La Fea Más Bella #37-38 10/7/10 Commercial success.

Read Kim's original recap. Note, that recap covers Caps 36B – 38. Cap 37 starts at the section, “Missing Recap 18: Troubles brewing.” If you don’t want to read ahead, stop at the section, “Missing Recap 19: Ariel spreads his sunshine.” That begins Cap 38.

Capitulo 37

1. Fernando accuses Lety of having someone else working for FI, but Lety dodges.

2. Marcia feels bad for Lola, but Alicia thinks she deserves it. Ali says that in that case Paula should be fired for taking Ali’s novio. Marcia later warns Paula that the next time she messes with an executive, she’s canned.

3. Various scenes with Jazmín. I’ll ignore almost all Jazmín scenes and most scenes with the cuartel alone. Note that Paula pays more attention to Saimon when Saimon takes an interest in Jazmín.

4. Alicia complains to Marcia about Omar, and Marcia says, “I told you so.” Ali says Lety acted like the owner and president of the company while she and the boys were away.

5. Fernando asks Lety how FI can have so much money, and why she always refers to FI as “we.” She admits she hired Tomás to invest the capital, but she flatly denies that he knows anything about the Guarantee, or that FI might lien Conceptos.

6. Tom tells Lety that the capital was Fernando’s but the growth is thanks to their work. Lety shows Tom the Guarantee. He says she’s cheating the bank. Lety says it’s legal, and she isn’t about to abandon Fernando.

7. Marcia asks Fernando, “What if I told Ariel that Conceptos has no work?” Fernando sounds like he’s joking, but he’s not. (Although they get the giggles.) He says, “I’d cancel the wedding. Did you expect me to say that your love is all that matters? No. You help me at work, and I do you the favor of marrying you.” She promises her support, as long is he doesn’t do anything crazy.

8. Luigi tells Alicia that Conceptos has no work, and Alicia tells Ariel. He thinks this time he’ll get the presidency from Fernando for sure.

Capitulo 38

Read Kim's original recap. Note, that recap covers Caps 36B – 38. Cap 38 starts at the section, “Missing Recap 19: Ariel spreads his sunshine.” Read to the end of the recap.

1. Luigi presents the commercials, and the clients love them. Ariel demands to know how many projects Conceptos has lined up.

2. Ariel demands the reports from Lety. See transcript. Lety mops the floor with Ariel.

3. Marta wears a cheap knock-off of Alicia’s designer dress to torment her. The executives get a good laugh at Alicia’s expense.

4. Juana reads Lety’s future from her seashells. I posted a rough transcript as a response to Kim’s recap back in 2007; you can read it there.

5. Lety fantasizes that it’s her wedding with Fernando.

6. Several days later, they still haven’t heard from any clients in response to the bodywash commercial. Fernando tells Marcia to call a committee meeting. He’s ready to turn the presidency over to Ariel. Alicia informs them that Bella Life (BL) wants them to produce their international commercials.

7. In the meeting with Ricky Armstrong, Luigi says the BL contract will be for 11.8 million DOLLARS.

Spanish Lesson. Ariel vs. Lety.
A: I need the last financial report. Why are you looking at me that way? If you say you don’t have it, that would be hard to believe since I know you have all the information for the company.
L: Did you ask Fernando’s permission?
A: Me? Ask permission from Fernando? Tell me something. Do you forget that I’m a stockholder and member of the committee? And that I have the right to review the status of the money I have invested in this company?
L: No, I don’t forget that. But neither do I forget the orders Don Fernando gave me. If he does not authorize me, I cannot give you that information.
A: Fine. My orders carry as much weight, or more, than Fernando’s orders. As a member of the committee, I demand the report.
L: In that case, would you permit me to call Don Fernando for permission?
A: Are you not recognizing my authority?
L: No, but neither can I un-recognizing the authority of Don Fernando, president of the company and my immediate supervisor.
A: Fine. then don’t give me the report. Simply give me a quick sketch of the income and expenditures from the past month. You’re the processor of the information. Go ahead. I’m listening.
L: In this case I’m the withholder of the information. They hired a woman, not a processor.
A: Fine. Sit down. I know that since you’re hiding so many things, it means the company is losing a lot of money. You and I know very well that Fernando cannot afford that luxury. Because he will not reach his goal, and he will hand the presidency over to me. You know that very well, right? And I imagine you want to work here well into the future, verdad?
L: Yes, sir.
A: In that case, decide whose side you’re on. When I’m president, I’ll need someone with your skills. You can be on my team. Lety (puts his claw on her shoulder), assure your future. Give me the report.
Lety stands, and transforms into Super Lety. Don Ariel, with all due respect, I am certain DF will accomplish his goals.
A: You are sadly mistaken. You’re not as smart as I thought. You have more optimism than brains.
L: I have more loyalty than brains, Tutz.
A: You’re willing to be ruined with Fernando. Because when he fails, you will be thrown out of here in disgrace. And neither I nor anyone else here will give you job references. Your loyalty can kill you.
L: If things turn out that way, I’ll accept the consequences. DF didn’t hire me to safeguard my position in this company, but to serve him. And that’s what I promised to do.
A: Do you have a boyfriend? (no) That’s why you don’t know anything about loyalty, much less faithfulness.

Hi Paula thanks again for all your work. I really don't enjoy all the Cartel scenes and especially the whole Lola/ Jazmin scenes. It was hard to watch those today so I did alot of recording with comercials and not even paying attention. So glad you didn't dwell on them either. I think Paula is just mean to Simon.

Your Spanish lesson today was great. It's fun to watch Lety buffalo him.

I forgot to say thanks to Kim for the orignal recaps. They are fun to read.

Carrie L, I saw your post on yesterday's board. Welcome! I look forward to your input. FYI, since Fea is bursting with foreshadows but we can't post spoilers here, I created a Twitter Page for Fea Foreshadows. You can post any you spot over there, and read those others find. I'm catching a lot more, this time. I also made a web page list of foreshadows, to keep them all in one place.

EVERYONE: I'm trying to describe the financial transactions in a reasonable level of detail. If I describe too much, it gets boring. But if you have a question about something I don't cover, speak up now. If you wait until later, I'll forget the details. Te lo prometo.

When Lety runs into Ariel in the Vortex, she asks rhetorically, "Why do I always run into you?" I think the question has an answer. It's because Lety is Ariel's obstacle. She stands in the way of him taking the presidency. She's already foiled his plans many times. So of course if she's standing in his path (figuratively), they're going to run into each other (literally).

Tomás’s investments have already earned a 70% return in this short time. If Fernando’s goal is to double Conceptos’ profits, he should just shut the doors, send the employees home, and hire Tomás to invest the company’s money!

Marcia is pathetic. She suspects that Fern proposed only to get her vote. She knows he cheats on her all the time. And now he’s made clear that to him, she’s more of a business asset than “the love of his life.” Yet she hungrily accepts all of it. Pathetic!

How the heck is Tomás making so much money? And how can I hire him to be my financial advisor? And how is in invested in something that is gaining this much value yet FI still has liquid cash to loan to Conceptos?

Thank you Paula. I have to say the cartel is as annoying now as it was when the show was first on.
I never liked Ariel and now happily skip his scenes.
I wish I had caught the first rerun but didn't search for LaFea until last week.
I'm a couple shows behind in my watching but I'm working hard to catch up.
Thanks too for the links and all your hard work!

Carrie L.

Paula, you're doing a terrific job of pulling this all together. I was out and forgot to turn on the recorder again before I left the house. Saw part of the second hour and enjoyed the heavy set cuartel member showing up in a cheap knockoff of Alicia's dress. And especially loved the way Fernando played it up. There's always a fun little nugget in every show even if the cuartel's antics do sometimes get annoying. And I always love Irmita's little dichos.

Julia, re: Tom's return on investment? In this case, just tighten your beanie. Judy, I hope you got to see Lety vs. Ariel. I love that scene! Carrie, about the cuartel, that's why the Good Lord made Fast Forward.

Carrie, I like what Ariel adds to the show. He's not a senseless villian like Crabiela in FELS or Gonzo in MEPS. If he were simply evil, he would undermine the company's business (e.g. turn clients away) to make Fern fail. He's using dishonest means to get the presidency, but Fern is using dishonest means to keep it. He's worried that Fern is squandering Ariel's inheritance, and he's right! I hate his methods, but I can't begrudge him his goals. And I just LOVE how, every time he attacks Lety, she comes out on top!

Judy, you mentioned Irmita's dichos. I loved when she told Jaz, Mucho canto y nada de ópera. I think (someone correct me?) it’s a play on words between ópera and obra (work, as in, a work of art, or the works of Shakespeare). So she’s saying, Lots of singing, and it's not opera / you’re not getting any work done.

Another double meaning (I think). Lety goes to Reception to call Tomás. Paula says, “I caught you! Te viniste hablarle escondida a tu galán!” I THINK the “a” can have two meanings. ‘You came to talk in hiding WITH or FROM your galán.’ IOW Paula’s statement could refer to Lety’s galán as either Tomás or Fernando. Marta, do I have that right?

Within an hour after Fernando signs the guarantee, Lety tells him a boldfaced lie, saying Tom knows nothing about the guarantee or the potential embargo. Only this morning, Fernando corrupted her absolute morals, to get her to accept the embargo. Already those corrupted morals are being used against him; she’s telling him direct lies.

Paula, I like your explanation of why Netty and Ariel always run into each other. I noticed that tonight and thought, "Oh, it's really funny because she irritates Ariel so much", but your explanation takes it to a whole new level.

I LOVED the conversation where Lety bested Ariel. Thank you for translating it.

I LOVE the way everyone is fed up with Alicia. I used to feel kind of sorry for her; poor girl, out of money and doesn't know what to do, etc., but if she's still spending her money on frivolities and snobbiness and whining about her lack of utilities and trying to take advantage of Marcia, I have no sympathy. Very amusing how everyone raved about the knockoff outfit. Also very amusing how Alicia thinks she is so upscale when she always looks so CHEAP.

Good point Julia! Alicia does always look quite trashy, maybe because her clothes are two sizes too small. Meanwhile, whenever the club de las feas spiff up even a little they look dee-fine (as Luigi would say).

I was glad to see Paula Maria get jealous last night. She always laughs and has a good time when she's with Saimon, so why doesn't she open her eyes and see what a catch he his? I think I have a bit of a crush on him; I love the way he dances wherever he goes.

Marcia asks Fernando, “What if I told Ariel that Conceptos has no work?” Fernando sounds like he’s joking, but he’s not. (Although they get the giggles.) He says, “I’d cancel the wedding. Did you expect me to say that your love is all that matters? No. You help me at work, and I do you the favor of marrying you.” She promises her support, as long is he doesn’t do anything crazy.

this whole scene was totally transformed between BLF and LFMB. the dialogue was almost identical, but the tones and overall 'color' of the scene was transformed from a very serious argument/passional meeting to an almost joke/comical conversation... but like you said Paula, he really meant it and I am pretty sure Marcia knew that.

regarding Paula Maria's comment to Lety when she was on the phone with Tomas, PM knew Lety was talking to Tomas, remember Lety keeps denying there is actually something between her and Tomas, that Tomas is her platonic love, so in Paula Maria's mind, the cat is out of the hat, there actually IS something between them. I seriously doubt any of the cuartel seriously think there COULD be anything between Lety and Fernando, especially given the history with Mireya.

if anyone is interested, here is the 'darker' scene in BLF at Marcela's apt... a note: Armando in BLF here is drinking heavily already (the Armando/Fernando drinking was removed from LFMB, as far as I can tell, at least for now...)
Arm gets to Marce’s apt…
Marce: Ah! So you were interested to see what I brought!
Arm: Yes, of course, that is why I came.
Marce: Love, what would happen if I called Daniel and your parents and told them everything that happened with the collection and the low sales levels we had? What consequences would that bring?
Arm: (kiss) If you do that, Marcela, I will cancel our marriage… Or what did you think I would respond? Huh? You want me to get into the lion’s mouth and keep quiet? (She is in shock) Ah? Or you wanted a romantic response? Ah? That I get close to you (hugs her sort of rudely), to take you in my arms and tell you ‘my love, you can do whatever you want with me, because our love and our marriage are above the company’s problems.’ You wanted that? Forget it, Marcela! (goes to the bar to serve himself a drink) You will understand something! That you help me in the company! Ok? You help me with the company, and I will do you the FAVOR… of marrying you!
Marce: JA!! .. ja.. ja
Arm: I will tell you something else. I could care less what you bought (for the wedding or the apartment). I did not come for that.
Marce: Oh yeah? You could care less? Then what did you come for? To threaten me?
Arm: THAT I could have done over the phone. But no. I came because I have spent 20 days without you. And I can’t take it anymore. I can’t take it. (grabs her by her neck, violently) (smooch) Look, Marcela. You can ask for my head as President. You and I might not ever get married. But that is not important now. Tonight there won’t be any saving you from me. (Smooching)
Marce: .. hmmmm I wanted to do it since the office…
Arm: Why didn’t you?
(he slams her on the table.. ?? rough smooching continues..)
Marce: I would not be capable of doing something you did not want. I would be incapable of asking for your head. Or of putting you at war with Daniel. You did many things without my knowledge. You alienated me from all this! You preferred Betty. But I still believe in you.
Arm: (my) Love, I won’t let you down.
Marce: I will keep quiet. And I will wait until the next collection. But I want you to have one thing clear.
Arm: What?
Marce: I am with you unconditionally. As long as you don’t do any more crazy things with the company. Is that clear? Swear it to me.
Arm: I swear that I won’t do any more crazy things with the company. (they keep at it)

I agree, Marta. VERY intense scene in BLF. Much darker. In fact, BLF is much darker in general. And he takes much longer to warm up to Betty, whereas in Fernando we can already see a strong affection. Non-romantic, but very affectionate. It's interesting that they can take the same dialog (LFMB and BLF are almost identical until #77) and spin it so differently.

Regarding Lety's secret phone call to Tom. Let me clarify what I meant. Not what PAULA thought, but the reality. Paula thought that Lety was hiding the phonecon WITH her galán. In reality, Lety was hiding the phonecon FROM her galán. I think the writer wrote the sentence to carry both meanings, as an inside joke. Like when Alicia said, "Lety acted like the owner of the company" when Lety actually has in her hands the documents that can make her owner of the company. So my question: could Lety's sentence be read both ways?

Betty tells Armando 'if he had cut me apart I would not have given him any info'... In LFMB Lety tells Fernando 'even if he had tortured me, I would not have given him the info'... (this is why Marcial says 'I bet!' and leaves in a huff, because she hears how far Lety would go for Fernando).
On the dresses plotline...
since Patty was especially obnoxious with Martha about her outfit and accessories, the cuartel all concluded in the ladies room that 'Alicia had dug her own grave' and that it was the perfect moment to bring Marta's 'twin dress' to match Alicia's.
I pick up the BLF version when Daniel and Armando argue outside pres office door, before Daniel/Ariel turns around and sees the two women in the same dress... (DV = Ariel, Bertha = Marta, Patricia = Alicia, Marce = marcia)

DV: (turns around and sees Patty and Bertha stepping aside behind her) Are you twins or do you buy your clothing at the same place?

Pat: AARRGGGHHH!!! Where did you get that dress from??
Bert: I got it on a promotion!! Two for fifty (I guess fifty thousand pesos) For the daily use…
Pat: That is a lie!! This morning you came in with another dress! That one does not look good on you!! You look like a clown! IT does not fit you well!! And that dress is a cheap copy of THIS dress!!
Bert: Ah yeah? You don’t say!! Now you won’t be able to criticize me because I am wearing the same dress as you! We have the same taste! If you want, I will give you the address of the store. They have all the styles you like… and know what?? At wonderful prices… (Swings her hair at Patty just as Patty uses to do it to her)
(Betty tells Armando what DV came to ask her… .)
Arm: Did you give him any information? Did you give him any document?
Bet: NO, Doctor! Even if he had cut me apart alive, I would not have given him anything!
Marce: Hah! I don’t doubt it.

(later in the board room... Armando has asked Patricia to bring something, Mario has asked Sandra to bring some sales report to him so Bertha gets the report from Sandra to bring to the guys.)
Arm: (he is looking down at a paper in his hands) Patricia, do me a favor. Mario and I will stay all night working, so I want you to order dinner for us… and also for Beatriz! I want a coffee pot, wa… (freezes momentarily because he just spotted Bertha behind Patsy with same dress and doing same moves with her hair as Patsy)… with water, juices, sodas, etc… everything related to... ca... cafeteria! (holding his giggles with difficulty)
Mario: I am a bit tired maybe? … I am beginning to see double? (Armando is nervously clicking his pen on and off, trying to hold the laughter, and so is Marcela on the other side of Patry)
Patri: Alright, Armando… (turns around and has a swallowed scream at seeing Bertha behind her) What are you doing here??
Bert: I came to give a report to Doctor Calderon!
Arm: Bertha, you look very chic. That dress is very pretty, hear?
Bert: Thank you Doctor.
Marce: Yes, Bertha, I had not seen that dress in you. IT is very very pretty… ahhh!! Ahh! But they are identical! Did you buy it in the same place as Patricia?? (Armando is really struggling now trying not to crack up in laughter)
Patri: Forget it!! This is a 'Bettina Spitz' (famous designer whom we see later in BLF)!! That is a cheap copy!!
Bert: Doctora, I bought it in a promotion! The deal was… two for fifty, three for sixty, four for seventy five, (Marce is laughing covering with her mouth, Armando is covering his face too, with his head down bouncing it up and down, laughing quietly.) One big basket, you know… you can imagine the battles I had to fight to get this one…
Marcela laughs, Patri leaves offended..
Bertha goes to give the report to Mario.. : Excuse me Doctor.
(we hear Armando explode in laughter)
Mario: Thank you Patty.
Arm: Paty, turn around…
Marce: Ay, no, don’t be mean with her.
Arm: You enjoyed that as much! Tell me something! If Bertha had arrived with your dress, what would you have done? How would you have felt?
Marce: I.. first I would have fired her, then I would burn the dress. But Patri is in no position to do that. I will see you in the apartment. C’iao.
(later on their way to the elevator to leave for the day Bertha tells the cuartel the funny success of the moment)
Bertha: Don Mario said… Ay, I think I am seeing double!... (they go by Patri and Marce, and as Bertha is about to get in the elevator…) See you tomorrow, Patty.
Patry: Marcela, that was no coincidence. That woman came to work dressed with something else! And of course she got that dress made to bother me.
Marce: Ay, look, know what? ‘PARE DE SUFRIR”!
Patry: That is so easy for you! IF it were you, you would have taken this dress and thrown it out and that is that! But for me this is a trauma!! Marcela! That woman and I cannot keep coming to work dressed the same way!! Because of course for her that is a step up!! But for me it is a tragedy!! Marcela, now I am really beginning to feel the poverty!!
Marce: here, here… lets see what we can do….

Marta, I got thinking about your thoughtful offer to help me with these summaries. I thought of something that would really help. Do you think you could write the "Spanish Lessons" (the transcriptions)? Those always take the biggest chunk of time for me, and you're such an old pro at them. I've considered dropping them because of the time burden, but some of the conversations are so rich (like Ariel vs. Lety) that I can't bear to skip them. If you could pick up that part of the load, that would be a big help to me.

There wouldn't be one every day. Many days, there is just no dialog worthy of posting here. And I would tell you what section I had in mind. I would let you know ahead of time, at least a day before the episode airs.

Como te parece?

thats fine, i am about 6 dvds ahead of LFMB (moon convers. in car) right now in my translations to english so I would just pick the scene up from my files. Just tell me which scene you want me to copy here for each ep.

please let me know if I am annoying anyone with the BLF scene cut-outs... i am not intending to take over this site or take the focus away from LFMB. just wanted to show some comparison as to why Paula and I say this version is lighter, funnier and easier on the psych.

GREAT! That would be a huge help. Thank you!

Do I remember something, that you don't check your e-mail until after work? iow, if I send you an e-mail, should I give you a heads-up here on the board?

if you let me know which scene during the day I can check my email before going home so I know which one i should check the lfmb wording vs my blf file. then I would post it the next morning.

two clarifications from summaries:
what the 'shells' said for Lety this time: that her intimate life and her work life will be stirred by some huge event... that a big dream of Lety's will come true but it will come true in the midst of a huge storm, Lety asks if it has to do with her work life or intimate life, Juana says it is confusing because they both (her intimate and work life) look to be very mixed together...

and the conversation Lety and Simon had upon her return from the Comidilla:
Lety tells Simon that she envies his liberty to talk about his feelings for PM and Jazmin. Simon says he is very expressive about that and sees no problem in expressing his true feelings... then Lety asks would he say the same if he was having feelings for Lopez or for Luigi, and that is when they laugh.

and about the problem Lety was commenting to the cuartel about and the call from Fernando's office:
well, since the Benny video took away all their new business, and their clients from earlier work are not paying them their fees, they have a major cash flow issue. Lety is nervous that none of the banks will extend their credit line to get money for payroll or operations. So Lety was asking Marta to get her the latest bank account reports... when she gets to Fernando's office, he tells her they have been getting calls from the banks because they are late in their own payments. Lety says she will speak to the manager of the bank... when she gets on the phone with him (after Fernando forces Alicia to pass the call to Lety at his desk) Lety has to promise the bank manager they will be making their payments in the next 10 days or so. So when Lety hangs up Fernando asks her if those dates she is promising the banks are realistic. She says they HAVE TO BE so lets hope the body shampoo commercials begin to bring in business and money right away.

if anyone is interested, here is the youtube clip of the 'twin dresses' in BLF.

Carrie

I had to laugh with your comments about the cuartel being just as annoying this time around as they were at the first. I so totally agree, they are annoying on every level, loud and they never do a lick of work. With Fern's lack of management skills and a staff that spends more time making fun of people and eating then do working no wonder Conceptos is in trouble.

Marta, I just e-mailed you the Spanish Lesson section for MONDAY's show. Thanks!

Decie girl, thanks for joining the discussion. Take heart. We'll have a lot of cuartel on today's show yet, but almost none on Monday. These past few days, since Jazmín arrived, are just a particularly annoying cuartel section. Worse than most.
