Gancho Tuesday Feb. 2, 2010 Will Love Triumph Over All? Or Will Vengenace Be The Victor?
So, mientras tanto, what happened today? Beto continues his very logical, very wise argument for dropping all vengeance. What do you gain by hurting people? he asks. Well, for Connie, quite a lot of satisfaction, evidently. So much so that she's willing to lose Beto, the love of her life, to get it. She's taken Mau's money and kids. All that remains is to break his heart by causing Monita to stop loving him. And she'll do that by betraying the pact Mauricio made with Monita's mother. Two birds with one stone. Beto's not happy. He doesn't want to spend his life with a lady whose every waking moment is spent figuring out how to hurt others. Well, Connie's not for you, then my man.
Zoom over to Xime's apartment. But she's not there, of course. Rolu is, ensconced in his wheelchair and Marcos arrives to firm up their telephone agreement. Yes, Rolu will follow through on his plan to get Xime to sell her shares in Grupo Sermeño. Not for money, no...he wants nothing from Marcos. But he DOES want Xime to be completely dependent on him financially. That way she'll stay in the marriage. (Just in passing, recent research here shows that marriages are likely to last longer when the wife has a career and even more financial clout than the man. I have no idea what this means. But it's interesting.)
Meantime, our good-time gal is spending more and more time away from home....and with Lalu! Can Carlos' theory be on target? For some reason, she's feeding Lalu a bunch of guff about Arny being entranced with him. To what end? I understand why Rolu is promoting this pseudo- romance. But I don't get Ximena's part in it. Oh well, I'm frequently confused. Anyway, the conversation veers into eternal love territory and Lalu is already envisaging the bathroom towel set monogrammed with "L" for lujuria (lust, desire) and Lalu and "A" for amor and Arnoldo. Our romantic Ximena suggests "L" for Love instead and there the matter rests. Except for the biggie. YES, IT'S TRUE. SHE'S SICK OF ROLU. Oh migawd, I still can't believe it. She finds him "empalagoso" (sticky sweet and cloying). Man, whatever happened to that mad desire for our bad boy? Will be interesting to see where this goes.
The debate between Beto and Connie continues. Getting pretty rough, frankly. She's vowing to get the best of Monita in the ring, proving that she's better than the "asquerosa cucaracha" (revolting cockroach) not just in status and class but in battle. Beto says "over my dead body". Fine, snaps Connie. If I have to destroy you in order to get to her, I will. Okay, Elna June, we're gonna need more than chapstick to fix this lady up!
Lighthearted break time: Estrella is all dolled up and off to her audition. And Nieves and Don Cesar are in Xochilmico (sp?) for some quality time together. (I love Nieves and Don Cesar but you know, he is still married to a very nice lady that we met earlier in this novela.)
Okay. Back to the debate between Isabel and Mau. She's arguing that Hate is stronger than Love. He's arguing the contrary. Nice mirror image of the Beto-Constanza battle. But we finally get a peek into Isabel's murky romantic history. She's consumed by hate because she was mistreated, not only by those dogs who attacked her, but by the man she loved with all her heart.
With that teaser, the writers flip us back to Beto and Connie. He's angry because he realizes how little he really meant to Connie. She never did anything for him. On the contrary, she did him the enormous favor of being with a woman like her...of a higher class, she counters. And what's more, if he chooses to have a life at her side, he can have luxury, travel, money cars. No dice. You'll never have to work again! (Beto's beginning to look interested.) But nope, our barrio galan stands firm. You have to choose Connie. Love for me or vengeance. No dice on her part. Now the party starts getting rough. Can't believe I saw you as the mother of my children, he muses. And that's why Mauricio stopped loving you too. You're hot but you're not worth taking to bed. Thank God my little Betito is already in heaven and doesn't know what a harpy his mother is, he continues. But I forgive you...your darkness, your hate. You never learned to love. You're completely empty. Whew!. you'd think Constanza would just curl up and die but she holds her grudging ground. Gotta give her points for persistence.
Brief relief with an Arny/Rolu conversation. Big bro is getting advice from little bro on how to win Ximena back. Love letters, wine, flowers, chocolate, massages with warm scented oils (sure you're not gay Arny?) Upshot. Rolu is considering a love letter.
Back to Beto. He's momentarily distracted by the French maid, Brittney Sofia, who's being sent to answer the door. Enter Papa Marcos. He's horrified to find this lowlife naco in his daughter's home. He calls Beto a "poca cosa" and our boy fires back that Connie is "muy poca cosa" for him. Exit Beto. More outrage from Papa to come. But not before we flip a few more scenes.
First, the barrio. Jacqui's looking for Nieves. Doesn't find her and goes off with Mona for a coffee (Since our little boxer doesn't have the whiskey or cognac our foxy lady would prefer).
And Mauricio and Isabel continue their long-winded debate. He's still arguing for her re-appearance in Monita's life, coming clean with the past, so to speak. She's still arguing that Connie's no threat because "the man" she's talked about will control her. We have to wait while the truth is leaked out drip by drip, but here are the preliminaries. For a long time she didn't know if Monita was the result of rape or the child of the man she loved. But that man betrayed her. Accused her of being at fault in the attack, leading the men on. When he learned she was pregnant, he kicked her out. That's why she hates Monita.
Back to the barrio. (These writers are such a tease.) Jacqui and Monita are bonding over coffee and their mutual dislike of Jacqui's daughter. Jacqui admits she's no "pera en dulce" (sweetheart) but Connie's nasty qualities come from her father. Monita then brings up the big question. Beto's like my brother--do you think Connie really loves him? Answer: Well, love's not a priority for Connie. Vengeance is. That brings up the threat Jacqui talked about earlier. Moni thinks it was being thrown out of the neighborhood but Jacqui drops the bomb that Connie believes Moni's mother is still alive. Outrage. Don't mess with my mom. She's dead. It broke my heart. I held her ashes in my hand. How dare she mess with my memories of my mother. Jacqui agrees. And admits her envy. Monita gave her bone marrow for her mother. Connie wouldn't even give Jacqui the leftover fat from a liposuction! Yikes, what a way with words, this lady.
Another lighthearted break. We see Estrella first performing in another French maid's costume, then in a slinky dress. Fending off a sleazeball until he tells his wife about her. Audition goes well. Great triumph. All excited. Everyone smiling. Cut!
Back to Drama Central. Connie's cozying up to Papito, asking him to not be angry with her for letting Beto in the house. Those people rob, points out Dad. Can't believe you're going out with such trash. You must take after your mother. Yes, he did come to rob me, Papi, and to beg me to take him back. But I kicked him out. That's why he was so angry. But now....dum di dum dum...tell me what Isabel was at your hotel.
And to wrap up the episode, we finally hear the rest of Isabel's story. Before kicking her out, Marcos did give her money "to take care of it". But she couldn't bring herself to have an abortion. What if it was his child? No way to prove it then. But after the bone marrow transplant, the doctor kept some blood and she had it tested. Monita is indeed Marcos' child. That's the reason he's come here. He's the true father of Valentina.
And we're all looking impactados....or would be if we hadn't already figured this out a few episodes ago.
Previews:
Estrella has the role in the new telenovela!
Marcos tells Connie she can't touch Valentina.
Vocabulary:
pescar una infección= catch an infection "pescar" means to fish so it's interesting how it's similar to our English phrase
trepadora =social climber (Connie talking about Monita)
caer come un costal de piedras = to fall like a ton of bricks (lit. a bag of stones)
la calentura = sexual arousal, Beto talking about Connie.
sin vuelta de hoja= lit. without a turn of the leaf, without changing
empalagoso = sickly sweet, cloying (could this be our Rolu!?)
esquivando los guamazos de la vida = Monita's answer to Jacqui's "How are things?" Basically means avoiding the little irritations, roadblocks in life. "guama" means nuisance and "guamazo" is an icky intensifier of the word
te van a caer los ojos = Connie chiding Beto for ogling the French maid lit. your eyes are going to fall out
salió de su papa = she took after her dad
no soy una pera en dulce = lit. I'm not a pear in syrup. I'm no sweetheart
lujuria = lust, lechery
Dicho of the Day:
Del dicho al hecho hay mucho trecho. Lit. It's a long way from the word to the deed.
We say: Easier said than done.
So will Rolu win back Ximena? Well.....Del dicho al hecho hay mucho trecho.
Labels: gancho
I'm souring a bit on Rolu. He's just not going about wooing Ximena the right way, that is, honestly. Faking his paralysis and selling shares to make Xime dependent are bad guy tricks. If he has any hope, he has to give her a "magic day" or something like that, with a heart shaped something, the way our galans always do.
Loved Estrella in her screentest!
Anyway, thanks for your rapidissimo recapos, always a pleasure
One interesting note about Isabel's deadly eyes. I think they may have her wearing dark contact lenses to make her look more evil. She's in another telenovela that comes on right before Gancho and while heavily made up, her brown eyes look a lighter color than in Gancho.
This was a seriously fine recap. I loved all the vocab. And you are so right, Judy, as to Coni needing more than chapstick to fix her face. Why that child will need a whole Lancome counter to fall on her if she doesn't cut out the nasty behavior.
Coni, hermana, think, frownlines. Bad for your oh so pretty, pouty face. Your pursuit of vengeance could lead to the need for a Botox intervention. Oh, but wait! Perhaps she would need a nice doctor to do the injections. Hmmm, can anyone think of a suave, debonair physician to help out poor Coni?
And, doggone if you Gancho regulars didn't call this sibling relationship business. Nice work at reading the TN tealeaves, so to speak.
Hombre, good advice to Rolu. Hope he listens to you. I think it may be an understatement to say that a man whose plan to gain back the love of Xime might not want to trick her into giving him a major share of her assets. If our Xime is a smart as I suspect she is, she won't like that at all.
Kris:
Your plot for sib relationships is DIABOLICALLY complex.
Another nice episode of Gancho...
I did notice that Isabel has a wry sense of humor. Having told Mao that she didn't abort Moni because she thought that there was a chance that she was the child of the man she loved. Mao added,"a sick love." She quipped, "There are those that are healthy?" Score one for Isabel.
Both Ximena and Estrella sparkled. More of them, please.
Again, I know it's unlikely, but for me, Lalo and Ximy are meant for each other, they know, but neither will admit it. Well, there's of course the matter of Lalo's gaiety.
Carlos
Carlos
Oh yes, Coni, has a long way to go but those tears were real. There's a heart under there somewhere. It'll take a while but I think she will redeem herself in the end. Isabel too, I think. If she really hates Moni why is she trying so hard to protect her now? Of course she now knows that Moni is Marcos' daughter. Maybe that has softened her toward the girl.
Rolu is indeed flirting with the dark side once again. The deception about his ability to walk is one thing but this need to tie her to him by making her financially dependent on him is nasty. On the other hand -- if he doesn't end up with Xime in the end what can he do about those tattoos?
I do like Marcos and Jacki together. Sparks fly when they are on screen together.
Güera from Syracuse
Coni, Coni, Coni...sistah you disappoint me. Good for Beto for standing his ground. It looks like he not only has to bring Coni around but daddy dearest too.
I think I loathe Isabel even more now. First she hated her daughter because she thought Moni was a product of rape, now she hates her daughter because she is the product of a painful love experience. What a witch, like she's the only one in the world who's had her heart broken. Patooey!!
Thanks Judy!!
Judy, you never disappoint. Never. Always a perceptive and thorough recap, with a truckload of vocab to boot.
I can see why Xime is sick of Rolu, actually. That cloying clinginess gets really annoying. He needs to figure out how to be loving to Ximena (yes, some big gesture may be necessary) while still being the arrogant bad boy she fell in love with.
I loved that Margarita Magaña (Estrella) was back in her maid uniform from Guapos for her audition. It even still had the B-L monogram! At least she got to wear the dress uniform and not the everyday pink one.
And yes, Julia, I too am disappointed in our Rolu. But alas, people desperate to regain love do desperate, stupid things.
Carlos, thanks for noting that repartee between Isabel and Mauricio. And it's an interesting philosophical question. Are there any healthy loves, romantically speaking?
There are those that contend that all love which is exclusive and relies on both partners feeling "special" and therefore implies some possessiveness is not healthy. And many disappointed lovers have branded all infatuation as a form of temporary insanity.
But I'm sure that "true love" will triumph in the end. Alas, Isabel is not destined to be part of it. Unless she recognizes what a fine friend Alicia is and appreciates her rather than just using her.
Elna June...funny riff on cosmetic therapy for Connie. I will say the actress is doing a terrific job on an unsympathetic character. Her face showed such conflict and pain yesterday; and her anxious attempts to get back in her dad's good graces were sad-making. She's like an exaggerated mirror of all the things humans do to defeat themselves and cause their own misery, while hurting others. Alas, there's a little bit of Connie in most of us, I fear.
Kris, ohmigosh..were you a biology major? That scenario of yours reminded me of all those genetic charts we had to make once upon a time. I'm ready to accept the parentage as it now stands. Although we STILL don't know who Beto's dad is. And surely that should come out...no? Time will tell.
Judy, you consistently set a high standard of excellence. You interweave a theme, and along with details, pose thought-provoking questions. I always learn something new i.e. marriages lasting longer when the wife has a career and financial means. Very interesting. The vocabulary was stellar and the dicho was one of my favorites - ever.
Enjoyed "results may vary" and "we're gonna need more than chapstick to fix this lady up!" Excellent!
Rolu morphed into the antithesis of what attracted Ximena initially. He personified the essence of a bad boy - disdainful, reckless and of course, seemingly unattainable. Now that he is her devoted husband, where is the challenge? Be careful what you wish for. I think Rolu needs to revert to being independent. He must be affectionate, but not fawning, kind but not patronizing, sweet but not sickening.
In answer to your question "Can these heartless females be saved?" I think Coni probably will be (especially as she is now Moni's half sister). There is a heart beating, although very faintly.
Isabel? NO! Absolutely not! She has chosen hate at every turn, even after finding out that Moni is Marcos' daughter. I'm with you Sylvia. Color me repulsed (even more than I was previously). Blech.
Glad Estrella is shining...
Diana
While I'm happy for Estrella's triumphant audition, not sure how a burgeoning baby will fit into her career plans.
And for now, what I'd really like to see is for Salvador to be sprung from the "manicomio" and Oscar and Jerry go back to being bumbling buffoons rather than a cold-blooded killer of a lawyer (in Oscar's case).
On the surprising marriage results. One cynical thought would be this: when men have a financial advantage to staying married, they're more likely to stick around.
Well, whatever. I'm just glad if the present divorce trend could reverse a bit. It tears parents and children apart. It's an emotional and financial disaster. The number of single or divorced mothers raising children in Ohio is enormous. That can't be good for anybody.
Ahoy all, I had guests last night and couldn't spend enough time on Judy's divine recap. I enjoyed it SO much more this morning, aja! Judy, I'm amazed at all the great vocab you are able pick out of the rapid-fire conversation. I think you have a real knack for languages.
I very much enjoyed the scene between Jacqui and Moni. This could be an interesting friendship.
Judy, ITA about Sal, let's get him out of the nuthouse pronto! I hope they don't make us wait too long for this.
Also, thanks to Charles for the book recommendation. I can't wait to try reading it. Hombre, good to know it can be downloaded to my laptop.
I'll tell ya', I like any scene with Jacqui. She's been a great addition to the cast. The scene the other day when Jerry worried that "he smelled like a loser" and she quipped, "Well yes, a little bit" with a Gallic shrug was just divine. She's playing an evil mom in a show that comes on right before Gancho (I see the tail end of it)and is wearing some fabulous clothes while she schemes with equally evil daughter. Don't really know the plot because I just see a few minutes before Gancho starts, but seems to be the old Cinderella story. And "Squeaky" is in it! Haven't seen her since Heridas...but you've probably spotted her in Amor Real, no?
Thanks all for the appreciation of the vocabulary, although I imagine most of you already know it. Still, I'm in this to learn the language so I do it for anybody out there who is like me...hungry to learn more.
I love the vocab. The new ones are fun and the old friends are worth repeating.
Your vocabulary is incredible. I have read and reread it..I feel like I'm really learning here.
Hombre, down loading a free book to my computer, now that would be great..I'm going to check it out!
Not presently getting Gancho in Nashville, I'm keeping up by reading the recaps! Hope the analog signal is returned soon, I wish I could have seen the fun in the closets yesterday, but alas..
I see (saw!) something in Coni's "vaca" eyes as well, just a flicker. Maybe her meanness comes from pain, not inherent badness. ...hope againt hope she is one of the good girls in el fin!
I'm a bit sad for Rolu. All that time running from Ximena only to fall for her when she doesn't want him anymore. Yeah, yeah he wasn't the best guy but in a way he has paid for his attitudes in the past.
Who is squeaky? I'm thinking Ingrid Martz but I'm not sure. She was in both Heridas de Amor and Tormenta en el Paraíso.

That conversation between Beto and Connie was one of the most grown up conversations I've ever seen in any show (not just tns). He really laid the truth of herself out there for her, and chose to continue on the wrong path. Oh, Connie!
I'm glad Isabel finally straightened out how Moni could be the product of a gang rape, and the daughter of Marcos. But she did drag it out, didn't she? Mau looked like he was about to explode. And she still hasn't revealed who the mystery man is and how Connie is tied to him. Now, on to solve the mystery of Beto's parentage.
I have been trying to think of who would be the perfect match for our Xime, and I can't think of one of our characters. Lalu comes close, but our Xime is a tigress in the bedroom, and needs someone who can keep her satistfied there as well. Rolu really needs to step up his game if he hopes to re-conquer her heart.

Vivi.....delighted your DVR is up and running. But did you get a snow day? I know you were hoping to be able to sleep in this morning.
Couldn't agree more. Beto's speech to Connie is one we should all remember when we are tempted to wreak vengeance on others. I remember Melinama saying way back that these telenovelas are "morality plays" and that lesson was a beaut'. Elegant in its simplicity and directness. Yay, Beto!
Hopefully, some of those seeds that got planted will bear fruit.
I guess I'm at a table for one, again. I would like to see Isabel redeemed as well. After all, she IS Monita's mother. Marcos described her as an iceberg in bed, and certainly she's sheer ice in other ways, but I keep hoping that there's a bruised and tender heart underneath that barrier of ice. And that something dramatic and life-changing will rescue her.
Carlos
Carlos
Judy, your wanting redemption for Isabel shows your kindness and belief in the human spirit.
Vivi and Carlos, I'm sad not to have seen the Coni/Beto exchange. I can tell it was powerful and evocative. I have seen and sensed their undeniable chemistry and believability.
Diana
With Oscar, it's another matter, though. I can see him and Jerry in the same cell, finally getting to be TOGETHER. That would be fun.
Speaking of Ingrid Martz and Querida Enemiga in the Gancho line makes me remember this telenovela. How many of the actors do you recognize?
Jarocha
Diana (trying to tear myself away and get back to work)
That was one of the most succesful teen novelas ever, Otto Sirgo (Salvador in Gancho) and Manuel "Flaco" Ibañez (Dr "Meño", I can't remember his name in Gancho) were also in it. It was like a pre-reunion casting for Gancho.
Jarocha
Jarocha...loved that promo and seeing all our familiar actors in their salad days. Nice to know they're aging right along with us.
Vivi...Are you still in your pj's? Are they anything like Don Cesar's? Don't know if you've seen him "au lit" but he's all done up in a huge version of footed baby jammies, and STILL wearing dark glasses. With that, and the hair, well, it's quite a visual.
And they say waking up and getting up at the same time is actually best. Something about keeping your Circadian rhythms in gear...or maybe there's another reason.
The one thing I don't want (although it was funny in Heridas) was when Squeaky forgave her wicked aunt for all the heinous things she'd done...and basically Diana Bracho snarled I don't care if you forgive me. I'm not a bit sorry! Now there's a baddie for you.
It seems like it would be interesting to be a tn actor. You always get to work with familiar faces again at some point, and for many, many years. And if you like each other, it would be fun to have inside jokes about the past tns you've worked on together, especially the bad ones.
My parents for years and years only had the old-fashioned double bed and when we lived around the finger lakes in New York where there were plenty of thunderstorms, they often ended up with two frightened little girls between them also. How they managed to ever engender my baby brother, I don't know. Must have been during a dry spell.
- Rolu and Xime need to stop screwing around and call it quits. As much of a delight as Ximena is, when taken in small doses, she is not marriage material. Maybe someday. Which is not a defense of Rolu - still, at the end of the day, an immature and selfish playboy.
- Judy, I am fascinated by what you said about marriages where the wife makes the money. HINT HINT: I could easily get used to being a kept dude.
- Coni: last night I was thinking that she'd look cute in jean shorts and a tank top. Five years from now they won't fit because after she finished screwing people over, she took to the couch with, at first, one pint of ice cream and became addicted to The View, Springer, and Povich. Ten years later, she's wearing muu muus and being treated for diabetes and calling Oscar who won't talk to her because she owes him $100K+ in legal fees.
Tee hee. As ye sow, etc. I guess she could go back to her u-trou emporium to raise cash. People who knew her back in the day will walk in, see her and say, "Coni?"
- Julia, don't you go all Lorena Bobbitt on us now.
- Carlos and Hombre, thanks for your respective recaps. I read them and enjoyed them immensely. The cold and snow here over the weekend just flat killed any comments I might have had. Getting too old to put with winter.
- Judy, thanks to you for one more in your first rate way of recapping!
Hmmmm...you have an interesting future scenario for Connie. Can't imagine her in a muu-muu but stranger things have happened. I remember Rosemary Clooney morphing from a slender, perky blonde singer to someone so much larger it was hard to reconcile the two. Life and emotional setbacks can do that to you.
I have to agree, Ximena is not marriage material. Too interested in the next pair of tight pants. Nevertheless, I'd like her to find "happily ever after" just so she'd have someone to watch over her. The pillow-smothering-prone Jero big brother doesn't count!
In fact, that would be a nice day trip for you from Columbus. Nice little old-fashioned downtown to wander, plus the Rosemary Clooney house. And don't forget TBLMOE wannabe George Clooney is from there, too.
Loved the recap. Sorry we drop off the earth once in a while. I'm not abusing my skillet (or Mike) not to worry...
Oh Emilia..wish you hadn't mentioned Sara Lee. I'm lost in a food fantasy here. Have been having a lot of trouble with rosacea and have given up sweets to try and deal with it (I HAVE seen improvement) but ooooooh, the siren call of Sara Lee. Guess I better hurry up and chomp down on a big ol' bowl of salad. Grrrrrrr.
Susanlynn, I am REALLY enjoying AR in its entirety. Squeaky isn't challenged much in her character but she is incredibly beautiful in her costumes.
