Gancho Tuesday April 13, 2010 I'll Have What She's Having.....

Remember that scene in When Harry Met Sally? Well, I'd like what our well-rounded, warm-hearted Nieves is having--two ardent males hot on her trail, one tall, well-dressed, charming and muy rico: the other short, stout, outrageously dressed but fabulously romantic and passionate. I'm ready to call 1-800 right now. Short of that, in my younger days, wouldn't have minded having Ximena's difficult choice--hawt and passionate Rolu, or sensitive and romantic Arny. But enough of these fantasies....what happened in today's episode?

Let's skip the rehash (you either saw it, or you read it, or both) and get to the main event. Tano is having one of his unfortunate conversations. After hearing that Mauricio is worried about Lobo sniffing around his girl, Tano helpfully adds that "Sure, they're in the same business, have the same goals, talk the same language..."

Stop! Not helping. But he does promise to get the 411 on Lobo's dealings in Chicago when he goes there to work for NASCAR. Okay. Good friend after all. Just needs a little coaching in conversational empathy. There's some more nattering about Aldo's disappearance, the no-show of the detective, everything's falling apart at once. Tano assures Mau everything will work out. (These bland assurances always annoy the hell out of me. He needs more coaching fer sure.) They finish breakfast, Mauricio walks him to the door. Handshake. Man hug and Tano nestles his head on Mau's shoulder. Sweet. Off he goes to the U.S. to find out the dirt on Lobo.

Next scene: Paula and Christian are dragging back from the all night velorio for Alicia....but not together! as Paula insists on pointing out. Estrella, all excited, is off to her first gynecologist's appointment. Nieves appears on the scene fretting about HER baby, Beto, and just where he might be. No problem. Probably having a hot night with la Momia like you did with Cesarin, you picarona! Well, she's worried about Cesar too. He didn't show up for dinner last night. Christian gives her the grievous news that Cesar is languishing in jail. And all because of Marcos. Nieves Warpath comin' up. With a stuffed Giraffe purse as her scabbard and shield.

Drama time. Mauricio arrives home to find Tere waiting. Grieving for the loss of her friend Alicia ,but also worried about Monita and that skanky Lobo (sorry Julia) hanging around her. Luisa bounds down the steps and adds more worries: Dani is burning up with fever and is calling out constantly for Monita. Time to whip out the wet cloths, ice cubes and wonder of wonders, get a doctor who makes house calls. We break for ads that are mostly about junk food-- Coke, pizza and candy bars. All we need now is a Diabetes Type 2 announcement.

When we come back (lusting after all the wrong food) we're at Jimmy's gym and Lobo is asking Jimmy to fill in for him with Momia because el Jairo is back. Jimmy warns him about how dangerous Jairo is when Lo.!.the devil himself appears. In a really busy, brightly patterned shirt. Shoot the guy for bad fashion sense. His menacing goons are all in black, the better to highlight his bright hues. Our thug is also an accountant and has figured all the interest Lobo owes him on the money he lost years ago. Uh oh.

Back to the apartment. Mauricio decides to head for the vecindad to see if he can bring back Monita. Dani is quite convincing, seeming almost delusional in her sweaty, feverish state. And Andres has taken Luisa to school. Whoops. Not really worried about Dani but definitely worried about Luis in Andres' clutches. Smooth guy. Hot car. Dangerous. I'll have what she's having. Nah. Not really.

Lobo's trying to talk his way out of Jairo's threats. His career in the States is in the toilet, he's got no money, no wife, nuthin'. Jairo gets it, but promises if Lobo plays his cards right, he'll be in the money again. Constanza arrives, looking fine, and wondering who the local talent is. Jimmy quietly fills her in on Jairo's mafioso dirty-dealing secret betting rap sheet. Stay away from him. Yeah, right.

Within two seconds Connie has skipped out to flag down Jairo and offer him a deal. She's going to win that fight with Monita even if she has to do it dirty. So do we have a deal on making some money off this? Jairo's on board. And a bit taken with the chutzpah of this high-class chick.

Now to the vecindad and a creepy scene. Hissabel, overplaying the grieving amiga, has stashed Alicia's ashes in a gaudy pink cookie tin. Ugh. Well, no point in paying for an urn when she's just going to scatter her ashes in the garden of the house in Moreléon. Callous cow indeed. But a practical callous cow. Mau arrives to beg Monita to come console feverish Dani. Mom jumps in to try and prevent it. Lobo backs her up. Mau tells them to butt out. Eventually persuades Monita to come. Mom volunteers Lobo to go with. Not needed sez Monita. Off they go. Time for one of Hissy's signature insults. In my day, the men had more guts, she sneers at Lobo. Poor guy. He's getting it from both sides--Jairo and Isabel. Tal para cual.

Nieves arrives in high dudgeon at the office. The giraffe is bristling. Her earrings are beyond description. And she is mad, mad, mad!!! Marcos, on the other hand, is looking hyper-thyroid. So upset his eyes are bugging out of his head. He can't believe she and Cesar spent the night together. And he really can't believe she wants him to withdraw the charges. After all, she was SE. CUES. TRADA. No way, sniffs Nieves. I was home the next day safe and sound. And during the night!? A little eye-roll and lubricious smile. Well he took me to an hotel, a room filled with carnations, candles, the fragrance of scented soap....and a Jacuzzi! Fortunately she spares him further details but he knows his Nieves and is suffering....Yes, the pains of those horns sticking out of his forehead are grievous indeed.

Well, it seems our Nieves is unashamedly a woman who can love two men (hey, why stop at that number?) and is laying it on the line (as she practically gets bent double over the desk by an ardent and forgiving Marcos). After she rescues the giraffe that got squished in this fit of passion, she announces that she loves Marcos....but she loves Cesar too. So get 'im outta jail. Punto. The winning argument? Cesar's only crime is loving me. And you, Marcos, are guilty of the same crime. Marcos caves. She gives him a quick kiss and scoots out. Our befuddled AARP galan holds out his empty arms and wonders just what the h**l happened. End of scene.

Mientras tanto, Constanza, fresh from deal-making with Jairo, now huddles with Isabel. Seems money needs trump the finer feelings. Although she doesn't really want Monita to die, if heads have to roll, better her than Miss Constanza. She accepts Hissy's deal and promises to help our vile serpent lady with her even viler plans. Oh Connie...we were actually hoping better for you.

And Beto? Fresh from a little menacing by Ocar, and a subsequent bondage fantasy with Connie (yesterday's episode...you haven't forgotten have you?) he's now relaxing by playing with his little luchadores figurines. Action Jackson Mexico style. Paula, delivering a cappucino, is outraged. So is he. Why isn't she wearing one of those mini-skirts and a "lift and separate" bra like a good secretary would? She demands the papers he needs to sign. He drops them. She bends over to pick them up and he gets an eyeful. Threats to report him for harassment to the Executive Secretaries Sindicate. Go Paula! Enter Gabriela. Beto informs her about Oscar's threats and how he helped Connie to marry Mauricio and then swindle him out of his money. Gabriela's stunned that she didn't think of this connection. Go Gaby. You're the brightest of the bunch. Do something. We leave Beto with his dolls and hopefully, Gaby with a plan.

Now we're at the cabaña (Nest of Nefariousness) and Sal and Aldo are having a heart to heart. Sal is marveling at the impulsiveness of youth, the lack of considering consequences and Aldo's impending fatherhood. Aldo is wishing he could do it all over and make better choices. Sal's rethinking things and actually wishing he'd been a little more impulsive and less fearful of change. And fear is now the topic. Aldo's very afraid....that they'll never get out, he'll never see his dad and Estrella again, never see his baby born. Well, Sal's afraid too. But there's no harm in that. The only wrong would be not to control that fear. A paternal hug. Sal gently brushes Aldo's hair. Cross your fingers.

Monita has finally arrived at Dani's bedside and our little gal is working it for all she's worth. She's missed Monita. And looking at the doctor, she says, these are my parents. I love them a lot. They're going to get married and we'll all live together, right? Good idea, Dani. I'll have what you're having.

Family matters also at the gynecologist's office. Estrella is moved to tears by the ultrasound pictures of her little baby--his tiny head, his steadily beating heart. But her cachorro isn't with her to see this. She's alone. All alone. Regrets and loneliness. Nope, don't want what she's having. Well, the baby yes! Love 'em. But not the loneliness. Let's keep our fingers crossed for her too.

Doc has checked out Dani, prescribed medications, encouraged Mau to call if there are any other concerns and leaves. Dani is still working her program, reminding Monita that she's her mother and she wants her here. Mau and Monita both try and explain that she's busy training for a fight but Monita promises to come as often as possible. Next our clever minx insists that Mau take Monita home. Tere can watch over her while he's gone. Nuthin' doing. Once they're out of the room, our stubborn monkey insists on taking the microbus home. She wants no time with two-timing Mau, thank you very much. He protests his innocence. She doesn't believe a word and she's off.

Now we're at the park. El Jairo on a bench. Henchmen standing. Lobo arriving and looking stressed. He's got no money to pay Jairo so--go ahead and shoot me! Jairo stands, smiles craftily and reaches in his suit jacket. Lobo gulps. And Jairo pulls out a cigarette case, lights up and makes his proposition. I've got a way to get you out of debt and make a lot of money. All you have to do is arrange for Monita to lose the fight in the third round. That's crazy! No way! Way. Otherwise both you and Monita will pay with your lives.

Ay yi yi. Don't want what they're having. And there we end.

Previews:

Oscar's having a bad day. Cranky at being stuck in the cabaña. Hoping that Jeronimo may die. Otherwise he might just have to give him a little nudge in that direction.
Monita is busy training for the fight.
But Beto overhears Lobo and el Jairo talking about their plan to throw the fight.
Tune in tomorrow.

Vocabulary:
En mis dias, los hombres tenian más agallas. Men had more guts in my day.
Le quedo chico el jinete. lit. her rider is small. In other words, you Lobo are a lightweight. (Isabel's further insult to Lobo)
siempre se le suelta la lengua = Nieves telling Marcos that Beto runs off at the mouth (and told her about the marriage proposal before)
Usted no se meta! Tu no te metas! Stay out of this! Mauricio talking to Isabel and Lobo.
esparcir = scatter (as in scattering Alicia's ashes)
ne se le despegaba = he's always around her (lit. he's stuck to her) Mauricio complaining about Lobo's hanging around Monita.
susdicho = aforementioned, aforesaid An example of Christian's legalistic language, talking about Cesar's whereabouts
picarona = rascal, minx Paula, teasing Nieves about her passionate night with Cesar
tal para cual = two of a kind
parlanchin, parlanchina = talkative, motor-mouth

Dicho of the Day

To make no sense No tener ni pies ni cabeza.

Decided on this phrase, because Isabel's pathological hatred still makes no sense to me. I find her cold capacity to murder....even her own daughter.... utterly baffling.

Thanks for a quick, great recap Judy.

Tano still here, "needs a little coaching in conversational empathy." That part reminds me of Orlando in ENDA, not much empathy.

Wow, Alicia's ashes. I was somehow hoping a miracle would occur. Guess not. Perhaps the wind will blow Alicia's ashes back at Isabel and she will choke to death? "Callous cow indeed. But a practical callous cow."

Lobo's career is in the toilet, que? He's a world champion. Your career isn't in the toilet until you lose that title. You definitely need a better manager you think that. :)

And just when I thought Coni was reforming, joining forces with Jairo and Hissy! Rolling snake eyes for sure.

"Nest of Nefariousness"

"Our befuddled AARP galan holds out his empty arms and wonders just what the h**l happened."

At least Dani did not stay sick for long. I was worried they would make it really bad. Loved how when Mau showed up, everyone stood up behind Moni.

That Hissy, quite the piece of work.

Haha! Leave it to Coni and Beto to turn a real threat into a bondage fun. Those two are simply incorrigible.

But I'm worried about Coni's backsliding. Just when I'm ready to forgive her past sins she goes and pulls a stunt like this fight. Who was it asked if Coni and Moni could team up together? I think most definitely they could and it might be the only way of eradicating the evil that has recently crept into Moni's life. I am hoping for this.
Judy, your title is simply fabulous and perfectly captures the funnest theme of tonight's episode. I love how Nieves is unashamedly in love with both Marcos and Cesar. Nice lead-in paragraph as to both their assets. We should all be so lucky as Nieves. Gosh it's fun to see Marcos unable to be in control.

Judy, you do a wonderful job of describing the scenes and the essence of what the characters are doing and feeling, from lusty Nieves to lonely Estrella I feel like I'm right in the room with them.

Usually I'm very pragmatic about the deceased and would typically find a pink cookie tin as an endearing urn, but in Hissy's hands it just makes me angrier at her.

Thanks Judy! "Nest of Nefariousness" is a perfect addition to our list of descriptors.

Hi guys. Hey, Jeff, I noticed that too. Isabel and Lobo lined up behind Monita like two little tin soldiers. Bizarre placement.

Sylvia, Yes, ordinarily I wouldn't mind what kind of box the ashes were in. My friends have received very plain boxes because they were going to scatter the ashes elsewhere instead of encrypting them in a columbarium. But that pink cookies box just seemed like the final "sneer" from an uncaring, homicidal, souless woman.

Oh...and thanks to both of you for the kind words.

I will truly miss this telenovela. Usually I am SO READY for the durn things to end as we near ultimos capitulos, but this one keeps on coming up with great scenes. I will really miss this great cast. And you all!

Great job Judy, ¿Cómo no? I simply adore the smoothness of your narrative. From top to bottom it flows. I try not to consider this show being over. I guess it's always best to leave want'n more. Adriana, mi profa, says that she's about ready for it to be over. Could be she'd like that I devote more time to my studies.

Judy, I'm loving your vocabulary offering each week. May I add one more from tonight?

parlantina: A talkative little woman

It's a nifty, useful, easy to remember word. Mao used it to describe Dani when he was talking with Moni.

Coni... ouch

I still have hope as well as belief that ultimately she will do the right thing. I agree with those who have speculated that she will join Moni and conquer evil (Isabel). It's looking less likely, I admit.

Carlos

Hi Judy, Excellent recap. I've been out of town but have kept up with the recaps. Thanks Carlos, Hombre, Sylvia for yours also. The joint is certainly jumping, after all the filler. I hate it that Alicia is really dead. She didn't become a chatterbox until Isabel came back from the dead. She was very tenderhearted and didn't deserve such a horrible death.

My hope for Monita is that when she finally has to accept that Isabel is evil, she will realize that her 'true mother' is Nieves.

Little Dani was precious as always. Yes, Luisa with Andres is a bit scary. She probably is too young for Ivan, but she's too good for Andres, the slime!

Maybe Sal and Aldo will remember that Nice Nurse has a box of zombie juice and will give Oscar and his minions a little nap. A small dose for Loriloca might make it easier to get her out without too much noise and confusion.

Hi Carlos. Thanks. I'll be happy to add the word but I thought he said "parlanchina". It is a nifty word however it's spelled and pronounced.

Ten fe. I'm sure Connie will come 'round to the right side. If only because of your unwavering support, amigo mio. Hopefully we'll all have someone like you in our corner when we're doing something sketchy.

Hey Emilia. Yes, Mike told us you were off bonding with one of your old friends. Hope you had a fun time.

Andres hasn't done anything slimey yet but he just DOES give off that vibe. Not as obviously as that office vixen going after Ivan, but that's the rub...he's way subtle. Thus dangerous.

Sure a lot of relationships that need to be sorted out before this ends. And we all have different theories on how Monita will handle learning the truth about her biological mother. We shall see....

Hi Judy, I had a wonderful time in NC. We went to Charlotte to see the Jersey Boys at the Belk (?) Theater. we had lunch at Merts's Soul Food. Excellent - cornbread, black beans, collards. Yum!

I've never been a fan of Lobo but wasn't sure why. Maybe he'll be a hero and save Monita on fight day. Not that I'm holding my breath.

You were right about Marcos. He definitely looked a bit bewildered at not being in charge. Can't imagine Nieves ever letting him, or anyone else be in charge. She's a force to be reckoned with, and one of my favorites.

Judy,

You are absolutely right, he did say parlanchina. That gives us a twofer:

parlanchina &

parlantina

both nifty words.

I'll have what you're having.

Emilia, I'm so glad that you are back. You crack me up:

"She probably is too young for Ivan, but she's too good for Andres, the slime!"

Andres is so slick that I'd love to cut him some slack, but I can read his dirty little mind.

Carlos

Carlos...I'm beholden to you. You DO give many insights into the way a man's mind works. No foolin' you.

Emilia, wretched woman! you're making me hungry with talk of cornbread, black beans and collards. Although I do have some nice black beans and yellow rice in the fridge. May have to raid the leftovers before heading for bed. You're to blame, Mame!

JudyB:

Great sections from the recap..."Tano assures Mau everything will work out. (These bland assurances always annoy the hell out of me. He needs more coaching fer sure.)"

and

"Jimmy warns him about how dangerous Jairo is when Lo.!.the devil himself appears. In a really busy, brightly patterned shirt. Shoot the guy for bad fashion sense. His menacing goons are all in black, the better to highlight his bright hues".

Wonderful recap, Judy. Thank you. Plus you give the best vocab of all recappers on Caray. I liked your recap better than the episode.

What is up with Coni? Is she really going to hurt Monita or is this a plan to get to Oscar somehow? Isabel and Jairo, oh no! I still love to watch Coni with Beto. Wow, those two are good together. The way she is going Beto will have to visit her in prison.

I agree with Jeff about being relieved that Dani wasn't sick. Whew. She is a darling child and a great little actress. Luisa, on the other hand, is annoying.

Sylvia:
Isn't it cool that Nieves has the two fellas? How fun for her!

On Andres...I can't abide the child when he is singing or not singing, but I am equally annoyed by Luisa. I just can't find anything appealing about the character. The actress doesn't help that problem with her hyper viligence toward the camera.

What is the last day of Gancho, anyone?

Good morning Elna June. Muchas gracias amiga. Sylvia is the one who started me on vocabulary lists. When I was a newbie reader of recaps I always waited for hers with great anticipation because she provided a list of words. She is my mentor.

Interesting observation about Luisa. "Hyper-vigilance towards the camera" ...will have to look for that. Recent episodes have called for her to be really shrill and whiney which IS annoying. Also, for me, anyone with a high voice, gets on my nerves quickly. I'm definitely in favor of low-pitched husky voices like that of our naughty "Jacquilinay."

As for the last day of Gancho, I'm totally vague about dates. Trying not to think about it actually. Let's just say "our days are numbered".

Judy, you had me at the title. Citing one of the all time best lines and applying it (or not) to last night's events was wonderful. Amazing, from start to finish.

As much as I loved the vocabulary and dicho, the phrases interspersed throughout the recap were stellar. Many have already been noted but my pared down list includes: "action Jackson Mexican style", "AARP galan", "coaching in conversational empathy", "scabband and shield", "bland assurances", "pains of those horns sticking out of his forehead are grievous indeed" and one of my favorite words "nattering". Excellent!

Sylvia said it perfectly:"... you do a wonderful job of describing the scenes and the essence of what the characters are doing and feeling, from lusty Nieves to lonely Estrella I feel like I'm right in the room with them." Amen.

Carlos: I'm optimistic. Coni throw the fight? Absolutely. Coni assist in murder? Doubtful. For all her bravado, she seemed truly sickened when she thought Oski had killed Sal. She has the capacity for lies and deceit but I refuse to believe Beto's babe is capable of murder.

Elna June, I agree, Beto and Coni are hot. Their chemistry is amazing either because of or in spite of the fact they are so different. Their scenes together have been some of the best in the show.

Loved Nieves' reasoning that Cesar's only crime was to love her. Stating the obvious in a heartfelt simplistic way was something Marcos could understand.
Jeff and Emilia, I share your sorrow that Alicia is truly dead. As you noted Emilia, she was tenderhearted and did not deserve to die so tragically.

Judy, thank you for this marvelous chapter. I am in denial about the end of this show...

Not sure when you are leaving but wishing you traveling mercies and a wonderful visit.

Diana

Thanks Diana. We're leaving at crack of dawn Friday and hopefully we will not have the rain and fog like the last trip.

"I'll have what she's having" IS such a great line. There's now a country song (sung by Reba McEntire among others) using that same phrase. It's a hoot.

And speaking of lines "Beto's babe" is a good one, amiga. She certainly is a babe when she's around our "macho cabrio". There are so many great moments in this one. I'm getting that bittersweet nostalgic feeling as we prepare to bid farewell to all these crazy (and for the most part, endearing) characters.

Good morning all. Judy, you are so sweet for remembering my vocabulary mania from Juan Querendon. I think I may have burned myself out on that one because it went on for so darn long!

That reminds me, Emilia if you are reading this, have you by any chance kept track of the vocab from Gancho? I think you were at one time, just wondering. It would be fun to put it on a spreadsheet like we did with JQ.

I think by Jeff's calculations if this show is 220 episodes and it continues on in 1 hr segments until the last episode which will be 2 hrs, then the last show will be May 28. So see, there is plenty of time for Coni to redeem herself.

Good trip to you Judy, I hope the weather is accomodating.

Thanks for figuring that out Sylvia. Yep, plenty of time for Connie to fix her attitude. But a long time for Isabel to go on plotting evil. Ugh.

Hi Sylvia, I'm about two months behind on the vocab but will get back to it as soon as I can. I'm racing around trying to get my clothes for our son's wedding all worked out. I can either go looking like Sadie Hawkins or buy new stuff! It's coming together... Got the dresses for the wedding and rehearsal dinner. Need something for the shower this weekend and the Mothers' Day breakfast. Plus, I really, really shouldn't flaunt my WV roots by tuning up barefoot, y' think? TMI? (yup...) I'll get on the vocab and let everyone know hen it's ready.

I don't think Coni is a murderer. Mayhem, yes, actual murder, nah. My guess is that she will somehow save Monita.

Luisa is very young and probably not ready for prime time, but she is lovely and I like her a lot when she is not screeching like a teenager.

The end date should be April 30 with that day being 2 hours long. Not too much time for Coni to come around, but too long for Hissy to keep hissing.

Thanks Jeff, I guess I can't count (that's nothing new!). I like April 30th better, we get to wrap things up that much sooner and less time for Hissy's evil!

Whew. Sylvia...I can't count either. But 6 weeks seemed like a long time to endure Hissy. April 30 sounds a lot better.

Emilia...I love the idea of you sashaying down the aisle barefoot but yeah...maybe shoes would be better.

Once I did see the grandmother of the groom come down in aisle in a fancy dress and rundown loafers. Guess she wanted to be comfortable and by God she was.

Judy, the sight of me sashying would be worth the price of admission!

The sight of me spelling - even more so! SASHAYING...

Emilia: Have a wonderful time at the shower this weekend.

It sounds as though you are having a lot of fun! Savor the festivities and saunter, strut or sashay as you please!

Wishing all of you the best.

Diana

Thanks, Diana. We love the bride to be and her family. She and our son are very happy together so it is a wonderful occasion. Y'all probably have figured out that Mike and I aren't serious formal people, so we intend to boogie down and have a great time. (at the wedding, not the shower! I'll try to behave at the shower.)

Wonderful recap, Judy, breezy and fun to read as always, and of course you explained the precise words I wondered about, with your extensive vocab. Thank you.

I fear that Hissabel hasn't quite finished with her treatment of Alicia. Yes, the ashes are in a cookie tin, but do we really think she'll dutifully drive to Moroleón and sprinkle them in the garden? I doubt it.

Lobo seemed a little better in this episode (maybe in contrast to Jairo). They sure keep us guessing about him.

And Coni seemed a little worse. At this point, it'd be hard for her to be completely redeemed, but she can still change her mind.

Little Dani was great calling Monita "Mommy". It definitely helped Mauricio. Moni sure is stubborn, though, in her unwillingness to believe Estrella and Mauricio (and Beto, and Nieves, and just about everyone else except Hissabel).

Hi Hombre. Nice analysis...Connie a little worse, Lobo a little better. Isabel, "asquerosa" as always. Goodness....do you think she's going to do something heinous with those ashes!? That thought hadn't even occurred to me. Double yuck.

Judy, raving praise to your superb recap. As always, I love your themes and adept descriptions.

Not to worry; Mr. Wolfie's place in my telenovio harem is secure and if he plays a villain, ni modo. At least he's not as brain-dead as our hapless heroes, sloppy seduction attempts notwithstanding.

I also don't think Connie will really try to kill Monita. She may turn on Isabel and reveal her nefariousness in an attempt to hurt Valentina more (after throwing the fight and paying off her debt), but I don't think she's cold-blooded enough to go through with murder.

Isabel I can imagine saying she's going to Moroleón just to get away from the cramped vecindad, but dumping the ashes in the first trash bin she comes across and taking a posh vacation instead.

Hi Julia. Glad to know Señor Lobo is still firmly ensconced in your heart, along with Julian from Mi Pecado. Hmmmm.. it's getting crowded in there.

Now that we know how lethal Hissy's poison is, I wonder how Monita is going to be rescued from taking it.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that there will be no more hospital/coma scenes before the gran finale.

Emilia:

I am so happy for you and Mike. What a joyous occasion a wedding can be.

As to shoes, are you looking for comfy but dressy? My best friend is getting married on May 15 (she is 59) and she had an inspired idea. Her daughter was a professional dancer and now works in a dance shop. She went to the dance shop, got fitted for a pair of those dancing heels—she needs them in a really narrow width—and voila, the shoes came, they are really bendy and as comfy as heels get, I think, since they are made for dancing.

I have not yet been through a child's wedding, but I have two kids on the cusp. I think deciding what to wear (if you are the Mother) would be SO hard. What did you decide on; do tell. I am a geek about clothes and I am always looking for inspiration to hide the place where once dwelt my waist. Big smile.

Have a wonderful shower and do tell more!

Tu amiga in California,

Elna June

Judy, I have so many telenovios I can't keep track of them all. This is exactly as it should be. That reminds me, I wonder what Chef Hawt is up to?

Emilia, how delightful. Not only are you gaining a wonderful new family member, you also have an excuse to buy new party clothes. I'm also interested to know about the shoes a person inclined to go barefoot chooses for an occasion. Don't behave yourself TOO well. That's no fun!

EJ, great idea for shoes. I'll check to see if we even have a dance place close by. Mind you, I can't dance at all. My Cuban half must be the top half! At the risk of boring you more than a Mau and Moni conversation, maybe we'll post photos after the event (May 8th) if we still have a Ganchoteers site to converse.

I'm going to miss this show. I agree Judy, that's rare. We are usually SO READY for them to be over. Our little family here is so much fun - the highlight of my day.

I agree with Sylvia that the cookie tin for Alicia's ashes would be a sweet touch had this been done by someone who loved her. As it is, it the seems like a posthumous slap at our deceased magpie.

This reminded me of an interview with the remaining members of Monty Python after Graham Chapman died. They brought his ashes along to the interview.

Carlos

Allright all:

A couple of days ago it was Julia. Now I am having premature mourning for our show. It has been such a joy to watch that I am unreasonably cranky at the other show I am trying to view, CS. I just left a blistering comment over there regarding the supposed "hero"'s appeal and behavior.

I don't think I can keep doing CS, even though there are GREAT recappers and wonderful people on the Board, including a couple of folks (Jeri and Aribeth) who are absolute founts of info on telenovela history.

Julia:

What are you recapping? Do you like it? I cannot do an afternoon TN, for me, the evening time-slots are best.

EJ, pre-feening for Gancholandia and for the show itself.

Emilia:

DO post photos of the great day. I don't think it would be boring at all.

So we need to get permission from our blogmom to have an ongoing Gancho thread?

EJ

Elna June, please feel welcome to join us for Mi Pecado! That is what I am recapping, on Tuesday nights. It is not a comedy, no way, no how (except for dramatic stuff that strikes one as hilariously absurd) but I think it's really good.

Yes, we'll have to check with BlogMom to see if we can have a Gancho site once a month.

And Elna June, I finally bailed on Corazon Salvaje last week. I wasn't learning any Spanish because the conversations were so repetitive. And a whole lot of bellowing.

So I'm watching Mi Pecado also. Maggie and Julia are awesome recappers and the show has some sizzle (and really despicable villans). Sandy of Tenn. also watches it...and Diana. So there are some friends there.

We have some awesome new and newly out of retirement recappers on Mi Pecado. Things are really picking up over there so anyone who's in the mood for a dark drama in a gorgeous setting, please swing on over.

That little Dani is just the cutest. Way to work the sickbed drama to your maximum advantage, kiddo. I also find Luisa annoying as all heck but she's playing an angsty teen, so dead on. There are groups of kids I often see on the bus who mug to the crowd the way she mugs to the camera: pretend they're having their loud inane conversations with each other, but check around to make sure others are noticing them.

Judy, the humor always shines through and bless you for that!

- Andres: exceeds even my freshman roommate for abusing Brylcreem. Lash Andres to a pole and use his hair to lube trucks.

- Alicia's ashes: Isabel might save some for when she wants to clean out a bathtub and needs scouring powder.

- Lobo: Julia, break his will by taking him to the "Experience Music" place in Seattle. Several hours in there is guaranteed to alter his (or anyone's) mental state.

- Valentina: broken record, who cares about her anymore? Looking more and more like the fruit didn't fall far from the tree in terms of rational behavior.

- Question: is Valentina the result of Marcos' manly effort or a gang rape? Or is Marcos a gang rapist? Ahhhh... who cares anymore. Never mind.

Re our son's wedding. Emilia and I are going to Sears to get each of us a new pair of work boots. Our son wants the rehearsal dinner at some Brazilian steak place in DC, but I see nothing wrong with grilling ribs in the motel parking lot while Emilia cooks up some ramps to sooth her WV soul. Greg lives in Arlington so that sort of thing may be frowned on.

Say, what do you think of this for the mother and son dance music? Emilia's not made up her mind about it yet because our son wears size 14 shoes.

Mike, is the Experience Music Project what happened to you? :)
I love the hip hop room there, and the building is pretty mind-boggling as well. I shall take El Lobo there, and if I can't make him crack with decibels, we'll go downstairs to the Science Fiction Museum and I'll use various ray guns on him.

Mike, that song sounds great for a mother-son dance. Emilia will be fine in her steel-toe work boots.

Judy another wonderful recap. I'll echo what everybody is saying about how you always manage to capture the escence of the episode through your words.

Julia: I agree, Dany is pretty cute. I was missing her for all that time she has been away. The kids have had few scenes lately.

Elna June: I understand you about CS. I bailed that show a little later than you but I also couldn't stand Juan at all. I'm pretty easy when it comes to novelas, all I need is a likeable couple, characteres to root for and be entertained. Aimée's wedding to Renato happened in the 12th episode of CS '93. The writer extended the new CS as much as she could by joining the storyline of Yo Compro Esa Mujer with CS and it is not working at all. Now we have a Juan looking for vengeance instead of a Juan looking to have a life away from the troubles coming from the high class. Juan has studied in Europe but instead of being an educated gentleman like the main character in YCEM we have a crazy brute that looks even less educated than in the older versions of CS where Juan was poor and raised himself. Instead of Juan and Renato being half brothers and having Juan being resenftul of Renato having everything it was denied to him and now getting the woman he loved too, we have a man who resents a guy for being a Montes de Oca although he never did anything to him. He ended his relationship with Aimée horribly and now feels betrayed instead of actually having a reason to feel betrayed like in the other versions when she had promised to marry him after the trip he was making to made enough money to offer her a good life. Instead of Aimée getting married to Renato because she believed Juan was dead or in prison for many years like in the earlier versions she just marries because she feels like it for some reason. Anyway, I'll let you here a peak at the music video of CS '93 in case you ever feel like watching a well done version of that story.

Jarocha

Mr. Crankypants spent about 4 hours with his mama this afternoon, so please forgive him the extra venom.

Dancin' songs: the Budweiser theme was suggested. I think we could have fun with that one. Or Star Wars...

Mike and Emilia:

I never learned to dance a jig in workboots, but plenty of Irish guys can do it.

I don't remember Arlington; I think I have just driven through there. Does it take itself seriously as a town? We have lots of those places in CA. I avoid them like the plague.

Size 14 shoes? What did you feed that child? Emilia, is this the result of your coconut cake? I don't Emilia is safe from her son's feet unless they dance an old fashioned line dance where you start 10 feet apart and pass each other back and forth.

My suggestion for a reception jingle? Keep it real with the Beatle's "When I am 64". That'll give the guests a few uncomfortable moments and you a big laugh.

Thinking good thoughts about you and your mom, Mike.

Julia, I have changed my photo to one of my own sweet self and my new Hermano de Alma whom I met in Seattle. This I do in honor of you and Chief Sealth.

Lots of fun stuff you all. Good to hear from you Jarocha. Size 14 shoes....I'm going to credit your cornbread, Emilia.

Mike, time to kick back with a cold beer and relax, good buddy. I'm sure Carlos will join you.

Our son was born with size 2 feet. He was long and skinny and 10 pounds. He's now 6'5" so he needs those big feet so he doesn't tip over!

Great photo, Mike. Your hermano de alma looks like he'd be at home in the EMP.

JudyB, I'll have what YOU'RE having if it would
make me write with polished ease like you do! Ran out of time on a long day but couldn't crash until I gave you my thanks for your, as usual, incredible recap!

Mike and Emilia, blessings on the wonderful wedding day. Hope your son has found an angel like mine did and yes, we want photos, work boots and all. Love and laughs from us here in Gauncholand, and I'll drink to the bride and groom a couple (or more) times this weekend!

Hi all, sorry to be so late for the train AGAIN but my afternoon/evening was pretty much like Mike's, though spent with the mother un-law who was hearing voices in her head. So unlike her, must have been the drugs. M and E, your son's wedding sounds like it's gonna be a hoot. Good times.

Ramps?!?!?!? Yum!! Darn it we can't get thoses things out west unless we mail order them. I did that last year along with some fiddle head ferns but times are tough this year. I'm jealous and I'm sure I can smell them from here. Really.

I think I may bail on CS too, I'm about 2 weeks behind and am not too inspired to catch up. I'm pretty strapped for time these days but when Gancho ends will most likely try to tag along with Mi Pecado.

Mike, I adore your new photo. I do love me some pig. I mean your pal of course.
