La Verdad Oculta #059: A rose by any other name is sweet, but not legal

Abelardo astounds "Mario" with the news that Dora has fled the house! They both bemoan the loss of her potential testimony and the whereabouts of her letter. At Roberto's, he explains to Adolfo who Susana is and his plan to infiltrate Mario's affairs through her to kill him again.

Roberto relates distractedly Mario's odd behavior; how Mario once bodily tossed Roberto out -- but yesterday seemed not to recognize him. Adolfo listens intently to obviously confounded Roberto, who anguishes again he saw Mario's burning body; and Adolfo agrees something odd is going on.

At the AFI, Leonardo confides to Ramón he believes all the shadows in Mario's office served to hide his reactions rather than alleviate a migraine. Though Mario denied knowing Márta, her name made him nervous; at least Adolfo didn't deny he knew her, although he was also nervous, he adds.

Leonardo tries to reach Gabriela to ask about Santiago, but only reaches Bertha -- who is tickled to plan to meet him for lunch the next day to discuss what's going on with her uncle. Outside Mario's office, Abelardo and Santiago fret that Dora has no relatives and no friends to flee to.

Encountering Gabriela, Julieta and David entering, Santiago cheerily lies to them that Santiago called from Zacatecas and all is well. David follows a pensive Gabriela upstairs, who confides she doesn't buy the excuses given her why Leonardo visited Mario; David puts her off, but she is not mollified.

David finds Santiago to confide Gabriela's suspicions and ask that he phone Leonardo and they all get their story straight about the ostensible convention in case she asks. Meanwhile, Roberto takes Susana for her day off, and she nearly spills everything she knows to him about the tunnel house, how they entered, the wigs, and Mario's odd behavior.

Importantly, she reveals that the tunnel likely emerges into Mario's bed chamber. Up in her bedroom suite, a distraught Gabriela confides to Julieta she feels wretched thinking her inquiries to Leonardo about Márta brought the police down on Mario. And now she can't tell David, in case Márta is his mother.

Julieta reassures her sister she's blameless that Adolfo revealed David is adopted and suggests Gabriela just talk to Mario. Down in his office, "Mario" phones Leonardo, and he counsels "Mario" against worrying over Adolfo's blackmail.

Hanging up, when Santiago frets Leonardo will visit again tomorrow, David advises to let him handle it. At Roberto's, to complete blurting everything she knows, lonely Susana lets Roberto cozy her into explaining about Marcos in jail, the stolen diamonds and his arrest, the shoes, L.A., etc.

But since Adolfo earlier refused to put Roberto on his need-to-know list, Roberto just thinks the stories are nuts and can't connect them so far. Across the way at Juan José's, everybody's in a funk: Caramelo for missing Elsa and Juan José for his break-up with Alejandra.

After Caramelo retires, Juan José tearfully mourns the differences that killed their relationship: he's an ignorant, old-fashioned country boy; and she's a modern, classy, educated woman. Choking up, Juan José laments that no matter how rich they are, they'll always be the same.

When Juan José admits they fought over his accusations about her past lovers, Asunción takes the chance to put in a plug for his favorite, Elsa, who is more suited to them. Juan José reluctantly agrees, wiping the tears away, that she is more like them; but he is unenthused about it.

That night at the mansion, Gabriela presses David again with her suspicions that something's happened -- and he's not telling her why Adolfo's being investigated. He claims not to know and tries to reassure her that in a month the contract with him with be over.

At a club, Alejandra with Mina tries to drown her indignation and fury in alcohol over Juan José calling her a slut, despite Mina's observation he didn't actually call her that. Never mind -- the sentiment's the same! Imagine that idiot insulting her over her love life! She's so sorry she ever met him!

Feeling supremely stupid, she admits she sincerely fell for him; now she has no idea how she could have fallen for a guy with such notions about women! The unfortunate thing is they got along so beautifully; that's what hurts so much. So sweet, caring, tender -- and wild! But he's a moron! And men NEVER change, she insists.

At the AFI, Ramón failed to squeeze any more out of the jeweler, and Leonardo instructs him to pull Santiago's marriage license with Márta -- also to look up the daughters' birth certificates and check the family name to see if it's changed. Ramón notes if the name has changed, Gabriela's marriage won't be legal.

David learns from a nervous Abelardo that Dora has, er, taken time off to visit a sick relative, as David bids Julieta and Gabriela goodbye heading off to classes -- and he to the cemetery. Across town at the condo, Carlos unnerves Yolanda grilling her on Leonardo's investigations into "someone," making her jump the gun and suggest "Márta" out of the blue.

So now Carlos is suspicious but can't pester any more out of her, even threatening to ask Adolfo instead. She's about to abscond when Leonardo appears to question her, and Carlos exits himself. Yolanda denies knowing where Santiago went or that Adolfo knows he's Fausto Guillen; she admits she never wanted Adolfo to denounce Santiago, because she's sure Santiago couldn't kill someone.

Yolanda pointedly denies she's in the habit of protecting criminals; and when asked if Márta was a good woman, she pauses before lying that she was. It was an unpremeditated murder, not motivated by robbery, Leonardo observes.

When Leonardo then asks if not Santiago -- who could have killed Márta, Yolanda jumps to her feet denying she knows anything. Yolanda turns with a penetrating look as Leonardo gives her a little friendly advice: talk while you still can.

In her bedroom suite, Gabriela charges Susana with emptying David's suitcase from the hotel; and of course, Susana finds the one remaining L.A. photo, with which she quickly escapes to her room -- to compare her black, platform shoes to the shoes in the picture.

Upon confirming they're identical, Susana pulls the diamonds out of the shoes to hide them in a scarf in her bra, puts the photo and shoes in a shopping bag and phones Roberto to come pick them up. Meanwhile, poor David visits his father's grave with Abelardo at the cemetery.

David speaks from the heart to the man who truly was his father in every meaningful way and vows to make all Mario's plans come to fruition. He calls his father the best man in the world and declares his love, as Mario loved him. Then after bidding Mario rest in peace, David oddly remarks "…see you soon…"

Roberto roars his car up to the corner, where Susana hands him the bag of seemingly extraneous stuff and runs off. Now Roberto has all the information and the evidence, except for the actual diamonds. Inside Mario's office again, David declares to Santiago and Abelardo he intends to have hotel security guard the house now. Adolfo's a criminal and murderer of his father.

There's the contract clause still remaining, and he recognizes the description of Mario's cuff link matches Carlos's ring. Santiago piles on the rap sheet the jewel theft inside Gabriela's shoes, which David hadn't connected yet -- but which now makes sense of Leonardo asking for the photos and Bertha stealing them for Adolfo.

David heads straight upstairs to secure the one remaining photo in his suitcase; but when it has disappeared, rakes Susana over the coals to no avail. Failing that, David accuses the objecting Bertha, threatening her with ejection for the theft -- and turning over her room in search.

Bertha launches herself down into "Mario's" office for backup, making the mistake of insulting Gabriela in the process, losing points with Santiago. She's yelling at the top of her register in indignation, Santiago coming over the desk wagging his finger, when David adds his fury to the mix. Opening his wallet and pulling out cash, David shouts Bertha better come up with the photo -- or stack her duds and scram!

Good evening. :-) Here are the You Tube links for Episode 59:

Part 5

The twists, turns and detours continue in this amazing story. Jeri, you are such a gifted writer, I was hard pressed to narrow down my list of favorite lines: "Alejandra with Mina tries to drown her indignation and fury in alcohol", "Yolanda turns with a penetrating look as Leonardo gives her a little friendly advice: talk while you still can" and "After bidding Mario rest in peace, David oddly remarks "…see you soon…". Yes, utterly confusing. What can that possibly mean??

Roberto possesses an uncanny ability to spot and prey on the weak. No surprise that "lonely Susana" is baring her soul to him. Perhaps the only salvation will be "... since Adolfo earlier refused to put Roberto on his need-to-know list, Roberto just thinks the stories are nuts and can't connect them so far". Most excellent!

Susana is a loose cannon, spilling information and evidence as fast as she can gather it. Is Leonardo's intelligence ("all the shadows in Mario's office served to hide his reactions rather than alleviate a migraine") enough to thwart an inevitable disaster should Adolfo learn the truth?

"Feeling supremely stupid" and with good reason. Actually, Ale and JJ are not as unalike as they might think - they share many qualities: immaturity, stubborness, fiery temper and acid tongue.

Thank you for the marvelous recap Jeri. Sensational.

Diana

Twists, turns and detours is right! This story goes a mile a minute. I do hope Yolanda talks; and I'm concerned about Gabriela's marriage.

With Mario dead, how can they prove Gabriela is his daughter and she can inherit. With David adopted, Bertha will bring suit, I feel sure.

Will they exhume Mario for DNA testing? They don't usually do that on novelas; but I've been wondering if they'll have to.

Thank you for the always very kind and insightful comments, Diana!

Jeri- I just love your fast paced writing. Another impactful episode. This novela just doesn't let up. Susana now has the letter, the shoes, the diamonds AND the photo! And she's partnered up with Roberto and was stupid enough to confide in him- but not stupid enough to confess that she still had most of the diamonds (crafty girl). Thank goodness she didn't hand over the letter to Roberto as well.

I'm not sure if Roberto will share all that he's learned with Adolfo yet. I certainly hope not because together I think they could quickly put together that they might be dealing with a fake Mario. They're already coming pretty close with noticing the difference in attitude and the lack of memory of past events. If Adolfo hears there's a wig and secret passages involved, he might get wise really fast.

I thought it delicious that David threw Bertha out on her a$$. Yes! I she didn't even do the dirty deed this time. Lol!

Two little tidbits that struck me this episode:

1- David also told Mario at the gravesite that he would take care of his daughter, and talk to her about Mario so that she grew to love him as much as he did. That was very sweet. I don't think the see you soon meant anything other than see you in the afterlife (which is long compared to the short life we live on Earth).

2-The girls have been taking classes in their free time and bettering themselves. Gabi is taking computer science classes and driving lessons, and Juli is taking English courses. Yay! JJ needs to get off his whining butt and start improving himself. What's the point of all that money if you're just going to remain an ignorant country bumpkin?

Yeah, I hope David isn't planning any dangerous, rash action -- or anticipating Adolfo murdering him, like he did Mario.

But with him moving the hotel security to cover the house, he thinks there is a risk.

It will be great to see Gabriela driving; she's probably going to be a monster behind the wheel.

Wow. Excellent recap Jeri. So nosy Susana has found the photo and gave it to Roberto as well as the shoes. I wonder will he show it to Adolfo. I was suprised that Dora fled after the letter went missing.

As far as JJ and Elsa being a couple that time has past. She has Mauricio. Additionally, JJ didn't look to enthused about possibly pursuing a relationship with her anyway.

So much is happening you just don't know what's going to come next. That's why I loved this novela.

Such a well written and helpful recap, Jeri, and thanks for the links.

Well, I learned the word peluca from Susana. Her need to confide in Roberto, telling him all the strange and coincidental detaiks surrounding the Genoves family may get her killed. If Adolfo learns from Roberto that Susana had the famous ugly black shoes, he'll know she may have the rest of the diamonds.

It's great that Bertha was kicked out on her a** by David but she'll probably call Adolfo for help and let him know the last photo of the L A trip has disappeared and that she was blamed for it. Of course, she can't tell him what happened to it, though. Again, since Roberto has all the proof on the diamonds (shoes. photo and accomplice Susana,) I guess we just have to wait to see how long it may take Adolfo to learn all the critical info.

Hopefully, J J will think to hire a tutor to guide in his quest to better himself and in the end be more confident with Ale. I really do hope J J does not consider Elsa as more than a friend with all of Asuncion's prodding of Elsa being perfect for J J. But he's in love with Ale, whom I hope somehow learns some lessons on humility.

Love how Leo has everyone ready to have a nervous breakdown....Santiago, Yolanda, Adolfo even David for covering up everything and Gabi out of confusion and guilt in perhaps causing Leo's questioning everyone about Marta's and now thinking Marta may be David's mom.

GinCA

Thank you very much, Jeri!

It's official now - for me LVO is the second best primetime telenovela of the last decade. (After El manantial.) But if I try to look at it more objectively, it's still in the same league with Amor real and Alborada.

Oh, and the title is perfect. :)

Thank you Jeri for another great recap!

Then after bidding Mario rest in peace, David oddly remarks "…see you soon…" Maybe David meant he would see his dad again in Santiago's ruse. Thinking about that, it would be incredibly sad to know that your beloved father is dead, to have to pretend he is not and see his face on a stranger. I don't think David is going to be able to do that for long.

I hope Yolanda does come clean with Leo. I like her. Adolfo has never deserved her loyalty.

I don't see Roberto giving all the information to Adolfo. I think he will keep just enough to himself to have the option of hanging Adolfo with it later.

To our recappers, in the words of a country song. “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool” You all were promoting LVO before LVO was even cool! And yes, it is so dang cool I can’t believe it! Our recapping LVO gals fired up the enthusiasm for this jewel of a midnight novela when no one else was interested. Our reward is as Aribeth just said, perhaps the second best novela of the decade! YES!

With each episode I am more enchanted with the performances of different actors and this time it was Maria Sorti as Yolanda. She was AWESOME, her face said it all! She is a good girl, but unfortunately, she has taken one baby step at a time, denying what her conscience probably told her to do all along the way, and now she is in a proverbial bed with ADOLFO! What a shame! You could see so much of her conflicted emotions on her face! Kudos Maria, you were wonderful in your scenes.

Jere, I loved your quick, clear recap and I needed you this time, for some reason, there were more unclear bits of dialogue....THANKS!

So, if Gabi isn't really Gabi, does that mean she and David have to get married all over again? I guess that means we get a wedding at the end afterall!

It's nice to see them having nice couple time after the rocky start. David's really started to mature. I wish they had shown us more of him taking her mind off things when they both climbed into bed. I noticed the next morning she seemed WAY more relaxed... ;-)

"It's great that Bertha was kicked out on her a** by David" GinCA, I was happy to see David's quick decisive actions and it was too funny when Bertha ran to Fausto/Mario and he gave her a "talkin' to." Viewerville enjoyed that! For those of us who watched Sorti with the handsome WL as Alejandro, it is nice to see a non- flirty galan who isn't distracted by the appearance of the villainess! Alejandro in Sorti always made me a little nervous.

Hello Jeri, excellent recap as usual.Thank you. Twists, turns and detours indeed. Why did Dora feel the need to run away? She wrote the letter and she was a witness. All she has to do is rewrite the letter and confess to our muy intelligent Leo.Is she afraid of Adolfo or of David finding out she is his mother?
David is in a tight spot.He can't openly mourn his dad and he can't tell his wife her natural father died. Wait that means Adolfo killed both her parents whoops.I hope his end includes a guillotine. This man had no problem taking the life of his son's mother. I hate to see JJ so sad. He should also stop putting himself down. Why does he keep referring to himself as ignorant? We did see him reading in jail so he must have some sort of formal education. The rest he can pick up along the way, just like the Gabi and Julieta are doing.
Ah!! Bertha finally gets her first installment. Hope there's more coming her way. She has earned every bit of it.

Hanna

Hanna- Yes and yes. Dora is afraid of Adolfo (big time) AND she is afraid of David's reaction when he finds out she's his mother.

Thanks, Vivi. :-) Sandy, I feel so lucky this show turned out to be excellent.

Aribeth and I did start up the blog -- and thank goodness Vivi joined us, very excited and glad Melinama did not mind having another "Insomniacs Club" -- like CS turned out to be.

But that was really where it started; we EY fans on the CS blog were truly amazed that Univision did something eye popping phenomenal, and decided to show this long-lost novela -- EY's return to Mexican TV after being gone since the 1990's.

CS posters were emailing me and posting that they wanted an LVO blog, and that's how it happened.

There already was a lot of interest in the show before it ever started. And it sure worked out, didn't it.

Thank you so much for the recap Jeri. I think Ale and JJ can work on their issues, they just need to start working on them.

Susana and Roberto's scenes made me a little nervous but I enjoy those two actors together.

I laughed at Bertha. Her approach was always too obvious, she was going to get hers at some point.

Hannah: JJ gives me the impression of having finished secundaria (middle school). Back when he was younger it was mandatory to study until that point, nowadays you have to finish bachillerato (high school). I think he is smart but he is letting his insecurities get to him.

Jarocha

Jarocha, that is great news about compulsory preparatoria; did that just happen? I hadn't heard.

oh, wait, you called it something else...

ok, here's the wiki entry.

"The term preparatoria is most commonly used for institutions that offer a 3-year educational program that "prepares" the student with general knowledge to continue studying at a university. In contrast, the term bachillerato is most often used for institutions that provide vocational training, either in 2 or 3 years, so the graduate can get a job as a skilled worker, for example, an assistant accountant, a bilingual secretary or an electronics technician."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Mexico

Jeri the change has been happening this decade, some states have change their laws first but the federal change didn't happen until yesterday :).

There's little difference between a Bachillerato and a Preparatoria. You can ge into a university with both but of course it's much harder to get in if you don't do the three year period that's usually expected.

I went to a school that was both a Preparatoria and a Bachillerato. I did 2 years of what it's called here "tronco común", the basic subjects: math, chemistry, physics, literature, social sciences, biology, geography, reading and writing workshop, psicology, arts, etc. And at the last year you are sent to a specific area of study: Humanities and Social Sciences, Administrative Science, Exact Science or Biological Sciences.

Then in the afternoons you have to do a specific training. I took Assistant Accountant which I HATED. Some schools keep the training for the mornings and they don't include the last year but add subjects that can help you in the area of your choice so that still makes it a Bachillerato of three years but if you plan on working after finishing then that's the best choice.

Jarocha

Cheryl if you are reading us, I just sent you an email :).

Jarocha

Interesting info -- thanks! A coincidence it just became effective yesterday.

And I liked your story about Moctezuma's fresh fish from the previous blog.

Jeri, Thanks for another detailed, fabulous recap.

There seems to be one letter missing - right? the one that Mario wrote to David before Dora
delivered her letter. ¿Qué pasa?

Jarocha, thanks for the tons of interesting informations you provide us. I like them much.

Jarocha, I am just back from Mixteca for an incredible two days. Yes, I got the email, thanks so much. I will be in touch directly.

Thanks Jeri, for your stellar efforts and writing. I need to catch up on the discussions again. It's just that I am having such an enchanted time.
