Sortilegio Monday January 25

Recap from previous episode: Last Friday, of course, Alex and MaríaJose come face to face again. Alex seems almost overcome by emotion whereas MJ looks struck by him and maybe a little puzzled at what she’s feeling, but not nearly as moved. I saw that Jardinera wasn’t able to report all of the scenes, so I’ll add one here that caught my eye: Bruno is talking to Elena about whether or not MaríaJose should be out and about, potentially running into people she knows and re-gaining her memory. As they walk across the portico and into the kitchen Elena reassures Bruno that in fact MJ is remembering less and less each day. They discuss his return to Mérida for the board meeting and Elena shows that she’s got no self-preservation instinct AT ALL by turning her back to Bruno to work at the sink, He snip snips the air with a pair of kitchen shears while looking at her back.

And on to the show…Bruno and Elena are waiting for MaríaJose to return, and wondering why Maura called. Bruno asks if she’s calling to let them know that Alex is getting suspicious but it’s apparently nothing to be concerned about – Maura didn't sound worried – and Bruno will call her when he gets to Mérida. Bruno is wearing such tight pants he has difficulty bending at the waist to stand up when MJ arrives and does an odd little hop to get himself upright. Once he is vertical it looks like his slacks are about 85% spandex and they don’t hide a thing. Either his topography is astounding or he has enhanced the natural features of the terrain.

MaríaJose/Sandra is returning from her little saunter in the woods to escort Éster/Paula back. Bruno asks her to see him to his car to say goodbye and explains he has to go to Mérida for his family business. He suggests she keep trying to arrange a meeting between her grandfather and him while he’s gone. As they walk to the car they each confide that they’ll miss the other. MaríaJose/S tells Bruno/D it’s because he’s the only who takes her out from time to time. Bruno/Damien wants to know if it couldn’t be because she’s starting to love him a little, but she tells him love doesn’t grow that quickly. Bruno reminds her that they once loved each other but MJ/S is sticking to her guns and says that she doesn’t remember it, and if she doesn’t it’s like it never happened. She allows Bruno/D to kiss her goodbye though she’s clearly uncomfortable with it. She holds her arms down at her sides and bends stiffly at the waste so that their heads come together, but doesn’t respond. You’d think a lady’s man like Bruno would get that she’s barely tolerating him and that that his carefully laid plans are going awry (ick, ick, ick,– she’s obviously so uncomfortable around him, and he is so oily and insistent) but he just seems smug.

From the belltower Alex sees Bruno kissing MJ and damns him (maldito seas Bruno). He grimaces and breathes heavily and leaves the bell tower.

Back at Mengele Manor, Elena interrogates MJ/S about why she was away so long. MJ/S explains about Éster and her asthma and Elena tells her she should stay away from people she doesn’t know who could be a bad influence on her and lead her back into her addictive ways. MJ/S insists that she has no desire for drugs and that Éster seemed really nice, but Elena angrily tells her that people are NEVER what they seem (MJ, please listen to this major psychological insight on your mother’ part!), that she could revert to her old ways at any time, and that if she’s better now it’s all thanks to Jorge. The woman’s cynicism knows no bounds and it’s actually hard to watch her manipulate her own daughter this way. Elena seems like she’s getting panicky and is afraid of losing control of the situation; her voice is rising and she gets angry as she tries to convince a skeptical MJ/S of the danger she’s in if she doesn’t trust her family (i.e., her and Jorge). MJ shoots back that the two of them are more like her jailers than her family. I like this new version of MaríaJose, who is far more sure of herself even though she’s lost her memory and thinks she’s an ex drug-addicted tramp who was rescued by a loving mother.

Don Pedro explains to Chucho that he wants to go to Mexico City to see his daughter, Sandra while she’s still alive. But who will take care of the business? ¡Super-Chucho!

In the casa Lombardo Vicky is once again confronted by the general disaster that is 2/3 of her offspring when Roberto tells her that Raquel is going to take the baby away with her and won’t take care of little Vicky at all. Big Vicky insists that Roberto find Ulises so that he can get legal custody of the baby, but in the meantime she will make sure that the baby doesn’t leave the house. She leaves Roberto to his dire thoughts and goes to greet Fernando, who tells her he can find no record of Bruno’s supposed business, “Hidalgo Development.” Fernando calls his tío Emiliano to ask him to see if he can dig up any information on the company, and Emiliano is delighted to help out. He asks after Katia, chuckles at her escapades behavior– aah the youth of today - and sends her a big hug. Fernando explains to Vicki that he’s still having problems with her, and that they had an argument; she is unable to forget Bruno.

Katia is moaning to a sad, lonely and bald Lisette (yes, that’s Katia complaining to Lisette) about Bruno’s poor treatment of her. Lisette tells her she’s obsessed and Katia, ever gracious, tells her she doesn’t even know what love is because she’s never managed to hook anyone. Lisette tries to inspire some little portion of compassion by telling Katia that no one ever comes to visit her, but Katia assures her that her woes are nothing compared to HER problems. Why, Lisette can’t know what it’s like to have her boyfriend leave her. Lisette sadly agrees that she really can’t, and it’s clear that the only reason she tolerates Katia is because NO ONE else comes to see her. She’s alone and maybe dying, and the result of her life is one snotty friend who tells her she’s got it good compared to her losing her boyfriend. Ouch.

Victoria and Raquel are in Raquel’s love-nest-turned-drinking-den. Vicki insists that Raquel will have to come to the Lombardo house to see her daughter, because she, Vicki, is willing to declare Raquel an unfit (alcoholic) mother in court if she tries to take the baby with her. Raquel insists that the baby is hers and she can do what she wants with her, and that if her mother takes her to court it will only drag her, Vicki, down, also. Vicki rightly points out that all the dirt about her has already been spilled – what more could they say about her? Raquel angrily slaps a cup of coffee out of Meche’s hands when she realizes she’s lost the battle, but she doesn’t protest when Victoria tells Meche they won’t need her anymore because Raquel is moving back into the nuthouse.

Meche is explaining to Gabriel and Chucho why she is so bummed about losing her job: Now she’ll have to go to the Lombardo house to pick up her pay, and she’s afraid she’ll run into Bruno. Chucho is sick and tired of Bruno and his tricks, and offers to go with her - if Bruno tries anything he will attack him with his trusty machete. There is a moment when it seems like Chucho is attempting to look cold and mean but he’s too dang cute to take seriously. What we do get, though, is that Bruno is making so many enemies that people will line up three deep to kill him. Maybe his death will be homicide by multiple assailants?

Bruno arrives at the Casa Lombardo and displays his normal surly manners, shouting at Vicki and insulting Ezequiel (¡mueve tu esqueleto!) Add another one to the list of people who would have a motive for killing Bruno. (That’s Ezequiel, of course. Vicky hasn’t progressed far enough in her own personal development to want to kill her evil spawn.)

Vicki is on the phone telling Alex she’s managed to get Bruno to stay in Mérida another day. Alex and Paula review their plan to get close to MariaJose/Sandra.

Paula/E goes to Mengele Manor to find MJ/S and runs into Elena exercising her horse. Elena has no inkling of who Paula/Éster really is but she invites her in to chat because, she says, she likes to meet her daughter’s friends. She’s doing everything possible to appear warm and welcoming, but Paula/É is having none of it. Elena puts a “friendly” hand on her shoulder and Paula/É jerks away as if she trying to shake off a bug that is crawling up her neck. Later, in the house, Elena asks her about her parents:
Paula: My mother hasn’t been with us for years
Elena: Oh – so she died.
Paula: yes, she’s dead…I practically can't remember her...it’s better this way.

Poor Paula is so bitter and full of hate towards the mother who left her – I really feel for her at this moment. She explains that their mother left them when she was young, and her father was everything to them – he loved them, he took care of them, and for that reason she doesn’t even miss her mother. Elena, who is always having a problem keeping up anyway, seems a little puzzled by the turn in the conversation but keeps her game face on and asks about Paula/É’s brother, who, it turns out, is a professional photographer.

MJ/S returns and she and Paula/É greet each other with cries of happiness. Paula assures MJS her asthma is better and, with a look of disgust, says that she inherited her asthma from her weakling mother, a real “debilucha.” The girls decide to go out for a walk over Elena’s futile objections and admonition not to be gone long.

Paula/É proposes that they go back to her house and MJ protests that they might be interrupting, which Paula rightly interprets as “maybe your brother is with his girlfriend and we shouldn’t interrupt.” She assures MJ/S that her brother is a sought-after bachelor but isn’t going out with anyone, and off they go.

Alex/Nicolas is at the front of the house, looking, waiting, hoping to see MJ/S. When she and Paula/É arrive he seems stunned by his good luck at having her appear in his yard, and Paula invites her in for a drink. He’s so eager to have her with his he can barely talk, but when she protests that maybe he has something else to do he manages to stutter out no, no, no, no, no no – no tengo nada que hacer, no. They walk into the house and within 2-3 sentences he manages to work into the conversation a question about whether or not she has a boyfriend, which she quickly assures him she does not. He can’t stop looking at her and she seems very taken with him – much more so than she did when they met when she was in her right mind and had all her faculties intact. Hmm, why do we have to receive a blow to the head, like Alex after his accident, or a syringe to the neck like MJ/S, to recognize true love when it comes calling?

Later the three of them are talking around the table and it comes out that “Nicolas” has to do all the cooking because “Éster” is such a bad cook. MJ/S is surprised and “Éster” begins to give a rundown of all her brother’s qualities: he’s a first-class cook, a good dancer, athletic, knows how to paint…MJS is seriously impressed, and Alejandro/N is looking stunned at the lies that are piling up. He tries to say his sister is exaggerating but Paula/É insists that not only is it all true, he’s ALSO a professional photographer and would be happy to show MJ/S how to take pictures.

Back at Mengele Manor Jorge is telling Elena not to worry about MJ/S’s outings, that they are good for her. Elena worries that she will meet someone who will distract her from Bruno but Jorge is ten steps ahead of her and sees how they can manipulate her easily with her affection for them and her grandfather. They’ll get her to marry Bruno on the pretext that it’s what the grandfather wants before he dies, and they’ll tell her it’s only temporary. Elena wonders if Bruno will agree to the divorce and Jorge tells her of course he won’t. (Is Elena kind of dumb, or just not evil enough to keep up with Jorge?) Once the old man dies Bruno will refuse to divorce (just say no), and they will all win. Well, except for MJ of course, but Bruno will have MJ and Jorge will have his clinic, so everyone who’s anyone will win.

MJ/S leaves and poor Alex looks so sad to see her go that I feel for him. Alex reproaches Paula for building him up so much: yes, he has a date with MJ/S, but now he has to drive to Toluca, buy a camera, and then figure out how to use it so that he can teach MJ/S photography. Fernando calls and confirms that he’s heard back from his uncle and there’s no such company as “Hidalgo Development,” which proves that Bruno must be in on the kidnapping. Fernando points out that they can’t forget Maura in all of this, and Alex says he’s thought of that, and of the fact that Maura was the one who brought MJ to the house where she was kidnapped. Alex, 30 seconds ago I felt so sad for you because of how much you are suffering, but now I hope to see you suffer much more for your selfishness with Maura. Suffer, suffer, suffer! Think of all you’ve put MJ through just so that you could get the ego strokes of having Maura dandling around you.

Bruno is in the White Palace with Maura and she’s complaining about how worried she is that the person dropped in front of the Lombardo house is really MJ, who will wake up and then their geese will be cooked. Bruno tells her to relax – the most logical thing is for it to be Sandra, since she was the one in the coma, and there’s no way she’ll come out of it. Maura isn’t so sure, but Bruno insists that at any rate he will soon be marrying MJ/S. No, he says, she’s not in love with him, but she is under a lot of pressure from her family and her grandfather. Hmm, this must be why he doesn’t care that MJS gets slightly queasy whenever he touches her – he’ll get her to marry him by any means necessary, and if it’s by emotional coercion then so be it.

With Fernanda’s help Vicky pretends to be having an attack of headache/high blood pressure which will keep her in bed for at least a day or two. Alas, she tells Bruno, the board meeting will have to be postponed again. Bruno tries to rage but a lot of hissing from Fernanda about his mother’s condition keeps him quiet. He agrees to wait one more day, and then he’s out of there. Vicky calculates that will give Alex two more days (I guess she’s calculating a travel day?) to get close to MJ/S.

MJ is looking out the window, seemingly waiting or searching for something (Alejandro, wherefore art thou Alejandro) when Elena asks her what she’s doing. She tells her mother about her outing with Paula and gets a little pink-cheeked when she talks about meeting "Ester’s” brother, “Nicolas,” and insists that Damian is not her boyfriend. Elena recognizes the clinker that’s about to be thrown into their plans and tries to scare MJ/S into staying with BrunoD by saying that no one else would have her if they knew about her disreputable past as a slutty drug addict. MJ/S breaks down in tears and tells her to stop throwing the past in her face, but Elena insists she’s only telling her these things for her own good – she needs someone who knows her past and can take care of her, and that person is Damian. I’m again creeped out by this sociopathic mother manipulating her daughter like this. MJ/S clearly doesn’t like the thought of having to accept Damian for her own good and collapses onto Elena’s bosoms, which are modestly covered today. It’s obvious Elena has had no experience comforting or loving a child and doesn’t quite know what to do or where to put her hands to comfort MJS. She pats her akwardly a few times and tries to murmur words of comfort, although they come out sounding more like a hiss.

Fernando comes to Vicky with the news that Bruno is lying about his company. They don’t know if he’s involved with the kidnapping, he lies, but they do know that he’s trying to get MJ to fall in love with him. Vicky is “ill with sadness.” Ok, fine, ill with sadness - but will she react, or will she just continue to wave her hands about futilely and protest Bruno’s innocence.

Pedro goes to see S/MJ in the hospital. He cries, of course, but for once it’s understandable and relevant and I don’t grit my teeth so much. He talks to Sandra and tells her he’s her father, and that no other could ever have missed her more than he did when she was taken away, and that none of this would ever have happened if she had grown up by his side. One small twist of fate – she’s sick one day and can’t go to church with them – and her life is destroyed (that last is my commentary, not his.) He begs her to wake up and return to him, to be with MJ and Paula.

MJ/S is standing in front of the house waiting and watching for Paula/É and Alejandro/N to pick her up. Elena forbids her to go but MJ/S rebels and insists that she is going out no matter what. At that moment “Nicolas” and “Ester” arrive, and “Nicolas” introduces himself to Elena. As they’re leaving he tells Elena to have a good day, though his expression seems to say “I’m here and I’m going to fight you on this. Please start something right now so I can take you on.”

They arrive in front of what looks like a combination stained glass museum and arboretum, and Paula tells the two of them to go ahead, that she will catch up with them (ahorita los alcance). MJ is walking backwards to face Alejandro/Nicolas as they flirt when she trips and twists her ankle. He offers to help her to a bench to sit down and picks her up in his arms to carry her. She is giggling at his unexpected gallantry when she has a flashback to the night he carried her up the stairs after their first date (the one where she wore the gorgeous blue dress and they exchanged hot kisses in his car). She is seriously impactada at the memory.

Scenes from next show:

Porfirio is in bed insisting he wants MJ/S to marry Fernando, but if she doesn’t nothing will happen – she simply won’t get the inheritance. Hernán is talking Alex out of sneaking into the Mengele compound, and Maura is telling a deathly ill Lisette how relieved she’ll be if (when?) S/MJ (who of course she thinks is MJ/S) finally dies.

FANTASTIC recap Chavela!! Many, many thanks. So agree with your description of Paula and Elena's meeting. The bitterness of Paula is sooooo on target. I loved her description of her mom as "debilucha"!!!

Puppydog look Alex at his 2nd meeting with "Sandra" --swoon worthy!!
CubsFan

Chavala thanks so much for the recap.

I enjoyed Paula strong contempt she had for Elena, Elena unaware she was meeting her third daughter was wondering why little miss Ester seemed so cold.

ITA i have a hard time watching how she manipulates MJ to do what she and Dr,Demented and Bruno want.

Glad that Ferndumbo told Alex that Maura may have been in on the kidnapping too.

Bruno is so smug and over confident that he's going to marry MJ under her current condition. I cannot wait for when his plans are foiled.

Loved when Nic/Alex picked up MJ last night her memory flashed back to when he carried her up the stairway of death.

Avances for tonight Porfirio insisting to Dr.Demented that MJ has to marry Ferdumbo or no inheritance.Priceless.

Alex telling MJ in their old bedroom in Merida at casa Lombardo to remember and do it for their son.

Thanks for the great recap Chavala. ITA with you regarding Papa Pedro's crying; for once, it was appropriate and your commentary was spot on as well. Now if Vicky will stop lamenting her demon spawn and reign them in!

When Alex was talking with Fernando about Bruno and Maura, I think he called them both hyenas (someone please let me know if I was off). So Maura's days as Alex's friend are over. And she keeps digging her own grave wishing death on S/MJ.

Paula is the best wingman (woman) ever! If you ever need someone to play up (or lie about) your attributes to help snag the affections of the one you desire, Paula’s your girl. Lol! The look on Alex’s face as she extolled his virtues! Now he knows how MJ felt all those times Paula would jump in and embellish the truth for her. She’s an unstoppable force.

Also loved that scene of her and Elena, just seething with hate and anger. I actually hope that meeting Elena and seeing the choices she made out of greed will help Paula see where her own greedy and selfish tendencies might lead (and where the probably came from). I hope it makes her a better person. Fighting to get her beloved sister back I think has already started the process of making her a better person.

MJ and Alex- So cute as they made googly eyes at each other. Ahh, love!

Thanks, Chavala, for a very complete and fun recap, with lots of vocab.

I wasn't too happy about Raquel moving back into the house.

I do think there are at least two days before Bruno can leave Merida, in that the board meeting was supposed to be the "day after tomorrow", and Vicky's illness may have moved it back another day.

Katia really is selfish. She's in for a rude awakening.

If only MJ would stop taking the pills. I also think it's ridiculous for Elena to say that SMJ should never tell anyone about her past as a drug addict, and only Bruno, who "knows" her past, would have her. If I were MJ's age, and were introduced to her, and she was sweet and beautiful, would I break up with her if she told me she used to be a drug addict? Of course not.

Chavala, wonderful recap with just the right mix of info and snark......very good job, thanks!

Wrong again! I take back everything I said about Paula going with Alex on the MJ mission, she's wonderful. You know, she is the perfect one to gain entry into the Mengala Mansion without suspicion. The asthma attack was priceless and the "Nicholas as photographer" scene around the kitchen table was adorable. I was a little worried that she was giving too much info to Elena about her "mother", Mrs. Mengale might suspect something, but no worries there.

Wouldn't MJ's memory come barreling back if she stops taking the meds? That has been the implication. Hey girls, given my forgotten hubby is Alex and I have little Tony, I'd just pretend to get my memory back and fast...what about ya'll?

Vivi ITA the look on Alex face when Paula was going on and on about him was priceless, it was like saying can you chill out now i'm going to have do all that to show her you're not a liar.

I could just feel the hate Paula had for Elena coming in waves through my TV and when she moved her shoulder from Elena's touch.

I thought Elena was picking up a vibe from Paula but she was not sure what to make of it.

As i watch each and everyone of the villains basking in the after glow of their brilliant scheme to separate Alex and MJ forever.

It's going to be so much enjoyable for all to realize the only ones they were fooling were them selves.

Katia can someone give her some mind altering drugs please, poor Lissette i know she is scared and worried about dying and wants any type of company.

If i saw Katia coming in my room i would get the nurse and have shown out.

Chavela, that was amazing! Great writing and hilarious. :)
rotfl at the description of Bruno's pants!

I also loved Paula and pitied her, lots of que the heck to Katia and pity for Lissete, and LOVED Alex and MJ together. I just wanted to rub it in Bruno's face that once again MJ is picking Alex over him.

Ok, loads of hw already. Be back later. :)

LOL, ok i was leaving but had to come back for you, Sandy. Heck yes I would pretend I remembered if I found was married to the hottest guy I'd ever seen who is also nice, sweet, rich and with a beautiful baby! Forget Damian, who is cute in looks but sends nothing but creepy vibes. Alex, you'd b lucky if the Caray girls were in MJ's position.

Jarocha i wanted to respond to what you wrote yesterday but since the time schedule of the novelas i don't comment that much during the 7:00 to 10:00 hours anymore.

Why in the world would Mejia combine some of Yo Compro esa Mujer with Corazon Salvage even if for the first five episodes.

I saw Yo Compro Esa Mujer with a young and age appropriate Eduardo Yanez in it with Leticia Calderon as his co star it is a good litlle novela but i wouldn't say it's a classic.

It's a period piece for those who like dramas like that with the costumes of tight horse riding pants and the ladies dressing like Scarlett O'hara.

I don't understand what is wrong with this producer and i shudder to think what he's going to do Cuna de Lobos.

Imagine if they started the first forty minutes of the Great Escape with Hogan's Heroes.

Cielo de Levy ITA with Sandy heck yes i would pretend too oh you're my husband ok let's go.

As Bruno for pants, Chavala i was distracted by it also i was asking is it too tight or does it look like he's wearing diapers under it or something.

Somehow i don't think it was the look wardrobe was going for with him wearing it.

Just like the other day when Roberto was talking to Paula about Raqhell giving him a hard time about not giving him custody for lil' Vicki.

His pants were too tight also but it didn't seem like his underwear was riding up on to make it look like he was wearing diapers.

I also want to send a shout out to Stephe where are you woman you have been greatly missed with your comments. I know someone mentioned at the end of last year the mother was very sick.

I hope her health has improved and if you can find the time pop in to let us know you're ok and your thoughts on Sorti since it's ending soon.

Also another shout out to Incog you were with us from the beginning but i believe you said you wouldn't stay for the long haul because you weren't feeling this novela.

I would like to hear that everything is also fine with you and wishing you and Stephe a Happy New Year.

Chavela, this was absolutely stellar. Your recap was informative, fun and fresh. Loved your details.

I may be in the minority but I've always liked Paula. While her shunning of Elena was masterfully done, in other aspects, she's definitely maturing. Last night proved that when all is said and done, she loves and is loyal to her sister.

My heart goes out to Sandra and Lisette. Lisette was selfish and a "mean girl" but certainly deserves a better fate. As you noted Anon, she IS frightened and could use some compassionate, caring company. As others have noted on previous posts, I'm hoping that the 3 sisters reunite and that MJ and Paula get to know their other "femsib".

Agree with you CubsFan, I'm also loving Levy. His performance is well nuanced and he conveys a vulnerability and softness that is so appealing.

Hombre, I'm not happy that Raq is moving back in the house either. She's completely crazed at this point.

Diana

Karen, you are right about the hyena remark. I think he said something along the lines of it being sad that they are surrounded by hyenas. He doesn't receive any new information about Maura, though, so I wonder why he suddenly feels that she's a hyena. Is it because he is suffering so much with begin close to MJ and not having her recognize him?

Viki, I agree that this could be the beginning of growing up for Paula...and Vicki, Alex, Robert, Elena...anyone who manages to survive the storm. It will be interesting to see who is deemed worthy of survival and escapes the anvil, who isn't, and who is simply a victim of random bad luck.

Speaking of Corazon Salvaje, has anyone else noticed the similarities between Sortilegio and the 1993 CS? I think the writer was the same, and every once in a while I notice the same lines and situations coming up, like the rivalry between the half brothers, certain expressions that really caught my attention in CS because I'd never heard them before, etc.

Wow. This was a fantastic recap, Chavala, full of good insight and funny remarks as well. Hope my recording worked last night 'cause I'm dying to see this, now that I've read the summary.

Loved the recap Chavela. Paula could barely conceal her contempt for her mommy dearest. Elena didn't even know she was speaking to her unknown third daughter. I can't wait to see the look on her face when that is revealed. Alex sure did give Elena a "bring it on" look. I wonder how long is he going to try to woo MJ back before just taking her away from that awful place. It seems being around Alex is jarring MJ's memory. The mind may forget, but the heart remembers. Bruno is so full of it. He doesn't realize that his great plan is bust. And if he thinks he's going to force MJ to marry him, he's got another thought. I felt bad for Lisette fighting for her life with Katia yammering on about her Bruno problems as though they are worse. What an insensitive person.

Ale's smile is sooo disarming... ay caramba! I too would pretend to remember being married to him.

Chavala - Great recap, great snark & editorial commentary. Thank you!
My favorite recap line: "homicide by multiple assailants." That one is a keeper.

"Either his topography is astounding or he has enhanced the natural features of the terrain." That WAS rather distracting, wasn't it? Too much information of the visual kind. I do not want to know which direction a man 'dresses' and that could not be avoided. Ack.
No panty lines because he either
1) was wearing a thong (ack... another awful visual), or
2) was going commando.

I like the new SMJ. I really think Jacqueline Bracamontes is doing a great job of acting in this 'novela.

Bruno must die. I can't wait to see who and/or how. If he lives, I'll probably throw something at my TV.

Fantastic recap Chavala. I felt for Lissete when she had to listen to Katia complain about Bruno. I always had a soft spot for her.

Paula was great when meeting Elena. I do agree with those that feel that she can be annoying at times but I still think she is a very likeable character.

I wonder if Maura would truly feel relieved as she thinks if S/MJ died, for all her evil schemings I don't think she is as heartless as she believes herself to be.

Anon: Mejía chose to combine YCEM and CS to make it different to the public because CS93 has been seen too many times so that change would make it different. There are more things from YCEM after the first 5 episodes, but those first 5 are completely YCEM.

Chavala: I think Maria Zarattini definitely has a type of characteres and stories she likes to write. Her galans are always strong, smart and sometimes they have shows of anger and/or jelousy (Juan, Manuel, Alejandro, etc.). Her heroines are always sweet and nice and delicate, but ready to do whatever is necessary once they meet their galán (Mónica, MJ, Matilde, Hipólita, etc.). She always highlights the differences between clases and usually the higher clases are full of villains.

In this case the characters of Alejandro and Bruno remind me more of the characteres of Alejandro and Flavio from "La Jaula de Oro" also written by Zaratini. Flavio was almost a psycopath like Bruno and the two Alejandros are pretty simmilar. In that story Alejandro was married to Carolina(wordly, strong, a little cynical) who died almost at the begining, and he founds the existance of her twin sister Oriana (delicate, sweet, innocent) who still lives with her rich family. Carolina was taken by her mother when she was a young child and Oriana stayed with her family and with the interest of her grandma she married evil Flavio who loved her (or was obseseed with her) but had a horrible temperament. At the beginning Alex is just trying to find out who killed Carolina (It was Flavio, to make sure Oriana was the sole heir of the family) but he ends up inlove with Oriana. Carolina/Oriana was played by Edith González and Alejandro was Saúl Lizaso.

Jarocha

Vicky, Vicky, Vicky...You have to stay in your bedroom all day and play "sick", and a buff young stud, who is totally hot for you, comes waltzing into your bedroom. What do you do?

a) Rip off your granny glasses, flowered bathrobe, and fuzzy slippers, lock the door and lead him to the bed.
b) Look at him sadly and blab on and on about your evil children.

WRONG choice Vicky!

Thanks, Chavala, for a first-class recap. this one was a real winner. There were many places in the recap where I noted, I agree, uh-huh, yes.

I love the actress portraying Elena. She is completely creep-worthy. The scene where she tries to figure out how to comfort MJ and just draws a blank look was priceless. Safely in TN land, as I know myself to be, I could see that her kind of maladaptive behavior is not sustainable and that soon our heroine will come back into the bosom of her lovingly dysfunctional family. Thanks goodness. MJ's perils of Pauline are starting to wear on my nerves.

Of course, I also understood Paula's poisonous bitterness toward her mother. I was afraid for a moment that Paula would overplay her hand and give Elena an overt clue as to who she was, but he pulled back just in time. Whew.

But aren't you surprised at how trusting is our Jorrible Jorge? He keeps underestimating Bruno, while Bruno keeps underestimating him. Hmmm, maybe these two will off one another.

Elna June- It's more that they both keep over estimating their own abilities. Jorge doesn't really see MJ making acquaintances as a threat because he is so certain he has erased all traces of her former life from her memory. And Bruno is so sure that he will make MJ his, one way or another.

Jarocha did Zaratinni write CS of 1993 i don't think she had anything to do with the latest version being produced by Mejia.

Why aren't the higher ups at Televisa not recognizing they gave Mejia too much power and put a stop to his madness.

From the people that you have discussed CS 2009 with how do they feel about him combining the two novelas together.

Is that the reason for the poor ratings for it, or just one of many things wrong with the new version of CS.

Amigos, I just love to hate Bruno. I have to say how much I appreciate Zepeda's acting skills. He has created a groups of mannerisms that her employs (including the clucking, hissing and finger snapping) that make him completely distinctive from other villains. He is styled so uniquely (the scarves, tight short trousers, purple shirts) that you can spot Bruno the minute he comes into a scene or is lurking on the edge of the set. He plays arrogant so well, especially in his treatment of the servants and lower class characters on the show. Of course we hate Bruno, but I am a big fan of Zepeda. It would be so fun to see what he could do with a galan part.

Jarocha, if you on in today, can you tell us how David Zepeda is perceived in Mexico? He is so skilled in taking a villain just to the edge of absurdity but not quite over the top.

Hat's off to you. Sr Zepeda. If you pop into my neighborhood I would like to buy you a drink.

Right-o, Vivi.

Narcissism strikes again! Each of the characters (Bruno and Jorge) has such profound belief in his own abilities that he cannot imagine failing. That is particularly annoying with Bruno, as we in TN land can see that each of his lame plots has failed again and again.

Nice call!

Anon: Yes, Zaratini adapted CS93. Zaratini was originally José Rendón's head writer, they were part of a team with Ernesto Alonso in a few novelas. Alonso was the producer, Rendón the director and Zaratini the writer.

Together those three worked in several novelas that today are considered classics. Two of those were, "Tú o Nadie" (an original by Zaratini), and the big hit "Bodas de Odio" (an adaptation of a story by Caridad Bravo Adams, the same writer of Corazón Salvaje) . Those have now been remade by Carla Estrada with a new adaptation of Zaratini: "Sortilegio" and "Amor Reál".

Then Rendón moved away from Enrique Alonso and decided to produce by himself, he asked Zaratini to work with him and together they did some novelas, his third production was "Corazón Salvaje" from 1993.

I don't think people are as upset about the combining of YCEM and CS as they claim to be. I also don't think that's the reason for the flop of the novela, because it had high ratings during the first five episodes (I think even higher than Sortilegio). The ratings started to drop once the characteres appeared as adults.

Elna June: I think Zepeda is well liked and known, but not as famous yet. Sortilegio had okay ratings but it was not a huge hit so people know him but they are not crazy about him yet. He has been, noticed by producers though, and he has been cast in "La Dueña de Tu Amor" so maybe that one will help him become more famous.

Chavala, that was a great recap. Thanks so much. We went to a concert and I only saw the last 10 min. of the episode and really appreciated your recap.

Also, thanks for the recaps from the end of last week. I'm still suffering from limited I'net access and can't comment every day.

I wondering if Jorrible Jorge could be a cousin of Fernando Escadon's, as in "nobody's smarter that I am." He and Bruno could kill each other in anger/vengeance and I wouldn't complain.

I've enjoyed the last few days of Alex in the cowboy wardrobe, EXCEPT for last night's look with the short sleeves and t-shirt rolled over the sleeves. Too costume-y or drugstore cowboy or something. Now the authentic cowboy look? You can ride my range anytime, honey. And park your boots in my house.

The carefree, happy MJ is refreshing. Loved the analysis of MJ as the downtrodden savior of her sorry papi and dependent family. Also think Paula is doing well as Alex' sidekick.
La Paloma

In MEPs didn't the mom tell the daughter (the star of the novela) that no one would want her because of her being raped and that she should stay with fernando S? Just like elena telling MJ no one would want her. If your esteem is low, you believe it.

Chavala, thank you thank you for your great recap. I have got to get my sons to stop calling me from college during the 9:00 hour. I love them, but mom needs her TN fix too!
What was it with people and poor Lisette last night. Honestly, all anyone wanted to do was rag about their problems to the poor girl. What did they think, Oh, captive audience! and go at it. even her own sister. She should have told them all to take a hike and grow up.
I am really starting to take to Paula in this more mature role. she always was no-nonsense and free, but she is supposed to have gotten older and smarter and the actress is putting that into her characterization. Loved her attitude toward elena. No starry-eyed look that she meeting her real mother - it's as if she could sense her evilness and had no positive emotion to that woman at all. She deserves none that's for sure.
Bruno - besides the fact I was talking to my son during Bruno's almost wardrobe malfunction, I would have missed the dialogue anyway being totally distracted on what the heck was happening there with those pants. Tight is one thing, but gees.........
Alex is already getting under MJ's skin, thank goodness, and memories coming back. Maybe not so good is Dr. Frankenstein and Mommy begin to suspect.
hate the thought this is ending soon since we don't have anything too great following. Bummer

Jarocha thanks once again for your well informed info. I have to ask why didn't Mejia remake over Yo Compro Esa Mujer and just left CS alone.

How exactly is he going to produce Cuna de Lobos and only show it once a week? Is he planning on condensing that novela because it's 170 episodes long.

Also i read he was going to try to hire a cast of mostly young actors who are age appropriate for their roles.

I loved Tu O' Nadie when Sorti comes to a end i'll give a comparasion between the two works.

Thanks for the recap Chavala. I missed the end so that filled it in for me. Did anyone notice that Bruno matched the decor in Maura's pink palace? It really cracked me up. I feel kind of sorry for Lisette. Everyone around her is whining and yet she's the one in the hospital with a bald head and cancer.

Speaking of Bruno's, erm, topography, I believe that the s-t-r-e-t-c-h in his now-infamous grey trousers may have enhanced the lay of the land.

I have some experience of this. The hubster is a serious (amateur) bicyclist. Some 20 years ago, when he first took up bicycling, I offered to host a lunch for his bicycle club. You can imagine my surprise when the fellas all came to lunch still attired in their supertight bicycling shorts. The bumps and undulations were so fascinating that I felt a bit like a nun at a Tantra workshop—I simply did not know where to put my eyes. Eventually, I became used to bicycle shorts on men, and I suppose if codpieces or tight gray trousers (worn commando) became all the rage in my neighborhood I would eventually get used to those as well. For now, though, they are still a real eye popper.

Funny how many things one learns on this blog. I now know what "going commando" means. This was not in my vocabulary before!

Anon 12:51...Yes, El Fin should be delicious. There are so many really bad characters in this novela, we'll loooooove seeing everyone get their just desserts....May I add some of my high school "friends" to the mix.... No, never mind, I've been carried away by thoughts of revenge!!!!

I too have worried about Incog and Steph...girls, if you're here, send us a signal. We miss you and we are a little worried!!

Sandy i give my thoughts on this version and the Tu O' Nadie version when we get to the end of it.

Novelera where have you've been that you never heard going commando before?

CS 1993 version how long was that novela because they say this new version will be 200 episodes.

I think someone mentioned before that Zaratinni does not like doing long novelas like Carla Estrada.

Sortilegio is preempted Wednesday in my time zone. Is it preempted everywhere?

I first heard the term "going commando" on that friends episode where Joey puts on all of Chandler's clothes and he tells poor Chandler that he is going commando.

CS93 was 80 episodes of 1 hour (159 chapters of 30 min), CS 1977 was168 chapters of 30 min so 84 episodes of 1 hour. The first version from 1966 was the shortest with 62 chapters of 30 minutes so it is equal to only 31 episodes of 1 hour .

The books are not that long actually. The Corazón Salvaje books were sold monthly back in the 40's or 50's. There was only three of them and it was a pretty short story: "Corazón Salvaje", "Mónica" and "Juan del Diablo".

The version from 1966 is the only one that follows the original storyline right from the books. The one from 1977, to make it longer added the story of a vulcan erupting (the storyline was set in the Martinica Island) and how it affected the characteres (like Juán helping to get supplies from the ships, Mónica tending the hurt people, the massive hysteria and the rich being afraid of the poor people rebelling and stealing from their properties because they had plenty when they were dying out there). That was produced by Ernesto Alonso (coincidentally enough, the producer of "Tu o Nadie" and "Yo Compro Esa Mujer")

The version from 1993 added more characteres and talked more about the injustices commited by the rich and the government. They also made the government put a trap on Juan and they made that part longer and with more action. They changed the name of Renato D'Autremont for Andrés de Alcazar y Valle and they made him more of an antagonist, they also made Aimée a little more manipulative although both characteres still kept being pretty human but it was more clear that Zaratini wanted us to root for Juán and Mónica as a couple and not the other options.

The version from 2009 has combined "Yo Compro Esa Mujer" with the story, changing the backgrounds and they have added characteres from that story and more, they have also changed most of the names and characteres and how they fit into the story. The only names they kept were Juan, Aimée, Noel and Renato (only names, not last names). Aimée and Noel have changed alot and Mónica is now called Regina and she is more "spunky" than the original.

I don't wanna give away more so this is what I will say because I know some people are very enthusiastic about seeing the new version.

Jarocha thanks once again for all of your insightful info.I wonder how you feel what Mejia will do with Cuna de Lobos?

I was going to pop in every once in awhile to see everyones thoughts on CS once it started by i just might stay for the recaps and comments from the regulars.

Someone mentioned that Univision doesn't schedule two comedy novelas at the same time.

It seems they may have unintentionally done just that but the comments from the Caray crowd should be a riot and make my day.

Anon. I just checked what I wrote and I meant to say that Ernesto Alonso produced BOTH the 1966 and the 1977 version.

Cuna de Lobos, well, I think the idea of what he wants to do is interesting. Transforming that novela into a weekly series, but I don't want him to have any creative input. I'm really hoping he does what Jardinera said in the other line and picks a GOOD director with a nice vision to work with it while he sits back. Otherwise... ugh!.

Great recap, Gracias

To those that love Colunga, look at my new picture.
I'm really enjoying Amor Real, 2 hrs is a little much, but for Colunga anything.

This link was posted before for recaps to Amor Real.

http://foro.telenovela-world.com/~diane/amorreal/SumUniv1.HTM

It's in Spanish, however. Today was the recap of 11/11. Learned an interesting word, doncella = virgin. The padre asked Manuel if Matilde was one & she was. Now if Manuel knew that, why didn't Alejando know it about MJ?

Variopinta: Colunga looks so handsome, my favorite look for him is his "Amor Real" look.

Jarocha

Variopinta- Hmmm..I can think of a few reasons:

a)He was being an insensitive clod.
b)He was at the stage where he doubted everything about her and everything she said.
c)It made him feel less guilty about pressuring her into it.
d)He never actually slept with a virgin before, so had no idea what they were like.
e)All of the above.

The correct answer is e.
