Gancho Tuesday Oct 27, '09 This Boda Doesn't Bode Well

Alternative Title: Is It Okay If I Say Mean Things About Constanza?

Yep, our Connie has gone beyond the pale now. From time to time I've felt a flicker of compassion for this rejected female ,but she's so far on the dark side now there's no coming back. Mauricio, the children, and a whole lot of other folks are about to learn that Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned--especially if that woman is Connie.

We start this evening with Mauricio barging into the judge's office to tell him if he thinks he can take the children away the judge is wrong! Alas, it's our dim but hunky hero who's wrong. The judge informs him that Constanza Lerdo de Tejado, the responsible woman who took care of the kids while he was away, is now their legal adoptive mother. Well make that mutha'. He dismisses Mauricio as an irresponsible doofus who's better off taking in a "mascota" (pet) if he wants warm fuzzies. The children are better off with the right person...and that's Constanza.

While we mull over that bizarre thought, the scene switches to Nieves and Monita, bonding over her offer of her old wedding dress. Seems Nieves was also romanced by a millionaire, the father of Beto, but was left standing at the altar in this very dress. But that's why she worried so much about the Mauricio/Monita romance! Now, though, she understands that these two are meant for each other. So she gives it her blessing and offers her dress to replace the one her "criaturita" ripped to shreds. The scene ends with a loving hug and a "Que Dios te bendiga y te vaya bien."

The prospects for that look dim. But we'll see.

Back to Sal and Mauricio who's frothing at the mouth and not thinking clearly. (Well, he never does. But for once it's understandable.) However it's clear to Mauricio that Connie is behind this. Sal tries to point out that surely Oscar and Jerry are also, but that our Mau can't believe. But hey, he's still planning to marry Monita...THIS AFTERNOON...and surely that will help his case with the judge.

And boom, we have an ad. Lately the ads have been coming at 7:08 or 09...much earlier than before. More ads because greater audience share? Who knows?

When we come back, we see Oscar at the office, fooling around on the computer. Lorenza walks in and soon they're fooling around together--after she complains about having spent the night in jail, that is. He reassures her that getting a divorce from Sal is a great move. But take him for all the money he's got! As Lorenza mulls over the way she wants Sal to suffer, Oscar is clearly turned on. Ah, what an adorable couple.

Another adorable couple is Nieves and Beto. She's massaging his shoulders and trying to make him see reality. Monita stopped loving you. She fell in love with Mauricio. These things happen. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're bad. But don't ruin her day, Beto. Sure, in fact I'll help them, lies Beto, following Connie's advice. Nieves is surprised at the sudden change....and without even a sandwich request. Mighty suspicious.

Beto now trots over to Monita's room to propose walking her down the aisle. Paula and Estrella are as suspicious as Nieves, and try to run him off. But he manages to convince Monita that both his repentance for ripping the dress and his desire to make her wedding a happy one are for real. Lots of shifty eyes while he makes these declarations but our lovestruck bride to be doesn't notice. Big hug.

And big hug with Mauricio and his children also. He assures them he'll work things out with the judge, but in the meantime they'll have to stay with Connie. Horror and protests. But wait...there's more. Good news. I'm going to marry Monita this afternoon. Joy and excitement.

But now we have to talk about what happened while I was away. Discomfort and concern. Yep, Mau's lowering the boom. No more relationship with Estrella. No more noviazgo with Ivan. Doing all this behind his back was even worse. After all, he's a dad who LISTENS. They should have told him.

Another scene change. Now we're at the hospital where Teresa and Ivan are talking. He's reassuring abuelita that he truly loves Luisa and will do her no harm. But it's better if he doesn't come back to live at the house. But he'll visit Teresa every day.

Back to Connie's apartment. Now that Mauricio has laid down the law, he reassures the kids he's not mad at them and NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO SEPARATE US (start the anvils falling right now, gente). This tender moment is soured the moment the door opens and Connie enters with an "Hola guapo".

Paula and Estrella are still trying to wise up Monita about Beto's intentions. "Yo que , la verdad"... (Truthfully, if I were you...) Paula begins. But Monita cuts her short. She really believes Beto is sincere.

Not so Mauricio. He's convinced that Connie is behind this crazy adoption and blows away her initial story about having them at her house to forestall sending them to the orphanage. You're a hypocrite, a schemer, a liar and now that I know who you really are, I can't believe you're still begging for love, he sneers. I'm going to marry Monita and I want you out of our lives.

Be careful how you talk to me, is her cool reply. You're not taking the kids from here. They're mine, legally mine.

Three caras impactadas as the kids suddenly learn Connie is their legal adoptive mother. In our updated refrain, Oh no, oh yes, oh crap!

Our little pit bull Estrella is still gnawing away at Beto, saying he doesn't fool her for a minute. Big Pit Bull Nieves shoulders her way up and tells our star she's not going to yell at Beto in his own mother's house. And from there, launches into one of her signature ream-outs of Estrella. Listen, babe, your little cub "está en celo" (in heat, under the influence of hormones) but once he's had his fill, he's going to look for a girl his own age (at which point, Nieves hoists her bosom to indicate that Estrella will be droopy and aged very shortly). Thereafter follows some family insults such as "Bruja tu abuela!" No tengo, replies Estrella. "Se nota" quips Nieves. Rough stuff.

Time for a little sweet romance with a touch of comedy, right? I mean, this has been Grimsville so far. Right...so we're off to Gabriela's apartment. Sal has come to change his clothes for the wedding. Can't get into his own place. Gaby reassures him that he can count on her. We're in this together. I'm in front of you, behind you, on your backside!...This calls for a kiss. Romantic music swells. Doorbell rings. Music fades. Oh crap.

And the crap is hitting the fan back at Connie's. How much do you love those kids? she asks. Because if you ever want to see them again, you'll have to do what I ask. If you humiliate me by marrying that guttersnipe of a street monkey, I'll take them from you forever. And if you try to leave with them now, I'll call the police. You need to reclaim your real place in life...WITH ME...not with that grubby animal.

Mauricio's not coming 'round. We were together out of habit, not love. I NEVER was in love with you. And now all I feel is contempt.

Hmmm...not the best way to handle a breakup. But Mauricio's been pushed beyond endurance. Where will this lead?

Well, forget that for the moment. We're back with Gaby and Salvador....and guess who rang the bell? Lorenza. Will she strangle Sal? Nope, she's going to take a deep breath, imagine him slowly roasting to death in the fireplace and then relax. But vamoose Sal! Lorenza wants a heart to heart with Gaby and he'd just be in the way. Nope, Sal's staying and he wants to talk about the divorce. Gaby trots off to hide the knives and the talk begins.

Switch back to the devastated kids. Dany doesn't want to stay with Monstranza Bruja Connie. Neither do the others. Mauricio promises to see them every day but for now he'll have to say good-bye. They're distraught and Luisa screams to la momia that she hates her. But Connie has the last world. I'll see you in church, she warns Mauricio....and we'll see how much you love your children.

After the ads, we find ourselves back in Gaby's apartment, listening to the sad tale of Sal and Lorenza's marriage. We lost love love years ago, he's telling her. I feel empty with you. You didn't want kids. You changed the decor every three months. We had no relationship. Yet even so, I never slept with another woman.

Lorenza starts getting angry again, but Gaby calms her by suggesting she close her eyes and imagine Sal falling down an elevator shaft.

And Sal continues, looking straight into Gaby's eyes.

But I WAS unfaithful in that I let another woman into my heart. I fell madly in love with her.

Whoops, Lorenza's getting angry once more. Imagine that Sal has catalepsia and seems to have died, Gaby whispers to Lorenza. You bury him. He wakes up pounding at the coffin, crying, shrieking. Hmm...I feel better, murmurs Lorenza.

And...."I love you too" Gaby silently mouthes to Salvador.

And there, our sweet, romantic ,crazy ,funny scene ends. The rest of the episode is pretty much oh no, oh yes, oh crap.

Mau drops in on Teresa at the hospital, tells her he'll take her home when she's discharged tomorrow, and avoids upsetting her by reassuring her the kids are fine. Outside the room, Ivan tries to convince Papa Mau he didn't want to hurt Luisa but dad assures him he already has. And don't come near her again!

Is the wedding still on? Well, down in the barrio, it looks that way. Nieves is dressed up like a Walt Disney Cinderella doll. Estrella manages a dig about how could Nieves have ever fit into the wedding dress, given how "caderota" (hippy) she had to have been, even in her youth.

Beto, looking spiffy in a tuxedo, but still with shifty eyes, arrives with Costeño and assures Monita all the guys from the gym will be coming to the church also. Looks like a full house for our disaster, no? Consteño thinks Beto must be on some kind of drug, he's so calm. Well, our big dude is right to be suspicious. Beto's in cahoots with Connie and that's never a good thing.

Sal, meanwhile (mientras tanto, excuse me!) is trying to keep Mau from going ballistic before the wedding. But how can Mauricio stay calm, after seeing how the kids looked at him, how they held on to him, their tears....? Well, don't fall into Connie's trap, cautions Sal. If they bought the judge, we'll find out and do something about it. But maybe you should put off the wedding.

Mauricio pauses and seems to come to a decision. I'm getting married. Together, Monita and I will both fight Connie!

And on that hopeful note we end.

Previews:
Beto has walked Monita down the aisle as promised, but now he won't let go of her arm!

Vocabulary:
puente peotonal =pedestrian bridge
mi otra mitad = my other half, my better half
puesto como fiera = to get furious lit. to get like a wild beast
ni te inmutas = you weren't even bothered (Mauricio criticizing Connie for being indifferent to the children's suffering)
caderota - hippy, big-hipped
yo que tú = shortened version of "If I were you"
se nota =you can tell, it's obvious

Dichos of the Day

Estar entre la espada y la pared. (lit. to be between the sword and the wall) To be between the devil and the deep blue sea; to be between a rock and a hard place. That's where Mauricio is right now.

Estar hecho bolas (pelotas) To be completely at sea; to be all mixed up. And that's where Mauricio is also! Pobrecito!

Greetings Judy. I hope your eyes are better. Please dear recapper in the future wear googles as we don't want anything to happen to them or you (said the blogger with compassion).

Nice pun with the title. Oh Connie. Your assessment of her is spot on she's past redemption now. But I am enjoying Nieves new turn (her flirting with Sal in jail, reaming out Lorenza and really supporting Moni). In fact, I would be sad to see Nieves with Connie as her DIL.

I know you don't like downer episodes but your recap, vocabulary and dichos were stellar. Hopefully you'll get a mad-cap, silly, crazy episode (remember those days) in the near future.

Nothing better than beginning the day with a witty, wonderful recap. Gracias Judy. While I agree with Karen that this was far from the funfest we know and love, it was a pivotal episode. We, along with Mau, are firmly entrenched in the belief that Connie has now firmly passed the point of no return.

"Mutha'", along with "little pit bull" and "big pit bull" were simply great. While the vocabularly was excellent, the double dichos were a delight and meshed perfectly with this episode.

Are we absolutely certain Nieves and Estrella's aren't related?? There's a tenderness and affection but a brooding tension. Nieves is cunning and knows where to strike as evidenced by her taunting Estrella about her age difference with Aldo. I like Nieves best when she is surprisingly seductive and kind and loving.

Beto better come to his senses or he will be on the path to non-redemption himself.

Good morning girlfriends. Let's start with the eye. I've learned my lesson. Even this small infection is draining my energy. No more, no way will I use the blower without goggles.

This WAS a downer episode but the scene at Gabriela's apartment was just delicious. Gaby's wry help with Lorenza's homicidal fantasies, coupled with the tender looks at Sal and the silent "I love you too" was just so endearing. I love remembering that scene.
+ + +
Diana, I too have wondered about Estrella and Nieves. We never hear about Estrella's parents or "abuelita". And they're very similar in that they can't help but come on to... and flirt with every man they meet. Maybe it's just the old psychological truth that we're most offended by people's faults that mirror our own.

At any rate, I want to know more about that millionaire that left Nieves at the altar.

And thanks, both of you, for appreciating the vocab and dichos. You make it all worthwhile.

Good morning Judy, Karen, and Diana. Judy, I hope that you eye infection is clearing up. Your recap is excellent.

I have to admit that I'm even a bit peeved with Coni. I'm not quite ready to declare her beyond redemption, but being pretty and dressing well will only get one so far, but this is un Gancho al Corazón where yesterday's villain can be tomorrow's hero. However, at this moment our beautiful new mutha could use an image consultant.

Doesn't it seem that Mauricio has difficulty with punctuality? He waited for the last minute to get to Moni's fight, and now everyone's waiting at the church for the wedding and he hasn't even showered yet. You'd think with that big honking watch he wears that he would do a better job managing his time.

Like Estrella, I'm having a problem picturing Nieves in that wedding dress. She probably has added on a few pounds since her ill-fated wedding, but they look good on her, and wow, didn't Gabi look appealing. I like her hair pulled back like that.

Carlos

Good morning everyone. Oh no, oh yes, this really was an Oh Crap episode! Thank you Judy for soldiering on with your wonderful recap, even with your eye infection.

Nieves was sweet, Coni was evil, Mau seems to be growing a pair, and Beto is getting lured to the dark side. I agree with Diana, this was a pivotal episode. I feel most sorry for the kids. As usual in these TNs the children are unlucky pawns in the careless and cruel games perpetrated upon them by adults. Their goodbye scene with Mau was heartbreaking. Carlos, excellent point about Mau's watch!

Interesting comments regarding Nieves and Estrella. They are certainly more alike than either of them cares to admit.

Gabi and Sal...didn't she look lovely when she answered the door? Kind of like a buxom and hot-blooded Morticia Addams. Lorenza is another of the characters who has the hots for someone else but insists on staying in a staid and unproductive relationship. However it's doubtful Oski would care for her during her "episodes" as Sal has continued doing, so I suppose that's a good reason to keep him on the hook. Gabi and Sal are absolutely sweet and MUST end up together.

Thanks a million Judy. Your wry title started my day off with a smile and your recap only made it (my smile) get bigger. Great dichos as usual. Thanks amiga!!

Hi Carlos and Sylvia. And thanks for that "big honking watch" doctor. Funny phrase.

Agree with both of you...Gabriela looked ravishing last night. Very elegant with her hair pulled back (better than Morticia Adams any day!) and wouldn't any man melt when she whispered "I love you too"?...nice that this actress gets to play a sympathetic role this time. I understand she's usually cast as someone evil.

Sylvia...I could have written a much shorter recap if I'd just used your" Nieves is sweet, Connie was evil, Mau seems to be growing a pair and Beto's going over to the dark side." That pretty much sums it up. Recap done!

Eye still swollen and sore but hoping to see improvement soon. Surgery last time was not fun, so hoping to avoid it. Think "good thoughts" everybody, por favor.

Oh Judy, I'm so glad you're okay. I couldn't help hopping over the blog fence to check on you. *relieved*

Greetings and hugs, Gancho mates. A sad but important episode you've got here...

Judy, I was thinking that maybe you had a little pink eye, but this is sounding a bit more serious. Please take care of this and for goodness sakes, WEAR THE GOGGLES or better yet, enlist someone else to do your blowing. Tuerta is not a nickname to aspire to.

This wedding has disaster written all over it. I went back and posted a picture with my recap yesterday, so anyone feeling down over the last couple of episodes, scroll down to get a little encouragement of possible good news to come.

Carlos

Judy, thanks for a wonderful, light recap of a somewhat disturbing episode (especially Connie's audacity in threatening to take away the children forever (or maybe she said he'll never see them again) if Mau marries Moni). That threat is similar to the one in Tontas, where Marisa (aka Mariloca) took away Santiago's baby when he wouldn't marry her. Is this any way to get someone who doesn't love you anymore to change? Get over it, Connie.

I agree that Gabi looked beautiful and sexy. The other day, when I saw Moni in her wedding dress, I wanted to be 30 years younger, but now that I'm in love with Gabi, maybe I don't have to be too much younger at all (after all, how old is Sal, anyway?). All this is fantasy, of course as my wife is also beautiful and sexy. But Gabi sure did look good!

Hi Stephe. Thanks for hopping over the fence. I'm enjoying your comments on Sortilegio...and looking forward to the shower scene.

+ + +
Carlos, I'll go back and look at that picture. Need cheering up. No, this isn't pink eye. The last time, the surgery was so icky, the assistants that the doc invited to observe looked totally sick afterwards. And I didn't feel too great either.
+ + +
Hombre, hey, no problem. We know you adore your wife. But I agree, Monita was absolutely divine in her first wedding dress. That hairdo and that beautiful profile (in addition to her figure)...quite a dish.

Gaby last night. Beautiful in a real life way. She could definitely go for you...especially if you sang her a song.

Fun recap. I must say, even when it's a downer day on Gancho, it's nowhere near as low as a regular day on ENDA.

...and, you did get that TERRIFIC scene with Sal and Gabi. I'm a little in love with Salvador myself, and I like how smitten he is with Gabi.

Costeño was also looking super hot, was he not? He cleans up nice.

Judy, praying you don't have to undergo eye surgery again. Please add my voice to those asking you enlist help or wear protective eyewear in the future. We don't want anything to happen to you!

Carlos, went and viewed the picture. Ahhhh - thank you.

Julia, Costeño is indeed hot. Very.

Diana in MA

Oh my, Dr. Carlos. That picture. Makes me think a little Mauricio is on the way already.

+ + +
Julia, point taken! Yes, the worst day on Gancho is still pure sunshine compared to the dark doings on ENDA. And Costeño does "clean up nice" but somehow clothes are a waste on him. He should be minimally covered at all times.

As for Salvador, you'll have to fight me for him...but I think Gaby will beat out both of us. He's mature, wise, but also sexy and funny in my opinion. A real mensch.

+ + +
Diana, thanks for those good thoughts. I realize that I'm impulsive and frequently careless. (not a great driver, either). If you need someone to make a quick decision, I'm your woman. If you need someone to make a CAREFUL decision, better ask someone else.
However....I THINK I'm getting the message.

Judy, Judy, goggle-eyed Judy!! I hope you won't need surgery. Just the words "eye surgery" make me cringe. Plus, you have already paid your dues with that awful dental surgery not so long ago. Under the bed, NOW, and stay there!! Well, peek at the tv...

Great recap in spite of it all. Thanks muchly. We certainly got to see quite a lot of Gabi, I agree that she is beautiful, and 'real'.

Coni is a lost cause. Putting something over on Mauricio is like shooting fish in a barrel, though. Poor guy, it's a wonder he can find his way home!

Costeno might look a bit out of place if he came to the wedding shirtless. That's not to say WE would mind.

I just saw the photo, Carlos. You could be right. I did see her touch her tummy but thought she was just taking a deep breath before going back to reality. But she would have touched her chest then, so.........
Little Mauricio, let's hope he gets his mama's brains!

Ooh...well said. "Putting something over on Mauricio is like shooting fish in a barrel"! I see a possible future episode title there, Emilia.

Okay, Costeño shirtless at the wedding...a bit much. But how about at the reception? Y'know, one can get mighty hot dancing.

I'm sure Dr. Carlos is right about the foreshadowing. For one thing...he's a doctah! And he's been right before on predicting stuff that I pooh-poohed. So now I automatically put my money on anything he says.

Well, one thing about little Mini-Mao is that he should be a very pretty child, but with the bran-power his dad has displayed and his mom only better by comparison, they might as well go ahead and book him a spot on the little bus now.

Carlos

COLD, Carlos!! But funny...

Oh yes, booking a spot on the little bus. Cold, as Mike says. I'm mad at myself for laughing.

Maybe "Baby Einstein" would help.

Was there ever an explanation of how Mauricio came to be a Captain of Industry leading the Sermeno Group?

Is he what our son calls a "Trustafarian?" Was it all handed down to him by his daddy? Or is he just lending his Famous Race Car Driver name to the enterprise for marketing?

And, oh yeah, Gabriela was looking quite elegant last night. I kinda like her hair pulled back like that.

Judy, let me not be remiss in thanking you for another fine recap and hoping your eye gets better and soon!

Judy I'll be praying your eyes heal quickly with no need for surgery.

Julia - You are right. EDNA beats us daily in the downer department. I admire your fortitude.

Ha Carlos both cold and funny. Your comment about Connie " but being pretty and dressing well will only get one so far" tickled me to no end. You have an interesting logic to your enjoyment of Connie that is fun.

I suspect Mauricio either started or continued the business with an inheritance. It's pretty obvious that Salvador is the real brains of the enterprise (they seem to also have a number of competent-looking nameless employees in the background) and Mauricio just shows up to shake hands with the clients and sign contracts and look pretty.

Ditto what everybody else said. I think Mauricio inherited the business from his papa (who had the brains and the business savvy)and since it's a family business, that's why the incompetent and devious Jeronimo is also on the payroll. And evidently Ximena gets an allowance "just because". And Salvador was probably put in place because Papa understood all to well that Mauricio could not handle the job all on his own.

Doesn't Ximena own 10% of the company? I think Mauricio gives her extra money anyway, though, rather than forcing her to live on a budget. He seems to have a great deal of affection for her even while rolling his eyes at her antics.

Just stopping by. I am not keeping up with this novela. One TN is all I can usually manage , and Bill Levy and Marcelo Cordoba have seduced me into making that one Sortilegio. However, I do lurk to read the recaps and comments because I like you folks so much. This blog is like being at a party with friends. Judyb~~~So sorry to hear about your eye troubles. I am sending out very strong good vibrations and sending up prayers.
