Gancho Tuesday March 2, 2010 Dire Warnings From The Paranormal Palace: Will Monita Pay Attention?

Is it just me or does it always seem that the most exciting part of the episode is some pivotal scene shown in the previews? Today's was a dilly. But then, as Hombre has noted, the writers are clever in the way they always leave us yearning for more. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, though. Here's what happened today.

We start with Nieves getting out of Isabel's car (valet parking no less) to go confront Marcos. When she takes note of how expensive the car is, Isabel is happy to imply that it's not from Mauricio's money but rather part of Marcos' continuing care of her.
N: Well, he "pays for your favors" no doubt.
I: He values me, whereas you have to make do with that weird little shaggy-haired Cesar of yours.
N: That weird little man LOVES me.
I: Love is only for sentimental folks. I have a child with Marcos. Do you even know who fathered your Beto?
N: Someday you're gonna get what you deserve!
I: Tsk, tsk, you're the one who brought up "love".

Okay, Nieves is a tigress, but once again, our cold, composed Isabel has won this round. However, the tigress is ready to confront Marcos in his lair and to see if he'll actually admit to her face that he's the father of Valentina.

Dying to see what happens, but the scenes switches back to the cantina. Cesar is definitely looking the worse for wear. His disastrous porcupine coiffure appears to be wet and even more unattractive, God love 'im. All four men are sloshed, singing groggily with some accompaniment, and getting to that drunken affectionate soul brother stage.

But no affection chez Marcos. Nieves pushes her way in, all aflame. Marcos looks genuinely scared. Nieves uses an expression I've never heard before: "no dejar titere sin cabeza". Looked it up and the actual expression, at least in my dictionary is "no dejar titere con cabeza" and meants "to spare nobody". Well, anyway, you get the picture. She's reaming out Marcos and he's defending himself by saying he just found out recently that Valentina is his daughter and wants to make amends by getting to know her, giving her money and his "name" as well. Nieves, like Isabel, is completely opposed to this. No way!!!! No Marcos, no Isabel in Monita's life, not if Nieves has anything to do with it.

Back at the cantina, love's in bloom. The boys are toasting their romances while also noting (in Mauricio's case) how handsome he is and what a good guy (buena onda) he is as well. You too, Beto, Mauricio slurs. Handsome? No, buena onda. Well, one out of two. Beto laments that "buena onda" doesn't apply to Constanza, alas. She's still hell bent on vengeance.

For the pleasure of Carlos, Ms. Hellbent is thrashing around on the bed with a lot of shapely leg exposed. Seems she's locked in a nightmare à la Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow (remember that film with Sophia Loren?). Pregnant with her umpteenth child, a little Betito clamoring for a milanesa sandwich, another whelp running loose, loads of laundry to do, a drunken bum of a husband, slapping her butt and asking for dinner, our weary gal labors over the sink when lo! there appears the golden couple, Mauricio and Monita, dressed to the nines, ready to pick up their laundry. (Okay, longest sentence ever. Sorry.) Yep, seems the ever-pregnant Connie is the sole breadwinner. And Monita has morphed into a bitch, throwing the clean laundry on the floor so our poor Constanza has to do it all over again. Wow. Fun scene.

Back to the fight at the hotel. Isabel calmly reminds Nieves she can't forbid her to see her own daughter. Well, my love will protect her, blusters our little tigress, and departs; while Marcos calls after her and Isabel glares. Now, confrontation no. 2:
M: you love making people suffer, don't you?
I: I didn't bring her here. She insisted on coming.
N: But you didn't resist, right?
I. Offer me something. A glass of water.....
M: What do you really want?

Isabel goes on to explain that all this is Constanza's doing. She's the one who dropped the bomb, but now Isabel's taking advantage by proclaiming an immense love that doesn't really exist--and at the same time, poisoning Monita's mind against Marcos. I'll make sure she loathes you and has contempt for you....forever! You'll pay for hurting me, Marcos! Wow. Isabel wins another round. Is it possible the babies got switched in the hospital and Constanza is her actual, biological child? Just sayin'....

Now we're back at the Paranormal Palace where our favorite "maga titulada" is reading the cards for Monita. Our little monkey sniffs that she doesn't believe in stuff like this but the bruja assures her she needs to....'cause she's in big danger. Yep, darkness, confusion and danger are all around her. And she's torn between two people she loves, one of whom is lying to her, the other telling the truth. Well, gosh, this IS a "maga titulada". So far she's been right on the money every time. And I love the big heavy false eyelashes she's sporting.

Brief scenes to break up the tension. Oscar and faithful pup Jeronimo in the country house. Nurse going off duty. Oscar musing that he needs to find out what Monita knows. And take care of her. Uh oh!

Constanza, still in fetching deshabillé, is raiding the refrigerator, trying to recover from her nightmare. Mom up too. Ready to sermonize that if daughter would give up vengeance, she'd sleep better. Nevah! Nevah! I'll never stop hating Monita.

Back to Dad Marcos. He's twisting the knife as he assures Isabel he won't let her hurt Valentina. He'll protect her, give her unconditional love, money and his name....all the things he wouldn't give Isabel. Ouch! Feeling a little sorry for our viper. Noooo, she hisses, I'll make sure Valentina has what I have...a life of enduring regret and bitterness, hatred, contempt. This is WAR. I have arms. Okay, forget what I said about feeling sorry.

We're back at Creepy Castilla. Our bruja is asking Monita to choose three cards. Another uh oh. It's worse than she thought. Someone's going to kill her. And we have a montage of all Monita's enemies. Oscar: Yes. Eliminate her. Constanza: I want her out of my way. Do away with her! Isabel: If necessary, I'll kill her to keep you from knowing your daughter, Marcos. I gave her life. I can take it away.

Mama mia! this is scary. But wait! Bruja has an idea. Take this amulet, she pleads with Monita. It's a powerful talisman. And let me and Gaston do a cleansing. Monita protests (and you ain't gonna get any money either, witch!) but our good bruja persists. " Leave evil spirits", she intones. When Moni calls her crazy, she tells her to shut up so she can concentrate! Good scene. Much fun. Bet they had a blast filming it.

Next scene: Hooray and halleluja! Monita is out of those wretched clothes and in a nice, clean fuzzy pink robe. Raise the flag. She's gazing tenderly at her mom, asleep in her bed. Isabel actually looks rather sweet with her eyes closed. Lots of affectionate mommy dearest talk and then on to the bad stuff. Mom hesitantly explains that she's no longer at Mauricio's because he treated her badly once everyone had left. Oh dear, oh no, oh crap!

And speaking of....what a mess at Mauricio's! Stentorian snoring from the bathtub where Cesar and Beto have landed. Christian is spread out on an uncomfortable retro couch. Mauricio, unable to sleep with the snoring has gotten up-- and good thing-- because just then the doorbell rings. Enter Marcos, clearly horrified at the sight of Beto and Cesar. Let's just compress this scene before we go back to Mom and Monita. Cesar awakes in outrage to see "the enemy" in Mauricio's pad. Marcos is equally outraged to see this drunken clown in Mau's bathtub. Beto just wants a beer. Marcos suggests a bath instead. And then a job. Which he'll provide. He'll do it for Nieves. That gets Cesar in a lather. Nieves doesn't need anything from you. Staggers into fighting stance. Mauricio breaks it up. Manly Insults are exchanged. Beto's still asking for a beer. Mauricio and Marcos wisely leave to talk elsewhere. Christian, the only "mandilón" (guy with some props in the kitchen; can also mean "henpecked) is elected to make the coffee and breakfast.

So now, back to our Poisonous Parent. Isabel gradually spins the web that yes, Mauricio is a fine fellow but he's been hoodwinked by Marcos who is Evil Incarnate. Because of him, she had to abandon Valentina. Because of him she had to flee. Because of him her very life is in danger. But she's tired to running, tired of fearing. Together, she and her beloved daughter will stand up to this monster. This cur who engendered "la Momia", who left Nieves at the altar will not be allowed to destroy Monita's life like he destroyed Isabel's. No, no no! Monita's completely on board. Assures her mother that she never doubted her. Big hug. Isabel looks triumphant and gleeful. She's won Round 3. Alicia enters, is thrilled to see this happy pair reunited. Joins the group hug. Complete KO.

Now the scene shifts to Estrella and Gabriela. More pregnant bladder jokes. Gaby may be as tired of them as I am, or she just wants to return to the comfort of her own apartment. Needs her space, her private bathroom, her home base. But really appreciates the warmth and kindness of the vecindad. What would she have ever done without them? They discuss Isabel's hatred of her own daughter (Gaby can't believe it) and Monita's need for protection. Paula enters and confirms that Isabel is a real danger.

Meanwhile, still sweetness and light at Monita's. She's dressed and ready to go to the gym. Isabel is also looking natty, and quite motherly, in a dark suit. Monita hates leaving her alone. No problem. Mom would love to go to the gym and watch her darling girl train. But wait! Enter Oscar. With gun in his belt. Oh dear, oh no, oh crap! Can Isabel win this round? Or Monita?

You'll have to wait to find out. We're back with Mauricio and Marcos. Papa is noting what a bum Beto looks to be (tener pinta de ser un vago sin oficio ni beneficio, un mequetrefe) so he's got to offer him some kind of promising career. Mauricio notes that Beto would frankly be better off without Constanza. Maybe so, but Marcos is here to assure his daughters' happiness, both of 'em, and clearly Constanza loves this bum. And he loves her. Some further discussion of how Marcos didn't believe Mau at first but now realizes what a danger Isabel is. Her look froze his blood. Why she's even capable of ending Monita's life. At that, Mauricio's mouth hangs open. For way too long. He's clearly impactado. And maybe not too bright. But hey, "guapo" and "buena onda". You can't have everything. And there we end.

Previews:
Mauricio still impactado and open-mouthed, learns that Estrella is pregnant with Aldo's child.
Monita pulls a gun on Oscar (who's also armed) and he takes Estrella hostage.
Oscar starts to fire but Isabel throws herself in front of Monita and appears to be shot.
Narrator intones: Isabel's Evil knows no bounds, but tomorrow...the Inexplicable happens.
That's it folks. We're hooked again. Is there a 12-step group for telenovela addicts?

Vocabulary:
chido = fantastic (Mex. slang)
no dejar titere con cabeza = to spare nobody
maga titulada = certified wizard, conjurer, magician, soothsayer, whatever!
bañada en llanto = bathed in tears, Isabel describing Monita after their motherly talk yesterday
guarrada = mess. Marcos actually said "guarrapeta" to describe the mess at Mauricio's
abriste tu juego = "showed your cards", showed your game. Marcos, accusing Isabel
procurar = to take care of, secure,
tener pinta de ser un vago sin oficio ni beneficio = looks like a bum with no job, no career to speak of
mequetrefe =good-for-nothing

Dicho of the Day
El que a buen árbol se arrima, buena sombra le cobija.
Lit. he who takes cover under a good tree gets good shade. (if you stick to a good person, you will reap the benefits.) Now, the problem is: who are the good people and who are the bad? And will Monita ever figure it out?

Hi folks. Just got to read the rest of the comments on Carlos' blog line. Love your 'Isabitch" sobriquet for our evil madre, Julia. And please, I named my youngest Julia, no no dissing it as being uncreative. It's a classic and classy name.

Elna June, the best way to learn about basketball is to watch the NCAA tournament and listen to a good play by play at the same time. I consider basketball to be one of the most beautiful and graceful sports ever, in spite of the increasing violence of some of the play. It's truly poetry in motion. I "came of age" in Indianapolis and Indiana is a basketball-mad state. But I also love football (maybe because I was in love a few different times with football nuts.)

Sandy, c'mon girl, join us. It beats reading and thinking about what's going on in politics. And there's some truly awesome muscle development on display.

JudyB,

Amiga, you have a home away from home in Nashville, Tennessee living with my husband and son.....They would LOVE you......(said with the sounds of the Vandy/ Florida Gators game waffling in the background.).

JudyB

Up here in snow country where the winters can be so long b'ball helps keep our mind off our rust belt problems. Tonight was another oh so fun game to watch. Smooth, graceful, as close to ballet as sport can get. And we didn't choke on our new #1 status.

But back to other contests -- the tug of war over Monita, patron vs payaso fight for Nieves, Alas no Arnie vs Rolu.

But what a hoot was this episode -- Coni's dream wherein we finally saw Moni looked like a dream (before we saw her with the bruja still dressed like a nightmare. -- All the scenes with Bartola & Gaston. Notice how we all know that her words are spot on -- but the recipients have been thrown confusing clues that can lead them in the wrong direction if they misunderstand.

Great recap, JudyB, loved your Creepy Castilla.

Güera

Oh my goodness, that Isabel is a complete witch!! If these people would only chat amongst themselves I'm sure they would have enough ammunition against her, but nooooooo.

Marcos seemed a bit less self-assured in this episode. First at the receiving end of Nieves' wrath and then facing Isabel's true nature. Yikes! I'm curious how he will handle this.

I loved Coni's dream. That's pretty much how I fantasized her fate, except Monita would be much nicer of course. The actor who played her kid is in everything these days, isn't he?

Fantastic recap Judy! I like how you whisked us through the uncomfortable bits and lingered through the fun stuff. That's the way to do it amiga. Thanks!!

Judy,

Smashing job. Once again you've perfectly captured the fun. I think my favorite scene was Coni's pesadilla. Even with disheveled hair, the pregnant belly, the cotton smock, and the hideous red socks, she was still gorgeous. And what a snot Moni turned out to be. Oh, that's right, it was a dream.

I've tuned in to watch OSU and Ill. Vandy just won their game. They were looking good.Corazón Salvaje will have to wait a bit. The game just started.

Elna June,

We've just entered the high holy days of college basketball known fondly as March Madness. Teams are all striving to end the season with an invitation to the NCAA Tournament curiously referred to as the Big Dance which is the culmination of this sacred season. Teams winning the major conferences and those winning those conference tournaments get automatic bids and others are selected on merit and it is alleged by many... politics. There are always deserving teams who get passed over and their role is to then complain bitterly that there was bias and cronyism involved in the selection of other schools over them. At the moment Güera's school, Syracuse is #1 in the college rankings decided each week by a popularity contest which is always disputed by those overlooked. At the moment, schools supported by Judy (Ohio St.), Mike and Emilia (Kentucky), less so by Hombre (Maryland), and I (lowly Baylor) are in the top 25, meaning that they are popular right now with sports writers. At the moment it is almost certain that Syracuse, Ky, OSU, and Maryland will all be invited. Also, Sandy's Tenn. If Baylor remains popular (and keeps winning) we may be as well. There are also womens' teams, and I believe that we are all in the running there as well. Sandy's Tenn is currently one of the highest ranked lady's team and I have a crush on there coach who strikes me as something of a dominatrix. Our coach at Baylor is a blond cutie. I suspect all of our girly teams will make the ladies' tourney. So pick a team (California has a bunch) and come along. it gets pretty frenetic as March progresses. Hope that this helps.

Carlos

Hi all. Up waaay past my bedtime to watch us win our last game of the season and clinch a spot at the top of the Big 10. Mucho happiness in Gancholandia tonight with Syracuse, Kentucky, Ohio State and Baylor all looking good. Will be back in telenovela mode tomorrow morning. See ya'.

Congratulations on your team's victory Judy. It's a great way to end the evening and definitely worth staying up for.

Judy,

Thank you so much for this recap. And many congratulations on your team (Ohio??) winning the Big Game.

Carlos:
The basketball tutorial was much appreciated. I went on the Sports Illustrated website and found that they have a college basketball section that I found most helpful. I was delighted to discover that my alma mater, UC Berkeley, often referred to here on the West Coast as "Cal" is first on the list for the Pac 10. I also noted that hubby's alma mater, Stanford, was way down on the list. This seems to me to be an auspicious start to my career as a college basketball fan.

Today's learning- Being number 1 in some group called Pac 10 = good. I hope we don't have to play Judy's team, though. They sound fabulous. And how could I not check out a sport that you, dear Judy, call poetry in motion? I'll try finding a Cal game and watching it soon.

As to today's episode of Gancho, these actors could make garbage sorting look interesting. What a great cast! I am very sorry to say that Alicia looks to be right back under Hissabel's thumb. I hate that.

Sandy, all my children are sports nuts, too. Usually, while Hubby and the kids (32, 31 and 29 years of age) are yelling at the obscenely large television in my living room I am reading a good book. I do love to look up from my reading once in a while to watch their faces...it is so much fun to see people get excited about their teams.

Hay, are any of you Gancholandians watching CS, or as my husband likes to call it, "The Fat Pirate"? I tell him that large loose linen shirts would make anyone look fat on TV.

But, I'll admit to you guys that dear Sr Yañez is so over the top I feel like he speaks his dialogue in ALL CAPS. so far, I just can't get into it. Gancho has spoiled me for bad acting.

Elna June, looking at the ages of your children I think you must have been verrrrrrry busy for a few years. Chapeau.

Watching sports as an adult can be a wonderful relief from other cares; but so can reading a book (or watching a ridiculous telenovela like CS. I'm loving it because IT IS SO BAD).

But to me, the incredible grace and strength of a truly talented basketball player is as riveting as watching a prima ballerina or an incredibly gifted jazz dancer perform. The same can be said for some of the incredible pass catches these young football players manage to make, leaping over the defender, twisting wildly backward and yet still managing to catch, and hold onto the ball, as they slam into the ground. Yes, poetry in motion is the only way to describe it.

Sylvia...you're right, it was a great way to end the evening. Although my little hamster mind kept circling and circling around again, wondering whether Evan should go to the pros next year.

He is actually a shy young man (our coach had to teach him to come into a room with confidence and look people in the eye) and he likes being on campus and around his friends. Life on the road with those tough older players....well...my maternal side hopes he stays for one more year.

The coaches in the Big 10 have figured out ways to neutralize him somewhat, and that will increase next year, but when 3 players are focused on him, that frees our other young men to shine. So....hope he stays.

Julia, my astute young engineer! yesssss...no doubt that IS the way Constanza sees Mauricio and Valentina. We see the world the way WE ARE, not the way the world is. And since Constanza would not hesitate to behave in that cruel, humiliating fashion, if she were on top, she naturally assumes Monita would too.

Poor baby....she needs a session with our "maga titulada" and Gaston to straighten her out.

Oh Güera..yes, Congrats on a well-played game. All the pundits were gleefully speculating about Syracuse stumbling now that they're no. 1....but they didn't. I've watched so many great performances by that team over the years. Wish Carmelo Anthony had stuck around a little longer. Hope that trend is about to change.

And speaking of performances...yes, our cast continues to sparkle and our writers do too...even as they drag this one out.

Sandy, when I was a somewhat little girl and my parents would have get-togethers, I quickly figured out it was more fun to be in the TV room with the dads, watching sports, than in the kitchen with the moms, doing dishes and also dishing the dirt.

However, my oldest daughter is totally bored by sports. Son only watches English soccer. Youngest daughter prefers baseball. Husband has to avoid watching the Ohio State games because his hostility factor gets triggered (bad for heart). So it's me and the cat in the family room.

Judy: A flavorful concoction from start to finish. Sweet, savory and sublime! The title was a tantalizing tidbit and perfect for the exceptional recap. The vocabulary and dicho were extraordinary. You served us a remarkable repast.

Amiga, thank you for vividly drawing such a clear picture of what seemed to be a fun episode. I loved "fetching deshabillé", "drunken affectionate soul brother stage" and "poisionous parent". Yes, I also feel Coni and Isabel were separated at birth!

Carlos, your praise for Coni is commendable given her smock and sock attire. I wish I had seen it!

EJ, I am also sad Alicia has succumbed to Isabel's lies. Ack.

Sylvia, I agree that those in Isabel's orbit need to "talk amongst themselves". It's so frustrating. But, darn, she really can be convincing, can't she?

Best of luck to all of the basketball enthusiasts and may your teams win!

Judy, I hope you aren't getting any more snow?

Diana

JudyB,

Evan Turner should get player of the year, and most likely will leave for the pros! Got that from Jack in TN!!!! Congrats to all the great b' ball teams represented by Gauncholand. My only issue with the thing is the fact that the times of the games are unpredictable, making it difficult to plan for the weekends for months at a time, the wonderful dinner invite invariably conflicts with an important game and certain people don't want to go!! Of course, the person having a novela habit should keep quiet about the person with a sports habit.

I'm saving your yummy recap for the 2 hr drive + plane ride home. Thanks in advance for my trip fun.

Sandy in TN ( phone won't take my sign in!)

Good morning Diana and Sandy. Diana, thanks for those "tasteful" words of praise. With your language skills, YOU should be the recapper, not I. Gotta fix you up with a VCR m'dear, because you're clearly a natural.

Sandy, I sympathize with your frustration at missed dinner parties. My oldest daughter feels the same way. There have been Ohio State football games that conflicted with her social plans. However, this lady rules the roost. But there was a crisis when the DVR didn't record the game poor Jeff had to miss watching. Luckily my son-in-law was able to find some podcast on the computer. Still...things were mighty tense for a time.

Good morning everyone.

Sandy, hope you have a safe trip home, there is still lots of nasty weather out there.

I, too, am watching CS and more or less liking it because, as Judy says, it's SO BAD that it contstantly cracks me up. The super "dramatic" narrating, the ridiculous overacting, it's really more like a spoof than an actual telenovela. Luckily I don't have to give it my full attention and it's on so late (for me) that I'm always a day behind anyway.

EJ, I'm afraid The Fat Pirate is going to stick in my head forever, too funny!! EY doesn't really do it for me but I can see how he could be charismatic for some. YES, HE DOES SPEAK IN ALL CAPS, drives me batty. Thank goodness for "mute".

Sylvia...Remember that awful Hitchcock movie The Birds? I remember going to it with some sarcastic college friends and laughing and making fun of it all the way through the show. Great fun. Corazon Salvaje lends itself to just this outrageous ridicule. Just sorry I'm watching it by myself...I'd love to share the hilarity with some others.

Poor Susanlynn...hope she doesn't hear about the "Fat Pirate" sobriquet. Actually, I don't think Yañez is fat...just really BIG and with a BIG voice and a GREAT BIG DESIRE FOR VENGENACE WHICH OTHERS DON'T UNDERSTAND. Poor baby.

Good morning Carlos...forgot to note that Baylor won convincingly last night also, coming from behind. Way to go. May we all make it to the Final Four! Wouldn't that be great!? Syracuse, Baylor, Ohio State and........

Sandy, I hope your "Jack" is wrong and that Evan stays for another year. (But of course I want him to get player of the year honors.) Last night the student section was chanting "ONE MORE YEAR, ONE MORE YEAR". I truly think he would like to stay. Ojala!

Ah, Lady Judith, your use of fetching deshabille brings to mind a wonderful old SNL skit. Oh, do enjoy, won't you?

Actually, I don't think EY is fat, far from it. In fact I thought he looked pretty damned good in his adult diaper frolicking in the surf, aha! But YES HE IS A BIG BOY WITH BAD HAIR AND WILL NO DOUBT CUT A WIDE SWATH OF VENGEANCE as you aptly point out. I agree, it would be much more fun to watch and laugh with someone else. Alas, I'm usually stuck watching solo, sigh.

The Birds...yes simply dreadful but it sure creeped me out in the day. It was filmed on the northern coast not far from. Even today whenever I drive through Bodega Bay I look skyward.

Mike, OMG that's hilarious!!! Good one.

Goodness gracious, Tales of Ribaldry indeed! I'll take Mel Gibson in "fetching deshabillé" any day. Actually, this is pretty much just what we're seeing in Corazon Salvaje. Only diff is SNL is deliberately funny. CS is just as hilarious unintentionally. Thanks Mike! (now I've forgotten all about basketball).

Well, Moni finally changed clothes last night... good, but was EVERLAST logo across her butt a great improvement? She desperately needs to bond with her sister so they can exchange tips. Coni can give Moni fashion hints and Moni can help Coni with her people skills.

Isabel would excel in a sales position. She is so darn persuasive that even knowing how evil she is, I still catch myself falling under her spell. Fortunately, we get to see her eyes rolling which helps keep us centered.

Judy, after the game a bunch of fans were waving around plastic inflatable sharks. What was the significance of that? Congratulations to Ohio St. and Syracuse on last night's games.

Carlos

Thanks for another fine recap, Judy. I like the way you toss in some other languages, such as French ("But no affection chez Marcos." and "Constanza, still in fetching deshabillé"). Also liked the confrontations between Nieves and Isabel. Your whole recap was chido (including the vocab :)

I really laughed at Connie's nightmare. But my biggest laugh yesterday was when, in Corazon Salvaje, the hero, on an ocean liner, after knocking a lady's purse overboard in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, at night, just dove right in, got it back in two shakes, and popped back on board! (Judy, I like long sentences, too).

Hi Carlos. I'll have to ask Nickster about the inflatable sharks (although I'm not sure he's following basketball). Probably has something to do with Club Trill which was a blog started by one of the senior walk-ons on the team. (Maybe it's his nickname.)

He never developped into a player but got quite a following on the blog and most of the fans were decked out in gray Club Trill shirts. That is the most organized fans support we've ever had, thanks to his efforts.

Enthusiasm for b-ball is pretty tepid in Columbus, in spite of our (to me) impressive teams and Coach Matta.

Rather than listen to the tv announcers, I always mute the television and listen to the play by play by Ron Stokes, who used to be a fabulous guard for Ohio State and whose daughter now plays on the women's team. He didn't say anything about the sharks, so I'm out of the loop, amigo.

Mike --
Thanks for the tales of ribaldry --too funny --and oh so close to many of our telenovelas.

Güera

Hi Hombre. I just finished watching my tape of CS as my lunchtime treat. That show is absolutely the funniest thing going! We're all going to be laughing our heads off for months. To throw in a little more French, it's so over-the-top "declamatoire" in its acting, that I'm just in stitches.

Yep, that's it, Carlos. 'The Shark" is his nickname. You see it in this hysterical youtube "Rainmaker" video of him making all these incredible shots and demonstrating that he really can play basketball in spite of his benchwarming status during games. Google Club Trillion if you want a good laugh (after watching Mike's SNL's clip, of course)

All right. If Judy B and the Capn are watching CS I had better just suck it up and enjoy the ride.

As to the Birds, location shots, and the location of Gancholandians...I live on top of English Hill above Bodega (the village where Hitchcock made the movie) and have a distant view of Bodega Bay and the Pacific.

Cap'n, with your navigation skills, now you can place me on a map!

Hey, I thought of one more good thing about watching 'The Fat Pirate'. EY speaking in ALL CAPS means that I can understand him most of the time. Cool. That will add to my delusion that I am really learning Spanish.

EJ, looking for the silver lining in a truly awful TN cloud...

Oh dear, I am afraid I am going to have to start recording The Fat Pirate. Sounds like prime fodder for The Soup.

How is it that Mauricio was suffering less than the other guys? He is known to be a non-drinker, yet he didn't seem any more drunk than Beto (for whom wine is like water) although he seemed to be downing as much tequila. And the next morning, he seemed fine.

Yes, EJ...CS is MUCH easier to understand. Juan speaks LOUD and SLOW and there is no super-fast chilango slang like we're dealing with here. Furthermore, just about every sentence is a cliché so you know what they're going to say before they say it. Altogether restful...and funny as hell.
+ + +
I wondered about that too, Julia. I guess because Mauricio's the hero, he has paranormal (let's sling that word around again) powers of recovery....in addition to being "guapo" and "buena onda".

Judy, once again thank you for giving us such a marvelous recap.

I'm still behing you all but I can perfectly remember Constanza's nightmare for some reason. I think I just found it hilarious when I first saw it and then, when some of you mentioned something like that being Coni's ideal fate months ago, I kept thinking back to that scene.

Sandy: there's not an aquivalent for an Emmy in Mexican television. The only award show we have is the TVyNovelas awards but those are only for Televisa's shows, no other network gets included. The pre-nominations are decided by the magazine staff and then people vote for their favorite, then the nominees are published in the magazine. The public can keep voting and they get half the vote for the winner, the other half is decided by the judges: a selected group from the writers of the magazine. This is more a popularity contest between Televisa's stars and shows than anything else.

We do have our own Oscar type of award for movies. It's called the Ariel award and it is given by the Mexican Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences. They have a big gala and serve dinner. It is the most prestigious award for the entertainment business but it doesn't get televised because it's a very long event and they fear they won't get good ratings and also, most movie actors are not part of any network. You can find the winners on journals the next day and pictures of the event on most movie magazines.

For theather we have the APT awards from the group of press specialized in theater (Agrupación de Periodistas Teatrales). Those awards are also considered prestigious and important because most critics were important producers, actors and directors of theater plays back in the day. This award is also not televised for the same reasons as the Ariel.

Elna June: Silvia Navarro was nominated for Best Actress this year at the APT awards :). I don't think she will feel bad about the TvyNovelas awards but her fans are pretty upset.

My mom used to have CS on when we were having dinner. Mostly to have some kind of background sound and make fun of the happenings of the novela. I truly tried to give it a chance at the begining. However you do get tired of it after a while. After the first few weeks we had to say "Ya basta". There's a point when so much "YO SOY JUAN DEL DIABLO" and "salvaje" (insert either lip-biting and orgasmic voice here) get tiring. I now only watch it every month since that's the time it takes for something actually happening on that novela.

Jarocha- I'm sure Silvia is wonderful on stage as well. Glad she got nominated for that award, but it is just ridiculous that she did not get nominated for a novel award for her work in MEPS. She was hands down the best leading lady in all of the novelas last year.

Sylvia,

Tomorrow we go to on a search to gather up the ingredients for the cochinita pibil. Fortunately, here we have some very good sources including a close by supermercado, Fiesta Mart which will have everything we need... I think. I've found no dearth of recipes upon which to pattern my attempt. My profa was here today and tells me that her version is excellent, but then she is from Guadalajara. We'll see how things go. Every time I think about it my mouth waters. I plan to serve it with rice , corn tortillas (I have an excellent source) and maybe refried beans, the pickled onions, habañero salsa, with shredded cabbage and sliced radish as garnish.

JudyB, based alone on your wonderful description of Coni's dream.... I'm skipping right to my Gancho tape first!  Thanks so much!

Jarocha, It sounds to me like the TVyNovela awards would be like a "People Magazine" award show. If that is the case, I can't believe that Sylvia N wouldn't have been nominated.  I really don't get it!  Thanks for you explanation of all the Mexican award shows, I'm glad she was nominated for the most prestigious award, the APT. I agree with you on CS, I'm thinking of Mi Picado, what is the scuttlebutt on this on?

My last comment on Sylvia and in the spirit of the Gancho novela/ sports blog, all I can say is "We was robbed!"

Hi Jarocha. Thanks for that info on the awards ceremonies. Everytime you tell us something new, I remember how lucky we are to have you as a source. And oh yes! "orgasmic salvaje" mutterings...I'm sure it gets tiresome fast. Glad I'm just watching and not recapping. And of course, I'm still picking up some new vocabulary so for me, language-learning is still the thing.

Yes, Sandy and Vivi, we wuz robbed!!!! but that's how it goes...Silvia Navarro is so great that I can't wait for her next novela, even if it's a stinker.

Carlos, it's 6:21 pm here, just got back from class and you are making me soooo hungry. Have some vegetarian chili fixed but that TVP doesn't compare to real meat, that's for sure. Sigh. It sucks to be healthy minded.

Carlos, you made me VERY hungry. As usual.

Judy, I believe the Pibil prep is very healthy. If you are a vegetarian you would have to think outside the box because the technique is typically for proteins. Both the chicken and salmon pibil are quite healthy and can be practically fat free depending on what you eat it with. The chicken and salmon were extremely flavorful and could stand alone with rice, quinoa, cous-cous and a simple steamed vegetable or slaw salad dressed with lime juice.

Sylvia..on my next trip to California (like I ever go anywhere but Charlotte...oh well)...anyway, I'm coming to your house for dinner!!!!!!

Any time amiga! And we'll meet up with EJ in the wine country.

Vivi, Sandy and Judy: I do think Silvia was robbed of the nomination, both her and Jaqueline Bracamontes (whom I'm not the biggiest fan of), because both of them were in much more popular novelas and have a greater following than Aracely Arámbula. There's no logic explanation for Arámbula getting the nomination instead of either of them.

I could understand Arámbula getting nominated instead of Laisha Wilkins, who did a much better acting job, because she is more popular and her novela is still on while Gancho has been over for 9 months. Yet, most of the nominations for Corazón Salvaje are dubious.

About Silvia Navarro, the rumor right now is that she will star along Juan Soler in the next novela from the production team of ENDA, called "Odio Amarte". Several programs have been reporting the news for a week but there's no confirmation on her part yet.

Sandy: About Mi Pecado: the pacing at the start is slow so you have to get used to it, especially after the way new novelas are being written. The topics are strong, definitely for a more mature audience. The locations in Chiapas are beautiful, specially the Agua Azul waterfalls. The acting goes from ok to very good, not much stinkers in that one (although I'm not a huge fan of Eugenio Siller but he didn't chew as much scenery here as he did in Guapos). Maité Perroni was a nice surprise since I didn't expect much from her after CCEA. Lucrecia is no Marichuy. Mi Pecado was the favorite novela of tv critics and my personal favorite after Gancho, but I'm not gonna lie, it may not be for everyone. The writers of Mi Pecado wrote Cadenas de Amargura, the original version of ENDA so you know there's gonna be some gut wrenching parts but the feel is completely different from ENDA.
