El Clon Thursday August 26: Summary for Discussion
-- Honey, there’s something you need to know – your father has a clone.
-- (Yawn) …and they say I’m the one on drugs.
Marisa is gazing idly out the window when she sees something that defies belief. She calls out to Rosa: Is that Lucas? It’s him, it’s Diego, Rosa tells her triumphantly and she rushes down to invite Daniel inside.
Across town, Alejandro and Natalia continue to sing their same sad song. She promises it will never, ever happen again, cross my heart and hope to die. He tells her it is her absolute pinkie-swear last chance.
Once inside Casa Ferrer, Daniel is formally introduced to Marisa. They stare at one another and she backs away. Daniel asks Rosa why everyone is afraid of him. She babbles happily as if she were talking to Diego: Do you remember how you crawled in the livingroom when you were a toddler? See that vase – you broke it twice! Come have some of your favorite cake!
At Gloria’s, that very lady is speaking for us all. She reminds Alejandro that any addict who wants to get better has to do something active towards recovery, has to ask for professional help. And that’s something Natalia is not willing to do. Alejandro is not a nurse or doctor or therapist. He can’t help Nati, but Nati can destroy his dreams. And the next time Gloria sees Natalia doing drugs, she’s going to hand her over to her own mother, la cabeza de fósforo (the match head).
We see Natalia alone in the apartment, moving languidly, maybe cleaning up.
Alejandro walks sadly down the street.
Daniel is still inside Casa Ferrer, now alone with Marisa. She touches his arm, then his face; the two are drawn to one another. Eres tan bonita, says Daniel. They begin to kiss when a scandalized Rosa enters and cries out: You can’t kiss her! She’s your sister-in-law! Daniel doesn’t understand. He knows he had a brother named Diego and that he died. Now he learns that Diego has a surviving twin, Lucas, and he will soon meet him. Rosa wants to get Enrique, the reincarnation specialist, there for the meeting.
For his part, Enrique, at Empresas Ferrer, is still burned because Leo asked for Roberto’s help instead of his in arranging to adopt Daniel. So he tells Carolina to call Casa Ferrer and tell them he can’t make it.
Anita catches sight of Pablo and Malicia kissing at a beach club.
At Albieri’s Clinic, Escobar is calling Malicia and getting no answer. Mostró los garros, verdad? (She showed her claws, huh?) remarks Julio. He tells Escobar that even though Malicia acted like a good person when she worked at the clinic, the truth is that none of them, not even Luisa, really knew her.
Dora is home with Daniel when she takes a call from Dra Silvia. The women agree that they need to talk.
Silvia is shown calling from Albieri’s house in his and Luisa’s presence. Silvia declares her intention of informing the FDA about Albieri. Luisa does her mother tigress act on Albi’s behalf. But what finally deters Silvia is the thought of the terrible invasion of Dora’s and Daniel’s privacy that such exposure would entail. She says she will give the information to Dora and let her decide what to do about it. As soon as Silvia leaves, Albieri rants about the absurdity of weighing the happiness of someone like Dora against the greatness of his accomplishment.
At Casa Ferrer, Marisa tells Lucas: Te vi, Lucas, vi a tu clon. (I saw you, Lucas, I saw your clone!) It was very strange – he’s twenty years younger, but it’s you, it’s your clone!
It seems that Zoraida has a new magical coffee cup and is in Latifa’s kitchen reading the grounds for Jade. She tells her she’ll have to decide whether to follow him (Lucas) or the shadow. But what will happen? Jade wants to know. Alas, Zoraida has no answers. Latifa interrupts their conversation to announce that Jade has a visitor. It is everyone’s favorite blue-eyed Arab, Zein, come to ask her to reconsider. He would like her to give him the six-months they agreed upon. If it doesn’t work out, she’s a free woman. Tío Alí asks Zein to let Jade have 24 hours to think about it.
After Zein leaves, Alí does his best to convince Jade to accept Zein’s offer. While Alí would gladly take her back, he knows she’d be unhappy in his house. Nor would she be happy as the third or fourth wife of an elderly widower.
Said finds a gold-colored veil that Jade left behind at his house and Jadiya sees him clutching it sadly. She tells him again that since her mother doesn’t love her, she doesn’t love her mother.
Mohamed, Latifa and Samira are at home talking about Jade. Latifa reminds them that she and Jade are like sisters. Mohamed angrily declares that he doesn’t even want to hear her name mentioned in his house.
Cristina shows up in Leonardo’s office. I heard you wanted to talk to me, she says. Yes, he says. Here’s the truth: Albieri made a clone of Lucas. Cristina can’t believe her ears. She is convinced it is just another one of Leo’s lies and she storms out angrily.
Dora arrives at Albieri’s house where he, Silvia and Luisa are awaiting her. She demands an explanation. How dare you say my son isn’t a person!
Albi says calmly: Es una persona y es un clon. (He’s a person and he’s a clone.)
And Silvia echoes: Es cierto, Dora. Daniel es un clon. (It’s true, Dora, Daniel is a clone.)
Silvia tries to explain how it all happened, but Dora won’t allow her to speak. She runs out of the house, away from the “estupideces y mentiras” that Silvia is spinning.
Dora takes refuge with her friend Vicky in Cristina’s bar. Dora thinks Albieri and Silvia must have used some kind of brujería (witchcraft) to make Daniel look exactly like Lucas but the idea of cloning is beyond her. Dora is still upset about her ruptured friendship with Cristina, and Vicky promises to talk to Cris. Then Miguel asks Dora to dance. And this time, for no particular reason, she is moving more like her old self.
At home at Dora’s apartment, Daniel confides to his grandmother that he is anxious to meet his brother, Lucas.
The conversation between Lucas and Marisa about Daniel continues at the Casa Ferrer. Lucas is amazed that Marisa has joined the ‘Clone Believers.’ You’re the most practical person I know, he says. But Lucas, says Marisa, you have to see him. When she saw his twenty-year-old self, she felt the desire to start her life again…
Natalia arrives at Casa Ferrer and is greeted by her mother with some startling news. I wanted you to know what has been happening around here, says Marisa. It seems your father has a clone. Natalia laughs cynically and says: And they say I’m the one on drugs…
And then she adds: Me vas a dar dinero? (You going to give me money?)
Marisa says no and then becomes distracted, looking for her phone. She and Rosa walk out of the room, thinking the phone might be in the kitchen. They leave Natalia alone in the livingroom, with Marisa’s purse. When they come back, the purse is open, $100 is missing and Natalia is gone. The conclusion is inescapable: !Natalia sacó dinero de mi billetera! (Natalia took money from my wallet!)
In the final scene, Malicia opens the door to ‘her’ apartment and finds herself facing Escobar.

NovelaMaven, I especially liked your description of Nati and Alejo's sad song. And it looked to me like Zoraida's cup was broken, so perhaps it's the same one. Yes, I'm saying she brought a broken cup across the Atlantic, and somehow manages to serve coffee in it. Stranger things have happened. By the way, why did Said have Jade's veil? Didn't he get rid of her stuff?
There were a few memorable moments tonight. I loved when Rosa barged in on Marisa and Daniel. It was a perfect moment of tension, passion, and confusion. I also thought Alí did an especially good job advising Jade, making up somewhat for having manipulated her before.
I'm happy this show has left the doldrums (for the most part). We've had some long-awaited character development recently, especially for Albieri (now less conciliatory), Luisa (now at her best and worst), and Daniel (increasingly distressed). Nazira and Marisa have also been humanizing, and even Karla was vaguely humanoid in the strangely touching "who's the mother?" scene with Daniel. Unfortunately, Cristina has run out of steam, and Enrique and Rosa are becoming less likable by the minute. (I've especially wanted to ring Rosa's smug little neck in the last few episodes.) I was also happy to see the return of Nazira's fairy tale, which looks great and is very amusing.
A couple word bits: Alicia and Escobarde were mice (ratones), not rats (ratas). The intensifying 'ón' suffix apparently intensifies the smallness of rats, not their, uh, bigness. Also, there was a discussion of 'matriz' a while ago. Sylvia said she knew Daniel was a clone because she knew the matrix. This context shows she was referring to Lucas (the original of whom the clone was a copy), rather than Dora (via her womb), because knowing Dora doesn't prove Daniel is a clone, while knowing Lucas does.
Speaking of which, I am enjoying Dora's reaction to the clone story. I like that she doesn't understand, and thinks it means Daniel is a robot or something. But while amusing, her situation is still depressing. It's going to take work to explain to her what's going on. She's been betrayed so often that she takes the explanations as personal attacks. Even if she and Cris were on better terms, or if Vicky knew what a clone was, they would have a hard time explaining it to her without her taking offense.
Also, there was a discussion recently about Jade and Lucas's relationship. It's hard to know what to think. I think the show has misled us into thinking Jade is super-crazy, when she will only turn out to be mildly crazy. I suspect we're already headed there, since there was recently a scene where she admitted her responsibility, though I have a hard time believing she's sincere. Anyway, from what we've seen, this is the best I can come up with. I think Jade's and Lucas's love for one another (which is fantasy, novela love) never really wore out, despite everyone saying that, recently even Jade. I think Jade, being such a blockhead, is currently trying to convince herself of what all her acquaintances have been telling her for years, that her problems are due to her pursuing Lucas. But as we know, Jade is fundamentally irrational: she cannot analyze her own actions and plans for their effectiveness, but only acts on emotion and instinct, like a three-year-old or an animal. Since she cannot understand she is to blame, and since she is still obsessed with Lucas, the story everyone tells her mutates within her brain to become "all my troubles are Lucas's fault." I expect that one way or another, she will eventually abandon this belief, which is the only thing preventing her from jumping into Lucas's pants on the street.
Didn't say enough about Jean's recapping skills earlier, so add them to this thank you notation. We are so lucky to have such great recappers and responsive viewers.
Does Malicia finally get her comupance? Hope so. Is Escobar redeemed? Hope not. Can Marisa recapture her youth doing what she's always done albeit with a younger man? Poo. Lois
Is it me, or are Jade and Lucas the two most boring characters in this whole thing? Well, perhaps after Nati and Alejandro...
En todos casos, muchas gracias por su ayuda!
I too was cheering when Gloria let Alejandro know what's what in no uncertain terms. Perhaps she'll be the one to finally bring this sad situation to a head. Alej is apparently too much in love/too much of a wuss to do what's needed.
Interesting that it was Anita who saw Pablo and Malicia kissing. She has had a rather minor role thus far in the TN, but perhaps she'll be the one to unmask Malicia.
I enjoyed the confrontation between Cristina and Leo. I thought Saúl Lisazo did a skillful job of showing just the right degree of sparkle in his eyes as he watched Cristina rant on.
Finally, welcome back, Luke. Great commentary. Yes, Said did get rid of Jade's stuff, but he apparently kept the veil as his security blanket.
Luke, your commentary was spot on, thanks for sharing your insight into this TN.
I think Daniel has become everyone's "Fountain of Youth".
When seeing him they are remembering themselves 20 years younger and a lot of "what ifs" going through their minds.
Loved the Cris and Leo scene, they should just admit they still love each other and get it over it. Now that Daniel (Diego 20 years ago) has reappeared, they can start where they left off.
Rosemary
Great point on Gloria because i do not believe as much as Alejandro keeps warning Nati this is the absolute last time for the 1000 times he has already said that to her. It's going to take his mother to do this task herself.
It's frightening how Albieri and Leo just don't have any consideration at all for Dora. Especially Albieri like Dora is so insignificant to him.
Coming soon in Sept. i think it said the 8th that a new novela from the creators of Donde Esta Elisa. It's called Alquien Te Mira with Cristian Meir, Danna Garcia,Rafael Amaya and Geraldine Bazan. It's a mystery suspense novela at 10pm.
I'm down to one novela on Univision and two on Telemundo i can't wait for this new one to start it looks good.
The most bizarre line had to be what you led off the recap with - Marisa telling Nati - Oh, by the way your father has a clone.
I also liked how Ali framed Jade's choices:
1) live in my house in Fez, pray and do housework all day and maybe I can marry you as 4th wife to some old guy; or
2) finish out your bargain with Zein, stay in Miami and be the pampered wife of a rich guy who adores you and doesn't even demand sex.
Which one to choose????
Otherwise, I feel like we are back to spinning in place again.
Except for the news about the clone getting out, the plot does not seem to be advancing at all.
I totally don't buy the idea that if a 40 year old person suddenly saw someone who looked exactly like the 20 year old version of their son, lover, father or whatever, that they would suddenly be transported back to how they felt when they were 20. Daniel isn't Diego or Lucas, he just looks like they did 20 years ago. How can Marisa say after seeing Daniel for 30 seconds that he is passionate and romantic, etc.
I've said this before but I am convinced more than ever that we are leading up to a jump forward in time. Both Rania and Karla have 6 months to go in their pregnancies, Jade's deal with Zein is for 6 months. I bet that Nati goes into rehab for 6 months and then we wind up all these stories. If this thing is going to end in September, I hope we start seeing an 'ultimos semanas' announcement pretty soon.
Many think that Jade is stupid for not leaving with Zein because he's handsome and rich. Those things were never her motive because remember Lucas is handsome and very rich too. The differences between Lucas and his rivals is that Jade is willing to live in a cardboard box with Lucas than a mansion with Said. The only thing that matters to her is the presence of Lucas in her life. It's easy for Said and Zein to be charming and romantic with Jade because their muslim. She was practically hand delivered to them. They didn't even have to work for her. The same can't said about Lucas, he's the outsider, the one who first fell in love with her and the one who had to literally ask this woman to leave everything behind to be with him. Lucas failure to be with Jade isn't due to him not trying, it all depends on her. Only by leaving everything behind can she be with the man she loves. Having to make that choice is why she struggles all her life.
The thrust of this novela is about a muslim woman who has to choose to concede to the precepts of her faith or leave with the man she loves who to her represents the ultimate leap of faith.
I liked Rosa's barging in on Marisa and Daniel, too. It's clear, as others have said, that being in Daniel's presence gets Marisa's juices flowing.
Kate P, there are at least two of us without a tivo:)
Juanita, about Anita -- wasn't she the one who, upon seeing Daniel's photo several episodes back -- looked so shocked? As far as I can recall, we never found out why she reacted that way. Maybe she originally had a more significant role and then the editors cut it way back. I hope they don't leave this beach club scene dangling, although I could see them using it solely as a transition to Escobar trying to call Malicia at the apartment. He gets no answer because she's out with Pablo.
Rosemary, maybe there are still sparks between Leo and Cristina, but he has shown himself to be so heartless and selfish, (with no thoughts at all about how Dora and Estela must feel), that I can't help but think she deserves better. What abou Zein? Now that would be a handsome couple! Or some galán we have yet to meet...
Blusamurai, I agree that Albieri is getting more repulsive by the moment. He completely discounts Dora -- and Daniel! -- as human beings.
Lois, while I would dearly love to see Malicia get her comeuppance, I'm afraid she might just slither away in the night to prey on a new group of unsuspecting victims. Even so, what about the picture of Leonardo she was looking at so wickedly right at the time she came on the scene? Was that just a red herring? Or will we see a connection between Malicia and Leo before we're done?
Last night, I thought, belonged to Marisa. From her first sight of Daniel from the upstairs window to her realization that a 20-year-old version of her husband turns her on, to her discovery that her drug-addicted daughter is stealing from her.
I can't wait to see where the writers take this. (In the case of Natalia, straight to rehab, I hope)
I'm also anxious to see how:
--Lucas and Daniel respond to one another when they finally meet.
--Daniel reacts when he UNDERSTANDS that he is Lucas's clone.
By the way, since, given Karla's um... proclivities... no one can say for sure who the father of her baby is, wouldn't it be funny if, like Dora's baby, it turned out to be, say, color-discordant?
para mi, the only reason to watch univision is William Levy.
SUGGESTION: maybe we can just have a comment section for T-mundo tns; no recaps necessary, since they have CC3.
Mrslmgallego, in Houston they do not broadcast CC3 and this week while in South Texas I find that don't show it here. I guess they assume that everyone speaks Spanish and that the ones that do not would not watch TNs.
Boy, have I got news for them.
Rosemary
Rosemary: I like your observation that Daniel inspires lots of nostalgia. That's a motif I hadn't expected to see in the show, and I'm enjoying it. (Jean, I think it's plausible that part of the confused responses of people who have known Lucas or Diego will be a sort of deja vu disorientation, and remembering things from 20 years ago.) And I also noticed a sparkle in Leonardo in his scene with Cristina. I couldn't quite tell if he was smug in telling her the truth, or just happy to see her. I also suspect you're right about them getting back together, despite Leo being an unlovable egomaniac.
About the suggestions for recapping more Telemundo novelas, I think the lack of CC3 in some areas is only one reason to do it. As we all know, sometimes we miss episodes for some reason (or parts, as I sometimes do with my flaky station), and anyway the recaps are fun to read and write (though they take some work). I'm not sure what to say. If a new Telemundo show comes on that I expect I'll enjoy, I would be willing to cover a night a week, tentatively. At the moment I don't think Alguien Te Mira will grab me in quite the way El Clon or Victorinos did, but I'm interested to see what's coming up this Fall.
Anon 11:49: I agree about Jade's view on the pros and cons of Lucas/Said/Zein, although I would add that sometimes she thinks about how Jadiya fits into all this. (The preview suggests tonight she will once again remember she has a daughter.)
Also, in response to NovelaMaven and some other people who have mentioned this lately, I think Albieri still cares about Daniel. The reason he is confronting everyone else first is that he knows it will be hardest to confront Daniel. The one he hurt the most is the one he loves the most. Of course, he doesn't realize that his plan will backfire because Daniel is still out there, getting more distressed by the day, probably about to hear the story from someone other than Albieri.
As for HRH( His Royal Hotness) he has two novelas coming up the remake of Cunos de Lobos and the other one Privlegio de Amar.In case those who don't know who his HRH is that's William Levy., can't wait.
I just wish that Univision was more like Telemundo with their novelas.
It does seem like some kind of winding down is around the corner. This week was the etapa decisiva, and it seems like all the plot lines are running low on steam. I just hope nothing gets rushed...
And I completely agree on Albi's derision of Dora: disturbing. It seems as if her lack of understanding what he's done points to her lack of education. But if she's able to explain artificial insemination to Estela, then surely someone can explain cloning in layman's terms to her, verdad?
I'm sure Dora can understand that DNA that was tampoco suya ni del donador was incubated within her. Dudo que Dora es tonta; soy cierta que ella no quiso escuchar a "locura."
(oh, and if my word verification is ever "xerox," I'll laugh out loud) :-)
I for one wouldn't be surprised if this TN killed off both of them together.
Joan
Blusamurai - YES! sooo looking forward to new HRH shows (miss him tanto tanto), including Mujeres Asesinas 3 w/ Belinda.
For those who didn't watch Dona Barbara, there was a very funny subplot in which, Federica, the daughter of the town mayor was trying to get pregnant for similar reasons as Karla. She had sex with the three vaqueros on Christian Meier's ranch (two of whom were played by the actors portraying Zein and Alej). None of them knew that she was having sex with the others. Then she gets pregnant and each of the vaqueros believes he is the father. She has the baby and it is black and clearly none of the vaqueros were the father. Her father has a stroke in the delivery room. She refers to the baby as her 'chocolatito.' What a great novela that was.
I might add that though I get Telemundo, I don't get cc3. That's probably just as well, since I'm watching the novelas in part to improve my Spanish, and though I used to think that watching in Spanish with captions in English was helpful, I no longer am so sure. Right now, I alternate between watching "El Clon" with Spanish captions and watching with none. I could make arguments for both approaches.
The upcoming novela I'm really excited about is "La Reina del Sur." I know almost nothing about the cast or when it will start, but I read the book by Arturo Perez Reverte in English a number of years ago and really liked it (though his novel "The Fencing Master" is my favorite). When I heard that they're making a TN of La Reina del Sur, I knew I wanted to see it. But it will be just my luck that it will start in early October, and I'll thus miss the first three weeks. With recaps I could deal with that, but without them....
I've only seen two Telemundo TNs--El Clon and ¿Dónde Está Elisa? I thought both of them were refreshingly different and more interesting than the usual stereotypic Univision offerings, though I've enjoyed some of those, too. And the Spanish captions on Telemundo are MUCH better than the hundred-monkeys-typing-at-once gibberish that I often get on Univision.
Anyway, I STRONGLY wish that CarayCaray would broaden its focus to include more from Telemundo.
Juanita if you miss episodes you can go to youtube for them, for some unexplained reason Telemundo doesn't act like Univision when their novelas are on over here.
Loved Donde Esta Elisa and was able to follow to some extent just because it was interesting enough to try harder. Besides, was aided by a really great forum with lots of input. Am looking forward to Alguin te Mira and hoping somehow CarayCaray has a place to review and discuss it. Any takers???
Meanwhile, I'll really miss El Clon. Great story, good acting. The recaps, summaries, Spanish lessons and comments were so valuable. Hope CarayCaray does have more Telemundo contacts.
Please, please, please! Lois
And "El Phantasma de Elena" it's
an interesting show.
kc
What i found interesting about the novelas on Telemundo is we get them shown first over here in the U.S. then they are shown in Mexico later over there. Sort of like how they watch most of the novelas on Univision before they start over here.
I got this info from Jarocha who knows a lot about the industry.
