Gancho 4/1 - Mau marries Coni, Marcos marries Isabel, Moni marries Don Cesar, pasta grows on trees and martians have invaded the earth

#198 Happy April Fool's Day!

Ahoy all, pardon the hasty post, I have a play tonight and must dash. I will fix any errors later tonight. If any of you see a glaring mistake or omission please let me know. Thanks.

Family...it's hard to define family in Gancholandia. Is family defined by blood or by upbringing? Are hermanos de alma any closer than hermanos de sangre? Who's your mama, your daddy, your sister, your kids? These questions are not easy to answer in our little telenovela, are they? Still, they all bear consideration, now and especially in the weeks to come. Let's join our friends as they attempt to find their own definitions of family and self...

As Moni weeps in the gym Estre also tearfully avers that she and Moni's prince never did anything. Please trust her, she swears on her unborn hijo. Too late for lies, says Moni, Estre broke that bond of friendship today. (Romper ese lazo = to break that bond) Great, Moni's on a screaming rant worthy of a four year old (as Mike pointed out), she doesn't want to even be near someone like Estrella!

Coni interrupts Jacqui who is getting a "magic finger" massage by Costi. Hey, those were her words, not mine! I like how Costi pretty much ignores Coni when she's around. Jacqui tells Coni that she's not in the mood for stress so she and Costi retire to the bedroom for some, ahem, relaxation techniques.

Framed by the carved tusks (very savage!) Jero taunts Sal while Aldo watches. Jero asks Aldo why he's pining over some dame like Estrella, they're not worth it. He knows how it feels, Coni's mother, Aldo's grandmother (ha, he can't even say her name) used Jero and threw him in the trash. But she'll regret it, he'll return with a great fortune and stand in front of her and have vengeance. Aldo asks what's Jero going to do about it, is he like his partner? No no no, Jero's not a murderer like Oscar, he has his limits. But he's not saying what he has in store for her. Aldo and Sal share a discreet look.

Rolu jumps back into his chair just before Xime enters, then Arni enters right after her. Rolu accuses her of being out with Arni since they arrived home within seconds of each other. She laughs and says he it was a coincidence and she's tired, goodnighty! She runs upstairs (looking stunning) and Rolu grouses.

Sucks to live in a small neighborhood. Mau waits for Moni outside her vecindad, stands in her way, maintains his innocence and tells her to hit him or kiss him. Guess which she chooses? He slumps to the ground, unconscious. She kneels down crying his name and he smiles, "mi amor". She pushes him away and sez he's not her love, harrumph! Too late little monkey, I think he knows how you still feel about him.

Ultimas semanas!!

Inside the house Moni tells mami why she's so ticked off. Isa milks it for all it's worth...Mau and Estre are complete low-lifes, what they did was unpardonable. Have dignity daughter! Believe it or not Moni tells her to give it a rest. Isa get's all weepy and pathetic, don't take it out on me boo hoo! She hates Mau for Moni's sake. Moni gives her the 411, she will never stop loving Mau. Isabel continues hissing doubts and nastiness into Moni's ears. Moni says she's going to concentrate on her training and doesn't want to think of Mau any more. Isa won't shut it. Moni's had enough of this endless venom and tells her mami she's not into vengeance. Folks, this is is getting old, let's FF>>.

Moni ends by telling Isa that this thing hasn't touched her essence, she's still who she is and "life doesn't end just because of this." Isa does her pale-wan-hands-upon-the-coverlet thing, "sniff sniff, you're right, it doesn't end...for YOU."

Over at Grupo Sermeño (GS) Pau is teaching the new receptionist how to serve cappuchinos to Beto and Marcos and laughing at the tale of Beto's unfortunate antics of the previous night. Beto's put out because the whole company knows he was handcuffed to the park bench in his boxers. Marcos chuckles in pride at the resourcefulness of his daughters. I notice Beto's got darts on his desk. I was wondering what he does in the office all day.

Today at the gym Don Cesar is wearing an attractive green jacket with light yellow shirt to contrast. Very tasteful and understated for him. He tells Moni that Mau is a good guy, he's sure of it. Moni doesn't want to hear it so they discuss her upcoming fight with La Momia. Don Cesar is certain she'll win but Moni's not as confident. She wants to win and reclaim the neighborhood so let's practice!

Marcos is a little tongue-tied because his love for Nieves is serious. Beto cautions him not to take adantage of mom because she has a macho son who will defend her honor. Beto practically blows his capucchino out his nose when Marcos requests his Mom's hand in marriage. Beto puts his feet up on the desk and begins negotiating his mother's dowry (dote). He gives a little squeak of satisfaction and asks how much money is on the table? Marcos looks about as surprised as I have ever seen him.

At Gym Jimmy Coni is training and her hands hurt. She gets so mad she pushes the bag and then comes back swinging when it hits her in the butt. Her trainer rolls his eyes, there is still a lot of work to be done.

Over at Creep Acres Oski and Jero discuss their funds. Oski suggests they remind Coni her time is about up for raising their money. And just in case she hasn't he'll give her a little reminder of what's at stake, i.e. she'll go to jail for murder. Right here my tv went all wonky and I have no idea what they discussed, but I suspect that Oski says something about getting rid of Sal, Lorenza and Aldo just to be safe. (Can anyone help out here?) When Oski leaves Jero says, "No Oski, you're not going to be able to kill anyone, it's you who will end up in jail and I will have it all."

Chris is at GS and Mau thanks him for what he just installed in his office, some sort of security camera hooked up to the computer. Julia, I think your wish has been granted! Chris is ready to start interrogating but Mau just wants his discretion. Chris comments on how Pau looks quite the executive these days and he brings up Tano. Mau tells him to forget Pau, she's interested in Tano and Tano's interested in her. Negativo, sez Chris, no way, just like Mau and Beto he intends to fight for the woman he loves.

Gabi, Xime and Pau gossip about seeing Chris, why is he there? Pau wants to hide and Xime says no problem amiga, she'll keep an eye on the cat and the other on the hook (eyes in the back of her head). Gabi is excited about the upcoming fiesta, it will have lots of millionaires.

Gabi answers the phone, it's Jero and he know where Oscar is, how much will she pay for the info?

Rolu is giving Arni the third degree, last night he and Xime came home at the same time. Just a coincidence sez Arni. Rolu tells him not to hide things. Arni tells his bro he's hallucinating. Oh yeah, well why does Arni let her touch him? Some fraternal pushing ensues and the subject of the letters comes up, some more yelling, and Arni admits he's in love with her. Finally!

Isa shows up at GS and Mau thanks her for coming. OK so this is the set up, cool. The viper says she has come to laugh in his face and gloat that her plan worked perfectly up to the last detail. She tells Mau that she injected both him and Estrella, undressed them, put them in bed and took pictures. Mau asks how could she do that to her daughter? Isa laughs and says why ask what he already knows, that she has hated Valentina since the day she knew she was pregnant. She never wants Monita to be happy because due to her Isabel was never happy either. I don't get the logic but whatever. He offers to cut a deal to prevent Monita from getting hurt. Isa tells him there is no deal possible, since Moni can't give Isa her life back she no longer has any use for her. She leaves, satisfied with her victory. Mau goes directly to his computer and sees that he has captured the entire conversation. I've got you, he says. Let's hope so!

Marcos comes in and Mau tells Marcos that Hissy was back again to gloat but he recorded the whole thing. Marcos is impressed. The big party is tomorrow and he wanted Valentina to be there since GS is part of her inheritence. Mau's all for it because he wants to unmask Isa in front of the whole world and prove she she trapped them. Marcos hopes that Mau can get Moni there and that she will finally accept Marcos as her father.

Get out! Rolu orders his brother to grab his things and leave. Arni's defense is Rolu treats her like crap. "But she's MINE" Rolu insists. Arni's defense, she's not happy with you, you treat her badly, cheat on her. Arni refuses to leave the house or leave Xime alone with Rolu. She deserves better. The gloves are off. Rolu sez he lied to keep her around, Xime changed his life. Arni sez well too bad, she changed mine too and she deserves better than you.

Gabi grabs her purse and runs out of GS. Her gal pals are worried, what was that telephone call about? Pau stresses, she's on her own and Chris is around. Xime teaches her some relaxing exercises. (Heh, Paula almost falls over.) The hot new receptionis joins in. Ohm....

Beto plays darts while Chris pouts that Pau no longer loves him. Beto wants to help and since he's the Director General he can. He offer Chris a temporary gig (chamba temporal) as a security cop. Will Chris accept or not? Acepto!! Chris hugs Beto a little more emphatically than Beto likes but hey, Chris is a man in love.

Xime visits her favorite primis Mau, she's excited about tomorrow's mega party. She's bummed for Mau but she can't believe he would do it with Moni's best friend! Mau tries to tell her that nothing happened. Basically she doesn't believe and describes a variety of scenarios where such a thing could happen and why can't he tell her the circumstances. There is always a logical explanation, say for example they were held up by laser ray guns and ordered to remove their clothes. She babbles on until he finally tells her it was an Isabel trap, she injected them, took off their clothes, put them in bed and took pictures. Poor Xime can't quite wrap her mind around that one, ray guns make more sense, but no matter, she agrees to bring Moni to tomorrow's party.

Back at the gym our little hothead recalls Mau's romantic words from happier times and punches the bag like crazy. I hate you I hate you boo hoo!

Tomorrow: Looks like one of Moni's old flames is in town. Coni also runs into him, literally, and they have some crazy hawt eye contact.

Estar aqui con un ojo al gato y con otro al garabato. = To have eyes in the back of one's head (Lit. An eye kept on the cat, the other eye on the hook, because in olden Mexican kitchens -without refrigerators- they hung the meat on a hook called a "garabato", so they had to keep an eye on the cat and the other on the meat. Also a clever allusion to our telenovela because another word for garabato is, you guessed it, gancho.)

Good one, Amiga, I missed tonight, with tape waiting, I was taken in for a second but not Moni and Don Cesar. The fist two are at least possible though insane. Ha! Thanks for the recap, now IS w iwill go watch it and read in detail later.

Thanks everyone for the hints on how to find the post. It still doesn't show up on my bookmark but I found it on the caray caray home page. Also thanks, Julia for the tvguide sites. They will be useful & are easy to navigate.

Loved the April Fools Day title! Also the analysis of what family means to inhabitants of gancholand.

Arnie & Rolu had me conflicted. Rolu is acting abominably -- but he does love her -- in a sick way. But I still think that Arnie is Xime's soul mate.

Glad to see that Mau has Issy on tape (as wished for last night) Do we believe that Mau will be able to hold on to that incriminating evidence & actually use it?

Moni was terific standing up to Issy and refusing to let her life be ruled by hate & vengeance. Isabel looked not only frustrated but nonplussed by her attitude. Is there any chance that Isabel will actually be softened by this tough little monkey? Could there be redemption even for her????

Or have I fallen victim to April Fools Day thinking?

Güera

Sylvia,

Excellent recap. Your first paragraph reminded me a bit of Hombre's analytical thematic openings. I know you guys have influenced me, maybe we're all influencing one another. In any case this was an on target, witty, absorbing piece of writing. The title is great.

Cheryl,

Don't forget, Mao had thought that Cesar was Moni's amante at one time. He might have bought into the title.

Isn't Coni pretty as a boxer with her hair pulled back in a French braid?

Güera,

I favor Rolu for Ximy:

She labeled him rather prominently as her own.

They were married in the Church.

They have excellent chemistry... and biology

Rolu's method is flawed but his desire is healthy. He tried nice... didn't work. She prefers the grumpy rude Rolu. She has already told him that when he can walk... he walks. He's just doing what works.

I like Arnie, admire his enthusiasm, but I'm pretty certain that she is his first up close and personal experience with ♀. He really needs someone with training wheels. She's a whippet, he's a wheezy cocker spaniel. I doubt that he was even certain whether he is gay or straight until Ximena gave him a point of reference. Don't forget, even Lalu has fallen under Ximy's spell and I think she made him briefly question his preference.

As for Issy finding redemption, I think a duplex is being readied in Hell for her and Oscar as we speak.

Carlos

Oh Güera, I really did try to tag my post earlier just for you, but for some reason blogger kept giving me an error message, gah! Anyway, better late than never.

I think deep in our heart of hearts we would like to see mother and daughter reunited, but I am so sickened by Isabel it's hard to imagine this happening. If Isa can be turned around and we fall for it then it will be a testament to the writing and her acting.

I was so hoping that Sal and Aldo would escape tonight, but the previews indicate that maybe tomorrow will be the night, fingers crossed!

I am conflicted about Rolu and Arni too. At a very basic level I truly do not care for Rolu. I'll leave it at that.

I'm certain that Hombre has influenced me as have you all.

Great title and of course I too loved your opening paragraph. So thoughtful and introducing an excellent theme for discussion, as we say. And thanks for that "gato and garabato" explanation. For some reason I thought "garabato" just meant a "scrawl" so I saw it as just a sort of rhyming saying. Really appreciated the background on that.

The morality play aspect of telenovelas was in full display yesterday. Although the Monita-Mom discussion was a bit long, I'm always happy to see an impassioned defense of forgiveness, love and the rejection of hatred and vengeance.

It was also amusing to see Issy's total bafflement. Up to now, she's manipulated Monita very easily. But she could not nudge her, even temporarily, into Hate. I loved seeing that. Monita may be annoying and tantrum prone, but her moral center is well established and rock solid. She's a champion.

Delighted to see the new man at the gym. Julia will be even happier. He was one of her faves on Cuidado.

And finally, yes, Carlos, Connie looks great in that French braid. I'm sure redemption is now guarenteed.

Your analysis of the Rolu-Arny situation is interesting, hermano. I DO believe Ximy could get Arny up to speed very quickly. She LOVES "projects". (Many women do, you know). Then Rolu could go back to being a man about town, but with a more subtle edge.

Sylvia,

I just reread the recap and found a couple of gems that I missed the first time. - Issy doing her "pale wan hands on the coverlet thing" and "creep acres." Great recap with lots of food for thought.

Sorry Carlos, just as you held out for Coni when we were all down on her I'm a big fan of Arnie. He's already lost his deer in the headlights look. He stood up to Rolu quite forcefully. Of course there is that tattoo. But Rolu is such a ladies man that he'll find a string of Ximenas to impress with that. He has already cheated on Xime. (I understand his excuse ... men have needs and all that ...) Won't he run off for comfort in someone else's arms whenever the marriage hits a rough patch???

Güera

Good morning Judy, Güera, and Sylvia,

Hmmm, looks like Arnie has captured some hearts. Well, I'll have to admit that he has certainly come a ways since he first showed up. I certainly can't argue that Rolu has grown very much. In fact the more confident that Arnie becomes, the more that Rolu deteriorates. Once a confident, swaggering, womanizing race car jockey, he's become a needy, mopey, mewling malingerer. Ximena has a powerful effect on men. Good for Arnie, not so good for Rolu. At our first encounter Ximena seemed like a silly, self indulgent fresa added for broad comedy, yet without altering the original product, the writers have managed to develop one of the most compelling complex fascinating characters ever. As always, I loved her chat with Mao. Those two have a very special chemistry together and though he would never be mistaken for a deep thinker, he certainly is a good judge of character and he clearly adores his cousin.

Carlos

Carlos, that is a good analysis of the Bros Klunder and Xime's character development. Extending the TN has certainly been good for her.

Both those Klunder brothers are projects if you ask me. Arni has a nicer temperament and he can cook so he is still ahead.

I am always thinking about family bonds as I watch this show. A lot of people have adopted or taken care of people that are not blood related. If Paula were watching this she would have doon a flow chart by now.

"Doon" a flowchart...I guess I'm Scottish today. That's what I get for sending out a company-wide bulletin yesterday informing the employees that the weekly organic fruit delivery was replaced by a weekly haggis delivery.

Sylvia,

Replacing the organic fruit with haggis? Great! Speaking of haggis, Susanlynn waltzed by the other day and announced a source of Highlander reruns (Sci Fi Channel) so now after having reduced considerably my TV consumption, I'm now getting a daily dose of Duncan McLeod Tessa and Richie. Thanks a lot, Susanlynn.

The conflict between Rolu and Arnie is disturbing for me. Though I've not payed a lot of attention to this aspect, the various family dynamics are central to this show. Moni, an orphan when the show began, now has recovered both her mom and dad, but it certainly has not improved her life any. On the other hand, gaining a dad has been good (overall) for Aldo and the Femsibs. Your opening paragraph has given me a new perspective on the show. It is all about family... thanks Sylvia.

Carlos

Thanks for the recap Sylvia. Kris, thanks for yesterday's recap. You all do such a fantastic job. Have to dub the Gancho recappers the Fab Five, the Five Ganchoteers. :)

That was just terrible how Hissy was trying to drive Moni to vengeance. Man oh man. Hissy has really destroyed her own life.
Güera, I used to think that Hissy would end up redeemed, but I really have trouble seeing how. I guess mainly since she ran over Coni and Coni lost the baby, just seemed like she lost redemption (in normal TN rules) at that time. Now, just doesn't seem possible. I have to agree with Carlos, for now anyway, get that duplex ready!

Wow, who is this guy? Where has our doofus Mau gone? Whoever this Mau is, he still keeps getting knocked down, but he gets up and has ideas, actual thoughts, that work.. at least for awhile. I hope this will be a good one that will help sink Hissy. I hope it turns out to be her water.. I'm melting, I'm melting.....

I'm glad to see that at least Arnie has announced his love of Xime to Rolu. Good to see that. Get them both thinking. Perhaps Rolu will pull the fast one on us and to a brotherly move at the end and leave Xime for Arnie? About family, right?

Sylvia, thanks for your recap. Somehow I lost yesterday’s Gancho on the tape, so I needed you today. I’m really fond the preambles, gives us food for thought during the day!

It seems like I missed some good stuff, I would have liked to have seen Mau getting Issy’s rantings on the computer. Also, wish I could have seen Arnie’s “love” confession, he is certainly changing for the better.(I’m in his camp as well.) I wish I could have seen Moni being stronger with Issy, that would have been a joy. On the novelas that we have watched lately, no matter what the mother does, she gets a form of redemption/forgivness...I’d be shocked if the same doesn’t happen for Issy.

Judy, regarding the garabato translation, several years ago in my previous job I had the good fortune to work with two ladies from different states of Mexico. I was just starting to watch telenovelas and learn Spanish and they were of invaluable assistance to me, especially as regards dicho and slang translations. Being from different areas of the country they rarely agreed on the exact translations of things, so we usually had amazingly informative (to me) conversations about what a saying meant and how it came to be. We did discuss this exact phrase one time and one of them felt that garabato meant a scribble or a scrawl, and when Xime said the sentence she did make a scribbling motion, however it could also have been a scribble of a hook and I always thought the hook version made more sense. Honestly, I'm not sure what Xime's intent was. By the way, my co-workers also disagreed heartily on how chilaquiles, tamales, albondigas and pozole should be made which made for some amazing potluck dishes. Ahh...I miss those days!

Thanks ya'll for your great comments. I'll be out of the area and out of wireless range for the next couple of days so I'll catch up with you on Hombre's recap. I hope everyone has a good Good Friday, Easter, Spring Break, Passover, whatever.

Great recap, Sylvia. Of course I loved the opening paragraph. We have a number of orphans in this story. Mau adopted three, and he is one himself. Moni thought she was one. But of course, Nieves raised her, and has always been there for her. We have soul brothers, sisters helping each other. ITA agree with your analysis of how important (but confusing) family is to our show.

Your guess as to what Oscar said to Jero (when your transmission went out) was correct (kill em all). So Jero thinks he'll just turn in Oscar (or tell Gabi about him), and thus end up with all the money, thus winning back Jaquelinay. Knowing Jero's track record, I wouldn't be so confident.

Carlos, I appreciate your ideas about Rolu and Arnie. I just think that, no matter how much Rolu says he "loves" Xime, true love can't be based on lies. He continues to lie about the fact that he can walk, and he's intentionally being mean, to maneuver Xime into loving him. This can never work out in the end. But Arnie/Xime? Yes, it's a stretch, but who knows?

You're right, Jeff, our Five Ganchoteers (plus excellent understudy EJ) are the best in the business. Kudos to all of you!!

Loved the title, Sylvia. Too bad pasta doesn't grow on trees. We'd have a grove in the backyard!

Maybe the new man in town - Mona's old boyfriend? - will sweep Ximena right out from under the (feuding) noses of Rolu and Arnie. We thought it was a bit late to be introducing a new character, but he might just spice things up. We already saw Coni eying him in the previews. Estrella and Gabi are likely to make a run at him also, heck, probably Jackie, Nieves.....

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

EDUARDO, MI AMOR!!!!!!!

Did you all hear me shriek with glee last night when he appeared? Between that and Mauricio getting Isabel's confession on record, it was my lucky day. Must be my cosmic reward to make up for that day on ENDA when I had to recap Sammy and Diana playing strip poker.

I hope Mauricio's vast business experience has taught him that when you have a valuable file, you need to immediately copy it to ten different places. We're close enough to the end that his scheme could actually work, right? And isn't it time some of the characters started to achieve their happily ever afters?

I think I'm still team Rolu. Maybe. Unless he goes looking at other ladies again. I'd like to believe that wedding vows do mean something, so Rolu and Arnie aren't starting on even terms. Ximena shouldn't even consider Arnie unless and until things are really definitely finito with Rolu, and to me it seems like they still have something even though they are dysfunctional.

Yes, Jarocha...the site is being super weird. I tried three times to post and got an error page. Evidently one of them actually slipped through though, as I see it's there.

Can the new guy (mi amor!) be Moni's old boyfriend? I thought she'd been with Beto forever 'n' ever until Mauricio came along. Maybe he was just a friend, who will now get other ideas?

What the hey is Cristián's problem? The only thing he has to do to keep Paula is marry her, and if he wants to be with her long term anyway, why not? Why is he making everything so hard?

At the beginning, didn't Cris want to get married, but Pau didn't? Or was it he wanted to move?

Thanks Emilia, how can I forget our Super Rookie Sub, Elna June!! Great job by EJ as well!

And speaking of pasta, Sylvia, were you referring to the Spaghetti tree hoax by the BBC?

Cris wanted Paula to move away to wherever he got that job offer and live with him, but she wouldn't agree unless they got married.

Thanks, Sylvia:

I love your recaps, and this one was a gem.Boy, have I been having trouble with Blogger lately. I THOUGHT I posted something earlier but when I sent it I got the error message and my post disappeared completely.

The biggest surprise yesterday was Sr Lobo. I guess he is Moni's ex? He is a babe and a half. Wow!

On the Xime/Rolu/Arnie front, I find myself in complete agreement with Hombre. It's not OK with me that Rolu has "gone with" women, as Arnie said to his brother yesterday, while his wife has made many overtures toward him. He has had several opportunities to come clean about his lying and he always takes the wrong decision. I am not sure Arnie is really right for her either, but at least he "sees" her for who she is.

I was so happy that Moni stood firm with Hissy. Way to go, Valentina!

Sandy, I always love hearing from you and usually find myself agreeing with you wholeheartedly, but do you really think Isabel can be redeemed? You are such an optimist!

I certainly can't muster up enough optimism to hope Isabel can be redeemed! Sandy, I admire your rosy vision.

I do still have hope for Rolu, though, with or without Ximena (heck, I'll take him myself). If Carlos can champion Coni just because she's pretty, I can give Rolu a Not Guilty By Reason of Aesthetics.

Julia, EJ...no rosy vision here. I personally like Carlos' condo in hell for Isabel. ( I think that is what you said Carlos!) The novela writers are so often kind to these psychotic mothers. Sorti's Elena had a one day prison conversion and was back in MJ's graces and Babs from MEPS got a letter and picture in her cell from Aurora saying she planned to keep her in her life. I am predicting redemption, not suggesting it!

I've had a terrible time posting here for a couple of days too.

Sandy.. I don't think of Babs as being redeemed. If that is the redemption you have in mind for Hissy.. I'm for it. :)

Jeff, I might have the meanings of redemption and forgiveness confused. Somehow the TN mothers have a place in the lives of their daughters after much abuse. So many of them seem criminal and dangerous.

Sandy:

I think that I see what you mean. Despite Elena's criminal behavior, one of the last scenes we saw in Sorti was of Mj and Pedro and Paula visiting her in prison.

It seems like there is no behavior that one of these 'bad mothers' can engage in that makes their daughters truly cut them off forever.

IMHO there are times when the best decision is NOT to be in relationship with one's parents. I don't see how Isabel could be redeemed, myself. Her behavior has been murderous and consistently hateful and destructive to her daughter.

Well, the thing thabout Babss is that she loved her daughter. I do think that had she been able to raise her baby she wouldn't have become the robotic killer that we met. As for Elena, she used her daughters for money, she was obsessed with it and hurt her them for that but that was never her main goal and she felt bad for what she caused.

Isabel doesn't want money. She wants to make Moni miserable because she considers her the reason for her own unhappy life. She is bitter with the world and she is taking it out on her daughter. There's no love lost there.

Jarocha

Sorry, I meant Elena hurt her daughters for money but she felt bad in the end. That was the reason why MJ forgave her (although Paula didn't).

Jarocha

EJ,Jarocha. Do you think that Momi will have Isabel in her life after she learns about her hateful tricks?

I think Moni would be very hurt but she would still want her if she repents. Isabel is the one I have trouble seeing changed and wanting a relationship with Moni.

Jarocha

There is forgiveness, redemption and reconciliaion. But they can all be separate.

You can forgive someone completely but choose not to be in his or her life (therefore NOT reconciliation).

You can forgive and reconcile as when Maria José and Pedro visited Mom in jail and presumeably will continue to do so and to care for her.

There is redemption where the evildoer truly sees the evil of his ways, repents, asks forgiveness...and may or may not receive it. But they have "turned from" their evil doings.

I would like to see Isabel redeemed because I would hate to see anyone persist in this bitter, scalded, hateful...yea, murderous behavior. But right now...it doesn't look good.

JudyB, thanks for your explanation of forgive, reconcile and redemption. As we all know, the novela world is pretend. In the real world psychotic criminals are extremely dangerous. There is a successful company in Kentucky, Appriss (Appriss.com) that developed a system of notifying victims of the whereabouts of the criminals who harmed them. The victims, often family members, are told of parole hearings, movement within the prison system and also when the criminal is release. That gives the victims the opportunity to protect themselves. Often police protection is given to the family, etc. They can leave town, get an order of protection, etc. Evidently the first 24 hours after a prisoner is released is the most dangerous. The concept and company were developed because the government often failed to tell the victims about the status of the criminals, parole hearings were missed, paroles were missed.....

This is a serious topic for a fun novela, but generally I wish they wouldn't take the characters to such a deep level of criminality, then we could all enjoy a wonderful redemption! The writers must think that bad criminals, villains get better ratings.

I guess the point that I am trying to make is that, from what I have heard and read, the vast majority of people are afraid of the criminals, family or not, that have harmed them and go to great lenghts to keep them out of their families and away from their children. If someone feels better by forgiving a criminal, then do it, but as in the case of MJ and Elena, I don't know that I'd welcome her into my life after her prison term is over. The same with Isabel.

The novelas are so exaggerated, it really isn't fair to evaluate them as you would a situation in real life! But sometimes the events get us to thinking and talking about real "stuff" and that is fun...

When she first showed up, I was all set to forgive Issy for abandoning Moni and felt very sympathetic toward her. When she reappeared, I was glad because I wanted to see a happy reunion between her and Moni. Now I'm convinced that this lady is soulless. I'm not sure that she was ever capable of love. I hope during these last episodes that we learn more about the pasts of Nieves, Isabel, and Alicia. Apparently they were friends much like Monita, Estrella, and Paula, though one would never guess that now.

The discussion of family got me to thinking (a dangerous activity, I know). Is there one happy marriage portrayed in this show?

Don Cesar's marriage seemed happy before the extension and they hooked him up with Nieves. He and his wife seemed quite compatible when they were chatting with Monita or fending off the mistaken notion that Cesar and Monita were dating.

That "my wife has gone off and we're separated" really came out of the blue.

Otherwise, can't think of a single one. And in other telenovelas...not many. Lety's parents and Fernando's parents in La Fea were supposedly happily married. A small number!

Well, in many novelas the older people have a nice marriage and all the young ones have troubles. The thing about novelas is that oringinally this stories were conceived as tragedies. Watching a novela was inmersing yourself in a story that presented all the ways a situation could go wrong. When they started using the happy ending and people loved that it became sort of the rule but they kept the same style as before. It is still like watching a tragedy but this time with a happy ending were good beats evil.

The villain is gonna be evil or is gonna turn evil. The only place in novelas were bad guys are not so bad is in novelas made for kids. Maybe some funny novelas will have not so bad villains but at this point people sort of expect that. The 40 year old housewives who have been watching novelas since they were kids expect that. How can you change the formula they have grown accustomed for decades?.

Wow, great discussion. Thank you for the perspective, Jarocha. It is very informative.

Some musings...
In some ways this conversation shows us how engaged we are with the storytelling in our telenovelas. We gringos have gotten connected to the characters and the stories without REALLY understanding the cultural context in which the stories take place. Then we have a hard time when there are mind-bending turn arounds in character behavior. We want verisimilitude, because I think it helps us engage more. We want the characters to feel and act like "real life" in order to engage with them more thoroughly. But in the context within which they were created, in Mexico, the stories make perfect sense because they meet a widely held cultural convention—happy endings.

Thanks again, Jarocha, for your invaluable contributions to this Board. I am delighted and humbled to be a student not just of the Spanish language but also Mexican culture as it plays out in these stories.

Sylvia, oh my, this was absolutely stellar. I went through a gamut of emotions during this journey, beginning with laughter at your hysterical title, to pensively dissecting your thought-provoking question of who constitutes a family, to pure enjoyment of your marvelous recap.

Thank you for the fun-filled, always fascianting recap amiga. As always, exceptionally done!
