Sortilegio #8, 10/15/09: It's All About Pedro

...and fortunately for us, not about Bruno.

From yesterday:

MJ and Alex go back to the hotel room and the dinner for 2 shows up.

Paula talks with her mouth full which makes it even more difficult to understand her and tries to convince her dad to talk to MJ and get her to go through with the marriage for all their sakes.
Wine drinking and laughing leads to some heavy duty making out. Between kisses Alex tries to convince MJ that this is a good thing and they are married so its ok. (Kind of reminds me of the old Meatloaf song Paradise by the Dashboard Light). MJ says something but frankly I'm not paying that much attention to what is being said. Whew! Hose me down. MJ puts a halt on things and sits up and turns away. She says it is too hasty (precipitado) and she's tired. She says there's nothing to say. You've lost your memory and you don't know me. If you only want someone for an adventure that is not me. Alejandro looks a little—frustrated, to say the least. She says if nothing else she has her dignity and stomps out. Alejandro calls himself an imbecil.

Today:

The next day they are having breakfast at the hotel with Pedro who is all gussied up and looking his Sunday best. He goes on and on about how lucky Alejandro is to have a wife so young and beautiful like MJ. Alex agrees. Pedro says the breakfast is so delicious. Paula looks bored and tells her dad that it's just breakfast, so get over it. Pedro is gushing about what a dream it is and how beautiful the place is and the waiters are so attentive. Alex looks amused and reaches over with his fork and stabs some food off of MJ's plate. Why do men do that anyway? I think she needs all the food she can get so knock it off. Pedro apologizes about being so excited and says they are just simple (sencilla) people and aren't used to it. He can't wait to tell his friends all about it. Then he raises his orange juice and makes a toast to the happy couple. Alex says he has to leave because he has some things to do. Pedro again thanks him and Alex tells him he's welcome (no hay de qué). He pays the check and leaves. After he leaves Pedro says what a good man he is. He is very attentive. What good luck for you!

Now we see Alex's real motive for visiting Pedro and that is to do some first rate detecting. He starts by going to the public records office and asks for a copy of the marriage certificate. He looks at it and asks if there are witnesses (testigos) the clerk says yes. He says he would like to look at the book to see the signatures and says he'd like to talk to the judge. Good luck with that! The clerk says that the book is not open to the public but he will go check and be right back. The clerk comes back and says the judge is out of town indefinitely and the book is missing. Alex says thank you and takes his envelope and leaves. He goes to the address of the first witness and finds that it is a public laundry place. He goes to the address of the second witness and asks a man who is sweeping if he knows the witness and he says no. Hmmm, you can see the wheels turning.

MJ and Pedro are walking and talking in the market. He is still singing the praises of Alex and MJ tells him that she's only known him for 2 weeks. Pedro says when he met her mother he knew immediately that she was the one. Pedro asks MJ if Alex suspects anything. MJ doesn't think so. She says something about cat and mouse and I couldn't understand the first part. (Readers, please feel free to fill in the blanks.) This man is good Pedro says and he's educated. He has a respected name. MJ says she doesn't accept the name just to keep them out of jail. It's what you want. I'm ashamed and it is dishonest.

Alex shows up at the house and hands his envelope to the driver who's been keeping a watch over MJ. Alex tells him they will be leaving. Alex asks him if MJ left. Driver says she went to the market with her father. Pedro tells MJ not to worry if she wants to tell Alex the truth when he returns it was all the fault of oh what's his name? Bruno, yeah that's the ticket. Bruno. There's a knock on the door and Alex has returned. He tells her that if she doesn't have any other plans they are going to head home. Paula comes flying in in a huff and says she didn't get accepted back to the school. She'd missed too many classes. Alex asks her what she is studying and she says computers. He tells her that they have a fine school in Mérida and why doesn't she come back with then? Paula is overjoyed. MJ pours cold water on everything and says that her dad can't stay there alone. Pedro says sure I can. Alex comes up with the brilliant idea for Pedro to come to Mérida with them kind of like a vacation. Pedro is ecstatic and Paula starts squealing. Ack! Alex tells them to all get packed so they can leave. Pedro thinks Alex is the cat's meow and just can't stop thanking him. MJ tells him he doesn't have to do all this for her family and he says he wants to. However, his real purpose was to distract everyone so he could grab the picture and stick it down his pants. Maybe if he unbuttoned the button it would help get that picture hidden better. You know, I could help with that. It's not bathing or swimming but a girl has to take what she can get. Uh, sorry, I got distracted.

Back at the Hacienda de Rainbow Brite we see Raquel and Maura playing scrabble with lots of cleavage showing. Maura said something but it was cut off but I think it had something to do with Alexandro. Raquel says he's always busy with work. They gossip about Alex marrying MJ and just can't believe it. Maura says there is proof but Raquel says who knows. He hasn't said much. Maura thinks it is just strange. It's very mysterious. Maura thinks Raquel should ask her mom. Surely her mom will know.

Bruno and Pimp Daddy E (PD for short) are talking and PD says it was an easy plan. Remember when we talked about it at the disco? She was the perfect woman. We flashback to when Bruno first met MJ at the disco. Bruno says your cousin messed everything up. It cost a lot of money. PD wants to know what else they could have done. The car blew up. Could you imagine that Alejandro would survive it? Erik says that Alex has more lives than a cat, and Bruno said that even a cat can die.

In the Hummer Paula in her annoying voice is telling her dad about the house. It's so big and beautiful and each room has its own bathroom. Pedro looks fascinated. Alex is talking to Zeke on the phone and asks him to call Fernando and have him come to the house this evening. He turns and smiles fondly at MJ who is staring out the window.

Victoria and Felipa are talking in the office. Victoria says that when they were children Bruno resented Alex and Raquel was arrogant. I never told them they were the children of Antonio. I didn't want them to think I was an adulteress. Felipa says not to think about it. Vick says I've kept it in all these years. I lived those marvelous years with 3 children and Antonio. One day I will have to give in and tell them. Felipa tells her that she is sure they love her. They will understand. There's a knock at the door. Zeke walks in and says he's sorry to bother her but Joven Alex just called and is on his way home and that he is bringing the father of MJ. She wonders why Alex lied to her about where he was going.

Maura slinks up behind Bruno and wants to know what he is doing there alone. He says nothing, and doesn't look like he wants to talk. Maura wants to know if Alex is back and what does he think of his sister-in-law. Think about what he wants to know. She's got something up her sleeve but he says he's not interested what do you want? You know Alejandro and I were together. He was together with lots of others says Bruno. Maura thinks he didn't marry well. You are in love with her but she's not in love with you. How do you know she's not in love with me? Maura says if you are so sure of your sex appeal I have an opportunity for you. Are they playing “I'll show you mine if you show me yours?” I think Bruno is losing and should really button up that shirt.

They arrive at the house and Pedro just can't imagine being the owner of all this. Congratulations he says to Alex. MJ says she can't believe her father is here and thinks that Bruno is going to be furious. Victoria is talking to Hernan and Fernando and making some hideous flower arrangement. Why didn't he say where he was really going? Fernando says maybe he changed his mind. Victoria says he always justifies what Alex does. Alex introduces everyone and Pedro looks really nervous. Zeke walks up and stops dead in his tracks. I can't quite figure out the look on his face. Is he surprised? Or disgusted? I can't tell. Zeke leaves to get the luggage and show him to the guest house. Victoria says Alex has the right to invite whoever he wants to the house but she doesn't understand why he didn't tell her where he was going. He says MJ doesn't like to be too far from her papa. Victoria's no dummy so she's not buying it.

Pedro is amazed at how beautiful the place is. The lakes and the the gardens. Alex and his family live like kings. Maura walks up to Raquel who is on the other side of the lake and says oh look it's your little sister-in-law. Who is that with her?

Hernan wants to know why Alex lied and he says he had to check out something. What kind of things? I had to find out what was going on. There was a very interesting description of Alejandro Lombardo. Dark hair, strong, young. The same description they gave at the apartment. It's a very different Alejandro Lombardo. I went to look at the marriage license and the witnesses for MJ were her father and her sister. The witnesses for me turned out to not exist. One address was a public laundry and the other never heard of the witness. He said the judge is out of the country indefinitely and he can't check the original signatures since the book is missing. It's very interesting. Fernando thinks someone planned it very well. Alex thinks the accident was no accident. Hernan says it could have been a drunk driver. Alex says (big pause) someone was trying to kill me. No! Really? What was your first clue? Dun, dun, dun Alex asks that they don't say anything and Hernan says if that is what you want, of course.

Paula tries to convince MJ that everything is going to be ok but MJ thinks they might be thrown out of the house. Pedro comes out of the bathroom and just amazed at the bathroom and finds there is beer in the frig. How totally exciting! Pedro is worried that he made a bad impression on Victoria and Alex's friends. MJ reassures him that everything went just fine. Pedro is worried that MJ is so sad. He tells her none of this is her fault. If he finds out I'll tell him it was my fault for everything.

Fernando doesn't want to say anything to Victoria and for certain doesn't want Bruno to find out the latest news. Fernando doesn't think it is Pedro but he is sure there is another accomplice, If MJ was a cold calculating woman she could convince me that she was my woman. She could have another side. Fernando thinks that if they accept that plan then she could convince him they were married. Do you have confidence in her? Perhaps. Alex says that is exactly what I was thinking. Too many times she was afraid. Very afraid. There were things that if they were discovered the blame could fall on the family. Alex wants to know what is going on so that is why he invited the father here. Fernando says that we know the man is tall, strong, with dark hair, knows your signature and knows when you are coming and going. He hates you and wants you dead. They both come to the conclusion that Bruno fits the description. Duh! No kidding. Fernando wants him to be careful and think of the scandal this would cause to the family. And most importantly think what it would do to Victoria. Alex says a scandal doesn't interest him. I think of my mother all the time. Fernando says he does too. Hmmmm, that's interesting! Alex pulls the picture out of the desk and gives it to Fernando and asks him to check it out. Fernando leaves and runs into Victoria in the garden. She wants to know what the boys were talking about. Fernando tries to shovel some BS her way but she is way too smart for that. Tell me the truth. I have to know what is going on. He tries to convince her that everything is normal but she knows better and says nothing is normal. She says they met in Cancun, she's always nervous and they are never together. You know and I'm not stupid. I have to know what is going on. You are my friend. He still tries to get her to believe everything is fine but she says this is her family and she has a right to know what is going on. Maura is slinking around in the background trying to listen to every word. Fernando gives Victoria a hug and looks at her with those puppy dog eyes and says he understands completely. He says forgive me and gives her a kiss on the cheek.

Raquel barges in and demands that Zeke tell her who was with MJ. He tells her it was MJ's father. Raquel wants to know why the father of this woman is here. Like it is really any of her business. Victoria says he is here for a visit. Raquel makes an insulting remark just as MJ walks by. Upset, MJ runs up the stairs. Alex wants to know what happened and asks Raquel what she said. Of course, she said denies saying anything. She was just talking to her mom and MJ walked by. Nothing really. Mentirosa! Alex comforts MJ and wants to know what was said. She says it was just the truth and she has no business being there much less her dad. She wants to leave. She says his sister is ashamed of her and doesn't want them there. Did you bring him here to make a fool out of him? He grabs her by the hand and drags her downstairs. He grabs Raquel and tells her she has to apologize. We get a quick perdon and Raquel runs off and MJ goes back upstairs.

Bruno, apparently not remembering Alex's threat from the other day, barges in MJ's bedroom and catches her as she's starting to undress and says why haven't you talked to me yet? What was Alex doing snooping around? She says he didn't tell her anything. Why didn't you call me? MJ says she didn't have time. Let's go, we have to talk. She says no. He says ok we will talk here as he plants himself in a chair. Don't tell me you are in love with him. He's a thousand times better than you. We get a split screen with Alex in his room and MJ and her dad and Bruno in the other. Bruno is talking so loud that Alex can hear him through the wall. Bruno wants to know what Pedro is doing here and Pedro says as he's holding the beautiful flowers that he's picked for MJ says it is all his fault. MJ had nothing to do with it. MJ says let's talk somewhere else and Bruno manhandles her and they walk off. Just as they are exiting stage left, Alex enters stage right and wants to know where they are going. Pedro says I don't know. I don't know anything. Alex wants to know what happened and Pedro says he doesn't know. He wasn't paying attention. Alex says this was the first time you've met Bruno right? Pedro says that he hadn't had the pleasure before. Alex says he understands that Bruno is the one who gave him the 411 that he was dead. Pedro is impactado. Dun, dun, dun.

Tomorrow: Bruno acts like a jerk.

Happy Friday everybody! I had some scenes that no matter how many times I replayed it I couldn't understand what they were saying. Feel free to add any info I left out.

If this posted to the wrong place, can someone post it for me where it belongs? Thanks.

HI Connie, I posted your recap to the sidebar. (Remember to add the name of the show and date to the title - I did it for you.) Thanks!

Thanks Melinama. Let me know what I need to do to post it to the sidebar next time. I'm still kind of new at this. 8(:-)

Thanks for hanging in there through the frustration, Connie, and helping us out with your recap. Happy Friday to you, too.

Aaaah. Praise Peter, Paul and Mary that some of our lovebirds' heavy petting was on replay at the beginning. I was letting off steam like a radiator. Yum-nummy.

I couldn't believe how well Papi Pedro cleaned up in that suit and tie. If it weren't for his constant freaking and gushing at all things expensive, shiny, and new, you might not have realized how low-class he was. Good grief. When in Rome, Papi... ! (BTW, why was Ezekiel so shocked to see him?)

More good detective work by P.I. Lombardo. Heheh.

Maybe if he unbuttoned the button it would help get that picture hidden better. You know, I could help with that. LOL!

Erick is beginning to amass quite a few names here on the CarayBlog. I might have to start keeping a list. Pimp Daddy E (Connie). Mr. Saturday Night Fever (me). Who called him Red Bottoms, and Baboon Bottoms, again? LMAO

Nando and Vicky's lips were awfully close with that kiss! What the heck was a girl of Maura's snobbery and high-classedness doing skulking around in Casa Lombardo's shrubbery at night, dear writers? That was a little too convenient--and lazy--of you.

Alex says he understands that Bruno is the one who gave him the 411 that he was dead. Pedro is impactada. Dun, dun, dun. Oh man, Papi, you really stepped in it there.

Dear Alejandro: Come on out to Atlanta, order us dinner for two, pop open some bubbly, and sit on my living floor with me while I get all giggly. I'll let you be an imbecil.

Mmm. Methinks I need something strong in my coffee this morning.

Connie: Excellent and fun summary. You are a natural recapper. thanks for the embedded vocabulary.

It's a tribute to the actors and Carla Estrada that this is moving fairly well while keeping our interest, especially as the storyline has focused almost exclusively on MJ/Alex/Bruno. The palpable chemistry of MJ and Alex and the total hawtness of William Levy doesn't hurt either. :)

I also couldn't figure out Zeke's reaction to Pedro. Of course, the biggest question is how Victoria got saddled with 2 such horrible kids.

Diana in MA

Hi Connie. I was out of town last Thursday and missed your debut, but love your recapping style. With your down to earth humor, you are a natural.

As to some of your questions: MJ was worried that Alexander was just playing a "cat and mouse game" with her. That's why she's so nervous.

And nasty Raquel quipped that MJ's father looked like a "pordiosero" (beggar). Later she makes the same remark where MJ can hear, remarking that the place is turning into a beggar's hospice with all these lower class types on the premises.

I think MJ can handle snotty treatment, but hearing her father dissed was just too painful.

SO GLAD Carla Estrada has the good sense to put some hot scenes in every episode. The trouble with MEPS was that there were long stretches without any smouldering, longing, yearning looks between Fernand and Eduardo...much less any kissing and unbuttoning. Way to go Ms. Estrada! Keep up the good work.

Oh and when oversexed Maura said she had a job for Bruno, I think she meant...go after MJ and get her away from Alexander. Of course there's no way that dip can manage that.

I'm glad it wasn'tjust me that noticed Zeke's reaction. I replayed it a couple of times just to be sure. It was almost like he'd seen him before and didn't want him there.

Connie, you are such an excellent recapper!

Surely, Alejandro is about to blow open Bruno's evil plot. Then I wonder if MJ will finally come clean. Alejandro will forgive and protect her, and they take it from there. She can't possibly keep up this lie for many more episodes. I'm exhausted just watching her try. This part of the story has run its course.

Indeed it was. Not good.

(ooops, my previous comment was directed at Connie's comment about Ezekiel and Papi)

So if they figure out that Bruno set this whole thing up (which it looks like they will) what will they do about it? If he's arrested that's pretty much the whole show so there has to be something else in the works. Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

Thanks for the recap and vocab Connie. As Diana said, you are a natural at this (and its only your second one).

I also noticed Zeke's shocked look. A guess this is another mystery to unravel.

Stephe - you continue to crack me up with your letter to Alex

Judy - ITA with you about the regularity of the love scenes. Carla knows what her audience wants and it may be a while before MJ actually confesses.

One of the things that Alex said in the conversation about MJ, was that if she were a cold calculating woman (capable of willingly being part of such a scam), then she would have had sex with him already to convince him that they were really married. So, MJ is right that he has been playing a cat and mouse game with her.

The cat theme came through again when Bruno and Erik were talking about how perfect the original plan was. Erik said that Alex had more lives than a cat, and Bruno said that even a cat can die.

I feel so sorry for MJ. Pressure on all sides. She did have good instincts though to moved the conversation with Bruno out of her room (where she was half undressed) and into the common hallway between the bedrooms. She wasn't taking any chances that he would feel comfortable enough to haul off and slap her again. But alas, he man handles her into a more private location anyway.

-Vivi in DC

Thanks for the correction Vivi. I was having a hard time hearing what they were saying.

What the heck was Victoria doing in these two monsters in their formulative years. They are really horrible. Pimp daddy Erick scouted MJ for Bruno? He should have picked Paula then. Bruno any appeal you had with MJ you lost when admitted yu weren't Alejandro. Then when you pimp slap her the other night well don't think you're going to get some loving anytime soon.

Thanks, Connie. I got lost when Alex was tracking down witnesses and when Pedro first got to the manse. So thanks for filling that in for me.

I'm thinking Bruno and Maura will somehow become partners in crime soon, as often happens when there's a shared interest in breaking up a couple. Bruno wants MJ and Maura wants Alex, so they have a common goal there.

It's getting better and better.

Now if chipmunk Paula can just be off to school a lot...

Those aren't 'puppy dog eyes' Fernando is flashing at Vicki... they're the eyes of a full-grown hound dog getting ready to jump the fence! AJ's going to freak!

Zeke probably has run into Pedro hustling on the counterfit antiques circuit. Or maybe at an AARP convention.

Paula and Evil Erick (PD) will probably hook-up in the servant's quarters soon.

I'm just hoping the male-on-female violence stops soon. Watching that creep Brono slap the leading lady is disturbing... and probably impactado on any youngsters peeking at the show. (Female-on-female, female-on-male and male-on-male however, are ok with me.)

El Santo de las Teleovelas

It is curious as to where this is going. It seems like once Bruno's tricks are out of the bag (and they seem close to figuring it out), there's nowhere to go. Do you just leave an attempted murderer live on in the mansion? Sort of like Anibal .. attempts murder (actually believes the deed was done) then only has to clean up after vacas as punishment.

El Santo, I'm with you. Just once I'd like to see one of our leading ladies recover from a slap and get up and beat the snot out of the guy. Works for me.

Why is it in most of these novelas when the family is rich. They try to avoid or are worried about how people will look at the family while harbouring an murderer or rapist see MEPS Camilo. Don't want to have these people bought to justice quickly. Then the crimes keep escalating and the body count keeps growing. Do really believe Bruno will stop his nonsense with all his pent up resentment towards Antonio and Alejandro?

Thanks for the recap Connie. I also think that Ezequiel thought that Pedro looked familiar then he kept quiet about it.

I think Mexican families have a deep sense of pride and culturally, the well to do families would like to avoid scandal to save face. That is why these things are swept under the rug. The mindset is different than an American mindset. You will notice in almost all novelas that they will do things under the table just to avoid scandal.

Being disgraced publicly is the worst thing that you can do to them. Other than killing them all off of course.

Ibarramedia

It would make sense if they throw Bruno out after finding out the truth, I can't imagine he'll continue living with them and having potentially more opportunities to think something up.

Re violence, IMO any sort of violence is not okay, including female on male. It is a lot more disturbing when it's a man slapping the leading lady, since there is more force, but I also hate it when the leading ladies go around slapping their partners the entire show as well every time there is a twist in the plot.

and thanks so much for the recap Connie, you are wonderful! it was a great addition to my coffee break at work this morning.

I don't want the females hurt. I'm old school in that. Maybe a little to chivalrous for my own good. But violence in general I guess i'm desensitized to already. Do you guys watch Criminal Minds, Law and Order SVU, All the CSIs? There are far more graphic and violent scenes there.

Ibarramedia

I don't think a person should go around smacking people willy nilly like Gabriella did in FELS. However, I do think a person has the right to defend themselves.

With all the battered women impacted these days, I think the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) frowns on broadcasters who "desensitize" viewers with such offensive behavior. Like it's ok for men to assault women? Rape scene may be in store next for one of our gals.
Anyhow, it sort of makes me cringe when I see it, especially the men hitting the women. yuk!

What is the family business? I'm sure we've said before but can't remember. Was it real estate? Why doesn't Bruno have to work?

Connie- I think it is real estate. Bruno is a VP at the company and does work (although I don't think he works very hard), but he has claimed that he is on vacation the last few weeks- at first he was going to use that vacation to marry MJ, seal the deal, make her fall for him even harder, and then arrange the demise of Alex. Then Alex's trip got moved up, so Bruno had to move up his scheme, without having the chance to seal the deal with MJ. No he keeps insisting he's still on vacation so that he can hang around and keep an eye on things (especially MJ).

It's Raquel's husband who doesn't even pretend that he works. :)

-Vivi in DC

Yes, I think it is real estate too. They just never seem to do anything.

There is a reason why we sometimes see a pg-13 logo right before a show starts. I'm all for a realistic portrayal in shows and sometimes there has to be violence to fit the story or scene. It is just my preference that I don't want to see females hurt. this is not the 60's or 70's where things were not so graphic.

A lot of critically acclaimed shows are edgy in that there is more portrayal of violence and salty language because they want it to be as realistic as possible.

Ibarramedia

Yeah, I think Fernando at least is an architect and they are in the construction business. Not sure what Alejandro is -- structural engineer would be my guess. The question here is -- what is Bruno, if he never graduated from the university!

I have never seen a woman being slapped by a man on American broadcast TV. Televisa gets away with it for now until someone files a complaint with the FCC. (Not me)Then you will see Univision Network's locally licensed broadcasters either edit it out or face hefty fines.
It is completely unacceptable.

Maybe not slapped lately. But killed or hurt using weapons. And in SVU there are a lot of rape scenes because it is after all a show about the Special victims unit....

Ibarramedia

Connie~~~You rock. I knew that you'd make a great recapper because your comments are always interesting. Did Raq slap Rob across the face last night , or was I just dreaming ? She nearly knocked his soul patch loose. I can't figure out where this is headed. Al seems to have pretty much figured out what's happening. Now what ? I think Bruno's criteria for someone to marry ''Al'' was a girl who seemed submissive and easy to contro;. I guess MJ was sitting quietly at the disco nursing a Marguerita, and Bruno decided on her. I don't think that he loved her, but now that he sees Al attracted to her...He wants her...Like a 2-year-old, he's thinking, ''Mine.'' What-a-jerk. Button up and get a job. Will he try to kill Al again ? I feel for Pedro. He seems so happy to think that his daughter might have found someone who will love her and give her all the material things that he's never been able to give her. He was so pathetically grateful to Al for the breakfast in the fancy hotel and the offer to vacation at his home. Sister, on the other hand, acts like she's a spoiled rich girl.

Excellent recap, Connie. You have great style.

I saw that the Rainbow Brite doll is being released again, and boy, is she looking slutty these days. I think she really has been hanging out at the Rainbow Manse with Raquel and Maura!

Great recap, Connie!

I know Paula is not pure like MJ, and she does seem a little childish at times, but I like the way she fills out her outfits!

When Alejandro came on too strong with MJ, and called himself an imbecile, it reminded me of a similar scene in Pasion (also produced by Carla Estrada), when Ricardo came on too strong with Camila, and I think also called himself an imbecile. But of course later, he found just the right balance, and I'm sure Alejandro will, too.

Sorry, I totally left that out. I forgot all about Raquel smacking Roberto. I think he broke his glass on the floor after that.

Thanks for the recap! I agree that they can't drag the secret out too much longer and I don't see where there is to go, either. All the slapping is surprising to me but I am new to these telenovelas. Not saying I necessarily have a problem with it, there is certainly tons of violence on TV anyway. But I think these just affect us more because they seem so much more personal - more real in a way because we know the characters.

You are correct Connie. He smashed his glass on the floor after getting slapped. Probably wanted to retaliate but did not. just smashed the glass out of frustration.

Ibarramedia

I guess the difference between American TV and Mexican TV (as I see it anyway) is that if a guy slapped a woman on American TV, she would get up and shoot his nuts off.

Thanks, Connie, for a great recap. I had a hard time understanding several of the characters, esp. Maura and Raquel.
I thought the Lombardos were a family owned construction/development business, sort of like a Bechtel. That would make Alex an engineer (probably) and maybe Bruno is handling the business development side of the business. The family is so connected he could manage that even without a degree.

Thanks Connie..You are a natural. Your recap has a running feel like Carla Estrada's camera work, quick and clever.

On the "violence", I'll never forget seeing FC (Miguel?)push a pregnant AN (Matilde ?)in Amor Real. It was shocking at the time. In US dramas the hero would never push a pregnant woman. On the other hand in the way they sanitize heros has a fakeness to it!

Sandy in TN

I did too so I'm sorry if those conversations weren't detailed enough.

Alejandro is CEO of the company. they don't spell that out but it is understood. He does not have to be an engineer or Architect to run the business side of the company. He can hire all those other hands on guys. Just like Donald Trump.

Ibarramedia

If Alex is a structural engineer I will love him even more (since that is my job, and it's vastly underrepresented on American TV). It's the thing that also endeared me to Guapos Al...the family on that show also owned a construction/real estate development company, and the protagonist was a structural engineer and his best buddy was an architect.

It's highly likely, though, that his studies were in business or real estate development. Engineering school trains you with pretty specific skills which don't necessarily translate well to management.

Connie, did you watch Criminal Minds this past wednesday? the 3 serial killers used power tools to impale, disfigure their vitims. One of which was female. So they may not have slapped, but the graphic visual of the damage done with power tools and a lot, I mean a lot of blood should tell you something.

Ibarramedia

I didn't see that one Ibarramedia. Maybe I'll have to watch it.

Connie, thanks for the recap, I always enjoy you take on things.

Somewhere I read that Alex was industrialist in construction, like his father.

Connie (and Dipity) - great recapping jobs. Thanks! So much to read and so little time this week. --Lot's of Chipmunk spoken in this novela, just like the beginning of MEPS had. Rough to translate, especially with the CC's going haywire again these last two nights.

I'm ready for a catfight or two. Raquel and Mau are just cruisin' for a good brusin'. Sooner or later Pau may light into one or the other of them. Can't wait.

I would have prefered the actress who plays Maura Ana Brenda Contreras to play Raquel and someone else play Maura. How old is Chantel Andere in her mid forties?

Chantal is 37 and the character she is playing is now 32, so not much different in age. Way closer in age than many of the TNs I've seen. :) Maura would perhaps be way too young to be hanging with Raquel. :)

She the daughter of the actress who played the evil step mother in Peregrina right? I think her name is Jacqueline Andere i'm not sure though. Really she's only 37 maybe it's the make up or lighting but she does look older than part she is playing.

Maura's hanging around for some reason, and not going away though she doesn't live at the Casa, and I think we can all guess why. When whatever it is separates MJ and Alex's newly found love whenever that happens, Ms. Thing will step right back in to comfort Alex and become the gloating fixture in his bed. I am NOT looking forward to that, but with 95 capitulos and us only at the beginning, I will be shocked if that isn't in the script.

El Santo said: Zeke probably has run into Pedro hustling on the counterfit antiques circuit. Or maybe at an AARP convention. LOL!

Yes, The Secret can't be dragged out for much longer, I agree. And that scares me because we are only at the end of the second week. Bigger trouble has to be coming to keep the story going. Either the Big Secret won't come out because of a Bigger Secret, or something really sh!tty is about to hit us out of left field. (I haven't been watching ahead, I swear! I just have a bad feeling. And I'm a writer--I put characters through hell on a daily basis and I know the signs. Yikes. Heck, y'all know the signs--you're all Novela pros!)

LOL @ Julia. Yes, that does seem to be the trend nowadays--showing little girls how to sex themselves up and be in the clique. :(

The "anti-hero" is pretty big on American TV these days. The hit man/enforcer with a conscience and a heart of gold, the crime lord who is vulnerable and lonely, the mob prince with compassion, etc. Well, they're kind of everywhere, now that I'm thinking about it... I just finished a Korean drama with a successful exortionist/gigolo who went to that life to pay his little girl's hospital bills (she suffered 6 years with leukemia). All of these antiheroes have huge followings, legions of fans who love them, though they are high-end criminals.

Um... I have seen many women get punched and beaten down on American TV. I see it all the time. ??

Stephe How are you able to follow the Koreanovelas? Do they have subtitles? Do they have a Korean version of Caray?

Ibarramedia

Stephe: Is the "anti-hero" the same as a "tragic hero" or not? Curious, because it's a term I learned about over three decades ago (way too many to have kept it clearly defined) in a high school English Lit. class. I think of The Shield which I used to watch religiously until the last and final season. Got too boring and never did see what finally became of the main cop who was that kind of anti-hero also.

OT:
Jardinera, a couple of wiki takes on heroes:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antihero

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragic_hero

Tragic and Anti are different.

Jardinera, I saw the end of the Shield because my son was a big fan and always watched it. Basically, everything fell apart and Vic ended up still on the force, but totally restricted and shut up in a back room shuffling paperwork. Not a happy ending for a guy with his temperment.

Shield comment from La Paloma.

Connie, sorry to be so late. Let me just say that you have such natural talent and a genuine persona. Absolutely a great job. I was in a jocular mood after watching un Gancho al Corazón and catching up on the comments, I can't stop laughing. First el Santo (welcome to our study group):

Zeke probably has run into Pedro hustling on the counterfit antiques circuit. Or maybe at an AARP convention.

Then you:

"I guess the difference between American TV and Mexican TV (as I see it anyway) is that if a guy slapped a woman on American TV, she would get up and shoot his nuts off."

Thanks!

Carlos

Korean dramas or novelas have english sub titles already with show. Well most of them do. They have several sites sort of like youtube. where you can watch these dramas with english subtitles already done for you. One example is mysoju.com. I believe Maura is totally pissed that she didn't get to be Mrs.Alejandro Lombardo and she will probably look for anyway possible to break them up. She has already approached Bruno about an offer already. Bruno is so burned now that Alex said he will keep MJ. We'll see what happens.

Thanks for the assist, JeffMN. :) Jardinera, the way I understand it, the tragic hero is still bound by strict "hero code" and is thus still "pure" of mind and body through and through; tragedy happens to him. The anti-hero is someone who wouldn't be thought of as pure in a gazillion years, who somehow manages to steal your compassion or heart anyway; he causes tragedy. A serial killer, for instance, like the Showtime channel's DEXTER.

The main cop on The Shield was definitely an anti-hero. Right on! So, the first one is still a real hero, the second one is the exact opposite of a real hero.

And thanks for your assist, too, Anon 11:25! Ibarramedia: KBS is South Korea's major TV outlet, and KBS World is geared towards English speakers interested in KBS shows. The shows are hard-subtitled in English and then broadcast. There are several sites online where you can also watch them, but unfortunately, no Korean CARAY-like blogs. (but with English subtitles, there is no question about what is happening anyway) I'm also trying to learn Korean. I love how it and Spanish roll romantically off the tongue, at least to my ears, ha.

I am shocked at how quickly I got roped in to this telenovela. I was never a fan of William Levy but now I cannot get over how HOT he is and how great the chemistry is between JB and him. I would never have predicted that! I just hope we don't have to see a disproportionate amount of evil. I never even noticed JB's teeth issue and I really hope I don't get distracted by it now after reading all these blog comments. She is clearly very beautiful, just way too thin. I think it's mostly her body frame. People like that can just not take much food in at one time because they get bloated. I say, let's enjoy the beauty of these protagonists along with the great chemistry and forget about the flaws.

Is Lombardo a Spanish name? All the Lombardo's I know are Italian.
Just wondering...

Gracias, Connie, for the recap. I'm just getting caught up now, but wanted to express my appreciation. I'm so with you on the hiding of the picture! Mr. 5ft, of course, was more focused on how the picture was going to get crushed, making it harder to analyze. Men!

Great recap Connie! I am lovin this show!!!!
