Anybody in for blogging Eva Luna?

Hello all past, present, and possibly future recappers,

So far we have only ONE volunteer for Eva Luna - Elvira! But she can't do Eva Luna alone. Any other takers? If not, you'll be getting one recap per week. (Thank you Elvira!)

Gosh. I thought Sweeney was going to recap. Or is that Elvira? Well, good luck finding folks, Melinama. And if not. Yes, indeed. One recap per week. Y punto.

For Guy's sake I will give this novela a week and see if I like it enough to stick to it. If I do, I can volunteer to do fridays or one weekday.

Is this coming on at one of the prime time slots when another one ends? What about the group doing the one that is ending?

Yeah, I'm Elvira! LOL. I can recap any day of the week. The time is good for me too.

It looks like Eva Luna is going to be on between Llena de Amor and Soy tu Dueña. (8 pm, 7 central). Unless they change the times or something.

Hey Ferro, of our Dinero club nobody wants Eva Luna, which is starting at 8 pm when Dinero ends, I think on November 1.

Well, if Axel on Llena wakes up with amnesia, Ferro is going to suddenly be available. I'm hoping that doesn't happen, though.

I'm sort of looking forward to Eva Luna because I've never seen Guy Ecker in anything and I've heard he's good, but I'm pretty attached to recapping LldA. I hope we get some volunteers, even people who want to try it once or twice but not commit long-term. It makes the shows so much more fun.

Yeah, we definitely want you to keep capping Llena de amor, Julia! And I really hope that Ferro won't be moving on from Llena either—he's fantastic. But then again, he'd be fantastic with Eva Luna, so either way, we win, I guess!

I am interested in Eva Luna because, like you, I've heard of Guy Ecker but never seen him in anything. I keep on hearing how great he is. I think it's interesting that he's actually an American who broke into the TN market.

I'm one of the Dinero folk, but I also recently started recapping Verdad on Fridays (and it looks like there will actually be Friday episodes again), so I'm looking forward to only having one. I will check out Eva Luna though, although I feel a bit put off that they deceive us with an Isabel Allende title (one of my favorite authors), but the novela has nothing to do with that famous character. Oh well. I have also never seen Guy Ecker in a novela and have heard good things about him. Like you Sweeney, I think it's interesting that he's actually a gringo. It does seem to me that he's a bit long in the tooth to still play the "young" galan next to the very young heroine. Perhaps if the actress didn't look so young I wouldn't have a problem (like FC and Lucero in STUD).

I loved Fea Mas Bea when it ran the first time around in the U.S. and am somewhat surprised to see it getting such prime-time re-cap treatment with its noon re-runs. guess that doesn't impact the availability of good recappers for a prime-time program like Eva Luna. or does it? Wish I could re-cap but my Spanish is just not good enough. I'm taking night classes now but it will be a while, if ever. And even then, recapping for this site requires much more than translation skills. Recappers have great insights, sharp wits, a sense of history of the telenovela culture, and in addition, are such good, writers. Is there something bad in the preview "buzz" about Eva Luna that relates to the lack of recapper interest?

Dona Felipa

Usually, in what I've seen, when a network starts their first novela they tend to put as much quality in the story, actors, sets, etc., as they can because they want to make the audience interested in future productions. It's only when a network has done alot of telenovelas that they get lazy (like Televisa).

I'd be very intrigued by Eva Luna if I had Univision.

Jarocha

I was surprised when I found out Guy Ecker's age (50? wow, he doesn't look it) but I guess that's the point—he doesn't look it. I think he can pass for early 40ish. The actress playing the lead could be late 20s, so if we go with that, the age difference (late 20s/40) isn't too bad. Not any worse than your average Harlequin Romance. (I was telling my sister, these telenovelas are a lot like a Harlequin Romance that takes 6 months to finish! LOL.)

I am fascinated with the idea of Eva Luna, in part because Ecker is a gringo, and in part because like Jarocha points out, this is a first production for Univision. Probably they will really work to make it the best that they can. (I live in hope, anyway!) It looks very slick from the trailers and previews. Also, I've never seen a telenovela set in the USA.

Out of curiosity I looked up Blanca Soto, who plays Eva, and I can't find her age (yet). But it says that she won a beauty pageant in 1997, so she's easily in her late 20s (probably early 30s) by now. So I hope the age difference between the two won't look too bad (seeing as I think Guy Ecker can "pass" for early 40s).

I wish there wasn't the confusion over the name Eva Luna, though. Even Wikipedia thinks that Guy Ecker is starring in an adaptation to the Allende version, since they link to a page about Allende's "Eva Luna."

I'm in. It's been awhile since I last recapped a novela. I would like to do Fridays if possible, but if someone prefers that day instead I'm willing to switch. It's been awhile. I missed you guys!!

Gloria, great! You are only our second blogger for this novela, so sure you can have Friday. Let's hope some more step up to the plate!

Jarocha:

As far as I know Te amaré en silencio was the first Univision telenovela (in 2003), and to be honest, it was waaaay far from high quality... :) Hopefully Eva Luna will be better.

Yay Gloria, glad you're in!

It looks like Unvision is promoting this as its first "primetime" telenovela. I guess that is the distinction.

Yay, two recappers! I am sad to inform you that we have encountered amnesia on Llena de Amor. Does that mean Ferro is out? Will he want to try this new show? We will see.

Julia no puede ser more amnesia? According to telenovelas, 1/4 of Mexicans experience amnesia, and half are not the children of the parents who raise them.

I can only remember that EY was in that one. I thought it was produced by Telemundo. I got the impression that Univision was touting Eva Luna as their first production, my mistake. Oh well, who knows now.

Jarocha

Hooray for Gloria and Sweeney/Elvira. I'm sure if you two get it going, others will come on board. Thanks for stepping up to the plate.

I can help fill in during the week until you find somebody permanent if you want. I like Guy Ecker but am not familiar with Blanca Soto. I wonder if Jarocha can give us some backgrounder on her?

Martaivett: You'd be terrific, natch! Looking forward to seeing you on this one.

Well... I'm reading the recap for last night's Episode of Llena and based on my stated policy that would make me available for Eva Luna. The only problem is that Friday is really the only day I can do it, I just don't have time during the week to watch and recap an episode. I confess that I usually only watch whatever show I'm on one day a week, when it's my turn. I see that Friday has been claimed, so based on that I'll stick to Llena for now. It pains me to do so, I hate amnesia stories with the fiery passion of burning hell. Anyway - I wish I had the opportunity to do a day of each show, but there's just no way. I'm even teaching a class one night a week now. I hope you all have fun with this show! What are the Dinero recappers going to do when their show is gone, are they all going on sabbatical?

Hi Ferro, what makes you think there won't be amnesia in Eva Luna? Anyway it's possible Gloria could switch to another night if you wanted to do Eva Luna. I can't speak for the other recappers, but I like shows like Dinero (and Juan Querendón) which are not such torture to watch, not so much cruelty and murder. And less amnesia.

That's the other thing, there is no way to know if the next show will have amnesia too. I will soldier on with Llena. My wife is already watching two shows with weeks and weeks of them still on the DVR because our baby girl has to have Wow Wow Wubbzy on all day and won't let her watch, I know if I start Eva Luna she'll want to see that too (Guy Ecker fan) and our DVR will explode. One more reason I better stay with Llena.

Ferro, if you want Friday then I can switch to Thursdays. That's no problems. I'm easy going. Really any day will be fine. But I would prefer not doing Wednesday's if possible because I get back late from church.

Thanks Gloria but I'm going to stick with Llena, the gang over there convinced me that Axel's amnesia is spotty, just the last few weeks, not full on total amnesia (I didn't watch last night so I didn't see exactly how it came out) so I'm not going to follow through on my threat to quit any show with amnesia. Splitting hairs I know, but for now I'm going to stay over there. Thank you so much for offering though!

Maybe Blusamurai would agree to help out. I know she prefers dramatic telenovelas to comedy.

Maybe you could ask her Jardinera? I believe she comments regularly on Dueña.

She helped out a lot on Mi Pecado when recappers were out of town or snowed under. Sometimes doing two recaps a week. Really a trooper.

What about creating discussion posts on the first week? There'll be two recaps and on the other days you could create "Let's talk about Eva Luna" posts. I'm sure there'll be people who would fill in the gaps and write a few sentences about what happened in the episode.
And if viewers like the show there'll be recappers. It's a romantic-dramatic primetime telenovela with Guy Handsome Ecker after all. The whole La Mentira Para Siempre Fanclub will watch it.

I'm still wondering what the whole Dinero crew is going to do - do we have an unemployment office for recappers?

Out-of-work recappers, standing in line for government cheese...which they'll have to bribe a judge to get, and which may be poisoned...

YAY Ferro, I am so glad, so glad, so glad you are sticking with Llena! We would have missed you terribly on Fridays! And it's true—it's only partial amnesia with Axel!

I keep on hearing about the wonderfulness of Guy Ecker, and this only fuels my anticipation to see this telenovela! LOL.

Perhaps a discussion of the show the first week might be a good way to kick things off if not enough recappers sign up right away.

I just want to give a disclaimer here—I'm looking forward to recapping, but I don't want to overstate my skills here. Some days are pretty decent, other days it seems like I miss quite a bit.

(I do think my comprehension can depend on the environment present when I'm watching. If someone is in the room, asking me to tell them what's going on, distracting me, my comprehension goes way down. Needless to say, when I'm writing a recap, I'll make sure no one else is around! LOL.)

So anyway, as long as everyone knows what to expect from me, then I'm raring to go! Just please everybody, fill in the blanks that I miss. I'll be relying on you all!

Bring on November 1!

Yeah...not sure why they are touting this as their first production, because Te Amaré En Silencio was definitely made by Univision and broadcast by them in 2003.

I knew that when I saw the Eva Luna promotions and wondered what they meant. I was thinking it could have been a different production company, like for Marielena and Guadalupe in the 1990's.

But the IMDb definitely shows Univision as the production company for TAES. The location for Marielana and Guadalupe (1993) are Miami, but TAES was made in SoCal.

IIRC, Bambi was blacklisted by Televisa for a number of years after making Guadalupe. All three of these telenovelas star EY.

The production companies for the earlier two are: Capitalvision International Corp., Televisión Española (TVE)

I think Univision is touting this as their first Primetime telenovela. This is the wording I've seen used. I think they are implying here that "Primetime" means it'll be higher quality?

Okay, then I'll stay on Fridays. If no one minds them begining up later on Saturday and no one else volunteers just yet then perhaps I can do another day. I can give it a try for a while anyway.

I don't think EL's Univision's first "primetime" novela: in this passage from Cambridge University Press's Emotions and Multilingualism, the author refers to TAES in the Preface:

"...Real friends and colleagues were not the only people who helped me in the writing process – so did my imaginary friends. It so happened that December 15, 2003, the day I began to write this book, was also the day of the world premiere of the first Spanish-language telenovela produced and filmed in the United States, Te amaré en silencio. From then on, every weekday at nine the incomparable Eduardo Yañez and Ana Carolina da Fonseca accompanied me on my journey to the world of emotions in a language not my own..."

I remember Jardinera said she and her husband watched TAES, so I'm thinking it was at 9 p.m.

It looks like Univision is doing a little fibbing, then, or the press is getting the wrong idea, because there are plenty of articles stating that Eva Luna is the network's first prime-time telenovela. I wonder why they want to pretend that this previous telenovela didn't exist? Confusing!

Yeah, I know; I posted that article in the Eva Luna synopsis thread a couple weeks ago. I've been trying to figure out what their distinction is.

Gloria don't worry about getting recaps up on Saturday, mine are regularly up Sunday afternoon/evening. I feel that as long as they are up a full day before the next episode airs, then it's all good.

Chris- To answer your Dinero recapper question. I'm doing two recaps right now (Dinero and Verdad), so I'm looking forward to being back down to one. I think Judy needs something earlier in the evenings, so she's taking a break. Melinama and Private 057 were already pressed for time and splitting duties on one day. Recapper Amy actually left us because she moved, got a new job and started school, and Hombre and Carlos were kind enough to jump in last minute to split her day. And I know Pata has a crazy work schedule as I've switched with her many times to help her out. Plus for much of this novela we recapped two hours worth (when Salvage was moved to midnight). All this is to say that the Dinero recappers are already a busy group and may be looking for some down time. :) I'll make a plea over on the Dinero line today however.

That explains a lot - I didn't realize Dinero was a second job for most of you!

Melinama, loved your statistics: "According to telenovelas, 1/4 of Mexicans experience amnesia, and half are not the children of the parents who raise them." Best chuckle I've had today.
La Paloma

ok if noone else has volunteered, I can take thursday recaps.
btw, if anyone recognized them, the lady who plays matilde, Eva's aunt, is an older actress from Puerto Rico, her name is Sonya Noemi Gonzalez (shows Sonia Noemi as her name in the credits) and Don Julio (Jorge Lavat) I remember from way back in 'Los hermanos Coraje', he played one of the 3 brothers. Did they say in El gordo y la flaca that the house they are using is actually his property or were they referring to it being his in the novela story?

Hurrah Marta, thanks for joining the team!!
