Wed Apr. 21 Gancho - recap on hold

What can I say.....I will have to post later, but feel free to chat among yourselves until then. And HUGE thanks to Hombre who filled in for me last week when I got in a bind. I thought I would get to it tonight, but alas....I have a new old refrigerator instead.... :0)

Well heck, whatcha gonna do? You've got to keep your beer and wine chilled, right? First things first I always say.

SPOILER ALERT from this episode*** if you don't want to know what happened until the recap read no further****

Wow, things really moved along at a fast clip last night. AT LAST Gabi and Sal had their long-awaited reunion. How unfortunate for them that they had to experience Loca Interruptus in the midst of their passion. I don't ever recall a similar scene in a telenovela, where a couple is in the clothes-ripping-off stage only to practically fall on top of the crazy ex who is snoozing on the bed. Oy vay! Is this a first? For the benefit of those who did not see the episode things are so far so good. Sal and Gabi beat a hasty retreat but Loriloca is in (rather slow) pursuit. She might be skinny but she's not in very good shape.

Kris, yup, keeping your f&b fresh and cool is paramount!

Sylvia, I'm starved for details so of course I read your comment! :) What a terrible, tumultuous journey Sal has had through the second half of this story. So glad he was reunited with his beloved Gabi. I was sorry to be drinking my coffee when I read "Loca Interruptus" (genius), but my shirt and laptop are now wiped down and aready to go.

Thank you! I am still hungry for any other tasty morsels the wonderful recappers and commenters can provide from this amazing show. Gracias!

Diana

OK, I'll spill the beans about the Gabi and Salvador reunion...
Loriloca has gotten weary of skulking around Gabi's apartment waiting to pounce so she mutters a bit and decides to take a nap on Gabi's bed. A short while later Gabi makes it home and as she lets herself into the downstairs security door Salvador calls her name. Of course she thinks he's a ghost so she tells him that his murderers have been caught and his soul can now rest in peace. He keeps trying to tell her he's alive but she locks him out and tells his soul to rest. (The door is windowed.) Somehow he finally persuades her to open the door and convinces that she can't touch a ghost, he's really alive. Wheee, reunited! Of course we know that the crazy one is upstairs waiting, or sleeping, or whatever. So the loving couple, thinking they are going to have a passionate reunion, start tearing at their clothes and flop on the bed, still not seeing Loriloca! With all the noise the crazy one finally wakes up and yells, Gabi and Salvador sit up, scream bloody murder and thankfully bolt out the door. They run into the street with Loriloca in pursuit but luckily she's out of shape and can't seem to keep up. Gabi and Sal hide out in a cafe, discover they have no money, and grab a cab to Mauricio's knowing he will pay the cab and somehow protect them. So it looks like they have eluded Loriloca...for now.

Oh and my other favorite part. Monita shows up at Mau's and Tere skillfully calls the kiddies so Moni will be forced to stay. Then Marcos shows up and Moni is very irked that the kids call him grandpa and seem to adore him. She really lights into him for turning his back on Coni. Moni says that even she could see in Coni's eyes that she was not lying about killing Salvador. Bad papa, for shame! It was awesome.

Kris, looking forward to your recap. Also let us know if you just can't get to it...having recently experience life getting in the way of my novela enjoyment, I'd be happy to give a very broad review of yesterdays hijinks.

Thanks for giving us a tidbit Sylvia. I did actually understand what Moni was saying to Marcos (yeah)!

Thanks for yesterday's recap Judy. You were in top form and the vocab was great too.

Sylvia, thank you for the details on the long awaited and anticipated Gabi/Sal reunion. It seems time and absence has not dimmed their desire, bless them.

Sal can't seem to catch a breath or a break. Although he doesn't have to worry about Oscar tracking him down (any longer), he now has Loca hot on the trail. Yikes.

I would have loved to have seen Moni shame Marcos for not standing up for Coni. Who would have thought that would ever happen??!! One of the many reasons this show is so great.

Karen, glad you're back.

I already requested next Monday and Tuesday off solely for the purpose of watching Gancho. I also took Friday thinking that was the finale. However, I think the show replacing this starts on May 4th so think this finale may be Monday, the 3rd. Ack. I can't take that day off so hope they rerun it at midnight.

Diana

Diana,

On the show finale, why not experience a "mysterious" female episode at work and go to a Walmart or home and watch the show! You could probably get away with that once.... Men do it all the time for sports!

I can't imagine that they wouldn't run the last episode again that night. I've seen last episodes of novelas run on Sunday as well, if all else fails.

Thanks Diana. I hope you are well. If you can, I would follow Sandy's advice and take a late lunch to watch the show.

Has anyone weighed in on what they are watching next or now?

Diana, Sandy, Julia and I are watching Mi Pecado. For me, just because it's on at 7 pm and 7 has become my Spanish TV ritual time. Julia, as you know, is one of the recappers and she does an awesome job. I've given up on Corazon Salvaje. I sometimes watch Dinero.

Karen,

You are welcome to join us a Mi Pecado (of course!) We aren't too far into it. It is nothing like Gancho, but it does have some very KIND, GOOD characters like Gancho has mixed in with the bad. I've found that I need to have a Nieves or two to hang my hat on in a novela, tired of lots of evil. Oh yes, there is a good deal of interaction between parents and adult children which I like.....with some goofy stuff thrown in as well!

Vivi is there too.

Yesterday's episode was so darned funny. The reunion of Gabi and Sal was so sweet and yet hilarious at the same time. I'm usually not keen on flashbacks but those of Coni and Beto were a welcome exception. I loved Monita's castigation of Marcos for his treatment of Coni. Interesting that she would show such insight there yet be so blind to the treachery of Isabel. Well it at least looks like a few doubts are kicking in. This episode had some of the same frivolity as some of the earlier episodes.

Sylvia, I too loved the way Teri used the kids to ensnare Monita. It was one of those episodes that I wished would go on and on.

Whether one likes the character or not, one has to admit that Marcos makes a dandy grandpa.

Carlos

One thing I liked was how Sal "proved" to Gabi that he was alive. With a kiss! He said "could a ghost do this?"

Some more tidbits: Jerry woke up, but nobody saw this. He overheard Xime say he's going to jail. So he called Isabel, and she came to the hospital where he threatened her with all the knowledge he has of her evil doings, unless she helps him.

Aldo was reunited with his family. He later told Mau that Salvador was alive, and also how he overheard Isabel telling Oscar that Hissy had drugged Mau and Estre to separate them. So Mau probably wants him to tell Monita.

Hombre, thanks for reminding me... what better way to hasten insure Isabel's downfall than teaming her with Jerónimo?

Carlos

Jeronimo might have just sealed his own fate by showing his hand to Isabel. He's in a hospital bed, able to get up, but still awfully sore. She has access to many painful things and as we know, no compunction about using them.

Was it just me? or did anyone else wonder how long it had been since Salvador brushed his teeth? All that time drugged in the cabaña, then out cold in the Emergency Room...sure hope he rinsed out with some Listerine before he lip-locked with Gabriela. Talk about coming back from the dead!......

Hi, Kris:
My refrig went on the blink last month and it froze everything in site. I had just been to the farmer's market and, alas, $40 worth of beautiful fresh produce hit the compost pile.

I am glad you found a new old one, the new ones are outrageously expensive.

Spoiler alert from the epi***

Cap'n - The scenes with Gabi and Sal at the door were priceless. He trying to convince her that he was indeed, flesh and blood, was a beautifully played scene. Again, how I will miss our grand ensemble cast—so many talented actors. Did anyone else think that the actress who plays Gabi might have been preggers? She wasn't moving so fast in the racing from Loriloca scene.

I think Moni is very hungry for blood "family" and that even though she is rejecting Marcos now, he will find a place in her heart. He certainly asked for another "opportunity" with Valentina, and although she is still stubbornly refusing, she'll come around.

Elna June--I don't think the actress playing Gabiela is pregnant. She is a naturally full-figured gal(Lorenza has ragged her in the past about her generous proportions)and it looked like running for her was uncomfortable. If Nature has endowed you with a big chest, for sure it is! Actually, rather than Lorenza being out of shape, I think the actress playing her had to slow down and stop or she would have caught up with them. My heart went out to Gaby, she was struggling because of her size....however the actress is incredibly beautiful and I would not have her lose one single kilo. Perfect as she is...just not for running.

Thanks JudyB and Sandy for your suggestions. Once the semester is over (in the next few weeks), I'll check out my options.

I thought Gabi was hindered by the flimsy sandals she was wearing. I have lots of experience running to the bus stop in all manner of footwear, and I can tell you that boots with 3" heels are easier to run in than those super-flat thin-leather-soled sandals with just a little strap.

It's so nice that Aldo's back with the family. Now if he can just bring Valentina back into the fold...

When does Gancho end? And where will your cuartel meet up next? I'm in correspondence with a retired Latin and German professor who is playing with the idea of learning Spanish. Given his background, I figure he could learn it in about 15 minutes, right? I figure he'd fit right in with you folks.

Last show is Monday May 3rd Paula. After that, we're "unemployed".

JudyB:

What a great comment on Gabi's full figuredness. I think she is just lovely, and I agree, we cannot all be stick figures como Coni!

I certainly am no stick. When I ran a marathon (to raise money for AIDS) a few years ago my practice group made up t-shirts that said, "Yes, fat chicks like to run, too." We got a lot of support from passers-by as we trained for 6 months as a group.

EJ

Hi all. I'm still about to see yesterday's episode and the one before. We are really close to the finale because I remember all about Gaby and Salvador running from Loriloca. I thought we had more episodes before that.

The actress playing Gabriela was actually pretty slim when she was younger, she was a model for ten years before becoming and actress. I think she looks good with her new weight too.

Jarocha

We're going somewhere tonight so I got home early to do stuff and watched the episode......REALLY GOOD!

I'm still trying to get Univision to do something about the CCs. I found the following Email address for our local Univision affiliate:

preguntaleal45@univision.com

I would bet that each local station has a similar Email address available.

It's almost tragic that such a fine show would be marred such an easily fixable flaw. My next step is to file a formal complaint with the FCC about this. Perhaps if you share my strong feeling about this you might see if your own local station has a similar Email address and register your complaint. The form for an FCC complaint requires that one complain to his local station before proceeding.

Sandy, are you preparing to post recaps?

Carlos

Univision should be like Telemundo and not only have the CC's working fine but also have english CC's. This novelas have finished airing in México a long time before getting to the US so I don't think there's an excuse for the poor job they are doing here.

Jarocha

Carlos, yes, I am recapping for someone who is really busy on MP, but I'm not telling the Gancho people because this is the Harvard University of recaps and it would make me nervous to submit my humble recap in front of this audience.

A recapper on Mi Pecado who works with the deaf has explained much to us about the Univision CCs Her experience working in this field gives her more insight and gravitas. Pecado friends, correct me if I'm wrong, she said that the reason that the Univision CCs are so bad is that the company is in a financial crisis, and has to use "live" transcribers rather than having transcribers who use a video tape. The live transcribers can't stop the tape and make corrections, plus they can become tired, etc., so we see the wacky CCs. Live is less expensive. As I remember, she said that she has complained to Univision, but this has done little good. I hope I'm getting this correct, but Univision is complying with the laws regarding CCs and because of their financial situation they can't afford a better method.

I hope that I have explained it as she told us and I'm not repeating something that everyone already knows.

Thanks Jarocha.

I'd be satisfied with acceptable Spanish CCs but English CCs would be a great plus for a lot of us and for Univision as well. it would almost certainly increase their viewership. I plan to continue dogging them until something is done.

La ley es la ley.

Here is the complaint form for FCC.

Today's episode was a peach. Ximena was fabulous.

Carlos

Hi Sandy, I believe you explained the CC problem very well. You are of course speaking of our beloved Schoolmarm Jeanne. Several of us have had the great pleasure to be on recapping teams with her. Is that who you are helping out? She's a busy a lady and I'm sure will appreciate the help. You're a gem and I look forward to enjoying your recaps.

EJ you ran a marathon? Good for you!! You are officially my idol.

EJ...love your marathon story. It's tales like these that convinced me we have to stay together as a group. Even at a distance, it's like we're all gathered around some cozy spot, vino in hand, dishing and laughing. Good times.

Sandy....I wouldn't worry if I were you. Yes, the first recap is tough to do but you make such interesting, analytical comments, I KNOW your recap will be wonderful. You're wonderful...so how could it not be?

However, I understand self-doubt, believe me. Every time I have to follow one of Carlos' masterpieces of wit and wisdom (with pictures no less) I feel like a pedestrian drudge-like drone. BUT I hitch up my big girl panties and write the recap anyway. So it goes....

Oh goodie, I get Ximena? I can't wait to watch the episode and recap. Later y'all!

Sandy,

I'll bet if they get enough complaints that they will at least lean on the transcriptionists to do their job. Since at times the CCs are ahead of the dialogue, they must be simply matching a prepared script to the audio. How difficult can it be? I think that it's just sloppy work. If one of the supervisors would simply watch a show without the audio relying only on CCs they would readily see how unacceptable the current situation is.

Harvard eh?

Carlos

Elna June,

I too am greatly impressed. I was training to do my first marathon when I injured my knee running 17 miles. I switched to the bicycle after that. I'm in awe. Wow!

Carlos

Ah these painful fitness stories. I remember when I was training with a partner named Buck (first of all NEVER train with a partner named Buck, this will never end well).

We were only planning to run for 7 miles (about 2 more than I really wanted to do) but got lost and ended up doing 10 miles.

I waved good-bye gaily at my door, then dropped to my knees, crawled to the bathroom, took my shower sitting on the floor of the shower stall and fully expected to find my pelvic floor down around my knees when I got up.

Thank God Buck injured his Achilles tendon shortly after that. I was sooooo relieved!

Judy, this cracked me up:

"first of all NEVER train with a partner named Buck, this will never end well"

May I add to that:

or anyone who went to Rice (or any other university for that matter) on a track scholarship, even if he or she is 10 years older. We live and learn.

Carlos

Amen brother.

And here Mike and I were feeling all righteous because we made it a little less than a mile - walking!!

And that's without an ambulance following behind, too.
