La Fea Más Bella #19-20 9/24/10 Ortiz bets on the wrong horse, and his horse is a dead duck!

Read Chris's original recap. That recap covers Caps 18, 19, and 20. For Caps 19 and 20, start at the paragraph that begins, “Paula calls a friend at another company,” and read to the end of the recap.

Capitulo 19

1. MamaT says Fernando should’ve put super-competent Alicia in charge, considering the great report she made the last time. PapaH says, “Of course you’re going to forget about promoting la fea.”

2. Fernando tells Lety that he can’t present her promotion to the board after this mess. Lety breaks down and says that what upsets her is not her promotion, but his meeting and his image.

3. Marcia tells Alicia that this is her big chance since Lety has taken such a fall.

4. Lety cries to the cuartel about the catastrophe. They tell her that Ortiz is bitter because his wife cheats on him. Paula calls a technician from another company.

5. Ariel wants to monitor all transactions of Conceptos. Humberto refuses. Ariel proposes Plan B, that Olarte passes him all information. Humberto supports that because the balance wasn’t ready for today’s meeting.

6. Ortiz won’t let the cuartel access the computer. Fernando sets him straight. Ortiz prints the report for Lety. Fernando orders him to bring Lety’s computer back NOW. Olarte orders him to copy the files to CD.

7. Luigi throws a tantrum which causes a spark which scares the dog which he tied to the camera which falls over and breaks.

8. Fernando vetoes Ariel’s financial supervision, since Ariel’s excuse was that the balance wasn’t ready, and now it is.

Capitulo 20
The Cap 20 recap continues at the link posted with Cap 19.

1. The cuartel suspects that Ortiz raided Lety’s files. All the good guys pitch in: Saimon sabotages Luigi’s computer and Irmita summons Ortiz to fix it. Celso unlocks Ortiz’s office and the cuartel finds the file in his desk.

2. Lety explains the balance report and defends it against Ariel. Fernando gets board approval for her promotion to the executive position.

3. Lety shows Fernando that Ortiz copied her files. Ortiz tells Olarte that the cuartel found the file. Fernando gives Ortiz a choice: squeal and submit a voluntary resignation, or refuse to talk and end up in jail. Ortiz implicates Olarte but not Alicia.

4. Luigi gushes about the upcoming Benny Ibara video clip and slips in a barely-veiled reference to Benny being the son of Julissa, who plays Teresita.

5. Olarte begs Ariel for help and gets the brush-off. But when Ariel sees that Fernando is going to interrogate Olarte, Ariel promises him a good job if he doesn’t squeal, and a long list of enemies if he does.

6. Fernando offers Olarte a choice similar to Ortiz’s. Olarte denies that Ariel was involved, and he refuses to tell who blocked Lety’s computer. Fernando fires him and promises to spread his reputation throughout Mexico’s business world.

7. Fernando reports to the board why Olarte was fired. He refuses Ariel’s demand to appoint the replacement. Ariel says, “You think I was behind the conspiracy?” Fern says, “Olarte was your ally and everyone knows it.

Thanks Paula, thanks Ferro, thanks Jaime and all the great actors in this TN. Finally Lety has a good outcome on at least one episode. I can keep my head above water if she isn't thwarted absolutely every day. Great action packed episodes today though and they didn't even get out of the building.

There are so many interruptions at lunch time that I miss so much of the show. So thanks very much for the recaps, Paula and Ferro and they are fun and informative. The IT guy was pretty stupid in allying himself with the wrong people. I'd go with the boss not some subordinate like Olarte. Why didn't they just say "Alicia" messed up Lety's computer since they are canned anyway. Darn.

GinCA

We've seen two of Lety's fantasies this week. But did you notice? The fantasies didn't start until after Juana read her fortune! That was in 12. Lety confirmed Juana's reliability with Sara, then the fantasies started: the dance floor in #14 and the ride home in #17. I think her brain is scavenging for a way to believe that the prediction will come true.

During dance practice, we meet Felix Greco who is the actual choreographer for LFMB. You see his name in the credits.

Note the contrast. How Fernando responds when Lety has troubles (the knight rides up on his charger and sleighs the dragon!), vs how Ariel responds when Olarte has troubles ('why are you bothering me with this?'). And didn't you just LOVE how Fernando handled the nogoodniks?? Delicious!

Good point about when the fantasies started. Lety is smart and practical; she wouldn't get carried away with these dreams if they didn't have some basis in real likelihood...well, fortune-teller's likelihood, anyway.

Someday, eventually, Fernando will start having similar fantasies about Lety, rather than fantasizing about stuffing her in the trunk of the car, right?

Saw bits and pieces of this PAula, but your point about when Lety's fantasies begin is an interesting one.

Now that I've gotten used to the politically incorrect way of portraying gays, I can really enjoy Luigi's histrionics. First time around I was so shocked I was uncomfortable.

I just finished watching these two episodes. Again the first time I saw this was on a disk set and I would fast forward through lots of parts. This has been so much fun catching every moment this time around. Thanks once more and I am sure not for the last time to both Paula and Ferro.

One of my favorite parts is when Fernado and Letty have just left Lugis studio after the camera was smashed and Letty is crying it wasn't her fault. There little interactions there together so much fun to watch.

Paula I really appriciate all your work and your great insights and all the work you are doing. Thanks again so much.

Did I actually spell "slay" as "sleigh"? Nahh. That must've been my evil twin. Or, no! It was a really strange typo! That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Why didn't they rat out Alicia? Ortiz hoped, as payback, she'd help him get his severance or something. And Ariel forbade Olarte from tying anyone else to the plot because Ariel has uses for Alicia. Olarte thinks that if he sucks up to Ariel, Ariel will take good care of him. If not Ariel, then maybe the tooth fairy will help him out.

Julia, I can't blame Lety for believing a vidente. After all, she's in a telenovela, and we know TN videntes are right 100% of the time! And will Fernando fantasize about Lety? Well, that would be telling!

Cheryl, you like that Lety isn't thwarted at every turn. That's part of what I LOVE about this novela. All the small steps. She's steadily gaining ground, but only a little bit at a time. Did you see the way Fernando looked at her after he fired Ortiz? (With apologies to Whittier) " 'Who touches a hair of yon lemon head Dies like a dog!' he said.”

A few cap's ago when Tomas was helping Lety cook the books, Lety said, "Tomorrow could be the most important day of my life." Other characters said things to imply that the meeting would be a pivotal moment. Those comments are in the script for a reason.

But I don't see why. Yes, Lety was made acting VP. So??? Without giving away spoilers, does anyone think the meeting day was a huge turning point in Lety's life? I just don't see it. What am I missing?

It was a very huge turning point in Lety's life, but maybe not for the reasons she thinks.

She probably thinks it's a turning point because it decisively cements her value to Fernando and to Conceptos; impresses the senior Mendiolas; and ends any plausible professional rivalry between her and Alicia.

But the real reason it's a turning point is because she has now - after several opportunities to turn back - misrepresented the company's financial position to its board of directors. In writing. She, Fernando, and Omar are now bound together by a risky and illegal act that threatens to destroy all of them.

If their gamble pays off, they'll get away with it. If not, their odds will continue to get worse and the stakes will keep getting higher. I can think of only three ways to end the game:
1) Win
2) Quit and face the consequences, which could include jail
3) Get caught, and definitely go to jail.

That's a turning point!

Wow, these episodes were awesome! I absolutely love how the cuartel de las feas sticks together. As a group they are super powerful. They even move about as an aggregate, shuffling along bumping into each other all the time. Just think, because they worked as a team and acted decisively and rapidly they helped get the IT Engineer and Olarte fired and Lety set up as acting VP...all in one afternoon.

Julie, that's an excellent analysis of why the meeting could have been a turning point for Lety. Even though Fer, Omar and Lety are on the "good" side what they did wasn't honest. So yes, definitely a moral or ethical dilemma for Lety. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

Luigi is a scream. He's cruel to Lety but his insults are always hilarious. In this episode he called her a "tlacuache con bigotes", or a possum with moustaches. In fact, her funny little mannerisms of squinting her eyes does make her appear rather possum-like. I wonder if the writers wrote that in or if Sergio ad-libbed it?

Paula, your recap was excellent and included some pivotal observations about the dynamics between Fernando, Olarte and Ariel. Thank you!!

Julie, I think you got it - that's why the day was pivotal for Lety. Now that you say it, it makes perfect sense.

Sylvia, it's as if the cuartel is a single organism. It is spoken of in the singular, not the plural - it's not "the hens" or something. It moves like one big caterpillar. It acts in concert, whether primping Lety or harassing Alicia. And when one member succeeds, the whole cuartel feels as if it succeeded. The exceptions are Lety and Irma. They are part of the cuartel but not always part of the single organism.

I often wonder whether Sergio is playing from the script or improvising for Luigi. Maybe Marta can weigh in because at this point the script is almost identical to BLF. To the point of Fernando referring to his "apartment" even though he lives in a house! (In BLF he lived in an apt; that got left in the script.)

Nothing against the cuartel, but...

...I
...hate
...caterpillars!!!!

Ahem. Back to the conversation...

Pues, querida Julie, didn't you also come to hate the cuartel?

Yeah, but I didn't realize it was because they're a caterpillar! Now it all makes sense!!

I have no idea, paula, have to go back to my blf dvd to see... but Hugo (Luigi) used to refer to Betty as 'moco' (snort), 'moscorrofio con bigotes / or simply moscorrofio' so i have to dig into what 'moscorrofio' stands for, if it indicates a possum-like animal or not...
regarding...
Why didn't they just say "Alicia" messed up Lety's computer since they are canned anyway. Darn.
I agree that Ariel needs her to stay out of the issue fo the computer foul-up since he has lost Olarte as his 'spy' there, so he is only left with Alicia there.
LOVED julie's analysis on why the day was so pivotal for Lety... So true!
and one little clarification... when the movie camera broke and Lety came out upset she thought they would blame her for the extra expense... Fernando followed her to let her know that the camera was insured so they would not have to pay that much for the repair.
And about the cuartel acting as a single entity, Fernando and Omar have also noticed that ...

well, mosco seems to be related to mosquitoes, and a buzzing nuisance

One question... maybe others have paid more attention than me...
I know Lety has the blinking eye tick that Fernando imitates here and there...
and the jijiji laugh that he had to get used to as well...
other than her looks, which are not quite as bad as Betty's...
what else are the not so desirable 'habits'/features that Lety has?
Betty had her looks, her laugh (totally different than Lety but still awkward), and she kept up tripping right over Armando, usually from behind him...
what else have we noticed?

Luigi gushes about the upcoming Benny Ibara video clip and slips in a barely-veiled reference to Benny being the son of Julissa, who plays Teresita.
Did you all notice how Julissa would 'glow a smile' every time his name was mentioned in that scene? lol she must be quite proud of her son.

Lety must not suffer...
so... like you said, Paula...
Fernando charges once he sees her cry... he was dealing with his own 'panic attack' up until he saw her break down and cry... all of a sudden top priority was 'lety must not suffer' and he charges over Alicia, Marcia, Ariel and anyone he needs to to stop Lety from suffering... even running out after her when the camera broke to make sure she was not taking it too hard on herself...

there was a storm around my house fri around noon, so the section between Lety begins to present the report to Fer drilling Ortiz is missing in my dvdr. guess I will have to go home a little early to check that out... lol have to see how Fernando proposed her promotion and how Humberto, Ariel, Teresita and marcia reacted to it.

Bet: (walks to her desk, grabs the valletilla that he had given her in his car, dries her tears and blows her nose with it, he stands behind her, looks visibly moved by her suffering) Doctor, since I don't have a handkerchief, can I borrow your balletilla again? I had washed it yesterday and I was going to...
Arm: (rolls his eyes) Keep it!! Keep it, I give it to you.
Bet: Thank you, Doctor.
Arm: (has turned around and is picking up the vhs tapes from the floor to see if one of them is the one he is looking for. The last one is it.) Here it is. (walks by her toward the board room)
Bet: (still crying, wiping her face with the red cloth) So cute! (tan lindo!)

(Hugo is showing everyone his new collection after Hugo greets all the board members... complimenting Margarita on her Versace jacket. He also makes mention that Daniel is becoming an old-maid man... Daniel says single man. Hugo says he is also single, and if Daniel were the lone ranger he would be happy being silver (LR's horse). Hugo calls MB the african queen due to her deep tan. ...
Betty fetches Armando at the showroom, of course Hugo confronts her first, and ARmando tells Hugo he will deal with her...
Hugo walks in the meeting, since there is no available seat he asks Mario if he will loan him his legs (will allow him to sit on his lap) Mario replies that the interest rate would be too high... Hugo then tries to turn to Daniel but Daniel is too busy with Olarte punching numbers on the calculator...
(when Armando gathers everyone again after firing Olarte)
Hugo: Ah now this is becoming like a Hitchcock movie and I am beginning to get cus-cus! Armando, tell us please the name of that person!
MB: Ay yes! Tell us who was the murderer!...
Rob: But in any case, we have to find a replacement for Doctor Olarte. Fairly urgently.
MB: IF it is not something too complicated and you all explain to me what needs to be done, I will be the VP!
Hugo: Ay, no no! you better come here and color here with me! (hands her a color pencil)
so in BLF there is no 'accident' at this time...

sorry that last post was pieces of the BLF scenes corresponding to friday's ep in LFMB

MB = maria beatriz = ana leticia
hugo = luigi
Rob = Roberto = Humberto
Marga = Margarita = Teresita
Arm = Armando = Fernando
Bet = Betty = Lety

There is one key moment where BLF and LFMB are different... when Armando tells Betty she can keep the [car cleaning cloth] she is standing by her desk, he is still behind her, so he turns around looking through the VHS tapes on his own... finds the one he needs and says 'here it is', and goes by her, ... IMO.. giving her time to calm down on her own...
in LFMB this did not happen like that, it was not Fernando on his own who found the CD, they both saw it and Fernando does his happy dance almost tripping out the door (LOL!) but he did not find it on his own on his own initiative...

Did anyone else catch when Luigi said that if he ended up having to change careers he would go to europe and design clothing, which was his hobby? (allusion to BLF where Hugo is a fashion designer)

Not so desirable habits/features of Lety:

The major thing I notice is her lack of confidence, manifested in the way she walks with her head down and kind of crab-scuttles, especially when she's approaching Fernando in the office. It makes her look like a beaten-down old lady with a hunchback. Very unappealing, and it seems to make Fernando and Omar uncomfortable. I don't know why someone wouldn't just tell her to stand up straight and hold her head up. Fernando has started making a few suggestions, like wondering why she acts like there is a barrier next to his desk, but she persists in behaving like a lowly serf.

I don't like the scrunchy-faces she makes. I know she has a tendency to wallow in self-pity over her looks, but it doesn't make sense to go out of her way to make matters worse. I mean, has she seen those scrunchy-faces in a mirror? You'd think that would cure her of the habit immediately.

(Fernando questions her approaching his desk) wondering why she acts like there is a barrier next to his desk...
good! then you agree with me that when he reprimends her about how she approaches his desk is asking her to move on forward and not stop at his desk, he tells her that it seems as if there was an invisible wall around his desk which she does not believe herself allowed to cross... he actually wants her to move on to stand in front of his desk...

i totally agree that her stance makes her low self-esteem look worse...
