

It's true...I never hear anyone say, "I have to be brutally honest here: You look great, and your jokes are the funniest I've heard in ages. Also, I think you're doing way more than your share of the housework. I really just want to take you on a long vacation."

Ha, good point Julia!

You know, I too felt sorry for Beto in the last scene, but honestly the guy is a dog. One minute he sincerely wants Moni as and the next he's running after Moni. What gives with him?

I don't feel sorry for him at all. He's a spoiled child, and it's high time someone told him no.

You mean you don't hear that on a daily basis, Julia? :)

OK, me neither. Sigh.

I've learned that when someone asks,

"Do you want the truth?"

I probably don't.

Carlos
