Mon. 8/9/10 Club Gancho... More Beauties of un Gancho al Corazón
This weeks featured beverage is a Black and Tan; attractive and very thirst quenching. Here at Club Gancho we use Guiness (of course) and Dos Equis.
I had a wonderful birthday weekend beginning at noon Friday with the lovelies from my office taking me out for lunch. We had BBQ... great. Saturday night the Lovely Linda took me out to Big Daddy O's (a new seafood restaurant located less than two miles from our home) for oysters and seafood. With the exception of the price of oysters doubling, we are coping in the aftermath of the spill. Sunday, my daughter Andrea came over and prepared her trademark enchiladas, a shrimp and avocado salad, while Linda cooked up jalapeños stuffed with cheese, refried beans, and her corn, onion, and jalapeño relish. I'm dieting this week.
My nurse Kelli's husband took this photo on a weekend trip to West Texas He found it both amusing and a bit frightening. Talk about enhancing the stereotype.
This week we continue to look back on the beauties inhabiting un Gancho. As you all may have guessed, one of our first two beauties (mom and her hembral spawn) is one of my favorite characters ever. Perhaps not the sweetest or even most beautiful, but certainly the most provocative.
Jaqueline... cool elegance
Constanza... be still my heart!
Estrella Falcon...actriz
Regina... racy racer
Angelli Nesma... the genius behind it all
Nieves Ochoa... femme fatale
Isabela... fill in your own caption......
Nice Nurse

Aw Coni and Jacki. What a pair! One of my favorite mother and daughter duo. Not exactly the best relationship ever but it was so fun to watch.
While I was looking through youtube a few days I found this cute video of Beto and Coni. I love them.
Jarocha
Happy birthday Carlos! It sounds as though you celebrated in fine style. I love it when birthday celebrations last for days, a week or even longer. I'm salivating at the menus you've been enjoying. Oysters and clams on the half shell are my favorite. A little cocktail sauce and a cold beer - heaven on earth.
I would live to try a Black and Tan - I've never had one and it sounds delish.
Coni and Jacquie - dysfunctional and delightful! I'm with Jarocha, love 'em and miss 'em! (as well as all of Club Gancho).
Wishing all of you a day dappled in sunshine.
Diana
@Jarocha...I'm going to look at the video right now.
Jarocha, I really liked that clip. It was so amazing that stuck up rich girl Connie would really fall for earthy Beto, but she did, and that helped turn her whole life around.
Carlos,
Thanks so much for opening the Gancholandia doors again. I think I'll try your Black and Tan, but I must confess, Guinness is a tough, strong beer. On your suggestion, I'll give it a shot though.
Interesting that you posted a photograph of Jaqueline of Gancho. Those of us who are wiping our tears after the ending of Mi Pecado, have nothing but good things to say about Ursula Prats, the actress. She played Matilde in MP and did a bang up job on a really fun character. In the future, I will definitely keep on the lookout for anything this actress is in, she is fabulous.
Love your friend's photo, it looks just like Texas to me! (Said by a person living in Tennessee!) We have revived our old 35mm camera in order to take B/W photos of our grandchildren. The digital cameras that we have bought through the years have never taken the same high quality photos that our old Olympus did. We have taken it a step further and begun going out into the country to take B/W of landscapes, plus then we have an excuse to eat in all the BBQ places in the surrounding areas....the whole thing has been a fun project.
I'm taking a small break from Univision, but plan to stop back in for Gancho, just hope I remember in time to post! I plan to see everyone full time again for Cuando Te Enamoro...
PS, Carlos, your birthday "celebrations" sounded wonderful!
Thanks for the video Jarocha. Will you be watching football tonight and tomorrow pm?
Trying to get things done before classes start and still relaxing with family.
Carlos
What, the rest of you don't always shop for your liquor and guns at the same place? What fun would it be to have one without the other?
I am back from vacation, and back in a sweater and wool socks. Summer weather has been sparse and sporadic in the northwest. It was a very fun trip even with a huge windstorm one morning that sunk one of our neighbors' boats. I spent some quality time in my new kayak and even more quality time with my 10 nieces and nephews and my siblings. My 20-month-old niece is very condescending to her five-months-younger cousin and always calls him "the baby." It's hilarious.
Paula, I always enjoy hearing from you. I love your website
Diana, gee, I wish you could join us here at one of our favorite places and enjoy a beer (I'll bet that you'd enjoy our Shiner Bock) and some of our succulent, sweet, and briny Gulf oysters... a taste of heaven.
Judy, I'm enjoying the current shows, at the moment watching them all including CS (I really need to cut back) but Gancho was really special as are the Ganchadores.
Hombre, how's the reading of el Sombrero... going? It is special for me because we started reading it before my heart surgery but never finished discussing it though I finished reading it shortly after. A couple of years later I requested that we revisit it and we reread it and finished up our discussion. I think it is a real literary gem.
Sandy, I cracked up when I saw Nick's pictures. I still use my Minolta camera a lot using BW film. I'd love to have my own darkroom. It costs more and takes much longer to get BW pictures back. I'm sure you'd like a Black and Tan. The lager beer nicely buffers the robust flavor and bitterness of the Guiness, and it's a very pretty drink as well.
Karen, good for you, relaxing and enjoying the family. We are doing the same. I love Summer.

I'm glad you all liked the clip, I really enjoyed all their moments as a couple. I think Coni and Beto were a very special couple.
I have some bad news: Roberto Cantoral, one of the best songwriters México has ever had, died yesterday :(. He is also the father of Itatí Cantoral. What a big loss to music and of course to his family.
Jarocha
Singing "La Barca" and later "El Reloj" with Itatí in one of her novelas .

Still hot here and we could use some rain.
Carlos
I'm not really getting very far with El Sombrero. The old fashioned language is throwing me a bit. It's not as easy to read as say, Harry Potter (which is of course a translation, not originally written in Spanish). But I'm going back to it periodically, reading a page at a time, and maybe it'll get easier.
The one thing about Llena de Amor that has always made me doubt it was that Angelli wasn't planning on doing that novela. She wanted to do a novela called "Antonella" and had already casted Valentino and Ariadne for the main roles when she was told she had to do "Mi Gorda Bella". She kept them and other actors she had planned to cast for "Antonella" but she got delayed for a month in her production that already was pre-producing the story.
Jarocha
That's how I knew about Angelli planning on doing Antonella but having to do Mi Gorda Bella instead, or Salvador Majía planning to remake El Privilegio de Amar but deciding to remake Amada Enemiga after all (Not to be confused with Querida Enemiga).
Jarocha
Thanks for the last two weeks of women. Been enjoyable to see them again. I also forgot all about Regina. Came in and was gone. Still need to see Nieves, Hissabel, Alicia. Fair and balanced. :)
Looks like we will get a chance to see more of Paula on Llena, one of my faves.
Jarocha, thanks for all of the great links and all the information.
Agree with Sandy, that looks like Texas to me. Or maybe Tennessee? Northern Minnesota? ;)
Julia, wouldn't mind a little sweater weather right now. Then again, we are all sweaters here right now.
Carlos
We still have some openings for recappers on Llena de Amor, and it's looking like a good show so far! Alternate Wednesdays are open, as well as Thursdays until September.
Don't y'all miss recapping? I know we miss reading your recaps!
So you're liking Llena so far? I'm trying to cut back on my watching and commenting but I may eventually get sucked in.
Yes, I'm really liking Llena de Amor. We're only three days in, but there has been lots of action so far, and the characters are real characters, to say the least. It has that Angelli Nesma touch. There's some serious villainy going on, but also humorous scenes so it isn't a lot of doom and gloom. And lots of swimming pool scenes; that never hurts.
Julia, I'd love to recap LldA (I'm really enjoying it so far), but as Judy points out, Hombre and I are doing Dinero on Fridays. Maybe if a spot comes up when Dinero is done...
Carlos
I'm sure Dinero will end before Llena is over and probably Cathy would be relieved to give up her Wednesday spot. I think teaching eats up a lot of her time. And what's up with JayGee? Did he not realize this week was his turn? Or was he just on board for Mi Pecado?
Got a email from my 6-year-old granddaughter Kate telling me about all her activities ("I love busy days" sez she.) but what really cracked me up was her little dig at Jack at the end.
"Jack wanted to go to Vacation Bible School (like me) but he couldn't because he wasn't potty-trained. Also he's been naughty and whiny all week."
Take that Jack! Takes me back to my kid days when I always wanted to "tell on" my nasty big sister for something she'd done and mom wouldn't let me. NO TATTLE TALES!!!! Since my mom was the youngest of 10 and quite naughty herself, she was usually on the side of the malefactor.
That Kate is funny, sneaking a complaint about her brother into a matter-of-fact report about his disappointment. I too remember doing that as a kid. Mom hated tattling, but if you HAD to tell what someone did in order to explain something else, that was okay, right?
When one of us yelled, "Mom! So-and-so is doing (fill-in-the-blank meanness)!!!!" my mother would just respond, "so why are you yelling at ME?"
What has become of Sylvia? I know that she was going to be in Hawaii for awhile, but I thought that she would be back by now. I miss her.
Judy, I noticed the robe with the pears last night on LldA. What did you think of the show? There are certainly some eccentric and quirky, as well as vicious characters. I have mixed feelings so far. Plenty of familiar faces and great recappers but I'm already watching too many TNs. We'll see.
Carlos
That being said, I'm very taken with the long, lingering tender looks between Valentino Lanus and his co-star in the fat suit. And I liked the rip-roaring hostage scene last night because I like seeing that actor in a different role (he's Beto's brother and played a despicable slimey villain in Mi Pecado). Also like the actress even though she is ALWAYS the snotty rich girl. Also like the weird Howard Hughesey uncle down in the basement or wherever he is. In short, I'm already in trouble!
How about you? I know you like the husky-voiced actress playing Fedra....anyone else?
- Mom! Christine keeps bossing me around!
- What did she do, Robby?
- She told me to stop hitting her!
Belated Feliz Cumpleanos to you, Br'er Carlos! Sounds like the ladies in your family basically spoiled you pretty rotten. Way to go!
Question: no kiddin', how are the Gulf oysters you're getting now? Any taste or odor at all?
Also, where in West Texas is the liquor and guns store? Please don't say San Angelo and light off Paula and me. You know we love to rant about Tom Green County.
Always good to see everyone! Sorry we're not commenting more, but we sure do enjoy everyone's company
Mike, thanks for the birthday wishes. The oysters are not abundant, but for this time of year are quite good. Yesterday, the oysters arrived at Bluewater just as we were finishing up shrimp and gumbo (we had gone hoping for oysters but they were out when we arrived). So far, they haven't raised the prices.
The little store with convenient one stop shopping is between San Antonio and Uvalde, though San Angelo may very well have one of its own.
Carlos
I'm not watching LLena de Amor regularly but at times I'll keep it on because Valentino Lanús is so cute in it. I love his character.
Jarocha
There is a liquor store in KY called "Belchers' Beer", Belcher being the name of the owner. Not quite as good as the Dead End sign at the cemetery in Illinois, but close...
Mike is visiting his mother in the nursing home. (I take a break on weekends.) He may need a motorcycle ride to clear his brain in a little while! This morning we finished clearing out her apartment. Her furniture is in storage and all the rest is on our living room floor waiting to be sorted - keep, throw, donate.
Have a great weekend.......
Tasty! Kind of murmured to me, "You really oughta be using me to wash down a dozen raw oysters, Mikey."
And, yeah, I'm looking forward to Cap'n Sharkbait's return to the fold, too.
I'm watching StuD (what woman can resist Fernando Colunga?) but don't usually comment because I see it a day late. And I've been spending way too much time on the computer lately! Trying to limit my chatter to the Dinero line, where I'm recapping, and the Gancho line where all my buddies hang out.
Your hubster gets major points for helping you stay awake for CS and watching it with you. Whadda guy! Well, you've already let us know he's a lovable hunk, but just tell him he's gone up 400 points on my man-0-meter which puts him on about the same level as Colunga and Yañez. Enjoy!
