Dinero #130- 6-10-2010: Ale or Leonor? No Contest!

The bad guys are racking up points this week. We start tonight as we ended last night, seeing two of them reel in their victims with mastery. Quintana has just told Rosario that he LOVES her. And Marco has just given Rafa a choice- his mama or the woman he loves. Either Rafa tells Ale that it all was a scam to sell his house and get her to pardon his debt, or Marco has Leonor thrown in jail. Rafa is realizing that he’s been beat. He calls Jaime and asks him to meet him at his house later.

Quintana continues to lay it on thick with Rosario. She tells him he’s taken her by surprise and she doesn’t know what to say. He says he’s felt this way for a long time, but couldn’t act on his feelings when he was still married. He tells her she deserves happiness and to have her own life. (Good points. But not with a swindler like him.) She says she has to think about it. Quintana then decides to channel Ramirez, pulls out a sheet of paper and starts to wax poetic about love. “When one FEELS love, one doesn’t have to THINK.” (deep…) He invites her and Jorge to his brother’s birthday party, and says she must tell him her decision then. He folds the poem, kisses it, and hands it to Rosario before making a dramatic exit. Jorge the Enforcer is unfortunately too late, but makes an effort to root out the dog that’s been sniffing around his baby sister.

Rafa arrives (finally!) at Marian’s house. He gives her a polite but curt handshake and tries to get right down to business, but it’s obvious that his heart and mind are elsewhere. Marian tries to be a bit flirty but gets down to business too. She restates that she likes the deal, except for Siglo’s rule about not taking all her old trucks as trade-ins. The deal is off unless they can reach agreement on this point. Rafa once again explains that this is one thing Siglo can’t budge on. He grows distraught and agitated (certain that the falling out of this deal will be just the cherry on top of a super crappy day). He asks Marian to please not do this to him. She thinks he’s just trying to manipulate her, but he assures her this is the worst day of his life, and starts pacing back and forth rubbing his temples.

Marian is obviously moved and very concerned about him. She gets him an aspirin and some water and tells him she’s never seen him like this- so down and unanimated. She rightly thinks these are the symptoms of love gone wrong. Rafa corrects her and tells her they’re the symptoms of an atomic bomb going off. Defeated, he gathers his things to leave. Marian stops him by asking if there isn’t another option for the used trucks. A bit of the old innovative, plucky Rafa comes back and he gets the idea to sell the used trucks on Celeste’s behalf. Marian likes the idea and decides to trust the matter with Rafa. She signs the contract (yay!). That’s the last happy thing that happened tonight, so I hope you all soaked in that little moment. They agree to meet the next morning at 11 to get things going, and she tells him she hopes to find him rested and in a better mood. When he leaves, she looks thoughtful.

Marco and Chavez are celebrating their victory and Chavez is assuring Marco that Franky El Rompe Huesos is in a secure location far, far away from the city. Chavez asks if Marco is sure that Rafa will give Ale up. “After all, Rafa is really in love with Ale.” Marco affirms this. “And Ale’s really in love with Rafa.” Marco freaks out at the mere thought of this and starts to abuse Chavez’ lapels. He calms himself down by assuring himself that he nipped that problem in the bud just in time (a tiempo). Chavez’ mind wonders off to lascivious thoughts about Ale. Unfortunately, he speaks these thoughts out loud and gets the stink eye from Marco. He willingly offers up his jacket lapels to Marco. “Very good. You’re learning Chavez.” After sufficiently being chastised by Marco, Chavez asks how Marco will know that Rafa has broken up with Ale. Marco assures him that he’ll know by the trail of tears and he’ll be waiting there with his handkerchief.

Chavez then reminds him that they have another pending matter- Carmela. Marco’s good mood instantly evaporates and turns to fear. “No! No!” Not only does he have to live up to their little bargain with Carmela, it has to be tonight. Marco can’t guarantee that he’ll be in the right condition to perform. He has to build up his strength (fuerzas).

Rafa has returned home to a worried Leonor, Julieta and Jaime. Leonor tearfully swears to Rafa that she didn’t sell their house. Rafa asks if she read the papers that she signed and she admits that she didn’t. It begins to dawn on her just what she did and the look on her face is just heartbreaking. “What did I do?!” Rafa tries to calm her down and tells her not to worry. He asks his mom and sis to leave him and Jaime alone to talk. Rafa then hands the documents over to Jaime to review. It’s unanimous. Rafa’s screwed. Leonor could be thrown in jail at any time if Marco feels like it. And the “buyer” is nowhere to be found. Rafa tells Jaime about Marco’s proposal and that he has to make the most important decision of his life. Ale or his mom. For Jaime, there’s no contest. Rafa looks anguished.

He makes the death march to Siglo, and takes a deep breath and gives himself a blessing (the sign of the cross) before crossing the threshold. Dandy is doing the same for Jimenez, as he’s about to head out and try to close a deal with a big client. Jimenez and Rafa cross paths and Jimenez is concerned to see how distracted and down Rafa appears. Rafa heads straight in to see Ale, who has been waiting anxiously all day for him to return with a good explanation for the house sale.

This gets ugly folks, so I am just going to give the basics of what happened. Rafa starts out with the good news. The Celeste deal is closed. Yay! He stalls. Ale asks about the other matter- the house sale. It is obvious Rafa made his choice (Leonor or Ale), but it’s not easy. Rafa says yes he knew about it. Yes, it was all part of a pre-planned swindle to get her to fall for him and pardon his debt, as well as to make some money from selling the house. No, he never broke up with his girlfriend. It was all a lie. Rafa does not look Ale in the eyes the whole time she is asking him questions, pleading with him, and crying. (I can barely look at the tv screen either.) Rafa can give her no explanation for why. All he says is that one day she’ll know everything. Ale can’t bear to hear any more or look at Rafa. She grabs her things and runs crying from the office. Rafa is also crying in anguish. “Te amo. Te amo. Perdoname Alejandra!”

Susana runs after Ale, who has caused quite the torrent of gossip amongst the sales crew with her dramatic exit. They are all sure it’s a lovers’ quarrel between her and Rafa. Dandy and Bebe try to get them all to shut up about it. Marino wonders when they’ll finally admit that those two have a relationship. When Ale turns up pregnant?

Out in Ale’s car, Susana is trying to find out what happened and also to convince Ale not to drive off in such a state. Ale tells her what Rafa said about the swindle, the lies about his love, and about not really breaking up with Vicky. Susana is impactada, but she just can’t believe it (le cueste trabajo creerlo). She really thought Rafa was in love with Ale. She cries with her best amiga, and only lets Ale drive off after she promises to call her as soon as she gets home so that she knows she’s safe. The crew continue to chatter after Ale leaves. Pepeto looks concerned about his friend and goes off to talk to Rafa. He tells Rafa the crew is gossiping about him and Ale having a lovers’ quarrel. Rafa asks Pepeto to help put a damper on those rumors, but then admits that things are pretty grim.

Back at the neighborhood bar, Carmela is warming herself up for her bonboncito Marco, by giving the waiter’s bonbon a good squeeze. Marco arrives and she greets him with a handshake almost as strong as Franky El Rompe Huesos’, and pulls him in for a kiss. She wants an explanation of why her promised night of passion was ruined, and pulls Marco in close to give it. Just then, Jimenez walks in with his client. He spots Marco and Carmela getting cozy as Marco continues his sob story. He was betrayed by the woman he loves. He keeps seeing things. He’s seeing a psychiatrist. He’s leaving town tonight to go for treatment….Hold on a second buddy! Carmela was sympathetic up until that point. If he doesn’t give her what she wants tonight, he’s going to jail. “I’m not you mama. I’m not your aunt. I’m the woman you made a deal with. It’s time to pay up.” Marco’s looking like he’s ready to run and hide and Carmela wonders if he’s not attracted to her. He assures her that of course he is. She asks him for proof in the form of a nice kiss, right here on her cheek. Marco approaches her cheek gingerly with his lips, and surprisingly meets Carmela’s lips when she turns her face just in time. She plants a big one on him, and it looks like she’s sucking all the air out of his lungs because Marco is turning as red as a beet. Jimenez gets an eyeful.

Tomorrow: Ale cries and remembers her romantic times with Rafa. Marco is there with a shoulder for her to cry on and a kiss for her forehead. Rafa swears he loves Ale and will get her back.

Vivi thank you for your sacrifice. I can't imagine how painful it was to recap some of these scenes, especially Rafa's "confession."

At least things went OK with Marian. I hope Rafa can make the meeting in his state.

One of the few points of pleasure is watching Marco getting his comeuppance now with dear Carmela.

Vivi, thanks for such an excellent detailed recap. Your title was very ingenious. It was another lamentable, mournful episode.

Marian was very nice to Rafa. I doubt most potential buyers would have closed the deal with Rafa in the state he was in. Yes, it was good to see a little of the old Rafa toward the end of the deal.

Marco and Carmela - fun to watch her get her hooks into him. I hope that Jimenez's view of this scene leads to something to help Ale or Rafa.

Sorry all, but REHASH of yesterday: Several seemed to condemn Ale's lack of trust as a class issue. I didn't see that at all. Though I know class may have been an issue with her family, Ale was seeing this issue as a betrayal of love. In yesterday's episode, Susana tried to reassure Ale that the sale wouldn't go through. Ale tearfully replied that if Rafa knew, what it really meant though was that Rafa didn't love her. Tonight's episode was all about a betrayal of love for Ale. It had nothing to do with class, inferior, superior, haughty or arrogant. IM(maybe)HO.

Pata, Thanks for the info on Sunday's show. I'll probably try and check it out.

I think I'm going to stop watching this show for a while, except when I have to recap it. I find the current state of affairs extremely upsetting. I don't mind if Rafa and Ale have to be separated, but the lie which makes her think it was all a farce really hits me where i live. Cruel to viewers I say.

Vivi...ouch ouch ouch. I feel for you amiga. How horrible to have to watch this, write about it, and I'm sure think about some of the scenes during the rest of the evening. Anything that upsets me replays in my mind off and on all night. Like Melinama, I'm not watching except for the night I have to recap.

Now on to the good stuff. Yes, as Barbara pointed out...what a clever title. No contest....and NO CONTEST. So smart, lady.

Loved your image of Jorge too late to drive off that dog sniffing around his sister, and Frankie Rompe le Huesos.

Also, I'm completely with you about condensing unpleasant scenes to the max. Ugh.

Flores...probably won't get to read your Friday recap till Monday afternoon. We have a family visit and I'm going to be chasing an adorable 2-year-old around while mom, dad, and big sister are in a wedding. Won't come up for air until they head for home Monday.

Happy Weekend everybody. And here's hoping Carmela makes Marcos REALLY SUFFER.

One final thought: BRING BACK RUBI!!!!!

Wow! What a tough one! The look on Leonora's face when she realized what she had done was so real and so sad. I hate this TN device that makes the lover lie so that his (and sometimes her) beloved thinks the worst while we the viewers know the truth and suffer.

The only light moment tonight was Chavez freely offering his lapels to Marco. Those two are always funny even when dastardly.

Yes, let's hope for some fun with Carmela tonight -- and that Jimenez' info will be useful.

Vivi, I felt really bad for you last night as I was watching, knowing you had the unfortunate task of giving us the recap. I thought Wed was tough. You had to mop up this whole mess that Chavez and Marco created. You did it with great style and gave us a wonderfully crafted recap. Thank you for that.

I thought Marian was sweet and gracious last night. I was glad the deal did not fall through.

The Ale and Rafa confession was so heart wrenching. We all need friends like Susana. She is so great in this. The whole car scene is what having good close friends is all about.

How does Marco get his face to get so red? I have noticed that before. He is the lowest single celled form of slime ever, but he is so fun to watch. Especially now when he has met his match in Carmella. She is a hoot.

I will continue to watch, even though our story lines have taken such a mournful, decietful, lie filled course. Mostly because these actors are doing such a great job of portraying all of this. It doesn't seem over acted (except of course for Vicky) or meladramitic (except of course for Vicky) but very real and full of human emotions.

Sorry about my goofed up post re. Pedro Fernandez. So I will repeat it as I posted it late yesterday. He will be on Univivion Sunday at 7PM. It sounds like it will be a variety type show. I think I will watch or at least record it as I don't think we are going to be getting any more of his music here for a while.

Vivi, Thanks. Someone had to do it and you handled it bravely with finesse. You gave us the facts of a rather grim episode without dragging us back though the sheer ugliness of it all. The scene between Marco and Carmella saved this from being a total downer and I loved how you emphasized it. I had almost forgotten the business Marco had pending with her. It will be so satisfying when all of the anvils that are currently circling above him in a holding pattern finally get clearance for landing.

Barbara, perhaps I was a little harsh on Ale yesterday, though I still wonder if she would have been so quick to jump to the conclusions she did if Rafa was from her social stratum. She certainly could have been a bit more civil with Leonor. However, when it comes to harboring rancor, I have the attention span of a fruit fly, so today's problem is how are these crazy kids going to get back together? Too bad they aren't in Guadalajara where they could avail themselves of Candi's (las Tontas) instant conflict resolution counseling.

If Rafa would just seek out competent legal counsel I believe he could have his problem solved, Marco, Chavez, and Frank behind bars, and he and Ale back between the sheets in one episode. I trust there are laws against fraud and extortion in Mexico.

I agree with Judy. Isn't it about time for Rubi's return?

Interesting that Jimenez witnessed Marco canoodling with Carmela. However, he has his own little problem incubating. Remember, he pocketed a client's cash deposit for an interior package (or something of the sort) in order to pay his kids' tuition.

Vivi, forgot to say your title was genious!!!

Vivi, thanks for a great recap of another downer episode. Recap or episode, no contest, your recap wins hands down.

Barbara, I would have to agree with you about Ale. Still some class stuff going on there, but a lot of betrayal.

Have fun over the weekend Judy. Sounds like you'll have your hands full. Rubi! Rubi!

Pata, I think the Sunday show will have some singing and a bunch of other stuff about Pedro Fernandez's life, probably not enough singing. :)

Carlos, yes a little harsh about Ale yesterday. But, then again, I was trying to figure out who was more annoying, harder to stomach, Ale the way she was acting or Ivana on STuD. That's getting bad when Ale is getting in the Ivana annoying neighborhood.

Now time for some fun. Mexico vs South Africa getting ready to start up on Univision. Opening of the World Cup.

Thanks for the recap Vivi. You did a great job. I also could not finish watching while Rafa was telling Ali he knew about the house sale. I don't know why he didn't just tell Ali the truth about Marco's ultimatum. She probably wouldn't have believed him but it would have been worth a try. He really didn't have anything to lose. I am with everyone else - we need Rubi back and soon. I don't know what the writers are thinking with this. This show is supposed to be a comedy I thought.

Jeff, I'm glad that you can enjoy watching soccer. My good friend and cardiologist(who is from Argentina) has arranged his schedule around the world cup. Here is an alternative for those who are not fans and may be looking for something a little more exciting.

Carlos

Thank you Vivi for recaping this train crash of an episode. I can't stop watching however. As upsetting as this is, I have to see how they will make everything work nicely again.

I have one thing I have to get off my chest: I despise the Carmela and Marco plot. I don't know why the writers have to make an attractive older woman to resort to almost prostitution to nail a younger guy.

I understand the writers adore big boobs and perky buns, but please, in real life a successful, fierce woman would not have to be this desperate.

Great Recap Vivi!

This was a horrible episode. I felt so sorry for Rafa and Ale, she was really hurt and when Rafa was having to admit to a lie and having to hurt Ale, the look on his face, I have to admit I did shed a tear or two.

I hope that this doesn't last too long and that in the near future some things (lies) will start to unfold leading to the fact that Rafa is innocent.

Don't want to offend anyone, but I don't miss Rubi one bit, and could care less if she ever returns. At first I thought she really cared for Jorge and maybe would be the one to bust Marco and Chavez, but she turned out to be just as bad as they are, only turning them in if she counldn't be involved with the taking of the hacienda.

Hopefully, Quintinna will really fall for Rosi and undo some of the damage that Marco and Chavez have done, or at least tell on them.

I also agree with Lynda, why didn't Rafa just tell her the truth, she may not have believed him at that moment, but when everything DOES come out, she would at least know that he tried to tell her the truth and she would probably kill Marco.

Thank you so much Vivi for the well-written recap of more pain! "Carmela is warming herself up for her bonboncito Marco, by giving the waiter’s bonbon a good squeeze." LOL! At least the Marco/Chavez and Marco/Carmela scenes were amusing.

I was glad Rafa at least made the sale. Yes, Ale does seem really hurt, but I still think her class consciousness is the reason she doesn't implicitly trust Rafa as she does Marco. From the beginning she assumed the accident was his fault and on-purpose, both of which weren't true. I did feel sorry for her last night, though.

Melinama - I have wondered if they lose a lot of viewers by making things too painful for too long. ENDA was like that, hard to watch. Sortilegio seemed to balance it well, some pain, but then it would clear up quickly.

Rafa couldn't tell the truth because Marco had threatened that if he did his Mama would go to jail for sure.

Lynda and Kat, I think that Rafa fears that if he tells Ale, Marco will immediately have Leonor tossed in jail. Don't forget, Marco is also representing Señor Vega (Frank) in his complaint against Rafa's mom. Of course you guys are correct. If Rafa were to tell Ale the truth, whether or not she believes him, this thing would get wrapped up quickly. There is certainly the risk, however, that Leonor could wind up in jail until things are sorted out, this being Mexico. Apparently (judging from past shows) all it takes to get someone locked up is to make a complaint.

Carlos

Thanks for a great recap, Vivi, and a very clever title.

Carlos, thanks for reminding us that Jimenez took that cash. I'm sort of hoping the writers forgot about that, but you're right, it could come back to haunt him. In fact, if Claudia found out, and told Marco, then Marco would have a way to keep Jimenez quiet about the Carmela kiss.

I sort of thought Jaime said the the papers Leonor signed run for 6 months (the deposit was paid now, closing anytime within 6 months), so the threat of Leonor being sent to jail will run for that long. Could be wrong about that, though.

Kat, that would be great if Quintana really falls for Rosario, but despite his nice manner, I think he's a true bad guy, and it's unlikely he can change.

I still think the whole cooked up scheme is ridiculous. If Rafa was just seducing Ale to make him forgive the debt, well, he never asked her to do that. And she won't anyway. And how can someone think Leonor would sell the house with the lien on it, and just "hope" the buyer wouldn't search the title? And that all this wouldn't come out? She'd have to be naive and foolish. But OF COURSE she's not naive and foolish enough to fall for a phony contest. In other words, this whole situation is "only in a novela".

Fortunately, we have Jimenez going to the exact same bar as Marco, proving that "only in a novela" can also help matters.

Hombre - for sure, only in a novela, beanie time all around!

Quintana is after the hacienda, I believe, and doesn't really have a thing for Rosario. Jorge senses that he's a rat, too.

I have to say after thinking about it some more, that Ale isn't really as bad as her family in terms of the class thing. She was willing to overcome it, it is they who influence her and pull her the other way. So, maybe I was too hard on her, too. : )

Yes it is beanie time! Because in the real world, Rafa would have told Ale the truth, they would have gotten a REAL lawyer and exposed Marco, Frank, & Chavez for the rats that they really are.
But alas, we are in novela land and things have to be drawn out for a while.

Yes Rafa needs to lawyer up pronto

And not with Jaime! I don't understand if the writers want him to be so spastic/nerdy, or if he is just overplaying his part. He needs to chill out.

I also don't understand why the writers would put Ale and Rafa in this position when they have to work together and see each other every day. I thought maybe he would lose the celeste deal and lose his job so he wouldn't be subjected to seeing Ale every day and visa versa.

What the heck happened to Marian? She certainly didn't exert much effort to either seduce Rafa or drive a hard bargain. Was she overpowered by those sad puppydog eyes? Does she have future plans for him? Rosaura made her sound like a slobbering wild-eyed nacophiliac. So far she's been extremely nice, amazingly patient, exceptionally accomodating... the perfect lady.
