Gancho Friday April 9th Pandemonium!

Alternate Title: Sure could go for a nice cup of tea!

Macho bravado. Two men, facing off, hormones raging. Why are they doing it? It has to be for a woman. They taunt each other, they snarl like dogs, they roar like lions, they push, they shove. They parry with words, or they parry with fists. Some try to show the lady how brave they are. Some try to show how tough they are. Some threaten, some joke. But tonight, there’s little joking, as three pairs of rivals face off, desperate to mark their territory, to show the world who’s the real man. And amidst this maelstrom of masculinity, a lone female bares her fangs much more subtly, and with chilling calm, commits an act so vile, so cold, that we want to tear our eyes from the scene, trying to avoid the agony of her actions. But we can’t.

We begin on a gentle note, with Nieves and Cesar in their love nest, he having used his magical skills to transport her to a land of dreams. She thanks him for a wonderful night. He promises her nights, mornings, afternoons. They kiss tenderly, totally at peace.

Jerónimo, however, is falling to pieces! He’s frantic, having been tricked by his Jacquelinay. The money’s gone, and she won’t answer her cell. But maybe he can get money from Gabriela, and leave the country. He calls Gabi, and although she repeats that she won’t pay until Oscar’s behind bars, he screams that he has to flee, because Oscar’ll kill him when he learns he was betrayed. He tells Gabi that Oscar’s in a cabaña in Ajusco. But she already knew that, from the detective. Yeah, well, Oscar has most likely KILLED that detective by now. Gabi KNEW it, that’s why he hadn’t answered or called in. Jerry says there’s only one way she’ll get her information. Gather your money together and bring it to my house NOW, it’s your last chance to trap Oscar, I warn you!

We replay part of Hissabel’s shocking plan to have Moni die in the ring. As Alicia quivers hidden in the corner, shaking in fear and disbelief, Coni is also repelled by the icy chill of Hissy’s venomous words, and refuses to take part, she’s no murderer. Oh, really? says Hissy, and pulls out the staged pictures Oscar and Jerry took which make it look as if Coni killed Salvador, pictures which would send Coni to prison for life. So if Coni won’t do what Hissy says, she’d better keep quiet. Either way, Valentina will have to die.

Over at Grupo Sermeño, Beto is trying (unsuccessfully) to order Paula to get him a cappuccino, when out of the elevator comes a mightily miffed Monita, who purposely smashes into Beto, and demands to see Mau, who’s been “spying” on her. Mau’s not there yet, so Moni will wait in the office.

As we predicted, Hissy now wants the money from Coni, the money owed to Oscar. This blows Coni’s mind, as she gave JERRY the money. This amuses Hissy, and she laughs at Coni’s naivete to trust Jerry, Oscar knew he was a traitor. Hissy recommends Coni get that money somehow, because if Oscar doesn’t get paid, Coni will be rotting in jail long before she gets to fight Valentina in the ring. Coni rushes over to her purse, grabs her cell, and calls her mother. No answer. She hurries out to solve things, and Hissy notices she forgot something from her purse, so she follows. Alicia comes out from her hiding place, what can she do? She has to tell Nieves, Mauricio, Beto, someone. Unfortunately, Hissy’s back before Alicia can take two steps.

Mau arrives at the office and gets a piece of Moni’s mind. How DARE you spy on me. Well, he says, I can’t stand your cavorting with Lobo. Oh yeah, she retorts, if you can sleep with Estrella, I can do whatever I want. After denying (again) he was with Estrella, which Moni doesn’t believe for a minute, he asks Moni to look him in the eyes, does she have a thing for Lobo? She gets right up in his face, says maybe she does, and leaves him fuming.

Alicia nervously says she has to go, she just came for her dirty laundry, but Isabel won’t let her pass. Let’s talk. Alicia doesn’t want to talk, just has some pressing business, but Hissy won’t hear of it. Alicia always LIKES talking. What’s she so nervous about? Let’s have a nice cup of tea. Alicia fumbles, she frets, she says she just remembered she has to turn off Teresa’s frijoles. Cool as steel, Hissy reminds Alicia that Terry hasn’t lived in the neighborhood for days. So what’s your rush? Let’s just have that tea. Alicia is almost weeping with fright, but Hissy has her completely intimidated, and there’s no way Alicia is leaving without that tea.

A bundle of black and red feathers saunters into the neighborhood. It’s Nieves, looking a bit like a wet poodle, but she’s bursting with joy, telling Estrella that her Cesarín is the most wonderful man in the world.

She hands Estre some little thing that looks like a bobby pin (with I had HD), maybe it’s like a pin that Cesar gave her, and tells how Cesar pretended to be a magician, but that’s nothing compared to what happened after! Estre’s happy for her. They gossip a bit, but Nieves has to go make Cesar his favorite snack, romeritos (a green herb like rosemary, served with dried shrimp, potatoes and sauce). Estre gives back the bobby pin (and I realize that’s why Nieves had poodle hair).

Don Cesar is looking particularly sharp in a bright red-orange suit, blue shirt, and gold chain, almost walking on air,

until he sees two cops and a guy in a suit. Turns out he’s under arrest for the suspected kidnapping of Nieves Ochoa. Cesar protests, she’s my woman, my Nievecita, but these guys aren’t listening.

A somewhat weepy Marcos explains to Beto how he’s bringing the full force of the law down against Cesar. Beto admires the ring Marcos bought, and when told it’s 8 carats (kilates), says his jefa weighs a lot more than that. By the way, he’d be happy to deliver it to her, he jokes. Mauricio enters, telling Marcos that Jacqueline left for Italy. Marcos isn’t surprised after she was so embarrassed at the party. Mau thinks not, since she left with Costeño. Anyway, Mau gives Marcos the briefcase full of money, which has now come full circle (Marcos-Coni-Jero-Jacqui-Mau-Marcos). Marcos is dumbfounded. This is the money I gave my daughter for her “acciones” (which can mean both “actions” and “stock shares”). Beto can’t believe Coni would receive this much for her bad actions (hah!). Marcos realizes Jacqui was right, Coni is mixed up in bad business, and has to lose everything before she can see the error of her ways. He offers the money to Mau, who refuses, it would only bring problems and hostility. Beto says HE’D gladly bear problems, hostility, quarrels, punches, whatever if they’d give HIM the money. Mau says he’ll give the money to the Casa Hogar, the group home where his kids were raised. Beto’s not giving up. Remember, he says, I don’t have a Dad. And, umm, my Mom disappeared, so…..

It’s tea time in the lair of the snake, as Hissabel insists that Alicia drink her favorite drink, it’ll calm her down. Alicia says she really has to go out, but Hissy says they can both go out later, let’s just drink our tea first. Alicia gives in, and drinks. Hissy then calmly states “I know you very well, Alicia. I know why you’re upset. What happened was that you heard the conversation I had with Constanza a few minutes ago, right?” Alicia frowns, keeps drinking.

Jero arrives at his/Ximena’s place to pack his bags. Xime tells him someone is waiting for him. It’s Coni, who wants her money back. Now. Sorry, says Jerry, your lustful mother skipped the country with that pumped up black guy (prieto inflada), taking all the money. What!!?? shrieks Coni.

Mau asks Beto if Moni used to have a thing for Lobo, years ago. Beto says yes, in fact, if Lobo hadn’t gotten married, Moni might have married him, and they’d have a bunch of kids by now. But Beto also thinks Lobo plays the field, likes a bunch of ladies. Fortunately, his Constancia is faithful. Mau is starting to turn a bit green at this point.

Why, Isabel, why? cries Alicia. Why such evil? What runs through your veins? How could you want to end the life of your own child? Hissy tells her, It’s been so easy to play with you, Alicia. You chose to believe in me blindly, I guess for the affection you felt for me. And you know what, I could never stand you, you don’t know how much I hated how you could never shut up, you talked and talked without stopping, didn’t you get fed up with yourself? (Alicia starts gasping for breath). And you know what I thought when I couldn’t shut your mouth? I’d never find a way to quiet you once and for all. But guess what - I found the way, look (she picks up the vial Oscar gave her), with this poison I’m going to kill Valentina the day of her match, but I needed to test how effective it was. (Alicia cries no, no, Isabel,

then sinks backwards onto the bed, DEAD!). Isabel smiles. You see, it wasn’t that hard. Finally, I can be together with you in silence.

(Sadly, it appears that our Aliblaba will no more habla).

Over at Gym Jimmy, Lobo wonders why Coni’s late. Enter Mauricio, telling Lobo to stay away from La Monita. Lobo wants MAU to stay away from her. After Lobo calls Mau an imbecile and a pig, the macho pushing starts. Jimmy tries to separate them as they call each other cowards. Lobo says Mau just loves to use his money, and abuse poor women. Mau is really mad now, and Jimmy says if you guys want to fight, put on gloves, and get in the ring. They both have no objection to this.

Back in Moni’s apartment, Hissy cleans up the evidence, removes the cups, scatters laundry on the body, making it look like a heart attack. She takes her bag with the red envelope containing the damning pictures of Coni, and exits, quite pleased with herself.

Coni, though, is not so pleased. Her Mom isn’t answering the phone. Jerry says she left the country, it’s too late. Xime tries to be helpful, but they both yell, SHUT UP! Coni’s worried that Oscar will send her to jail, Jerry’s worried that Oscar will kill him (why don’t they join forces?) Jero says he’s leaving, but Coni isn’t taking that route. Xime interrupts. Coni, you said you could end up in jail. Does that mean it’s now a crime to be promiscuous and easy? Coni stalks out in a rage. Xime tries her luck with Jero, wondering when he’ll die, since the other day, she saw a cute black dress which looked so stunning, she’d really like to wear it, and….Jero’s not amused, and goes upstairs to pack.

Beefcake alert! Mau and Lobo are now shirtless, putting on the boxing gloves. Jimmy cautions Mau not to do it, Lobo’s a pro, he’ll tear you to pieces. Mau won’t back down. The two fighters circle each other, eyeing each other warily (where have I heard that before?) Enter Estrella, don’t do it! Mau tells her to leave, it’s none of her business. She rushes out to get help. Jimmy says let’s have a fair fight, okay, box!

I’m innocent! yells Don Cesar from behind prison bars. (almost forgot about him) He has a visitor, though, smiling, smug, Marcos, as we get ready for macho confrontation No. 2. No one looks me in the face without batting an eyelash (se queda tan campante), says Marcos. Where’d you take Nieves? To the moon and the stars, is the reply. Marcos tells him to watch his words, he’s talking about his future wife. Cesar begs to differ, she won’t marry you. Oh really, says Marcos, you think Nieves would prefer you over ME (motioning at how handsome he is). Look in the mirror, wire head. There’s a big difference between us. Yeah, says Cesar, I’m handsome, you’re decrepit (carcamán). Marcos gets right in his face, don’t mess with MY Nieves. Oh really? retorts Cesar, haven’t you heard that what belongs to Cesar, is Cesar’s? Marcos gets an evil grin, makes a threatening motion with his fist, and tells Cesar he’s a magician, too, and he’ll make Cesar “disappear” from the life of his future wife. He makes his hand in the shape of a gun, “shoots” Cesar, and laughs. (I fear Marcos is slipping a bit over to the dark side.)

Moni’s doing her workout when Estrella rushes in to tell her about the excess testosterone levels over in Gym Jimmy. Moni rips off her practice gloves and runs out, an out of breath (and pregnant, and wearing little flats, unlike Moni’s sneakers) Estrella following as fast as she can.

Ximena has lit some incense and is chanting Ommmmm. She explains to Rolu that she’s trying to get rid of the bad energy Coni left. What’s the matter? asks Rolu. She sits in his lap, explains she’s super worried because Jerry’s going to die really soon. And if he dies, there’ll be a big void in this house. His bedroom, of course. I just can’t decide whether to put in a gym, a mini-spa, a tanning salon, or a super dressing room, what am I to do? Arnie enters, and manages a cheek kiss with Xime. Rolu says Xime can have her gym AND her super dressing room, because isn’t it about time Arnie left? From the background, we hear Jerry say it’s time for ME to leave, so enjoy me, touch me, it’s your last time. The doorbell rings, and it’s Gabi. Jerry figures she brought the money, right? Nope, she brought something else. Boys? Two cops enter, and Jerónimo is under arrest. Gabi tells him the jig is up, he might as well tell them where Oscar is.

The wolf and the sheepdog are displaying their chiseled chests, as Lobo gives Mau a little pep talk, focus, center yourself. Mau doesn’t want any help, and unleashes a quick left to Lobo’s jaw, drawing blood. Big mistake. Lobo starts pummeling Mau with an endless barrage of heavy hits, when in bursts Monita, just in time. She bounds into the ring, imploring Lobo to stop hitting him, quickly jumps in between the boxers, just as Lobo uncorks a vicious right cross, intended for Mau, and catches Moni square in the jaw! She swoons and collapses face down onto the canvas. Our beefcake boys are a bit befuddled.

You KILLED her, cries Estrella.

You’re not taking me anywhere! screams Jerry to the cops, grabbing a designer chair for protection. The suited cop explains it’d be better if Jerry comes with them to answer some questions. Jerry says he’s innocent, it was all Oscar. Tell it to the judge, replies suit guy. Xime has her three things, though. Uno, my hermanolfo, half hermano (brother), half golfo (good for nothing bum), isn’t such a bad guy, except when he grabs my neck and chokes me, but anyway, Dos, if you want to get info out of him, try this little pillow (grabs a cushion (cojín) we’ve seen before), it’s a technique with which he’s very…Shut up, Ximena, that’s just between us, you traitor! I’m just trying to defend you, she replies, causing him to call her taradúpida (combination of tarada and estúpida (both of which mean dummy), causing both Rolu and Arnie to leap to her defense (our third pair of machos?) Gabi tells Jerry to cut the crap, we all know you’re Oscar’s accomplice. Right, says Xime, he’s your “mentor”, you guys are like the Yin and Yang of evil (she still holding a stick of incense). Jerry makes a break for the door, grabbing Ximena as a hostage! The cops pull their guns, and it’s another Mexican standoff.

Our boxing bruisers gingerly turn over the unconscious Moni, Estrella also in the ring, as the three crouch over her, fanning her, looking for a reaction. Sure enough, Moni pops up as if she were in her own match, goes into her stance, ready to take on BOTH the guys, bring it on! She's furious with them. She orders Mau to stop this, he’s no fighter. Mau’s not afraid, and besides, La Momia isn’t a fighter either. But did you know this imbecile is training her? Sure, replies Moni, it was my idea, so you, Mauricio had better train, too, before fighting El Lobo. Fine, says Mau, train me, when can we start? Forget it, get out of here, hit the road! (lárgate de aquí, ahuecando el ala). Estrella begs her not to be so harsh, but Moni says she’s already saved the life of Estre’s loverboy (amorcito), so CAN it! Estre screams back she’s told Moni a thousand times she doesn’t love Mauricio. Oh, so it’s just sex, then. After a bit more yelling, Moni walks away with Lobo, leaving Mau and Estrella frazzled, fizzled, forlorn and forsaken.

Alone with Lobo, Moni reams him out for fighting Mau, he could have really hurt him! Ah, you still love him, don’t you? Yes, as mad as she is at him, she still has feelings for Mau, admits Moni. Lobo says he wanted to give Mau a thrashing (una paliza), because he deserved it, but she’s right, he could have really hurt the guy. Well, then promise me you won’t fight him again. He won’t promise, because this idiot keeps bothering you, he’d better prepare himself, no one should be allowed to make fun of you. He gently touches her cheek with his boxing glove, and she smiles.

Put down your weapons! demands Jerry of the cops. Arnie says don’t shoot, and Xime agrees, she’s young, and beautiful, right? Jerry makes for the door, when Rolu STANDS UP, lunges out of his chair, and starts pulling Jerry off of Ximena. Jerry stops fighting, this is interesting. Xime’s happy her Rolu defended her. Grab him, yells Gabi, but Jerry punches Rolu, who crashes to the floor, and snatches his sister again, ordering Arnie to open the door. Arnie refuses. Jerry says you’d better if you don’t want to be cleaning Ximena’s brains (sesos) off the floor when these guys fire their guns. Not my brains! pleads Xime. Arnie opens the door, Jerry drags Ximena out, and Arnie and the others run after them. The cops trip over each other, as Rolu rushes ahead. Xime grabs a railing, you never take me anywhere brother, why now? Rolu and Arnie yell to let her go! Jerry throws Xime into Arnie’s shocked arms, and bolts. Xime calls Arnie her hero, as Rolu launches himself OVER THE RAILING, crashing down on top of Jerry, twenty feet below, as both their heads CRACK against the pavement!!!!

There’s blood, and Xime bemoans that she might be a widow and without her hermanolfo, at the same time!

Coni, desperate to get out of her jam, has sought out the only other person who could help, her Daddy. She tearfully tells him that Mom went to Italy, and she took all that money! She needs him to get that money back, but Marcos won’t, it’s time for Coni to take responsibility for her mistakes. He agrees that what her Mom did was bad, but you, daughter, also obtained that money through dirty dealings, blackmailing and tricking Mauricio. Forgive me, daughter, but you deserve what happened to you.

Cut to someone who did NOT deserve it, Alicia, lying lifeless on Moni’s bed, as Nieves calls to Moni from outside. She comes in, sees Alicia, gets increasingly distraught as there’s no response.

Coni begs her Dad, I’ll sell the house, can’t you just give me a loan? Marcos is firm, she had to lose everything to learn her lesson, to give up her hate and desire for vengeance. She sinks to her knees, implores him, she really needs to pay a debt, the situation is very, very serious, please, Daddy, please! Marcos takes a deep breath, points a stern fatherly finger at her. Tell me to my face, you’ll change, you’ll return the ownership of the vecindad, you’ll cancel the fight with Valentina. Coni jumps up, I can’t do that Dad, I just won’t! In that case, daughter, there’s nothing I can do for you.

The heavy burden of this fatherly admonishment is writ large on Coni’s face,

her mind whirling with conflicting emotions, and our episode ends.

Previews: I’m not even going to tell you, let’s just say the shocks continue, with lies, love, threats, and desire. It’s últimos capítulos!

Oh, Hombre:
Wonderful recap. I was so sad when Isabel killed Alicia. Vile, vile, viper. But your commentary was so snarkily delicious, "Sadly, it appears that our Aliblaba will no more habla," that I laughed out loud. Brilliant. I can't say I'll miss Alicia but she was always sweet, loyal and kind, qualities we are not seeing a lot of our favorites demonstrate right now.

Even though Rolu has taken to base jumping from balconies without a parachute as a pastime, I don't find him redeemed just because he hit yet another stone floor with a crack. His MO is to lie and cheat, one more broken up body is not enough payment for me for him to be with our darling ditzy Ximena.

This paragraph is great, Hombre:

"Beefcake alert! Jimmy says let’s have a fair fight, okay, box!" Wow, you really captured the feeling of the scene, which I found to be very tense indeed.

You also nailed Marcos. Like most control freaks, he is charming when He feels powerful and edgy-nasty when he feels threatened. He will not get Nieves, for sure. As we mentioned yesterday, who is left for Marcos? I think he may be headed the way of Jacqui and Tano, out of the story with no girlfriend, unless he wants to booby prize—Isabel!

Thanks, again for all your work and care in your recaps. They are always terrific.

EJ

Cap'n:

If you check in, take a look at CS' comments today. You will be surprised, sailor that you are, that Juan del Diablo (or the 'Fat Pirate' as hubby names him) can sail from Veracruz to Havana (minimum 985 nautical miles) in one day. I suggested over there that you might want to consult his marine architect before undertaking your next sailing race. Big grin.

I know, Juan is not really fat, it's just that the puffy pirate shirt adds unfortunate pounds around his middle.

EJ

Wow. Another dazzler Hombre. And an especial thanks for the photos this time since they included our oh so fine shirtless boxers. I'm sure Julia will be sending her heartfelt thanks as well. Lobo really has a well-defined six-pack.

Your opening paragraph was fun...VERY DRAMATIC and "malestrom of masculinity" just set me off laughing. Likewise for "frazzled, fizzled, forlorn and forsaken." You were having fun with this, weren't you?

Muchas gracias also for "prieto inflado" and "carcamán". I seem to remember Beto calling Marcos un viejo carcamán in the past and I could never find it in my dictionary. Just tried to figure it out from context.

In short..great writing, fab pictures and helpful vocabulary. The perfect recap. Gracias.

PS Is Alicia really dead?! I know we've had several peripheral characters killed off...the Gabriela swindler, the lawyer and the portly pudgy PI, but Alicia!?...one of the vecindad!? No puede ser!!!! Hope they can revive her. Don't like the way this is going.

PPS I think my favorite picture though is of Don Cesar. Wow. He looks great in that pose. Sure hope they let him keep the wardrobe after this show is over. He'll be beating them off with a club.

I just realized it probably should have been Aliblabla, but I'll leave it as is, I think y'all got the idea. And Judy, I don't think she'll be revived.

On the other hand, I don't think either Rolu or Jerry is dead, but we may be talking comas again.

They're making it very difficult for our heroes. Mau makes a recording of Hissy, it gets erased. Alicia overhears her, SHE gets "erased". Jero is cornered, we KNOW Gabi'll find out where Oscar is, and now Jero's out of commission, before he can say a word.

But no more filler, things are really happening now, with every episode packed with excitement.

Also, this seems to confirm that Isabel is beyond redemption. Despite her vile actions and statements, there was still a teeny bit of doubt with her, but no more.

This was a very tough episode, and I noticed that none of the child actors appeared in it at all.

Even Ximena's humor was black humor.

And I'm so mad at Moni for the vicious kind of insults she keeps saying to her former best amiga (who continues to be supportive despite these insults).

NO!!! Murder Aliblabla?!?!? No puede ser! I hated those scenes, fingers in ears singing la la la la la. However your final statement in that sentence made me giggle uncontrollably (Aliblabla will no longer habla.)

Wow, Gabi brought the cops. That's about the smartest and most sensible thing that anybody has ever done in this telenovela. I loved the looks on everyone's faces when Rolu jumped up. He's not my fave but I certainly hope he survived his leap.

Hombre, your pics were fantastic today. Fully realizing I am a shallow, chauvinist she-pig (sow sounded too horrible), my fave was the shirtless hunks looking befuddled. Ooh la la. Their scenes had such wonderfully choreographed boxing and top-notch acting that I had to rewind.

Marcos, I'm afraid imagination and true love have surpassed money and tasteful attire. Don Cesar is now ahead in the race to Nieves' heart.

I noticed they censored out "prieto" when aired on TV. I wonder if it considered to be not quite PC? Interesting.

Thanks again Hombre. What a treat, two Hombre recaps in one week. I agree that this was a dark episode, possibly the darkest so far what with Ali's poisoning. I also agree that Moni is being horrible to her friend. Some people insist on learning lessons the hard way. I fear she is one of them.

EJ, thanks for the heads up about CS. I am days behind on that one but I will head on over and take a peek.

To borrow from Monty Python, I still can't believe that Alicia is stone dead, deceased, demised, past done, stiff, no more, ceased to be, expired, late, stiff, bereft of life, met her Maker, and joined the Choir Invisible. I hold out hope that she can be revived!!!! (color me hopelessly optimistic)

Yeah, what she said.

Save Sal! Save Aldo! Revive Alicia!

Hombre, I’m a big fan or your preambles, and this was another winner. The best sentence: “And amidst this maelstrom of masculinity, a lone female bares her fangs much more subtly, and with chilling calm, commits an act so vile, so cold, that we want to tear our eyes from the scene, trying to avoid the agony of her actions. But we can’t.” So very well said Hombre. We are helpless armchair viewers of (in my opinion) one of the worst novela villains of all time.....Hissabel. She’s not even close to Elena of Sorti, who was horrible. Is Alicia really dead or was it a wrong dose of poison and she’ll escape with a bad headache and a dry mouth? We’ll have to wait for Monday to see.

Wish more of our cuddly characters were like Gabi, grass don’t grow under her feet...she preemptively calls the police to have Jerry arrested. The Mexican police are better than ours, when called, they let the womenfolk have a few minutes to vent their feelings to the perps and even let them take control of the situation, I like that. In the few “run-ins” I have with the police it is more like...”SHUT UP AND GO BACK TO THE SIDEWALK” (My hubby and I tried to defend our cabby to the Chicago police once, plus a fire cracker incident with my son and his friends!) Gabi was holding court, I loved it. Even though Rolu looks injured, I’m not moved, I’m still solidly in Arni’s court.

Moni is the most stubborn person on the planet....If I’ve had one takeaway from this novela it is.....LISTEN!

Thanks for a great recap Hombre.

Mau, Mau, you don't tug on superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, and you don't pick a fight with a world champion. Just when we think he is getting smarter. :)

Is Aliblabla gone? I'm hoping that the avances are teasing us and Nieves will tell Hissy that Ali isn't dead yet. Any chance? :)

Free Cesar! Free Sal! Free Aldo!

"frazzled, fizzled, forlorn and forsaken."

Not sure why Rolu even decided to go after Jero. He had Xime, so need to really go after him, leave it to the police. Liked how he yelled Jeronimo as he leaped over the railing. Are they gone? At least I imagine Jero will be out for awhile and unable to answer questions. Or is Rolu gone? Are they going to default Xime to Arnie be getting rid of Rolu?

Hombre, agree, if Ali is dead, just no redemption for Hissy. Going to far, in general hasn't been killing, now assesina.

Sylvia, "singing la la la la la" and yes, Gabi was smart. Too bad the cops weren't smart enough. :)
I think the one time they blanked out prieto, but later they did not. I guess the first time referred to a person, so as you say probably PC thing.

Judy, I hope too that Ali isn't completely gone. Maybe Nieves can pull a Monty Python and say that the parrot, er.. Alicia, is still alive. :)

Sylvia, I confirmed that they censored "prieto". I hadn't really heard it, just got it from the captions. I checked on wordreference.com, and in some countries, it can be taken as an insult, whereas in others, it's perfectly fine. This just means it'll join the words that I'll remember in case I hear them, but probably would be wise to avoid using.

Hombre- I have not yet seen any of this past week's episodes, nor read any of the recaps, except this one. Wow! A lot has happens. I will spend all tomorrow watching and catching up. I just had to share how hard I laughed when I got to this line: "Sadly, it appears that our Aliblaba will no more habla." I know that's really twisted, but I could not help it. :)

But, I do not want Rolu to be dead. Your recap makes it sound like he's a goner though. Could it be?

Can't wait to actually see the shows and read the recaps and comments.

Vivi, here's my prediction as to Rolu and Jero. Both in full body casts, unable to talk for a few months, and Xime and Arnie will have to care for both of them. Of course, I'm usually 100% wrong.

Hombre,

Wow, two recaps in the same week and both with the incomparable Hombre wit, style, and eye for detail. Pandemonium is certainly the correct description for this episode and you certainly vividly captured the frenetic pace.

I was stunned that the writers killed off our gentle Alicia; the bastards! Would it have hurt us to listen to her incessant inane, painful prattle for just four more weeks? Hmmm... then again... on second thought...

Rolu is my new hero. He certainly lost points with his cavorting with other ladies, but clearly he loves and adores our Ximy and without thinking has risked his life in her defense. Yes indeed, Ernie is cute and clever but Rolundo and Ximena are destiny's children. It is written... boldly on his back and chest, and discretely on Ximy's shoulder.
His soaring abilities are legendary and hilarious. No matter how many dives he makes, I laugh. His leaps and falls from great heights have become almost traditional at this point..

Judy, I'm afraid that unfortunately you have nailed Alicia's fate accurately with your allusion to Monty Python. Our Alicia is no doubt indeed sadly... an ex-parrot.

I feel exactly the same disdain for Mao facing Lobo in the ring as I do for Moni facing Coni. The inequity of abilities is simply too great. I understand the desire of some of us to view them topless, but mud wrestling would be far more appropriate for both pairings.

Nieves with her hair unleashed and damp... be still my aged heart.

Sandy, think how much time could have been saved and how much suffering could have been spared in every TN we have watched had the protagonists simply heeded the advice, "Shut up and listen." Probably in real life as well.

Carlos

Howday, everyone, sorry to have been gone so long. Thanks, Hombre, Sylvia, Kris, Judy, Carlos! Y'all are the best.

- Monita: stale. Her rants & tantrums are now wearying.

- Mauricio: get a haircut if you want to box w/ people. And, OBTW, cut your losses and quit sniffing around Monita. And again, OBTW, the next time you want to give a presentation, pre-flight your media and make sure it works.

- Lobo: run before Monita catches you.

- Gabriela & Salvador: the only couple on this show mature enough to have a successful marriage.

- Nieves: yep, Carlos, the loose fluffed hair was rather fetching.

- Costeno: twenty years from now, pen your memoirs.

Not wishing to be accused of channeling poor Alicia, I'll quit now.

OT question: is snyone else here involved in eldercare?

Wish I could help, Mike, but my parents passed away in '92 and 2000. Difficult decisions have to be made and the balance shifts are unconfortable. The parent wants to be the one to call the shots and yet the grown child now has to. Tough for both of you. I wish you well and know your mother is very lucky to have a son like you concerned with her well-being.

Mike:

Yes, on the eldercare question. My husband's parent's have now passed (Alheizermer;s and Cancer) and mine are failing—both in wheelchairs. Unfortunately my parents, against the will of their children, decided in their late 60's to move 500 miles from their nearest child (me) to an isolated (read, no airport) but beautiful oceanfront community.

Now, as they are each in failing health, at least once a month (plus whatever hospital visits may occur) one of us makes the 1000 mile round trip drive to get things ready for the next month. The WILL NOT leave the house.

Gee, Mike, that is probably more than you wanted to know. I love my parents, but between the care issues, meds questions, doctor's visits and conference calls, as well as work on the upkeep of the house it is really hard work.

EJ

EJ, no, that's not "TMI" at all. The current Atlantic Monthly has an interesting article on the topic. And it confirmed my suspicion that there are a lot of us involved. My doc has that going on w/ his own mother so he and I spend some time every time I see him comparing notes. Likewise a guy I worked with. He and I are going to get together for lunch Tuesday for a good vent.

You're welcome to send me a note at Nav130 at gmail dot com if you like. Mutual support can be helpful.

Mike, you've given me an idea. I've been wondering how we can keep continuing the marvelous conversations we've all had on the Gancho land once we're "unemployed".

Maybe we should just put up a Gancho topic line once a week (a little like Hombre did on the days he didn't have a show to recap) so we can all stay in touch with each other as a group.

"Stuff" happens and this group has been balm to my heart on many an occasion.

Hombre: Your finest recap to date. You handled the gamut of events perfectly - you illustrated every scene, sharing these tumultuous events perfectly.

Agree with Judy that "maelstrom of masculinity" and "frazzled, fizzled, forlorn and forsaken" were great fun. The pictures were wonderful - hard to pick a favorite but Coni's was probably it for me.

I can't believe Ali is dead. Jeff, you were right! Such a lovely, gentle soul whose only crime was a steady stream of chatter. Ack.

I'll join Sylvia's battle cry "Save Sal! Save Aldo! Revive Alicia!"

On a personal note, I wanted to let everyone know that after months of grueling chemo, my brother's lung cancer is now in remission. Thank you for your prayers and kind comments. I am very happy and extremely grateful for your support.

Diana

Judy, that's a great idea to post a topic line!

As a devoted Ganchoite, I can't imagine not "hearing" from this wonderful little group. I'm in denial the show is coming to an end. Reading these recaps and comments has been the highlight of my day.

Diana

Oh Diana, that is great, wonderful, uplifting news about your brother. Every time we didn't hear from you for a couple of days we would all worry about him and you. I realize you knew this which is why you gave us a heads up when you had to be incommunicado. Thank you so much for the update. I woke up kind of cranky from lack of sleep but now I feel revived and happy. Hooray!!!

Sylvia, thank you for your kind and caring words amiga. Truly a joyous day! Diana

Diana,

What wonderful news! I am so happy to hear this news about your brother. I have thought about you often and worry about you and him when you miss a few days commenting. I'm so glad that you shared this good news with us.

Mike, my heart goes out to you. Linda's mom is disabled and depends on Linda to take her places, but fortunately her mind is sound. She's just a bit demanding at times, but we're glad that she's still around.
I have a number of elderly patients, most of whom enjoy reasonably good health and active lives. I have one patient who has significant loss of her mental facilities and no family at all. Fortunately she has a friend who helps out and that friend and we here at our office have become something of a surrogate family for her.

Carlos

Diana, that's great news about your brother.

And Judy, a fine idea for a Gancho post area when the show ends.

They really did say últimos capítulos, not just últimas semanas, and I figure there's only about 3 weeks left. They may have the gran final on April 30th (it would have to be a 2 hour special, I think). Does anyone have schedules that go that far ahead?

Thank you Carlos. I appreciate your thoughtful sentiments. I am overjoyed...

Mike, I wish I had some advice or experience to pass along to you in terms of eldercare but both of my parents passed away. I will keep you in my thoughts and am glad to see that you have friends to share with (in addition to the perfect partner)- that definitely helps.

Diana

Hi Diana. Sent you an e-mail but lately some of my emails have gone missing (on my Hotmail account anyway) so also wanted to tell you here how happy I am for you and Brian.

It is an absolutely glorious day in Ohio, the trees are in bloom like pink and white brides, the breezes are balmy, the sky a soft blue...and your wonderful news makes it that much better.

Thanks for sharing the joy and hope with us, amiga. That's why I love this line and this special gathering of friends.

Diana, Emilia and I are delighted about your brother! Prayers continue for you both.

And, yes, Judy, if you'd put up a Gancho open thread once a week or so that would be too cool.

Carlos, God bless you and your office staff for looking after the lady with no family. I'm sure that means the world to her.

Heading down to mother's here shortly to meet the new home health aide and get that started. Hope this one works out!

Judy, so glad to hear spring has arrived in Ohio! You paid your dues last winter, as did Hombre and Vivi.

Esposa is on the road now coming home from a marathon gum-beatin' with her best girlfriend in NC.

Thanks for your support Hombre, Mike and Emilia. I am so grateful.

Judy, I couldn't wait to e-mail you when I got in this morning. Your kind and generous support has and continues to be immeasurable.

Mike, "marathon gum-beatin'". LOL. I will have to remember that.

It's a beautiful day here too - matches my hopes and spirits.

Diana

Great recap Hombre! You had an action packed episode and your writing kept me entranced remembering everything that happened. I loved your comments and yes I also chuckled at the Aliblaba line.

I felt for Coni but her father was offering to help her at the end of the episode and she couldn't let her anger go.

I loved when Rolu got up from his wheelchair to help Xime. I love Xime and Rolu together and I'm rooting for him to finally become a complete decent man so they can be together and I'm glad that lie is out of the way.

Diana, I'm so glad your brother is in remission. Thank you for sharing the news with us. I'm sending you a hug from here.

Jarocha

Diana:

I could not be happier for you. It is such a joy to have remission occur. Congratulations to you and your brother.

Being a caregiver is an intimate, difficult and life changing task. As it sounds like you and your brother are very close, it can also hold a quality of great beauty. Congratulations on your decision to enrich your life in this way. May both you and your brother be richly blessed by the journey and may he remain in healthy remission forever.

In loving regards and with prayers for each of you,

EJ

Thank you Jarocha and Elna June. The support and kindness of the recappers and commenters here is a joy and a blessing.

Diana

Yes, please, to the ongoing connection as a group. Sometimes in life a disparate group of people comes together who co-create that magic quality of "true" family. I have experienced this on a one month trek in Nepal; with a group of co-workers who were all ex-pats while working in Eurpoe; with a cohort of fellow practitioners in my sangha (church or temple); and now I am having that experience with you all here at Gancho.

We are of different faiths, geographic locales, interests, and ages, and yet each of you recappers and regular commenters feels like a treasured friend. I find myself looking at sometthing (Ohio basketball memorabilia on e-Bay) and thinking, "Oh, JudyB. would like that!" I then realize that I don't know JudyB's "real" name (and I CERTAINLY would not want her to post it on a public forum!) or how to send her anything but kind thoughts. How has this happened, dear friends?

I had such a great experience meeting and keeping in touch with Novelera that I wonder how we could meet in real life...

I am such a private person that I cannot believe that I posted last night about my experience with my parents. Wow! We have really created a space here with a lot of trust.

EJ

Jarocha and Elna June, thank you for your kind, caring compassion.

I'm so blessed to be part of this wonderful group. You uplift me daily.

Diana

Mike:

Best of luck with the new home health aide. May he/she be a perfect fir fofr your Mom.

EJ

Mike and Emilia:

That last sentence should say..."A perfect FIT for your Mom". How my fingers fail me...

EJ

Hmmm...I think Blogger ate my comment from Saturday...

but anyway, it was full of LAVISH praise for the wild and witty recap. Of course I cannot thank you enough for the photo, Hombre. Our dear dim Labrador was outclassed all around.

Ximena's troupe is just the funniest. Loved her bringing up the strangling and suffocating to the cops. Rolu was a heroic idiot but at least his lie is over and he had the presence of mind to be funny and yell "Jeronimo!!!"

Diana, that is super wonderful news about your brother. I'm so glad to hear it!

Mike I whish your mom the best. I have older grandmothers and older great aunts and I know how much they need to feel safe. My great aunt in my mother's side has just been diagnosed with senile dementia, she never married nor had children so all the family is trying to help her to be comfortable in a new apartment, although it took a little time for her to be able to feel secure in her new space. I wish you all the luck in the world with this new health aide.

Jarocha

I'm already suffering from pre-withdrawal. Is that a thing? Anxiety knowing your drug of choice will soon be cut off? Gancho has been the most fun telenovela I've ever seen and I'm really going to miss these discussions, so I agree...let's keep the discussions going!

Is it possible the recappers might take up one of the new afternoon telenovelas? Does anyone know whether the replacement shows will be worth watching?

I've just started watching Amar Sin Límites again. They're showing it at 1 a.m. now. You may be thinking, "wasn't the first time bad enough?" but I think it's actually way better the second time around. I already know the stupid plot turns so I can just focus on the characters and appreciate that I can actually understand the dialogue now. When ASL was originally on I could pick out about four words per episode.

Plus...loads of good-looking men, including our Lobo.

Marcos should have INSISTED that Mauricio take a little of that cash and spend it on a haircut. That mane is getting out of control.

Julia: I never watched Amar Sin Limites for some reason. I do fancy Valentino Lanus and I usually like Karyme Lozano but it never called my attention. I do remember the scene where El Lobo got married to his boyfriend, that was nice and both characteres were different from the typical way gay characteres are written in novelas. The only other novela that had done something simmilar was Tres Mujeres.

ASL was produced by Angelli Nesma, the producer of Gancho, and it didn’t have the success it needed so Nesma hasn’t made a dramatic novela since then. The one dramatic one I loved from her was "Por Un Beso", it was a great novela with Natalia Esperon (Luz from ENDA) and Victor Noriega (Marco in Dinero). The first part was in the 70’s with Esperon playing her character’s mother part and the production was very nice. They even got Gloria Stefan to sing the song for the credits.

Jarocha

I'm surprised ASL didn't do better. I know we liked to make fun of things like the amnesia plotline and how annoying Karyme's character Azul was, but there were a lot of compelling aspects of the show. I, too, liked portrayal of the gay characters. They weren't stereotypes.

It was nowhere near the train wreck FELS was, that is for sure.

Diana- I just got home from my last day of jury duty after a long week (yay!), to read your fantastic news about your brother. How uplifting. All the best to your brother and to you and your family. I will continue to send good thoughts and good vibes your way. :)

By the way, we had a hung jury, but sometimes you just can't come to agreement on what "reasonable doubt" means. Some of these folks should start watching telenovelas and their minds will open up to a whole new level of possible crime scenarios! ;-)

FELS had the benefit of the 9 pm hour. No matter what novela is on at that hour they get good ratings because it is the time everybody watches tv. That’s why many considered Sortilegio a failure for Carla Estrada when it was the most watched novela at the time it was on. That’s also why Corazon Salvaje’s ratings were considered so awful, even now that they are in the last episodes and doing much better it’s still not enough. ASL was on at the 7 pm hour, those novelas have to be very enhanting to draw good ratings.

I’d definitely take a chance on and Angelli Nesma novela for the 9 pm hour but it seems nowadays only Salvador Mejia, Nicandro Diaz and Carla Estrada get that spot. I think Nesma and Carlos Moreno (producer of ENDA) have a much better attention to details, continuity and character arcs than Diaz and Mejia. Lucero Suarez (Querida Enemiga) is another producer that never gets even the 8 pm hour. Jose Alberto Castro (Angela, Rubi, Los Exitosos Perez) doesn’t get that time either, even after the success of Rubi. Wether those other producers had successes or not it doesn’t seem to help them to get the 9 pm hour.

Jarocha

I am all for continuing the Gancho Family Hour. I hate the thought of disbanding.

Mike, Tom's elderly mother requires 24/7 in-home care. Luckily when Tom's father passed away he left her fairly well set-up and that should last for a few years. Beyond that...well we don't know, wait and see I guess. Tom visits his mom pretty much every day to make sure her care is up to snuff, meds are on schedule, etc. This is very time-consuming and he has a lot on his plate as it is. I don't know how he does it. He has two siblings who are very little help. One cannot "handle responsibility", the other is a thief who would rob mom blind if given the chance. Tom had to get County Services involved and hire a lawyer to represent his mother in order to get power of attorney so his sister could not steal from her. So sad as his mom is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. About every three months she has some sort of episode that requires hospitalization and each time she gets a little weaker. We fear the day when she will require constant medical attention and can no longer live in her own home. Her caretakers are wonderful women but of course such care comes at a cost. It's difficult but with her own (dwindling) bank account and some help from Tom she is getting by. The biggest challenge is keeping her spirits up amidst chronic pain, meds that sometimes make her feel weird and like she is dying, that sort of thing. We worry about the situation a lot, but also recognize that stressing about it is not good for us, (especially him) either. I have a close friend and because of financial reasons her mother-in-law had to move in with them. They basically gave her their house and moved into the barn! That is a whole other drama in and of itself. Sorry for the rant, I think we are of the age where elder care for our parents is a huge concern. Unless one is rich then hard choices involving big compromises must be made I guess.
