Sortilegio 01/15/10-- MJ Awakes: Looking Through the Looking Glass From the Inside Out
Capítulo 73
[I owe the making of this recap to the likes of Evan Williams Honey Liqueur, benadryl, ibuprofen, extra strenth cold capsules, and lots and lots of trees who gave their lives for my box and a half of Kleenex, without which I could not have made it through the show, let alone written the recap. --ed.]
Downstairs in her office, Victoria and Fernando are commiserating over Alex's dodgy temperament and the family's current quandary. Fer mentions that Dr. Hernan told him about Maura's sister, Lisett, now suffering from Leukemia; Mau won't be able to be of much help with the authorities as a result. Vicki empathizes and then bemoans the fact that everyone's got problems. She blames herself for past acts and says this is her punishment from on high. "No sooner do we get over one misfortune than we have another one to deal with. It makes you wonder if you can handle it." Nando doesn't agree she's being punished for errors in the past. She says, then those in the present. He says if anything, their fling was meaningless and they were together only once and it came to nothing, so he doesn't feel it's that either. Anyway, as always, he'll be there to help her out forever and always if she should need him. They hug. (However, Viewerville is spared another priss-kiss.)
Zeke calls Alex from the kitchen to see to see if he wants anything to eat, but Alex is too distraught. Zeke tells Felipa and the cook that Alex isn't hungry. This starts a discussion about the thoughtlessness and arrogance of money grubbing kidnappers who think they are too smart to be caught but who will eventually be caught and humiliated in the press. Felipa thinks Bruno might have had a hand in this calamity, but Zeke disagrees. "Not everything is Bruno's fault, just like the business with the knife that Sr. Alex tried hiding was not his doing." They agree that Sr. Alex and the baby will have a hard time making it without Sra. Mary Jo around.
Upstairs Rosie notes that Tony won't take his formula because he misses his mother. Alex takes the baby to his/their bedroom and feeds him, then sleeps with him on the bed there.
A week passes and nothing's changed. Dr. Hernan comes to visit with Vicki. He complains that he and Fernando can only do so much with the business. Alex needs to get his head together and to return to work. There are things only he can handle that are waiting for him to take care of. Talk turns to Lis and Hernan says Maura's donating bone marrow for a transplant. He then mentions that he had thought Bruno might have had a hand in MJ's disappearance. Vicki admits she did also, but for his part, Bruno has been there all week and at the ready for anything they might want. (What? Suddenly they're ignorant about cell phones, texting, instant messaging and web-cams?) They share a close, compassionate moment of "Woe is we."
Next day at Jorge's clinic Elena and he are watching Mary Jo asleep with wires attached all over her head. Elena says she's about to wake up finally. Jorge says it's about time, and when she does she will be just fine. They plan to take her back to the rancho the next day.
Meanwhile, Fer visits Alex and gives him a pep talk about getting his wits about him; being a fighter rather than a helpless wimp; and keeping his chin up because others are counting on him for their livelihood. Alex whines that he's a mess and there's not a minute that passes that he doesn't think about Mary Jo. (Seems kvetching is catching.) Mr. Macho is now a crumpled up, slobbering and pathetic crybaby. He's angry that he hasn't heard from the kidnappers yet. It's been a week after all. He's worried they brutally abused her in ways he doesn't even want to imagine and then killed her. Fernando says, whatever they did to her, she will withstand it and survive it all. They share a brotherly hug. Suddenly the phone rings and Alex grabs the receiver.
The kidnapper wants $5 million. As Alex begins yelling at the voice on the other side of the line, Seagull races in to direct the call. Alex totally ignores him. He screams at the "kidnapper" and tells him he wants to hear MJ's voice before he hands over $5 million. The line goes dead. They have nothing to go on. Fernando checks the caller ID on the phone and says it was from MJ's cell phone. (Ok. Track the cell and tower number and get the general area at least, right? Don't you all follow the cop shows from the States?) Seagull is fit to be tied. They'll have to wait for another call now.
Jorge calls Bruno to let him know how the ransom call went. Bruno's impressed the guy actually asked for $5 million, but Jorge says no biggie since he doesn't plan to collect. The money would be marked and he's not about to risk it. Besides, Sandra's inheritance is much larger anyway. Bruno asks again about Mary Jo's progress. He wants to visit. Jorge doesn't get it. Bruno reminds him he told them they were emotionally involved.
Downstairs at Casota de lobos locos de los Lombardo, Seagull complains to Vicki about how Alex screwed up the ransom call. She agrees he's not the right one to handle it if another call comes in. Alex appears at the breakfast table then, still in his P.J.'s. He agrees that he probably did screw up the call. They tell him nix the attitude or they will have to find a new negotiator.
Jorge is still on the phone with Bruno. Jorge says he didn't realize that he and MJ were involved; he only thought Bruno assisted to upset his brother by separating him from his wife. Bruno says no; he wants her for himself. Jorge says they'll have to discuss it later. He hangs up obviously thinking this adds another wrinkle in the plan--or maybe not.
Seagull and Fer take a walk out on the grounds. Nando wonders why the kidnapper didn't warn Alex not to go to the police. Seagull thinks either the guy isn't part of an organized criminal gang or Mary Jo is dead. Fernando is OMG! impactado to have to even consider it. Seagull says they'll simply have to wait for another call.
Back inside Hernan does a quick physical on Alex. His blood pressure's gone way too high for a man his age. He gives Alex a pill with a lecture about getting himself under control. Otherwise, he warns him, things will go to Hell in a hand basket for him and MJ. Vicki then asks him about Lisett's therapy. It's not had time to show much success, says Hernan, but next week the girl will get her transplant and that could saver her. Hernan asks about Raqhell. Vicki says she continues to drink and to wait for Useless Uli to come back to her. She adds that Roberto figures they guy left the country, but that Raqhell still won't give up hope.
Mary Jo finally comes to in Sandra's room at Goonyland Ranch. MJ is suffering from --duhn, duhn, duhn, duhnnn!-- a bout of amnesia. She immediately asks where she is and who Elena is. Elena feeds her the line that she's her daughter (true) and that her name is Sandra (not true). She doesn't remember anything or anyone. Jorge comes in with a syringe. MJ is scared and asks who he is. Jorge tells her he's her step-daddy. She's totally confused. He gives her a shot. She passes out. Elena says she doesn't think the treatment worked on her. Jorge says of course it will. They just have to be patient. Elena asks but what if it doesn't? Jorge simply insists that it will!
That night Porferio and Tio Abuelo Emiliano, are playing chess together. Porfi gripes that he thinks Jorge's been toying with him over Sandra because it's high time she showed up for that visit. Emiliano says not to get his panties in a wad 'cause more than likely, with his nasty disposition, Sandra may not be in the mood to visit him. Porfi asks Emiliano about his niece and nephew. Emiliano admits they haven't been in touch with him for a while, either. "See! They're all the same. Ingrates!"
Jorge shows up. The gate was open. Porfi accuses him of sneeking in. Jorge ignores the barbed insult and says that Elena's under the weather with a cold so she couldn't visit. Porfi snorts. He could give a fig. Emiliano offers him a drink but Jorge declines, saying he's got a problem patient to tend to now. Porfi sneers that his patients don't even pay him. "No! I'm the one that pays!" Obviously used to this kind of verbal abuse, Jorge stands straight as a pillar and says nothing. Emiliano takes up for him and says it's too expensive for these people to get neurology treatment. Therefore, what Jorge does is praiseworthy. Porfi sneers again. "Yes he's a bright shining light to everybody else but his family and me." [That's what I could gather from the phrase and "candil" = an oil lamp]. He changes the subject abruptly and asks where his granddaughter is. "--She'll be here next week." Porfi's delighted and tells Emiliano he's throwing a major party [charreado=public festivity] complete with a BBQ for her to celebrate.
Jorge says Sandra's still recuperating so she won't be up for a party like that, much less, able to attend one. Porfi says tough, he doing it anyway. He tells Emiliano that he'd like Fernando and Katia there also. He thinks it wouldn't be a bad idea for Fernando to come since the guy would make a decent husband for his granddaughter. Jorge says Sandra already has a boyfriend. Porfi laughs. "Who? Some bum who's after her inheritance?" Jorge says he's a serious prospect. Porfi sneers again. "Serious! Serious? Who's "serious" in this day and age? Ha!" He lets out with another major guffaw and slugs down another tequila.
Back home at Goonyland Ranch the next morning, Jorge tells Elena about the fiesta and BBQ her ex-FIL is planning for Sandra and says that Porfi's interested in marrying her to Fernando, Emiliano's nephew. "This will complicate matters because they know each other and he works for Alex Lombardo." She wants to know why he doesn't already have a plan B for this? He planned it and should have a solution for the problem. He says it's her fault for getting so chummy with that brat [Katia] to begin with. "Just fix the problem, Jorge!" More blame games from Jorge: "It was your brainy idea to say we could substitute her for her twin. Now look where we are and the mess we're in! I should never have paid attention to you!"
Elena gives as good as she gets under fire. "You accepted, didn't you? To save your clinic, because you are nothing and nobody without your experiments and that clinic! You've got an over-sized ego; you're a man with a superiority complex. Well, if you're so smart, you fix it! Period!" She leaves him cursing at shadows.
Upstairs, Elena looks in on M.J. The maid offers to sleep there during the night and let her know if anything changes.
At the Lombardo's later that night, Rosie the nurse takes Tony off the bed to feed him his pablum while Alex sleeps. Alex is dreaming of better bedtime stories he and Mary Jo starred in in the past. He suddenly wakes up and realizes Tony is gone. He races into his room and finds Rosie in there feeding Tony. Alex takes the baby and feeds him himself. (I'm wondering if the kid has suddenly lost his appetite having to smell ripe ol' papa like that.) Rosie apologizes for the scare and explains that she was only doing what they hired her to do.
The next morning Vicki comes in to speak to Alex and give him another major pep talk. He can't continue like this or it will be bad for the baby yada, yada..... Everybody's worried about him and Tony, yada, yada..... She tells him he's too strong to let this destroy him. Alex has a big cry on her shoulders as he tells her his strength was taken along with Mary Jo. However, after the big cry, Alex does return to work that same day.
Outside the house, Seagull tells Felipa and Vicki that his people have been checking with the neighbors and the realty company's employees. Bruno is skulking around the side of the house, listening. It seems a neighbor witnessed two dark trucks parked in the drive at the scene of the crime, but didn't get either the make or the license plates. He tells the two women that he believes the kidnapper isn't part of a criminal gang. He assures them that he and his people won't give up until they find them.
We return to Goonyland Ranch where Elena and MJ are in the garden clipping and snipping. MJ's got on some of Elena's larger stuff. No problem. They'll go shopping in Toluca or Mexico City later for clothes. Elena feeds her a line that M. J.'s lived there at the ranch since she was 5. M.J. of course doesn't remember any of it. She asks why she went to Spain. Elena answers that she wanted to. She was there studying for an art degree.
At the lab there's a call from Bruno. Bruno tells Jorge the insurance investigator hasn't stopped looking for MJ even though he thought he would have by now. Jorge says they won't find anything. Bruno says he's got an idea how to stop the investigation because if they don't, Alex is a regular bulldog [perro de presa] and won't give up until he's found something conclusive.
Later, back in the tiny clinic room, the attending doctor tells Jorge that Sandra should have either regained consciousness by now or gone brain-dead. She hasn't done either. Jorge tells him as long as she remains like this to have Nurse Ramirez tell the others that this area is restricted.
Mary Jo's subconscious rebels and she screams back that it's not true. It's impossible! Jorge lights into her again. "You are a pathetic wretch! A drug addict! We brought you back here at great expense. This is the price you paid for your perversities!" She continues to scream and to cry in protest. (This may be terribly cathartic for George, but it isn't exactly endearing the" new and improved" Sandra to him or her new lifestyle.)
Elena signals for Jorge to ix-nay the ecture-lay already and to reel it in a bit. He objects at the top of his lungs and screams into MJ's ear that it's time she put her feet on the ground and recognized how much this foolishness cost them and her so that she doesn't repeat it. (No way they're gonna turn that frown upside down.) He orders Elena then to give her a tranquilizer and leaves as Viewerville asks itself if the look in Elena's eye means she might have read "The Burning Bed" and is a believer.)
That night at dinner, Jorge asks if Elena Thinks M.J. is ready [presumably for the ruse]. Elena is certain she is and says they can't go putting off the meeting any longer, anyway. MJ/Sandra comes down to eat. Jorge remarks she's gotten new clothes and Elena says, yes, she chose them herself. (They're definitely not Sandra's style and definitely an improvement.) Jorge explains she won't be given wine at dinner because it would interfere with the medicine; but also, they want to avoid a relapse into addiction. M.J./Sandra agrees. He mentions that she'll be visiting her grandfather and to be careful to watch her mouth around him because he doesn't know about her dicey past. Mary Jo has a quick answer for that one. "Well, fine, because I don't either." Jorge pounces on her and MJ growls. Elena tries to be kind and explains they've been hiding her condition from the old guy because he's sickly and they didn't want to cause him to get worse over it.M.J. agrees to stick with the story. Jorge yells at her that she'd better. [Más te vale] Mary Jo/new Sandra jumps up from the table and races off. She's obviously had enough of the guy.
Elena jumps up then and growls back at Horrible George between clamped teeth and pursed lips. "Don't talk to her that way!" (Anyone blame Sandra for resorting to quaaludes after a few rounds with George?) Horrible Jorge insists it's necessary to keep her under control by "maintaining a strong hand"; otherwise they risk losing it all.
Across the way, Tio Abuelo Emiliano calls Nando up to invite him and Katia to the BBQ. He mentions that among other things Porferio's gotten it into his head that Fernando would make a perfect husband for Sandra. Porferio wants Fernando to meet her. Ruh-Roh! Marriage to a punked-out, barely 20-something druggie! Somebody who is 180 degrees out from his ideal staid and starchy Victoria. Does it get any better than this?

I just have to say that not only is Wm.Levy a great lover but he also was terrific acting grief stricken.

I had a laugh when it didn't take much convincing for Elena to let the maid stay with Sandra.
I think MJ aroused some matenal feelings from Elena however minuscule that is when Jorge started his tirade.
LV
Thanks you for the valiant effort to do the recap. I am so sorry you are feeling unwell. I just got over the 'flu and it was nasty. Take care of yourself, get lots of rest and lots of love.
I felt so sad for Alex upon watching today's episode. Do you think this will finally be the thing that keeps Alex from flirting? Levy is doing a nice job playing deep grief. I would not want to be Maura when Alex discovers her involvement in the plot.
How classic of Victoria to make the situation all about her.The situation is a punishment to Victoria? Huh? Isn't MJ suffering more than Vicki? And baby Tony? And Alex? Oh, well, the narcesstic lens is the only one Victoria has. Woe is me...
My apologies for the poor spelling. My fingers are not walking to the correct keys on my laptop.
The word that I intended to type was "narcissistic".
Ann-NYC
Elna June this why i really can't take Vicki most of the time everything is about her narcissistic self.
Love the round table discussion at Pedro's about mother's blind loce for their horrible and malicious children the raised.
From the previews on Monday Bruno is trying to court MJ and she is not having it she was moving away from out fear.
I hope Ferdumbo invites Alex to the BBQ.
Good grief, Alex is a wreck. How long is this gonna go on? I hope by Monday it's done because it is sad and this side of Alex is way too weak. Get a grip, hombre! He needs to go back to detective mode.
I hope MJ doesn't believe she is Bruno's wife. Ugh. Really hating this Jorge more than I hate Bruno. He's so twisted and mean.
Did you guys sense any care for MJ fron Elena? I thought I sensed just a little, but maybe it's just part of her plan to be the nice mom.
She kept Sandra, who was punked out, druggie, tattooed, disrespectful party girl who lays about Spain getting her groove on all the time*.
Then she re-discovers MJ, who is clean, polite, not tattooed, simple, not drugged out, not a party girl and a new mom devoted to home and family.
Which one would you rather have as a daughter?
*I don't think Sandra is a bad person at all. With family like Elena, Jorge and Porfiro no wonder the girl took to drugs and ran away to Spain.
One thing though, and maybe somebody at the party will pick up on this: Maria Jose does NOT have Sandra's Spanish accent. If Porfiro has heard Sandra speaking with a Spanish accent and now "Sandra" doesn't have a Spanish accent.....UH OHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Alex's angst is just not credible for me while he's wearing silk pajamas. I just couldn't muster up the sympathy... All I could think about is 'how he does he not slide right out of bed with the silk 'jammies on those satin sheets?' Seriously bad mental picture; sort of comical; very distracting.
One he should know how determine Alex is about finding the truth.
Two also how much Alex loves MJ and how much she means to him.
Three the idiot just had a hand in kidnapping a brand new mother.
Whatever plot he and Dr.Demented are cooking up together i hope it backfires on both of the.
That's why he has earn the nickname Wily E. Bruno.
Did anyone else have a deja vu moment when Vicki was trying to console Alex now as a adult.
She did the same thing to little Alex as a boy, both times as result of Bruno's hatred for him.
ITA with Pirate Babe in that Sandra's drug use became perfectly clear seeing Jorge in action. I am so looking forward to he and Bruno killing each other (a guess not a spoiler). They each need to send one another to Hades.
I think the writers may be showing Elena being somewhat human with her defending MJ/Sandra. I like Jardinera' reference to the Burning Bed. I'm still on the fence as to whether she can be redeemed.
Since we don't have many episodes left, Fer will be able to use his brain and when he sees MJ/Sandra flags and sirens should be going at full force. He saw the picture of Sandra and without a dye join and hair weave that can't be Sandra. OK that last part most men would be clueless about but during the last weeks perhaps Fer will gain a superhuman brain.
Sandra was only unfortunate to be stuck with her because she was too sick to go with Pedro, MJ and Paula.
This heifer uses her children for as long as it benefits her point blank. Poor Sandra stuck with a cold Beyatch of a mother and this horrible unfeeling step father.
I think the only love she ever got was from her her second first step father who she thought was her father and her grandfather.
Sent away to Spain probably because it was too much of a inconvenience for Elena to take care of her. We all saw how quickly when the maid offered to stay up over night to watch MJ she accepted the offer.
I hope Dr. Jorge has a syringe for her neck too.Horrible,Horrible woman.
Elena, even if she has some concern for MJ, is not worthy of forgiveness even if she was redeemed. She is cold and like everyone said, she uses her children for her own purposes.
Novelera, I am dying to have lunch with you guys, but I'm still on the fence about getting permission from the parents.
Karen, we can only hope Fernando will recognize MJ.
Doris: All I could think about is 'how he does he not slide right out of bed with the silk 'jammies on those satin sheets?'
LOL, I have to admit, putting him in normal pants, shirtless would have been better in the sense that I would find him hotter in his depression beard if he weren't wearing silk pjs. But then again, maybe it's to show how frustrated and broken up he is. maybe we're supposed to see that he doesn't care to look his best if MJ is absent.
Remember he had a thick beard and was a little disheveled on Survivor's Island with Ferdumbo and Charlie.
The only difference was he wasn't prancing around in silk PJ's and he was shirtless and either had his pants legs rolled up or cut off.
We were too distracted by this state of undress i guess to focus on his beard and facial hair.
Am I the only person here who wasn't impressed with William Levy's endless, over-the-top grief?
Also, I've never been struck by the supposed similarity in appearance between Sandra and MJ. Everyone in the telenovela sees them as identical, but they don't look all that alike to me. Oh well, too bad I'm not in the TN--I'd clear up MJ's identity very quickly! :-)
A comment on kidnapping in Mexico.
I have a friend who moved here as a teenager. Her father has ranches he leases out in Mexico. They do not feel it is safe to go and check on them as the people who live there will think they have money since they live in the US and will kidnap them for ransom. This is a fanmily of very modest means.
These episodes are sure turning into total downers. Not a positive plot line in the bunch.(I'm not counting Gabriel's art dealer-not important enough at this point). Hopefully that won't last long.
Good to see Alex pull himself out of the misery well he was drowning in. As bad as you feel for him, it seemed just slightly out of character that he wouldn't come out fighting at some point to get his woman back. Now if we can get Fer to start putting those brain waves of his to work and tell Alex want he suspects, we can see our fearless hero moving again.
So Bruno sees his opening to get MJ back, disguise himself as the boyfriend that Dr. Demento aluded to? MJ, please somewhere in your brain cells, you must remember that this guy is not the real deal. Hopefully they take a walk to the stables and the horses will go ballistic at the sight of Bruno and kick some sense into her while they're at it. And what else could our dear evil twin #1 have up his sleeve? He says he has a way to get Alex off the trail. The only way would be to give some proof of MJ being dead, kill off Sandra and call her MJ, or just have Sandra instead of MJ dropped somewhere as a return for the ransom. Viewerville knows that wouldn't work eventually...or at least it shouldn't since wasn't sandra full of tattoos if I remember right. My head hurts just trying to think like Bruno. How does he do it?
The one good thing about this episode is we were blessed with no Katia or Raquel. Sure that won't last long, but I'll enjoy it while it lasts.
I agree with the others who hope this raps up soon. don't want this part of the plot to go all the way to the end of the series. Has to be better things to come before the end.
daisynjay
Juanita - I was not impressed, either, and posted earlier about that. The silk pajamas ruined it for me and the satin sheets. Had he worn a ratty old tee shirt and pajama bottoms (or boxers (o; ) and looked more like 'real people,' I would have felt his pain.
Ale's beard grew faster in the past couple days than his beard & hair did during the four-month-long stint on the island. Que the ????
Bruno definitely has scarf issues. Last night's was awful. One can only hope he'll accidentally strangle himself with it one day soon. Bruno must die.
CielodeLevy - Happy Birthday!
Oh, to be 19 again. Oh, to be 49 again ..... (Ack!)
Let's not to forget the butchered bleached blonde hair how in the world would they pull this switch off.
Doris i am ROFL with the growth of how fast Alex's beard grew compared to his survivor island beard that should have been like Wolfman's Jacks when he was saved.
As for Bruno die by one his silly scarfs is too good for him but laughing from this image also.
Cielo:
Happy birthday to you! My birthday was today and we discovered that several of over on the Gancho board are Capricorns.
On meeting you and Novelera and any other Northern California "locals"—
I think it sounds grand. Cielo, shall I send your Mother my CV so she can have some ease about the idea of her child meeting these folks from over the internet? I don't blame her for being cautious!
I am sure we would agree to meet in a restaurant or something public. I'll see if I can think of a place central to all of us. That probably means San Francisco. Thinking...
You still managed to turn out a sparkling, well-crafted recap. Loved the "Victoria, call your office" and like Variopinta, "charreado" was a new word for me. Also thought your translation of the conversation with "candil" was clever. Somehow all those marvelous brain cells were still firing, amiga. Feel better soon.
Cielo de Levy. Happy Birthday! As a mom (though my youngest is almost 30), I would probably also nix the idea. A woman becomes a tigress from the moment she conceives. Her job is to protect her young and your mom, of course, is still in full maternal mode. Even when my mom was senile and in a nursing home in another city, she would still fret about my 31/2 hour late at night drive back to my home. As weak and confused as she was, she still worried about me and tried to protect me by having me wait until morning.
Be glad you have a loving mom and not some Elena! (That being said, of course Novelera and Elna June would be wonderful to meet. How about taking Mom along? That way she'll know what great gals they are.)
HAPPY BIrTHDAY!! Great people born these days. (My late dad's birthday was the 19th.) Hope your next year is a healthy, happy, joyous 365 days.
daisynjay
Happy Birthday to the BDay bunch.
=====================
I can better relate to boxers and a grubby beard than silk PJ's myself. Makes you wonder who's running costuming/wardrobe at times and why the actors never complain. In fact, I meant to mention the silly BoyScout tie/scarf and white shirt in opening scenes Bruno was wearing. WHO DRESSES THESE MEN?
===================
Alex's over the top grief was overdone IMHO also. Again, if the scene were done in boxers, I could hold my nose and enjoy this fruit of the loom production with a bit more enthusiasm and blind belief.
Also, if the twins weren't part of the original screenplay I say there must have been a reason.
First, I am not very impressed by William Levy's acting, though I have to admit that at last, after his meltdown, I believe he really loves MJ. Call me dense, but I have not bought the relationship between these two very beautiful people.
I am loving these episodes to see Azela Robinson as the floozy, boozy wife right out of Eugene O'Neill. She is great even as this nasty character with the dumpy yet revealing wardrobe.
And Jackie B got to show more acting chops the other night than in any moment as MJ. I like this actress and have felt like she hasn't had enough to do as MJ. At least as memory-less MJ, she gets to show a little spunk.
Finally, have so many people ever suffered from alta presion in one novela in your memory? Hernan treats all deseases, great and small, but has that blood pressure guage out on every visit to the Casa Alejandro.
Still, I'll miss this one while hoping that Carla goes back to novelas de epoca.
Happy Birthday both Cielo and EJ. Cielo, you are such a sweet daughter, I’m glad you’re with us. My son would have gone on with his plans and told me later! He’s a grown man with children of his own, so now he gets to play the worry game!!!
We talk so much about redemption here. In my way of thinking, Vicky has totally redeemed herself. She has come through on every level, at Lombardo Construction, with MJ and little Tony, steadfastness for Alex, standing up to Bruno, trying to help Raquel and on and on. Also, important for us gals, she has many times accepted responsibility for her role in the problems with the twins and anguished deeply over it. Also, kudos to Fernando, during the kidnapping, he has really been there for his friend Alex and the Lombardos, they need him. The council he gave Alex (yes, Doris those were silk PJs!) was excellent. I wish him and Vicky the best. After all, there are a lot of couples that don’t have the appearance of Hollywood chemistry but have been happy in every way for years!
I’m glad that MJ, even while drugged (?) is resisting some of the stuff that Elena and Jorge are telling her and even better, she seems to suspect Bruno in the advances. Elena and Jorge are playing good cop, bad cop whether they realize it or not, and that is a strong psychological technique I hear (Yes, cop shows!). MJ is exerting her will.....good! In speaking of Bruno, a hot pink sweater with plunging v neckline...wow. Mrs. 5ft did you see that? I know you are into fashion. For once, I wish he had worn one of his scarves.
I’m so glad Gabriel is selling his artwork. He was beaming and Paula, for the first time, seemed to respect him!! That poor household needs something positive to happen. Looks like Pedro has a head for business or at least organization, so maybe together they can stop being big MILLSTONES! There aren’t many joyful moments in this TN and that scene was one, we need to relish it.
Thanks for visiting my recap last Tue. Your praise was very warm, generous, and kind. You of course know that you are one of my mentors. Could you recognize some of your influence?
Traveling Lady, you share my admiration of Azela Robinson. I loved to hate her in Contra Viento y Marea. She always seems to give her characters a steamy, sultry, sensual frumpiness to her characters. I'm not sure I've ever seen her in a top that actually fits. In CVyM she certainly filled out a one piece (as I recall) white bathing suit in a manner that had me drooling and muttering incoherently to myself. I'm loving her antics in this and hope for her rehabilitation.
I'm really enjoying the mad doctor theme here as well. Takes me fondly back to my student days on the psychiatric service where in those days the whimsical wacky psychiatrists were prescribing EST for just about anyone presenting himself with a case of the blues.
Carlos
...."outmatched by a gifted hampster." I lurk some on Gaucho......your Monday recap was fabulous. You found a very handsome praying mantis to illustrate your point, tall, thin....green.
I think this part of the story is fascinating, not troublesome at all. Why? Because the bad guys have made so many mistakes. Think of their problems: Fernando is coming to the party, and knows MJ, and is also suspicious; Bruno is going to try to woo MJ/Sandra, which will never work; John Seagull's group is getting closer to figuring out this may have been an inside job; Elena may have second thoughts about all of this; and last but not least, what if MJ/Sandra accidentally sees the REAL Sandra, who's in a "restricted" area, but isn't she still in the same compound?
I think it'll be wild to see how everything develops. Carla Estrada's writers always throw in surprises, so I'm anticipating some doozies.
I agree with Hombre, Bruno is no going to luck out in this like he thinks.Elena is going to do what benefits her and that's keeping MJ thinking she is Sandra.
I also agree Dr.Demented, Elena and Bruno have made a lot of mistakes, lets hope that it catches up to them this week.
Carlos
Anon, I missed the avance so just watched it on youtube. Good job, MJ. That guy is not worth it.
MJ has that mole on her left breast, but due to being overlooked by the directors, the "real" Sandra also has one in exactly the same place.

Somehow I don't think Useless is dead. Jorge might have injected him with the same mind-erasing drug he injected MJ with and as his mind recovers (because you have to keep taking the drugs to keep your mind erased) he stumbles back to the ranch and foils things.
As so many have commented on it already that the writers did stressed that part when it happened.
Anon 2:47 i don't know about Useless still being alive Dr. Jorge kind of implied that he was dead.
For some reason I think Sandra will recover, be rehabilitated, and welcomed warmly into MJ and Alex's extended family, minus Bruno. Possibly the reason I think she'll recover is that Dr. D is so sure she won't. That seems like an anvil hovering over him.
I'm with Hombre, I find this part of the novela interesting. I was getting a bit bored with MJ and Alex's repetitive billing and cooing.
Maybe Levy's grief was slightly over the top. I still thought he did a pretty good job. After all, when they've gone waaay overboard showing how much he loved her, his feelings of loss would be pretty intense.
JudyB - ITA - LOL I was once told to use rye whiskey & lemon. It did not help the cold, but I didn't care. ;o)
If MJ fell for Bruno once, she could do it again, unless there are undamaged brain cells that instinctively will 'know' he's pure evil.
I can envision Azela Robinson in Tennessee Williams plays. Speaking of Tennessee Williams, I would prefer to see Alex dressed in "wife-beater" (sorry, but it is the popular description) tee shirt, channeling Stanley Kowalski, and yelling "Stella!" ... oops .... "MJ!" from his driveway.
Now that Gancho will come on at 2 p.m., I will try to watch. Might motivate me to spend more time in the sewing room. :-D
Since kidnapping is a normal happening in Mexico, grief can have so many manifestations. If he had downplayed it some of us would be criticizing him for that.
I had no problem with his performance at all.
Hombre, I like your refreshing attitude about the kidnapping plot, I guess I just needed an "attitude adjustment" on the improbable brain erasing scheme. Just need to go with the flow on this one.
Lola
I'm so ready to leave the drizzle and move into Elena and Jorge's ranch, it's just perfect for my fantasy retirement to Mexico, I would love to dig around in that garden too.
I'm also really enjoying the Elena actress, I would like to see more of her in a larger role, like the main vilaness, what fun that would be. I have a feeling Hombre and Carlos wouldn't mind watching that.
I don't think Ulises is dead, the needle thing is too ambiguous and when a villain dies in these stories we ususally get to enjoy the death right? So maybe he will come stumbling back.
I too thought I saw some brain activity being hinted at with Fernando...one can hope right?
I'm with those who think the Alex grief was a little over the top, though they had me going for a minute because I looked away when the baby dissapeared and I thought we had ourselves a stolen baby plot to go along with the kidnapping! Argh. I was very relieved to see he was in the next room.
Gabriel's art dealer was a cameo by the guy who is always going on Cristina with the celebrity gossip (farandula) I think he's the editor of People in Espanol or something.
Will Paula end up with Gabriel or with the redeemed Roberto? Hmmm, hard to say, Gabriel is from her own "clase social", he's being shown to be smart and ambitious, and it would represent her redemtion from her great flaw which is her materialism and social climbing. OTOH the relationship between her and Roberto is sweet and he's going to need someone to help him raise the Raquel+Ulises spawn.
One more thing, I agreed with those who were pointing out the narcisism annoyingness of Victoria but Sandy in TN made a good point, she has taken responsibility and redeemed herself at the same time and is she really doing the right and selfless thing to break up with Ferdumbo? If he ends up with someone else this will be shown to be better for him in the long run, but we're a little close to the end for that now unless Sandra comes back to life, is redeemed somehow and the two best friends end up with the two twin sisters. Double Wedding anyone?!! Woo Hoo! The end.
(you would think I had seen other novelas...)
¡Feliz Cumpleaños!
We need you to give daughter lessons. You parents are no doubt very proud.
We are certainly proud to have you with us here at Caray Caray.
Carlos
Great to hear from you again. I have to say, you should write for the TNs. I like your (fantasy) ending with Fernando and Sandra.
What do we do with Vicky? Do we give her to the kidnapping specialist? And Katia? And
As several of you have said, I love Porfirio's Rancho in Toluca. I remember hearing that part of MEPS was filmed in Toluca as well. Looks like a great place to live, but very expensive I would guess from seeing these properties. Jarocha, isn't Toluca close to Mexico City?
Hope you pop on over to Gancho. I am so enjoying myself there. Are you really coming to SF anytime soon? I would be so delighted to meet you and yours.
Do you think Vicky has redeemed herself? Hmmm. She has been acting very caring with Alex, MJ and Tony and Roberto. She is trying to help Raquel, who has no interest, it seems, in helping herself. I think she has expressed enormous regret at her poor parenting skills. I think I agree with you. But I still don't see her with (my boyfriend) Fernando.
Novelera: to catch up regarding our in-person meeting, please e-mail me at sdougherty3e@gmail.com
Elna June, I don't know if Vicki will end up with anyone, she probably has to end up alone per the telenovela rules because of her adultery!
JudyB I'm going to have to try Jack and coffee! Too bad it's too late in the day for the coffee, guess it will have to be Jack and something else, and I don't even have a cold!
Susalyn, I too think that Paula will end up with Gabriel. Roberto is just not into her like that.
Muchas muchas gracias, Carlos!
Randysea - that is brilliant thinking. I'll bet that's what happens, too.
Susanlynn - you may need a different antibiotic, something full-spectrum at this point.
Your last post was priceless, amiga. Loved this comment, "which leaves Roberto o o out in the cold, so I'm offering to fill in there because.... I'm a giver". Your generosity and willingness to sacrifice for the cause—well, it's just impressive. LOL.
Also loved the description of Elena's fashion sense as "Little Hacienda on the Prairie".
Also, did you notice how Meche was massaging Pedro's shoulder the other day when she poured him coffee? What was that all about? I mean, I guess it is CONVENIENT since she lives in the same house. She's a victim, he thinks he's a victim and, as the Hubster likes to say, "There is somebody for everybody".
Viki is one of my favorite characters. I look forward to seeing her in other novelas.
Raquel is one of my least favorite characters. I have alcoholics in my family and I have worked in a rehab with them. I have yet to see one as many negative traits as Raquel has (hysterical, mean and promiscuous, disrespectful etc). Oh, but I almost forgot, it's not her fault. It's all the result of Vicki's poor mothering (which we have inserted into the story).
J.
randy sea, we've been on the same thinking track this afternoon. I've been wondering who will end up with whom as well. To add to the mix is our kidnap negotiator, Sr. Seagull. He is too well dressed and coiffed to amble out of Merida ALONE, but who can fix him up with? All the gals are addicts, criminals, sick, immature, married (sort of!), etc. Can we bring back poor Erica from MEPS, she never got a beau.... I like the idea of the "twins" double wedding. Boda or not, it would be nice if Sandra awoke healed, this novela needs some good news. Cuco has been carrying the skant Sorti joy on his tiny little shoulders.
Elna June, I never cared for Gabriel either, but I'd rather Paula have him than Roberto. I know too much about Roberto besides, I don't think Paula has the maturity to be a mom to Baby Raquel. Meche and Pedro together, "say it ain't so". How many wacky courtships can one novela have?
JudyB...I drop in and out silently on Gancho. By the way, that was some heart attack!!! Thanks for your welcome post.
If the tatoos were fake they should have showed us a scene of her washing it off, and the hair also.
One of the women on ENDA had a major hair change but it was written in the story it was a wig.
If they try to make an exchange of the twins i can't see it happening.
Jarocha
That's 2 hours of Colunga 5 days a week. I'll never be the same.
As always you are a fount of information. It seems I must plan a visit to Toluca when next I am in Mexico.
Again, Happy Birthday to Cielo today! We are lucky to have your company on this Board.

On the telenovelaworld foro, people are complaining about Pura Sangre being chopped by Telefutile-a right now. Seems like something else was being chopped.
Looneyvision does it, but we usually don't know it because we're seeing stuff first-run. They chopped Pobre Millionaria last year. You couldn't NOT notice that. Stuff was barely making sense, and 'novelas last longer than 2 1/2 months.
I thought Amor Real would be complete. My DVD is pathetic. You can tell it WOULD be good, but the continuity stinks because they cut so much out of it. I think it's the one that the 2nd side is totally the making of the TN + other unnecessary things instead of more TN.
Here's the direct link to Telenovela-world. If somebody on the blog can direct you to Melinama's old recap site or you can e-mail her at the email address on the sidebar for more info.

for the Telenovelaworld forum. That might be a good place to chat about it, and all the old posts from first run would be there.
I was home today and I watched Amor Real as well. What fun! if you decide to put up a discussion or recap thread, will you let us know? I miss a lot of subtleties (because my Spanish is intermediate at best) and would welcome the input of more fluent Spanish speakers.
It would be great to have a place here where we could ask questions.
I watched today also, that man just wipes me out.
Carlos said he was a TV addict, well I guess I know how that happened. I've only watched the 9PM TN, but now it's also 4-6PM
This novela is doing very poor in ratings in Mexico right now, i wonder if it does the same over here will it get pulled from it's timeslot?
The reason the move was made was to generate and build up a strong audience for Hasta and then bring in CS and hope some of the audience will stay and watch CS.
What happens if Hasta is not well like and it bombs over here, but lets just say it does do well anyway. If fans of the original CS don't like the newer version or just plain can't watch it because it is awful.
What does Univision do then, i believe this was a very wrong move made by Univision and may comeback to bite them on the butt.
Posting really late because I just got back from the West Coast. Caught the shortened version of the Friday episode on YouTube, so very grateful for the thourough recap Jardinera. Count me as one of the saps that was completely taken in by Alex's grief. And when little Tony reached up his tiny little hands to catch Alex's tears...awww, so sad. Lol! I know. But I cry during sappy comercials too. :)
Now, to wach the chopped up version of today's episode on YouTube in order to be able to comment tomorrow.
Happy birthday Cielo! I will send you the info about Haiti from my work account.

Fernando's body sure is responding, to the theraPIST.
Vicky s/b be ashamed to abandon Fernando now. I'm sure he thinks it's because he will be a burden.
Anyone see Dr Obregon (MEPS) in the fiber one commercial? Love that guy, I hope to see him in sth soon.
I remember it being said that Elena was teaching MJ to drive, but don't recall the scene.
