La Fea Más Bella #39-40 10/8/10 Wardrobe Dysfunction

Read Kim's original recap, starting at the top, the section called “Missing Recap 21: Panama is famous for hats - not cameras.” That recap covers Caps 39 to 42. If you don’t want to read ahead, stop at Section 22. That marks the beginning of Cap 40. Then come back here to discuss it..

Capitulo 39

1. The executives celebrate the news about the commercials. Lety worries that it’s still not enough to reach Fernando’s goals. With so many commercials, they decide to buy a 35mm camera, not rent.

2. The cuartel sets up Saimon to take Jazmín out, to get her away from Efren.

3. FI hires Erasmo as its accountant. Pop asks why Fernando set up FI. He speculates that a company would do that to shelter its capital from creditors.

4. Marcia is proud of Fernando, that he was willing to consider surrendering the presidency to Ariel, and that he’s stopped committing locuras.

5. Ali tells Ariel she wants to stop spying for him. No dice. Ali throws away her favorite dress because Marta wore a copy.

6. Fern and Lety work out Bella Life contract details with Ricky Armstrong.

7. Omar found a low-priced source for the 35mm camera. It’s in Panama, so Fern and Lety worry that it’s contraband. Lety STRONGLY objects because it’s too good to be true, but they ignore her objections. They tell everyone the vendor is in New York.

8. Alicia says her problem is self esteem because Fernando only lets her do simple tasks. She wants to be Marcia’s production assistant instead.

9. Luigi tells Fernando that the Queen of the Night fiesta is tonight. Fern tries to wriggle out, but Luigi says if you don’t do it, you can forget about the Bella Life contract.

Capitulo 40

Read Kim's original recap, starting at Section 22, “Saimon's excellent lunch hour.” That recap covers Caps 39 to 42. If you don’t want to read ahead, stop at Section 23. That marks the beginning of Cap 41. Then come back here to discuss it..

1. Saimon plans to take Jazmín to lunch. Lola gets Marta to anonymously tip off Efren, so he’ll see that Jaz cheats on him. Saimon takes Jaz somewhere else, so Lola’s plot fails.

2. Fernando will eat lunch at the office. Lety fantasizes that they have a romantic lunch together.

3. Lety tries yet again to dissuade Fernando from buying from Panama.

4. Marcia counsels Lola to stop being such a shrew, and prove herself the superior person in the situation.

5. Marcia tells Ali she has no dignity. Ali got paid, so Marcia asks Ali to repay her latest loan. Alicia is indignant – “You don’t need it; you’re rich!” Marcia says she doesn’t work hard so she can give away money to irresponsible friends.

6. The banker balks at giving Fernando a $2M loan for a foreign transaction. He wants a surety bond against the commercials (I think that’s in conflict with Lety’s Guarantee). Fernando refuses, so the banker settles for a blank promissory note.

7. Fernando goes to the studio where Luigi’s amigoítas are going to prepare him for the transvestite ball.

Comments:
Take heart. We have endured the worst of the Lola/Jazmín scenes. She will still bestow her annoyingness upon us, but not five straight caps of concentrated Jazmín blither.

Y’know, I stand in awe of Fernando Gaitán who wrote Fea. His plot development is magnificent. His character development .. nobody else compares. But I think we’ve found one thing the maestro does poorly – subplots. Even in the Colombian original. For me, if a subplot doesn’t involve Fernando or Lety, or Alicia actually, it’s just worthless blither. I couldn’t care less. In other novelas, at least to some degree, I care about the subplots.

And finally, a heads up. Monday we will get to see something rarely witnessed by mere mortals. Jaime Camil’s calves. Amazing.

Thank you Paula! Any day with any Camil in it is a great day. I like Lola but the Jazmin subplot gets a little weary. I'm still amazed at how Alicia keeps everything covered and in the right place. Some kind of sticky tape maybe?

I thought of another song for this period. Especially in light of what Lety wrote in her diary, “I’m the most important woman in his life, but to him I don’t exist as a woman. He’s given up on finding the love of his life; if only he realized I’m here. It would take a miracle for him to realize it.”

The song is Going Out of My Head. Significant lyrics:
I see you each morning but you just walk past me
you don't even know that I exist.

I must think of a way into your heart.
There's no reason why my being shy should keep us apart.

Looking forward to seeing Camil in that slinky pink gown Paula. On the Jazmin subplot, that's a painful one. I hate seeing Lola humiliated and hurt like that.

Both Kim's recap and my scenes list skipped most of the Jazmín stuff. Let me know if there's anything you're dying to know.

When Fernando complained about the dress, Rulli said, "Did you expect to go as Peter Pan?" Fern answers, "Maybe Peter Pan, but not Tinkerbell." Camil starred on stage in Peter Pan as Captain Hook. Remember the mustache picture from earlier this week?

Hi Paula, I did something I have not done yet when writing this to disk. I totaly cut out the entire Jazmin scenes and majority of the cartel scenes.

This would be my perfect cast for LFMB. I would blend some from YSB.
I would keep Fernado and Lety but would ditch the entire cartel for the YSB cartel except for Irmita. I would also keep Simon, but trade the Marcies and trade Alici for Patty. I would also keep Omar but trade Ariel for the Daniel character. I would get rid of the Annaleticia character all together. I would keep Fernadoes parents as well as Lety's, but would trade the Lopez charater. The Jazmin character doesn't matter because I always fast forward. And I would dump all the kids. That would be the perfect cast for me. Anyway just wishing outloud.

Thanks again, and also thanks to Kim for the original reccap and Martaivett for all the wonderful quotes and insights from the previous recap. I love the comparison's. When YSB was on TF I had taped all of them as well.

Pata, what a fun topic for the weekend! Especially since both cap's were pretty lame.

I agree with almost all your "dream team" choices. Except I think I'd keep Lopez over Guitierrez. And I might take Hermes over Erasmo. He was pretty entertaining. But not Mama Julieta. She's fabulous! MamaJ MUST stay! As for the kids, did you see Tontas? Those kids were cool, and Rocío was sensational. Can we bring them in? One you missed. Tomás v. Nicolás. Who would you pick?

The Nick Thomas character is difficult one. There are things that I really enjoy about both of them and some annoying as well. The Nick character is a bit more jumpy and strange but really funny. Thomas is nerdy but very sweet with Letty. It's a tough one. I agree about the Julietta character but I also like Erazmo. He seems more caring.

Thanks for explaining that Peter Pan quip, Paula. Those are the little details we miss when we don't have your extended knowledge of Camil's work. Marvelous, amiga.

DON'T MISS MONDAY!!!
Whatever you do, don't miss Monday! #42 is one of my 10 favorite cap's. Obviously we'll see that fuschia dress put to good use, but Monday's second cap is better. And good news! No Jazmín, no cuartel. Well, virtually none.

Judy, you said, "your extended knowledge of Camil's work." What a graceful way of putting that! jiji.

Those of you who haven't seen Fea before, do you feel brave enough to suggest possible directions the plot could go from here?

And Fea veterans, here's one for you. Fea breaks many novela conventions. Where would the plot go if this were a typical novela? e.g., as Beckster posted during the original run, "Poor Lety would be forced to walk in the rain carrying a really Feo kid (Feo cause it was switched at birth, by Marcia who happened to have a kid at exactly the same time).

Ah that Beckster! Would love to see her reappear one day on CarayCaray. Truly a unique lady.

Can you imagine the job she'd do on STuD! Yikes...

Thanks, Paula and Kim. Watching 2 episodes a day is pretty intense but I do like the continuity and concentration.

Thanks for letting us know the Cuartel/Lola/Jasmin scenes may lessen in frequency. Otherwise it's mute time. I suppose the leads need time off so they can learn their lines for the next shoot so we are left with so much filler. I think a lot of it was, mercifullly, missing from the dvd.

Now Fernie is a beautiful guy but as a gal? I missed the original showing so this will be fun.

GinCA

GinC, regarding Fernando in drag, just remember, Camil never does anything halfway!

You mentioned the leads need some off-camera time. Here's some trivia. The casts of Mexican TNs work 14-15 hour days, seven days per week. And Fea ran for 14 months. Can you imagine? Camil got one day off per week by contract, but that's because Televisa doesn't own him. The rest, every day. They say Angelica got sick a lot toward the end because your body just can't take that abuse.

And about the condensed DVD. Yes, they cut out most of the cuartel. But for me, they cut the soul out of the novela. They chopped 300 hours down to 11.5. You get all the action and none of the emotion. What good is a melodrama with no emotion?

That work schedule is just shocking Paula. But I believe it. I seem to remember Ferro saying that when his wife worked in a Mexican bank, the boss wouldn't let anybody take time off for lunch. They had to make it through without food until they staggered out after work.

And no wonder marriages and romances break up on that filming schedule! Jeez!

That is inhumane. I would get sick if I did that for one week, never mind months and months. I hope they at least get nap breaks on set while they're waiting to do scenes. I wonder why they don't just start shooting further ahead of the show airing so they can relax the schedule a bit.

I noticed Lety casually patted Fernando's arm when they were in the conference room. Initiating contact?! This is a very sloooooowly building relationship.

Every time Alicia goes on about her six semesters of finance I want Marcia to point out to her that her personal life demonstrates her complete inadequacy at financial planning. Not to mention that she has no strategic business skills, burning one of the few bridges she has left (her friendship with Marcia) with her sense of entitlement to Marcia's money.

The wood figure had its arms bent up over its head. It looked like some celebratory "raisin' the roof" dancing when they had just gotten the Bella Life contract, but over the course of the episodes as they discussed their continuing financial struggles and questionable purchasing decisions it looked like it was trying to keep the sky from falling.

Thanks Paula and others for the fun recap and comments. I'm really looking forward to Fernando's drag night, should be a hoot. As you say, Camil never does anything half way!

Marcia seemed more human in these episodes. I liked how she scolded Alicia and how she counseled Lola.

I happened to catch an episode of Tontas on Friday night (while sitting in a hotel room). Yes, the kids in that show were phenomenal. It also struck me that one of the things about that TN that I didn't care for was that I couldn't identify with the heroine at all. On the other hand, I can absolutely identify with Lety on several different levels. Her character is very approachable and quite "real" even though this is kind of a slaptstick TN.

Yes, Sylvia, that was what made Tontas so awful. You know something's wrong when you are hoping that the heroine gets eaten by the alligators! And the girl that played Santiago's little daughter was so good, Camil would let her improvise (unheard of with child actors), and then he'd reel her back in. It was amazing.

Julia, good interpretation of the wooden figure. Works for me! I'm really not visually oriented (I'm all verbal; are you surprised?). So I feel unable to figure out what "Woody" is telling us, although I am sure he's saying SOMETHING. Thank you for interpreting for me.

Why is the TN filming schedule so brutal? In Mexico, it's the other Golden Rule: Them's what's got the gold make the rules! Camil has cited that as the reason he won't do any more TN's in Mexico. Whereas he shot his last TN, LEP, in Argentina, where labor laws guarantee them days off.
